10 Best Low Temperature Aluminum Brazing Rods (2023 Updated)

I repaired my transfer case with this product. It took some patience for me to get the hang of using these aluminum rods. I had a few old water pumps that I cut up and welded back together as practice.

The first weld didn’t hold its own weight but when I got this figured out the adjoining metal would break before the weld, nice stuff!!.

Read all you can about using this type of rod and you should have success. Like most products you need to use if for the right application.

Practice a little with this stuff- it is amazing. It is WAY better than other aluminum soldering products. Recipe for success: Clean your aluminum really good. Apply heat to repair area. Quickly rub the rod across the repair area from time to time to see if it’s hot enough.

Once it leaves a trail of melted rod, back off the heat a little, but not totally. Make for dang sure you have ZERO pressure inside any tubing you are repairing. Leave shrader valve cores out completely.

Aluminum oxidizes extremely fast at high temps, so try to get at least a thin film of this filler rod onto the repair area asap. Practice first on some scrap pieces. This stuff is by far the best aluminum repair product on the market that I have found.

The key is to practice on scrap first. You will get the hang of it. Aluminum is very touchy because it has a fairly small window of temperature where it can be soldered, but practice, practice, practice! You WILL get it! Don’t be afraid of aluminum! You can do it! I have repaired several refrigerator coils with this stuff.

The only problems I have had- refrigerator coils tend to have multiple leaks waiting to happen in the same general area of the original repair, so don’t automatically assume that the product failed. Just have the patience to leak-check the area and re-do if necessary.

Oftentimes new leaks spring up after repairing the original leak. But have patience to deal with this issue. You will get through it. It’s not because the product is defective. It’s just the nature of aluminum.

Lucas’ flux core rod works great, it easily flowed between pieces and created a very strong bond (used AL822 on aluminum). Just follow instructions, great results. Also the plastic container the rods come in make for handy storage.

Since i don’t use a lot of brazing rod there is no need for me to fabricate nor buy a rod storage container.

Soldered a aluminium condenser coil hole with ease. Make sure to sand with a 150 grit sandpaper before soldering to clean the aluminum to a shiny appearance. Move the torch around to heat aluminum while gently touching with rod.

Move torch back and forth from tubing to allow solder to fill large holes. Do not overheat or solder will fall into holes because it is too liquid from overheating. Does a great job.

This was my first attempt at solder brazing. More variables involved than I expected. But, the silver brazing rods were easy to use. They are perfect for the application I was going to use them for. I would recommend them for heating and air applications.

Just make sure you have the proper training and tools to do the job.

I use these rods when brazing iron with aluminum and copper when repairing refrigerators. And they are great for these jobs, and they never let me down. They have 15% silver in my composition, which in my opinion is the best for brazing.

A very good brazing rods, work great

Very easy to use if you follow the instructions and use a stainless steel brush to clean the area to be brazed moments before heating the area along with develop the correct striking technique required to start a good flow and fill.

I have been using these brazing rods for many years and they produce very strong joints and are great for repairing cracked housings or filling in stripped out threads for tapping without having to use heli-coils or oversized fasteners plus the new threads are much more wear resistant than the original material.

I’ve turned an scrap aluminum from an old screen room into stake sides for a Harbor Freight Trailer, made new aluminum handles/cranks for tools, repaired aluminum castings on tractors/lawn equipment/power tools, repaired aluminum mast/boom fittings on sail boats, kitchen appliances, etc, etc all with a propane tank and a old style plumbers torch on a hose.

Have not had a repair fail yet even on items that have seen hard use daily for many years. Again you have to follow instructions and be sure to clean the joints to be brazed down to the bare aluminum below the surface of any anodized finishes using a stainless steel brush since a plain steel brush will leave particles behind that will result in a poor bond and weak braze.

Paint, oil, grease, or dirt too close to the area to be brazed will create smoke that will contaminate the area and prevent a good braze so again cleanliness is critical. I always keep a supply of these rods handy in my shop.

So I’ve always been leery of anything that claims to be able join aluminum other than TIG. But let’s make the distinction clear, while the product description calls them “welding rods”. this is brazing and not welding, an apples to oranges comparison.

Brazing is using a melted filler material to externally bond the join, it does not melt the base material. Welding melts the base material to fuse it together along with the welding rod to create a solid joint.

Ok, so now that’s out of the way. I needed to make a clamping jig for sandwiching and gluing layers of leather discs together to make stacked leather knife and tool handles. I needed to make the jig out of aluminum because the glue and tannin in the leather will react to steel.

I was concerned whether or not the joints from these rods could handle the clamping force I’d be apply to compress the leather discs together. Well, they performed like champs, and I’m impressed by their strength.

Now I’m trying to think of other things that I can now make from aluminum. good stuff.

I have never tried to join aluminum and had only seen it done on YouTube so I got welding rods ( note: it does not weld ) but will join together by heating up both peace’s at the same time. Does take a little time to get use to.

But it does do exactly what it says it will do! Create a bond that is stronger than the parent metal. Do look on YouTube and find out the best ways to join peace’s together. There are a lot of different people showing how they did and failed but didn’t know what they were doing and didn’t follow the directions and this is the biggest problem with the effectiveness of this product.

IT DOES WORK just follow the instructions and use common sense when trying it out. This product saved me a $80 , went to a local machine shop and got a quote for a $100 to weld 2 pieces together. Bought a package of rods for $20 and it works great and only use half of the rod , it comes with 8 rods.

these are not “just aluminum”. they are alloyed especially for brazing. simply picking up a coke can absolutely won’t work. i wouldn’t say “the price is excellent” however it is competitive for these products from any mfg i’ve used a different brand previously (which looks the same) and it works well – easier than silver soldering pipe (that’s braze welding btw).

the result can be a thick pool of aluminum bonded as part of the aluminum that is stronger than one would think from the (softness) of the rod before brazed in (ie, if brazed to 1/4″ you’d have to cut it you cannot simply bend it or pull it out, it’s nearly as strong as the aluminum your bonding or stronger if your aluminum part is poor quality, not dense or alloyed, aluminum).

proper USE: the tendancy is if you overheat the aluminum (parts) your brazing together will also pool (melt) – which often is not wished (ie, unless it is in a mould so it can’t run away). the difference between pooling only the rod and “just a little” of what is being welded is famously a light touch: however the need for doing that can be avoided by setting up the weld so there is nowhere to run (set in a mould).

there are plenty of braze welding books out there for free these days, i imagine. i give it 4 stars not because it’s not a good product, but because other welding rods (brass rods) are cheaper for the weight and more available – while aluminum is more expensive and not in retail stores (hard to find).

A bit sub-optimum on cast aluminum. The casting started bleeding alloying metals before the rods would melt and flow. Probably works well on billet or extrusions.

These silver solder sticks work great. It’s important to get the aluminum hot enough. I found using rosebud tip on thicker material works well to heat evenly. When Aluminum is just glowing red touch the rod to the surfaces and it will flow around just like soldering a copper water pipe.

Length of these are just right to allow easy manipulation.

These Brazing rods worked Very Well !!! They flowed easly, laid down smooth and the flux worked well and was not difficult to remove when done. and the price was fair also. Very Pleased with them and would Reccomend them if a Bronze rod is what you need.

Can’t tell the difference between brands of brazing rods and I have a few brands on hand

Has an amazing tube and packaged very well. Rod welds perfect. I needed some 1/16th rod for some thinner metal and I’m so glad I ordered from this site.

I am currently in the middle of a project calling for MIG. Once I switch my machine back over to TIG (very excited to) I will no doubt get the same results as experienced while correcting shipping details; exactly what you would expect from a professional organization.
