20 Best Tool Boxes For Mechanics (2023 Updated)

Very happy with this tool box. It has the quality of Dewalt. The price is great. The size is moderate. Not large enough to fit all your tools, but it is designed to be part of a multiple tool box suystem that locks together and can be moved on wheels or a dolly.

The size allows separation of tools and the convenience of easily searching the box for a specific tool. I read reviews and the three complaints I saw were quality, plastic locks, and water leaks. This box is well designed of heavy plastic with two handles on top and on the side.

It has metal clips, not plastic clips like cheaper tool boxes. When closed and locked, it should not leak in the rain unless submerged up to the lid. It easily holds an electric drill, both batteries and charger, a box of drills, a box of screwdriver bits, and a dozen screwdrivers.

The TSTAK system is very innovative, but only TSTAK tool boxes lock together (Dewalt does sell other tool boxes that do not work with the TSTAK system). Note: this box has no tray and no dividers.

I bought two of these hefty tool boxes to help start my mobile mechanic business. I’m very picky when it comes to tools and equipment, and I have ZERO complaints about these boxes. The seal is thick and water-tight, even when I soaked the latched boxes on purpose with a hose.

The latches are large, strong, pad-lockable,and very easy to open and close. The tool tray doesn’t span the whole length of the box, but I PREFER it that way; you can get to all your tools underneath without having to move the tray.

If you need a relatively large, lightweight, durable, hand-held, water-tight, lockable, affordable toolbox, GET THIS ONE.

I bought this last week to store my new Stihl chainsaw (mc170). The saw was 32 inches total length with the 16 inch bar. I cut a. 75 x 4. 00 inch slot in the lower inside area to let the bar extend through the box with its plastic sheath installed.

I now have a good storage location for my saw. The other benefit is that I have additional space. I can store oil, ear muffs,canned fuel and saw accessories. Looks nice and is considerably more cost effective than the smaller cases made specifically for the saw.

The box also is lockable and is super strong for this intended use.

Great toolbox! Water tight and plenty of room! It has holes to put a padlock on each side of each latch. I Highly recommend!

I have had this model for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it. There is more space than I know what to do with. It is built of heavy gauge steel and has a very durable finish. The lid is taller than a traditional upper box when you open it though so you need to have enough overhead clearance for that.

Also, once you fill this model full of tools, it’s not going to be easly moved around by hand, though there are nice heavy duty handles on either side for a two man lift. This box will keep all of your tools neatly organized and at a ready access at all times.

The lock is durable and recessed into the lid and has an additional hasp over the handle if you want to add a padlock as well. The hasp is spring loaded so you have to pull it out a bit to put a lock through it.

I can fit a 5200 series American Lock through mine with no troubles. All in all, I would reccomend this box to anyone considering buying a high dollar toolbox especially as an upper box. I have mine sitting on top of a rolling tool cabinet and it’s great in my opinion.

I recently took responsibility for four (now five) sites and assessing their IT equipment. I was using a business level wheeled briefcase and a standard laptop briefcase to shuttle multiple laptops, drives, cables etc around.

After some searching and in-person assessment I ordered this from Lowe’s. The unit itself works well, I picked it up with no instructions, just the bare unit. It took a while for me to figure out the latch itself as it’s rather primitive and was not in perfect alignment.

This is the one in the centre just above the red portion. Anyways, maybe it had been a return/refurbish. Once I made sure it was in place, the unit opened flawlessly. It holds quite a bit of equipment – fairly easy to lift in/out of the work van.

I am now researching adhesive strips etc to cushion equipment. Slightly larger wheels perhaps with rubber on them would help traverse rough floors and curbs. Overall, though, it does meet the need for my particular situation.

Being a cantilevered drawer system, purchasers should be aware that they will need some room to deploy it fully. The valuation was helped by the fact that I found it online at Lowes. ca for $80 off.

I saw a review for this Craftsman Tool Box stating the tray falls in etc etc. This can happen (I tested a couple theories personally) IF the buyer was 1/1000 that got a bad box OR if the tray is being used to hold heavily weighted items that aren’t intended for THIS TRAY OR BOX.

I’ve had my 16″ Classic Craftsman for 3 years now. I purchased it to hold what I’ll call “everyday household repair items”. This includes a wicked sturdy claw hammer (not the massive size ones in the old metal garage tool boxes and found everywhere I wish they weren’t haha BUT rather I keep a midsize/manageable one), various lengths/sizes of both flathead & Phillips screwdrivers, commonly used plumbing items incl a few wrenches, plumbing tape, a set of allen wrenches, a basic Craftsman 9 piece metric 12 point socket set, “pliers” of both needle & vise grip styles, a multi textured sanding “sponge”, a Craftsman tape measure, a compact rechargeable Stanly multi-use stud/wiring and leveler etc.

In the TRAY, whether you’re ocd like me or not, small boxes of each (various) nails, screws, nuts, bolts fit nicely or lay loose in the zone you select. I also have good ole carpentry pencils/markers, sm bottle of hand sanitizer, a ziplock bag of rubber gloves, zipties, thumbtacs, all-purpose gorilla glue(travel sz), a couple of types of brushes-wire & soft bristle, a current tester pen, a sm box of tiny precision screwdrivers etc.

This box comes in under $15. 00 and fits nicely in a closet or under your kitchen sink for basic needs inside. It eliminated the dreadful junk DRAWERS and I can easily grab the box and take it wherever needed.

I do have a key padlock for it that fits nicely although since everyone knows IT’S MY TOOL BOX they don’t ever go in it (the items they need are in the garage or wherever they left em 🙂 My husband keeps his Military Gerbers and 2 sets of Allen’s in HIS coffee table drawer (mostly to open packages and to change strings on his guitar), OTHERWISE his collection of EVERYTHING is sprawled out on every shelf & counter in the garage.

I’m leaving this comment for those who love Craftsman and read the specs of THIS LIGHTWEIGHT/DURABLE CLASSIC BOX. It’s great for a basic household tool box or as a gift for your daughterS with too much makeup, too many hair ties, etc etc.

I haven’t used this yet but I know it will hold everything I need to do a job, and then roll along with me instead of wearing me out with carrying the weight of the standard toolbox and multiple trips for all the other things needed.

It will easily hold a crowbar, pipewrench, circle saw, saws all, juigsaw, level, square and many bulky necessities. Caulking gun, trowels, hawk, and that’s only the bottom section! The centre area with removable dividers is an obvious organization tool for sockets, driver bits, screws, electrical boxes and fittings.

It’s so versatile. There seems to be missing the customary removable tray in the top section but the interior of the open lid is supposed to take its place. My drill and driver, batteries, hand tools will all fit nicely and then I can roll it from job to job around the property.

I don’t think it should be expected to haul concrete blocks or gravel, but for the lighter bulky items it should be solid enough. I’m a woman and I’m a real fan of the wheel! This is already the envy of a male friend I showed it to,.

I’ve had this a couple years now, I carry my 18v tools in it, which is why I wanted something with wheels. Everything seems to hold up very durably, it has been bouncing around in the bed of my pickup.

I also ordered a stanley version of this box (identical quality) which has NO wheels, and I use lashing straps to strap them stacked and keep my hand tools in the stanley box. Great combo.

Perfect sized wheeled tool box. It’s small enough to fit in a small car trunk and still can hold two of my drills with the battery charger, and a bunch of other tools. It seems to be a more sturdy build quality compared to other tool boxes I’ve looked at.

I wanted to be able to lock the box while working at job sites, but unfortunately I couldn’t get any of my padlocks to fit through the small lock holes. Someone could probably cut through the thin plastic anyway to remove any lock, so it is not very secure either way.

The top storage tray is also a bit too small, it only is about half the length of the box.

Sturdy, good size. I put batteries in the bottom. In the tray I mounted and wired a solar charge controller along with switches and a handful of 12v to 5v converted USB ports for use with a Solar panel.

I can charge in daytime then pull back to camp tent at night to run usb lights, charge phones, radios, and GPSs.

Was looking at the yellow brands trolley, but couldn’t justify the price. So thought i would give this one a go. Glad i did. Its pretty strong for a cheapy. I have many times stood on the top of the mid or top boxes for a bit of extra heigh and im 15 stone! Bottom section holds several hammers, sds bits in a case, large hacksaw, planes, and my circular saw.

Mid section will take my Maki 18v cordless kit, grinder, jigsaw, sds drill, normal drill, impact driver, multi tool and 5 batteries. So a good size with a good strong top handle. Smaller box has a seperate tray with a little room underneath and to one side.

Annoyingly the handle is on the front, so when you pick it up all the smalller tools fly around inside. Wheels look a bit flimsy, but i have dragged it fully loaded over 30m of very uneven crazy paving at a regular customers place about 50 times and its fine.

Boxes clip together with a single big plastic clip and 2 hooks at the back, just press down on the clip and lift the box away easily. I have picked the whole lot up using the top handle and it stays together fine.

There are 2 yellow slidy things on top of the small box, but no info anywhere about what they are for??.

Sturdy construction. Compartments attach and detach with a reassuring click and stay attached when needed. Box lid clips are sturdy and firmly click into place. Wheels are solid, well fixed, and can take the claimed weight.

Very easy to use and move about with the extending handle – like pulling luggage. Made out of solid strong plastic and metal fixings where needed. I liked this toolbox so much that I actually bought a second! Very useful – recommended buy.

This is robust well made piece of kit , inside you can easily divide sections as there are grooves in the box I made a battery holder and increased storage space, I have contacted Stanley tools and they said they do not have plans in the foreseeable future to make any addons which is real shame as I personally feel boxes are better than the pro stack.

So I have added to by getting a caddy to the top of it. I use this in my van , I am an electrician and it has made a massive difference to space and organisation of my tools. Some draw backs but overall good strong kit.

What a disappointment. Drawer completely stiff and barely able to open. Absolute junk. Purchased as a Christmas present, so by the time we opened it, we were outside the return window.

I bought this for my hubby for Christmas. It was the perfect size and he loved the weight of it. He really likes Jeggs products and I am glad that I could get through Walmart.

I love how lightweight this toolbox is. I have used some other toolboxes in the past and the boxes themselves added to the weight of the tools they were carrying which made them that much harder to carry around.

This box is super light and easy to haul around. There’s a removable tray inside which is helpful to carry around if you’re doing a job that requires switching between a few tools and it works great to throw bits and pieces into as you’re working.

The main compartment in this toolbox is a good size and length to carry hammers, small saws, wrenches, screwdrivers, and other long-handled tools. There are some handy little compartments on the outside of the box as well that are great for storing screws, fittings, or other small things that would otherwise get lost in the box.

The box itself seems durable and I expect that it will last a long time.

I have a wood shop setup in my garage and this toolbox is great to have for projects. I actually like to keep it empty most of the time and as I use tools on a project that I know I will use again, I put them in this toolbox.

It helps my workflow stay clean and the small parts organizer plus the tray at the top of the toolbox means it is quick and easy to get what I need. I could also see this being a great tool box for the DIYer that doesn’t have too large of a collection.

It is a sturdy plastic, but I still wouldn’t use it on a job site where it would see heavy abuse. The only thing that seems odd about it is the lock function on the front. I guess it could keep out my kids, but anyone who wants to get into this box could break it open in a second lock or no lock.

A friend of mine is also interested in picking one up to help sort and organize film gear. So I think its storage setup makes it flexible for a variety of uses.

While you won’t be able to retire the tool chest, this box is perfectly sized for average to slightly larger hand tools. It is a pretty basic model but definitely gets the job done. The interior of the box features a removable tray for small parts.

I find it pretty handy for holding wire nuts, screws, plumbing fittings, etc. as I am working on a project. I don’t usually keep it loaded but it is a standby for when I need to transport tools elsewhere.

This is especially handy when I need to be in a dirty or wet location with my equipment such as crawl spaces or roadside repairs. The plastic make up of the box allows for quick cleaning after the jobs is done and keeps water and filth from the ground off my tools.

I purchased this set to keep inside the house so I wouldnt have to go to the garage every time I needed to fix something. At the sale price, I figured I couldnt go wrong. After inspection, they are far better than you might expect.

I would put them up against original “real” Craftsman in quality & feel. The screwdriver tips are a prime example. The box and fitted foam liner are also as good as anybody’s small set. If you have the space, they would make a perfect set of breakdown tools for the vehicle too.

This tool box is perfectly sized for an emergency condensed tool kit, Great Quality, Tough tools, I used this awesome box for another hobby box, I carry my Vintage Model Racing cars to the track in this.

This thing has a bit of everything you need. It is a great great tool box to have in the back of a vehicle. Everything seems to be good quality so far.

This box is a very well made tool box. Thick gauge steel, solid clasps, and it was perfect out of the box. The lid fits right and the paint is flawless. The included tray is also well made. This is an industrial box meant to last years.

I bought it as present to myself for finishing my Apprenticeship schooling. I wanted something I can lock, made in the USA, and last me my entire career. It’s solid, and pretty stout even empty. Won’t ever need another box to take to work.

I also love the old school look to it.

I do not get excited much, but this box did it for me. I find many steel boxes with small latches to dump all my tools out randomly. This box has heavy duty latches and a steel handle. The wrinkle powder coating is top notch.

I love these toolboxes! They are waterproof, has wheels, and a extendable handle to transport easily. Also has a tray that sits in slots inside for your smaller tools. This is great for anyone that works construction and has to haul tools in the bed of a truck! I bought 2 and will probably buy more just to store some other tools that I dont want to ruin!.

THE BEST BUY! Used it little so far but very nice & convenient. Shipped very quick to my door too! Love the storage tray has a slot to hold it also. Holds all my tools so the guys don’t get in to em.

The only change I can think off would be to have handles on the ends for lifting it.

I’m a fan of Husky tools and this box does not disappoint. It even has a weather seal to keep my things dry. I’m adding something to it though. It’s going to live in the open bed of my truck so I’ll have to secure it.

I bought a U-bolt so I can pass a chain through it and lock it to one of the cargo hooks.

with three separate area’s to use, separation of the type of tools to me, is essential. bottom holds electric and battery powered saw-z-all [ 2 ] drills [ 2 ] and circular saw [ 1 ] middle holds all the various bits, saw blades, batteries and charger in one drawer.

second one for ”seldom used” tools and the top holds all the rest with a nice removable tray. they are all detachable which makes it easier to load/unload and the wheels make it portable. saves a lot of back and forth when at a customers house.

I have only had this for 3 weeks , so I can not attest to longevity. I am considering a second one to hold the rest of what I some times need to complete the job. I would recommend this to any one who has to travel job to job.

I had purchased a tool box that is very similar to this one. Unfortunately that’s as far as it goes. My first toolbox is no longer made. It looks like this one, and it lasted over eight years worth of abuse.

The base of the handle finally broke. I could not find that model anyware. This model was the closest thing to it. Right out of the box it looks great, and after one day of use, the wheels came off. So i had to drill a hole in the shaft and install a carter pin.

Something that the manufacturer could have done. The retractable handle looks and feels like something you would put on a traveling briefcase. It is very flimsy and will not last too long with all the weight of the tools and hardwere it can carry.

If you overload the drawers they will not open. Unfortunately I destroyed the shipping box due to the rain, and Walmart would not take it back. FOR THE PRICE, IT’S NOT WORTH IT!!!.

Bought this for my husbands b-day, the box was so big I couldnt hide it, and he seen it in the living room and opened it up (it was adressed to him) and he was so happy and excited. It fit so many of his tools in it he has a few empty smaller toolboxes now.

Good quality and worth it.

I bought my tool box some 25 years ago. I has been my companion all these years holding and in-trusting my tools of my trade all these years. It has traveled with my to every job I have ever had. The drawers roll out as if just bought yesterday, the locks and locking mechanisms have never failed me.

Unfortunately I can not show a picture of my beloved box as i passed it on to my son who just started his career as a mechanic with Ford. He needed a tool box to house his craftsman tools, what better way to start his career then with the tool box I started out with.

He is very proud of his newly acquired tool box, he proudly displays it next to the Snap On, Matco box’s at his shop. No one makes fun of it as he tells the story of the years it held the tools that repaired countless pieces of machinery, and now it is his.

I have both the 3-drawer and the 4-drawer model of this box. The 3-drawer is about 20 years old and the 4-drawer about 4 years old. They both work like new, the drawers slide in and out smoothly, and they hold a lot of small tools.

I have my big roll arounds and chests out in the garage but these small boxes are perfect for in the house. Highly recommended.

I’ve bought this on offer by Screwfix and I’m glad I did so. This system made redundant 2 totes of tools of my carry out routine and I still have quite some space to use. The wheels are excellent in muddy site environment.

There is space for a few additional clip in boxes. After 6 months of use has no signs of degradation at all. The only breakage I had was one of the locking ears broke a corner as I was forcing it out which was partly wrong on my side but this didn’t alter its locking function in anyway.

Now I do the locking-unlocking in a more careful way and had no incidents. One star is out of features as it doesn’t take drawers and one of reliability for the broken ear. The telescopic handle is very beefy and robust allowing very good control of the system and the wheels are big enough to roll and lift easily against stepping heights.

Other than that I would definitely buy again.

I bought the 3 box packout system from HD. Its handy. I store a lot of tools and supplies. I like how the trays are interchangeable with the center box. The slender or top box will not open if it connected to the lower box directly.

The bad. This particular box uses the plastic frame as a hinge locking mechanism. If you look closely at the hinges, there is a tab molded into the lid that rubs against a molded tab on the body of the tool box.

This tab holds the lid up when opened. On my box, this caused the tool box to tear. Now, it accumulates water and my tools are rusting and getting mold growth on them. I am in the landscape construction industry and sometimes work in the rain and snow.

My truck doesn’t have a tonneau cover on it because of the amount of tools I transport. The worst part of it all. I have emailed Milwaukee’s customer service twice. That is the only option given on the website.

I would have preferred to make a call or live chat and get an immediate resolution, but those options are unavailable. I still have not heard back from their customer care. Buyer, beware. A warranty, and a company for that matter, is only as good as it will respond to its customer’s inquiries.

I love my Packout gear, but this here is not going to be up to par for what most people were hoping it would be. I’m fairly disappointed, especially after waiting for months to get it. For me, the overall value is only worthy of 3 stars.

For some of you out there, this may be perfect for your needs, so please read the full review. Personally, I think this is only worth $85-$100 at most. This toolbox to me is only good for 2 things. #1 – if you want a cheap toolbox in your vehicle that is compact and isn’t super heavy so you can move it around if it’s in the way (this works great for me in my work van where I might have to move it so I can haul parts for work).

#2 – if you really need the 3 drawers for your Packout setup. Otherwise, I personally think you’re better off just getting a large Packout Toolbox and the Packout Crate or some other individual organizers for your needs.

Here’s are the list of Cons: The drawers on this are pretty ‘chinsy’. Harbor Freight US General boxes as a comparison, have much better slides. I do not see these holding up to years of worksite abuse.

When the drawers are loaded with any decent amount of weight, they no longer stay closed by themselves. Also, the whole box will tip over if not latched into something heavier or a mounted base because there is minimal weight to the box itself.

Milwaukee needs to make this into a rolling base and make it more rigid with better drawer slides, and then you would really have something worth buying. In this configuration, I would also like to see a handle on it, like what is on their large Packout toolbox.

This toolbox has been great so far! First of all, the quality is awesome. It’s made with quality materials! And, it’s actually really durable! That is an important feature to me, because toolboxes can get tossed around.

This one seems to hold everything in place securely and doesn’t get damaged easily. The size of this toolbox is also perfect for me. I like that the handle is comfortable as well! It even has a one handed latch that makes it easy to unlatch with just one hand! It’s a great feature.

The best thing about this toolbox, is the amount of storage it has. There are multiple compartments and a tray underneath to store tools. There are compartments on top too for smaller parts! There is just a lot of space for the size that it is! I highly recommend this toolbox! Give it a try, you will be happy that you did!.

Appears to be higher quality than I would have expected for this price point. More than sufficient to hold an extra set of basic tools in my backyard shed. Smooth rolling drawers and quite solidly put together.

I lined the drawers with black shelf anti-slip material for additional noise reduction. Replaces a cheap, polymer box that didn’t have enough storage space ( I keep tools in the shed to avoid walking around the house and into the large tool cabinet in the garage, if I need a tool for a quick fix or job in the backyard area).

I wish I got one of these ages ago. You can fit way more in them than you’d think. For the For the average person who just wants quick access to a few basic tools, these are amazing, and far more useful than the typical toolbox that opens from the top.

The price is also great, considering that it’s not that much smaller than the larger ones, but those are almost all over $100, even for the generic ones.

Excellent toolbox. Good build quality and smooth rolling drawers. Check out a YouTube video to help you determine if this is good for your purposes. I load mine up with mechanic’s tools and it gets heavy so one opportunity for improvement would be too add handles on the side to carry it more easily when it’s heavy.

Purchased to keep organized for light household maintenance. The 1st day I used it a latch fell off. By the end of the 1st week 3 latches fell off. Some parts are built very well. Other parts continue to disappoint.

I’ve considered working with Sam’s to see if exchanging it will improve matters. Lemons exist!.

I bought this as a Christmas present for a friend. I thought it would be perfect for him and he seemed to like it (but of course he would say that, wouldn’t he?). Fast forward a couple of weeks and I have seen him using this on multiple occasions and I have seen first hand how convenient it has been for him.

It seems durable and all 3 individual tool “cases” are used.

One of the latches on the bottom box doesn’t work properly. I have to use a hammer to latch it. I’ve already placed my tools in it and really don’t want to go through the hassle of unpacking and returning it, so I’ll just deal with it.

The middle toolbox doesn’t hold as much as my old one did. Just overall disappointed with it.

Initial thoughts after first day using this on the job. A sturdy telescoping handle attaches to a sturdy rolling tool box and lid. The metal latches securing the lid are much more robust than any Dewalt or Craftsman kit, even their so called tradesman versions.

Stacked up with 3 cases total including bottom cart the system rolled easily across lawn, gravel driveway concrete walks and even followed easily up stairs much like quality luggage does. Lid has a gasket that feels like silicone.

Cases were brought into customer’s house in light rain and no moisture got into cases. I desperately needed a quality modular storage system that wasn’t Milwaukee Packout price yet was stronger than Craftsman Tradestack and the Dewalt version.

Those systems are allegedly contractor grade yet heve flimsy latches and sides. Eric Smith; your team nailed it with this line. Good job. Please expand the system to include drawers with seals in your time.

Id like to not have to unstack everything just for one item or hardware. A better video and written review to come as I use the kit on jobsites across my region.

I use this as the base of my tool storage at my cottage. It holds my drill, angle grinder, reciprocating saw, palm nailer, brad nailer, palm sander, 2 pipe wrenches, pex crimping tool, as well as other misc.

items in the tray. The handle is great. It’s strong, but it does have limits. With the other 2 stackable boxes I have on top of this, plus my existing non-stackable tool box that I also have on top of this, I’m likely well over the 60lb limit.

I’m probably closer to about 80lbs of tools and other items all together. But, as long as I’m careful when leaning it over to pull it with the full load on top, which is stacked as high as the handle when it’s fully extended, it lets me pull everything with no problem.

However, if I tried to lean it using just the handle with the full load on top, or tried to take it up and down stairs with the full load on top, I think the handle might break. I’m very happy with this purchase.

It has already saved me a lot of time on cottage projects by allowing me to drag all my tools to the work location rather than having to constantly go back and forth.

I bought the canvas rolling tool box/bag about 3 years ago and it has been used so much that it’s worn out so I have decided to upgrade! I have a cleaning business on the side of my regular dental office manager position.

I use this tool box / tote for all of my cleaning supplies. This includes bottles and cans of cleaners as well as my brushes, scouring pads, pumice stones, steamer, paper towels, rags, trash bags, etc.

So far, only have the rolling tool box, but I am excited to add the extra pieces on especially the crate for the top! I can just throw stuff in it as I go if necessary. I love how durable and spacious this box is! The inside is a big square and fits things beautifully.

There is an extra organizer that is included that sits across the top when opened. The latches on the side are for the extra pieces you can get to expand the use! Love the BIG wheels and large handle to pull it with.

Tool box holds all the tools & extras you need. Raised inner lid allows full size spray cans of lubricants to stand upright. Upper tray allows access with easy removal. Tool box also has recessed grip handles on each end for moving when heavily loaded.

Over the past several months, to a year, I’ve been assembling my ultimate “Single Gal’s Tool Kit” It turned out, I ended up needing TWO toolboxes! (I’ve amassed quite a set). So first, I purchased a different hyper tough brand, THEN filled it with about half my tools.

These boxes are large and waterproof. I use one of on my side x side to store my chainsaw assessories, tools and oil. I use the other for tow straps, ropes and tie downs.
