There are a few things to consider when growing tomatoes in containers. First, choose a container that is at least 18 inches wide and has drainage holes. Fill the container with a high-quality potting mix and water it well.
Place the container in an area that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
When it comes to choosing a tomato variety, there are many great options for container growing. Some of our favorites include ‘Cherokee Purple’, ‘Early Girl’, and ‘Sun Gold’.
Tomatoes need to be fertilized regularly for best results. Use a fertilizer designed for tomatoes, and follow the directions on the package. Apply the fertilizer every two weeks or so.
Water your tomatoes regularly, making sure to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch or so of soil to dry out between waterings.
If you see any signs of disease or pests, take action immediately. Treat with a fungicide or insecticide as needed.

I purchased 10 of these to use as a thank you gift for my child’s birthday. I received Aug 2022. All the containers have a pack/sell by date in 2021 and now I’m concerned that the seeds are expired and will not grow accordingly.

I’ve grown tomatoes successfully for years. I thought I’d experiment with these. I bought one large organic tomato that had a great start. And I had one small organic tomato that was off to a not so great start.
The tomato that is in this is turning yellow in the leaves after being taking care of identically. The other tomato is thriving. The only thing I can surmise is the roots have no where to go, or the water is being held.
Also the cage gets hard in the sun and is cracking. This is the first season. I would not recommend!!! I’ve been growing tomatoes for thirty years. I generally have more tomatoes than what I can do with.
I still have blooms on it, it’s growing. Just not as healthy as I like to see.
I had some of my bags two seasons now and I bought more this season. Grow bags last a long time but some of the circular support connections have broken off by the 2nd year. It would be nice if Gardeners had some replacement options for the supports if it can not be better manufactured.
Still, most of the supports are good and I am able to use it for another season. One great feature is the support pockets inside the bags that makes adding supports so easy and very uniform and professional looking.
I also really like the flexibility of where I can plant tomatoes. Now, I have tomatoes growing all along my garden path instead of just in the garden beds. One challenge I had last year is with moisture retention, even with using specialty container soil these bags dry out fairly fast.
This year, I am using Ollas and trays under the bags to retain moisture and it seems to be working much better.
I really love these bags! I have two sets for two different tomato plants, and they are both doing great! Watering is my greatest challenge – I can never get it quite right (usually I water too much, but sometimes I overcompensate and water too little.
) I found that using these bags with the matching saucer made figuring out how much to water a lot easier. I noticed that when you fill the saucer with water, the plant just kind of drinks up water through the bag.
I just keep watering a little at a time until the drinking slows down, and on really hot days I leave a little puddle in the saucer for the plant to have something to drink later in the day. This has been working great and my tomato plants are some of the best I have ever grown! I’ve already ordered more to use next season and expand my garden to include other vegetables.

Pluses and minuses. The bags are portable, a gardener who needs sunlight all day could move these bags into the sun and back to another place later in the day as the sun changes. I used the recommended soil for the bag which means that the bags are not terribly heavy.
My tomato plants are now approximately 4 feet tall and the bags are easily blown over. 12 mile an hour winds yesterday and all three bags were blown over. I’m going to have to purchase heavy stakes and find a way to tie the bags to them.
Hopefully that will take care of the problem. The bags need watering at least twice a day. If the tomato plants were in the ground one watering a day would be enough. Those 2 factors make me wonder if I will want to use them next year.

i ordered the prickly pear cactus, lavender, and aloe versions of this contraption. I noticed some of the instructions did not line up with what was actually packaged. Maybe it was just the cactus that wasn’t accurate.
It’s been a couple months or so since i started all three, so I don’t remember the exact details. I got them all started up without much trouble, even though i struggled cutting the planting and threading the wick (i’m just not good with those kinds of things, nor am I familiar with making/maintaining self-watering planters).
The aloe sprouted pretty quick! My normal household temperature falls in the range that they were said to germinate. The weather outside hasn’t been ideal for putting them outside yet, but I think they will really take off once they get more light than my windows can provide.
Right now they are chubby babies, and quite a few of them! I think all or nearly all of the seeds sprouted (~10). The cactus and the lavender have yet to sprout, although I think my household temperature is 5-10 degrees outside of their preferred sprouting range.
I didn’t think that would be too much of a problem, but here we are. Maybe they still have a chance if I can figure a way to get them to the right temperature. They haven’t dried out yet and haven’t gotten any mold/fungus.
i haven’t seen a positive review of these yet, and it makes it wonder how viable the seeds are, especially after considering the inaccurate instruction booklet.
I followed all the directions to a T to start the growing process of the tomato seeds with the included soil and glass jar. In the beginning everything was looking good and the seeds were all sprouting within a few days and just like the directions said, when they got to about 2 inches tall, to carefully remove all but the three of the best looking ones, so I did that.
Thankfully though all the others that I removed out of the glass jar I saved and transplanted in another pot with my own potting soil to place outside but kept the Back to the Roots glass jar with the three best looking new sprouts indoors by the sunroom window to get the best sun.
Unfortunately those three didn’t survive and never grew anymore and eventually wilted and died even after giving them the daily attention as required from the directions. But the success story is all the other sprouts that I originally saved and placed in an outdoor pot survived and are growing wonderfully and the cherry tomatoes have started to grow after several weeks and soon will be ripe enough to eat.
The directions don’t even suggest keeping the others but to only keep the three best looking sprouts in their provided glass jar but thankfully I saved all those others because those are the ones that actually successfully grew and the three in the pot in the glass jar never came to fruition.
So at least I still got a nice lot of cherry tomatoes out of the deal! #trynatural.
This a arrived in its cute recycled cardboard egg crate with all that’s needed to get started. Caveats: you need to put something under it to catch the water that will leak. Also, plan to repot the seedlings into larger pots VERY soon after they come up.
Sunflowers have a taproot that needs room to develop. The otherwise excellent instructions don’t really reference that. That aside, I am delighted! This kit was less expensive than buying plants and I am so very impressed with the variety of flowers included, which will guarantee a long blooming season and plenty of food for our local busy honeybees, tireless songbirds and sleek squirrel squad.
Varying heights, colors, and blooming times also make this a great statement for a planting bed. Sunflowers don’t require lots of patience, making them ideal for introducing small kids to the joys of gardening.
The soil at this 1947 time capsule house I’ve inherited is poor, but I think mulch and staking will help them do well. I think this is a great gift for pretty much anyone, but people trapped inside by The Rona (like me!) may particularly enjoy it.
