So, I bought a couple of these a few years ago, as I was preparing to paint a car, and wasn’t sure how to deal with the oil/water in the lines. I picked up a couple of these, as well as one of those red plastic “bulb-like” filters to see if that would do the trick.
Long story short, I trust these more than I trust the bulbs as you can actually see moisture accumulating. Being that the red bulbs are disposable and non-see through, I figured I’d keep my faith in this.
Here’s a trick or two to make these things work. FIRST of all – hanging one of these off your air compressor, or even NEAR your air compressor is going to be completely pointless, and I basically proved as much in my trial and errors.
Water takes time to cool and expand enough to release water. In fact, it takes at least 25ft of travel distance (inside a hose) to cool enough to allow a water extractor to work. When I initially had this directly attached to my compressor, I was wondering why it wasn’t collecting any water, and that was why.
So, what I did was put it on pigtail piece of 2-3ft hosing which I use to connect to my main air hose (at the end of a 50ft length of hose), and then use a quick connect on that length of hose to connect to my air tool.
That way, I can keep it physically separated from my main hose (in case anything happens to that hose), but can use it with any air tool in my shop. Anyway, long story short, make sure your compressor has at least 25ft of hose in between the compressor and this fitting, regardless of where you decide to put it.

I called the distributor to find out how much it would cost me to buy a replacement and I was told that the regulator with the filter would be $54 and $28 for the pressure gauge.
Too expensive, I thought. Well, I went on line and found this regulator which, together with the gauge, was a lot less costly and, just the right length. I have it installed now and, it works as well as the original.

Great little unit. But it only has one side to install a air gage on. So you can only install it one way without doing alot of plumbing. But it dose work good.
