20 Best Tool Box On Wheels (2023 Updated)

Although these are a great addition to the toughsystem line there is a very disappointing feature that is not included as shown at the dewalt booth. At the booth, these were shown with a clear lid which makes sense, the inserts do have the clip henges where the lids would snap into, but not available at the time of this review.

If you put these in say the small toughsystem box, anything you put in there will just move around and simply just make a mess. With lids, this will prevent small parts from flying around the case. the only option you will have is to carry your case leveled to prevent this from happening which is something we just dont do.

The other option is to use the foam inserts if you hold drills and larger items, however small items such as bits and blades will simply get tossed around. I upgraded a ton of 1. 0 boxes to the new 2,0 and also purchased a lot of these inserts to use with the boxes, however only 1% of the inserts are used and the rest are just sitting in the warehouse.

Useful, but need lids to make them a permanent attachment to the boxes themselves.

I recently received the bottom case as part of the sampling program and am fortunate to already own the three piece first generation of Tough Cases. I compared them yesterday and noted several upgrades which I’ll list.

Pros 1. The latches are higher quality and easier to operate. I’ve heard complaints of them breaking off in the previous model and I myself pinched my finger once when closing. 2. The wheels are larger with a bigger tread.

3. The handle raises and lowers with the push of a button vs. a pull bar, which I found a little difficult to use and I’m pleased to discover it’s removable. 4. The side auto connect latches are wonderful, they easily click together and release.

The old latches had to be smacked to connect and the handle of the top case was in the way when releasing. 5. The area where you can add a padlock is metal reinforced vs all plastic from the first model.

6. The new cases are 20% larger according to the website. 7. Also, I was happy to see the new and old cases are compatible with each other. Cons 1. While the exterior is water resistant, I conducted a water test for my YouTube review on both old and new models to simulate rainy conditions.

When the lid was opened on the old case, a small amount of water seeped through the hinge portion. On the new Tough System Cases, it poured in. 2. There wasn’t an instruction manual and I had a few questions, such as what function the yellow clip on top served.

3. Another thing I’d like to see might be the addition of foam inserts of some type to keep tools from crashing together during transportation. Overall, it’s a nice product and the modifications are an improvement from the first models.

Working for a general contractor, I work with Milwaukee tools during the day, including countless Packout Tool Boxes. I personally use & own DeWalt tools for side work and home work, so decided to try out the new ToughSystem 2.

0 rolling tool boxes. These boxes hold up well to rain and the elements, if closed completely. The frustrating thing is when you go to open the boxes and there is standing water on the box lid. During the opening act, all the standing water dumps right into the box!!! This is very frustrating and doesn’t happen with the competition.

Surely, DeWalt could come up with a design that sheds water away from the inside. I drive down the highway, secretly hoping these boxes fly out the back. I know what I will be getting next time. I should have spent the extra $10.

Several years ago, before Packout, I was using the Dewalt system. I know blasphemy right! Anyway, I was very disappointed with the Dewalt 3 drawer unit I had, it was not suitable for job site use, and didn’t last 3 months.

This made me very hesitant to purchase the Packout 2 drawer unit until I could see one in person for inspection. To my surprise yesterday I walked into my local tool crib and there it was. This thing is miles ahead of the Dewalt version.

I promptly purchased it along with other Milwaukee products, but in my haste I didn’t count the number of plastic dividers in the plastic bag. Although I should take some responsibility for lack of understanding what I was purchasing, I was disappointed to see you can only have one drawer divided into organizers.

The other is just a drawer. The only reason I purchased this was to organize small parts not to use as a drawer to hold power tools. I guess I have such a high level of expectation with the Packout system, because Milwaukee has earned it, I assumed I could divide both drawers.

For this reason I am giving them 3 stars. This is a solid unit and well worth the money and would earn 5 stars if the 2nd drawer could be divided. I feel something so simple to exclude was intentional on a financial level leaving us to just figure something out in the field.

If I were to purchase a tackle box to organize my tackle I would assume there would be enough dividers to suit my needs. I think Milwaukee missed the mark on this one.

This is the same review I posted on the DeWalt website, with one change. I HAVE NOW EXERIENCED THE WATERPROOFING PROBLEMS. January 2021: I have been eagerly awaiting my toolboxes arrival, and to say that I was disappointed upon receiving it is the polite way to put it.

I have long been waiting for the opportunity to purchase one of these towers, and had decided to purchase the 2. 0 because it’s supposed to be better and stronger. Well, the latch that engages the dolly handle consistently sticks.

I have to spend 3-5 minutes fighting it each time I want to adjust the height of the handle. It did not come with an instruction manual (was it supposed to have? does it even need one? I wouldn’t think a toolbox would need one, but the problems I have with this toolbox strongly suggests there’s a trade secret here.

) The latch sticks, it almost seems like there’s a pressure lock or a certain number of times you have to press the button to extract the handle or to retract it back inside itself, but each time I think I have this combination figured out, the button sticks in place and I cannot budge it.

I finally had to take a small rubber mallet and gently tap the handle cross bar where the button is to dislodge the latch. A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: While the display picture shows the dolly handle jutting above the top of the third toolbox, my handle does not raise any higher than the top of the third toolbox, meaning that the backs of my hands and knuckles are banging into the hinge of that toolbox the entire time I’m wheeling it around, and we all know that’s NOT something we want to have to deal with in our trades.

Also, each time I go to lock one of the boxes down onto the dolly, it sits lopsided to one side, and when I try to adjust it to lock the other side in, the box acts like it cannot be locked down on that side.

It’s a struggle to even lock the boxes down properly when they are empty, let alone when you have tools and hardware inside it! It is an unforgiving system/design that I absolutely don’t have time to fool with when I’m already pressured for time, and an extremely unnecessary burden if you’re already having a frustrating day.

I cannot speak as to the waterproofing, But as a result of the functionality I absolutely do not recommend this toolbox. WATERPROOFING PROBLEMS UPDATE: I used to wheel this into the warehouse and onto a box truck, and even while on jobsites I normally wheeled it through the weather and quickly back onto the truck, so the rain/weather was never a problem for me.

But working on a jobsite out in the rain? Sitting in the back of your truck for a couple hours while you’re working? The center part of the lids where the handles rest, or the tops of the boxes where those flip up latches rest inside, do nothing but collect water and holds prolly 2 cups worth minimum.

If you don’t have a way to dump that water out (your box is full of tools, remember? you can’t just turn it over or upside down. ) and you don’t have a box full of towels or rags to soak of all that water out of EACH THREE OR MORE BOXES, the moment you open any one of those boxes, all that water in those “reservoirs” just gets dumped straight down the back of your lid and inside your box.

I should also note, that after two months of light use (I didn’t fill my boxes up entirely, or with heavy items even) one of the interior trays cracked and was then useless. One of the interior boxes with the clear plastic lid, is also useless as it also cracked after light use, and only lasted about 6 months.

NOTE: I did in fact purchase the box from ACME TOOLS website, even though it’s not listed in my purchase history due to purchasing it as a guest, and setting up my account afterwards. I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS SYSTEM.

Sorry DeWalt, I think Ryobi has you beat by FAR this time.

My intent was to have a very flexible system and the ToughSystem seems superior because of the optional side arms allowing lower boxes to be picked out without needing to unclip a whole stack. The DS Carrier would be the perfect complement for this.

However, one thing that I discovered is that the 2. 0 boxes *will* fit in the DS Carrier fine, but since the new boxes are deeper (fore and aft), there is no longer a metal clasp on the backside to allow the DS central locking mechanism to clamp all the units in one go.

Perhaps a DS Carrier for 2. 0 will be issued with a different central locking mechanism, but it won’t be using a spine lock. Even worse, clipping the 1. 0 boxes in a stack shows that the deeper 2. 0 boxes will interfere with the 1.

0 box’s backside metal latches too, so you have lost the provision to latch them in the back with the DS Carrier in a mixed stack. To be fair, I think most people would choose to eliminate the clasp in order to gain the additional 15-20% interior space in the 2.

0 system. It just should be spelled out clearly. The new 2. 0 latching clips are 10x better for convenience, I’ve found the 1. 0 latching mechanisms tight and fiddly. Clipping my small 2. 0 box on top of a 1.

0 tote box was a chore, it seems like some of the tolerances are pretty tight and the middle 2. 0 box was easier by far. I would have preferred facing handles/lip on the bottom and mid box as well, not just the top one, it makes it far easier to lean over to grab a box when reaching inside the vehicle.

There is enough room on the other two boxes without affecting interior or exterior space. The rest of the system seems fine, the boxes are spacious on the inside and the hinges and clasps seem sturdy but they have not yet been put to the test.

Hoping that DeWalt expands their ToughSystem 2. 0 lineup quickly to become more fully featured.

as a Sub-Contractor and Union Boy, I enjoy being able to haul this on-site, looks professional and goes great with any Dewalt gear you may have! the wheels are sturdy enough to pull off the back of your truck and not watch them fly across the parking lot when it slams on the ground.

This Box could fall out of your truck driving down the highway and still survive being waterproof. it’s waterproof!, need i say more? I even put a hidden GPS inside my box for anti-theft. I have a Tough System Dewalt Radio on the top box as well.

still manageable as I have my Drywall Gear in the bottom box, Taping Gear in the middle & Miscellaneous Bits and tape measures on the top box. I call it my business in a box!.

I have owned this for about a year. I live in a condo and have a storage unit in the basement. I can roll all of my tool and parts to jobs here and there and up to my unit to hang shelves and repair things.

This unit has been really great for this. I bought the cantilever organizer as well and put it on top. I give this 4 stars because I don’t think it would stand the test of contractor use. I have been in renovations and construction in the past, and I think I would break it in everyday use for that.

The plastic lids do seem fragile, though you can see through them which is nice, they would likely crack if you dropped a tool on them. The wheels have been holding out ok on the unit, even though mine is loaded right up, but I have a feeling the wheels will be the first thing to go eventually.

My other issue with the unit is the locking mechanisms. They are loose and don’t actually lock into place properly, so they can slide open and allow a box to fall off the top. In mine I have a full screw driver set, tape, square, tool belt, hammer, wrenches, electrical tools, dewalt hammer drill, old style large cordless drill, tons of bits, parts, screws etc.

I would recommend this to a home owner, not a contractor.

I bought this to use in my business as I’m a mobile Foot care clinic. I spray it down between home visits. It’s stored all my equipment and supplies easily. I store my business cards, steristrips, some gloves,bandaids etc at the top in the compartments.

It’s light weight to pull, so easy I love it. Had to lower the rear seats in the vehicle to be able to fit the cart in, but that’s okay, lying on a Tarp to protect the vehicle. I love it has two handles on both sides so lifting it in and out is easy.

I recommended it to other Foot Nurses.

I am a pipe fitter, and I purchased the rolling box, as well as 3 suitcase boxes, sliding drawers, and two small parts cases. I generally use the rolling box with two of the smaller boxes on top. After 6 months of regular use, one of the wheels broke, rendering the set useless for transporting tools and supplies to and from the job site.

I took the box back to Lowe’s, where I originally purchased it, only to find out they would not replace it. They gave me an 800 number to call, where I was informed that I would have to have my original receipt, or they could not help me.

I am now switching to the more rugged Milwaukee Packout. Versastack may be ok for home owner use, but not built for a professional installation mechanic. It will not hold up to rolling on anything but smooth surfaces, nor being packed with any appreciable weight.

Needless to say I am disappointed that the Craftsman name does not stand for what it once did.

Love the versastack system i have about everything that you can attach to it. I install fire protection systems and i have even installed fire sprinkler systems at lowes where i first seen product. I use it every day but the handle latch broke first day its just a poor design especially if you put more than about 5lbs in unit but i just use a bungee cord and keep moving i highly recommend versastack system but hopefully the rolling base will get a better handle design and wheel system in future upgrade.

Having a full shop at my office and a small shop at home meant constantly delaying projects until the right tools were in the right place. Now I am able to put my most used tools in the versastack system and always have them handy.

The wheeled tool box work great as the base of this system. I went ahead and purchased the mechanics tool sets and storage containers to go along with it though, because the open box on it’s own means everything will get thrown around and mixed up.

Works great for larger power tools and accessories though. I toss my stack on the back of my truck, but I have a tonneau cover, so I have to lay it down to fit underneath. This works fine for me, but a hand grip area the base/front of this unit would be nice when hoisting it up on the bed.

If you have a van for work or similar this would not be an issue as you could just roll it standing up. The wheels are holding up well, even with the additional weight of the other pieces. Decent foam seal around the edges of this box helps with moisture, but I wouldn’t leave it outside constantly.

This Tradestack Rolling Tower is amazing. I like that it has 3 different parts to it, it has a suitcase, a nice deep tool box, and a rolling unit. One of the other things I like about this unit is that when I stack them on top of each other I don’t have to worry that one of the toolboxes might fall off because when they are stacked on each other they have a locking mechanism, and when I need to unstack them it’s very easy with the one touch release.

There is also an adapter that is included with the Tradestack Rolling Tower to make it compatible with other brands organizers and toolboxes stacking units. I have been very happy with this Rolling Tower because moving tools around to different jobs in my home has just made things a lot quicker and easier now that I can place my tools in this Rolling Tower and move everything to where I need it to be.

I high recommend this Tradestack Rolling Tower I make things easier for me instead of having to carry different tool boxes around, I just place my tools in the Rolling Tower and push or pull my tools to where I need them.

Its a nice toolbox with many good compartments for organization needs. Spacious and can hold a lot of various sized tools. However there isnt a stationary handle bar on the top or sides for easy lifting up staircases or into the back of a lifted truck making it VERY DIFFICULT TO HAUL AROUND.

As my first day of use I found that I would have to put the handle pole down and LUG IT DOWN AND UP 3 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS ON MY BACK! Its hard to hold anything else at the same time even just a water bottle.

At first I couldnt get it opened in a smooth motion- it kept stopping half way trying to open the sucker up. I used bicycle chain lube in all the sliding mounts- thereafter, it opened without a struggle.

I will have to attach a handlebar on the top and sides to make it more functional for stair use as Im a trade student and the campus has many flights of stairs from the parking lot! I also noticed that while walking with the pole handle that the handle wasnt quite long enough to comfortably roll behind me- that being said because its so wide it kept knocking into my shoes and causing me to slow down dramatically or it would tip on the wheel and stop altogether.

This made traveling from A to B slower and irritating. The perks- you can fit a lot of tools in the 3 compartments. I likethe design and the lids close secure. The center console has 3×3 smaller compartments for the smaller stuff.

The bottom is open for larger items or materials. The top has a removable tray and and open bottom below it. However had I known there wasnt a few grabable handles and the handle pole was too short (Im only 55- so youd have to be shorter than me to have this rolling behind you at a good pace), I would have purchased a more expensive tool box because the cons of this product make my experience using it more difficult, less comfortable, and irritating.

I recently got into jewelry making and was looking for a large toolbox that was portable and durable. I needed to take it back and forth to my dayjob so I could work on my down time. All of the “craft stations” I could find looked flimsy with not the right type of storage that I needed.

I. Love. This. Workstation. It holds so much stuff! I thought I would need a ramp to get it in my trunk but I can easily lift it. It also is able to stand up-right in my hyundai hatchback and stable enough not to fall over while driving.

The *only* thing is I wish the handle for pulling was more rugged but it is holding up quite well. I freaking love the fact that I can open it by my desk at work and instantly have everything at my fingertips.

Super happy with my purchase!!.

The flip latches that secure top lid are stiff hard to open & cheaply made. Sub par quality , not typical DeWalt standard. So shame on you for cutting corners on metal latch. But assume DeWslt co. Is well aware which shoddy latch is reflected on the bargain price.

Should be tough not flimsy tinny junk. My 20 v tools resipricating saw sander, 2 drills, circular saw, 2 others. The storage is generous nice deep Bottom drawer. For some unknown reason 4 star rating locked in I actually gave This a 2 star.

I like how thick the plastic is and how durable it appears to be. I also like the two convenient quick access cabinets on top. I put my most used hand tools there. The large cabin is great for everything else.

I tend to keep mine stationary, but have had to move it a few times. The carry handle is nice to have. Great buy for my needs.

I like the idea of a large “trunk style” packout. But there are several drawbacks so far that keeps me from wanting to use this box. The biggest complain I have is that i didn’t realize the stacks faced the same direction.

if i would have realized this i would have never purchased. In my opinion they should face opposite so when drawer systems are locked on top both stacks will face away can be used while still attached.

This also would make detaching on of the stacks (rear in this case) much easier. Maybe there is a reason it was designed this way that i’m missing. My second complain is the storage inside needs come time of divider system other than the little plastic carrier.

3rd is the wheels. just not cutting it. maybe different size or material would help. Maybe i’m being too picky but I should have just got the two wheel dolly cart.

I love the size of the box to hold all my larger tools in one place. What I don’t understand is why this box was designed with places to insert dividers (which would be a HUGE help!), and yet no dividers were supplied or even available to get! Please provide some stout dividers that will fit in the designed spots of this case.

For the retail price paid for this case, they should be supplied free for those of us who’ve already bought this case! Also, as another user commented on, why does the nice sized handle not lock in fully extended/retracted positions? This really should be a feature available just like it is on the large rolling box.

It’s not too fun when the case is fully loaded with tools and as you pick up the case, the handle may slide in/out as you pick it up from a laying position, which can throw you off balance and pull a back muscle when the case transitions onto the wheels while the handle slides in/out!.

This is a very nice box except one glaring design fault. Both of the locking spaces on it face the same direction. Example, when you put 2 boxes on top you can only access one of them. The one at the wheel end has the latches drawers facing the other box.

You cannot access the latches without removing the box and turning it around. What’s more removing box is difficult without removing the one on the handle end because of the narrow gap between them. The engineer who designed this clearly never had to use it.

It would be nice if Milwaukee would offer a new lid with both mounts facing away from the center.

It was a good deal when i found it at Lowes. For the work I do not so much. Rolling across gravel everyday it does not have the clearance height for the wheels. Latches are barley holding on and plastic tote areas have cracked.

This product is more ideal for a shop type construction area. i would recommend to a friend if i know where he will be using it. Would like to see if Craftsman would like to meet me halfway on a more durable work stack.

Also interested in being a beta tester for their products because my job does demand alot and I depend on my tools so much.

I did ALLOT of research on getting a rolling portable storage system. I’m on the road allot and needed something versatile and durable to withstand various jobsites and locations. If I were a maintenance mechanic at solely ONE location, this would be perfect.

BUT, the latches don’t lay flat, on a busy area they can get knocked off. ( I HAD another craftsman large wheeled box with the same latches, and they fell off). I WISH THE VERSA STACK WAS BUILT HEAVY DUTY, even the DEWALT has same issues.

I had to go with MILWAUKEE packout system. They stack more securely, I can open boxes on the bottom of the stack without unstacking the ones on top, and the latches lay flat so as to not get knocked off at the jobsite.

ALL OF MY POWER TOOLS and other tools are CRAFTSMAN. I always get weird looks when I roll my milwaukee packout to a site and WHIP out my CRAFTSMAN stuff. I’m am industrial millwright mechanic, mainly working at foundries and heat treat facilities.

My tools get beat up. Craftsman has MORE than exceeded my expectations. I just wish the versa stack was more durable, I REALLY wanted to buy them. But the latches fell off in the store when I tried them out.

This portable tool storage system is great! It is perfect size un like all the other stacked systems which are in my opinion way over sized. The smaller boxs fit on work van shelves Great and it is a plus that they are compatible with all Dewalt and fatmax tstak boxs you may have already invested in.

They are also cross compatible with Dewalt tough case system. Craftsman is doing big things also by making even more compatible tool and bit sets that work with this great versastak system!.
