20 Best Women’S Cold Weather Running Gear (2023 Updated)

Just saw that Moosejaw was doing 25% off, and I absolutely took advantage of that deal to get another pair of these socks. I am going to be wearing them for adventuring 3/4’s of the year, depending on winter temps maybe even longer into the winter season.

For the previous bunch of years I have gone with Darn Tough (which I am not knocking at all in this review), however from now I will be going with this choice from now on, and over the last half year have used them many times, for hikes up to and over 20miles in the ADK and Catskills.

These socks rock. Perfect thickness for me: light enough for summer, stout enough probably for everything except thicker socks in the coldest winter. Great cushioning right where you want and need it.

I always pack at least one extra pair of socks and usually change them out at least once during the day, but on my last big hike for a few reasons I never took off my runners and did not change my socks during the 20miler, and my GoreTex runners definitely let some water in, and kept some in.

But by the end of the long day I had no hotspots or blisters with just the one pair of socks. I think I am really getting more pairs so that I will be able to also wear them as my everyday socks, with how comfortable they are.

I received my pair of socks through the Smartwool insider program and I have been extremely pleased with them! They are extremely comfortable to wear, and I found the extra cushion welcome during my 8 hour retail shift.

I would say they fit true to size, I usually wear a size 8 shoe and the medium fits well. These socks do stretch out, by the second day i found they were fitting looser than before. they do affect the fit of your footwear and if recommend trying on boots with these socks as they definitely affect the fit of your footwear.

I used these socks mainly in my daily life and I plan to use them during the winter in my boots to keep my feet toasty warm. Dispute their warmth my feet never felt sweaty or damp, the socks kept moisture away from my feet.

Overall I am very pleased with the socks and will continue to get lots of life out of them. #SmartwoolLove.

A nice sock. I wear Smartwool socks in the winter season indoors to keep my feet warm, and cotton socks the other seasons. My shoe size is 10. 5 but I always buy XL Smartwool socks as I like socks that fit rather than socks that need to stretch to fit, as Smartwool socks tend to do.

Also the XL size aren’t as binding around the ankle, so are more comfortable. I recently bought this sock (Classic Hike Full Cushion Crew) and the Smartwool Everyday Larimer Crew. I like the Everyday Larimer Crew a bit better.

The Classic Hike Full Cushion Crew is thicker and warmer but I don’t need the extra thickness for indoor wear, this is more of an outdoor sock. The Classic Hike Full Cushion Crew is 56% wool while the Larimer Crew is 84%.

I rated 4 star rather than 5 star as for my use the sock is a bit too thick and warm.

The material is waterproof yet breathable and the stretches means that it moves with you. Very quiet too unlike alot of waterproofs. Fit is perfect (mens Medium) and the new front visor/band stayed put in the rain/wind.

Only minor issue I had was the stretchy head tightening band at the back would bounce against the jacket making a noise with every footstep. Easily resolved by tucking in on itself to be back to quiet, peaceful runnng.

Love the new colours – went for the navy with orange. Having had my previous smock kamleika for over 6 years this is a great update and feels like it’ll last just as long. Highly recommended.

Bought as a gift which hasn’t been given yet, but looks ideal. Very lightweight and not silly bright in colour, but definitely enough to do the job.

Excellent jacket. The product was recommended by two of my running buddies, who both have the black version. They were very jealous of my red version ! Love the product, kept me dry and warm on a long wet, windy and cold run.

The gloves are really warm & fit perfectly. They can also be used with touchscreens. Love these gloves!

A well fitting Christmas gift for my sons, their wives and grandchildren. Everyone can use warm gloves when they live up north.

I had purchased a pair of these gloves previously and liked them so much I ordered two additional pairs in the event I lost a glove.

I wear this on it’s own for winter running- sleeves lovely and warm but body nicely ventilated so I don’t overheat on long runs. Looks good too!

Wow ! I run in wind/rain and winter weather. (25 mph winds/ sub zero/ black ice) so finding a running jacket that keep me warm and keep the wind out is hard to find. I have two other winter jackets that are black , they are great jackets too but BLACK for a runner ! I ordered this becuase of the color and reflective outer ! This is now my go to jacket ! It keeps the wind out completely and sometimes I am a little to warm but its easier to take of neck gaiters/ and hat ! If you run in nasty windy / icy / cold weather ! BUY this Jacket !!.

this jacket was just what i was looking for. it keeps me warm in the 20s with wind chills in the teens, but I’ve also worn it in the 30s and never overheat. I have a similarly priced jacket from Athleta that makes me sweat every time, no matter how cold.

the material used for this one is perfect and the patter is nice too. it fits true to size and looks good on. my one complaint is that the neck part is a bit stiff. its not a deal breaker (hence the 5 stars) but i would recommend NB to think about adding a fleece panel at the neck or some alternative design there.

This jacket looks so much better in person than in photos – a dull silver with a bright fluorescent yellow fleecey lining. I’ve worn it over nothing but a jog bra when running in 42F NYC weather – when you start running in it you think “this’ll never be warm enough” but somehow it is, and also you never get TOO warm.

It’s expensive but I’m glad I splurged on it to replace my 15 year old one. NOTE: if uncertain about sizing OR you want to fit a fleece under it, size up.

It’s such a weird design. The pockets are sewn backwards and it’s really small. My phone can’t even fit into it

I am so please with my new coat, it’s idea for running in this cold weather, as it’s not to bulky. I also like wearing it casually. It’s a great coat and I’m very happy.

Stylish light weight jacket, slightly on small size so had to go up a size. The returned one is still stuck somewhere in EU so still awaiting a refund!

I typically wear a women’s Medium size. The proportions of this shirt did not work for me. The sleeves were uncomfortably tight around the arms. The body and the neck were too loose to maintain body warmth on a cool day.

Too bad because I really loved the colour and needed to replace a couple of my warmer running layers.

I do like it a lot & will be keeping it, but I wanted to let others know the sleeves are about 2 1/2 inches too long on me, and I have long arms. Also, it fits more like a tunic, almost covering my butt.

Guess I could have seen that in the photos. Nice & soft. & very cozy. Neck zip is perfect, no irritation.

Love it. It actually keeps you warm after a long run! Fits well. Only thing missing are the running openings in the sleeves.

I received my Winter Run Vest for Christmas & I couldn’t be happier! All the features come together in a great package. Light weight, yet plenty warm. Snug, but not constricting. Functional venting allows it to breathe, so I don’t become “sweat sogged & chilled” (as with so many other vests).

The added bonus of reflective highlights really comes in handy with the short winter days here in NJ. I would recommend this vest to anyone from walkers, hikers, & joggers to serious runners (& I have).

I have used the vest for 4 runs – great for the 30 to 40 degree range. It is nice to not be sweating a lot when running with the wind and it’s more than adequate when running into the wind. It’s a good bridge between GoreTex and just a long sleeve t-shirt.

It runs true to size. The zipper pull tab is on the left side – European? Women’s? European women’s? It’s Ok – I’ve adjusted. CEP is a great company – I think I have 15 pairs of their high compression socks.

But unlike the socks, the vest does not require a YouTube video to put it on :-).

I love that these pants hold in the warmth. I have heard about this feature in interviews with trainers to professional athletes. Realizing how important this is for recovery after working out, I have bought many different athletic pants and tights that advertise this feature, but I have been disappointed, everytime.

These are the real deal. I love them!.

I bought these pants a month ago to get me through the cold fall morning runs and dog walks. These are perfect. They are very flattering and comfortable to wear every morning. I just bought a second pair!.

Seem comfy, baggy upper thigh compared to fitted lower, very short. I’m 5’8.5″, athletic slender with curves, 140 lbs, and they are mid-shin and don’t feel good at that length… returning

For the price, I would have expected better. I’ve been searching desperately for a jacket that was breathable and protective from the elements. I miss the old fitted Nike shield jackets that zipped up to the neck and had integrated stowaway mittens that fit nice and snug – this old jacket also had two types of outer layer fabrics, a shield layer almost through out, but a then a breathable layer in the underarms and a few other areas.

This new jacket is ok, it has the zippers on the underarms to try and create that breathability, but it’s design did not allow for me to catch wind of a breeze for moderate cool down. Another thing that is super flimsy I would say are the useless mittens.

I love integrated mittens on a jacket, but these mittens are so large they just fall off and don’t stay put. I could easily just grab my long sleeve over my hands but this mitten is quite laughable. If only they had made it a snug fit for each jacket.

For example, I ordered an XS and the mittens feel like they belong to a size large. What I did love is the look of the jacket and the hoodie because they included a slight cap like feel so you don’t get rain directly on your eyes, and you can easily tighten the fit of the hoodie.

They also included the face mask neck gater. I didn’t have any issues with it falling down or the fit. If you don’t like it you can easily remove it.

Upon receipt of this jacket, I was skeptical at how well it would handle truly cold weather. More than half of the jacket is unlined. The material is so thin, the white jacket is see through. But I wore this on a slower run on a day when wind chills were in the 20s.

It held up nicely with just a thermal layer underneath. The mittens worked well too. The only complaints are the gaiter – the amount of material makes it really tight – and the underarm vents – very hard to zip up while wearing the jacket.

Size wise, it fits true to size if you prefer more form fitting jackets. If you prefer baggy, size up.

I didn’t think that I could run on some of the coldest days in this jacket but it proved me wrong. Over the past few weeks I’ve been running in super cold and windy weather with layers and it is perfect.

Light and breathable but keeps heat well. I think it will also transition nicely into spring and fall.

So these do run small, I went up a size to what I normally buy in tights and they fit comfortably, getting them on at first was really tight but once up they fit like a glove. I am 5’7 and the length is perfect, hits exactly as a full length tight should, the high rise waist also comes just over my belly button which I love.

While these do feel warm I am yet to take them on cold trail. The material is thick and feels comfy, they feel like a soft shell jacket for your legs! I am happy they aren’t fleece lined, I want to wear them on high output hikes in cold weather and don’t want the fleece for that.

These are designed for active pursuits and not cozying up with a coffee in the snow. I would have liked to have seen more renforcement in the bottom but I can see without it, it does give much more flexibility.

If you are on the fence if you should try them, but they seem like the type of tight you are looking for, get them. I think the other reviews unfairly shamed these.

I ordered these and I’m actually in love and came to read the reviews. There are bad ones but I don’t get why. It’s e very form flattering fit and fits like a glove. I wear xs/s and ordered S and fits perfectly.

The darker part on the back has fuzzy inside. I was thinking if it’s made for downhill skiing (so your bum won’t get cold on the chair) not sure haven’t tried yet but seems like it would work perfectly.

And honestly I would wear it anywhere it’s very cute.

This has been a great addition to my outdoor running apparel collection. It’s a bit on the pricey side. However, it’s very packable, water repelling qualities are good and the built-in cap in the hood is a nice touch.

It is incredibly lightweight as well. The jacket is not as bright orange as the online pictures suggest. Still a nice jacket overall. The jacket runs a bit big compared to what I’m used to. I guess it’ll make layering up in the winter a bit easier then.

This jacket is fantastic. It fits like a glove the cut is amazing. The quality of materials is clearly superior. And despite it being super thing and light it actually does keep warm. If there was not that issue with the zipper.

I agree it would be great to have the little button so you can keep it open and just fasten both sides so you don‘t go flapping about like batman. But the issue I have – presumably a production issue – is that the inside of the zipper is so rough and the jacket being cut rather close to the body, it roughs up and basically damages my t-shirts.

All t-shirts I have worn underneath this jacket so far all have a roughed up frizzy line running right across the middle where the on jacket zipper chafed against the tissue. On has without a doubt Apple status – fabulous designs paired with fabulous quality, but this one is a bit of a let-down.

Loved how this jacket looked on website, decided to purchase gray and white combo; I live in the PacNW and am always looking for good wet weather running gear. When the jacket arrived, I was disappointed in numerous ways.

First, the material is sheer and the images onsite are misleading (the material appears to be opaque). Second, I ordered my usual size S (I am 5’6″, 117lbs) and the fit was odd–body was too loose (making the silhouette unflattering) and the length was too long (I have a normal, athletic build and do not have a short torso).

Third, the hood was really heavy and when the jacket was completely zippered and the hood was not in use, the weight caused the collar to press against my neck in an uncomfortable way. Lastly, the collar/neck was stiff and the edge often suck into my chin when the jacket was zippered as pictured on the Backcountry site.

I could not convince myself that this jacket would be comfortable on a 5 mile run and for the price, this jacket needed to be perfect. Returned it to Backcountry with no regrets.

Very odd fit. Bodice is tight, especially in waist area. Shoulders have excess material that does not lay flat. And arms are extremely long(went several inches past my finger tips. The construction and material is nice.

The arms don’t seem like they would be as warm because there is a strip of nylon on inner portion that felt breezy even in the store. For the price point, I had higher expectations for this jacket.

I was quite lucky to get this in the sale for £33 which was an absolute bargain. However I would have been so disappointed with the product had I had to pay full price. The jacket is actually quite thin, I assumed “therma” would mean it was a lot warmer.

The sizing seems to be off too! I am always a size medium in Nike but had to get a large.

I bought it while traveling because it was colder than I expected and I needed to get in an 8 mile run. I didn’t have a ton of options to choose from so could easily have wound up with something I would never wear again.

Instead this has become my go-to item. It fits beautifully. And it is the perfect weight for my winter runs in NC.

I was deciding between this and the Down for It All running jacket. The Down For it All (DFIA) seemed a little lighter and had slightly more mobility in the arms when I tried them both on for comparison, but I ultimately chose the Another Mile Jacket.

This jacket was warmer than the DFIA, it has an inner vest layer with a hood that can detach for warmer days. I am someone who hates being cold, I’d much rather sweat a ton than be cold. If it’s 50 degrees out, you’ll probably seem running in pants and warm top while someone else might in shorts and a t-shirt.

That said, I LOVE this jacket. I’ve run in it in the windy cold DC winters of temps in the low 30s and I’m warm and sweaty by the end of mile 1. If you’re always cold, live in a colder climate, but want to run outdoors in the winter, this jacket will motivate you to get out there! I wouldn’t be running outdoors in the winter without this jacket.

I’ve already washed it a few times and it comes out of the drier like new. The lack of feathers (I’m vegan) and easy washing instructions is another reason I chose this over the DFIA (which requires a tennis ball in the drier due to it having down feather).

I was so disappointed by this jacket. It says it is built for running, but I would say that isn’t accurate at all- it would probably be fine for running errands or walking to and from the grocery store, but not for athletic pursuits.

Main cons: – The hood of the jacket is HUGE. I have a big head, but the fact that it is so big and doesn’t have any sort of drawstring or method of tightening it (major miss on something that is supposed to be for running), makes it pretty much useless.

– The hood is connected to the inner dickie, so it can’t be removed without removing that extra layer of warmth, which is a bit of a bummer. – There is no drawstring at the bottom, so in windy weather, wind can easily get up the bottom of the jacket and chill you.

Again, major miss on something that’s supposed to be for running. – The way the collar is designed, it will not sit flat while running, which resulted in the zipper constantly rubbing my face (I adjusted it many times on a short 5K run).

The only way to wear this jacket functionally seems to be with it zipped to the top. – It is very warm, but NOT breathable. After short runs, it was basically waterlogged with my sweat, and super heavy.

I contacted customer support, they were able to issue me a gift card, which I appreciated, but I really would have liked to get my money back due to the poor performance. I will avoid purchasing “running” jackets from lululemon in the future.

Love it! Lightweight yet toasty. I got the white, which is perfect for visibility during dusky neighborhood walks in 35-50(f) temps. I usually just wear a long sleeve shirt under it, but have successfully paired it with Nulu hooded define & the regular define for extra under layers (not both at the same time).

Sizing: I have the 14 since I like coats. a bit roomy. Yet The cut is still slimming & flattering. My lulu shirt size is 10 (rulu run, swiftly loose, etc). My niece got the 12 – she’s a 6 in shirts but wanted options to wear bulkier tops (eg sweatshirts) under the coat.

Very comfortable to wear and good quality.

These pants fit true to size. I live in Texas so our winters don’t get too cold but we do have cool mornings and windy days. Wore these out for a 10-miler this weekend with temps in the lower 40s and winds around 15mph with gusts higher.

My legs were comfortable the whole time. The knees on these pants are articulated with a little mesh behind it. I wasn’t sure about that design feature but after getting the pants on I didn’t notice it at all and didn’t feel my knees were cold while running.

Will definitely be using these pants through the cooler weather.

I’ve never been a fan of wearing running tights. The waist is too restrictive for me. These have been a great alternative. If you get past the sticker shock, these are well made and very comfortable running pants.

Have run up to about -10 C so far and they have been warm enough on their own. Just wish there was maybe one additional small pocket for keys (there is one zipper big enough for your phone and one standard pants pocket).

These are very comfortable running pants with useful features (ventilation, wind blockage, articulation, functional pockets for on-trail necessities). I wouldn’t exactly call them cold weather pants, as On describes them, but they’re okay for cool weather.

They are pricey, but if you can pick them up at a discount, worth the investment for their functionality and versatility.

Don?t normally write reviews but these deserve it. Bought my first pair in 2019 and they have been my go-to?s since. One of the first times I wore them was for a 16 hour alpine scramble/trail run and they were comfortable the whole time, always staying in place so no awkward thigh rubbing.

They started fraying a bit immediately, which is a bummer, but I?ve probably worn them over 800 times since it started and they?re still in one piece (a few holes at this point but I refuse to retire them).

They?d be warm for summer activities but if you spend a lot of time in the alpine they?re good for year-round use. Great for ski touring and don?t stink if you wear them for multiple days in a row. Just bought my second pair.

I?m a touch over 5?9? and athletic and the large fits well although I could probably squeeze into a medium.

I originally bought these for a trip to the Tetons and they did not disappoint. They’ve since endured many, many long days in the alpine without sagging or stretching even after miles of climbing and running.

They’re a bit warm for summer, but can be worn year-round. I wear them for all my big days in the mountains, to the gym, and as a baselayer in the winter. The only complaint is that they started fraying pretty much immediately.

The seams are coming apart now, the bottom fold of fabric has come unglued, and they have pilled. The longevity is quite disappointing being as I’ve only had them a year, but I love them anyway.

I like these tights! They are very tight and don’t fall down at all when I run. I also like the zippered pocket on the waistband. I’m 5’3″ and the length is PERFECT! They hit right at my ankles. The things I don’t like about these tights are that they could use a little extra fleece on the upper front thigh (my quads get very cold while the rest of my legs are warm) and side pockets for kleenex, phone, snacks, etc.

The legging is very comfortable and ideal for training in cold weather. I really appreciate the high quality fabric. And the reflecting details make running so much safer. All my Odlo products last for years and I’m sure this one will too!.
