20 Best Socks To Wear With Boots (2023 Updated)

This is my first time using Marino wool socks but I had high hopes as I was told they keep your feet drier. They are SUPER comfortable and fit well. I tried them out on a 6 mile ruck and while they felt good, my feet still felt wet at the end and got a small blister on my toe.

I ruck and run a lot using cheap socks from Costco and don’t ever have problems with blisters, so this was a bit disappointing. I’m going to assume that they need to be broken in a bit like shoes. For the high price tag I was hoping for more, but they are comfortable and thick and may be better suited for winter activity.

Being active duty military for 20 years having to wear boots, I know a thing or two about quality socks. I can honestly say these are superior to most…certainly to all I have ever tried before. I enjoyed them so much I recently ordered more.

I’m in my boots sometimes 16 hours a day! They have never slipped, felt tight, or felt uncomfortable. I highly recommend!.

Ok everyone listen up and listen up good. I take my socks very seriously. I have owned several kinds of socks from top brands such as, Carhartt, Under Armour, Nike, other “tactical brand” sock companies, you name it.

This is the only sock that has met every expectation that I require in a sock. Thanks to these socks, after wearing my boots all day in the Southern California heat my feet are still dry. These socks provide cushion on all the high impact areas of my feet and the calf portion doesn’t slip down.

The only issue that I have with these socks is that I now am going to replace all of my crew socks with these and these socks are pricey. But like I said, I take my socks very seriously. 5 Stars!.

Never thought that we’d be writing a review about socks, nevertheless here it is! We’ve just discovered Darn Tough socks a few weeks ago because we replaced our 40-year old Eddie Bauer goose down parkas that were leaking down with new North Face Expedition goose down parkas.

We also completed our new winter gear with North Face insulated snow pants, beanies, and -40 insulated boots. So, we needed warm socks too, went online and voilà we discovered Darn Tough. Now, we know a thing or two about socks having gone through literally hundreds of pairs in our 80-year lives and 60 years together so far! For winter, we ordered a dozen pair, 2 pair each of the heavyweight hunter over-the-calf length for our daily walks on the trail in our new snow boots, and 4 pair each of the midweight boot length socks for everything else we do and for all day indoors.

Of course, we couldn’t pass up Da Bear socks, living here in beautiful Alaska as we do. Come spring, we’ll order another dozen pair, 6 pair each of assorted midweight micro-crew length socks for our trail walks and every other kind of daily use.

We received our winter socks and they fit fine, feel great, look good, and are hands down the best socks we’ve ever had in a long lifetime of hundreds of so-so socks! Darn Tough run about 20-30 bucks a pair, so an average 25 bucks times a dozen pair is 300 bucks, and another 300 for a dozen pair each of summer socks.

Of course we could have done with half the amount of socks but we wouldn’t have had any back ups in case we lost some or something else happened, so we doubled up for peace of mind. Now 300 bucks each for a dozen pair of the best socks that you can buy and wear is darn cheap, less than a buck a day for a year and they’ll last far longer with proper care than a year and are replaced free to boot! Ya gotta be nuts not to jump at such a bargain … and we’ve certainly not grown old and wise not being able to see a great deal right under our feet.

So-so smart socks, forsooth, be smarter and treat yourself to a dozen pair of Darn Tough socks, your feet that literally carry you deserve the best, you’ll not regret it, that’s for sure!.

This was the sock that turned me onto Darn Tough Socks about a decade ago, and my favorite model sock (okay, they come in second to EVIL X DISSENT 8″ ULTRA MTN MERINO SOCKS for biking). It’s the most tightly woven wool sock and has a firm cush.

There is no sock fluff on my toes or lost wool over time. It maintains its shape. They have a great warranty. HOWEVER I bought a pair of Olive socks (great, just like my old ones) and a pair of Onyx, and the Onyx were of a totally different quality than the Olive ones.

They were about 3 inches longer and not as thick or cushy; a stretched out weave (or even a different weave pattern). I can still see these being a good sock, but it really surprises me that the quality is so different over different colors.

Maybe as Darn Tough rapidly expands over models and colors they are still figuring things out. I recommend sticking to the more classic colors in the Micro Crew – I had a problem with the vibrant color block ones where they were much thinner (though still the same size).

I recommend ordering several at once so you can know what the true magic of the micro crew really feels like. I wish that they kept the chocolate/blue color, as I think it’s really handsome. I also wish they came in size small and xs.

It’s very sad that the women’s colors are so different and that both genders don’t have the options of both sets of colors. I hate the women’s colors so I am really a small but get the medium men’s and they *just* fit.

(Usually a women’s 7. 5).

This is the first time I’ve ever bought this brand but with a Lifetime Warranty, I figured the manufacturer has quite a bit of confidence in their product. Sure enough, once I washed them on Gentle Cycle in the washer using cold water I could hardly wait for them to air dry by the next day to try them out.

Gently pulling them on and not jerking them into place left a little “play” that eventually offered more cushioning than I expected on a short hike (this may take some experimenting). A hot Texas day in hiking boots for 1.

5 hours was no problem for my feet. My feet were warm, not sweaty wet, with fully cushioned soles and toes. Getting home, I rolled them off so they’d be inside out to let the inside moisture dry better.

Couple of more hikes and they’re still cushiony soft, feet not soaking wet, then they’re dry and ready the next day. If I wear them through or develop a hole, you can bet I’ll follow through on the “Darn Tough” Lifetime Warranty for a replacement.

My preference has been to get their maximum percent of Merino Wool content and it’s paid off in confidence for longer hikes.

Got a few pair back in 2018 and fell in love. I’m a welder who’s hard on clothes and on feet all day. These actually by god stay up all day. (For me!!) but they stay up all day. These are now my go to for everything.

The pair from 2018 are just now getting wore out (I’ve picked up more along the way but tie dyed the original) best sock I’ve encountered so far. Dickies 👎🏻 Duluth trading has some decent but this is my preferred.

My husband wears a 13. 5 boot and likes his socks over his calf. I found these last year and gave them a try. Besides fitting him better than any other socks I have purchased for him, they are holding up Unbelievably Well! He wears them everyday – No Holes, they still stay up, and very minor pilling.

I am ordering more and will never ever order any other socks for him. I don’t want to mention competitor names, but I’ve tried a few other high end socks for him that cost more and these are a much better quality.

I recently bought a whole new set of socks (14 pairs total). It was finally time to retire my first set of socks that I bough 7 years ago. They started losing their elasticity about a year or so ago, but were still holding up ok for 7 year old socks, and I have big calves.

I wore these socks for 12+ hour work days and everywhere else after. No rips, tear or other issues except for the elastic finally giving. But these socks were 7 YEARS OLD. If you need some tall over the calf socks, these are for you.

A very comfy sock. I’m a carpenter, so I’m on my feet all day, and these are a perfect work boot sock. Nice padding to support the foot, and a soft material that feels great. I also go on long hikes and find the socks to hold up well.

The only reason I give 4 rather than 5 stars is the fact they take awhile to dry after washing. This could be annoying if you’re doing a multi day hike and need wet socks to dry over night/quickly.

The Men’s Invisible Active Sports Sock (black) is really thin. They don’t really add any comfort to the shoe. I’d prefer not to wear socks. I also purchased the Men’s Active Sports Sock (white). These are a bit more comfortable.

I don’t mind spending money on premium socks but I feel both these socks are expensive for what they are.

I have been wearing these USOA socks almost every day for over 20 years. I started wearing them while on active duty, and never stopped. I, or at least my feet, tend to be “picky” about my socks, and these have always been fine.

I may wear a thin sock liner under them for long hikes, but they generally work just fine alone for day-to-day wear in all seasons. I bought them now because my old stockpile from about 10 years ago ran out, but they appear to be exactly the same, except that “USOA” and the size are now marked on the inside of the sock at the top.

I feel that they MAY wear out a little faster than some other socks that I have worn, but the old USOA socks in my drawer have been in there for quite some time, so they certainly give reasonable service.

I stock up on them when I find them for a reasonable price because I will probably still be wearing them until I don’t need socks anymore. I had no problems with the order and the shipping time was reasonable.

These socks have been perfect for my everyday working environment. No stench. No stretching. No premature ware. Last longer than other branded socks advising they are “built for the working man”. The length is also appreciated and not obnoxious.

Will be purchasing more for a long time to come. Keep up the great work. Very satisfied customer.

Foot portion of the men’s size medium was extremely small. They went to my son @ Fort Bragg. He wears a size 11 boot. I wish I had purchased size large. The description of the medium was for sizes 10 to 13.

I thought size large for 13 to 15 would be too large but they would have been a better fit.

I bought these in October and they are soooooo comfy and warm. Great to bee-bop around NYC. Easy slip on and off and the small heal gives more support as opposed to the flat sole Hunter boots. Can walk in them for hours.

I have not purchased the Hunter boot socks that go with them so will have to get a pair for when the weather gets colder.

Hunter socks are designed for the hunters wellington boot. You can get the standard size or shirt size. I actually own one of each size. The short boot socks fit snuggly into the shirt boot and so too do the standard size.

You don’t need to wear any other socks if you use these as they are quite thick and would make you feet uncomfortably warm if you had too many layers not to mention the attempt to take the boot off. If you do just use the hunter sock you can get your boot off a little easier.

Wearing is easy; two options; you can either put the sock on first then slip your foot into the boot or you can put the sock in the boot then your foot. The former is the preferred method and the easiest so you don’t get any annoying ruffles in the sock.

Only giving 4 stars because although good they are in the expensive side for what they actually are – designer branded socks.

Love these!! I get them in a kids size because they’re cheaper but it’s the same thing! Super comfortable and make the boots look less ugly and boring. The socks also keep your feet warm all day. Especially if you go out in the snow these are the socks you want to wear!!.

They are pretty thick, probably going to be to warm for me. Probably won’t keep them. They seem to well made and fit well except for being taller and heavier than I like.

Nice and warm, at home or camping. My girlfriend loves them,, my Wife says there a bit Ichy. Can’t have everything . Just enjoy what you get i guess.

These socks are just ducky!! I love them! They are great for “fowl” weather! And… they are well worth the bill!

Socks are made in USA and arrived in a timely manner. The size LARGE are for shoe sizes 10 to 13. This wasn’t specified on the website, so I ordered the wrong size, but will exchange. My nephew said they were the kind he wanted, just too big.

Also, can’t return at Walmart, need to send them back.

Blew a hole in the side of one of these on the first day. No hard wear, just walking around the house with a thick pair of socks over them. Save your money and buy something of better quality.

The “white” socks were off – maybe a slight shade grey – but not as white as expected. And the thickness in the soles was not there – much thinner than expected.

These are my favorite wool socks! They are very comfortable, and super warm. I put them on and its almost immediate that my feet warm up. I wear them with my Georgia Romeos almost everyday. Will definitely be stocking up for the winter.

I don’t write reviews very often at all, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these socks. Also,they don’t wear out or lose quality after multiple washes. Very durable!.

Received these about a week ago and worn twice. The good, very nice cushion with luxurious loops for padding. The bad, the weave is loose and you can see through the fabric when stretching it. This makes them less warm and much less water resistant than tightly woven wool socks.

It also makes me wonder about durability which remains to be seen.

These are socks so the stated size range is correct for me. A large for a size 11.5 shoe. They are also comfy albeit a tad thin. I would buy again.

I have a variety of fits socks, all are excellent. I have a pair of “dress” fits, two pair of light hiking socks that I wear with my NB walking / light hiking shoes and three pair of thick boot / hiking socks that I wear with my high top hiking shoes.

All are very comfortable and fit perfectly. As I accumulate more Fits socks, I find that I wear fewer and fewer of any other of my socks because none reach the level of comfort and durability of Fits.

I have been wearing compression socks for years on a daily basis because of venous insufficiency and mild edema. Just recently, I saw an advertisement for Fits compression stocks and ordered a couple of pair, one nylon and one wool.

Based on the size chart on the Fits website, I ordered XL socks but, although very comfortable, the XL socks are just a little too big and tend to slide down slightly. I contacted Fits about this minor problem and exchange was offered.

Although not optimal, I decided to order one pair of large wool compression stocks for comparison before exchanging the XL. I found a perfect fit with the large size – exchange is now processing. As far as comparison of wool versus nylon compression stocks, I prefer the wool which for me are softer and more comfortable than the nylon.

I doubt ever buying any other brand of hiking or compression stocks in the future. Thank you for an excellent product.

I switched from SmartWool to Fits several years ago when the store I usually bought the SW’s from was out and recommended the Fits. I felt the difference as soon as I put them on. The name is appropriate because the fit is incredible.

The medium crew hiker is luxuriously soft, yet wears like iron. I wear them every day from Fall to Spring here in Michigan and get several years out of them. I would be lucky if a pair SW’s lasted through one.

I recently discovered the Heavy Expedition boot sock and just ordered 4 more pair! I also love the fact that they are made here in the USA and that they offer Active Duty, Vets and First Responders a substantial discount.

I have had a pair of actual very thick cable sweater socks for about 10 years. I found them in a thrift shop and fell in love! I wear them every winter around the house but the last year or two I have gotten holes in the bottom of them sadly.

it was time to replace. I thought I would surely be disappointed at least somewhat, but I am surprisingly happy with them – I bought one in each color. while not quite as thick as my originals, these will do nicely as a substitute.

I am wearing them now and they do not bind and they are almost as soft as my originals. very happy indeed!.

i like the material, I wear them at home when it’s cold. they are too thick for shoes. and also, the way they seam the socks is weird, big thick long seam line inside the inner sock area. so it will be uncomfortable to wear them with shoes.

other than that, the socks are cute, i got the pink.

I am glad I got these socks. They are so soft and comfy, especially during cold winter months. I would certainly recommend these.

I bought me first pair about 10 years ago and loved them. Unfortunately the quality has deteriorated and so do the socks! They develop holes very fast, and the material sheds even faster. These are the best socks I’ve ever owned, but I can not justify the cost when they don’t last.

If holes don’t develop, the. The material sheds and I’m left with patches that are nothing but the nylon, or spandex webbing.

I’m retired, but my dogs, a Black Mouth Cur male and a brindle Catahoula / Pit mix Cur female, are not! Every morning, every season, weekends included, we cross the highway close to our house and wander and kinda hunt and mostly walk and de-stress and commune with the outdoors in a reclaimed prairie area that includes about 90 acres of scrub and woods and trails and borders the railroad line.

We usually stay out for over an hour (longer, if a train gets between us and home) and never. NOT ONCE. have my feet been cold! I’ve always liked socks that came to my knees and rarely could find any.

I also buy them a little large, knowing that after several washings, they will tighten up a little. I usually get about 3-4 years use from each pair, but then I am using them every day. I normally buy 3 pair each Fall and sometime during the winter, a couple of old pair will give out in the heels.

I think it is just from how I walk and from always shoving them into boots. These are also the most cushioning I’ve found, and important feature to me since I have neuropathy. Please keep making them!.

I bought these to use with rubber hunting boots. The socks are bulky and handle moisture well. Over the calf length just right for rubber boots. Like them so much that I’m getting another pair while they are still available.

The soft bulk ot these would not be my first choice with stiffer leather hunting boots, but they are my favorite for use with rubber hunting boots.

I bought these socks 4 years ago from Duluth when I lived in Florida (but visited Maine) and in my review back then I promised to review them once I’d worn them a bit. Well, it’s a bit later than I expected but the time for a review has come.

This has been a pretty darn cold winter in Maine and I’ve been wearing these socks with a pair of quality hunting boots while out bird watching in snow & icy conditions, and I’ve gotta say that my feet have been warm, dry, & comfortable every time.

They are now my “go-to” socks in cold weather, especially when the temperature is well below freezing. They are so comfortable that I just ordered another pair this morning to wear while the first pair is being cleaned.

Although these socks would probably be comfortable in any weather, I especially recommend them for use in very cold weather.

The XL size is described as a fit for shoe sizes 13-15. No way. I thought I had finally found a roomy wool sock for my size 12 feet, but these are VERY tight fitting all the way up the calf. I don’t have large calves.

To be fair, my foot is on the wide side. These socks are as tight as compression socks, especially on the first wear. I needed a compression sock donning tool to put them on. I thought I’d have to return them, but the donning tool did stretch them after a couple wears.

(The sock donner from Sigvaris is excellent, BTW) The quality of the socks is excellent. This saga worked out well for me in the end. In my opinion the XL sock could work quite well on size 10-12 feet,.

These are my go-to socks when I go hiking in the mountains during the coldest part of the winter. They’re very comfortable to wear and they’re very warm. Best of all, they don’t itch. Most wool items make me itch so some degree.

But not these socks. They keep my feet toasty warm all day and there’s no itch at all. I own several pairs of these socks, but I always purchase a couple more pairs each time they go on sale. That way I have plenty on hand and I also have some put back, just in case Duluth ever discontinued them (they do that from time to time).

I wear a size 16 in boots and the size XL in these socks fit my feet perfectly. I’ve tried numerous cold weather socks over the years and these are by far the best. Don’t hesitate. buy a pair, give them a try, and see for yourself.

These are the nicest socks I have ever owned; by a ginormous margin. I had previously purchased another brand of merino socks, let’s just say they won’t quit, that were quite a bit more expensive than these.

Those socks were impressive in their own right when they were new; and MUCH nicer than any sock I had ever previously owned. They were very warm for as thin as they were, comparatively even to your ‘traditional’ thick winter/wool sock let alone what Worn is offering here, and they mostly helped with my sweaty feet/athlete’s foot problems.

Problem being they started to deteriorate after only the first winter season of wear. They kinda survived winter season #2, but were somewhat ragged to the point of see-through-edness and holes. They had to be replaced.

And, in comes Worn like a freaking rock star! It’s pretty apparent just by looking at them that they are of high quality. and then you pick them up, and ‘ooh!’ they are plush and oh so soft. AND THEN you put them on! *mind blown emoji* Holy $#&! are these things comfortable! I first wore them with my slip-on ‘old man’ skechers to the grocery store.

These things are super thin and light. definitely not winter attire. My feet were perfectly comfortable and warm for the walk to/from my car. Definitely could not say that with other socks and my slip-ons.

I normally wear PR soles recovery sandals around the house; all hardwood and tile. The PR soles help keep the feet warm in the Chicago winters and from getting socks mucked up with cat hair. When Worn says “full cushion with Arrowool™”, they aren’t joking.

I don’t think I would even need the PR soles anymore to keep my feet warm. I was so impressed I went outside and stood on my concrete porch yesterday afternoon; it was 24 degrees. I felt none of the cold concrete initially.

once again mind blown. I’ve never experienced this before, and I have ‘traditional’ wool socks that are of similar thickness to these bad boys. It took 3-4 minutes before it was time to put my sandals back on; feet not frozen but chilled a bit.

I stayed out there for another 6 min and my feet were shockingly warm and comfortable; hands were ice cubes though with no gloves on. Given this impressive performance outside with sandals on, I was concerned with how my feet would hold up with my composite toe Redwings on; especially since I am fortunate enough to be working inside a heated building presently.

Normally if I knew I was working inside a heated building, standard spring/summer/fall socks are utilized to prevent sweaty yucky feet. To my ultra pleasant surprise, I have had no discomfort at all for these first 2 days wearing the socks! I mean.

they’re thick enough to make my boots fit snugly. I thought FOR SURE my feet would have been drenched after a couple hours. Nope! No itchiness, burny-ness, discomfort, etc. None of that. My feet are shockingly dry after a 10 hour total day; 8 in boots.

I can’t say for certain, but it really seems like these will cure my winter time feet woes!!! I can’t really explain how exciting that is! Odds are I will be working outside on gravel/concrete and/or on decks for high rise construction in the coming months.

I will be back with at least one more review after utilizing these more extensively. I told two fellow electrician apprentices whom both ordered some. I’ll see if I can give them to report here as well.

I ordered two pair of socks. The ankle socks are ok, but appear to have a TON of fabric rubbing off both inside and out. My feet have a bunch of grey fabric on them after a day of use. They also have multiple loops of the spandex or elastic bands coming through the fabric and getting caught.

I’ve essentially ruined a pair in one days use. The boot length socks I got looked like they had been used for a year when I took them out of the packaging. Loose and freyed fabric all over the sock.

Reminds me of a really really old ski sock. Can’t say I recommend them; especially for the price.

I am a full time correctional officer and I am on my feet 12 hours a day maybe more. I wanted to buy a pair of socks to keep my feet dry and not smell like death after I take my boots off. I have been wearing these socks for about a week now and they don’t necessarily keep my feet completely dry but I have noticed I do not smell anything whenever I take my boots off.

I can tell a slight difference on how wet my feet get from regular cotton socks. The biggest thing is the smell. These socks keep the smell away and keep my feet a little more dry than normal socks. 10/10 recommend these for work socks.

When I decided to try some Enhanced Everyday socks, I ordered some Work Boot socks for Hubs to try out. He was very hesitant when I said they were wool blend, worried that they would be thick or itchy.

The second they arrived he put them on and I wasn’t sure he’d ever take them off again. He’s a motor equipment operator in Upstate NY, so we’re heading into snow plowing season, and just general coldness wearing work boots outside.

He has been thrilled and vigorously agreed when I asked if he wanted more!.

These weren’t exactly what I was expecting. First, they’re pretty thin as far as boot socks go, about as thick as a pair of the medium-weight casual socks I typically wear with my boots. That may be to better accommodate women’s boots which tend to fit closer than men’s, but unfortunately they didn’t suit my purposes.

Second, they’re surprisingly coarse for not being made of wool. That doesn’t bother me but it would be a dealbreaker for a friend of mine so I thought it worth noting. They fit though (I’m a size 8 women’s) and I have no doubt they are sturdy and would keep my feet warm and dry.

The boot socks are soft, warm and comfortable. Wick moisture away well. Thick without being too bulky. So far, they have kept nice elasticity through multiple washes. Perfect boot sock. Great price. Very satisfied.

The socks fit true to size. The material is a bit coarse compared to my other boot socks. I noticed after a few washes the amount of elastic was not maitained. Based on the price there are better quality socks for less money.

I do love Thursday Boots. The boots are the best.

I opened a new pack & while carefully teasing out the annoying plastic ties, I felt a hard chunk attached to the fabric inside. Turned out what appeared to be a chunk of dried mud (I hope). GAG. Hope Target will take these back even tho it’s past the unexpectedly short 1 month (!) return window.

For some reason, the other socks I purchased in the same order can be returned several months from now. Recommend you pass these by. Poor quality control & cheap construction.
