19 Best Sand Spike For Surf Fishing (2023 Updated)

Family has had sets for over a year now. I have personally taken my set to cape scott (3 days) and this year the west coast trail (6 days). They far exceeded my expectations. These are rough trails with lots of mud, dirt roots and miles of mossy canted broken down boardwalk.

These spikes are confidence for your feet!, you can walk on a mossy greasy boardwalk easily, balance on an old log across a gully stretch out to the next root and stick the landing. The entire family are believers now.

on the west coast trial, when the beaches ended and the forest trails began, the spikes went on, after the first day there was no question, everyone wanted them on. My set have probably 160 km of hard hiking with backpack and the spikes only show slight wear.

even on dirt they find traction, the only time they slip is stuff like wet clay that not much will help with. We had two occasions where a metal link opened up and we had to squeeze it back together with a multi-tool plier.

Get the smallest size you can get over your boot – I am size 10Mens boot and used L but probably should have had M. The exospike model by same company has a slightly better design how it goes around toe, I’d buy those instead when I replace these.

Great traction in the city in snow and ice with seamless transitions to concrete, so they perform exactly as described. And zero worries about them falling off your shoes, as you’d expect from Kahtoola.

I wear women’s 8 or 8. 5 shoes 90% of the time, so went for the small. Definitely think I’d have been better off with the medium, though, as I guess some GTX trail running shoes are bulkier and more rigid than regular soft runners.

Have only worn them twice but after running for an hour, they squeeze my feet to create too much pressure in a couple of spots. I’d probably be on the way to developing blisters if I kept going for too much longer.

Marked “runs small” for this review but my issue could be my feet (they’re on the narrow side of a regular B width) and/or my choice of footwear. so this is an FYI not a bad review and certainly not suggesting that the manufacturer doesn’t know what it’s doing.

Every year it feels like I end up buying a new pair of traction devices – this year was the nanospike. So far with only a couple days of ice they seem great! The right level of traction for safely walking + running around the city after a melt and freeze.

They are light enough and easy enough to put on that I feel comfortable carrying them around just in case. I wear a size 13 shoe and ordered the biggest size – it worked out! The bad: Altitude’s shipping – I ordered two pairs and the second pair still hasn’t shown up Sizing – I just ordered the biggest and it worked out but if my feet were smaller I wouldnt have felt confident picking a size.

Level of traction – I wouldn’t trust these for more then city life – I want something bigger and burlier for hilly wilderness.

I bought micro spikes from Icegripper, in 2010, which got me through that awful winter. I felt so smug walking around the streets in Scotland whilst others slid around like bambi, or worse, were stuck indoors.

When I heard winter weather was on its way this year I bought a pair of nanospikes for myself and my Mum, who is 89. We had unusually cold temperatures recently, keeping snow and ice around longer than usual. I don’t have the best balance, and have a dog that while usually good on leash, will occasionally pull. Combined with our steep Seattle hills, I’ve never felt confident going out for more than a very short, timid dog walk.

Yesterday I walked 7 miles through snow and icy sidewalks; up and down hills with complete confidence. They’re low profile so no problem walking on bare pavement. I passed by many people tiptoeing around the ice.

I only wish I’d discovered these years ago!.

Bought these thinking they would probably be ok and work for a couple times. I was wrong these are high quality and will last a long long time. Super easy to hammer in the sand with a rubber mallet, or as we did the first time when we forgot a mallet, dig a hole with your hand and push and twist them in.

Work better than expected and are a phenomenal deal! I’m ordering 4 more at this great price.

Sure. there isn’t much to a sand spike and yeah. it’s pretty easy to make one yourself for next to nothing but given that this costs just a few bucks anyway I feel like it’s worth it in the time saved not having to make that steep angled cut across a PVC pipe that they achieve on the “spike end.

” The flared lip is a nice touch as well. I suppose they could have sanded the edges a bit to remove the snags but again. for a few bucks that’s beyond nitpicking. Simple, inexpensive and works. what more do you need?.

I literally broke both of them on their 1st use pushing them u to the sand. This was VERY soft beach sand and the tips bent. They ended uo snapping offand probably worked better after that. They worked well and I have no complaints.

They help 8 foot long shore rods and they never fell over.

Great sand spike for bay fishing. Holds the lighter poles just fine. I use completely different spikes for my surf rods.

Bought four of these don’t waste your money go to hardware store buy schedule 40 pvc make your own. They are thin plastic that the ends bend over on when trying to push them into sand.

I have bought various sizes over the years, but I find the 6 oz is the sure fire in just about any condition. Pros -will hold the bottom on even some of the roughest days. -will hold bottom with big baits in current.

-in tandem with a sinker slide, even good for small baits. -pretty much a must in some form or another. Cons -the beads which are supposed to keep the legs in place never stay on and often are misaligned.

They still work without but definitely makes the legs break away easier. -sometimes line gets wrapped in the legs but legs are VERY much a necessary evil. Pyramids just get dragged in any kind of current, especially on the long cast.

Overall, if you surf fish in any kind of strong currents, rough surf, or big baits, you’re going to need them or prepare for a mountain of frustration as your lines tangle and you have to recast 1000 times cause your baits are washed up on shore.

After just a few casts, the beads fall off the wires rendering them useless in the surf. I will not be buying these again

I bought these rod holders to substitute for the short cork screw type rod holders. I have several 8 foot to 10 foot rods that I use for bank fishing. This worked really well for my long fishing rods.

They even worked well on my shorter fishing rods. I will concur with some reviews that the spikes need to be pointier or sharper. I myself use a rubber mallet to hammer them securely into the ground.

I would definitely buy these over some of the other fishing rod holders.

Ordered product online and shipped to store. That process went well. The item was a little slight for what I intended to use it for, surf fishing costal NC. I use 11′ surf rods and I can lose my gear if the rod holders fail.

Solid and well built. Holds my pole securely. Only issue is the spike had to be trimmed to a slightly finer point so as to be sunk into the ground in our area.

Bought this pole over a year ago and seriously did not think it was going to work, however, was I wrong! This pole is amazing and I’m using it on a Yamaha 19′ center console with a T Top that acts as a sail in high winds.

As long as there is a soft bottom, and the pole is sunk about half the length (3-4′), it will hold your boat. Compared to the mounted Power Pole prices this is a great alternative!.

I love this Power Pole it is worth its weight in GOLD! Before this it was very difficult for me to anchor in areas especially when there was a tough current or a lot of boat traffic. The first time I used it we were able to get to the perfect spot and anchor using this and our sand anchor our boat did not move.

I have the micro anchor but lost the pole on the way to the Gulf coast. without it the rest is useless. found this anchor pole at Tackle Direct. price was right on and shipped within days. outstanding TD.

Stainless twisted steel, nice quality but too short, I find when fishing Wafters the bait comes off very easily. Maybe ok for smaller bait but little use for my method feeder fishing.

Good quality, but very short. Doubt they would hold anything bigger than a 10mm boilie.

Love these. Would not walk on all the snow and ice we get without them. Only con is that they used to sell Small, Medium, etc. Now their smallest size is a Small/Medium. Not sure if that is why, but my left Yaktrax has a tendency to come off every few days.

Doesn’t take much to put it back on, but I have to notice it happened first.

These spikes make winter walking enjoyable! We live in Northern Idaho, at about 3,000 ft. and we’re surrounded by dirt roads. The snow on the roads melts and freezes into a thick slab of ice making walking treacherous! The sm/med spikes fit easily and snugly on my women’s size 7 Merrills.

My husband and I walk at least 2 miles every day and I haven’t slipped yet! I’m so happy with this product! Thank you Yaktrax!.

They fit comfortably over my boots and sneakers. I took several long walks and was able to walk quickly, with confidence, without slipping. A few people noticed and actually stopped me in the street to ask where I got them, because they wanted to buy a pair for themselves.

I give these 5 stars and will never go out in snowy, icy conditions without these.

IšverstiShow in original languageThis lure looks great and is very weedless. Does a neat flutter on a stop. Got a nice 3lb LMB BUT I have no idea why I haven’t got a lot more. The Pro version has a good hook and a well placed slot for the hook.

Plastic feels resilient. It’s summer and the vegetation is thick-so it will be in the rotation again.

IšverstiShow in original languageCatches fish great in both salt and fresh. The body itself is durable Only issue is the plastic is hard and tough to adhere to jig. Heads. Best way i found to fish it is long casts, sink to bottom an a slow stead retrieve and fish slam it.

I purchased these Sand Flea-flavored fish bites with a smudge of skepticism. Simply because I’ve had little luck with the other flavors. One day, I decided to Google how NOT to catch catfish – because who wants to be on the ocean and catch those pesky things anyway?! So, it brought me to the idea of trying something within the nature of sand fleas.

Ya know, something different! So I bought these, tried them out, and sure enough my son caught a Flounder! These hooked me some White Trout, Mangrove Snapper, and more! Guess what?! NO catfish so far!!! So, I do recommend these Sand Flea Fish Bites! The only thing I don’t like about ’em is they’re not made as durably as the others, and therefore they dissolve quicker.

But if you want a little spin on your fishing adventures, go ahead and buy a few packs of these! I’m sure you won’t be sorry.

I got up before daylight to check online for the fishing conditions. It looked like a perfect morning to fish, but I had no bait except for a bag of Fishbites Fish ‘n’ Strips Sand Flea that I had ordered from TackleDirect.

com. So I headed out and got a rod set up before the sunrise. I was working a lure with my second rod when I heard my first rod fall over and hit the sand. Something big had pulled the sand spike over.

I fought that fish for what seemed like an eternity, and when I finally got him onto the beach, I was surprised to see it was a Permit. Passersby were equally shocked to learn that it was caught on Fishbites Fish ‘n’ Strips Sand Flea.

Awesome! These precut crab strips had the fish going crazy. The fish ate the whole strip compared to the longer strips. I did not find the shrimp precut strips. I prefer the pre cut strips verses the long strip.

I have had a short life when it comes to fishing. Recently I had to get some fishing equipment before heading out in the Northern Wisconsin area for a fishing trip. I believe I bought the 1/4 oz SteelShad lure and had very little expectations.

After trying out more expensive lures and things I decided to give this one a try since none else was working. On the 5th cast I got my first fish of the trip. Now this may come hard to believe but on that 5th cast I got five more bites ranging from Walleye, Bass, and Crappie (I believe these are the names as I state later on I am no expert).

One may say “that just luck” well I bought the two pack of these lures and my buddy got the same exact “luck” as I. The next day I went out in the mornin and got 9 more fish. I am not a “good” or “experience” fisherman in the slightest.

What I do know is that these lures right here are one of the best lures I have ever used and I will continue to choose these over the competition. The vibration along with the swimming pattern these lures make just work.

Please give em a try and good luck out there. (In reference to the photos I was only fishing off a 15 foot dock and have not got to try these lures out in the deeper depths). MY ONLY COMPLAINT is that the lure I used during the whole trip lost one of the 3 prongs, but still works like a charm.

I purchased this blade bait a few weeks back, and have been very satisfied with it. I would give it 5 stars, but the hardware was, to word it kindly, sub-par. At least it was on my particular lure. I was actually losing more hooked fish than I was landing.

I lost so many hooked fish, that I am able to be certain in saying that this was not operator error. Upgraded the hooks to #6 Gamakatsu EWG Trebles and have landed every fish I have hooked since. And MAN, does this thing drive the fish crazy! I have the 1/2 oz lure in “Tennessee Shad” and I have caught a fish with this lure every time I have tied it on! I have caught them by both jigging, and cranking.

Two years later I am still using the silver 1/4 ounce steel shad for the majority of my fishing. Since my last review I have found that updating the hooks with Mustad 2x number 12 hooks has greatly increased the species of fish that I can catch with this lure.

Last fall I had a day fishing for largemouth bass that I caught and landed and released 38 ranging from 1 to 4 pounds from one spot on the bank. And just last week I caught and released 43 white bass with the two largest ones weighing 3lbs 4oz and 3lbs 13oz respectively.

Two boats were fishing the same spot next to the bank and they only caught several each fishing the exact same waters. The fishermen wanted to know what I was using so I shared the information with them.

I recently purchased one of the Michigan Stinger spoons online from Bass Pro. They come in a multitude of colors and several sizes. I have successfully used these spoons trolling for walleyes on Lake Erie for years.

Functionality is good based on results. This spoon design in the larger size has consistently produced walleye > 17” ( my personal minimum) in the central basin of Lake Erie. I get two of every color when I restock my tackle.

Michigan Stinger spoons are one of the best on the market. Live in Indiana and troll these on Wabash river, St. Joseph and on the reservoirs. It’s nice that they come in variety of sizes, have caught plenty of fish on them.

Have caught various species- cats, crappie, stripers and pike. Best speeds 1 to 2. 2, we run the spoons behind dipseys an trip divers 10ft-12ft leaders.

My sand spear sank yesterday on a windy day. I have only used it a few times but loved it. I went out yesterday and it was windy. i was trying out my new tackle rack and place the spear up against the rack when plump.

it was gone! I tried to get back into position and retrieve it but it was too windy with dirty water. I would love for this to have an ability to float! Im going back to find this pole on a calm low tide day.

If i find it i”ll definitely attach something to help it float!.

Not bad not really meant for Northern climate or pushing a mud boat around in Montana but there are not many pre-made options out there. The plastic duck foot worries me with the ice and rock we deal with.

Only have 5 or 6 trips using it so far. Collects a lot of mud on both ends when pushing with it. Hunt out of our boat almost everyday from October 15 till mid February every year. The only reason I am righting this now is we have to get an oil change on the boat tonight and have nothing else to do while it drains.

Get out and do something instead of reading theses reviews it’s a fiberglass rod with a point on it. You can make one from a closet dowel and a pic of PVC pipe.

Love this spear/push pole. Get yourself some rubber gloves to get a good grip on the spear when you’re using it as a push pole. Mine got stuck on something and slipped off my hands, I lost it in the dark waters.

But pretty great to be able to anchor around while fishing. Its light, strong, and well made. maybe if it the next one can float or maybe an attachment that floats.

I bought this 10 pack to replace three of the cleats that fell out of my Simms rubber soled wading boots. The boots were just put into commission this past spring, along with these cleats, so i have used them 6 months, approximation 20 hours/week, so let’s say a bit less than 500 hours total.

I try and remember to tighten them intermittently, but this last outing I noticed I was missing three. In terms of grip, not as good as the hardbite (but about half the price). Also not in the same league as korkers more aggressive soles eg the triple threat carbide wading soles.

If you wade super slippy rivers and your objective is to remain vertical, and perhaps your balance isn’t great, invest in korkers and upgrade to the triple threat soles (downside is they are $70). If you have pretty good balance and aren’t wading the mega slippery stuff, these cleats will do the job and I think are better than most screws I have used for the price.

That is why I am buying them again. Also, the flat aluminum profile is easier on boats and your car (or your buddy’s car).

Third set of cleats, they do grip well until cleat breaks or the screws degrade. Screw holes in soles become unusable after several uses forcing you to place new cleats in less optimal positions. Found using a flexible adhesive like goop in addition to the screws seems to extend the usefulness of cleats/screws.

The product is fantastic no doubt. The problem is they’re not the right cleats for the Simms Tributary Rubber Sole Wading boot. But to be very clear that mistake is all on me not you. I should have researched to make sure they were compatible.

Still a great product.

I troll half lures half live bait on East coast of Florida turbo hammers get the most hits. Especially in the morning hours

The G4 Boots with the hard bite cleats was a recent purchase so I have only used them one day on a freestone stream in the northeast. Installation was very easy and provided excellent traction and stability.

Only time will tell if the system holds up.

Great product, hols well on speed bumps. One suggestion, make them in additional lengths. After a seasons use and pulled up for the winter a longer spike would be nice for the following year. Otherwise units have to be moved to new locations.

Perfect product for my purposes. A simple idea, to weld metal caps on top of rebar, with many practical applications. Perhaps a bit costly per unit if you need to order in bulk.

Just a rebar with a washer welded to the top. It’ll do the job, wish it was had come with primer coat.
