20 Best Tool For Cutting Drywall (2023 Updated)

Cutout tool came with switch that was not positive on/off. Then would intermittently cut out. Customer warranty support was outstanding. I have been buying DeWalt for many years once committed to the batteries! This is the first product I have had any problem with at all.

I was shipped a prepaid label to return it and was expecting 2 or 3 weeks lead time. In fact I got a brand new item in return within a week. Excellent!.

Tool comes in handy when working on multiple drywall cutouts without having to deal with dragging a cord around. The adjustable depth is a nice feature to make good box cuts. One thing I found a little hard to get used to is the on and off switch.

It’s at the base of the tool making it a little difficult to use single handedly. Overall, made my drywall jobs a lot easier!.

I purchased this tool to help with dry wall cut outs and repair. I am purchased a home that needed more than average dry wall repair in bathrooms, installing ceiling lighting fixtures, and many other repairs.

I have used this tool in hopes for a cleaner cut when cleaning up holes and making the junction box locations. My two biggest issues are Dewalt could have made the size of this tool a little smaller to grip easier, and the light placement could be better.

Aside from these two issues I would use this over rotozip which seems clunkier, and dremel. The battery lasts for what seems forever, and locking color doesn’t require anything but your hand to loosen and tighten bits.

We all know what it’s like loosing the wrench to our demels. I have been impressed by the 20 volt line right down to their weed trimmers.

I purchased this saw specifically for cutting wood. I had some 1 inch thick wooden shelves in an old pantry cupboard which had been put in place before the plaster. The only way to get them out was to cut through them and because space was limited this saw was perfect.

The saw is sharp and the blade is very sturdy. I can’t say how it performs on plaster board but brilliant for cutting wood. I have only used it for this one job so far so can’t judge how reliable it is going to be.

Bought this tool for cutting out socket holes in plasterboard and punching out holes for cables to come through. Great tool. Very well made and with comfortable handle as well. Would definitely recommend this product from a quality and design point of view.

Irwin produce very impressive tools.

Needed to widen old mortice lock hole in very old pine door to fit new wider lock, so had to saw with the wood grain and this saw made light work of it as the blade is 1. 65mm thick and extremely sharp.

Nice design and good comfortable handle. Would recommend this product and would buy again.

I used these bits with Dewalt DW660 drywall router. In the past, I used Dewalt bits, but those are no longer available. Now I understand why you cannot get Dewalt bits – the Roto Zip ones are much better.

The key differences are that the non-cutting tip of the bit is shorter (which is good, DeWalt bits had too long of a tip, to my taste), and that the bit appears to be sharper (at least, it seems to cut easier).

I’ve seen reviews where people wrote that the bit is easy to break. You have to do something wrong to break it while cutting drywall. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of breakage: 1. When you install it in your drywall router, slide it into the collet to the point where spiral cutting edge begins.

You do not want the collet to grab by the cutting part with spiral cutters, but stick it in as far as possible all the way to the cutters. Do not let the bit stick out more than that. The longer is the exposed part of the bit, the easier it is to break it.

Just think about leverage applied to a long bit. 2. Set up depth collar on your drywall router in such a way that the spiral cutting edge starts on the other side of the drywall. This means that you will set the depth of cut at thickness of drywall (usually 1/2″) plus about 3/16″ (which is the length of the very tip which does not have cutters, plus a little extra).

If your router does not cut the drywall easily, it most likely means that you set the depth of cut too shallow. Remember, the very tip of the bit does not have the sharp cutting edges. It is used to guide the bit along the edge of your light can or junction box.

IT does not cut. Only spiral cutters can cut the drywall. If the cutter-less guide tip is not entirely on the other side of the drywall, you will not be able to cut. It would be like chewing without teeth.

When you are setting the depth of cut against a scrap piece of drywall, you should see the beginning of the cutting edge on the other side of the drywall. If you cannot cut drywall like butter because you set the depth of cut incorrectly, you would end up pushing on the router too much trying to make it cut and would break the bit in no time.

3. No strong pressure on the router. The force should be light, and mainly directed towards your box / can to make sure that the router follows its contour. In other words, you should feel more pressure towards the box along which you are cutting (and against the drywall, to make sure that the depth limiter is always in touch with the drywall) than in the direction in which your cut goes.

Drywall is very easy to cut. It is soft. Any excess force would lead to either router wandering off the desired path, or breakage of the bit. The last but not the least, as you certainly know, when you cut around a box on along its outside (external) edge, you route counter-clockwise.

This reduces the odds of router going off the path because it creates a force which pushes the bit towards the edge of the box.

I’ve very happy. These bits work very well. I’ve used them on drywall (sheet rock), and wood panels. They hold an edge better than the generics and are easy to clean. I will buy them again when I need to replace them.

Planning on a whole house audio system in a home under construction will have about 14 speakers that I mounting to the rafters on inch plywood. Used the RotoZip GP8 1/8-Inch Guide Point Drywall Cutting Zip Bit to see if it would cut the drywall with the plywood speaker mount as a guide.

The picture was my first test hole. Works quickly and does the job I will need.

So we redid 1/2 my house and this was so much better than most. The reason we liked this so much was the adjuster part wasnt at the top of where you can put your thumb. With that being said,(First complaint) there is no retractor for the blade so it sticks out all the time.

We got our moneys worth out of it and its still in good condition. Second complaint I have is that where you open it, the knob isnt tight. So it loosens partly while in your hand which may cause an issue.

We honestly didnt have any problems with it getting too lose. Just something to keep in mind. Overall I would buy one again if we needed to.

Not a fan of this knife, the blade change is cumbersome at best in my opinion, there is considerable “blade wobble”, and overall there are much better knives out there. I only bought this because it said it was for drywall, and I was willing to give it a shot and see how it compared.

It failed the test and is now my go to loaner knife whenever someone asks for one. Just get an Orcon.

I’m a union carpenter in NYC and use this to cut drywall all day. and it is my absolute new favorite hand tool. I love how ergonomic it is while holding it against the hook of the tape measure to score a board.

It is so light and I love how far the blade sticks out. Def reccomend.

If you’re accident prone don’t get this haha. This drywall saw is super sharp! No issues cutting through 5/8 drywall! This simply the best drywall saw I’ve ever used. Shipping was also fast.

I have had the original rotor zip and a few other copies, this one has replaced my corded Dewalt. Throw the cords away. I use this for everything now. It is compact, smooth, easy to hold and tool less bit changing.

I seldom used the corded one since the cord was short, packing and unpacking took a while and tool change took even more time. I use this more often now when I would not have done so. Battery is small but changing over to the larger Amp/hr batteries give longer duration.

The smaller battery it come with works great for short usages. Hanging drywall in a whole house would not work with the little batteries.

got this as a christmas present as i have just started hanging drywall. only complaint i have is that “tool free bit change” is not necessarily true. button gets stuck all the time. just skip the feature grab either a wrench or a pair of channel locks.

I use this rotary tool with 1/2″ dove tail bit to cope all the baseboard I install. Works great, I love this thing.

Perfect size. Genius folding compact design. Safe to store and not cut yourself. Locks into place and doesn’t slip. Quality blade. even though most holes are being covered, the rasp makes for a professional look and not jagged/torn.

Convenient 2-in-1 tool.

When I cut using the light as my direction it’s very hard to manage. Directing it opposite the light is much smoother , and the fact that it’s full speed all the time has caused me to break more bits then I care to think about.

Used this tool for cutting out light and outlet openings in a large drywall project. Good features including bump off switch and bit lock button. Works well, good quality tool.

This is a fantastic jab saw. My favorite part of it is the handle – very ergonomic. You can use this without cramping up your hand. I also like the handle material. It is not quite soft, but not hard either – slip resistant without being squishy.

Perfect! Stanley got it right on this one. All the features you could want – triple ground teeth, a hardened tip for punching through drywall, and holes for expelling the sawdust from the kerf. This is a must for plumbing, electrical, drywall.

An essential must have tool that belongs on every tool belt. If I were to offer any criticism at all it would be the lack of a snap on sheath / blade guard because this thing is wickedly sharp right out of the package.

You may want to split a piece of pex tubing or something to put over the edge. Great saw.

Used only once so far to cut a hole in a lathe and plaster ceiling to fit a brace for a chandelier. Blade quite stiff and sharp and with the fatter handle made the job easier without too much mess. It would be perfect for plasterboard.

Great tool, makes life so much easier, came with Two bits, and a depth gauge. Solid build and make sure you register it with Dewalt direct to get extended Three year warranty. Wish I bout it years ago.

I purchased this saw at my local home improvement chain store. Of all the jab saws to choose from, this Stanley stood out with a wood grained handle that exemplifies classic style. When I handled the saw, I immediately felt the build quality.

Drywall is hard to cut when you just need to make a hole for a light switch or some other wrid things. This little saw makes cutting a non standard opening in drywall a breeze. Drive a hole in the center of the section you want to remove then saw around the edges till the shape you want to remove is excized.

The saw is strudy and easy to handle even with my cerebral palsy.

I debated about spending money on a tool I only planned to use once or twice. However when cutting into walls you really don’t want to mess it up. This little saw was the perfect tool for the job and I am happy I forked over the cash.

Wanted something to go through plasterboard for cutting out sockets. Was not disappointed with this saw. Went for max TPI for the smoothest cut. Good design, handle has a nice feel and saw teeth very sharp.

Fantastic piece of kit. Can’t believe I have managed so long without one. Perfect for cutting dry lining and even some wooden battens when required. You don’t even need to drill holes to start. Don’t leave it in you tool bag without the guard on though, it’ll cut you to ribbons when you’re rooting around for kit :O).

I like bahco tools and this is second time i purchase this. I lost it firat time. Vut the quality is great. I am not a partititioner and dont use it all day everyday but i think the quality is good. totally recomend.

Home depot switched from Irwin products to Milwaukee. These are the best for sheet rocking. Easily switch blades and has a further blade stand out than most rock knifes to get the blade in deep.

I work with drywall everyday at my construction job and I have to say this is a great saw. I cut out for electrical boxes, light boxes, pipes, ect. It stays sharp and cuts great for either straight or even round holes.

Fits great in your hand and is very comfortable. My biggest problem is it rips up my toolbelt pockets. So if this came with a sheath or if one was at least available for it that would be great.

No, this isn’t the latest self sharpening steak knife or tactical blade but when you are faced with making quick work of slicing through drywall, then use the right tool to do it right. No need to create a pilot hole, this one has a plunging tip to get your cutting started and will get you about 1/4″ distance per stroke.

The teeth is very aggressive and won’t leave you with a smooth finish but if you need that then this isn’t for you. Use a box knife and hacksaw to achieve that. But if you have to rough in a medicine cabinet or ceiling exhaust fan, then this will get the job done quickly.

I’ve used this for a couple of years now opening up drywall for electrical installations and it works beautifully, but they REALLY need to sell a sheath with this. My toolbag doesn’t have a good spot for it, so I have to try to keep it underneath some other items and out of the way, but I’ve still nicked my fingers on this thing more times than I can count.

Sell this with a sheath, and you’ve got a real winner.

A really good plasterboard saw. Even used it for some timber cuts! Handle is thick and good texture for grip.

This thing works great and makes minimal mess when attached to a dust extractor. Very easy to learn to use and depth can be set to cut drywall out over studs without damaging studs which is very helpful.

Nice clean cuts. Just make sure you don’t hit a hidden fastener with your blade while cutting over studs, but that is user error and only happened once, I swear. Overall, best way to cut drywall period.

It is better than a utility knife, oscillating tool and rotary cutout tools like RotoZips or the like. Also, least messy, too. Would recommend to anyone with much drywall cutting in their future.

i love it. The vacuum hook-up works great. Well balanced. My only complaint is. When you cut sheetrock for a repair you typically want to cut so you split on a stud. doing so you will undoubtedly hit some screws.

it doesn’t take many to make the blade very dull. New blades are expensive and not readily available (must be ordered online). This has led to tool not being used as much as wanted.

This drywall saw is a game changer. Hook up a heap vacuum and you can cut drywall with no mess. Makes demo a cinch and intricate holes easy. Blade depth is adjustable. I have used to cut outlet holes, ceiling holes for hood vents, demo and much more.

Best tool buy of the year!.

I bought this a few days ago and for me it is worthless. The instructions that came with it provides little information. I used You Tube to learn about it. The bit kept coming out and I finally found out how to tighten the bit.

But when I wanted to unlock the bit, it was stuck and I couldn’t unlock it. I finally got it unlocked having to use a pare of pilers. I had purchased a larger bit to cut drywall around doors and windows, but couldn’t use it because it only comes with a large, or small adapter.

Cutting around a plastic outlet it ended up cutting into the wire and damaging the plastic box. Which is something it shouldn’t be doing. It is a new tool to me so I know there is a learning curve, but for me it just didn’t preform like I had hoped.

When using drywall stilts on a jobsite, I hated having cords from cut out tools and strip fed drywall screw guns. This had the same power as the corded and along with the cordless screwgun and strip magazine attachment, I enable to maintain capacity and capability while keeping a cord free floor.

The quick change feature was an issue until we changed our method to hold the twist lock stationary and turn the tool instead (works with old fat fingers but strong full hand grip). The guard is the same as ever other style, so no wow factor for comparison.

This tool NEEDS to be sold with a hook since cordless is meant to be with you for convenience, especially for stilt walkers, lost a star for that having to be separate purchase even when sold as kit.

Had it for 4 years with no issues, cleaning it off daily before going back in the work bag.
