This is how Iâve been slaying with it: been fishing the Newport Harbor in Southern California. I troll it behind my petal kayak at just over 2 mph where the rod tip wiggles the most = maximum action.
Iâve caught bass of all kinds with it, a few barracuda, and the halibut kill this thing during low slack tide when it can reach closer to the bottom. I have found that the 8 foot swim depth is pretty accurate while trolling it.
I use it every time I go out and I always catch at least something on it. I pair this with another lure of some kind, but itâs always on my trolling line when I am heading out to a spot or coming back.
I can only speak for the water I fish, but out here, this thing catches fish. Iâve had success with the black and white, but my best success with the sardine and blue mackerel. Been doing really well with the sardine 5 1/2 inch version too.
Idk if itâs the feather on the trailing hook, the subtle wiggle action when you slowly retrieve between jerks, or that nice rattle but this lure works for EVERYTHING. Iâve caught large mouth, smallmouth, walleye, pickerel, bullhead and perch with these guys.
Even got lucky enough to snag a snapping turtle once while jerking the bait along through the water ( got that lure back too lol). Just a few examples shown below with hooks in the mouth but you get the picture.
Great lure love using black and sliver in river and creek scenarios, yellow perch any pond you fish with perch in it. Also, Iâll have to wait till next year to find out for sure but I bet the 6âs in rainbow trout color will smash the stockies in the streams I fish in upstate NY!.

Iâve been using this lure for a while now and it works very well. Will catch almost all species of gamefish, from pickerel to pike to bass. As long as they can get their mouth on it. Which is the other good thing about this lure.
At around 3. 5 inches long, it is smaller then most spooks and topwater, which allows for a smaller profile. This means you can still catch smaller fish (Iâve even caught bass that are only around a pound), but it still works great for bigger fish and is great when downsizing.
Very realistic walking action, and high quality lure. Paint will wear overtime if pickerel or pike are hitting it, but thatâs expected due to their teeth. the only time Iâve had to use a replacement is when Iâve lost the lure, no issues with hooks or lure breaking.

Typical 4 day delivery. Received the name brand product I ordered. No real deal on the price. Haven’t fished with these lures yet but the review is really for the merchant and not the lures. If you want to know about WP lures, they work (I’ve caught 3-4 lb bass with them).
Use them in open water (they are NOT weedless) when slightly windy or in choppy water, vary the size by the amount of wind/chop and the size of the fish known to be there. The research I found recommended solid colors (white, black, or bone) or translucent (bluegill or munky butt) of which I have only fished the colors I bought.
Vary the size by the known size of the fish in the area (I bought 75 because I already own 90 & 130) but 110 is the most common size fished for LM bass.
I was never a top water type of guy. I know it is very exciting when they nail one. But I never had much success with them. But late last year I bought a cheap knock-off from a big chair retailer and I still didn’t catch anything with it.
I then was placing an order this past winter and these were on sale. I was told if you only own one, make it all black. It contrasts the top of the water and they can see it best. So I got the loon. Let’s just say, so far this year I have caught more fish on this lure than any other lure I use.
Including Ned rigs that catch everything. Or a wacky rig. And just yesterday I caught my PB largemouth bass with it. To say I am a believer would be an understatement. I have occasionally tried the cheap knock-off and never hooked up.
Had just one go after it. The noise it made is totally different than this one. And I think that is the difference. I ended up losing that knock-off and I will not replace it with that brand. I will get another River2Seas.
Why mess with what works? My PB I caught was 4 pounds 4 ounces and 22 inches. Now for you southern folks that is just an average bass. But for me in PA, it is a bigin. At least in my area. Do yourself a favor and get this lure.
If you can only get one, get the loon. It simply catches fish.

I always have it one me as a lucky charm! It’s action is beautiful and perfect as expected from Rapala and always produced fish throughout the day.
And can be used for any tactic like trolling and casting. For patterns I have Silver, Blue, Yellow Perch, and Gold Plated Fluorescent Red. All are very good patterns, I would recommend Silver for sunny days, Orange for cloudy days, and any natural pattern at any time.
For sizes I’ve always used 4-3/8″ and up to 7″ for Pike, Walleye, Bass, and Musky. I don’t really recommend using any smaller as they become very light and hard to cast in the wind, unless your fishing for Crappie and all other species of Panfish.
I personally would recommend buying three patterns for each light level, one bright neon for cloudy days, one shiny/reflective for sunny days, and one natural for any other times. The only downside to this bait is the price.
It may seem like a pinch for the price but it is easily one of the greatest investments I’ve ever made. I have hundreds of lures and this is still my number 1! Thanks Rapala for another beautiful bait, that has caught me countless fish.

The Rapala floater has caught lots of fish for me all over North America. Most notably I have caught hundreds of pike with them over the decades (using the larger sizes and primarily standard/common colors).
I mostly use them on topwater, though a faster retrieve causing them to run a foot or two deep can work great, too. Again, I have caught hundreds of grayling in Alaska and the Yukon as well, using the 3 and 5 centimeter sizes — for some reason the grayling can not resist the gold color on a sunny day.
As a note, the Countdown and sinking models work fantastically in the Northwoods on walleyes, especially starting about an hour before sunset. On big lakes, let them get deep. Experiment with the colors.
If a lake has perch or bass, try those patterns for sure.

I must confess, I purchased a half dozen of these bad boys when they launched. The need to re-up hasn’t come around, yet. With that said, this bait calls in some fish! Superb walk the dog action. You can tell some time was spent dialing in the design.
My only complaints are the size, and hooks. Here in Florida, I couldn’t tell you how many 1lb largemouth have exploded on a 6″ spook. The hound certainly doesn’t discriminate catching small fish with its small profile.
It does fool the big ladies, but for a topwater plug I feel it should be larger. For a smaller topwater I suppose it makes sense to use lighter wire hooks. The ones from the first run I purchased had really light hooks and they bent easily, even on light rods, line, and drag.
Maybe this has changed since the launch? Most hard baits require treble hook upgrades anyway, and for the price point the hound still overs lots of value, and catches a ton of fish. #flobass.
It catches fish for sure. Three the first time out with it. So for sure this dawg will hunt. Very easy to walk , it casts very well. Itâs most definitely gonna be my go to top water walking bait. I probably want use any other again.
So if your looking to change things up. You should definitely try this hound out. You will not be let down. It was only a few squealer bass I hooked up on. More time on the lake it should put quality fish in the boat.

I bought my first Megabass PopX 2 or 3 years ago. I thought this type of lure was ugly and looked rather deformed. One 28 degree February morning a friend scoffed at my topwater lure tangling from my bait cast rod.

I’ve used the DT series baits for several years now. Mostly DT 6 and 10. But a while ago I wrote the Rapala company to tell them how amazing these crank baits are. They have even out fished live bait.

I bought this frog 2 days ago and fished it yesterday, Shimano Citica, 12lb Basspro Excel line. Confession: Although it’s been 25 years, I’ve had issues with Strike King discontinuing the original Grass Frog.
After some internal therapy I decided to try a new type of Frog. I’ve never been fond on the rubber string legs a frog but they’ve all pretty much got them so they must work. Yesterday was a cloudy morning, slight breeze, great frogging weather.
Our neighborhood pond is starting to get mossy so this bait was perfect. It’s very weedless, always lands belly down and has great action. I caught 5 bass in a fairly short time and had a great morning.
