There’s an important component standing between your engine and your drive wheels: the transmission. Inside that metal case is a bewildering array of gears, bearings, seals, and more. The automatic transmission is a miracle of modern engineering, but it can also be a source of trouble.
If your transmission breaks down you’re not going anywhere, and if it’s just not working properly, your car will never realize its performance potential. In this book, expert mechanic and drag racer Cliff Ruggles demystifies the popular GM 700-R4 and 4L60 automatic transmissions.
Keeping the enthusiast in mind, Ruggles explains the history of these transmissions, presents critical identification guidelines, and leads the reader through the complete disassembly, repair and upgrade, and assembly processes.
DIY-ers will learn how to test their transmission to ensure its proper operation before installing it in the car. This book includes information about high-performance modifications, both from the factory and the aftermarket.
These include internal parts and external components such as shift kits and torque converters that will help you make your transmission perform at its best. It also covers common installation issues such as mounting, shifters and linkages, wiring harnesses, and more, and includes a special section by Ro McGonegal on swapping these transmissions into earlier performance and musclecar chassis.
Although not quite the heavy-duty performer as its big brother, the Turbo 400, the Turbo 350 transmission is a fine, durable, capable, and when modified, stout performer in its own right. Millions of GM cars and trucks have been built with Turbo 350 automatic transmissions.
There always comes a time when the old transmission shows signs of wear. At some point, even the best transmissions need to be rebuilt. In GM Turbo 350 Transmissions: How to Rebuild & Modify, respected automotive technical author Cliff Ruggles guides you through the complex rebuild procedure of GM’s popular rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission.
With his proven style, Ruggles goes through the step-by-step rebuild and performance upgrade procedures in a series of full-color photos. He includes instruction on removal and installation, tear-down procedures, parts inspection and replacement, as well as performance mods and shift kit installation.
Time-saving tips are part of every buildup as well. Automatic transmissions are a mystery to most. Even if you end up deciding to have a professional take care of your transmission repair and performance needs, the information contained in this book is crucial to understanding how the power gets from the engine to the road.

Informative, but could have been more in depth for anyone really wanting to know exactly what makes the th350 function. Fluid paths, valve body function, pump control, etc, wasnt very detailed. I also found it interesting that a book about modifying a th350 could be published without a single expanded view drawing of the th350 internal components.
The B&M Shift Improver Kit can help increase the performance and durability of your stock automatic transmission. By eliminating many restrictive oil flow controls in the transmission’s valve body, it allows the transmission to shift more firmly and reduce slippage and shift overlap, providing crisper shifts and reducing wear.
Each kit gives you two modes of performance to select from — RV/heavy duty or street/strip. The heavy duty option provides positive shifts without loss of driver comfort for improved performance, and is designed for regular passenger vehicles.
The street/strip option provides positive shifts for high performance street use or for competitive events, and is designed for the enthusiast who wants the hardest, quickest possible shift.

Reviews From Real Customers
HOW DECIDED: I read the reviews on the Dorman replacement steel pan with drain plug, another steel deep pan with cooling tubes in the bottom of the pan (can remember the brand)and the B & M pan. The B & M pan had the best overall reviews.
I went to the Summit store and looked at all three. I decided on the B & M pan because it is a nice THICK cast aluminum with a drain plug and temperature sensor port. APPERANCE: Nice thick heavy cast aluminum; solid.
(I spray painted the pan gloss black. ) INSTALLATION: No modification was required on my vehicle. The trans pan comes with filter spacers in order position the filter near the bottom of the pan. PRICE/VALVE Not the least expensive pan BUT not having worry about striping the drain plug threads and to add a temp sensor port makes is the reason I rated a 5.
QUALITY: See Appearances rating. The trans pan came with pan allen head bolts and flat washers. (I added lock washers). I recently purchased 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 that I will use tow a 16000 GVWR trailer.
The reason I purchased auto trans pan is I want a auto trans pan with a drain plug. In order to change the oil (but not the filter) on regular basis with dropping the pan.

Not very descriptive, and missing key information and instructions. Missing things like parts exploded views, actual procedural info. Very picture heavy. Although the pictures are color and very good, there’s few actual words detailing what to do or what to watch out for during procedures.
Just one example: installation of the direct drum piston is fairly difficult to get right the first time for a beginner, as three seals must be seated at once while keeping the piston straight and level as it goes in.
And yet nowhere is it even described in words or pictures. Basically it just sums it up as ‘install the piston’. Thanks. we can figure that out ourselves, we don’t need a book to do it. What WOULD be worth spending money on is tips or tricks to install it, like use a feeler gauge to slip the outside seal in place, or something similar.
And so on and so forth. The whole book is pretty much that way. It’s lacking in every regard except it’s got pretty pictures. Pretty much this is just standard stuff you can either figure out on your own or don’t need anyhow.
I would say the pictures are very good and somewhat useful, but where’s the rest of the book I paid for? Like, actual words? We do still use them, right?.

Purchased for a SBC 355 BluePrint crate motor with 700r4. Popped it out of its box, and gave it a once over. found no chipped teeth or dents and i read on the plate “This side must be toward Transmission”, which also happened to be the same side as the weight.
slapped it on and took my torque converter and just lined it up to see if the bolts would have any issues. sure enough the weight was in the way. called my mechanic buddy over who laughed historically at me and said i put it on backwards.
i showed him the laser etched info and he said that it must have been a manufacturer defect but to just flip it around and ill be fine. i flipped it and now there aren’t any issues. i called TCI just to be sure that this wouldn’t be an issue and they responded “Yes we are aware of the issue and the individual who was doing the laser engraving just put the plates in backwards.
nothing mechanically wrong what so ever”. haven’t turned the new engine over yet but i do have my transmission bolted up and the plate to my torque converter match up great with a tiny gap of about 0.
110. i don’t believe a company should be judged the the actions of one oblivious individual, but by the quality of the parts and so far it looks pretty good.
This went up to the pump housing and cleared as if it was all factory, I can now do operation freedom pulls once again in this over hyped pandemic and cruise free. The housing is thick and strong like Americas freedom.
Zero cutting of the extra loop at the top of the housing per instructions. It’s even SFI certified so I can be a pro mod. Put this on a turbo 400 in a 76 stingray. Make sure your trans case is ground done enough especially the three little tabs on the trans casing and at the bottom, you’ll see a slight gap between the trans housing and jw housing.
Completely normal. Because you want the jw matted Against the pump housing flat. As a pre caution I put a tiny dab of permatex on the bolts, you don’t need too but just extra precautions. Torque Down to 18ft lbs like Instructions say.
Thanks to this housing it saved me from buying a new trans, I can make clouds now and the roar of the exhaust and sound of bald eagles and freedom.

This bell housing weighs about 30 pounds and is heavy duty. It indicated within. 0035 TIR to my aftermarket engine block with was excellent. I had an issue with my side kick out oil pan drain plug interfering with the block plate.
My drain is on the rear of the pan and the large lower flange of the housing was blocking the drain plug from being removed. I was able to put it on my mill and machine a notch for the drain plug. Also, the starter opening will not allow a stock style 153 tooth starter nose cone to fit without modifications.
It appears to be set up for a 168 style starter. I solved this by using a racing mini style starter that has no nose cone. I installed a new magnum transmission with a twin disc clutch and everything lined up perfectly!.
Trans not installed yet but Bell-housing appears to be ultra high quality & strength. All reviews Ive seen say its very easy to get the Trans/input/clutch alignment perfect & after actually seeing the piece it doesn’t surprise me.

This Unit only works in Vehicles with a 13 Pin wiring harness connector. Our experts may be able to assist you with the proper installation.
Took a trip from Virginia to Michigan, it was night and day. Lower rpm than factory. Plus I could really see the benefits of my engine upgrades done previously with this transmission. Had to remember that I wasn’t in a race car lol.
Came with everything shown, directions, torque specs and tool list. Last piece I needed to complete my LS swap to an older 4l80, now the engine is fully secured to the bell housing and I’m no longer nervous about pulling a load with the truck.
Bonus i now have an extra set of bell housing and torque converter bolts.
Just received mine today. It looks like it fits exactly for the 4L80/4L85. Comes with all of the bolts required to connect to the transmission and back of the LS Oil Pan. Also has the bolts to connect the flex plate to the crank and the flex plate to the torque converter.
The surfaces that are not touching the pan or the transmission are rougher than I would have thought but they don’t seem to matter. Seems strange to be able to scratch your wrist on the outside curve of the part.
A bell housing is the cover for the back of an engine that contains the flywheel or clutch. It mates the engine to the transmission and is usually made of cast aluminum. A bell housing for a 454 big block engine would need to be specifically made for that engine, as the dimensions and bolt pattern would be different from other engines.
The torque converter is the part of the transmission that helps to transfer the rotational force from the engine to the transmission. It is a fluid coupling that uses a pump to circulate transmission fluid through a turbine.
The turbine is connected to the input shaft of the transmission. As the engine RPMs increase, the turbine spins faster and transfers more torque to the transmission.
A flexplate is a metal plate that is attached to the crankshaft of an engine. The flexplate has teeth that mesh with the teeth on the transmission’s input shaft. The flexplate helps to transfer the rotational force from the engine to the transmission.
The 454 big block transmission is a 4-speed automatic transmission that was used in GM vehicles from 1996 to 2003. The transmission is based on the 4L80E transmission and was used in a variety of vehicles, including the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon.
The 454 big block transmission is capable of handling up to 700 ft-lbs of torque and is known for its durability and reliability.
The shifter of transmission for 454 big block chevy is a part that helps to change the gears in the transmission. This is usually done by moving a lever or knob on the shifter.
The shifter knob of the transmission for 454 big block is a large, round knob that is used to shift gears. It is typically made of metal or plastic and is located on the top of the transmission.
The transmission cooler is a device that is used to cool the fluid in a transmission. The 454 big block transmission has a large capacity and therefore requires a large cooler. The transmission cooler is usually located in front of the radiator and uses air from the radiator to cool the fluid.
The transmission cooler is an important part of the cooling system and helps to keep the fluid from overheating.
The transmission fluid for a 454 big block is typically a synthetic ATF, or automatic transmission fluid. This type of fluid is designed to withstand the high temperatures and pressures that are generated by the transmission, and it also has special additives that help to protect the transmission components from wear.
The 454 big block is a powerful engine that is capable of delivering a lot of torque and power. It is a reliable engine that is built to last. It is a great choice for a performance engine.
