These shoes fit perfectly and were comfortable from the first use. After several hundred miles of hill hikes (mostly on asphalt), several soaks in hot water and laundry detergent soaks in white vinegar and hot water (to get a chemical out after my apartment was contaminated), and many days left out in the sun, they don’t look brand new as they don’t have that new product glisten, BUT they are in nearly new condition in terms of functionality and the fact there I can see now degradation of the straps and hardly any wear on the soles.
So, to give more detail about why I love these sandals, I’m a lifelong hiker with long skinny feet. I hike fast and usually don’t carry much as I’m thinking for exercise and pleasure starting outside my house.
I hike on asphalt mostly. I have hiked partly on dirt and dirt with rocks, but I prefer to wear closed toe shoes on that type of surface as I don’t like getting dirt and rocks under my bare feet and having them grind between my feet and the shoe.
These are snug enough that that’s not a huge problem for short distances if I pay attention to what I’m doing, but I mostly wear these on country asphalt roads, not soft dirt or turf and not on sharp rocks.
Also, I have long, narrow feet with very narrow heels. Although I can wear 1/2 size shorter in medium width sandals due to the toes and heels being open for extra length, sandals are usually slightly loose on my when I do that.
So, I didn’t know how these would work out for my style of hiking–FAST, and sometimes SWEATY. They are fabulous. The elastic straps in the color black hold my feet security to the base. The base fits my foot perfectly, meaning there is enough length but not too much.
Also, I have a Morton’s neuroma on one foot. It is not always obvious, but it can be painful when I have more inflammation or my foot has been squeezed in tight socks or shoes. So, I was worried about these sandals either being loose due to my narrow foot or being tight due to the elastic.
For me, a 9. 5 AA size wearing a 9B sandal, the degree of smugness is perfect. It keeps my foot securely held against the base without any excess snugness. My foot is slightly more narrow than a typical B (and half a size longer).
I saw on one of the reviews that someone else with 9. 5 AA feet fit the 9B well. But, others who normally wear 9B fit it too. So, make your own judgment. Also, and this was a big deal, as an older person with no visible fat on my feet and the thinning skin that older people can get, I was finding that anything that rubbed made holes in my skin.
So, I had serious doubts about hiking in sandals, particularly since I couldn’t feel the straps in advance and didn’t know if there were hidden rough spots. I’m thrilled to say that I have NEVER had any rubbing issues with these sandals, even on the first use when I went a few miles (but carried hardcore padded large bandages just in case).
The straps are very gentle on your skin. Also, I’d been wearing heavily padded socks and shoes due to less fat on the bottom of my feet due to getting older and having a skinny foot to start with (and being slender anyway).
Add to that a Morton’s neuroma that sometimes flared up. I was surprised that I had ZERO problems with the firm sole. It’s not hard. It’s firm, and it’s very comfortable for me. Now, during the time I’ve used these for several hundred miles of hilly road hiking, my weight has ranged from slightly underweight even for my narrow but slightly tall frame to overweight for my narrow frame but not overweight on the doctor’s chart.
So, a heavier person who generally needs padding or a person carrying heavy backpacks, groceries or children might have to test these for themselves. For me, they’ve been perfect. Let’s just say that the sole is firmer than the soles of my high quality running shoes so the soles on these sandals do not show wear like running shoes do on the bottom of the soles.
Keep in mind that because these have straps around the big toes, you can only wear toe socks with them, not regular socks. Also, I tried that and took the toe socks off because 1) my feet slipped on the base due to inadequate friction as your skin has more friction than socks typically do 2), the socks made the sandals snugger, and I don’t like things to be snugger than they need to be for practical reasons.
I don’t have much fat on my feet so it would squeeze my skin between straps and bone. I actually think they would be less safe when wearing socks due to the slipping, especially if you tuck the toe straps under your feet and don’t wear them.
You really need the soles of your feet right up against the base with no sock in between. I bought the black as my wardrobe is based on black, medium-dark grey, and coordinating jewel tones and rich pastels.
While I could see wearing the beige or light grey with summer skirts or dresses for a casual look, I think the black looks fine with them and stays nicer looking due to this area out in the country getting everything dirty due to lack of moisture and lots of loose dust.
I don’t wear blue as it doesn’t look great on me, especially with my black streaks naturally in my natural silver hair. So, one pair of black Siennas are my go to sandals. I have leather sandals that are dressier, but I rarely need to be dressy and I hate to dress in ways where I couldn’t walk a few miles if I had to.
I would love if these came in a black sole with the soft narrow straps in raspberry, burgundy, deep turquoise, or vivid purple (dark or medium). Although these would be pretty in colored soles, back soles look better longer, I and I really put the miles on mine.
The only reason I’ll be buying another pair of hiking sandals anytime soon is if I decide to get a new pair of these so that I have a perfectly clean pair on hand to wear socially. As it is, here in SoCal, people are really casual in most situations anyway, especially in the rural but still heavily populated town I’m in, and a quick wipe of the sole is all I really need to freshen these up when dusty, and I rarely even do that.
Now, to be clear, the way I cleaned these in hot water and set them in the sun for days is not necessarily the best way to clean them. I probably made them look older by doing that and I don’t know how good it was for the materials.
But, I didn’t see any change other than the luster being slightly duller and tiny detail on the sole being revealed after it was probably touched up in the factory with a black marker of some kind, but it’s completely unnoticeable when worn.
They still look great. Don’t take my cleaning methods as being appropriate and don’t leave them for days in the sun. That’s generally going to degrade anything you do that to. I will say that the cheaper sandals we had at the time warped in the sun while these held up perfectly, but still, take care of these and I think they will last you a long time.
Very comfortable too, easy to put on and take off, and nice looking. As for fit, though my feet are very thin, there is an adjustment at the back of the heel strap if you need more room. I probably snugged it up when I first got these 8 months ago.
