20 Best Traditional Bow For Hunting (2023 Updated)

This bow is beautifully constructed, breaks down small enough to fit into a backpack and shoot very well. It’s a great entry level recurve bow that even lifelong archers will appreciate. It’s available in higher draw weights allowing one to hunt even the biggest north American game with this bow.

It is essentially a rebranded samick sage wich has been held in high regard for a couple years now. I highly recommend this product. It’s an excellent quality recurve bow at an excellent price.

Good quality recurve bow. I have been shooting since 1974. I choose the 40 pound draw bow, because my arms just cannot handle any more. I shoot my bow to keep my back muscles in shape. I Plus I really enjoy archery.

I just purchased the centrepoint aspen and completely amazed at the quality and performance. I am used to using a one piece recurve (Bear Grissly) that I had purchased in 1977. I used that bow for ages until I had to retire it.

I recently decided to get back into archery and researched bows for several weeks. I knew I wanted to stay with recurves but I really liked what I was reading about take down bows. It took me only a few minutes to get the bow ready for shooting.

I was very impressed with how smooth the bow drew and how quiet it was. I very much recommend this bow for intermediate archers. One small point. The finger tab sucks so get a good glove separately. I also purchased a separate arrow rest.

I bought this bow for my son’s birthday. It looks great and went together nicely. We have yet to use it as the string was missing. There doesn’t seem to be a size for the string anywhere (packaging, online, etc.

). Does anyone know what size of string to get? We are looking forward to using it.

Well pleased with this Bow, well made, very accurate. Had a small defect on the Handle riser below the grip, smaller than my fingernail, but great buy for the money. The shipping is a little slow, but with what’s going on in this country right now, it is understandable, have made several other purchases from Sportsman’s guide and am pleased with the quality of the products.

Will continue Purchasing as needed.

after the first 30 minutes the lower limb split, limb laminate peeled off . I will be returning it.

I had a friend purchase this bow in exchange for a new Bear Approach bow which I had purchased to hunt. Unfortunately, I was unable to use the Bear bow because the draw weight was too heavy for me to pull.

A friend agreed to purchase this Gen X bow because he had bought one for his daughter, she loved it. When he gave me this Gen X bow, I could see it was much longer than my Bear. Allegedly this bow is good for hunting, but the length is going to make it difficult while up in a tree, and I do not like the way it fits my hand.

I’m very upset because customer service will not take the bow back, so I’ll have to eat the cost. I’ll never buy a product site unseen, or word of mouth from a friend, lesson learned! I feel this bow is more of a competition shooting bow, not hunting.

Great starting bow. It is very durable and has been with me my entire archery journey thus far. My only complaint is that the string is starting to whether a little but I have been using it for a long time.

No string is indestructible. I never had a moment where I shot and the problem was my bow. This is super crucial as archers already have enough to worry about.

What a great bow!!! My daughter is loving it and Im even able to use it. It gives us a chance to spend time together. I wouldnt consider it a beginner/ childs bow. The draw weight is adjustable but this is more of a secondary level bow.

We got ours and every time my son and I tried to shoot, the arrows would get caught in the string and go straight to the ground, they were going nowhere. Another issue is the tension on the string is not tight enough at all.

We were ready to return it but decided to look and see if there was anything we could do to make it better, if your willing to do that also, you’ll get better results. Here is what we did, tightened the string tremendously but looping the ends through one another several times, then attaching them back,now it goes over 25 yards easy, then we got better arrows.

I highly recommend getting your own arrows, makes a huge difference too. Now its a pretty decent bow. I don’t know if they will all have the same problems as ours did, but if you get one and it does, try what we did, instead of going through the hassle of a return.

This is a pretty well made bow for the price and a good introduction to archery for a child, perhaps six to twelve. It is certainly not a power-house of a bow and only good for about a ten yard range.

With a 20lb pull it may be a struggle for a younger archer and yet too light as a child grows older. The accessories are adequate but would recommend buying additional arrows at the time of purchase.

All in all I’d give this bow a 9 out of 10 with the caveat that it is a child’s bow made for a youth entry level shooter. Also keep in mind that despite the lack of power this bow is not a toy and capable of serious injury if not used with adult supervision.

I don’t have a lot of input since I’m new to archery and this is my first bow. That being said, I’m impressed with it. For someone that has no experience and no upper body strength, it’s easy to shoot with the 25-pound draw weight.

It’s the right fit for me and for what I wanted out of my first bow. Several of my family members who have archery experience have also been impressed with it, so I’d say that’s a good sign. I’d recommend this to anyone looking to get into the sport or to anyone looking to upgrade from a youth bow to something a little more sturdy.

You can add accessories, change the limbs, or just shoot it as is. You could shoot in club meets and get your form down and you can improve, upgrade your string, and use it as a springboard to something better.

Or you can just shoot targets in your backyard for a longtime and get low poundage limbs for your kids. Nice finish on the wood, wonderful grip. I am a 67 year old man and got a 28# 62″ bow. I know you can shoot indoor competitions with this – have not tried outside distances yet.

I plan to upgrade the string, get a better 3 under tab and get arrows as closely matched as I can.

Bear Archery has a winner here! Even at 35#, this Montana shoots so well for me, I may just lay down my other recurves and longbows and make this my primary hunting bow with 2 blade broadheads! Easy on the shoulder, yet still plenty of power for deer at under 25 yards.

Great cast, lightweight, no handshock, well thought out design (I believe Neil Brice at Bear designed this, but I may be wrong)! Either way, it shoots as well or better than many custom longbows costing twice as much.

this is my 3rd Montana with quality issues in the last 2 weeks. First had delaminating limbs. Second had a giant gouge in the limb, the third came with a string made by a novice. The serving has big loose spots.

If Bear or Cabelas reads this and fixes the problem, it will go a long way, but I’m just tired of these quality issues. When I can get my arrows to nock on this bow, it shoots decently. I’ve shot a number of bows, and this one would be worth the money if they weren’t having such issues.

It has a fair amount of hand shock. The arrow rest is noisy rubbing the arrows, but well made.

Owned for 3 years now, replaced the string once besides that it’s in great shape. The string slap on your arm is extreme so a wrist guard will be a must. 50 pound draw weight so not great for beginners or youth.

Overall 3 start, buy 4 stars for the bow alone. Did not include instructions on putting the bow together so we did not know which arm, or string end, went to the upper and lower riser. There is no explanation what the holes in the Riser are for.

The case, quiver, arm guard are “ok” for beginner use but very basic. The bow stringer is very useful once adjusted for the archers height. Suggest you order more targets and get a hay bale (or order a quality target) for longer use.

1 target lasts a day.

My son was thrilled that Santa brought the bow and arrows he’d put on his list. We went out for target practice Christmas afternoon and within 20 minutes, two of the three arrows were useless. The nocks, the slotted plastic tips at end of the arrows that snap onto the string and hold the arrow in position, were brokwn off.

I’m not sure whether to return the whole kit at this point. The nocks should be threaded and replacable, they are not. The bow is beautiful and appears to be sturdy but I wouldn’t recommend this purchase.

My daughter, 12 years old & average build, received this as a Christmas gift. She had taken a few archery day camps and wanted to keep practicing. We went to a large national chain store, geared more to adult hunters, and they outfitted her with a 62″ 30 lb.

bow that was simply too hard for her to repetitively pull. Let’s just say, after having spent all her energy on the first 3-4 arrows, it’s unnerving to be standing next to a shaky 12 year old with an arrow nocked, drawn 4/5 the way back, and unable to hold the pointy end steady.

Fortuitously an LLBean email highlighting this archery set hit my inbox. I bought her the 20# draw bow and 2 extra sets of arrows. This is perfect! Far more comfortable, she can now focus on form and accuracy and really enjoys having the extra arrows so that she can shoot more and easter-egg hunt arrows less.

The day camps run about 4 hours and she’s easily able to shoot the entire time with this 20# draw. Quality – for a starter set, this is excellent! Having spent a few hours in that large national chain store, I can attest that this set is the equal of their midrange equipment and appreciably less expensive (anecdotally about 25-30% less).

Function – except the quiver, all aspects of this set are excellent. The recurve bow is quite well made and its 3 parts are easily assembled. Stringing the bow is a bit tricky but after a few tries my daughter now is an expert.

At the last archery day camp she was helping the other archers string their bows. The case is especially nice, and provides the necessary storage for the set and makes traveling back-n-forth to camp quite easy.

The arrows are great practice arrows but with just 3 of them it quickly becomes tedious retrieving them. So I bought 2 additional sets (6 arrows per set). Improvements – as I alluded to, the quiver is lacking primarily due to its shortness.

The arrows easily topple out of it. NOT A BIG DEAL for sure, I just wanted to explain my earlier comment. Several reviewers indicate that their archer quickly outgrew this set. I too was worried about that until I learned a bit more about how recurve bows work.

Now I would argue that jumping from this set to one that has 50% greater draw (eg. 29lb) isn’t necessary for “tweens” or younger teens. With a recurve bow, as kids grow and their draw length increases (the distance from outstretched hand holding bow to fingers pulling the string), the draw weight naturally increases because the archer just simply pulls the string back further to accommodate their growing bodies.

This bow, although it says 20lb, simply will give / flex a little more to accommodate the increased draw length. The result is the archer will be able to pull to say 24-26 lbs on this same bow, because it’s a recurve bow, all the while maintaining excellent control in both form and accuracy.

Alternatively, if you like living on the edge, your archer could quickly jump to that heavier 29 lbs and spend more time making you nervous with that shaky pointy end. For those with mid teens or older, or younger kids that are particular strong, the 29 lb is probably the way to go all for the same reasons I mentioned above.

While your archer may only pull, say for example 26 lbs comfortably, then the larger bow would simply accommodate that by flexing less. If your archer stays within their draw weight comfort zone and doesn’t try to over pull, then they’ll still be able to focus on form and accuracy.

So why didn’t I leave my 12 year old archer with the 30 lb bow? She wasn’t able to get the bow to flex enough that the arrow would make it to the target (about 30′ away) with enough force to penetrate the target.

If you watch the video, which is in slow motion, please note how much the pointy end moves around as my archer focuses on the stationary target. She’s gotten much better with practice but consider how much more movement would result if I’d quickly jumped her up to the next size bow? My apologies for how long the video runs.

I purchased this because I wanted to try shooting recurve. Ive been a compound shooter my whole life. This is an excellent first bow. I brought it out to a local archery range and had some seasoned shooters take a look at it.

they were very impressed. For the price you cant beat the quality. With some simple tweaks I easily got this bow shooting true. The only issues I have noticed is the screw inserts that are in the bow for adding a quiver or sight are not anchored into the wood.

the inserts pop right out. I added a bit of glue to them and they stick just fine. If you are looking for an introductory bow to get into traditional shooting I would recommend this. Tip. Remove the pads that are on the arrow shelf and replace with soft velcro or beaver hair.

Add string silencers.

I bought this bow to replace my 36lb Greentree Recurve bow. I caught the previous deal for a little lower!! I am one happy Warden recurve bow owner! This bow is very nice out the box y’all! I purchased the 45ib version and the craftsmanship is top notch! I went ahead and replaced the original string with fast-flight Flemish strings and purchased some GT 500 traditional fletched arrows; however, I already had some Victory “Gamer” all silver, 500 spine feather fletched arrows that was suppose to be movie replica arrows from the “hunger games”.

Let me tell you- these arrows matched up very nice with my Warden recurve! I am having so much fun! Also, the limbs from my Greentree recurve fits my Warden perfectly! I now have 36lb limbs and 45lb limbs.

I highly recommend this recurve bow for beginners on up!.
