20 Best Tools For Trimming Bushes (2023 Updated)

I ordered these shears to replace a mechanically-identical set sold by a Nationally-Known Manufacturer, so I knew what I’d be getting and that it would be exactly what I want. THAT set came with a 5-year warranty (Yeah, we’ll see about that, I thought), and last summer, the spring that opens the blades and handgrips broke.

(Probably just after the warranty expired, but I wouldn’t know because I can’t find it after all that time. ) We’ll just have to wait and see whether this one lasts any longer, but in the meantime, it won’t matter because I’ll be putting it to good use.

I use the blade-angle swiveling feature constantly, and so will you. The swivel seems stiffer than the one on my old pair, but it may just be in need of a break-in to loosen it up. At least I can be confident that this is one feature that won’t break.

These grass sheers with great, however didn’t take long to build up a blister. Will need to remember to wear gloves to protect my hands. So far I’ve been extremely satisfied with all the products purchased from Garrett Wade.

I really appreciate the strong cutting blade! I have discarded two other clippers because the blades bent and they stopped cutting. The design of the clipper allows it to cut thicker branches than other similar clippers.

I do a LOT of gardening and know the value of a good pair of anvil pruners. These are perfect for the job when my bypass pruners will not due. They stay sharp and cut through the hard sage branches with little effort.

And the price? I kinda feel like I am stealing them.

We’ve been using these shears for our gardening/pruning needs for several weeks now and have been very pleased with them. They are well-made, easy to operate (the safety is especially easy to engage/disengage with a flick of the thumb) and has been able to handle some pretty large branches.

I bought this hedge trimmer for its longer blade and powerful motor. It is brilliant for sculpting hedges and bushes and it gives a very precise cut. This is far better than the Bosch battery powered trimmer that it is replacing.

The extra length, wider pitch blade makes it so much easier to cut my large conifer hedge. I wish I had bought this sooner instead of persevering with the battery powered trimmer. Excellent value for money.

Seemed great at 1st even though heavier than expected, certainly too heavy for continued use all day. I’ve got well maintained Conifers, 2 Pyracantha hedges & my mums Hawthorne hedge. I’ve cut them all twice since purchase & gradually the motor ground to a halt.

The longer blade couldn’t cope with tight conifer walls even though there’s not any thickness to the growth stems,.

Hopefully will be excellent. Replaced an aged Bosch 700Watt 70mm electric hedge trimmer which has given many years of excellent service, but died, and no longer available. Went Makita because the Bosch is now only 500Watt and I did not want less power.

I expect the Makita to be excellent, it is certainly very pricy compared to the Bosch, and reviews are good – but only time will tell. I have a lot of Bosch tools, this is my first Makita, so fingers crossed.

These arrived the day before the delivery date which was pleasing and the packaging was ample. I used them a few days later and clipped my hedge with amazing speed. The clippers are amazing, they are so sharp I wished that I had these years ago.

The blades are shorter than other cutters which actually makes them more balanced. The handles are shaped to make the blades to perform better as they dip into the hedges and make the clipping easier.

I say clipping but this first time was a complete de-bushing of my hedges as I didnt want to stop. I am 72 years old and felt like a little kid with a new toy. It took me ages to choose these clippers on the internet and I know that I have made the right decision.

This supplier is far cheaper than some who are not on the internet.

They make for precise and efficient work of trimming and sculpting of shrubs and hedges. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting a high quality set of shears. ARS is no. 1.

Straight out of the box, these ARS HS-KR1000s will slice paper like the best quality scissors. Just stupid sharp. And they stay that way. I’ve got probably 8-10 hours of nothing but reining in and shaping an out of control row of 16 head high boxwoods.

Mind you, I wouldn’t use these on much over 1/4 to 3/8″ diameter brush but they breeze through the rougher stuff no problem and maintain that razo sharpness for the more delicate cuts. Though I dont have the talent myself, I imagine these would also be perfect for topiary sculpting.

They also seem more immune to picking up sap/dirt than my ARS pruner blades. I’ve only needed a quick wipe down with rubbing alcohol and a light spray of WD-40 before putting them away for the night.

Do you need to spend $80-$120 on a set of hedge shears? Probably not but, if you enjoy the craftsmanship and performance of a superbly made tool, you kind of owe it to yourself to experience these.

Very inexpensive solution to a big problem for us. I wanted a pole hedge trimmer and looked around for something decent at a good price – we don’t need a professional-level tool, merely something to trim some hedges that live behind our home and get out of hand about once a year.

The battery in this unit lasts about 45 minutes of hard work, so it took two charges, but it worked perfectly. It hacked through some thorny and rough brush with ease. My only complaint is that it is top-heavy.

So, after about 30 minutes of sustained use, whatever arm is out front will be feeling it. Still, for $100, it really can’t be beat.

This cordless trimmer sure beats having to drag a power cord around and therefore my number one reason for getting it. The adjustable angle trimming head is also a very good feature. It seems to be a tad on the heavy side or seems so after carrying it for 15-20 minutes but I’m in my late 60’s and overweight, so that’s a factor.

I haven’t used it for periods longer than 30 minutes so I don’t know how long a battery charge lasts but I know it charges up fairly quickly. Having Xylosma hedges nearly 10 feet tall makes the pole feature with an extra few feet of reach another big plus.

The negatives for me are two-fold: First, the power trigger is locked until you release a thumb activated switch that automatically locks the trigger in the off position again once the trigger is released.

Secondly there is no way to lock the trigger into the on position. Needing to always unlock the trigger for power and not being able to lock the trigger into a power on position can be annoying at times.

The upside is that it improves your safety and conserves the battery life between charges. Maybe this contrary trigger setup is a Government requirement, don’t know. Despite this annoyance I’ve always gotten good service from Black & Decker tools and I think this cordless trimmer is a winner.

I love this pole trimmer. Yes it is obviously a little top heavy because the motor is at the top of the trimmer. Other than that it does a GREAT job. I was very disappointed though in the battery which came with it.

I was hoping that it was interchangeable with my 20 volt B & D hedge trimmer which has 2 good sized Lithium batteries. Then I would have back up batteries instead of waiting for it to be charging. Really felt that was pretty crappy of Black and Decker when they are BOTH 20 volts.

It’s kinda like screwing the consumer. Other than that I do like it and I am very happy I bought it. I do have some very tall shrubs to trim which makes it a ladderless job.

I have purchased Fiskars hedge shears in past and they always wore out (stopped working properly) so I have not purchased any for years. There is supposedly a lifetime warranty, however have never tried to see if it would be honored.

I have tried other hedge shear makers with mixed results and decided to try Fiskars again. I primarily cut small twig growth and grass. The Fiskars Hedge Shears I just bought on 07/17/21 worked very well on tall grass and cutting back weeds and grass around flowers.

I do not like weed whackers which do a lot of damage to plants. I did notice on the tag attached that they were made in Vietnam which is not disclosed at Walmart online product information. I would like to see more products made in The USA and at least disclosed online where made so customers can decide if they want to purchase foreign made products.

Was looking to update my living room with a modern flair and this lamp is perfect! It was very easy to assemble. I love the shade’s shape, color and texture. The lamp base is very solid. Wish I would’ve updated my lamp sooner.

These have been wonderful. I was previously using little pruning clippers to cut the massive bushes in front of my house. It took me forever and the bushes were getting out of control. So happy with my investment in these – All of my Fiskars products have been reliable, sturdy, and efficient, and these are no exception.

It was also much easier to shape the bushes into balls with these (until the other half trimmed them ONCE and made them look like boxy hack jobs. We all have our own talents, I suppose). Looking forward to shaping them up again soon with these shears!.

I wanted a pair of light shears so my wife could trim box hedges and small plants. These shears are totally inefficient and need two or three cuts to remove very small branches. the green element simply folds rather than being cut.

They will cut thicker soft material but they have no bite. Adjusting them made no real difference. Its a shame as they are well made and seem attractive to use. Sadly this is not the case. I will be returning them as by comparison with my other shears, they are next to useless.

I use Fiskars shears for cutting hedgerows and brambles in my volunteer role of maintaining local footpaths. So I give shears hard treatment and over the years I have found that Fiskars shears perform and last better than other makes.

I have not yet used these Fiskars Solid shears enough to test how robust they are, but I am a little concerned over the type of shock absorber which is used on this model. I have found with previous shears that this type of shock absorber does not stand up to hard use.

So I think I shall probably need to keep these shears for light work and garden use. If I had known that they had this type of shock absorber I would have bought the more expensive Fiskars shears instead.

These shears feature a fingertip adjustable tensioner at the pivot point of the blades. For trimming thin or soft plant material, a lighter setting will let you work faster with less fatigue. Please note that the product description is inaccurate: the handles are not round, but oval, and they do not telescope.

The blade edge is not wavy. It has parallel grooves on the upper blade which are perpendicular to the cutting edge to facilitate cleaner cuts. There is a notch in the lower blade for use in cutting small branches up to about a quarter inch or so.

They are well sized for trimming individual bushes, especially in tight areas. For tall and long hedges, a larger size would work better. The handles are padded with a dense rubber material that prevents them from slipping in use.

I bought these hoping they would help my elderly parents more safely pick their oranges. Tried them today for the first time and they worked great! If the orange is too ripe it just falls off the tree when you touch it, but for most of them it worked very well.

Now they don’t have to reach through dirty trees full of spiders and thorns to get most of their oranges. These were very sharp and cut very easily. I would love a pair for pruning some bushes, trees, and roses in my own yard.

They seem like a simple, solid design that should last a while. Time will tell.

Perfect tool for pruning Hosta flower stalks and other small branches. The 4-foot arm stops having to reach in and the grabber cushions on the very sharp blades allow the clipping to be lifted out and disposed of.

I’ve had a similar pruner for over 30 years and use it regularly. I’ve been concerned about how much longer it’s going to last and bought this one as a back-up. I can never find these in the store and was pleased to find it on the web.

My original stick pruner has to be used with gloves, the handle design pinches skin and this one does not. This one also has some head rotation making it more convenient. I use the stick pruner to trim lower branches of bushes off of the ground so debris doesn’t collect.

The long stick allows trimming without having to stoop, bend, or get down on my knees to prune. Yes, it’s slower to use than a regular hand clipper pruner, but I’m old and comfort has priority over speed these days.

A very handy tool for trimming edges around paths, manhole covers, plumbing pipes etc. The ability to swivel the cutting head according to the job is excellent. The grip compression action to operate the blades gets a bit tiring after a while but doing small sections at a time is fine.

The long handle makes the operating height very comfortable.

I am disabled and unable to manage handling a traditional trimmer. This Longneck Shear can be managed with one hand and in most cases works BETTER than a traditional trimmer. An added bonus. NO NOISE bothering the neighbors! Fantastic product.

I took a chance in purchasing this product. I was initially looking for what are known as “long handled shears. ” They are commonly found in the UK, but are almost unheard of in the USA. The advantages that they have over the product reviewed here, is the length of the cutting surface and the heavy duty construction.

That, and the additional advantage of a two handed grip, which allows for less fatigue when one must deal with an extended trimming session. The Fiskars Long Handled Grass Shears are a very serviceable substitute for those who don’t require a gas powered trimmer, but who appreciate the quiet operation that manual shears provide.

One very useful aspect of these shears is the adjustable nature of the angle of operation that can be easily accessed at the turn of the wrist. One can trim either horizontally, or vertically from a standing position.

I can’t comment about the expected longevity of these shears, since this is my first season with them, but I can recommend them due to their performance and relatively low price.

Have you ever ended up in the heat of trimming your hedges and had stop and switch tools and deal with grass or a stray branch that’s slightly bigger than your shears like? Well just let me say, inconvenient! These shears are a true blessing.

No grass too small and those slightly larger branches, no match. Not to mention the extra reach with the extension capabilities, no more strain from being the hunchback of Notre dame. Try them, you’ll love em!!.

Okay so far but the critical part of value for these things is how durable they are. Hopefully, Cdn Tire will ask again in a year. The telescoping function is iffy. It’s a bit sticky and one (or at least I) have to take the gloves off in order to do the telescoping.

Not fatal but my previous ones this was not required.

These were a little pricey but I needed something that would cut without having to use lots of strength behind it. They cut very nicely and the extra lenth was a much needed benefit. I think they are worth their cost.

Fiskars is a dependable brand. I did not get paid in any way for this review. Just like to be of help to someone trying to make a decision.

I’ve used Felco number 2 secateurs for 20 years. I am left handed and was curious as to how the left hand specific Felco 10 performed. The Felco 10 model took me several weeks to get used to using after using right handed models for 20 years.

This is neither a pro or a con, just an observation. The open/close lock on the right side of the unit is the hardest thing to get used to but as for a left hander it’s perfectly placed and never is accidentally closed/locked as per the right handed Felco 2 models.

The pivoting lower grip works very well to easy repeat strain injury and also assists to limit hand soreness when using the secateurs for hours at a time. However, the pivoting handle did pop out from it’s mount once but popped right back in again.

I suspect this is the main weakness of this model. As per Felco number 10 units the blades are truly excellent, the bypass mechanism is first class, the handles close very narrow and close so they suit small hands and the return spring is perfectly tensioned to make prolonged use a pleasure.

In summary I do not regret purchasing the left hand specific model and will use them extensively until no doubt I’ll misplace them (again) If you are left handed and already like using Felco right handed secateurs like the Model number2 that I also use then I’d stick to the right handed model simply because mechanically they are perfect – as good as a pair of secateurs gets – if you are left handed and want to upgrade to a high end pair of left hand specific secateurs then I can recommend these Model 10 Felcos.

Only a *lot* of time will tell if they are as good as their reputation! Initially, I found the latch very stiff and difficult to operate with its low profile. However, the screw can easily be loosened slightly – it remains to be seen if it retains the adjusted setting or continues to slacken.

A very small, flat ‘spanner’ is provided for the main spindle nut lock plate and latch screws, but there is insufficient room to use it on the latch screw and it probably doesn’t have enough leverage to operate the lock plate screw satisfactorily (I haven’t tried that) – it will easily become lost.

Fortunately, both screws have hexagon heads and screwdriver slots. The surface machining on the handle casting (non-cutting) left some quite sharp edges – which were easily smoothed off. NB these are small points aimed as feedback to the manufacturer, and not intended to deter anyone from purchase.

The first thing I cut was a pencil thin Lantana branch. The blade dented the blade and would not close. I used a pruning file and reshaped the blade and it worked for a while. Next the latch began to move freely while using the shears.

This caused it to frequently lock while using. The problem now is that the spring is not strong enough to keep the blade open. I have to wrap my fingers around the handles, and manually open them after each cut.

The pruner is only about two weeks old, and has proven worthless to me in the garden.

Just got delivered last night, charged the battery overnight, and gave it a quick test on one bush. It seems to have plenty of power and cut real nice and smooth. I love the fact that the battery is identical to the Craftsmen Cordless drill that i just bought a few months ago, so now I own 3 batteries that can be used for either tool, which is helpful when you have 140 hedges to trim! I had just finished all 140 a week or so ago, so I won’t be able to give this one a real test until the Fall likely, but actually looking forward to it now since my old cordless Black & Decker one just did not have the power anymore and it made the task very daunting.

I bought this product from Lowes about 1. 5 years ago. because my B&D blade got dull. however this craftsman trimmer was fine for the first season I used it. This date of my second season it begain to bogg down and now it stops and hangs up internally with the smallest twiggs on my hedges.

It gets very hot and the grease has separated from its gears and the plactic supports are now melted allowing the drive mechanism to disengage. But the blades are sharp but now are no use to me. The B&D lasted a lifetime I just need new blades.

My garage is full of craftman tools for over 60 years this is the first I am truely disgusted with.

Oh boy there is so much to say about this product. I would highly recommend this product to anyone with a yard. It worked right out of the box. It worked on my hedges and produced a nice clean line. It did not snag on the branches like some cheaper brands do.

It charged quickly after my first use. Less than two hours to charge. It also worked on my small branches on trees that needed to be cut down. I also had some prehistoric pricker plants (practically trees, they stood a good 6 feet) and it powered right through those too.

Such a wonderful product, a huge timesaver.

I have severe arthritis in my hands and wrists, tennis elbow, and shoulder issues and even I can use this product pain free and almost effort free. The chain driven system works wonders in making this so easy to use.

It cuts through small branches like butter. I use it for the dozens and dozens of dang black walnut suckers that the squirrels plant all over my property. I love that I don’t even have to bend over to cut those suckers out.

It’s super light weight, too, so I can trim the small branches of my trees. Highly highly recommend this product.

This is the best pole pruner I have ever used. It is lightweight but sturdy. The cutter mechanism takes up very little space as it is used so it can cut in tight areas. There are no ropes to tangle in branches.

The orange sliding handle in the middle allows a reach of 3 feet. By holding the end of the pole and pulling the ball on the end, the reach is 6 feet. Pruning fruit trees, it can do a 3/4 inch cut nicely.

1 inch capacity is probably a bit much for hardwoods. Also like the rotating cutter which makes it easy to cut off vertical sprouts that are overhead.

I really think these hedge Shears and pruners will last a long time. They seem to be made well. First the shears. I think the handles are very comfortable. The tension control is a nice feature as it allows the user to set the action of the shears to what’s comfortable depending on what your clipping and how fast you want to clip.

The blades clip cleanly and I expect these to stay sharp for a long time. Now for the pruners. These fit my hand very well and seem to be well made. The action of these pruners is very smooth and the blades cut clean and even when cutting larger stalks or small branches.

I would recommend these Shears and pruners to any home owner and Gardner that keeps hedges and small bushes and young trees in shape all year.

I have 6 small trees and wanted something quick sharp and efficient. I have weak hands and wrists plus they are very large. I would say more for person with a lot of strength. They are big and bulky .

Value for money product. Very sharp and does a beautiful job on grass edges. Will definitely buy again. This product really makes a difference to grass boarders where your lawn mower can’t get to. Happy.

Up until now I have always paid top price for well known makes of tried and tested shears, however, I decided to try these and was not disappointed. They are so lightweight and easy to use. trimming was like cutting through butter.

The product does exactly as advertised. The shears are lightweight to use but substantial enough to easily cut back what is required. The extra length in the handles allows access to areas that you cannot reach with ordinary shears.

These shears seem to be excellent quality, strong and well made with a crisp cutting action. I bought them for their light weight so I half expected them to be flimsy but they are not at all. I’m really pleased I bought them.

I was a little sceptical about the size of this until I received and used it for the first time. I have tall hedges front back and the side of my gardens. I was impressed by the weight and balance of the trimmer and as I use battery Makita tools all day at work and have plenty of batterys and had 4 5.

0ah batterys ready to complete the task of cutting all my hedges. On full power I used only 2 batterys and not all of the second battery was used to cut over 100m of 2. 5m high hedge. It dealt with black thorn branches up to 15 mm thick with ease.

I couldn’t fault it to be honest for use on a big hedge. I was so impressed I bought a lawnmower and garden strimmer which both have excellent run time on the batterys. Well done Makita.

I have several Makita cordless tools and have been very satisfied with them. The first one of the two hedge-trimmers that I bought performed very well, until the electronics failed after just over one year of light usage.

Makita Tools mentions a three-year guarantee, but if you fail to register the tool within thirty days of purchase, then it becomes one year. I was faced with a repair-bill close to the price of a new machine, with limited guarantee, so I chose to buy a new one and have registered it for the three-year warranty.

There was no documentation in the box (eg regarding registration for the extended warranty). That is why I gave just one star for value.

I have over 100m of beech hedging and 120m of conifer hedging to maintain and usually use a petrol hedge trimmer to cut it. I saw the Makita hedge trimmer on another website and discovered it had a much longer cutter and weighed significantly less than my petrol hedge trimmer.

I have several brushless Makita tools, including a chainsaw and they work very well, so I bought this one, hoping to use it to keep thinner hedge growth in check. It far exceeded my expectations, sweeping through everything with ease and cutting a section of hedge in half the time my petrol trimmer took, including some thicker branches I had expected it to fail on.

Amazing performance for an 18v tool.

Excellent pair of shears, easy to use, comfy wooden handles feel just right, slightly heavy when compared to other shears with plastic or rubber handles but has that feeling of quality that is made to last.

Overall real good hedge trimmer. Good build quality. The handle swivels which is a fantastic feature and really helps during use. The tool is light weight also. Blades are very good quality and incredibly sharp.

Cuts though small size branches, I was cutting through strong branches with ease that were around the thickness of a pencil and a half in diameter, I probably could have pushed the tool further but what I could not get through I just cut with loppers then went over it again.

On the whole this is a decent quality well made tool for the money. Im a carpenter and I have a large range of cordless makita tools for work which are all excellent. This hedge trimmer is no exception.

I would certainly recommend the product to anybody considering the purchase of it.

Used my 5Ah Makita batteries I already had. One battery on high speed easily trimmed my garden. The unit is balanced but did require some strength and fitness. The rotating handle is very useful. Use with eye protection and only mess on with the blades if the battery is disconnected.

After use I put spray oil on the cutters. No cable to worry about. My previous trimmer has a cut cable. Does a very neat job on a typical hedge, harsher on shrub bushes. If you have small jobs and lack the strength might be better with a 50cm blade?.

Overall, very happy with the Makita DUH601. It is light, quiet in operation, easy to handle and can cut stems and branches up to a decent size. It will also provide a surprising amount of cutting time before you have to change the battery, even if your using a 3.

0 or 4. 0Ah battery pack. The twistable body is a neat feature and the reverse direction function is also useful in the event that the blade jams for some reason. I can’t give it full marks however becuase although it is better than the Makita DUH523, the difference in price is difficult to justify.

I have used both models and the DUH601 is, I would say, 20 to 25% better but it costs nearly three times the price.
