20 Best Tool For Cutting Branches (2023 Updated)

I bought one of the store brand pruners and they their latch messed up and took them back within 30 days. The manager let me upgrade to Corona, a “better” brand. I got these to keep in the truck to cut off thistle “flowers” before they could fly away.

At the end of the season, I noticed the sharp but very thin edge had broken away (sharpened wrong by factory or bad steel) only after light use. I tried to take them back to the store, but the clerk said the warranty was with Corona.

So, no different than mail order customer service. Good luck. I don’t know how on earth you could cut up to one inch with these; the metal chips on weed stems I mean, flower heads.

I don’t know if I got a faulty pair or what. I was SO excited about these after years of using fiskars and replacing them every couple years. They just feel sturdy in your hands. I decided to be very diligent in taking care of these since they were so expensive.

I’ve had them 1 month and used them 5 times, washing and throughly drying after each use. Just found them rusted shut. I had to sand them and coat them in lubricant to get them working again. I know it’s all downhill from here so I’m pretty angry about this ‘investment’.

Corona knows what they are doing in a solid workhorse pruner. These are solidly made, no-nonsense, and if you don’t lose them, will perform for years. I purchased a replacement pair as my previous set are missing after five years and nothing else cuts like a set of corona’s.

Weed clearing, tree pruning, these do the job. And the latchy thing isn’t forever falling into place preventing you from making a cut by obstructing the set from closing or from accidentally latching them shut.

The handle grippies don’t come off all the time either. These are a very worthwhile investment. I tend to have to hack junk volunteer elm trees so the one inch are important. I do have a few hand issues but have plenty strength to go around with these, because they do deliver ‘cut’.

No side play either when you bite into the branch. Cheaper types often twist that way and otherwise go to junk immediately. These stay on the mark. Use a set of Corona’s once and you’ll wonder why you ever bought the cheapy junky ones.

Having several tall trees on my property I have used various pole saws and pruners all having limited effectiveness and usually lots of problems. I’ve used the heavy steel branch loppers with ratchet that can be mounted on long poles, but these are extremely heavy and the rope pull always tend to bend the extension, so often more a hazard than help.

I gave this unit a try, and I was so surprised how effortlessly cutting was for most of the out of reach branches. Since the pulling ribbon is inside, the pole does not bend when cutting. Also the cutting head is very light, approx 2 pounds so there is little difficulty in balancing the extended pole overhead.

Also the cutting blade has a very full range of angle to get the best cut position. For those instances of some thicker branches it comes with an attachable saw blade.

Bought it sight unseen. Needed long reach, ability to cut through thick limbs, and no awkward cord to pull with one hand while trying to hold the shaft with the other (been there, done that. never again).

Had low expectations as seemed to be too good to be true. Man, was I pleasantly surprised. Works like a dream: easily cuts through thick limbs with loppers, light and easy to handle fully extended, smooth as silk and important to me, it lays flat (diagonally) in the standard 8 ft bed of my pickup.

Haven’t used saw blade yet. Only question now is how long will it last. Seems really well made and I have my fingers crossed. Great value. very pleased so far. Oh yeah, forgot something. I was skeptical about the clunky looking lopper angle adjustment feature.

I love it! Just visualize how you would cut a limb at any strong angle other than horizontlal. It is an outstanding feature.

like the fact that the spring associated with automatically opening feature is hidden/non-exposed, and of all the units ever used, spring has never failed. Plus, the slide button, locking feature is effective, and it too, have never failed me.

Lastly, if I attempt to cut off more than this clipper is designed to do, sometimes I will bend the metal brace, that parallels the cutting blade. easy remedy, just hit metal brace against something sturdy (like concrete steps) to bend this bar back, so as to be as close as possible to the cutting blade.

wollah, it’s fixed, and fully operational, again.

Update after over a year of owning these i still recommend then 100% I bought these at my local Home Depot a few months back for light duty pruning around my yard and a few neighbors’ yards that I work on.

And these are far from light duty! These things power through live branches with very little effort on my part. I will say they do not work as well on dead branches! I’ve tried them on: Holly /lilac /maples*red -silver -Japanese */pine /oak/ cypress / and more They are okay on roses but not great.

Not a con just a suggestion!.

I don’t recommend this product. My pruner doesn’t spring back easily, so I have to use my pinky finger to push the shear open. Also, when making angle cuts, the thin blade wanders, allowing wood to jam between the two blades.

Not only do you get an ugly cut, but you have to stop and un-jam the thing. there are better pruners on the market for the same money.

I have just started using my 6’ heavy-duty pruner this spring (it was a Christmas gift) and I LOVE it. It’s sharp and easy to handle and it it reaches the top branches of all the medium height shrubs without a ladder.

The only possible improvement would be if the blades were able to grip the cut branch to keep it from falling straight down. (I have a shorter pruner with one wide blade that grips a branch after cutting.

It’s good pruner, 7’ reach is nice. 3/4” branch is pushing it though. Wish it was more heavy duty, but that might make it heavier. It’s so lite to lift and use it will not tire you out.

Just got it today and couldn’t wait to give it a try. Love it. I’ll probably end up getting the longer version, too. If you reach for far branches and use the pull cord it is top heavy. It will tip and hit the ground after you cut the branch.

That can’t be good in the long run. I had my doubts whether I would be able to exert enough force to cut using the pull cord, but it worked surprisingly well. For tougher wood and bigger branches the sliding cut handle works better.

So far only one shrub presented a challenge with the branch separating into a squashed bundle of fibers. But even that one I could get with a bit of wiggling and pulling. I got this one mostly for the shrubs close to the ground and trimming back old English ivy that encrouches from the neighbor’s yard.

This is a pruner, not a tree saw. But I can use it to trim back the branches so that the saw work is just trimming the fat branches and the top of the trunk. If I keep the branches trimmed I can do without hiring someone to keep the jungle in check.

I have severe arthritis in my hands and wrists, tennis elbow, and shoulder issues and even I can use this product pain free and almost effort free. The chain driven system works wonders in making this so easy to use.

It cuts through small branches like butter. I use it for the dozens and dozens of dang black walnut suckers that the squirrels plant all over my property. I love that I don’t even have to bend over to cut those suckers out.

It’s super light weight, too, so I can trim the small branches of my trees. Highly highly recommend this product.

This is the best pole pruner I have ever used. It is lightweight but sturdy. The cutter mechanism takes up very little space as it is used so it can cut in tight areas. There are no ropes to tangle in branches.

The orange sliding handle in the middle allows a reach of 3 feet. By holding the end of the pole and pulling the ball on the end, the reach is 6 feet. Pruning fruit trees, it can do a 3/4 inch cut nicely.

1 inch capacity is probably a bit much for hardwoods. Also like the rotating cutter which makes it easy to cut off vertical sprouts that are overhead.

Purchased a Friskas pruner recently after the one I had broke. It was absolutely hopeless and could not do the job. Even my husband found it difficult to use. Needs too much strength for blade to cut through branch.

I took it back and exchanged it for a Trojan brand. Absolutely fantastic! Easy to use and a good sharp blade. Exactly what you need. Staff not that happy to exchange, but it didn’t do the job I bought it for.

I have always been happy with my Fiskars gardening pruners and loppers. After almost 16 years I retired my original lopper upon receiving the new lopper. Not much had changed over the years. The design is almost identical.

These cut my Chinese fan palms and other plants like butter. I have cut crepe myrtle limbs over 1 1/2 inches, its not always easy but the long handles gives you leverage. The lopper itself is not too heavy for a woman to handle, the 22″ long arms provide good leverage.

The handles have non slip textured grips. The title is misleading as the total overall length, including the blades is 28″. The only negative is that the blades are part of the tools arms so they are not replaceable.

I believe some models allow the blades to be replaced. I use my loppers just a few times a month. The old loppers were dull and had been for some time, but still worked. Hoping to get another 16 years out of this set.

This is a great set of Pruning Shears. The Loppers: These are steal blades and make quick work of bushes and shrubs. They cut perfect in dry wood, twigs or damp roots. They are sharp and cut through branches with ease.

No slip handle grips make your job much safer. I love the reach on them to get up into those hard to reach places. The pruner: Is a short handle solid blade, nice and sharp perfect for the trim of bushes and low lying branches.

Much smaller than the lopper but perfect for the pruning of bushes. Also no slip handle with the nice gripper. Love that you can lock them when not in use. As with all tools keep away from children as these are sharp.

I’ve just used these to trim my tomato plants of unwanted leaves and stems. They were ideal to get between the stems to reach the parts I wanted to cut. For what they’re designed for, they are very good.

The “secateur” in the product title could mislead some people. I think “snips” is more appropriate. They are for light duty and certainly not for pruning thick or woody stems. Overall, I was very impressed and if the spring stays in place and the locking catch doesn’t fall off, I shall be buying some more as Christmas presents.

Great for intricate dead heading and small pruning where secateurs are not pointed enuf. Also the spring is concealed so that it can’t keep dropping out. Only problem is as I love them so much I have to discipline myself to not abuse them by cutting too thick pruning.

I prefer the straight ones but could only find curved ones with concealed spring. However they are almost as good.

Draper have changed the design and supplier for these secateurs and this is not a good thing. I have had these in the past and they are comfortable to hold, blades were sharp and well designed. Now the blades are not so sharp and thicker and they are uncomfortable to hold.

Also they have changed the colour. Will not be buying these again until they return to the standard they had before.

These Fiskarks pruners are great. Smooth action and cuts through effortlessly. I like the telescopic handles but unless you need the reach I recommend keeping them short for maximum power and tool protection.

Take care of your tools and they’ll take care of all your projects. Clean them after each use, take off the sap or whatever is on the blade. Give them a light rub with sand paper if needed and don’t forget that magic little drop of oil at the end to keep them pristine for years to come.

Fiskars. Anything Fiskars. Just supreme quality and a great value for the money. They are a legitimate company. This Lopper is very well designed and very well made. A little suggestion, define toy get the power level model instead of the single pivot model.

In this case of the extendable handle model, the handles are much heavier (especially needed because you are extending), the jaws much more powerful. , just heavier duty all the way around and it is only a little bit more then the single pivot model.

Fiskars makes really good tools. No Hype.

I have used these loppers several times since being purchased. They work great for pruning the trees and brush around my property. I like that I can use it in normal mode as the brush is very thick in the back of my property so it stays compact for us in tight spots.

I also like that the handles extend for leverage which makes it easier to cut larger branches. This tool works perfect for my needs.

Everyone is going to the aluminum models now but you cant have a better Spare for the price than these. They are very well made and will last a lifetime with a little care.

This thing simply works. But do note it’s a home owner, DIY – low duty cycle thing. Made of mostly plastic. You do get what you pay for and for what I paid for it I’m more than satisfied. For those that complain about no oil – of course it needs oil, it’s a chain saw.

They all need oil. Be thankful it’s not included as that would simply raise the costs and complicate shipping – raising costs even more. Stuff is plentiful enough to find and cheap. Remember, it’s an inexpensive home gamer pole saw that should see occasional use – not a Subaru for daily driving.

Prior to this purchase in May of 2020, I had gas powered chair saw by Stihl. When it worked, it was fine but after a few years it died and I trashed it. Then I took gamble on this saw. Amazing. No, it won’t fell a 12″ tree but for cutting limbs even 6″ wide it works well.

The product is very well designed with material that is study and takes abuse. The battery run time is amazing long. I can be out there cutting for 2 hours off and on and its still got enough juice. The telescoping pole works well too.

I also easily can remove the chain for sharpening and easily replace it. Some hints. Always start with a full battery charge and the proper level of oil and be sure the chain has the proper tension. You should be able to grab the chain pull it away from the bar slightly and have it snap back.

The manual tells you about this. One improvement it could use. To adjust the tension on the chain there is a wheel. I would like to see that a bit larger so you could use it more easily. This is a purchase I would gladly make again!!.

Very easy to use, but you have to get used to the weight of the saw at the end of the pole. Attachment bar is very easy to install. I charged up the battery and cut 20 maple branches up to 5 inches thick and had plenty of battery life left.

All my cuts were without any issue. I did not have any problems with the chain or bar. I am very happy with my purchase. You must have the bar oil before you start the saw that can be purchased almoat anywhere.

I can also say it wasnt very noisy either.

I bought these hoping they would help my elderly parents more safely pick their oranges. Tried them today for the first time and they worked great! If the orange is too ripe it just falls off the tree when you touch it, but for most of them it worked very well.

Now they don’t have to reach through dirty trees full of spiders and thorns to get most of their oranges. These were very sharp and cut very easily. I would love a pair for pruning some bushes, trees, and roses in my own yard.

They seem like a simple, solid design that should last a while. Time will tell.

These are WONDERFUL, especially for snipping prickly things like multiflora roses. It is a brilliant and simple design that really does let you snip something and grab it all in one squeeze. I tried my sister’s and immediately went out and bought this one, which has already had much use.

I switch to loppers only when the branch or limb gets too think.

Perfect tool for pruning Hosta flower stalks and other small branches. The 4-foot arm stops having to reach in and the grabber cushions on the very sharp blades allow the clipping to be lifted out and disposed of.

They are sharp, responsive and balanced so you don’t have to struggle with them. The colored accents make them easier to spot in the grass or shrubs. The non-slip handles make pruning and cutting easier.

The pruner and lopper have narrow tips to make it easier to reach tight spots. The saw has a curved handles so there’s less stress on your arm when sawing. I expect we’ll make good use of these for many years to come : ).

Good set of pruning tools. This set contains a lopper with 22″ padded handles that will handle small limbs up to 1-1/2″. The long handles give you plenty of leverage and the blades are sharp enough to make quick work of them.

The pruner is bypass style which works much better for me. The grips are padded well and the locking tab is easy to lock or unlock one handed. I guess that my favorite of the three tools is the folding pruning saw.

I have a couple of pruning saws that do not fold. They are good but it is sometimes awkward to find a place to keep them while working. This little saw eliminates looking for a place. Just fold it up and put it in your pocket.

It locks open and closed securely. The teeth are very sharp and cut quickly. Handy tool. I think that the rest of my saws will get a rest.

The handles on this lopper simply will not stay locked. It is frustrating, and potentially dangerous, as I found out when trimming a limb, and one handle unexpectedly collapsed. Had I not been braced I would have fallen into the tree.

This item should be recalled or replaced with one in which the handles securely lock. Otherwise this lopper worked great when cutting woody plants.

I’ve used the 1″ plus shears that are out, and not been pleased, since there’s always one branch that’s bigger than their bite. With these shears, I can make to partial bites on one side, and a final on the opposite and cut about 3″.

They’ve done the trick, stayed sharp, and exceeded my expectations. My wife, a slight young thing, with tender sensibilities, also finds she can work well with them.

I was motivated to comment by other comments wondering about durability. I’ve had an earlier version (it doesn’t have the yellow blade guide and the puller at the bottom is slightly different) of this pruner for a long time, probably around 20 years.

My usage level is light – once or twice a month. I used it today and it’s as good as the day I bought it. Because it’s so light, it’s good for reaching out horizontally. Our house is on the side of a steep hill.

I can prune the tops of trees in the front garden by reaching out from the 2nd level deck. I’m 73 and my upper body strength isn’t very impressive.

brilliant build quality and the adjustment from 2 mtrs to 4 mtrs is what makes this piece of equipment so useful. The blades will slice thru “Thumb size” branches quite easily but at 4 mtrs full length it can be tough on the arms for the casual gardener but the cutter works well.

The mechanism of the cutter is also far superior to the tree loppers that have a side lever or saw and also the additional length means that standing on step ladders is also reduced. A very good design is the cutting blade which is on a ratchet so you can adjust the angle which allows you to see the blade and position exactly where you want to cut using the orange blade guide, an excellent design feature.

It does require frequent changing of the extended length when working on a larger tree in order for the mechanism to be operated, but again the design is such that this is a simple operation with a single small lever/clamp.

Personally it was very cost effective to invest in this cutter for my two garden trees as I had been quoted 480 for pruning one tree and that was cutting it very low rather than pruning & shaping the top 2 metre thinner branches to a nice level & shape.

take care if you use step ladders and remember that when fully extended the weight can unbalance you. Overall an excellent design,build quality and operation.

Last year pruning my fruit trees, I was climbing ever higher up my trees and I thought, why. Why am I up so high doing a balancing act on thin limbs waiting for them to snap, there had to be a better way.

So what do you do, go on the Bunnings website and have a look. I decided on the Fiskars PowergearX Telescopic Tree Pruner as they have a good name and I also chose the one with the longest telescopic length.

I could not wait till the next winter so I could use my new pruner, so I found other jobs for it to do. You do not have to use it just to trim trees, you can use it in the garden to cut at ground level; it saves your back by not bending over all the time, which is fine by me as I have a bad back.

Then came time to try it on the fruit trees. I was so happy I did not have to climb any-more trees. I had only two trees to really prune back hard this year, but they were never pruned before it seemed and it took me a full month to prune both fruit trees; and I did not have to leave the ground once.

If I needed to get the higher branch, I just extended the arm, and cut the branch off easily. The Fiskars PowergearX Telescopic Tree Pruner was easy to use and I would buy it again no worries. After I use it, I just put a bit of grease on the blade and chain and put it away for the next time, easy.

It was a good buy that pruner. If you have a fruit tree to prune and it is a bit high off the ground, get one of these, it will do the job no worries.
