20 Best Tool For Cutting Carpet (2023 Updated)

It took me WAY too long to figure out how to use this thing, when it’s really quite easy. I can’t remember if directions just weren’t included, or if I threw them away. Hold clear plastic insert in place while turning black knob to loosen.

Remove the clear plastic insert, replace it with a blade, use the black knob to tighten. Definitely test it out on a scrap piece of board to understand how to cut with it, and from what direction you’ll need to cut.

You cut from the back of the mat, to prevent marring of the front, and I placed the blade so I could pull to cut. Using a self healing cutting mat, a t-square and some small clamps on a table, I had absolutely no problems AT ALL with any slippage and my mats are pretty close to perfect.

SO PLEASED. This mat cutter is large and very easy to handle – I remember using smaller ones in college to cut mats and they were so finicky and slipped easily. A+++ will use again.

The size and general shape of the Dexter mat cutter gives support to the arthritic joints in my hands. It also allows me to cut free-form curves in mat board that I use in making mat board sculptures.

By adding two washers from the hardware store to the back end of the bar that holds the blade and then tightening the screw cap, I am able to fix the blade in a vertical, ninety degree position that easily cuts the desired curves.

The Dexter that I had forty years ago and have lost in moving had a taller or longer screw cap and no washer were necessary. I don’t remember where that edition was made, but I definitely regret losing it.

The one I ordered this year was made in China and I had to add washers to get it to complete the desired tasks. I wish I could order the baldes in packages of twenty-five rather than five. Consider it.

Also, note that the blades from the Logan curve cutter that only cuts forty-five degree angles do fit the Dexter. The Logan cutter is smaller, not as easily controlled as the Dexter, and definitely is not a friend of arthritic joints.

The Logan blades also come only in packages of five.

This is a really great mat cutter. I was trained on a professional cutter in a museum, so transitioning to this type of cutter was easy for me. It is the best deal for the price. Someday I’ll invest in a large table cutter, but for the time being, this is perfect.

The only problems I have with it is that sometimes if there isn’t sufficient weight on my straight edge, my cut is wobbly. This problem only occurs when I am cutting large mats (and often leaning over my table to reach, etc, not the cutters fault really).

Having to factor in the 1/8 inch into my calculations for centering the cut can be confusing, mostly because I am dyslexic. I often get it backwards. Either way, I get better and better at it each time I use it.

I work with many artists that can’t afford professional mat cutting (technically I am professional because I was trained in a museum. ) but I know that it definitely helps with the presentation of prints and other artwork.

This is BY FAR the easiest tool to use to avoid the biggest mistake of mat cutting: over-cuts.

I’ve had 3 mat cutters over the years. The first, from Leichtung Workshops, was rudimentary. With patience, it got the job done. For 14 years I hat the Alto’s cutter, and I cut a lot of mats. It was tedious, though.

The Logan is like a dream. It’s idiot-proof, completely thought out and a breeze to use. Yes, it’s expensive, but it is a first-rate machine. I wish I could have bought it 30 years ago. A++++.

This is the machine to have if you are cutting mats for your own photos or artwork. If you are running a framing shop and making many, many mats each day you may need a wall-mounted or computer controlled cutter.

This mat cutter is a bench-mounted unit and needs some room around it. You will want to find a location and a table on which it can stay all of the time. If you plan on packing it away after each use and storing it under the bed you will find that you never bother to get it out until you have a bunch of mats to cut.

If you don’t have room for a permanent set up, or don’t plan to cut very many mats, you may want a smaller, more portable machine. That said, The Logan Graphics 850 is an accurate, sturdy piece of equipment.

However, the accuracy is only as good as you work to make it. Pay attention to how you set the stops. They all have micro adjustments and you will have to make some slight adjustments–although the factory settings are nearly spot-on.

Logan Graphics has many how-to videos on their website that are of great use. However, their users manuals are less so. I found several errors and outdated statements on the manual I received with my machine.

Maybe not the best mat cutter on market, but it has the capability and quality of much more expensive units.

If you’re like me, you’re probably asking yourself if you really need to spend this kind of $$$ on a mat cutter. The answer is yes. Why not just buy a 32 inch model? If you plan on cutting 32 x 40 mat board, you need a 40 cutter.

The problem with using a 32 cutter is that mat boards are not always 32. I got a whole batch of mat boards recently that were 32 1/8 and they won’t work on a 32 cutter. Why not a less expensive 40 inch model? This cutter has a really solid squaring arm, which you need if you’re cutting 40 mat board.

But the real selling point is that making bevel cuts is dead simple. Seriously Superior Support The support at Logan Graphic is phenominal. Period. The mat cutter I bought had a subtile defect where the bevel cutter was shaving off part of the bar that it rides on.

I took some photos and sent an email to Logan over the weekend. Not only did I get a prompt response Monday morning, but there was no did you try this or are you sure you’re not doing that. The support person said straigth-away this is not right, we’re going to replace it.

and they did. Yes, it’s expensive, but you won’t regret buying it.

OLFA utility knives are a must-have around the house, workshop, RV, anywhere you need to slice up almost anything – cut cardboard, carpet, sheet material, hoses, insulation, drywall. The inexpensive break-away/throw-away blades eliminate the need for sharpening.

A handle like this will last a long time, even under heavy usage. The metal blade guide and locking mechanism set this knife apart from the cheap imitators.

I have been using these knives since University in the 1970’s. I still have my first one, blade after blade, the handle still works as it always has. They are handy to have a few of, for different work areas.

The blades cut through everything.

I use the OLFA Snap-Off Utility Knife for a variety of tasks in my studio. I sharpen my pastel pencils, cut mats and foam core, and for dry mounting. I’ve used other mat cutters but this is, by far, my favorite.

It’s a great design.

Pulling a cut though a matte board takes some muscle and a consistent, evenly paced pull across the board. I also have a large metal straight edge that I c-clamped to my work table so that it doesn’t slip accidentally when cutting.

Works great – if you can do that all in one fluid stroke! It’s a great product, and honestly it does what what it’s description says – I only wish there we’re a little more detail on the effort and precision with which you are instructed to use this with.

Instructions included are a little vague but the tool is easy enough to figure out. Hardest part is the corners of your matte window. I’d recommend stopping just a hair shy of the corner and finishing it with a sharp exacto or other fine knife.

I overcut and had a couple of warpy corners on some test cuts. Lastly – it eats up razor blades pretty quick. I went through 3 of them them cutting 20×24 mattes. None of these are complaints though! Just observations and tips.

Will not cut through anything much thicker than paper. Had hoped to use for some professional looking matting of printed material. The blade is just not sharp enough to go smoothly through the matt board, resulting in crooked cuts because it slips.

Requires a lot of force to use. I used my drafting table and securely taped down my matt board and using the straight edge in locked position and holding down with all my weight the cutter still will not smoothly cut.

A piece of junk, tried switching out blades and using at max depth. An exacto knife and a 45 scale to cut against will do the job 100% better to get a beveled edge. Do not waste your money.

Some time ago I lost the original cutter for a Logan Compact Classic mat cutter. Finding the replacement cutter was easy at the local Blick Art store. Purchase made – done deal – sort of. When I used the cutter for the first time, I noticed the “guides” that match a special track on the “guide bar” were missing.

Seems Logan does not include those special guides in the replacement cutter packaging. Back to the store I went, but the “guide feet” are not a shelf-stock item. Neither are they special order – but they must be ordered online.

Finding the pieces online was time consuming, as I did not have a part number nor the correct nomenclature. (Still don’t as you can tell, they are simply an “accessory kit. “) Eventually the correct parts were located on a (somewhat obscure) sub web page and ordered.

The inexpensive shipping option actually had the items in my (snail) mail box in very short order. Bully for them. It’s great to have the mat cutter back in it’s original as-purchased configuration. Now it’s time to complete the framing projects.

Overall, very happy with the service and speed of the shipping. If it wasn’t for needing an obscure item, I’m sure the entire research-to-purchase phase would have gone much more quickly.

I bought the template for the face mask after watching the very helpful videos. I tried cutting out with my existing rotary cutter and realised it was too big for this project. So placed an order and it arrived within a few days.

Very pleased with the product.

There is nothing easy about changing the blade on this thing. But the blade comes loose very easily–when you’re in the middle of using it. And when you try to tighten the blade it’s impossible to snap the lever in the correct place that tightens it unless you break it.

And during the process you’ll be sure to cut your fingers. Also, the guard is poorly designed. It’s very flimsy and surrounded the blade with diagonal stripes. Unfortunately there were no reviews to read before I purchased this item.

Once you figure out how to secure the blade, this is so great for those prone to hand pain. It bridges the gap between traditional exacta knoives and utility knives that I’ve been looking for as well; love it!.

This is amazing at cutting thicker material. It cut through the foam board like butter. And the grip is nice as well. I highly recommend this one.

I was remodeling my townhouse and replacing carpet with 11mm laminate flooring. I purchased this because I wanted to be able to work and not disturb my neighbors. My table saw and mitre saws were in the garage due to the dust and noise.

I was installing the flooring on the third floor. At 70, I wanted to minimize the times I had to climb the stairs. This tool worked perfectly. I found to get a better edge on the flooring no cut should be less than an inch.

Also, I stood on the plank an cutter platform to keep the plank in position. This also helped get better cuts. This was a real time saver and left no sawdust mess to cleanup.

Pros: This is one super sharp cutter, watch your fingers. Cut with ease and NO dust flying around. I wished I would’ve bought this awhile back, I would’ve save a lot of time going to and from my miter saw.

Well made product and eventually the blade will get dull like any other cutting blade. Price for this product was reasonable.

This is a great tool for anyone doing their own laminate floor. SO much faster and cleaner than using a saw to cut your laminate (I’ve done it both ways). No dust and you can use it right next to your work.

Relatively light weight, but gets the job done with one good push down on the lever/handle (SNAP–and it’s cut). For approx. 2 hours of a contractor’s wages you own the tool and can do it yourself.

the instrument rips through carpet. Sometimes it takes a bit to get it started. sometimes I need to start the cut with a sharp knife and finish with same. If I draw a strait line where I need to cut I can mostly keep to the line.

That’s good enough when it is being used to rip up old carpet while removing it. I am laying carpet tiles which have a very stiff backing and need to have very strait cuts if the tiles are to go together tightly.

I do not find this instrument useful in these circumstances and I need to use a Stanley knife (sometimes called a craft knife)up against a tightly clamped 1 meter steel ruler for these situations. for the outlay it is a useful tool and seems sturdy enough quality.

OK the design prevents you cutting through the carpet accidentally (as it cuts ‘upwards’ and away from the carpet) but really its easier to use a good ‘Stanley’ knife and put a piece of plywood under where you are cutting.

Or just take more care when cuttng :-). Also the blade required has two holes in it which is not the standard sort which is easily available. So its cheap but its just not solving a problem well enough to be worth buying.

Bought this tool for less than 4 , reduced carpet fitting time by 2/3 rds. Recommend to anyone to buy it , blade blunts fairly quickly but is reversible. I bought to use on carpet and cant wait to see how it performs on Lino.

Zips through the cutting and no chance of scoring the skirting. Great little gadget.

I got these scissors thinking that they’d be great to have in the garage for cutting twine and such. Wife “borrowed” them to cut wrapping paper and some fabric she has and I haven’t seen them since. The one time I did get to use them to cut twine and butcher paper they worked pretty well.

They are plenty sharp and have a nice heft to them. Make no mistake they are a large pair of scissors and since I tend to cut larger pieces of paper I’m plenty happy with the size. Since my wife has absconded with them she told me that they cut very well and doesn’t intend to give them back.

I wish I had gotten a picture of them next to something to show off the size and some of the stuff that I’ve cut prior to them being disappeared but what can you do?.

I will start with the bad first because i only can mention 2 negatives, first the packaging that these are sold in is a thin plastic sleeve, these shears are very large, upon picking up the package for the first time the shears fell through and landed point first on my legs, luckily no damage was done but better packaging needs happen.

Second is in the paint for the grip, there were a few small imperfections that were noticeable when gripping. Now to the positives. These are built like a Sherman Tank, heavy with a beautiful grind and polish on the cutting edge.

I have been able to cut thick cardboard, card-stock, and even tried tissue and toilet paper and the results were the same. It cuts like butter. Besides the small imperfections in the grip paint, the grip feels fantastic.

I bought this cutter for 3, 4 and 5mm thick plexiglass. It works perfect. First you cut few times and than you break it. It will give you almost prefect cut. You can use sharp blade to clean the edge.

I recommend this item.

It cuts very and is easy to use

A good knife once you actually fathom out how to remove it from its plasticised cardboard packaging. I had to resort to the QampA section on here and searching for YouTube videos and still struggled, in the absence of any written instructions for this item whatsoever.

So for anyone struggling with this, this is what I did. 1. Use scissors to cut a straight line from the bottom of the packaging to the end of the knife where the blade fits no blades are fitted within this section at this stage, so theres no risk of getting cut, because the packaging forms a loop between where it goes in at the blade end and where it comes out behind the slider that advances the blade.

2. Firmly pull the packaging out behind the blade slider dont worry it wont break the knife as you do need to be firm with this as you want to tear the packaging. 3. Press the red button at the blade end and firmly pull the last of the packaging out of the knife do this straight and dont try to pull it out at an angle.

It should come away quite easily if youve already done step 2. Then after I opened out the knife the next thing to fathom out was how to close it again. If you look underneath it the hollow section of the handle there is a serrated metal strip.

Press this in close to where the knife hinges and whilst doing so you can then fold the knife back up. Three blades are stored within the knife handle the handle hinges up if you push on the red plastic square on the underneath of the handle.

Slide one of the 3 blades out carefully and replace the handle. Then pressing the red button at the end where the blade is to be inserted, push the blade in squarely until it advances no more when you stop pressing the red button you shouldnt be able to pull the blade out and it should have made a reassuring click as it located into its final position.

I hope this helps someone.

Moving past the stupid packaging, lets list the positives first. 1. It folds, so is convenient for carrying safely. 2. Its decent build quality3. Its moderately priced. And the negatives1. The plastic components are fiddly and unresponsive.

2. The blade storage area is not really a dedicated space just the blades tucked into the open cavity where the knife resides when folded. 3. The folding mechanism is absurd. Despite what another reviewer said, this is a 2 handed operation to fold, which is unacceptable whilst working.

And overly fiddly too. 4. The locking mechanism is not really a mechanism its a metal flat plate inside the cavity, so you need to poke your fingers into this space to press aside the flat plate to release and fold.

Try doing THAT with gloves on. 5. It can be folded with the blade exposed. imagine the fun when you forget then open it later. 6. Inserting blades is at best clumsy, at worst unreliable. is it sited properly, or gonna fall into the mechanism, or worse, fall out Just spin the wheel.

Not a waste of money, but not good value. Better off with a 3 nonfolding cheapy or paying a bit more for much better designed folding and blade release mechanisms Only gets 2 stars because its moderately priced for a folding knife, plus the blades are reliable.

I regret buying it.

Being a decently Stanley knife, I didn’t look into other reviews for this product. I wish I had. I fell into the same trap as virtually everyone else and got the ridiculous plastic packaging trapped in the knife.

Broke a set of tweezers and several nails trying to extract the tiny bits of plastic left inside, which prevented the blade from being inserted and withdrawn, and the knife from folding. Took 45 mins, just about managed it, absolutely appalling and unnecessary design – why does it go the whole way through the knife?.

It simply works, and keep doing so. Anything cheaper breaks in 2 uses, ask me. The fine tooth grips very well and allows for big teeth to be at a lower setting.

A quality product- as expected from Roberts. A really good kicker. Well made and sturdy. Kooks good too!

These flush cutters are very poor quality and I do not recommend anybody buying them, Jaws do not line up properly leaving the cuts very poor or impossible to cut though zip ties, I used these for cutting a few zip ties and when I went to examine the cutting edge it was ruined, the edge was folded, and now these cutters are unusable.

I’m 16 years old and i am trying to build my tool collection, I am trying to buy USA made tools that are of very high quality and will last me a life time and then some, Every Video I watch I hear about Klein tools and how great of a tool maker they are and specifically there very high quality tools and how it’s worth spending the price tag, Maybe I got a bad pair of flush cutters and that may be very true but I have read other reviews and they are not to far of from what I am saying about these cutters.

My return window has passed so I could not return this tool. I do not recommend these cutters to anybody.

I had to make the decision of buying a pack of 5 cheap Chinese flush cutters or buying this one for about the same price as the pack of 5. First of all, I’m pretty sure they came in packs of 5 because they were expected to work maybe 10 times before they broke? But I digress.

I saw that Klein tools were made in the USA and I had a recollection of when you used to be able to buy things made in the USA and they were really good quality. I decided to take my chances and go for the Klein tool.

Was. Not. Disappointed. Just by looking at it you can tell that it is a quality tool. However, as they say, the proof is in the pudding (I need to look that up. wtf). Anyway, looking high quality doesn’t mean high quality.

So I’ve used it in numerous applications and it continues working like new. I will definitely go out of my way to buy Klein tools in the future. I miss this quality of stuff!.

I hoped to use these for miniature making, cutting plastic bits out of sprues and such. However, the manufacturing of this tool is terrible. I bought this tool and another, cheaper set of side cutters from Home Essentials Direct.

When I got these, I could see immediately that they were poorly manufactured, it’s sad when the cheaper tool is the one that is actually decent. So I returned it, got another pair, which were just as bad.

So the following is true for both pairs of cutters; one blade was longer than the other. When pressed together, you can see how unaligned the blades are, and noticeable gap. These would do okay for home electrical work but you can get better tools for cheaper right here on Home Essentials Direct so I would avoid.

Handle is nice, good ergonomics. 2/10, would not recommend.

Went from the 450-1 to the 650-1 primarily because the 650 had a straightening edge for squaring the mat board. After setting up the 650 and after a test drive or two – I returned it for the following reasons: the Start/Stop arrows weren’t properly aligned, which resulted in overcuts of about 1/8th inch.

When the bevel cutter was depressed into the mat, the blade crept or crawled, making the overcut problem even worse. Blade placement in both the bevel and straight cutting device was a nightmare. There is no defined slot recepticle ensuring that the blade was seated properly.

On one pass with the straight cutter, the blade broke free from the device, resulting in a cut index finger. It became necessary to replace the straight cutting blade with a pair of needle nose pliers to prevent further injury.

Once the blades were replaced, re-setting the blade depth again became a trial and error exercise. The bevel cutter seems to me to be set too far (high) from the mat – resulting in a greater opportunity for an inaccurate cut.

I ran two trial bevel cuts – neither one stayed on the line I’d drawn. I’ve returned the 650 and went with the 550, hopefully it will perform better than the 650.

Once I figured out how to get the blades in I was off and running. Read directions and did a perfect double mat with my first try. This will make mat cutting a breeze. Would recommend this machine to anyone wanting to get easy professional looking results.

The construction seems first rate. Should last a long long time.

These Wiss shears are awesome! I just finished upholstering a 23’ pontoon boat for friends. These shears easily cut through marine vinyl, snap in carpet, and Sunbrella fabric for the Bimini top. I’m so glad I bought the 10” shears instead of the 12” as my hands are small.

This was the perfect size and weight. I’m sure I will be using my Wiss shears for many more projects! Definitely recommend and would buy again!.

As heavy as these shears are being unable to have the small finger in the grip is very uncomfortable and a little unstable as well. I have a fair amount of cardboard to be cut into patterns. There is a more comfortable way to do it except it would require more space and set up time.

The time saving is the primary reason I went with the shears but it sure can aggravate arthritis after prolonged use. The shears cut well and no doubt for my use will last forever.

Found out about the bent shears with the foam grips, from a coworker. And have noticed that it is easier than all metal shears, on the hands and wrist it makes a difference.

I purchased this tool primarily for the purpose of cutting carpet and linoleum as I prepare for new flooring. My secondary purpose would be the many boxes since I purchase most things online for delivery.

I get lots of boxes every month. Lots and lots of boxes. After fully charging it, I first tried it on some representative carpet. You’ll note that the instructions suggest not trying to cut items greater than 1/4″.

While the backing for my carpet is well under that thickness, when you add in the pile it’s quite a bit thicker. If your carpet is still fully attached to the floor, the cutter will struggle to cut through.

If you’ve rolled some of the carpet back so you’re cutting from the underside of that carpet, it breezes through. I’d hoped it would cut easily from the top as it would make removing carpet far easier.

I haven’t tried it on the padding, but I expect it to work okay. Since circumstances have prevented me from attacking the flooring project, I’ve used the cutter for boxes. The first thing to note is opening boxes doesn’t work as well as using a knife, so keep one handy.

Once you’ve opened the box so it’ll fold flat, you can get to work cutting the box up. I’ve seen the question of why you might do this if said box is flattened. The answer is greater box density in my recycling cart.

When shoving conventionally flattened boxes into the cart, there’s always significant wasted space. Doesn’t matter how I stuff them into the cart, I can’t get all my boxes in there. If I break any box into at least two pieces, it stays flatter.

If the box is large, like the ones from Chewy I receive every month, cutting them down further means getting them into the cart more easily. Why not use a utility knife for cutting the box down? Blades get dull far faster than the boxes accumulate.

A dull knife is a dangerous knife. When using a knife, you need to use more force to make the cuts. Once the knife becomes dull, even more force is required. The harder you have to force the knife, the greater the risk of it slipping out of the material you’re cutting and cutting you.

Why not use a knife instead? Safety. This tool does the job and only takes minimal strength on your part to manipulate. Probably not going to accidentally cut your finger off with this thing. My conclusion: While cutting carpet doesn’t work as well as I’d like, I still consider it a worthy buy and money well spent.

I just bought a new one for my new office, and they improved the features. Our recycler requires us to cut up cardboard boxes, and put them into a recycling container, and this thing is amazing! While it cuts up lite cardboard (like copy paper boxes) like a hot knife through butter, heavier cardboard takes some effort to push it through, but it does the job, and it’s much safer than a box cutter.

Virtually no chance you cut yourself using it, even if you do stupid things. I have not changed the blade in over two years, but you can tell when it’s running down on charge, because you have to push harder to get it cut.

It charges fairly quickly, and the blade seems to retain its edge fairly well. It comes with an extra blade, and it’s easy to change. It also has a deadman switch requiring you to depress a trigger as well as depress the safety, but they’re located in an easy used place, so it’s very natural to depress both at the same time.

It also makes short work of those plastic encased tools and other devices that seem like you need a cutting torch to open! I absolutely recommend it!.

I had high hopes after reading reviews, and the recharge system worked well to get it up to full charge after opening package. Like many HF products the promise is not totally delivered as after using it to try to cut rug up for a demo job, it started struggling right away and the rug fibers got wrapped past the cutter w/o being cut and you’d pull the unit back and these fibers would trail out of it, requiring clearing.

The clearance that allows for materials to be cut is also too small for intended use. Even cutting cardboard boxes that other reviewers raved about was not very good and took forward pressure. Cutting cheap like 3/8″ carpeting took a two-handed level of forward pressure to force through, and even then would fail to cut cleanly so I’d have to pull back and clear the uncut fibers from behind the blade.

Ugh. I think the metal of the bottom part the cutter uses to cut against the blade is made from poor quality metal and is insufficient to hold alignment with thick materials. The blade is also seemingly made from inferior materials and did not seem very sharp.

There is a second blade included. I found it much faster and less frustrating to use the old fashioned box cutter knife with a sharp blade. I as expecting so much more.

Bought this and a pack of blades for it to skin the palm tree in the backyard after watching YouTube videos. It works great. Strong blades that are easy to replace with the locking handle. The blades are able to be switched around so all 4 corners can be used.

Great tool at a fantastic price as usual from Harbor Freight.

Recently, I picked up some new carpet scraps to use on the floor in my garage. I thought that I would lay them out and piece them together and wasn’t really concerned with the look as much as covering the cracks and stains on the floor, however, I did want the seems to fit nicely with no gaps or spaces between.

I started my project using a regular utility knife which worked “okay,” but not as good as I wanted. A quick internet search revealed a bargain priced carpet knife at Harbor Freight. Since I was going to be in that part of town anyway, I stopped by and picked one up together with an extra set of blades.

When I got home, I went to work and was VERY impressed with my new knife. It is EXTREMELY sharp and cuts through carpet with ease. What makes this knife really nice is how easy it is to change blades AND you can store new blades in the handle so when you do need a new blade, it’s right there ready to go to work.

I would highly recommend this knife to anyone doing carpet work. Be sure to buy an extra set of blades as this knife only comes with one. Long story short, for a few dollars and an afternoon, I carpeted my entire garage and I now have a good knife with super sharp blades in my tool box.

I had never had to rip up old carpet before and was afraid it would be difficult for me, this knife cuts through so easily! It was a little bit hard to get open to insert the initial blade, but a review here had a tip to loosen the screw a bit and that worked like a charm.

Replacement blades were very affordable but havent had to replace initial one yet after a large amount of cutting. Highly recommend!.
