20 Best Jar Opener For Arthritic Hands (2023 Updated)

I have several jars which I could not open by hand or with any of the conventional jar opening aids I had. It’s a breeze with the JarKey. It works by gently popping the vacuum (without damaging the lid) so the lid can be unscrewed easily.

It doesn’t require much hand strength or agility so may be suitable for people with hand mobility issues. I’ve used the JarKey on unopened jars with metal lids with no failures yet. I don’t know if it would work so well on plastic lids or on metal lids that have been opened previously and have become gummed up with food between the lid and the thread part of the jar.

Very easy to use. I first purchased 2 items by chance in NZ two years ago. Gave one to my brother whose health conditions meant his strength was failing. My older sister visited recently …. she suffers from arthritis ……she hadn’t come across this particular Jarkey previously….

tried it…. loved it…. I gave her ours as a small gift then my husband suddenly exclaimed that he didn’t realise we even had this device …and he also then tried it…loved it…. wanted us to have one…. hence why I went online to look for the genuine article….

and have now bought spares in case other visitors try ours. love it…want one for themselves !! :-D.

This type of Jar Opener releases the vacuum thereby making the lid very easy to turn. I have bought several of these, not only for ourselves but for family and friends. It levers up the edge of the lid slightly to allow ingress of air.

The centre of the lid will pop up as the vacuum is released. The lid then unscrews easily. So simple. I think that every home should have one as an essential kitchen accessory, particularly for the elderly or those with weak wrists.

I can therefore highly recommend it.

I am disappointed that the information on this website indicates that the can opener is dishwasher safe, but the can opener comes on a card that says Hand wash only. I just picked it up, have not used it yet, but am 99% sure it is the same model I have had for years.

I would give it 5 stars, except for the uncertainty about putting it in the dishwasher. My hands are not particularly strong. I often use a tool to open jars. This can opener is easier to use than other manual can openers.

One of my friends complained that it did not cut the lids off smoothly enough to prevent them from being risky to cut fingers. This has never been a problem for me; I am just careful with how I handle the cans and lids after opening.

I plan to keep this one since I lost my other one when I moved.

This is a must have for anyone with arthritis! The only drawback is the price new: $145. But once the price barrier is eliminated I can find only one flaw: It does have a height limitation so I can’t use it to take the top off of my travel coffee mug.

This is easy enough for a young child to use and requires absolutely no physical force like some of the other products aimed at arthritis sufferers. In online reviews I have found a general consensus that this product is the best jar opener on the market for arthritis.

I love this thing. I got it for my grandparents who are having trouble as arthritis sets in, and it was super easy to set up. Love that its so easy to use; they dont have to follow a bunch of confusing steps, they just have to hold one big button.

The Black and Decker Lids Off Electric Jar opener is great for the elderly and handicapped who have trouble opening jars. It works best with glass jars as it needs to grip the bottle/jar firmly in the lower jaws to adjust to the diameter of the jar.

Large and small jars don’t seem to be a problem and diameter of the jars can be as small as about 2 inches up to 6-7 inches. at the bottom and lids can be about the same diameter range. You can easily handle a 5 inch bottle bottom and a 2-3 inch lid opening.

My friend had one for almost 15 years and finally wore it out where the bottom adjustment was hard to open and close; hence the search for a replacement. The unit is fairly quiet and easily used with one hand opening which can be important for stroke victims.

We had an older version of a Swing-A-Way can opener that did not have the gears that this new one does. It relied on the notched wheel to grip the rim of the can to achieve the friction it needed to roll around the can rim and cut the lid.

We had it for at least 20 years! Over the years I modified the older one several times – sharpened the roller blade, deepened the slots on the handle so the blade could penetrate deeper into the can and cleaned and lubed it many times because the roller blade got so gunked up the blade would not turn.

(Point of information: if the rolling blade on a can opener does not turn, it is because it has collected food liquids that solidified in the roller blade axle. Usually just running that blade under very hot water will dissolve the gunk and the blade will turn again.

I did this many times!) This new one has gears that turn the roller blade, so it can’t stop turning. Eventually, all of these handheld can openers will wear out at the notched wheel that grips the underside of the can rim.

Once that happens, it’s time to replace it because there is no way to re-cut the notches in that wheel (that I know of yet). Yes, this is long review, but I have always been a believer in “repair” vs.

“replace” if at all possible. I’m a kind of Do ItYourselfer as you may have guessed. Who else would spend time repairing and modifying a $5 can opener??? Me! I’ve used these for years, a must have for every kitchen, and work shop. And get 2. Crippled hands? Weak grip? Your grip is better for tools too. Hang one from the doorknob. huge help. And the red color makes them easier to spot.

Does a good job of adjusting to the cap and opened the cap easily. Care must be given to not crush the cap and/or break the glass bottle if glass is present and excessive pressure is applied. I felt that the pliers-type gripper could produce enough pressure to damage the top of a glass bottle if excessive grip force was applied.

There’s no feedback as to proper pressure being applied. Just go easy and slow. I also felt that the chromed metal pincers that contact the metal cap could have been rubber coated to get a better grip and safely open the cap with less chance of crushing the cap under excessive pincer pressure.

Also, I wish the tool had a ‘keep closed” latch when the unit is stored. The swing arm stays all the way out away from the opener when stored in the kitchen tool drawer. When not in use, I use a small ladies hairband wrapped twice around the tool to hold the swing lever closed inward against the main body of the unit.

Other than these suggested modifications, the tool performed well when careful pressure was applied.

I have used one of these openers for many years, and when a friend with arthritic hands complained about being unable to open screw-top bottles and metal-lid glass jars from the supermarket, I knew this kind of opener would be ideal for him.

You just place the clamp over the lid and slip the clamp to its closest position to the lid diameter as you can get. Then you simply squeeze the handle to keep the clamp from slipping off (this may dent a metal lid slightly), and turn CCW with the long handle for very good leverage.

The clamping action across the lid diameter is much better than using the “V” shaped openers, which for me tend to slip when used with metal lids on glass jars. I cannot remember ever having trouble using this opener for screw top and metal lid jars.

I wasn’t sure this type of opener was still being made by Swing-A-Way, the brand I bought long ago, and I was delighted to find new ones on eBay. You can’t beat a tried-and-true design, and I highly recommend this type of opener.

Excellent service. Arrived quickly and are as described. Bought Gripper Jar Opener as jar of marmalade defeated me. I have several pepper grinders that don’t work so I bought the Spice Ratchet Grinder.

Both products are very good quality and work brilliantly.

It looks well made and so should last, but the first jar I tried it on it failed to work. It would not grip the metal lid and just slipped around so I was forced to run hot water over the lid before trying again.

I exerted as much pressure on handles as possible and after more slipping around lid eventually opened it. If you have weak painful hands and wrists gripping the handles tight enough to grip the lid is as bad as trying to open without it.

The problem with all of these things is whilst they may or not grip the lid and apply leverage you still have to hold the jar itself in the other hand so only half a solution ! Disappointing and no better than a cheap rubber one I have.

I’m so happy to finally find a great can opener! I’ve got thru 5 different can openers from various brands and none of them were good. They would either partially open the cans or the handles were uncomfortable.

This one is different though. It opens cans so easily and smoothly. It is like cutting thru butter. The handles are big so my hands don’t hurt. I love this thing! it was pricey but worth the $17!.

The first one I purchased work fine for several years, although one of the rubber handle covers fell off. I replaced it last year with this exact same can opener. The rubber handle came off within the first use, which isn’t a dealbreaker since I can easily glue it back on.

However, it didn’t cut well from day one. It would only make it part way around the lid before crushing up the metal without cutting at all. I’d reset it on the can and kind of limp around the rest of the lid until I could lift it up.

One year later it is functioning at 0% capacity.

Where has this item been all my life? I have small hands and with age, they have arthritis. Recently even my husband with large and strong hangs was unable to open a jar. We tried every trick and finally had to through the jar and it’s contents out because we couldn’t open it in 2 days of attempts.

I saw this when I started looking for jar openers. I wondered if it would work, but it was inexpensive enough to try. I have since used it several times. This really helps break that suction so I can twist off lids without destroying them so that they can still be used on the jar! No need to waste time and energy trying all the trick AND it takes almost no room in my drawer!!.

This tool is absolutely wonderful. I was skeptical at first since it is so inexpensive but the first time I used it I was a believer. Have used it numerous times and it is nice when you hear the pop of the deal breaking.

Then it is so easy to open the lids. I pnly had 1 jar where the lid was too big for this tool to hold onto. We struggled with opening it but I wrapped a thick rubber band around the lid and that gave it enough traction for me to open it.

I bought one for my daughter and daughter in law for this Christmas as stocking stuffers.

I would never manage to open a vacuum packed jar if i did not have this jarskey. It is one of the most useful kitchen gadget i have purchased. I bought one for my friend who has a weak grip due to severe arthritis and carpel tunnel operations on both wrists.

She has tried other products on the market but she struggles to grip those enough to loosen a lid , so i got this for her and she loves it. She said its the best gift she has had. It just allows the air to escape and makes the lid loose enough to open without too much effort, you only need to lock it under the rim of the lid and pull upwards slightly to release the vacuum and hey presto.

You don’t need to have a man around to open the jar for you either, so that is an added bonus.

I have had one of these jarkeys for over 20 years. It knocks spots off all the expensive mechanical gadgets. It is far easier to use and a lot cheaper. I have now bought 2 for friends. A fabulous gadget!.

This smooth touch electric can opener is just that – smooth to use. Tall enough for all cans. Looks smart on the counter. Leaves NO sharp edges at all. I always thought that if the lid came off with no sharp edges, then the can itself would have a sharp edge all around the top.

Wrong! Somehow this can opener manages to cut the top off and leave a smooth, non-sharp lid which is harmless to anyone, and also a smooth, rolled top all around the can – I now feel comfortable leaving an opened can in the ‘fridge with lid on and no worries that someone else will cut themselves if they pick it up.

My biggest sense of comfort comes from the fact that NO ANIMALS will ever cut themselves if they forage in recycling bins – mine or the destination of my cans once picked up by the Blue Bin folk. I always consider this whenever I discard anything, even cutting plastic bags up so no little creature gets stuck inside.

Now I know my washed cans will cause no harm to anyone or anything – great.

I have had this can opener for about a year. It’s a nice design and at first I really liked it. I love the way it secures the can when you mash the top. All the others are such a hassle trying to get the can aligned so it will work.

I dislike having to hold the top down for it to actually cut open the can. The main issue with this model can opener for me is that about 99% of the time, it cuts the can where the glue is and you have to take the time to remove the glue from the top of the can before using the contents.

Another big issue is there are metal strips along the outside top of the can especially where the final cut is. Who wants metal being in their food causing a potential health hazard. This can opener definitely has flaws and Hamilton Beach should find a way to remedy them.

It would be worth it’s weight in gold if those problems didn’t exist. As for me, I am tired of having to make sure glue and metal aren’t going in my food. Time to find another can opener.

It’s OK. Average for a can opener. I bought it to replace another brand, practically new, which often doesn’t work well the first time – skips over sections of the can or pops right off. I thought that meant my other brand was an inferior product.

But this EZ Duz It opener sometimes does the same thing, even though also brand new. I’m starting to believe that it’s some cans that are being made differently than they used to be, that it’s not the fault of the can openers but rather the cans themselves.

Either way, I was disappointed that the EZ Duz It didn’t work as flawlessly as some reviews said it did. My guess is that it depends on what brand of cans you’re opening, and that some of them are made differently now.

Whatever the reason, it’s frustrating. Opening cans was a simple endeavor all my life until recently. Something’s changed. If it’s not the openers, it’s the cans.

But they still lack the american ingenuity. Well its A real pleasure to write A review on this product the EZ DUZ IT can opener made here in the USA. It has A larger handle for one thing and the roller cutting disc sure seems larger diameter also.

Its finished just rough enough to cut and crimp clean on the roll of the opened lid. Sounds simple but getting things just right is more difficult than it seems sometimes. I will most certainly get some more.

A few at the time to have and give to other family members. Its just so nice to get ones hands on something good these days that works and are quality products. Boy what we took for granted in those good old days of past.

This is the best can opener I’ve ever used. Once the opener is attached to the can (a useful diagram is included) you simply hold the can and turn the handle on the opener. The opener then works it’s way effortlessly around the top of the can.

The opener also rounds off the edges of the can and lid so there are no sharp edges. That is especially useful if the opener is going to be used by youngsters or the infirm. The opener copes easily with cans that have angled corners (such as sardines or corned beef cans) and that’s very handy if you have lost the key or it has broken off.

The opener is very good quality and made from high grade stainless steel. There’s an arrow to show where to apply a drop of oil and I use silicon lubricant (from any motorist shop). I spray a light film over the opener after washing to protect it from any corrosion.

This has been on my wishlist for about 2 years now and I wish I had just gone ahead an bought it back then. My Ikea stainless steel opener dropped and broke sadly so I thought I would treat myself to this beauty.

I have little storage space in my kitchen so this small, useful item is perfect. Most cans I buy have ring pulls but probably 3/10 don’t so this is great to have on hand. It is quite weighty for a small item and it took a little fathoming out but then, joy! So easy and comfortable to use.

After a lifetime of using openers with the standard two piece handle (for the left hand) and the wing nut style opener (for the right hand), this little one comes as a bit of a shock because it has no handle.
