20 Best Suction Grab Bar For Shower (2023 Updated)

I received the Mommy’s Helper MHI 16 Grab Bar Chrome and it has been more help then I thought it would be. I recently had surgery and needed a lot of help getting around which is great if you have the help but in the shower I have to go ot alone.

The grab bar has aided in getting in and out of the shower and holding to it while needing to bend in the shower. Balance had been a big issue while healing from surgery and the grab bar has helped. The chrome color really stands out and is very complimentary to our fixtures.

The instructions are easy to follow and attaching it to the wall is super easy. I do very much recommend this for those who need it but don’t want to install a permanent one that may not be needed in the future.

Because you can set up 2 different angles that one may be comfortable getting in and out of as shower or tub and it may not be the best angle for grabbing a safety bar getting out. so a second angle, in place is outstanding.

I have a little arthritis and a bit of neuropathy and this bar works so great getting in and getting out and having the custom angle for grabbing without resetting or struggling with a single length straight grab bar.

The description says it will fit tile if tile is at least 4×4. Ours is 4. 5×4. 5 and I could NOT get all three suction cups in a tile, no matter what I did. What did get in a tile had great suction and will work great if your tile is bigger or you have no tile.

Great for keeping balance. Not for full weight to be put upon it. I knew this up front so I has met and exceeded my needs for an elderly family member. I recommend both this product and vendor.

High quality grab bar and nice peened finish on grab area. The screws supplied, while long enough to penetrate 1/2 inch drywall and into studs or “2 x” blocking in wall, have a phillips head. There is no possible way to drive the screw into the wood studs because a phillips bit will just “cam out” of the screw head.

I tried pre-drilling the hole (not too big of diameter) to help and put some soap on the screw threads. But still, “cam out” occurred before I could get the screw all the way in. I ditched the supplied screws and used star head drive deck screws with a small washer under the head (because the slot in the flange was maybe a little wide for those type of flat head screws.

) Using a cordless drill and a star bit, I had no issues driving the screws home. Be careful not drive it too far in so as to crush the drywall! My recommendation to Moen is to get a little wiser about the type of screws provided with these.

Changing the screw type wouldn’t cost hardly anything more. The installers would be much appreciative of this.

Pros: Multiple mounting options, clear instructions, comes with necessary hardware for stud mounting Cons: No hardware is included for mounting on wallboard. This grab bar is well made and it offers multiple mounting options.

It comes with six screws for mounting onto studs; this could be a drawback for those who need to mount on wallboard. You will have to purchase separately the wallboard anchors. You will also need a stud finder and a level for proper vertical or horizontal mounting.

The instructions call for a 1/8″ drill bit but I had to use a 9/64″ bit with some silicone lubricant to get the screws to go all the way in with my drill. Do not try to force the screw with your drill as you will run the risk of stripping the head.

Take out the screw, re-drill the hole passing the bit in and out a couple of times to enlarge the whole just a little. Be sure to drill all pilot holes before mounting the grab bar. Additionally, you will need an extension for the screw driver attachment on the drill to avoid the drill hitting the grab bar.

Installation went smoothly. The grab bar is secure and attractive.

Quality was average. Would have liked a non-slip surface for grabbing which I believe is sold but was unavailable and too costly at the time of purchase. Having looked at previous reviews I was aware of warnings that the quality of screws that come with the product were of lower quality.

Such an essential component should be of top quality. I took extra precautions of drilling largest pilot hole possible for proper securing and only using manual installation of screws to prevent screw head striping.

This is not a reliable shower handle. I have tile and it does not stick well at all. The instructions say to install on dry clean tile and avoid any grout lines passing through. I did that and snapped the ends to close.

Gave one good tug and it came right off. I’ve even tried it with the suction cups wet and it still does not hold. It is a good size for my shower, but I don’t trust it as a handle or grab bar.

I bought it for a friend based on the number of positive reviews. Also because I didn’t have the skills to install a hardware grip, and was trying to save money. Initially it seemed to hold very well.

I stressed to my friend that he needed to check each and every time he used it that it was secure. He’s failing physically and a little mentally so I was a little uneasy relying on him to check each time.

I helped him shower once and I was satisfied that with proper vigilance, it would serve it’s purpose. The next thing I heard was from a visiting nurse who said it pulled loose from the wall while he was using it.

I wasn’t there, I don’t know if she properly checked it. She said she did, but properly in my mind means re-attaching it with fresh pressure. As a nurse she had an understandable bias against these kinds of suction cup devices.

Bottom line for me, I took it back but am not completely sure that it couldn’t have been made to work. So it might depend in part on how capable the user is to do a safety check. Other than that it seems like the hardware fixture is the only really sure way provide a safe grip.

I am elderly and live in a rental, so I could not install metal grab bars that need to be screwed into the wall or shower tile. I saw these on Amazon and read the reviews before placing my order. As other reviewers said, the grip is great and feels secure.

As for the installation, I did it myself and, being aged, my hands are not that strong anymore. I thought I would not be able to close the lock once they were in place. But, with a little perseverance, I managed.

One reviewer indicated that it is a good idea to check for the grip before using it to lift yourself, like out of the tub. I only will use those to steady myself in the tub/shower. Nonetheless, I will make sure they are sturdy before I use them.

At my age, a fall would be catastrophic.

My wife had hip replacement surgery and we wanted some handles in the shower for her hold onto, but didn’t want to permanently mount anything on our tile walls. These suction handles were the perfect choice for us.

They were easy to install, and are very sturdy. I cleaned the walls with bathroom cleaner followed by Isopropyl Alcohol, before sticking the handles in place. I was amazed how strong they are. After 3-1/2 weeks, one of the four suction cups was starting to become slightly loose.

I released that lever and then pushed the lever down again, and it’s been holding well ever since. I’d highly recommend these to anyone who has smooth shower walls and wants to easily add some safety handles.

My dad has been visiting us quite a bit these days and his balance just isn’t what it used to be. I bought these for my walk-in shower to help him out with getting in and out of the shower and standing up from the shower seat I bought as well.

These things are AMAZING!!!!! I have had them installed in my shower for 2 months now and haven’t had to reattach them yet – they are still on the shower walls pretty strong! I have a fiberglass shower and not tile so i’m not sure how they would be in a tile shower.

But I absolutely do NOT regret buying these and have even recommended them to some other people that I know where looking for good shower handles.

Amazing! Installed over a month ago and still going strong. As with most brands of this type of item, they advise that you check it each time before using it as there is the possibility that they may come loose and you would have to reinstall.

Prior to installing for the first time, I thoroughly cleaned the shower wall with a Scrub Daddy and scrubbing bubbles and then wiped the surface with vinegar and dried with paper towels. I wiped clean the grip handle’s suction cups with vinegar as well and dried with paper towels.

I then followed the instructions on installation and was pleased how strongly it held. Once installed, I tugged on it and it didn’t budge. I check it often as is advised, but has held strong since installed.

It also provides a nice grip without being slippery. This has really exceed all expectations, and would recommend to anyone in need of a reliable shower handle.

I ordered 2 of these for our shower. We installed a sliding glass door for our young girls. I noticed some reviews said these fit the tiles just fine. One end (on our 4×4 tiles) is a great, a smooth surface for the top to suction firmly too.

The lower end rests mostly on a full tile — but it does land on the grout seam. I was worried these would not hold. We have had these in place for a good 2 months and have had no problems. Our young girls use them for extra balance when climbing in and out of the tub/shower.

That being said — I am not able to comment on how strong they would be for an adult. They work perfect for us. They arrived quickly and the install was easy. For the price, these handles have worked well for our family.

I scrubbed the tub before applying these. I wanted them just to have to use as a balance as they are not meant for permanent attachment. I had knee replacement surgery and wanted some additional handles in the tub to have to be able to use as a handle for balance.

I do not use it to pull myself to stand etc as they are not designed for this. My husband noticed they moved once (we’ve had them on the tub for about 2 weeks) so we reattached them. But we have not noticed anything since.

We just make sure that before we get in the tub each time, we check the handle to make sure it is secure. Price much cheaper than in the local store. Glad I purchased them for peace of mind.

In our last home we has 2 in each bathroom and I tell you these work great if you periodically take them off and wet the suction cups. Our son who weighs over 200 lbs. told us after they were put in our guest bathtub that he actually hung by one of the bars with his full weight and it never came off.

I would not advise that, but I would say it’s living proof that the grab bars are GREAT!!! We have recently moved to Senior Living in Arizona. One of our bathroom tubs doesn’t have a grab bar installed.

I asked why. I was told due to a “tub surround” having been installed, it was impossible to find a stud to mount a good bar too, so it was suggested I get the ones with suctions cups. So here I am, early this morning, on Day 2 at our new place ordering the same grab bars we bought and used in our last home.

They are wonderful and DO work. Just remember that every couple of weeks to take them off and run water under the suction part and it will stick great. But if it dries out and you never do anything, it’s bound to fall off the wall due to dryness.

Installed three of these in marble shower to help elderly, but active relative get from wheelchair into shower chair. For these to work, they MUST be used on a very smooth and solid surface, such as marble, cultured marble, granite, etc that is firmly/permanently attached to the substrate (so you don’t pull the surface off the wall).

So given those conditions, these work like a champ. But for these to be effective, you MUST have the right surface – don’t waste your time if your surface is textured, or anything other than glass-like smooth.

For textured surfaces, you’ll need to install something that screws into the wall studs. Fortunately my relative’s walls are marble, so I had him go through the motions of getting from chair to shower, and marked the locations to put the three handles where he could best use them.

Once I had the locations down was able to install the handles in seconds – you do need just a little upper body strength to close the suction locking lever – not a lot, but more than, say, a 5 year-old would have.

They state that the handles are to help with balance only, and not to hold your weight. This is understandable as there is a possibility that with enough weight on them they could lose suction and break free.

However, on our marble shower walls, once in the handles were in place, I could put my entire weight (around 165 lbs) on them and they didn’t slide or pull loose – they didn’t budge. Was pleasantly surprised by their strength.

Have only had them for a few weeks, but no trouble so far. I will probably replace them after a year or so as they might lose suction after time as plastic/rubber ages – and will occasionally go test them to make sure they are still solid.

I bought this product to replace a similar item of another brand. I gave the other brand item to my senior neighbour and needed a replacement due to an injury. This unit would not adhere to any surface like the other unit did.

Sorry I can’t remember the brand name of my other unit but this Moen product is garbage. I have Moen faucets throughout my house and will recommend them to everyone but this product does not live up to their quality.

I returned this with no issues.

I bought this suction-attached grab bar so I wouldn’t have to drill holes in my new shower tile. I’ve attached it three times, following the instructions, and every time it’s fallen off within several hours, when I’m not even touching it.

I’ll be returning it.

Bought one for my wife, worked so well I got myself one. attaches easy and releases easy, the indicator is great to have so you know its connected.

Works great I wet suction cups first then attached to shower wall, I would not put all weight on handle to get in or out, gods to help with getting in

My balance is not good, especially when entering and exiting my tub/shower. This grip gives me the right assistance to get in and out safely. One of the pros is that it can be installed without damaging the fiberglass surface with screws or other fasteners and it can be removed and placed in a different location if needed.

I notice some comments about it not maintaining its suction but I have not experienced that. This thing is rock solid when properly installed. When installing it, moisten your fingertip with a drop of water and run it over each cup before placing in the chosen location and flipping the levers down.

This creates a solid deal with your surface. I am so pleased with this product, I am considering buying a second one so I have one on either side of the tub. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs that extra bit of help to keep steady when in the shower because it has made a huge difference for me!.

The product description was misleading and a few of the reviews mentioned this: The 12″ shower grab bar from Mommys Helper Safe-Er-Grip says fits shower tiles with at least 4″ tiles.

The 4″ square tile is too small a tile to avoid the grout line under the suction either straight or diagonal placement. It is useable on the tub edge but not the shower tile.

This item was a life saver for me to take a shower. I’m disabled and for me this was a great way for me to take a shower. Also my wife said that she was hope that we had them added to our shower to help me in an out of our shower area.

This item was a great buy for us. If anyone out there who need help in and out of the shower this is a great buy. Getting old is helloes but items like theses are great buys not just for disabled people but older people need help in an out of their shower.

Items can be added to shower or tubs were they can help you with the saver way in an out. Thank goodness for them!!!!.

My wife and I are now both Medicare eligible, which means our balance isn’t what it once was. A grab bar in the shower seemed like a good idea. We have an acrylic shower enclosure, so I was not keen on drilling holes in the walls.

This suction-installation device seemed like it was worth the try. I put it in about a week ago, and so far it has stuck like glue. It is not meant to take your full body weight, but rather to provide something to hold on to in order to maintain balance, and it has done that well so far.

Our shower enclosure is a ‘biscuit’ color, so it would have been nice to have color choices other than white. Actually, ours seem to have a tinge of rose color to it in certain lights. I was pleased when I opened the package to find that instead of aqua as the complementary color as shown in the photos, it was a light gray which matches far better.

I have explained to my husband that he can NOT grip it with his full weight when getting into the shower. Our tub is high/deep because it is a jet bath. That is good for me because of my back condition.

Unfortunately, it caused problems for him when he wanted to shower and he was not keeping up his hygiene because of fear. It is a wonderful product for maintaining his balance getting in and out and while showering and lessens the strain on me helping him.

I bought 2 different sizes and am considering getting a couple more shorter ones so he can have balance at all sides. I would definately recommend this product! I know eventually we will have to have professionally installed anchored grips, but this meets our needs for now.

SUction cup is too tempermental. Just placing it on a smooth surface and securing the levers does not guarantee that it will remain stuck. I have had it fall off the wall several times. Directions should include what to do if this situation occurs.

We purchased this for the bathroom, near the tub. My husband who is 71 wanted something to hold on to when stepping out of the shower. This is the perfect size. I was impressed with how well it adheres to the shower wall.

I put it up and tugged really hard on it to see if it would come off, it didn’t budge! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make their home a little safer.

I bpuoght one of these several years back. Loved it until I was holding on to it getting out of the shower and it popped loose and it was on the shower part and seem to be stuck firmly until this happened.

If you need a bar just for support I recommend getting one that screws in. I think these are very dangerous. Just my experience and openion. You be your own judge.

I put this Suction tub and shower bar in my tiled shower. I was able to find two tiles in just the right place, at just the right height. I cleaned them thoroughly to remove any soap film and dried them off.

I placed the suction cups on the two tiles previously prepared and flicked the switch for each cup. The suction was so tight I thought I was going to pull the tiles right off the wall! This is VERY secure!!! What a feeling of relief to grab onto this bar for balance or for location when my eyes are closed due to soap! I would buy this again AND I would recommend this to a friend! Great price too!.

Surprised I got these in one day. Instead in my shower after I cleaned the tile surface with alcohol. Opened the plastic tabs, then once place I couldn’t close the tabs. Thought they would break, I put so much pressure.

But finally got them closed. They are STUCK there. I think these will work just fine.

So thankful for these! Simple to install and the suction is strong! I am a large woman in a full leg cast and these help me to be safe and feel confident while showering. We have 6” tiles, so these adhere well.

They also suction well to the glass panel. So glad I bought two. Great value for the money.

The handle suctions almost completely on one end before I even clasped it. I gave it a test run and was impressed. Hope it lasts at least a year or two and will be all worth it. I know these are not permanent fixes but temporarily and securely did the job.

Okay for the price. End caps only held in place by a rubber ring rather than detents.

This is a good size bar and the suction cups hold it very securely to my tub surround. In fact, after I first put it up and tried it, I decided to position it differently. Even though I released the suction cups, I still had trouble getting one of the cups to release (I eventually got it).

This bar holds much better than I expected.

Wonderful product – life changing. I was always uncomfortable getting out of the tub-shower due to the sometimes slippery floor and wet feet. Now I am more comfortable and I feel much safer. Make sure the suction cups are on smooth tiles and not over the joint between tiles and it holds really well.

I bought this with the intention I could again take a bath instead of a shower. I have 1 hip and 2 knee replacements. Today I tried using for the first time. I attached it to the shower wall, a surround, as it says it works well with it.

NO it doesn’t. It slipped. More than 3 times I tried 3 places. I then took it off and attached to the side of the tub, and I pushed on it as it I was pushing or pulling to get up. It completely came off the tub.

It says the area has to be dry, it was. I could of broken a bone using this. I ended up taking a shower. It will be returned ASAP! I do NOT recommend!!!.

Mounted this on door jamb of our exterior doors to make it easier to set over threshold without falling. Matches our door trim colour and is low profile enough to not require removal when moving furniture in and out.

They say these are stainless so they shouldn’t rust exposed to the elements.

Quality of the bar is good. Quality of the screws is poor at best. If you break or strip a screw in the wall you’re screwed. I predrilled the holes through tile and sheetrock some of the screws striped before I could tighten them fully.

Lucky for me I was able to turn them out with a needle nose Visegrip. If they would have snapped I would have really been in a dilemma since I drilled through tile. I don’t understand how they could use poor quality screws like this, how much could they save.

If you buy this product I would go to your local hardware store and buy good quality screws. I used grey decking screws and put them on the bottom where you can’t notice them as much. It looks pretty good there rust proof and very strong.

I would have rated these product 5 stars except for this problem.

I’d give it a 5 star, but they put THREE (count ’em!), THREE stickers on the bar, two of which are plastic and come off ‘OK’ (but leave goo), and the third which is paper, and it simply peels off the top layer, leaving the bottom layer and more goo.

Sigh. What a nuisance. Can’t manufacturers buy Post-It type stickers? I had to use GooGone to get the goo off. Anyway, this thing is brutally solid, the welds are nicely done (probably by robots) and the finish is consistent throughout.

It’ll help me clamber outta the tub without ending up in a body cast. I’d rather it had white-headed screws not the stainless steel it came with (but painted screws tend to chip during insertion and look bad).

I like the 1-1/4″ diameter, because it’s, er,. ‘handy’!:-)We are considering getting a 36″ long one as well for another part of the tub area – so us old farts can play monkey-bars!.

These are quick and easy to install. I love the fact that they can be rearranged to adjust to my needs. Such an affordable solution compared to having permanent ones installed into my tile. I would hate to ruin the tile work or have permanent ones be a factor if I ever had to sell my home.

Very stable and I have never had any problem with them slipping or coming off. Also an affordable solution if needed for a short time like during a recovery from surgery.

I got these for my 90 friend who is staying at a Hotel for now. I got these to put up on his Shower for his safety. Major downfall, the Hotel would not allow it, unsafe walls? I had no choice but to return them.

I wouldn’t stay in that Hotel.

I bought this about 3 weeks ago and for 3 weeks i’ve been trying to get it to stick to my tiles in the shower. Nothing. Once I thought it was up, and during my shower it fell into the tub and hit my foot.

I thought it broke my toe. I highly recommend no one buys this.

Nice large size so you can use two hands, attaches securely, feels very stable, you can move it anywhere you want anytime you want. Arrived quickly, decent price. My sweetie needs help from back surgery, and ankle surgery.

The Ultra Grip handle is just that: The big suction cups are strong enough that (in a test) I lifted a 20 pound object with this handle. It sticks very well to a smooth fiberglass shower stall wall, and is reliable enough to grab if you lose your balance.

Don’t try to lift your entire body weight, however.

This is a well made product and I highly recommend it for anyone that needs help with balance or has limited range of motion due to injury or arthritis. I’m 75 and this grip bar has made it easier to enter and exit my shower!.
