18 Best Store Bought Hush Puppy Mix (2023 Updated)

This food has been great for my senior pit bull! I can’t say if it has helped her allergies, because I am doing several others things to help manage her skin problems (regular medicated baths, supplements, etc.

). But it has definitely made a difference in her energy level. I noticed she had started to slow down and was reluctant to go up and down stairs, and switching to this food has changed that. She also plays more with the other dogs without getting sore after.

And she’s had no digestive issues on this food whatsoever. I do, however, wish they had a grain-inclusive senior formula or at least something without potatoes and peas. It’s good for dogs to have variety, so I like to regularly rotate between foods to give my dogs a break from some ingredients and introduce new ones.

(And potatoes and/or peas seem to be in almost every grain-free food. ).

I used to buy Dr. Elsey’s dry chicken, but because it has been out of stock everywhere for several months, I needed to buy an alternative for my cats. My female cat was from a hoarding situation and while she eats some wet food, she always prefers dry.

On top of it, she has dental disease. I tried Tiki Cat initially, but she had a difficult time chewing on the kibble and went on a hunger strike (fyi, I had her checked out by a vet, she’s fine). I decided to give Petcurean Go! a try since it’s a pellet like Dr.

Elsey’s and high in protein and much lower in carbs than most mass marketed brands. It turns out, she loves it. It’s half the size of Dr. Elsey’s and even easier for her to eat. My male cat is iffy on this food, but he prefers wet food and he could lose a few pounds.

This dry dog food comes in a fairly common size, on the large side and smells clean and fresh. My big Akita eats almost anything so I was not surprised when she took to it right away. However, she usually leaves a few pieces in her bowl rather than gobble it all up as she does with some other brands.

My small Pomeranian was not thrilled to be transitioning to this bigger size product. She often leaves most of it in her bowl, picking out the other things I mix in with it. As dog food goes, this product, GO! Was expensive for the amount of food and my dogs were okay with it, but, not super impressed.

It was rated very high on all sites I researched. I probably will not order this food again.

I’ve used the chicken flavor of these Instinct mixers in the past. The dogs already enjoy their kibble, but they scoop these bits out first then finish the bowl. I only add a few on top, but they are dry/tender enough to crumble them into the food if is necessary.

I expect the salmon oil is supposed to be the ingredient for skin and coat health, but I will probably buy a salmon oil supplement for winter dry skin. For me, this is a healthy dog treat that can help with bone and skin health all year.

I give these bits to my Shih Tzus as treats and to assist with digestion. My girls are older dogs (10 and 12) and they don’t have many teeth left so they eat only soft food and treats. I think they lose some fiber with the soft food diet and have been somewhat prone to constipation.

I give them each a handful of these bits each day after their evening walk and it has helped them tremendously. They also really like them. They gobble them up and get excited when they see the container.

I keep them in a vacuum sealed container to maintain the freshness. I also give them the mobility support toppers the same way. They like those too.

My husky loves this topper. He’s a picky eater, but also has some food allergies so getting him to eat his kibble can be a little challenging. However, with these on top he will eat most of his kibble.

I’ve ordered these a few times and usually have no problem opening the bag. However, this time it seems the made the perforated cut too low and I cut my thumb trying to open the bag. Had to grab scissors and make the opening higher up.

When I purchased my puppy they told me to keep her on regular health extension wet and kibbles for 90 days. She did not like the wet food, so I found out they had this puppy food. I called health extension to see how different the puppy food was and they said the only difference was this had more vitamins for puppies.

She liked it much better but very expense.

Marley eats health extension hard food and I mix in the wet food with a little coco therapy coconut oil and he loves it. I only feed him wet food in the morning so one can last me all week

My pups have been eating Nulo for at least 4 years now. Took my 17 year old poodle to the vet for a teeth cleaning. He couldn’t believe she was 17. Her teeth were in great shape. Her overall health is very good.

I love Nulo! I would buy these again and again in a heartbeat! This food REALLY takes the cake. My doggos truly love the flavor. OH BOY is it easy to over do it with the good pupperonies. I feed this to my chocolate lab and 2 weimaraniers. The food looks and smells like human grade food. They absolutely love it. Their coats have been more shiny and have had more energy since switching to Nulo.

My dog Enzo love these. I crumble them and add them to his kibble. The main reason for this review is to applaud Chewy’s service. There have been multiple occasions over the past couple of years where I made an error and Chewy wither refunded me or sent the correct product and gave me the opportunity to donate products to local shelters.

I helped run 2 different Cat Rescues and I know what it means to get products donated. And the company empowers their customer service personnel to do this. No waiting on hold for a supervisor approval, or “we’ll get back to you in a few days.

” It is almost always an immediate resolution. This is the primary reason I will remain a loyal Chewy customer. And their pricing is competitive with other stores, vendors, etc. So, thank you Chewy for having well trained, customer focused and friendly associates.

My dogs love this. They can’t wait for the bowl to lower to the floor with this topper on their regular dry dog food. This is the only thing that will satisfy them. They had quit eating their dog food for about 6 months.

I was cooking baked chicken thighs for them. It became very expensive. This is a life saver and money saver for me and my 2 dogs (20lbs each).

This gel has literally saved my dog’s life. After two years of vomiting and diarrhea we did an endoscopy and found he has IBD. Even on prednisone and prescription diet, he would still get reflux, eat grass, vomit on occasion and not want to eat.

After experimenting on my own, I realized he cannot process animal protein. Took him off of capsules made of gelatin, prescription food made with animal protein and flavored heart worm. We use the Nutri-cal to cover his supplements and medication and when he doesn’t eat enough, he sucks this right out of the tube.

I think it feels better on his throat. He also gets a vegetarian diet and I was able to take him off of prednisone and anti vomiting meds. He likes the taste and would rather eat this than his food. I was afraid this would upset his tummy but there were no problems at all and that is rare for Nugget.

It actually stimulates my dog’s appetite! If your dog is willing to take it from a spoon, that’s a great way to deliver it. You can also squeeze dabs of it onto your finger tip (for a small dog) and feed that way.

It’s rather thick — almost the consistency of honey — so another alternative is to liquefy it with just a little water, and deliver it with an eye dropper. Have a wet cloth nearby to wipe your dog’s face/mouth, the tube, and your hands.

My dog is 12 years old and we recently discovered that she has a bad tooth. It is apparently causing her excessive pain (we do have an appointment set to remove it), and she started refusing foods she normally obsesses over about 2 weeks ago.

About a week ago, she stopped eating almost everything we offered, and actually threw up some of the food she did eat (chicken and rice). The last straw was one day during a walk, she suddenly seized up and was unable to move; fortunately home was close, and we were able to lay her on her bed and let her recover.

We were desperate for our usually happy “vacuum cleaner” to get back to normal. She’d lost 10 lbs in just a couple weeks. I finally found this gel, and it has been such a life saver. She licked it up at first, but she started rejecting it.

In order to feed her now, we put olive oil on a tbsp measuring spoon, squirt the gel into the spoon, and then hold her mouth open and dump it into the back of her throat, where she is unable to spit it out.

Arthur, my cavalier puppy, loves the Evolve Grain Free puppy food. Great product at a great price. I was disappointed that when I went to check out I was reminded if I had just doesn&t $8 more my shipping would have been free.

Had I realized that my puppy loves the chicken jerky and the pumpkin latte cookies. I would have bought Arthur some treats too for free shipping.

We started our dachshund puppy on this last year after trying several brands. She is black and tan and you could see lots of skin flakes. Her coat just wasn’t as shiny as it should be. After just a few days you could see an amazing difference.

Her skin wasn’t flaky, her coat was so shiny and her eyes were much brighter. We recently got a cocker puppy and she was not doing as well on the food the breeder had been giving her. After slowly changing her over, she has a lot more energy, her eyes are clear, and her coat (black) is beautiful.

This is a very good quality puppy food. My dog liked it & it didn’t cause digestive issues. I had never heard of this brand but found out it is available at a grocery chain in town. For the price it’s an excellent value & has good ingredients, much better than Big Name Pet Foods.

We however found a puppy food that was a better fit for our girl. It’s more expensive & has overall higher quality ingredients, but that’s not to say Evolve Puppy Food is not a very good food at a Very Good price!!.

May be more expensive choice but I refuse to use nothing but the very best for my fur-babies. Blue is the best and I’ve tried everything there is. Every once in awhile my shih tzus get bored of the everyday same dry food.

Thats when I knownto go out and buy a few cans of blue buffalo’s wet food. This is the same one I usually buy for them. Once I mix it in with some of the dry food they seem to devour all of the food in their bowls.

Works everytime! And I don’t even need to use a whole can every meal or even half a can. A little goes along way when mixing it with the dry food.

I give each of my pets a small serving of wet food in the morning & again in the evening to whet their appetites. I mix it with hot water to melt the fat & make sort of a “gravy” with it. If they are still hungry they can finish up with Blue Buffalo Dry Grain-Free Limited Recipe Small Bites Dog Food.

Small Bites because while the 2 larger dogs can chew the larger bites, my Pomeranian is much older & has few teeth with which to chew. Small bites accommodate my Little Guy much better. They LOVE Blue Buffalo & I TRUST Blue Buffalo to have the best interest of MY dogs & cats at heart.

I bought three cans of the lamb she absolutely loved it. Cleaned her whole plate. I’m going to look into Blue Buffalo limited ingredient as well just not sure my grocery store carrys it. Her Instinct is almost $6 a can.

So I’m pleased she liked it so much and the ingredients seem to be high quality.

TL,DR: if you can, buy the far superior Chiquita banana bread mix. Don’t bother with this stuff. Walmart was out of the Chiquita banana bread mix, so I ordered this instead. It’s not called for except as an “add in” suggestion on the Pillsbury box, but the first (and only) time I tried the Pillsbury, I mixed in two mashed very ripe bananas, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a half a cup or so of chopped walnuts.

With the Chiquita, it’s not an option not to add banana, but after tasting this stuff, I bet if you DIDN’T add any banana to the Chiquita mix, it would still be 100% better tasting than this one. Chiquita banana bread is moist, full of rich banana flavor, and it’s hard not to eat half of it right away as it is delicious.

The Pillsbury version smelled good after coming out of the oven, but after we tasted it, it was unanimous- compared to the Chiquita, this stuff tasted like cardboard. Ok, well maybe not THAT bad- but it was a big step down from the Chiquita brand.

The difference between the two was like enjoying an experienced baker’s yummy homemade banana bread, then being out and about and getting a craving for it, and the only thing you can find is one of those slices of banana bread wrapped in plastic at the corner store.

The plastic wrapped kind is dry, crumbly, and tasteless compared to the homemade. So if you want moist flavorful banana bread- don’t buy this stuff. Get the Chiquita. The Pillsbury isn’t horrible, and it is certainly edible (that’s what the two stars is for), but after you’ve tried the Chiquita- it’s a huge step down in quality.

Smelled great while it was baking in the oven! Son came in and stated “l dont know what your making, but it smells good!” Well that was the extent of it, smelled good in oven but really kind of bland flavor wise.

Note the two positive reviews both added components to their recipes. l guess for a basic start it is ok , but alone kind of bland. Will have to heat some in microwave and use some honey butter for flavor.

It was easy to make , no milk need just eggs and oil. And it did come out very moist , so if you doctor up the recipe its a good starting point.

Price was reasonable for the amount of bread. Add a bit more oil than recipe calls for and include at least a tablespoon (or two) of cinnamon powder. I use unsweetened almond milk (no water) and the mix tastes almost gourmet.

I added my own frozen blueberries and they ended up tasting delicious! I expected them to be a little bit more on the dense side because they contain more protein than other processed foods but the taste was great and so easy to make! I liked that the instructions left room for you to have fun with it and add your own preferences as well! Will be buying again!.

The Double Chocolate Quick Bread recipe on the muffin mix box – made with chocolate chips and yogurt – is to die for! It comes out enormously lofty, light, fluffy and moist. Note: this is not a low-calorie treat but is quite rich! This recipe can also be baked in a muffin pan (makes 12 muffins).

Needed: whole bag of mix, 1 1/2 cups yogurt, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/4 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup oil, 3/4 cup chocolate chips. I sometimes add fewer chocolate chips and rarely add the extra sugar. I also add one teaspoon of instant espresso powder + 1 tsp chocolate extract.

For the yogurt, I thin down Greek yogurt (with milk, nondairy milk, or water) since that’s what I always have in my fridge anyway. They look especially pretty made with white chocolate or peanut butter chips!.

My teenager daughter and I love this mix. We make these once a week and store them in the fridge or freezer for a fast school morning breakfast – we serve 1 muffin with fresh berries, Fairlife milk, and turkey sausage for a complete breakfast that is ready in 1 minute.

I substitute Fairlife milk for the regular milk and also for the oil to get more protein and keep the calories down (although they come out a bit dry without the oil, so be sure but to overbake). They are very chocolatey and not overly sweet.

This is a chocolate muffin with fiber and protein that you can feel good about, and if you adjust your expectations and don’t expect this to taste like birthday cake, you will probably like them. I recommend spraying your muffin tin rather than using liners, as the liners can be difficult to remove.

For those counting macros, 1 muffin (prepared with 1 egg and 10oz 2% Fairlife milk) is 8. 4g protein, 21. 8g carbs, 3. 1g fat, 144 cal. Target, please don’t ever stop carrying this mix!.

Picky dog owners, look no further… the Farmina flavors are the only brand my dog will consistently eat. The boar flavor is her favorite but this is a close second. The texture is minced/shredded meat with lots of broth, almost like in between a pate and shreds.

Farmina makes all their foods low glycemic and highly digestible, which is really good for most animals but especially if your animals struggle with weight or are diabetic, this is a good food. They are also all limited ingredient which is helpful for allergies.

The dry food line is also excellent and is the only dry food that doesn’t cause my cat with weight issues to balloon. Farmina is a vet brand from Italy. Although it is expensive it is a much higher quality than the vet brands we are familiar with in the US.

I also noticed a big difference in health feeding this vs other “premium” brands that do not have a strong veterinary backing. Best of both worlds with Farmina; veterinarian backed AND high quality.

This food is expensive but, was well worth it. I understand what is happening in the country with the economy but, I am not paying more for more water, less food. Maybe it is the blueberries? Unfortunately, I will not be purchasing this one flavor.

I didn’t notice this happening to the other ones. I hope they don’t change. My little girl has health issues, Farmina is easier for her to digest.

I had read a few reviews complaining about what the food looks like when you open the can. Its just solidified fat and when you heat up the food it melts in to a delicious meal. I use it as a kibble topper for my fussy Mini Aussie and he ate it so I am sold on the quality and tastiness of this food.

I have just ordered more flavors today to see if he likes them.

my 10 month old norwegian elkhound loves the beef cheek rolls. She could chew them all day , so I have to hide it off & on during the day. She likes the grain-free sky recipe food. I also want to thank you for letting me know that this recipe is better for her at her age.

I had originally ordered the grain-free land recipe, which you did inform me I should use when she is 12 months old due to some ingredient which is not in the puppy one. I also like the 5 -four lb. paks, as I am 76 years of age which makes it easier for me to handle one bag at a time.

It seems to be a good food and my dogs eat it happily. They are not fussy eaters, though. I am now feeding to just my young female as I continue to assess the new food. My only noticeable issue with the food is that it produces large stools.

I have actually reduced her meal amounts and still the stools are much larger (but firm) than on the Victor Beef and Brown Rice formula. So, my thought is there is more filler in the Red Barn product.

I am not sure that the value is there to continue to feed your product on a regular basis. Victor, 40# runs $35. 00. RB 22# is $52. 00 discounted online. I think I will try the air dried as a topper instead of continuing the kibble.

My dog started suffering from hot spots in the fall, and I modified her diet to be grain free, as well as started her on salmon oil and allergy supplements and after months of struggles she finally isn’t scratching herself nonstop.

As part of maintaining her progress, I decided to switch her from a lamb based diet to a fish based food and this one fit the bill. You can smell the salmon when you open the bag. This stuff smells just as fishy as the salmon oil I give her, so I take that as a good sign that the 5 top ingredients in this food are what she needs for her dry skin.

The grain free aspect is supposed to curb potential skin allergies. So far so good with switching her to this food. She eats it up happily too. My hopes are that her skin stays healthy even when her allergy supplements run out as I can’t afford to be buying so many different products to prevent itching and hotspots so fingers crossed putting her on a seafood diet will be enough to keep her skin from getting dry and irritated every winter.

These are both a hit and a miss for my 2 aussiedoodle girls. We purchased several bags of each flavor to give them a solid shot. There is some SERIOUS inconsistency from bag to bag and even patty to patty.

The beef is the worst offender for this issue. Of the 8 or so bags we went through, they ranged from almost fluffy and spongy, easily breakable pieces in a shade of tan to rock solid, difficult to break apart in a shade of very dark brown like a severely overcooked burger.

The lighter and softer patties went over really well during meals while the harder, darker ones were often tossed out of the bowl and completely rejected. The previous sale on Tylees made them worth the try, but you could only take advantage once.

The regular price coupled with the varied issues of quality make these a pass going forward.

I have an extremely picky, raw-fed, Standard Poodle Service Dog. He’s given only the best and I’ve been considering trying this product for a while. We’ve used them so far as treats (fed dry) and rehydrated as a raw meal topper.

My guy was happy both ways and the price-point is excellent. We also use these patty-style freeze-dried raw pieces as snacks on the go when we’ll be out past meal times or he doesn’t eat breakfast. So far, these seem equitable to the Stella&Chewy’s brand and will be added to our ‘snack’ rotation.

Like the other Tylee’s products, these meal mixers are made of good quality ingredients and have a fairly strong meat smell (a good sign)! In comparison to the popular freeze dried raw brand, Stella and Chewy’s, and their beef meal mixer product, this product is noticeably harder/more brittle and tougher to crumble and break apart.

I haven’t tried rehydrating fully yet but it seems like these morsels will take longer to fully rehydrate and soften given how they seem harder and less porous. My dog and cat are both fine with the taste and these are slightly cheaper than Stella & Chewy’s, which is why I bought them in the first place! If you want to feed only raw then it is likely a pricey option for any size breed, but these are good to add to meals as a healthy topper.

I have a 3 yo black lab and she really enjoys these treats. I put enough into her treat ball to last a while and she will get them out when she wants. She is very happy that she doesn’t have to wait for me to get her a treat unless the ball is empty.

Chewy is prompt in getting my orders out and prices are comparable to the stores I shop at. I also like that I don’t have to haul a 10# box of dog treats (I also get the Milk Bone dental treats) and 40# bag of dog food into the house all the time.

I would recommend buying from Chewy.

I usually don’t order anything that doesn’t have natural or “ clean” ingredients but I thought I would give these a try since they’re very much affordable. Because they’re not the best for dogs, he doesn’t get them often.

However, while giving my boy a few treats, I was stabbed by the literal wood chips sticking out the side of this small bone treat. Glad It cut me and not him. Will never order Milk Bone again!.

My dogs love these! I have 2 greyhounds, and although these are quite small, I find the size to be handy for training and rewards. One of my greys does not like the smaller hard treats (she will eat the bigger hard milk bones though, she has an overbite so it may be hard for her to eat the smaller ones for that reason), anyway she loves these! It’s something I can give both of them and they like the variety of flavors.

I own a super picky Cane Corso. I mean, when it comes to people food he turns his nose up at anything with sugar or anything processed. even meat. Processed lunchmeat. nope. Real ham or loin, beef, chicken yes.

He likes this dog food. After reading the ingredients so do I. A friend of mine was boasting about the dog food he feeds, saying I should try Kane on it. Pedigree High Protein. 27% Protein 12% Fat. First ingredients Ground whole grain corn, meat and bone meal (source of calcium) The next is kind of a meat.

chicken by-product meal ?????? I dont remember a time I fed store food to my dogs but I am shocked people buy it. Read the ingredients of any Taste of the Wild food. It is a known fact wild meat naturally caries a higher vitamin content.

I applaud the makers of this food that they make it available for my dog. Yes, it costs a little more. But my dog is a giant and he has NO joint issues, bone issues, or structure issues. His coat glistens and feels softer than smooth velvet, he is extremely curious and smart as a whip.

I can teach him most things in a few minutes. and his energy level makes it easy to keep him well muscled and in excellent shape. and he likes it.

I used to buy Taste of the Wild from a pet food chain until they suddenly discontinued it – which coincidentally was around the same time that Fleet Farm started selling it. Taste of the Wild was considered to be one of the top high quality brands among all the other expensive featured dog foods at the other retailer.

Now you can get it at a fraction of the cost at Fleet Farm. I am thrilled because this has been my choice of dog food for many years. My dogs never get tired of it. They scarf it down so fast I don’t know how they actually enjoy it – other than their sense of smell.

I buy various flavors to change things up once in a while and one thing that makes my pups super happy is that I top the hard food with Taste of the Wild’s canned food. Just add a teaspoon of that in their bowl and there won’t be one crumb left in the bowl.

Healthy food, high quality, and you will not get a better price anywhere. Don’t buy junk food for you pets. get this product. Your pets will thank you.

All dry food is garbage made from mostly plant material and junk, and disguised as a meat product. That said, I think this one isn’t as bad as most. I think it’s better than some that sell for nearly twice as much.

However, it was one of the many brands of grain-free dog foods that caused congestive heart failure in many thousands of dogs by not providing enough taurine. Taste of the Wild now adds taurine, so I presume that is resolved.

Luckily, I feed my dogs 50% dry and 50% raw meat and organs, so they had plenty of taurine. Most TotW varieties also have a pretty terrible Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio. The ratio for dogs (and humans) should be 4:1, but TotW varieties range anywhere from 10:1 to nearly ideal (in 1 variety).

If you feed this food (or almost any food), you should balance the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio with added omega-3s. I use human grade fish oil. Finally, the formula changes almost continuously. Thats true of all TofW dry foods, and many other dry foods.

Each variety used to have at least 4 fresh meat types listed 1st, then meat meal type, then vegetable matter as tubers and legumes, then chicken fat. The brand gradually went through changes that reduced the fresh meat, increased the legumes and tubers, changed the fat sources to suboptimal plant oils (high in omega-6, among other things), replaced good meat protein with questionable “egg product,” and then even that animal protein source with such trash as pea protein, all to increase their profit margin even as the brand has made huge gains in popularity availability which, clearly, already increases profits exponentially.

There really isn’t a good excuse for the decrease in quality, but it happens with every brand of dog food I’ve ever (initially) been happy with. So READ the LABEL on EVERY BAG. Take a picture of the ingredients, and watch for those sneaky changes.

There will soon come a time when Taste of the Wild is just as bad as any other brand, and it’ll be time to find another little company that hasn’t (yet) made profit margins their sole focus.

My dog is a picky eater and because of that, it can be hard to keep his stomach full enough so that he doesn’t throw up bile, which is extremely unpleasant. I’ve been using the gel to top his food.

I just use a small amount, maybe half a teaspoon, and he absolutely loves it! He seems to help his appetite so I’ve been very pleased with this product. The smell takes some getting used to. The smell reminds me of baby food.

I wish it were easier to get out. The product is thick and the tube makes application quite messy. Other than that, loving this!.

Love this mix! Easy to throw together to pair with some chili! Love making the muffins! 20 minutes and done! Follow the advice on the box and let the batter rest for 3-4 minutes is the best for getting a better muffin top! Everyone knows that’s the best part so before you scoop the batter into the muffin tin … let it sit for a few! You won’t be sorry! Highly recommend this corn muffin goodness!.

Love this mix. Inexpensive, easy, versatile and consistent. There are a ton of “hacks” out there to improve it/switch it up further. My favorite is following the recipe as described, and then adding a spoon full of sugar and dollop of sour cream for extra delicious corn bread.

Adding chopped fresh jalepenos and shredded cheddar is a second favorite.
