20 Best Traeger For The Money (2023 Updated)

There are some great pellet grills on the market like Mak and Yoder but they are in the $4000 range and not readily available in Canada. Enter the Traeger Ironwood. It’s double sidewalled for cold weather cooks, has no under cabinet that requires cleaning, has a large hopper with a light and pellet level indicator, strong DC motor auger, and a great app with good connectivity.

I’ve been using it at least once a week, 52 weeks a year rain snow or shine and in -30 degree weather. At this price I’d put the Ironwood at the top if my list. After 2 years it still connects great and works like day 1.

Compared to previous uninsulated grills I’ve owned there is no comparison. The Ironwood outperforms them all, has rock steady temperatures, performs great in low temps and has great wifi and app performance.

Build quality is top notch with heavy guage steel and no wobble or play. Recommemded to all Canadians unless you want to spend double to mail order a better grill from the US. Traeger hit a homerun on this grill at this price point.

Got this smoker when it was on sale and it has been great so far. I’ve made steaks, burgers and a brisket on it so far. It has done great with each of those. Added the shelf on the front and got the Traeger cover for it to keep the outside looking good since I don’t have a porch or anything to hide it under.

Did break the plastic piece that lets you set the brake on one of the smaller wheels when setting it up but that was my own fault, just be careful when standing it up if you flipped it upside down to put the legs on.

Like the ability to change out the liners quickly underneath the grill and in the grease trap for quick and easy cleanup. Setup and control with the app was very easy. I love the ability to just push recipes from the app to the grill and it automatically sets the timer or the goal for the temperature probe.

So far I’ve only used Mesquite pellets but I look forward to trying some others soon.

I decided to get an early Father’s Day present and order Ironwood 885 last month. Received it and set it up 5/18/2021. Where to start, it has been nothing but great food coming off these smoker ( I don’t really consider it a grill yet).

I have smoked chickens, chicken wings and breast, St. Louis Back ribs, pork butt as I work my way up to smoking a brisket. So far the food and favor FAVOR has been better that what I had experience before.

I been a loyal Weber Kettle (18 inch) and still keeping it. My neighbor has a Green Egg and originally I was deciding to get a Green Egg but my neighbor convict me to get a pellet grill more specifically Traeger Ironwood.

He was right. Every meat off this bad boy has been nothing but positive reviews to the point where other neighbors are asking me to increase the meat production! Already received orders to make 2 pork butt along with 2 briskets.

This is not something that I was looking to make a habit off but I truly enjoy smoking on it so going to do my best to meet the demand. Having said this, the only small hiccup that I originally had was getting the grill connected to the wifi.

The issue was not a ‘range’ signal issue (I work in IT as a profession). For me personally, it would not connect on either of my two android phones. However, the grill automatically connected to my iPad that was more that 10 feet away (inside the house).

Since the connection is linked to the account, I was able to login to my account on my android phone and it was there already. I tried many recipes and it just an amazing experience with both the apps and the smoker over all.

I recommend it. I also recommend getting the Traeger All Natural Grill Cleaner – 32 Oz. and a small vacuum cleaner.

I’ve owned my Traeger now almost year. Only issue my fault should have purchased the larger model. This unit other than size has done me well. It was my step from side firebox smoking, which I still use.

The east of this smoker and set/forget taking most of the management out of the cooking great. Sure it doesn’t have all the whistles and bells, but serves my purpose and entry to pellet smoking. I’m a week I use this for just about anything and will smoke everyday if I could.

Quality of unit is good yet only draw back the cheaper stainless used for pellet fire box, heat plate, and drip pan only issue I’ve had. Six months of use I researched replace all with a higher end heavier gauge that does not warp and retains heat and better heat transfer.

This unit has maintained my temps well and provides a good cook with smoke. I do use a smoke tube for enhanced smoke flavor when needed. I have use in cold in southern state down to 30 with an optimal blanket for it I recommend.

With a cord element protector for the extension connection used in very heavy rain. The unit performed well. You can’t stop smoking a 8-12 hour cut protein just due to weather. Construction is solid have had no issues as I do keep covered when not in use.

I hd one issue auger hung loading fire pit box. I had walked in as it came to temp. Looked back out window dang a smoke filled yard couldn’t see smoker. Opened lid removed everything to see firebox next I know two foot flames shooting out the unit.

Did get it under control cleaning fire pit out. Restated and have no issues since. Just make sure you clean regularly chamber for build up and at least every other smoke the firebox of ash.

I just bought my first Traeger Tailgater. Cooked a whole chicken on day one and it came out good but not great. Legs and wings were perfect, rest of the chicken undercooked. Next day tried again. Same basic results even after increasing time.

Their thermometer is “all over” the place. After reading the reviews here, there’s as many VERY VERY disappointed customers as happy ones. So either you get lucky and get a good one or you get the low end of the production line.

For this kind of price, they need to get their act MUCH BETTER together. One UNHAPPY customer will cost them FIVE new sales. That Traeger name can go down in a blaze of glory REAL FAST once the word gets out there.

Seems you either LOVE them or you HATE them. Very VERY LITTLE in between. Something wrong with quality control BIG TIME.

I bought this back in June and have had nothing but problems since day one. Mice have been attacking my grill constantly. I am not the only one that is having this issue and no solution can be found.

I have been able to use my grill 3 times since JUNE! every time I go to use it I have rodents in the firebox. I have tried to keep the pellet hopper full and empty no change. I have added Mesh to the drip access and to the top of the smoke chimney still the same result.

Come to find out where the fan attaches is open with no mesh or any type of protective covering to stop this from happening. I am so grossed out by this its difficult to even consider cooking on this grill.

I would not have expected the lack of attention to detail on this and wish I could return my grill but am unable to do so. The times I have used the grill the food has been average and the results have not been what I would have expected.

People say you get what you pay for but when you spend A LOT OF MONEY I am sure you would expect some quality for your purchase. Also I DO NOT live in the woods and have never had any rodent issues like this before.

Researched and studied the entire Traeger product line forever. Was deciding between the Pro series and the Ironwood series. Even though I am not an experienced “griller” I decided to go with the Ironwood.

The Pro series is awesome from family and friends that have purchased that line. I just wanted something a little out of my comfort zone to grow into. I tend to keep and use things forever so that was a tiny factor I used in spending a little more.

Overall, this grill is rock solid. So many gadgets and fun things you can add on to this grill to help with anything that you are going to grill. It has made me comfortable to actually grill for people.

I NEVER was the person who grilled. Even though I have only used it 3 times now (HA!) I have grilled for people 2 of those times. I love this grill. It is worth the money I promise you. As long as you cover it when you are not using it, clean it when you should I am pretty sure it will be part of your cooking routing for years to come.

If you are debating on a Traeger, do what I did and look up You Tube videos. Look around the internet and watch people grill with it. I think you will understand why other people purchase this grill.

Again, I debated on buying a Traeger for over a year and finally did it. You will be happy. It is just a solid piece of equipment with tons of suppose online and in stores everywhere. Oh. one more thing.

When you are debating the size do this. if you are never going to grill for more than 2 people. Get the smaller size of any of the grills from them. If you are going to grill for 4 people or more. get the larger size.

I promise you will thank me.

You will spend all of your time fixing it! A year and a half ago, I bought a Traeger PRO 575 grill and all I have done is spend my time on the phone with customer service and manually repairing this grill.

If you love spending your weekends fixing grills and talking to customer service, these grills are for you! I have been troubleshooting it for so long that by the time I actually asked for a refund they claimed I was to far out of the refund time even though the grill is still under warranty! That sounds legit right? Well I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau and if you are looking at buying a pellet smoker read this review right here.

You will be repairing it, you will be spending your weekends and free time talking to customer service. It will be another chore for you to do. Not to mention the joy of repeating yourself every time you call in.

I maybe had the same conversation 10-12 times. Imagine going through the same 10 troubleshooting steps every time you call in for the same problem. Everytime you call in its going to be your whole morning, going through the same explanation, working on it, taking all the pieces off and putting them back on.

Occasionally they will send you a replacement piece that you have to repair, so get youtube out and follow along with the instructions. Now imagine months of this, always on your to do list, never being able to actually use the $500+ piece of tech you just bought.

Don’t waste your money, don’t waste your time, don’t buy Traeger.

I had a competing brand before finally returning it to buy this smoker. All these pellet grills seem to do the same job, however, the level of temperature control was the convincing feature to just spend the extra cash.

The other smoker I had wouldn’t let you set the temp anywhere between 250 and 300, ruling out certain styles of cooking. The Traeger let’s you set in 5° increments, letting you have full control. Obviously no grill will maintain a perfect temperature throughout the cook, but at least being able to set the temp you want it to maintain is the main draw of pellet smokers.

Setup was pretty easy. They give you literally every tool you need to assemble, and the instructions are easy to follow. You can get buy doing it by yourself, but it’ll go faster with someone helping you.

This smoker is a nice manageable size, unless you plan on cooking for the whole neighborhood. The app works well in my experience, and is quick to report the temps inside the grill. My only complaint is that it is a bit tricky getting all the ash out with my vacuum with how they setup the inside of the grill, but this is really a minor issue.

I can get the vast majority of ash and haven’t had any issues with my cooks. 100% would buy again.

Since I started grilling & smoking a long, long time ago, I have always dreamed of owning a Traeger. The high price tag has always been the deterrent but I finally decided that I just had to have one.

I read the many negative reviews & still chose to purchase the Pro 575 model. Sadly, that was a huge mistake. All of the negative reviews concerning drastic temperature swings, poor quality & wi-fi connectivity issues were all very true.

Many other reviewers have detailed these particular problems as well as many many others. No sense in me going over what so many disappointed buyers of a Traeger product have already elaborated on. The bottom line is that there are serious flaws with these grills/smokers.

Do yourself a big favor. Don’t buy one. The number of negative reviews in relationship to positive reviews is rising drastically as well as daily. I had a Pit Boss Austin XL 1000. I paid under $500. 00 for it.

It was very dependable. It far and away out performed my new Traeger in every category and for a lot less money. I wish that I still had it. Instead I can look forward to many long winded service calls on the phone, ordering parts and waiting forever for them to arrive, crawling around on the ground to install them for free while playing service technician for Traeger.

Oh, and last but certainly not least, staring at my inoperative $900. 00 piece of junk that I can’t even grill or smoke on. Do yourself a huge favor. Buy anything else but a Traeger. You will be glad that you did.

Purchased a Pro Seires 34 in June 2020 and have had no issue with it’s performance and am still amazed at the cooking capability. It is an excellent smoker and smoker oven. I’ve not been able to do a true reverse sear on steaks but slow cooking anything on this is a snap.

Yes, you may have temp fluctuations (it’s not like your inside oven keeping an exact even temperature throughout the entire cooking cycle) but cooking low and slow is the way to go anyway. I’ve found on some cooking receipes I just need to plan on a longer cooking time.

And you may want to complete your grilling reverse sear on another cooking devise. Cooked meat, potatoes, scalloped potatoes, mac & cheese, more meat and then some meat on this machine and have NOT been disappointed any over the nearly 2 years I’ve had it.

I start everything on “Smoke” for a good smoke flavor then adjust up to the temp I want to finish cooking at without ever having that heavy smoke flavor. Clean it every so often and put foil over the stainless cooking grate for easier grease cleanup (it’s still a mess but easier).

It did take me a few times to become familiar with the unit but now I feel like a seasoned smoking guru!.

I’ve owned my Pro 34 for less than three months and have used it three times. The first cook went well. During the second cook the temperature swings were crazy. I had it set at 180, and the swings went from 90 to 315.

I called Traeger and they figured the problem was likely the RTD sensor (temperature sensor). They promptly sent me a replacement. The instructions to replace it were pretty simple and I had no issues changing the part.

Yesterday I fired up the grill for a third time. Temperature set at 180. For the first Three hours the temperature fluctuated between 175 and 220. While this is a big swing, I can live with it. After hour 3, the temperature went to 280-295 and was not dropping.

I decided to just turn off the grill. This is a three month old pellet grill. Why is it my responsibility to change parts on the grill? I believe Traeger should figure out a way to do that for me. And, I still have the temperature problem.

Not quite sure what to do at this point. I am very good about not opening the lid, and I purchased the Traeger insulation blanket. Thus far, I am very disappointed in this product.

I bought this grill 8 months ago and the WiFire has never worked. I’ve tried two different phones, two different routers, and countless setting adjustments. Every time I call customer service I get the runaround of troubleshooting steps that do not work.

I bought a new router, still doesn’t work. I have tried every single step I’ve seen everywhere online and have been told by customer service, everything we have tried has done nothing and yet they will not replace the components and make it right.

This has been the worst customer service I have ever had on a product this expensive. My brother just told me last weekend he was ready to buy a Traeger, I told him to buy anything but this piece of junk.

To be honest, the smoke flavor isn’t that good either. Go buy yourself a $300 smoker and you will be much better off. This purchase is one I will regret for years to come. If you want a company that stands behind its products and keeps its customers satisfied, Traeger is not it.

Sooo. 57yrs old, never owned a smoker. Wife grew up in south Texas, I married her early in my military career. Military assignments meant she left Texas and proper brisket forever. Every time we moved across the country she looked for some “known” BBQ joint so she could try for good brisket.

All those moves, and never great brisket. Fast forward 30yrs. I buy the 700. Listen, I just have no desire to spend all day checking heat, adjusting fire, spending years developing a learning curve. On top of that – no pressure – but two of my friends are competition-level smokers/BBQers.

Enter the pellet smoker, and enter Recteq with a SIX year warranty, solid reputation, and legendary customer service. Plus, one of those two friends owns one and he has raved about it 10yrs. I researched smoking brisket a LOT (No need to make “first-time” mistakes when so many post theirs).

I settled on Franklin style for first brisket cook. The Recteq designers put together a machine that allows a person like me to produce absolute perfect, restaurant-quality, results. How do I know? On my very first brisket cook, after following fairly simple procedures found online and in a book a friend gifted me (trimming, sprinkling on a rub, temp selection, when to wrap in butcher paper, what temp to remove the brisket, letting it rest), I sliced the 10hr smoked, finished brisket and provided the first, picture-perfect, juicy piece of brisket to my wife.

The Recteq allows for this. an inexperienced, first-time smoker who spends a little time doing some research to understand the simple processes involved, made his deep-Texas wife cry and his competition friends smile on his very first brisket cook.

My only learning curve-item, I will slice a little thinner next time. That definately is an aquired skill. The 700 keeps perfect temp control, allows me to do other work while it’s doing the cook, and gave me better food than we experience at many of the restaurants we go to.

And I’m just getting started.

This is my first wood pellet smoker/grill. When I started shopping for one, I was all set to buy a Traeger Timberline 850, after visiting a friend who had just gotten one and loved it. But with a $2000 price tag, I felt like I should do my own research first.

I was not prepared for the overwhelming number of choices, unbiased reviews, BBQ bloggers with comparisons between models and brands. RecTeqs superior quality was a commonality in many of the articles I read.

Between the 6 year warranty, extensive use of stainless components, huge pellet hopper, temperature range, wifi connectivity, and the really cool aesthetics, LOVE the bullhorn handles!!, I decided RecTeq was the way to go.

The grill arrived less than 2 weeks after I ordered it, a front folding shelf and grill plates. I watched the youtube assembly video before it arrived, which made the actual assembly a breeze. I did need my husbands help assembling it, I imagine a strong guy could do it alone, but it would definitely be easier with 2 people.

Took us less then 2 hours to unbox it and have it turned out to do the initial burn in. I have only used it 5 or 6 times so far, everything has been cooked perfectly. The grill plates really elevate the sear on steaks and burgers.

I would highly recommend getting a set when you order. I have actually used the flat side for reverse seared steaks, to get a crust, which I prefer over grill marks. I have had a hard plumbed gas grill on my deck for over 30 years, I may never use it again.

The only negative thing I can say, is getting it to connect to my dual band router was a little tricky. I installed the app on my iphone, but couldn’t pair with the grill. There was a warning that it needed to be on 2.

4g not a 5g, I had seen several reviews that mentioned the issue as well. After a few failed attempts of trying to connect, I decided to see if could temporarily disable the 5g – that wasn’t an option, so instead I ended up going my router’s setup website, created a 2.

4g only guest network, used the same password as my current connection to avoid conflicts once I was got the grill paired. made sure my phone was on the guest network and voila connected! For whatever reason it wouldn’t initially pair when on the dual band signal, it now connects regardless of which connection my phone is using.

All in all I couldn’t be happier. Grill on!!.

This is my first RecTeq and pellet grill in general. I have been cooking on charcoal and applewood for years. Love using this grill and being able to easily maintain heat. Do kind of miss the grilling on direct flame, but what you gain on ease on long cooks makes up for it.

Still can sear if you use a cast iron griddle or a sear kit. Couple of things I do have issue with is that the controller should have dual band wifi. Should upgrade all controllers on the grills to have this and not limit it just to the new grill models.

It is 2022 most people have dual or tri band routers at this point. For people like myself it who know technology it is a little incontinent to get connected, but for others that don’t they would probably just assume it is broken.

Other issue has to do with the app. The android version is hugely outdated compared to the ios app, and in comparison to say the Traeger app it is missing a ton of functionality. At times notifications do not work correctly, and the recipes section of the app should not be a mobile webpage that just loads into the app container.

At a minimum android and ios apps should be on the same level of quality. Overall this is an amazing grill and I love it. Just upgrade all of the controllers to meat modern wifi standards, and update the app.

This cover is very generous, sturdy and tough. Very well stitched and put together. We have a similar fabric one on another grill that is 3 yrs old and stays out all year round ( Minnesota weather ) and it still looks like new so I’m planning on this to be the same.

I got this 70” size to fit our 60”wide, 48” tall, 24” deep grill. It is a very generous fit and goes down to the floor all around. It has an elastic drawstring on the bottom and 4 clip straps to attach to legs/wheels.

I’ve had some high winds since I’ve had it and it stayed on without using any of these but they are there for back up. It is easy to put on because it is sturdy and not flimsy when putting on. It is a light color as is the other one I have but that has not been a problem for gathering dirt.

I’ve had vinyl before that cracks, tears easily and collects dirt so you have to clean it all the time before removing from grill.

I don’t actually use my BBQ cover for a grill. Yes you heard right. I am disabled and require an electric mobility chair that goes onto a basket and is otherwise left to the elements. I have had to use grill covers since I couldn’t find one for my purpose that was remotely tough enough to protect and not come apart at highway speeds.

Until now I have only found black covers which works great for the winter but almost causes actual burns in the spring and summer. Not so with this robust and light colored “protector of the chair”. It has made a world of difference for me so for a grill it should last a lifetime! And I will be telling all of my friends who have grills and those who I meet that have mobility chairs.

(Maybe I could get a little in-store credit for recommendations).

We have bought two of these. The first one lasted 3-4 years and was disintegrating after the third season. Because we were so impressed by the weight of the material and the design, we bought another, thinking that we had done something wrong.

We paid closer attention to the second one. Again four seasons passed and we are shopping for another cover. The first thing to go was the straps. then it began to come apart at the seams. The material would give off dust when shaken or wiped, which is the material degrading.

It turns out that these covers do not withstand UV, and we are in southwest British Columbia, not Arizona. Not buying a third one.

Researching lots of pellet grills brought me to the conclusion that none of them actually grill or smoke at a high level. If you want to have great results, you will need a smoking specialist appliance and a grilling specialist appliance.

I bought the bullseye as a grilling specialist and it is exactly that. Some may want to avoid this grill because it is not a “set it and forget it” type of grill. No Wi-Fi and the possibility of flare ups (because of its less restricted access to flame) mean that you will need to check more often and use oil collection pans on long cooks, but if you are serious about cooking and want to have a real grill that uses pellet fuel, this is perfect.

I’ve made steaks using a collection pan under the grates and a small cast iron griddle on the grates. I cook the steak at 225 until 115, then rest it and remove the collection pan, while the grill goes to riot mode, slap it on that griddle when it get to 650 (took less than 10 min) for an intense all over sear.

I cooked chicken wings directly on the grates with no pan at 200 for 30-45 min, then flip and crank up to 400 and cook the wings to 190, best smoked wings ever. I cooked a pork shoulder with a drip pan that I removed at 165 and used as a vessel to wrap the shoulder then back on until 205, it was perfect.

The cleaning process is maybe the best part of this grill. It only has two parts to move in order to clean (grates and deflector) and they both nest in the grill so no fumbling with them. Bottom line is that this grill is an amazing grilling specialist that happens to use pellets as fuel.

It clobbers Traeger grills in terms of getting searing heat and access to kisses of flame. It’s lowest setting is 200 degrees and you can’t do a long cook without taking flare up precautions, but I intend to get a purpose built smoker for those cooks.

I love this grill so much. It’s a great little machine.

I was really excited to get the grill, and actually now that I finally got it to work, it works Great! Although when I got it I put it together, but the first time I used it would not work. I set it up on a Saturday evening and Sunday I was planning to cure and cook something, I started in the morning and it would not light or get hot and after some time it would shut down and I would get a error message.

I scooped the pellets out and tried to re start it, this didn’t work and I tried it several times at different temperatures still didn’t work finally I called a friend that had recommended it and he said to unplug it and let it reset and try again.

I did unplugged it scooped the excess pellets out again and retried it. I did this from 8:00AM until 4:30PM trying different things to make it work, since I had all my meat ready, but No luck! Monday Morning I called your Company and spoke to Nicholas Jones, and we discussed the problem he said he would discuss with someone in the office and call me back.

when he called back I had to take part of the hopper (the Black portion) apart and get to the fan. I spun the fan and it started working, after that I put it back together, and it has been working fine.

I guess my biggest problem was when I spoke to Nicholas I told him about 2 bags of pellets I received that were broken open (not just a small tear but the whole front of the bag and the top were ripped open not from transportation but came that way from RecTeq) and taped up (wasn’t planning to mention until this problem I had to call for the grill not working).

He said they would send me more pellets but I told him not to worry about it since I had 5 bags which were taking up a large area in my garage. I did ask him if I could get a cover instead since it would be cheaper, and easier to send, I felt this would make up for the pellets and all my time (over 5 hours wasted) and trouble with the grill not starting and not being able to grill on Sunday! But I was told not the only thing they could do for me was to replace the torn bags of pellets.

I did ask Nicholas if I could talk to the manager but was never given the named or number. Overall I like the Grill much better than the Trager I had, but I was disappointed in the service I received.

I have owned may pellet smoker/BBQs, (300-3500 sq/in. ) over the past 10 years and was very excited to find out that Recteq has expanded their operations to the Salt Lake City area of Utah. I have wanted a Reqtec for many years so I impulsed bought a Bulleye grill and here are my first thoughts.

I am not trying to steer anyone away from this grill, I am only telling my thoughts based on years of experience owning other pellet grills and comparing it with this grill. Design: First let’s talk pell efficiency, This grill uses the least amount of pellets I have seen from any grill at any temperature.

It is amazing when it comes to this. The overall design comes from the classic Webber grill. which also means that it also comes with classic Webber mess. Over the past ten years I have been spoiled with the newer pellet grill design where grease will hit a very large plate and get discarded to one end of the grill making it very easy for cleaning.

I am not a clean freak by any means however one issue is cooking low and slow cook with many hours of large amounts of grease hitting the metal catch plate as well as grease in the bottom of the grill.

If the bottom of the grill is not cleaned (I line with foil for easy cleaning) and the foil changed/removed from the metal plate by the next cook at above 350, you get grease fire. I clean my gills after any long smoke or BBQ that there is a high concentrate of fat in the meat.

Reqtec says for this grill, let the grease fall to the plate or bottom of the grill and the pellet ash will soak it up and to clean at the 200 lbs pellet usage. 200 lbs in this grill is a very long time and a lot of use.

My experience is that is only okay to a point. Grease causes fire and on this case the fire box flame is right next to the grease at the highest temp point on the grill. While not having this issue yet is still concerning and not something I want to have to deal with.

I bought the flat top skillet that matches the grill and followed the seasoning instructions. Lots of oil buildup on the sides of the gill after a few hours. The flat top skillet however is very good quality and a must add on for people who buy this grill.

Quality: The overall build quality is excellent, nice stainless steal however I would like to see a higher end food grate. This quality of grate is common on most low end grills and at this price point I believe Recteq can do better.

Look at the grills Webber includes in their round grills at this price point. Also this is not a Traeger grill, (I have owned 5 before saying never again) it is a Reqtec. This means something. This is small but part of owning a Reqtec.

Would also like to see the trademark long horn handle on the grill, even if it is only one horn. Even If I can buy it as a replacement upgrade to the grill. Cooking: I BBQ’ed chicken thighs at full temp with a drip pan under them.

This caught the grease however made the chicken cook in an indirect heat manner so at 500 degrees there was little to no grill marking. Kind of a disappointment for cooking at that temp. An upside was that the skin was crispy and food not burnt.

Also tried a brisket at 225 degrees. Came out perfectly. Final Thought: Over all nice grill at this price point. While the design can stand improvements it cooks very evenly and does not break the bank on pellet usage.

Add the horn and make a grill improvement.

Brings simplicity to smoking meats, which is what I was looking for after using a wood/charcoal offset smoker. Easy to start when others in the family want to grill on it. The sear plate works as advertised and can sear a steak with ease when using as a grill.

It took me about and hour and a half assemble by myself. Very sturdy and well built. Only complaint is it does not come with meat probes which I purchased separately. But the cover included with this model is a bonus.

We are so happy with this grill!! Purchased after having a Traeger that was still under manufacturer warranty but we had so many issues with it that we decided to go with a different brand instead of having it fixed.

The pit boss has more than met our expectations in performance. Pro tip: the ThermoPro wireless probe meat thermometer is the perfect addition to this awesome grill!.

Fairly easy but a bit time consuming to put together, but was able to do it by myself. Seems to cook very well. Since I’ve only had it a little while, haven’t been able to check out it’s features for various smoking.

Replaced a bullet smoker. I wanted to upgrade. We have a small yard and I wanted something with a small footprint. I purchased a Pit Boss at a DIFFERENT SUPPLIER and there was a faux advertising problem.

They claimed it had a PID controller in their ad and it didn’t. Once I found out, I returned it before it came out of the box. Although somewhat inconvenient, I didn’t blame Pit Boss for this, rather the other retailer.

I kept looking and found this great Fourth of July sale. Knowing it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, for this price I couldn’t pass it up. Assembly was relatively easy. Took about 90 minutes, but I took my time.

Only one issue. A couple screws that hold the cord wrap bracket were put on tight at the factory. I am still unable to get them loose. Now comes the cooking learning curve. Ribs were my first try on the grill and they turned out okay.

But the blame lies on me. because I let the pellet hopper go dry. The ribs were still good, with great smoke taste, pulled back from the bone and the flex in the rack, however they were “al dente,” not fall off the bone.

My bad. Not the machine. Next I tried something simple, burgers. The turned out to be some of the best I’ve made in a while. I was especially impressed with the ease at which the grill transitioned from high heat to low when I wanted to melt cheese.

And, the wonderful smoke flavor is always there with virtually none of the start up time I’m used to with charcoal. Last night was lamb chops. They were fantastic with a beautiful, delicate smoke flavor.

Tonight is a pork roast and I expect excellent results again, so long as I keep the hopper full, and that’s not going to be a concern unless there is a long smoking time, like ribs or brisket. There are some minor flaws like the screws mentioned above and the variance between temps on the settings thermometer and the hood thermometer, but overall I’d say this is a fantastic value.

I got a great deal and I’m now a pellet grill fan.

Received the grill yesterday when it was -15 degrees Celsius and snowing (-25 with Windchill) but I was so excited that I decided to give it a try anyways. I was amazed that it was still able to reach 400F even without the use of an insulated blanket.

First meal was amazing. Even more impressed with the customer service. I submitted a question online and received an answer within hours. I then placed a rather large online order on pitboss-grills. ca and received my shipment the next morning, with some free spices.

Not even Amazon has that kind of speed or service. Can’t say enough good things about Pit Boss right now.

Amazing! I just bought it & I had the best burger I have ever had & all the other meats are perfect. The reason I bought it is because my gas grill always has flare ups & burns the food. This will never happen with a Smoker/Pellet grill.

Once you have a smoker, you will never go back to a gas grill. I really wanted a Traeger, since they are the ones who everyone compares themselves to & they have been around the longest. For me, I like that this Pit Boss is little smaller (Fits in my garage) & yet, with 2 rows of grates (465 square inches) to cook with, plenty of room to cook with.

I also really like the metal removable tray on the right side. The hopper is only 5 pounds, but plenty big unless your cooking the whole day. The beer opener is even a nice touch. The only thing I don’t care for is the metal wheels.

This is however the best price on a smoker you will find like that has everything you need. The Traeger is about twice as much, which is why I went with the Pit Boss & I’m very happy it. Enjoy your new smoker & you will never go back to a gas grill.

This was given to me as a Christmas gift. Started a pork butt at 185 on super smoke for three hours then bumped it up to 225 on super smoke until I wrapped it. Used Traeger hickory and apple pellets.

It has a nice smoke ring but no smoke flavor. I don’t want to hear about their clean blue smoke. I had a $300 master built that produced great smoke flavor. I bought this to use as a smoker since I have another grill I use for searing.

It is worthless as a smoker. I called Traeger and their response was to buy a smoke tube. That is unacceptable for a $2,000 grill. What is worse is that we wanted to support local and bought the grill through a local platinum dealer.

Now we have to return the grill through them and they charge a 20% restocking fee. Traeger won’t do anything so now I am out $400. Save yourself the money and just use your convention oven. It’s the same thing.

I own a lil Tex for the last 13 years and use it at least 6 times a month regardless of weather and live in the Sierras above 4300′ elevation. It is obvious that the Traeger engineers have listened to input from their customers.

Many additions even as simple as the start is much easier, and to my surprise there is a “cold temperature start” for when it is colder outside. Built in shut down feature is a nice touch as well. Using the super smoke feature allows me to impart good smoke flavor in chicken much quicker than my “lil Tex that could” and run the temps up to finish it out saving me time and pellets.

In 25 degree weather I set it to 500 C and it achieved the temperature allowing me to sear my steaks in the middle of the last snow storm. Double wall insulation also helps with temperature control and holds within 5 degrees or so even with large ambient swings.

WiFi APP is acceptable, but make sure you have a dedicated 2. 4 as it will not run on 5. 2 negatives that I have for the app are 1) for a big smoker why is there only one meat probe? 2) When running off THE meat probe and setting the probe goal temperature; once the probe hits the temp there is no audible or visual alarm setting that I can find.

Only indicators other than the goal temperature dropping to 0 and of course the probe temperature itself.

This was a very difficult purchase for me. I own a camp chef woodwind in Georgia, but wanted better insulation for Alaska. A road show rep told my wife that the silverton 810 was full double wall insulation but it was not.

I had several issues beyond that with the silverton and really felt the traeger brand was over rated. I could never get my silverton to connect to WiFi and that combined with no insulation is why I took it back to Costco.

I had decided to get another camp chef with the insulation blanket, but they didn’t have shipping to Alaska. Back to the traeger by default. LI can honestly say I LOVE the timberline 1300. It is well worth the increase in price.

I have had zero connection issues and the double wall insulation is great. I smoked a beef chuck, 3 racks of baby back ribs and 2 pork butts today. I had plenty of room and even threw on some chicken reheat on the top shelf.

The timberline maintained temp within 5 degrees and the sealed chamber had little to no smoke leak. The temp today averaged 30 degrees (low 24 high 34) and it was breezy. The smoker was rock solid. After the ribs came off we were able to head off to some friends and enjoy them while the rest of the meat continued to smoke and I monitored it remotely.

When it hit temp I just used the app to put the smoker in keep warm mode and enjoyed more times with our friends. The meat was perfect and using the super smoke setting it had just the right amount of smoke for my families tastes.

I am a long time Traeger grill owner. After years of great food on our old Traeger we decided to upgrade to something a little bigger, WIFI, and insulated. Too our disappointment the wifi didn’t work, and after hours on the virtual help through Traeger I just gave up.

The pellet hopper does not flow and you need to push down the pellets quite often. The worst part i found is it is much more touchy on keeping clean than our old Traeger. It has caught fire on me three times in just over a year.

After the first time it caught fire we started cleaning it a lot more often than our old traeger. And it still catches fire sometimes if i turn it up over 400. My wife will not use it, I am nervous to use it or leave it alone for any amount of time.

I am truly disappointed we spent the extra money to go with This Traeger. I wish their was some sort of warranty as i believe their is something wrong with this grill.

I bought a Timberline 850 in June 2020 and have had issues with grease leaking since my first cook. I contacted Traeger about my issues and they told me parts would be sent to fix the issues. The first part they sent me a grease drawer.

This is despite the fact that I told them on the phone before they sent the drawer that it wasn’t the problem. But, they sent one anyway. Of course, that didn’t fix the issue. After the replacement grease drawer didn’t fix the issue, I called again and told them there seems to be an issue with the gasket above the drip pan where is doesn’t create a tight seal and grease escapes out, then leaks on the grease drawer cover, then out the corners of the grease tray (see pictures).

They said that gasket is not replaceable, and they would sent me a grease chute and other parts that would fix the issue. But, they said those parts out of stock. They also told me they would have someone come and replace them for me.

Eventually, in early September 2020 I did receive a package, but it was for two small parts that don’t seem to go anywhere on the smoker. I called back and they couldn’t explain to me what those parts were, but said that the correct parts were still on backorder.

The next week I received ANOTHER grease drawer that is of no help. I call back every week or so and also email. They have a general email address that no one answers. I have asked for call backs with updates, but no one has ever called or emailed me back when I ask for updates.

I have called in about 10 times these past 3 months. Every time I call, I speak to a different person and am assured the smoker will be fixed soon. But, they can’t give me a definitive date on the parts being in stock.

Last time I called they said parts would hopefully be here by January (6 months after I first called about the issues). In the meantime, I have to put a large pan under the grease drawer to prevent more grease stains on my patio and then clean up the big mess from the grease leaking.

I saw the negative review about WiFi and the 2 out of 5 rating and need to counter post. Sounds like a user error. Yes, I have multiple access points on my WiFi and if your going to leverage the features of WiFi you should make sure you have WiFi coverage where your grill is located.

Same concept applies for a WiFi doorbell or WiFi security camera on the outer parameter of the home that might be far away from your single WiFi router configuration. Other than that, I don’t have any issues with the WiFi features of the grill, I don’t even have to open the app on phone and I get temp reached or low pellet or shutdown finished alerts.

More importantly, the grill is awesome, I never accidentally overcook meat even at higher temps, generally never cook above 425 (if I’m just trying to cook fast) otherwise 225 super smoke and use the thermometer, which also sends an alert to my phone when reaches set temp.

Would I buy this grill again, yes. would I get the 1300 for more grill space, nope, normally a family of 4, even with small gatherings completely able to make 12 burgers and 12 cobs of corn with no issues.

Would I recommend this grill, yes, of course.

I was very excited to purchase a Traeger. It is not living up to the hype. If you purchase one make sure you buy the pellet sensor. First attempt after grill set up, I figured I would have enough pellets left since you can “grill for hours with the 18lb hopper” ran out halfway through cooking burgers.

If this happens, you have to shut the grill down which takes 15 min and start over. I’ve tried cooking on it a few times now based on recipes on their website, and nothing has come out cooked properly yet, may be me since I’m new to pellet grills, but I’d hope following their recipes it would come out right.

I purchased the pellet sensor and front shelf. Screws for the mounting bracket are very cheap and one of them stripped very easily and now I can’t remove it to install the shelf. Haven’t bothered with the pellet sensor.

Their customer support however is fantastic.

Grill works great. I really like the grill. Works well, and everything is easy to use. Packaging is well setup and easy to understand for the setup. You definitely need 2 people to setup the grill, so if you don’t have a second person get the assembly.

Wifi is awesome very responsive and great recipes. The 4 stars is because I purchased the extra shelf and had issues with the two bolts on the right side. The nutserts had not bound correctly. I was able to resolve the issue but I tinker a lot.

I would recommend loosening the bolts before assembling the grill to make sure the nutserts work correctly.

I decided to buy this Traeger Pro 780 based on the high number of good reviews that I read. I’ve used it now 3 or 4 times. Overall, it does a pretty good job. It’s simple to use, the Wifi setup was relatively straight-forward, and the instructions for putting it together were perfect.

The smoke that it puts out is the only reason I deducted a star on this review. It doesn’t put out as much smoke as I would like, and so my food doesn’t have quite the desired smoke flavor that I would like.

My solution for this is to set the temp very low at first (no more than 180), and keep it there for an hour or two (depending on what I’m cooking), and then turn it up to the desired temp (typically 250-275) for the remainder of the cook.

It may take a bit longer, but if you plan for it, you should be fine. It’s well-built, and I like the locking wheels. Although it’s an extra $60, definitely invest in the extra foldout shelf attachment.

It definitely makes it easier to be able to set food/cooking items there while cooking. I still prefer cooking on a traditional smoker, but this is great when you just don’t have the time to tend to the fire.

We received our grill with no warming rack. I ordered this one and it dropped right into the factory supports. The quality of materials and construction of the grill rack were excellent.

Second rack comes with mounting bracket and screws. Made of good quality, looks and feels sturdy. Make sure your rack comes with the bracket to mount on. Overall, this adds extra cooking area.

For starters I didn’t need the supplied brackets, they were already included with my traeger. Just what I was looking for. Perfect for fish

I have had this pit boss pellet smoker for 2 years and is the best outdoor cooking item I have ever owned. It’s almost idiot proof!! I had made the best baby back ribs, St. Louis ribs, beef ribs, brisket, pork loin, pork shoulder, whole chicken, chicken quarters, chicken breasts, chicken wings, pork chops, pork steaks, corn, asparagus, zucchini, squash, baked potatoes, then I ever did on a conventional grill or oven.

You will love it. I use it as much as I can and there are still so many possibilities. The food comes out amazing. Now this model is the perfect size for me and my wife, but I have cooked for 6 people at one time.

I recommend a digital meat thermometer which is necessary for cooking meats of any kind, in my opinion. Internal temperature is the key along with resting the meat when it comes off the grill. Remote thermometers are good to so you can monitor progress on your phone.

So far I have had no issue with any brand of pellets, but make sure you get as much of the pellet dust off before adding to the hopper. I use a 8 or 9 inch cheap mesh strainer to help get the fine pellet dust out before putting them in the hopper.

Also foil over the sliding fire broiler and bottom will help keep it cleaner. Make sure to cover after using especially it rain is expected. Also if you live in a very high humidity area you might want to empty the hopper of unused pellets after cooking.

They can and will swell up and turn to dust in high humidity over a period of time. This can clog the auger which feeds the pellets and is a real task to clean out. Pit Boss has a website with excellent recipes and recommendations for a variety of foods.

So that’s all I can think of now. Get it on sale while you can, you will love it!!.

Ordered this Pit Boss Pellet Grill for my husband for his birthday. The package was so heavy when it was shipped that the delivery guy slammed it down on the ground to put it down and damaged the grill.

When we discovered the damage we filed a case with Pit Boss hoping to send the old one back and get a new one. It took weeks of back and forth pictures, emails, and BS before they finally resolved the problem.

They sent a bunch of new replacement parts and expected my husband to repair the damaged grill himself. It’s now a month and a half after we bought the product and my husband has been outside for hours trying to repair it.

He has run into issues replacing the power cord and with stripped screws. It’s been a month and a half and we have yet to be able to use this grill at all. Pit Boss, you may have a great product here but we wouldn’t know because your ridiculous customer service and problem resolution policies have gotten in the way.

Don’t expect your customers to repair your product that was damaged in shipping. I don’t think we will buy from Pit Boss ever again.

We treated ourselves to this smoker when it came on sale, and have no regrets. We’re still figuring out how best to use it, since it’s out first smoker; the food is often done sooner than expected, and so it sometimes ends up over-done.

It’s a learning curve. The smoker doesn’t get five stars for two reasons. First, unpacking it is a pain. There’s nothing on the box about how best to open the box, and the information that most of the parts are inside the drum is in the instruction manual — which is inside the plastic bag wrapped around the drum, which can’t be removed except by moving the unexpectedly heavy drum.

Second and more importantly, the temperature control doesn’t offer fine enough temperature increments, especially at low temperatures; some of the temperatures required by the recipes in the manual are not available.

I purchased mine in the box. Brought it home and assembled it a couple hours not hard at all. I broke in the smoker an hour and a half with just heat and then 2 hours with smoke pellets. Called it a day.

The next day I used it grilled this couple of steaks couple of pork ribs wasn’t bad. heat seemed to be very consistent. The metal thickness is thicker than some of the name brand more expensive smokers.

Keeps the heat temp consistent. The smoker box at 10 lb is sufficient if you like doing multiple items in the smoker at different times. So changing smoke pellets is not all that big of a deal. The only reason I gave it four stars is because it’s not Bluetooth enabled, Other than that it has worked flawlessly the few weeks I’ve had it.

I have kept it low for the extra smoke I have taken it up to 550 and works great. The surprise to me was the cleaning cycle, of 25 minutes of burn time to help clean the grill and the smoker at the same time.

Is it worth the money? Yes for this type of smoker grill etc well worth the money, do I need the Bluetooth, absolutely not. So if you are a budget-minded person that really wants a smoker grill I would recommend this one, for the cost, the value, it is very well worth it.

So happy with this purchase! I was a little afraid of the learning curve but now that I have cooked several times on this grill my fears are gone. Easy setup, no cleaning to speak of as far as ash and laying down some tin foil on the drip tray takes care of that too.

I actually think this heats up faster than my old gas grill. For the price you can not beat it, yes the other big name grills have some options that this does not but no big deal. I picked up a wireless meat thermometer that connects to the phone and job done.

First couple of times we just did hamburgers, best ever! Cooked perfectly, no flare-ups, great taste and juicy for days. Last night I grabbed a couple of thick sliced pork chops, this was going to be the real test.

I love pork chops but on the regular grill they get dried out quick. This was pain free and they came out perfect, my wife ate hers so fast I don’t think she even tasted it.

Pretty impressed so far. I feel like it’s a little more than it’s worth but it’s solid and wasn’t too bad to put together. Do not tighten down all the legs to the body until after you get the bottom shelf on.

Otherwise things do not line up easily at all. And put only the bottom bolts in the outer shelf brackets first before attaching the shelf to the smoker body. It will make it easier. And do that BEFORE you put on the hopper/burn box.

Trust me. So far this has done everything we’ve asked of it with no fault of it’s own. We installed a thermometer in the lid and used it and probes to find this cooks around 30°F hotter at the surface than you set it, and that’s with the chimney full open and 95°F 5mph breeze Oklahoma day.

Overall not disappointed with this at all. Never owned one and have nothing to compare it to but like I said. It’s solid and does what you ask. Can’t ask for much more than that.
