20 Best Travel Carrier For Cats (2023 Updated)

Bought two of these for travel on a small airplane (ERJ-145). First the bad: These arrived smelling like a fire at a chemical dump. Seriously, this is a smell that makes your nose hairs want to curl up and die.

It gave me a headache when I was in a closed room with them overnight. The smell was very strong and filled the room. After that I put them in the garage to de-gas and after three days the smell no longer filled the room but was offensive within 5-6 feet.

It has now been nearly a month, with them alternately hanging in an empty closet and sitting outside, and the smell is almost but not fully gone. Still noticeable within a few inches though, which means the cats can definitely smell it.

Now the good: The construction is solid, and the fabric is water resistant which makes it very easy to clean. The zipper slides smoothly, and goes all the way around both ends and the bottom of one side, which means the carrier can be completely opened up to lay flat.

There is also a hook inside to clip a harness or leash to. There is less mesh than in other carriers (one end plus a u-shape on both sides), which was perfect for airplane travel with cats since it gave them a spot they could curl up and feel a little more secure.

Other reviews complained about the velcro on the bottom sticking to the airplane carpet. Yup, confirmed, it’s annoying but workable. A scrap piece of some grippy fabric stuck to it in advance would get rid of the issue.

I really wish I could recommend this carrier. It’s exactly what we needed and pretty much perfect except for that terrible smell.

Not sure I would recommend this carrier. Are two zippers with which can open either end, but not at same time. also, one end is solid with no viewing, so need to be careful which way load animal. Doing so would leave the long side unattached.

Not sure how easy breakdown will be either. I would think this item was meant to be left compact. I do not plan on using shoulder strap, so that is a non selling point for me.

I’ve been working to get my cat used to this carrier for about 2 weeks. It is honestly a bit of a snug fit for him even though he’s a small tom cat at about 8 pounds. He will go inside for treats and I haven’t tried to force him in or zip him in yet.

I wish both ends zipped open so I didn’t feel like I’ll need to put him in it butt first. He could turn around in it, but it will be a tight turn. The shoulder strap feels like the right length and is comfortable and adjustable.

It is very good quality. I love that it is airline approved. With Covid I’m not sure when ‘we’ will test drive it on an airplane, but soon I’ll get him in it and see how he does.

This is very sturdy and doesnt sag in the bottom when my cat is in it. Its easy to put together. Its the perfect size for a small dog and cat.

My cat has loved this. He thinks its a toy. He gets in and out by himself. It is very roomy foe him

My Siamese loves it however she is an escape artist and is able to unzip it from the inside with a luggage lock on it.

This is seriously the best cat carrier I’ve ever bought. I have a big 17 lb cat that fits perfectly inside. He loves going in it even when we’re not taking him somewhere. The take down time and pull out time is maybe one minute.

It’s low profile even when fully deployed, doesn’t feel like those big clunky boxy ones you can usually get in the store. Those are fine for dogs, but they just feel too big for cats. Just make sure when deploying it though that the sides latch together properly.

Wasn’t paying attention once and had the overlapping parts in the wrong order. The vet even loved it. The only reason I even thought to write this review is because I came looking to buy a second one for our other cat, but now I can’t find the smaller ones.

I’ll snatch one up in a minute if I find it though. These are great.

I bought two of these XL carriers for my 3 cats two months before our move from California to Nebraska. I set them out for them to get familiar with. My 12 year old cat (10 lbs) loved sleeping in it daily so was easy for her traveling in.

The two kittens 8 months old (both around 8 1/2 lbs) played around it but traveled well together in one. Both fit side by side in my backseat of my RAV4 and I used seatbelt to buckle them in. I ordered a third one now that we arrived in Nebraska because they all sleep in them.

It’s a safe place as they transition. Highly recommend these carriers sturdy and easy to assemble and fold up. And take the door off so cats can enjoy at home as a sleeping spot. Just remember to keep all the pieces.

I first bought a soft carrier for my kitten, thinking it would be less frightening for him. He almost tore it apart trying to get out of it. NOT the fault of the carrier, but he also rapidly outgrew it.

When I saw the generous size of the SportPet carrier, AND the fact that it only weighs 6 pounds, I thought I’d give it a try. He doesn’t appear to feel as confined. I set it in the living room, dropped the large hatch opening, and laid a blanket inside.

I frequently find him in there curled up taking a nap. It truly is large enough to easily accommodate two average sized adult cats.

Bought this in hopes that it would give my ragdoll more room than a standard carrier. She definitely has more room! It’s well constructed and very similar to a baby carrier. You put the tube pieces together and latch them down using your seatbelt just like an infant seat.

You snap the carrier onto the “base” using the large square looking clips (one on each side) you can see in the picture. Handle on the black version has a brown leather like wrap. Buttons are easy to push and work well.

The hood is completely collapsible by simply releasing one of the buttons on each end. On its own it is not very heavy. Comparable to a standard plastic carrier. Feels like carrying a chunky baby when you put the ragdoll in there.

Oof.

I got this because I thought the cave like area this carrier had would be good for helping my scardy cat adjust to being crated. My scardy boy absolutely refuses to get into crates, and he’s very wiggly so I have trouble getting him into them.

When I know I have to crate him I’ll set this crate out and leave it open for the cats to investigate and sleep in. They like how big and cave like it is so they often sleep in it. Although I still struggle with him, I can get my scardy boy in this crate and it works out because I can put his siblings in there with him so he doesn’t freak out so much when we travel.

Down sides of this crate are that it doesn’t have a firm bottom so the cats can “sink” and that the zipper isn’t as sturdy as I would like. The first time i used this crate my big boy popped the zipper open and both he and my scardy cat got out.

I do still use this, but I closely monitor my cats. I don’t think I would buy again just because I have learned that I need a sturdier crate.

I have a very smart cat who insists on getting on the table when I’m trying to eat dinner. He can also open doors (and turn on water) so shutting him in another room is not an option when he gets up for the second or third time.

I bought this for that reason. All three cats have been in and out of it when it’s set up. I’ve only had to shut Kulli in it once because they have fun playing in it when I open it up before dinner time.

As reviewers noted, it doesn’t stand up straight as in the picture. They easily tip it when playing in it. It has also been knocked flat by the smallest one jumping on it. Not to worry though–no damage done.

Kulli has also clawed at the screen windows and done no damage. It seems very sturdy. This cage would have been great when we were moving across several states and worried about the cats being in their small carriers while driving or in a motel room.

I am so grateful I made this purchase!! We had a long-distance move from OH to TN with 3 cats. Ordinarily, traveling with them is painful, to say the least. My black & white kitty (age 15) usually gets car sick within 20-25 minutes and it comes out both ends if the ride is any longer.

But I purchased this large, soft-sided, easy cleaning, large visibility carrier in hopes things would improve for transporting our cats 9 hours!! Our cats did phenomenally on the long trip to TN!! My husband had 1 of them and I had the 2 in my new carrier.

No one got sick and next to no whining! I believe the difference is that they could share the space together, could see me easily, didn’t feel so enclosed and I could easily reach my had in a small unzipped space, to pet them along the ride.

I can’t say enough about this easy-to-assemble, soft-sided carrier!.

Having left #1 at another location and now needing to fly to that location, we now own two! It’s a better option for a wiggly heavy cat than a bag if you’re flying. It does take up all available under-seat space and kitty will change where he sits lays from on back to laying under seat.

My guy seems to love it! And having used a gym bag style with previous cats (female) who were smaller and less rambunctious than this guy, I’m very pleased to have him on my back with good straps and front strap too for stability vs.

Very happy with my purchase. Big enough for either one of my cats (the larger of which is a 10 lb male) with room to spare. I haven’t been great on my adventure/leash cat training but this also makes a nice travel carrier- much more comfortable to carry than the handle kind when walking longer distances.

I’ve also used it in the car. Both cats like being inside and will sometimes go in just for fun when I’m not taking them anyplace. A little bulky as a backpack but understandably so considering the size animals it can fit.

I’m glad I went with this one rather than the smaller version.

I bought this to take my 10 pound cat, Annie, outside this summer. I like that it has a short leash sewn inside to keep the pet secure, as well as buckles on all the zippers. It seems pretty difficult for a pet to escape from this carrier! I also like the buckles in the front for the person wearing the backpack.

It’s a great size for Annie too. The only real complaint I have is that inside the bottom liner, it’s just a piece of cardboard. I wish it was something a little sturdier. Overall though I’m pretty happy with this purchase and am looking forward to taking Annie outside more!.

I am honestly in disbelief that this carrier has so many glowing reviews. I can’t help but wonder how “objective” they are. Let’s start with the fact that the panels are folded into a square shape to fit inside the oval top/bottom.

So things are literally bent out of shape when they arrive. Then the task of first separating the top from the bottom is iffy. You have to use force but not so much force that you break the zipper. From there on out, aligning the pieces of fabric with the zipper track in just the right way requires a minimum of 3 hands to be done without a lot of frustration.

I hope this isn’t sold as a collapsible carrier because I would be afraid to disassemble if I even had to reassemble it again. The instruction sheet is all but useless; was clearly translated from another language and it did not translate well.

I must ask why the zippers. This is clearly not meant to be repeatedly taken apart and re-assembled, so does it just save a few bucks on shipping? As soon as I am able, I am going to a physical store and buying a traditional plastic carrier.

This novelty stuff is for the birds.

I was thrilled to find this carrier as I had one like it a few years ago. The other one was brown and for some reason it never occurred to me that it was collapsible. I purchased it at a pet store already assembled and used it for years until my female cat had an “accident” in it.

I could not get it clean so had to throw it out. Imagine my surprise when I found this replacement. So I very carefully put it together – the reviews that talked about it coming apart scared me. Within 5 minutes my male cat had found the carrier and claimed it.

He slept in it the very first night. I used the new carrier to take him to the vet. I was very careful and scared after reading the reviews of cats escaping, but we had no problems. After he came home and was over the traumatic experience, my little guy went back into the carrier.

It’s been a bit over a week now and he generally is sleeping in the carrier most of the time. It helps when I am putting him in a carrier that I know he feels comfortable in.

The ONLY reason I returned it is because of something that isn鈥檛 its fault: the carrier is so roomy with big mesh panels, my dog kept trying to push his way through the mesh and it started to rub his nose in a way that I could foresee as problematic, even for a trip to the vet down the street.

Unlike another reviewer who used this carrier to travel cross country, our trip to the vet is literally down the street, so my dog didn鈥檛 have time to run his nose raw like the dog going cross country, but I didn鈥檛 want to chance it and I didn鈥檛 want to have to deal with the awkwardness of draping things over the carrier to deter my dog from pushing against it.

Ok TL:DREXCELLENT carrier for the price, 10/10 would recommend for short trips. May not be suitable for environments where structural integrity is pivotal for the dog鈥檚 safety while traveling. Very roomy and ventilated.

I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase. I had a few different soft carriers in my shopping list but after reviewing went with Wal-Mart鈥檚 Best Seller Henkelion dog Carrier. My requirements were pretty simple.

I just needed something big enough for my dog (she is a medium size short hair tortie but she鈥檚 got some extra pounds on her) and to use for when we move apartments and she goes to the vet. So sick of my big clunky old school plastic dog carrier.

Takes up so much space! I went with the 鈥渓arge鈥?size after taking her measurements. I wanted her to have a little extra moving room. Love the top zipper opening so I can just plop her right in. We鈥檙e not going anywhere right now but she fit perfect and didn鈥檛 really freak out at all.

I could instantly tell she liked being able to look up and see through the mesh. Once everything is zippered up, it becomes very sturdy. The removable Sherpa padding just plops right in, there鈥檚 nothing that clips onto it to keep it in place but you don鈥檛 really need it once your dog is sitting on top of it.

When you鈥檙e done with it, just break it down and store it away. Money well spent! Would recommend for small dogs too.

I got this to make trips to the vet easier and it definitely has been great! We just got Charlie and he is a bit nervous with things at first so I just let him get used to it for a couple of days before trying to put him inside.

He seemed to like playing around it and even in it almost right away, I was amazed! I had a plan to introduce it slowly and while it worked very well the first few days, something came up where we had to get him to the vet in a hurry, so I had to rush it.

However, while the car ride was a bit traumatic to him, I think the carrier provided a sense of security. I kept it in my lap and opened it enough to reach my hand in and pet him. Overall it was a success.

When we got home and he calmed down, he was back to playing in it, I was so glad he didn’t hate it after that. I really love how easy it is to carry and the multiple options for carrying, and I (and Charlie) also love the multiple different openings.

It makes a fun game for him. I would definitely recommend!.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever purchased for my two travel averse girl cats. It is worth every penny! They absolutely love this carrier!! We call it the Royal Carrier. 🙂 As soon as I presented it to them, they crawled inside and instantly started making muffins on the really soft plushy pillow.

We keep it out at all times and they sleep in it together throughout the day. We took our oldest to the vet last week and while she was still not super thrilled to travel, she was so much calmer because she was able to see really well through the large mesh sides and I could easily unzip a panel to pet her.

It is a large carrier, but it is really worth it because I often take both of my girls for their annual exams together and they can easily ride in it together with plenty of room. If we ever wanted to store it, it does fold up flat.

But I think there would be mutiny if we put it away! Definitely would recommend this carrier to anyone looking for an upgrade.

Bought this for my cat who isn’t a fan of confinement. The open sides allow her to look around more and feel the breeze (which she always loves sniffing). She would occasionally push against the door of the traditional plastic carrier, but hasn’t tried to push out of this one.

She’s 16 and we go to the vet more often now so it’s great to have a carrier she feels more comfortable in. It’s definitely sturdy, has clips to secure the zippers if you have a pet who tries to wiggle out, and accurate measurements (I got the smaller of the 2 options, but if you have a larger cat, get the bigger size!) Easy to wipe down the inside and wash the cushion, which is very soft.

My younger cat also napped in it the first day I put it out. If you have a cat who loves the outdoors but hates harnesses, and live in a place with nice scenery and lots of sidewalks, it would def be worth getting the stroller type wheels for this carrier too.

Cool way to safely experience the outdoors if you aren’t into the backpacks.

Got this big red PetLuv carrier for my 12 pound cat, who hated the old plastic carrier. She took to it right away, and likes to nap inside of it. Took her to the vet for the first time in the carrier, and she didn’t protest when I put her inside.

It’s a beautiful cat carrier with a very plushy matching pillow pad that is washable. The sides zip securely and can be locked. Privacy panels roll down. 3 sides zip open and the top too. This carrier is over 8 lbs empty.

It’s a good idea to roll it on a flat dolly if you don’t enjoy lifting 22 lbs. This is a very well made carrier, quite attractive. Nice and big if you have a big cat. I love it and so does my cat.

For the price, this is a great value. Both of my chihuahuas fit in it comfortably. The sides stay up when all the doors are closed. Has a great amount of options to open up to get my dogs out. I can pretty much get them out from every single side and the top, I love that! I also like all the mesh areas that allow them to see out, as well as for me to see in.

But the BEST part of all, is the luggage strap thingy on the side! It allows me to slide it right over my luggage handle, which makes it so easy to carry right on my rolling luggage. When I was searching for a carrier, I don’t think I saw any other carrier with that feature, which is exactly why I ordered this one.

It also fits perfectly under the seat on the airplane, so size is great. If there was anything at all that I might recommend improving, it’s the floor of the carrier. It’s furry and all, but just wish it had the tiniest bid of padding on the top side for my fur babies.

When traveling with a pet, whether a long trip or to the vet, the primary purpose of a pet carrier is to keep your companion comfortable. Included in comfortable is safe. This pet carrier does both those things and looks good doing it.

The mesh netting on the sides and top is strong. The zippers are also hefty and great quality. If I had to choose one thing where there could be improvement, it would be to make the clips for the should carrier strap – metal.

The are made with a sturdy plastic, which will more than carry the weight stated in the Wal-Mart ad.

I’ve now had this backpack in my house for two weeks. It STILL has a very strong chemical smell to it (from the foam in the bottom maybe?). The design is nice and sturdy; the frame doesn’t collapse like other brands I’ve read about.

I have no problem with the straps or the way the pack sits on my back, even when weighted – and I’m a *ahem* very well-endowed woman. Here’s what I would change: the top mesh piece hangs down into the carrier when unzipped, but should be able to velcro flat to the back wall of the carrier so that the fuzzy passenger can peep out the top easily (there is a leash-like strap anchored inside, so that fuzzy passenger won’t leap out).

Also, while I like the tear-resistant mesh, it makes it tough for fuzzy passenger to see the big beautiful world out there, hence my desire for her to be able to peep out the top. I don’t think I’d use the carrier without the front mesh zippered closed (see picture) because I don’t think my fuzzy passenger would feel safe being that exposed and much more likely to fall or jump out – even with the aforementioned leash.

She does like to play in the carrier in the comfort of the living room while the “front door” of the carrier is open and rolled up. Overall, if you can afford to spend more money on a carrier with one of those clear, window-bubbles in the front, do that.

If not, this is a good, less expensive alternative.

this carrier is amazing! I ended up using it to drive cross country with my cat and she loved it! she’s pretty petite so she had enough space to stand up and stretch but spent most of the time just curled up sleeping.

the mesh is pretty thick so it was hard to see her through it, usually I would just unzip it a little to peek at her, but I think that’s part of why she liked it so much – it’s pretty dark in there all zipped up which probably made her feel safe, but the multiple mesh openings let her see around her easily.

as a backpack it is fantastic, the buckles on the front made it super stable and not shaky while I walked around and also took some of the weight off my shoulders and made it more comfortable for me to carry.

I love that it has multiple openings too, I usually pick my cat up and put her in through the top and then let her venture out on her own through the front which seems to work well. it was definitely worth the money, it’s super sturdy and well made and my cat loves it, I leave it out in my room and sometimes she naps in it like it’s a covered bed! definitely recommend if you’re on the hunt for a good backpack carrier.

Got this for a rescue cat who is at least 10 years old and only weighs a little over 3 lbs. She obviously belonged in a home at one time and is so affectionate. She loves to be held. But like most people I have lots to do around the house and can’t sit around holding her all the time.

Being she has lost so much muscle mass, she needs something that conforms to her without putting pressure on her body. This is the perfect carrier for her. It’s like a mobile hammock. She can still snuggle next to me as I work about the house.

Don’t let her weight deter you. This carrier is definitely suitable for larger cats and small dogs. She is in recovery from being on the streets for such a long time and this is a Godsend. Wish I had one when my other cat had a broken leg and jaw.

I really like the construction of this sling. The only issue is that I am 54 and the sling is not adjustable so it lays around my hip I would really like it to be up over my waist so that I support her with my arms a bit but still have some support from the shoulder strap.

It would be better for me if it was adjustable.

I was so excited to get this for my cats I just couldn’t wait to have them try it out as soon as I got it. However the assembly time took so incredibly long, I was quite frustrated trying to switch out the bubble window.

There is a ring around the “window” hole that you have to unscrew to place the bubble window and then you secure it back in place with that ring. No matter what I did I could not screw that ring back in place properly.

It always screwed on lopsided which meant the bubble was not secure. I had two other people try it and they also had trouble. The base for the backpack is also not sturdy enough. It feels a little flimsy and doesn’t provide enough support for my 10 lb cat to sit inside comfortably.

The zippers also got caught every once in a while and didn’t zip smoothly. Overall, nice concept but it needs some work.

I purchased a carrier to take a feral cat that had adopted us to be spayed. I already had a collapsible canvas carrier but my house cat does not have claws so I was concerned that this cat with claws would tear through the fabric.

Plus my house cat the smarty she is knows how to unzip from the inside, so we have to used a paper clip clip to hold the zippers in place. I came across this one it’s a hard plastic, apparently better quality than the several I saw at the vets, those cats had chewed or clawed larger holes from the vents.

This one checked all the boxes. It was well thought out. It opens both from the top so that the vet was able to lay her gently in there, it also opens from the front. Which is plexi glass giving her a less claustrophobic feeling and me easy viewing.

A great easy open latch for me, but because of its placement in the solid part of plexiglass she can not get her paw out to open it. It has separate water and food bowls, which can be pulled out through a little fold down hatch, so you don’t have to open the cage to feed and water.

A bar between prevents the cat from getting out that way. Besides a handle it has an over the should strap which for someone who walks with a cane it a god send, there is enough length so I can put across my body.

It does break down into a lower footprint. The only thing that would make this complete is a drawstring bag to keep the 4 components together. Great carrier, great price. Worth it!.

I’ve had the Cabrio cat kennel for many years (10+) and it’s held up well. I was surprised to see so many negative reviews. It does take a little time to get it put together, but once all the pieces are in properly it is a solid good quality carrier.

If pieces are falling off it it may not have been put together correctly. Of course, the quality may have gone down since I originally purchased it. I like that it has a no skid bottom inside and lots of ventilation.

I put a puppy pad inside and cover that with a towel or blanket for my cat. It isn’t lightweight and might be a problem for some people carrying it. I’ve never had the front door pop off or any other issues with this carrier.

It is large and can be unwieldly to carry when a cat is inside it. I and my cats are happy with this sturdy long lasting carrier.

We were so excited to get this carrier! We had decided that we’d work on getting some new carriers to transport our cats to and from vet appointments. The cheap ones weren’t very sturdy and were falling apart so we opted to try one that was more expensive.

Unfortunately more expensive doesn’t mean better quality in this case. The assembly was simple, but the “cabrio” feature can hardly be used properly. The two sides will not join together without a log of struggle, and one of the kittens got her paw stuck in there while I was trying to get it closed for a trial run.

It took far too long to get it secured, and even then it didn’t feel sturdy. I’m afraid to use it to take any of our fosters anywhere. We typically LOVE Catit products. This one just didn’t work well at all.

It needed a little practice to erect, but once in place I was most impressed. This product is excellent value for money, and cost a fraction of equivalent products on the market. When not in use the Pawhut folds away neatly in its own strong carrier.

I notice the price is creeping up, so if you are considering buying one do so NOW.

This is excellent value for money, easy set up, with 3 use options, 1 double, or 2 singles or 1 single. It also includes good quality base beds and 2 detachable cradles.

It may not be quite as big as our Sturdi pens but it is very good quality and the cats seem to like it. Not tried it in the car as yet but hoping it will be a better option than our usual carriers going to shows.

This pack is spacious, well ventilated and the hard shell makes it a bit water and wind-resistant. The option to unfold the back for extended travel needs and picnicking purposes is great. It’s also pretty comfortable to wear too.

My cat even loves the little feather toy that it came with. The only negative is that it smells badly of chemicals/plastic when it arrives. I even aired it outside for a full day before using and my can still smelled of the backpack after use.

My 3 month old kitten loves this carrier. We had another one before this that she did not care for what so ever, but with this one all we have to do is open the side pouch and she goes running inside.

Only concern is that it does get hot inside the carrier so you have to be careful of the sun and temperate outside. Our vet even warned us to only use it for short time spans during warm weather.

purchased this backpack for our smallest cat (9lb) Henry for traveling purposes. he doesn’t mind it in the least. walks right in the small corner zip pocket. have even taken him on a walk with his standard poodle sister.

he sat looking out the entire time. #winner.

Great for kitties. I bought 3 for my chihuahuas to travel. There isn’t enough space for them to stand up but no wonder they aren’t cats! Just hoping they would fit because they are well made.

So easy to place a reluctant cat inside! I have now used twice and am very pleased. The collapsible feature is really great because of our limited storage. I would give more stars if I could!

Love it! This is a completely different design than past carriers for me. So nice that it folds to a compact size for storage. Very easy to open up. Very roomy inside for kitty.
