20 Best Topcoat For Chalk Paint (2023 Updated)

Used this to paint a vanity/dressing table that was previously painted black. Had to do 2 coats even though the instructions said paint is designed to be one coat. It was still slightly streaky after two but I was painting over a dark color so I let it go.

I go to use the vanity over 24 hours later and get a small spot of face cream on it that leaves an oil stain. I try to blot it up with mild soap and water and the paint starts coming off around the spot.

Not only is this paint a waste of money but I wasted hours of my time using it on my project just for it to immediately fail.

Just Awful. I am no stranger to chalk paint. I have many projects under my belt and this is without a doubt the worst product I’ve used. It is SO runny and thin. I had to apply FOUR coats of this paint on WHITE cabinets.

If a paint can’t cover white easily you know it’s bad. I hate that I just wasted my entire weekend only to have to turn around and redo them. I never leave bad reviews so please take caution before spending your money on this.

Obsessed with this chalked paint! Once you give it a good stir, the consistency is great and goes on so smooth. Yep coats and your project looks amazing. It also stands really well so anytime I want to go for a more distressed look, I sand the edges and corners and it adds so much more character.

The matte finish is also so buttery smooth and the paint comes in so many colours!.

Im elated this worked beautifully! I am doing a ton of remodeling and working on several pieces of furniture. Im new to chalk paint. I did sand the secretary desk I used the Aegean Coral on. The color is beautiful, I love it.

The product spread and coverage was great. I was very happy with this product. The girl at Home Depot recommended sealing it with a Polyurethane clear coat matte finish. I loved the texture but the poly made it cloudy.

It ruined my piece. Ugh. So I researched and found a product you can buy in the states so I found the Retique it brand has the same Poly Acrylic that the product I want has which isn’t the same as Polyurethane.

So when I finish my table and use their brand sealer I will post and let you know how it works. Hoping it delivers as promised. This is getting exhausting and expensive when something doesn’t turn out right.

Dont use cheap brands, you get what you pay for. I used Home Decor chalk and now I have to resand and repaint 😭.

I love this stuff! I wish had tried this brand earlier. I painted my kitchen cabinets with another chaulk paint and it is nowhere comparable with this. I just painted a wooden door with this paint and I couldn’t believe how smooth and even the coverage was.

I probably could have used only one coat. Two will definately do it. It dries really fast so you don’t have to wait hours to apply another coat. I will never use another chaulk paint again!.

Ive used this before and I love it! Takes less for better coverage than anything else Ive used. Wears well on furniture of any kind. Makes the cheapest furniture look high end!

This product arrived faster than predicted and was packaged efficiently and safely. The product itself is exactly what I was looking for my desk makeover, it has a moderate sheen than can be toned down with some fine grit and the final product left smooth coating over general finish gel stain.

We had one window on a job that was supposed to be stained. One of my guys didn’t realize that because all the other windows on the project were being done with just flat-out-flat on bare wood. So he went ahead and put flat-out-flat on all the windows before i had a chance to stain that one.

When it came time to put the stain on, i went right ahead and was very confused as to why the stain wasn’t absorbing. I took my gloves off and rubbed the wood and realized that it already had a coat or two of flat-out-flat on it.

I am a carpenter with a couple decades of experience with woodworking and i didn’t realize the stuff was there until i touched it. This should give you an idea of how flat it is. I also like that, although General Finishes does not tout its eco-grooviness in any way, Flat-Out-Flat is pretty non-toxic stuff.

A deep dive into the MSDS sent up no red flags for me, which is rare for products that aren’t explicitly made for chemically sensitive people.

This is my first Waterbased (WB) poly experience. THis is finish for a tool chest for under the workbench using a very nice birdseye maple for the drawer fronts. But its winter, cold and damp, and I could not supply adequate ventilation, so I opted for the wife-friendly WB Poly.

I expected a chatoyant “pop” of the highly figured grain. I don’t believe that possible (at least to the extent of using oil based finish) with this product. For this wood, on this project, it did not yield the results an oil based “varnish” finish would have: warm, deep, and popping grain.

Instead, it is crystal clear, no darkening (or wetting) and no dimension to the grain, looks and feels a bit like plastic finish. I can’t fault the finish for that, it is the indian, not the arrow, this time.

APPLICATION: Product is thick and white like milk, with a subtle blue cast. I used a synthetic brush, then, on the third coat, switched to foam brush. Foam worked better, with a light to moderate pressure and fully loaded brush.

Product left minor streaks, that partially flowed out with both brushes. Surface was full of tiny bubbles that disappeared while drying. Product had about a 1 1/2 minute working time after first brush.

I sanded well P320 between coats. Product powdered nicely with sanding. Final finish has some minor streaking, no bubbles and from a foot away looks pretty nice, if you like your figured wood to be coated in clear plastic.

Practice on some plywood to fond the right pressure, and load the brush. Minimize brush strokes. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this product (WB Poly) on painted cabinets, toys or wooden fixtures but will never again use it on a figured wood project.

It did what it was designed for, so I bumped it up a star. Wish I could have waited for warmer weather. and adequate ventilation.

This is the second project I’m using this product on. It does exactly what it says it will do. The first project had several pieces I painted a very pale gray. With this top coat, the appearance was just slightly darker.

They did disclose if using on bright white or very light colors, a yellowish hue will be seen. However, it is barely noticeable. The second project was a dark blue (more royal blue) desk. Im thrilled with how both projects came out! I highly recommend this top coat!.

1st, I have 40+ yrs of detail, paint/restoration experience…. The product is ok. Good for a quick mediocre shine, however there is “0” paint protection. This product washes off with car wash and water?!!! Yes soap is required to remove road dirt and grime.

And get the vehicle clean. Works great on vinyl, and interior parts, at $100/ gal it’s just too expensive for that use. There are much less expensive other out performing products on the market. Save your hard earned $$$ & time.

A little research will give you better results for less. Personal note; Ordered the gallon size first because I/we do a lot of wash & polish work (vehicle, boat, aircraft). 1st bottle showed delivery in tracking, but no box.

Checked video, nope nada. Mfg. Accused us of being liars (4 people)?! LOL they finally agreed to send another only if it was signed for, whatever. Anyway they were not customer service friendly by any means.

Just food for thought before ordering.

This stuff is GREAT and you will know it the second you put the first wipe on,,,, Feel the paint how slick it becomes and the depth of the shine! I hardly have to wash the truck any more – dirt don’t stick like it used to!!!! AND,,, I still don’t have to really wash it as there is so little dirt i can just wipe it off with another coat which makes it even slicker! Unless you live in a mud puddle or salt mine and your paint is in pretty good shape, you;ll love F11.

!!! But if your blue paint looks white from fade and weather you may not get the same depth in the shine but a car is that neglected is ready for the heap anyway!!! And hey I already bought mine so I don’t get a discount or anything for saying this,, and I wouldn’t if it didn’t work,,, It works and you won’t be disappointed! No one can afford to waste money esp.

Today I decided it was time to fire up the Kubota BX2380 and pull it out of the garage and give it some Topcoat F11 love before winter surprised us. I’ve been using F11 on my Kubota from the first fall that I got it.

It’s the easiest and best product that I’ve used. It goes on easy and with very little effort you can buff it it out to a great shine. Today I tried using it on all the areas of the BX2380. I used it on the trim, tractor body panels, tractor windows inside and outside, back blade and snowblower! It turned out outstanding! I can’t believe how easy it is to use and get a great shine without struggling.

I’d highly recommend Topcoat F11!.

I’ve been using F 11 on my motorcycles for almost 9 years now. The first time I used F 11 was about four years ago on my 2013 Harley Davidson Fat Boy. I take very good care of my motorcycle but you could tell at the time that it was 5 1/2 years old because of the swirl marks on the fuel tank and fenders.

The first time I applied the F11 after a wash I was absolutely blown away by the results. The shine on and the reflection off of the painted surfaces as well as the chrome, leather and plastic/rubber was unbelievable! I also purchased a 2020 Harley Street Glide Special with a matte finish… Well I know matte finishes traditionally are not supposed to look shiny.

F 11 almost makes the matte finished surface look “wet” and extremely clean! If you ride your motorcycle it’s gonna get dirty… It’s something that just cannot be avoided. The coating of F 11, which is on every surface of my motorcycles makes cleaning the bike a breeze! I would highly recommend F11 to anyone who has a motorcycle or any vehicle that they want to take care of.

I purchased F11 2 years ago, and it was wonderful. I tried anther company last year, The Last Coat, and it worked about 1/2 of what the F11 does. I live on a dirt road in the boonies and with F11 the dust DID NOT stick to the back of my car hardly at all.

With the competitor it did. Bugs along the river roads are hit by the thousands, and with F11 they wipe off once they get wet. Bird **** is the same. With the competitor I had to scrub them off still.

I live in the trees, so tree sap is ****** with the road dust. When it rains, the sap and dust run off and it is mostly clean at end of the storm. Shine and the slickness is GREAT !! You will find that out when you sit the bottle down on what you have coated and it slides off and hits the ground.

I read a lot of unhappy people’s claims and I would bet they didn’t clean the old products OFF the paint before they added a coat of F11. I am getting ready in a few minutes to order more for this Summer and fall.

Girl I work with and her husband uses it on their NEW HARLEY and they seem to love it also. I have no bad review. It is the BEST thing I have used sense there was a product advertised on tv called Dura Shine !!! Had new headlights put in my Dodge Nitro and they still look new after 2 years.

I still use the F11 on the headlights even though it should be too old. My wife loves to keep her Subaru headlights clean with F11 also.

In 2019 I purchase a used 2016 Mercedes GL 450 that was a dealer demo with very low miles. Dealer cars are notoriously run over and over through the dealer car wash which puts a great amount of fine swirl scratches in the paint.

I had used F11 on the previous vehicle I traded and the paint was like new, so new in fact, the dealer thought I had a custom paint job done. I knew I had my work cut out for me with this new one and had clay bar kit ready to go.

The plan was do the clay bar treatment and then finish with F11. I reached out to the F11 people and explained what I needed to do and if they had any suggestions. They recommended I use the F11 as my lubricant for the clay treatment and save a huge amount of time.

I did and the finished product was incredible. After owning for a few years I have continued with the F11 and the paint has never looked better. Thanks guys, I am customer for life. See the amazing pictures of how it looks today treating it for the last 3 years.

This product worked fine. The color was good, but the coverage was thin. The spray nozzle worked consistently but did clog and spew. The lid was very hard to open. Probably will not use again or if I do I will choose a smaller project, like a frame, verses a piece of furniture, which is what I was painting for this project.

Coats evenly and the color comes out as the cap color of the can. Has a chalky finish with no glare. Perfect for wedding DIYs! I used it to spray paint vases and covered the vase entirely and the colors under didn’t show at all! Just make sure not to spray too close or keep the spray nosel hoovering over the same area too long or the paint will run.

I have used Krylon spray paint many times for different projects. This is my first time using chalky finish. Very happy with the results. Covers well, easy to spray. Will definitely use this again. Recommended.

I purchased this topcoat for an acrylic painting I was working on that dried really flat and needed a glossy pop! I did some research online and found that the Deco Art Clear Pouring Topcoat might do just the trick.

This topcoat is meant to be poured over your artwork to create an even glaze. I used it a little differently, where I poured and also brushed it around because I wanted some texture. If you do it this way at work in small areas as the topcoat gets pretty tacky quickly.

Overall it created a great shine on my piece. I’ll definitely try it again on a smaller work following the full directions.

I didn’t really like this product. The first time I used it, I followed the directions and ended up with thick runs and drips on the canvas. The second time I used it, I decided to use a brush and brush it out evenly across the canvas.

This didn’t work either as the product didn’t seem to like being worked and ended up drying with thousands of microbubbles in the finish. Overall, I wasn’t impressed or happy with it and ended up buying a different brand of varnish for my paintings that works much better.

I bought this to give my pour paint a high gloss. Felt it would be cheaper then epoxy. I felt it worked ok. I poured on my dry paint seen it has a white color which does dry clear. Felt it is thick and not easy to move as a ready to pour paint should.

Gloss not as good as epoxy. Im sticking with epoxy for my paintings.

People have mentioned in reviews that white paint has turned yellow. It’s technically not the sealer it’s actually the tannins in the wood (google it) that are pulled through the paint. If you are painting a piece of furniture pale you need to do a layer of oil based undercoat to block tannins from bleeding through.

You also need to allow all paint to cure for at least 24hours before applying a sealer, freshly dried paint can’t be sealed straight away, it will lift that paint. So many people leave negative reviews because it’s actually their inexperience that causes issues.

I have been painting furniture full time for 8 years and this product when used correctly is amazing. But it’s only flaw is that you should never leave any areas thick, you want a thin layer as it will go white on dark colours or yellow on pale colours in the thick areas.

But a thin layer will never go yellow all over that is absolutely tannins. If you are using it for the first time get a scrap piece of wood and paint it and try it out first don’t blame products for your failure.

Terrible coverage. Don’t believe when someone tells you no need to sand your furniture. We did prep and sand and it still took several coats. Let dry as instructed and tried to put the aged glaze on.

Paint came right off. Same thing happened when we put on the sealer. Paint came off on places. Followed directions so I know it wasn’t the problem. Very dissatisfied with this product.

This product maintains the integrity and colour of the original paint which is exactly what I wanted but didn’t really believe I would get. I don’t enjoy doing DIY, particularly loathe painting, and I am sensitive to many chemicals, developing headaches etc when exposed to them for even short periods.

So with enforced time at home and no work to use as an excuse for the terribly neglected hall and stairs, I started searching for something that would not only be as safe as possible for the dog, children and myself but would still achieve that effortlessly stylish look most grown ups to have in their homes.

After a ridiculously brief discussion (I played the cleaning and cooking twenty times a day card), we went with black chalk paint and I quickly realised we needed a lacquer of some sort or I would need to sell the house or get rid of my entire family, dog included (no exaggeration).

This product has saved my family from either succumbing to extinction-by-mother and even though there is a smell, I have had little side effects. It also looks incredible. It’s not shiny like traditional varnish which I only briefly considered (hoping the heavy footed in my family might slide to their deserved doom).

Unlike most products which claim heaven and earth and deliver rain and dirt, this miracle product delivers.

It is a good but very sensitive product, and dry very quickly. I find out some tips from experience: 1. Better make sections when applying it on the surface. Don’t try to cover all and then retouch it.

It will dry very quickly and not able to spread evenly. 2. Less is more. Once it is fully dried. It is solid. I would suggest wait around 24 hrs to do the second coat.

This product did not disappoint. The applying of the lacquer onto the frame was great and made it really easy to use. Would definitely recommend. Safely packaged, very secure with clips on tin, bubble wrap and cardboard within the parcel reducing movement.

The color is kind of half way between brick red and mauve. The color looks a lot lighter from any angle other then straight on. It looks pastel, but if you are looking at it straight on then you get the nice pigmentation.

I found that it was easy to work with. My mom and I played a lot with this paint and some others. I used it with a different chalk matte finish but also some indoor / outdoor acrylic paint and it worked well with both.

I did some blending where you could hardly tell where one paint stopped and another started and my mom painted a large tv tray with one color and then the other and once it dried it almost looked like a wood grain.

The one thing I want to warn you about is the smell, once you stir it up, it smells like moldy wood. It was disgusting for a little while, but I adapted to it quickly and couldn’t notice after I got started, but my mom walked through the room again a few hours after we finished and she said she could still smell it.

I used this paint on a vintage nightstand. It was sitting in the attic and belonged to my Great Grandmother. I always admired it and finally decided to give it a bit of TLC. I had read that Chalk paint was not only easy to use but I had also seen videos of Joanna Gaines making it look so easy.

I selected the ‘Rainy Days’ color and it did not disappoint. The best part of this paint is that it doesn’t need any preparing of the wood; no staining, no primer, just clean it off and do it. and that’s what I did.

I set out with paint brushes, a roller and a sponge brush. I started painting with the brush around the ornate pieces and then used the roller on the larger surfaces. It was transforming into a beautiful piece before my eyes.

The chalk paint went on easily and provided full coverage on the first pass. The bonus was how beautiful the paint is, how impressive the quality and how quickly it dried! I have no doubt this paint is the perfect paint and can’t wait to use it on my next project.

I love how Joanna has made it so easy to use this chalk paint. Yes I love her shows and she makes it look so easy, well she made her paint very easy to use too! I love that I really don’t have to sand down my furniture in order for the paint to take.

Just a slight sanding will do or not even sanding at all. The paint is so beautiful, I painted an old rocking chair my son had in his room and it made the chair come to life! I only needed 2 coats to get the job done! I love it!!!! I will be buying more colors and refinishing some of my old furniture I have at home!.

I got the Magnolia Home By Joanna Gaines paint chalk style through the tryit sampling community. This paint so was easy to use and had a beautiful color. I got the rose colored paint. I used mine to make a welcome sign for the outside of the front door of my house.

The paint went on easy and didn’t gloop. The chalk style made it easy to decorate after I painted it and personalize. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a chalk style paint.

I’m no DIY pro by any means, but I was very impressed with myself with the living room furniture that I had painted with the Hemway paint. It was effortless, no paint drip. The paint is so easy to use that I painted and varnished 3 living room furniture in a matter of hours.

The paint dries really quickly. I love this paint and I’m looking forward to revamping other furniture in my house. I will most definitely recommend this paint. To place an order was very easy and I received my order within a couple of days.

Badger tried and came close. It will spray a fairly fine line for the price. I have bought 6 badger airbrushes in the last 2 years. Every single one has a warped and twisted finger rest. the trigger action is not smooth on any of them and the high roller trigger some people can not stand.

Then there is the USELESS PAC valve, mine came bent on 2 AB’s out of 2. They do not work well if at all, they will NOT shut air off. If you even breath on it it will change from where you set it. I had to throw my originals out and put a stainless steel screws in place, I rounded the threaded tip, so it would seat and seal properly when closed and added a cheap Cig lighter flint spring to add tension and hold setting better.

Then there is the CHEAP plastic paint cup lids and plastic boxes that barely have enough room for the airbrush, let alone any extra parts. If you want a real High Quality Extreme airbrush, Buy a H and S Infinity.

Thought unfinished wood would be perfect for this paint. Got the satin so I wouldn’t have to wax it. I was assured by the store that I would need a quart for this little project. After I paid about $50 for one quart, the staff person said “you will want to sand and prime it first.

” Huh??? I thought that was the point of this paint?? Well, I didn’t sand or prine and it covered perfectly and looks great with 2 coats. Didnt use even a quarter of the can. Decided to use it on a 1940s nightstand.

Just had an old stain on it. Ink, water stains…needed a recovery. Cleaned with detergent and wiped clean to dry. Paint WILL NOT COVER. All the ink doodles, water stains, everything shows through after 3 coats.

I wanted to paint an IKEA bare pine fold-down desk. I used this alongside clear wax and black wax to recreate the ‘warehouse look’ from one of Annie Sloanes tutorial videos. Worked perfectly and I am extremely pleased with the results.

The paint is very thick so coverage is great. In the summer it would probably need watering down a little. The colour is beautiful and I was almost tempted to leave it unfinished!.

I got a great color on the wall. The paint does not leave a bad smell after painting. It dries quickly. A pleasure to work with products from La Di Da! I highly recommend it!

They tell you to stir it well and apply thin coats. Makes sense. What they don’t tell you is that what you buy is so THICK that it will be almost dry before you can apply properly. And if you dare to smooth it out.

you end up with a lumpy surface. Sure you can dilute it. but they should tell you that you will need to add LOTS OF WATER to make it spreadable. They don’t mention that. Just “apply thin coats”. Sounds so easy.

Oh, and by the way it isn’t clear. goes on yellow over my white (annie sloan painted) table. Now I am sanding it off and starting over-with a different product.

Easy to apply. The lacquer did encourage bleed through of wood stain on some areas through the chalk paint (which was stated on the tin) but another application of chalk paint counteracted this.

Have bought a 2nd ton of this as I’m so impressed by the first tin. Easy to apply, dries rapidly, leaves a nice hard-wearing finish and easy to clean the brush afterwards.

Have only used it on a small area for now but it seems to do the job. I will probably use some gloves next time to move the item after waxing as it is very greasy of course. It probably needs a little bit of time to settle so best not to touch it after wiping it with the cloth.

Best company for doing up furniture supplies. Had an old faux leather foot stool and decided to give it some life. I bought both chalk paint and chalk paint wax from this amazing small business and it came out beautifully! I would recommend buying the wax brushes from here too, I made the silly mistake of not doing it and it took a lot longer!.

Al principio parecía que iba bien, oscureció y abrillantó la pintura. El problema surgió cuando empezó a secarse, el mueble quedó con manchas blanquecinas, perdió la uniformidad del color (azul intenso).

Después del trabajo de decapado, lijado y pintado, tengo la sensación de que la cera echó a perder todo mi trabajo.
