20 Best Snow Shovels For Seniors (2023 Updated)

I have used these shovels in my landscaping work for several years and have not found their equal anywhere. Super heavy duty. Just the right size to pair up with a 24 tine rake to create a clamp type scoop for leaves, branches, and all kinds of debris.

I only wish I knew about this shovel earlier, because it would have saved my back. Absolutely buy this shovel!.

I love that it was shipped by FedX. It came on Thanksgiving day. I assembled it the next day. (very easy to do, 2 bolts) I used it than to remove 3 inch’s of snow we got over night for my porch. I love the plastic cutting edge.

It will not cut my new flooring nor mark it with rust. So easy to use. I am so happy to have this well built snow shovel.

I’ve seen the complaints that this is too small. This is intended to be a compact, collapsible, emergency snow shovel. Granted Walmart’s description does not go into enough detail, but a little research will tell you that this is only 8.

5″ wide. It is meant to be kept in your vehicle for occasional use only, much bigger and it wouldn’t be compact enough. The blade and attachment to the handle is all aluminum, so much stronger than a lot of the plastic ones you see – especially in frigid temperatures.

The handle design allows for multiple configurations. This is my second one of these as I gave my first one to my daughter to put in her car.

I got this because I live in an apartment complex where the snow piles up pretty good in the parking lots, and when they plow, they push snow up in front/behind your call so you can’t move. I keep this shovel in the back of my truck so I can dig-out when needed.

Really less stressing. We not only cleaned the drive way, concrete in the back yard but also built a mountain of snow with family 🙂 Really the additional spring handle is innovative and makes everything effortless.

I do see a struggling neighbor who has a traditional shovel and wish I could just either offer mine or can even do theirs after mine with so much left over stamina 🙂 thank you for this product. Those who want to save all stamina can just buy automatic shovel/blower which is pricier but this is a good cheap option for those who can’t afford higher priced tools.

The shovel is built well enough, based on the limited use I’ve put it to. I don’t love it because the handle needs to be longer to work well for me, and the scoop is fairly narrow. I think I’m quite a bit taller than the person it was designed for (I’m guessing 5’6″?).

This means the scoop hits the ground at too much of an angle, causing the metal strip protecting the shovel edge to stick on the textured surface of concrete due to friction. It doesn’t easily slide over the concrete without putting up a bit of a fight.

Also, I should probably have expected this, but the blade is fairly narrow, making it not very useful for pushing snow around. All that said, the basic design is fairly ergonomic and the throw action works decently well.

If you’re closer to the apparent design height and your sidewalks are narrow, this shovel might be perfect for you.

Have you ever heard of someone purchasing an item because it had a one star review? If not, you have now. Some reviews are more of a reflection on the reviewer than the product reviewed. I’d been wanting to buy this type of snow shovel and this one looked as good as any.

It works as I expected it would, it is well made and the multiple grips are very convenient.

this is the best shovel ever. there is no lifting and throwing of snow envolved and no big piles of snow are produced. thats all you do is walk behind the shovel and push the snow where you want it to go.

the farther you push it over on the grass the less build up there will be. my back is happy. i shovel a lengthy three car garage driveway and a half front circle driveway with this shovel. the rivets do fall off but the shovel still worked well enough without the metal strip.

it fell off for me at the end of one winter season downstate MI, Clinton Twp. still worth the 30$. its the only shovel I will ever own. engineering genius. you think the manufacturer would fix the rivet problem.

This is my second one. The other shovel is still in one piece, but the metal strip came off, which is my only complaint. Some screws and nuts fastened it back on but it drags a bit on the cement. Other than that its a great snow pusher.

It works great in lighter snow but I don’t think it would work with the heavy wet stuff. I shoveled 10 inches of snow in one day, breaking it up into 2-3 inches at a time as the snow fell, but you never have to lift the shovel.

When the snow is deep you just slide the shovel with the snow over the mound on the sides and the slick surface of the shovel makes it slide off when you pull it back. Works great.

I use this shovel every winter. When the kids break it (LOL) I buy a new one. It is seemingly perfectly balanced just right for lifting leverage. Other “bent handle shovels” have caused my to gripe up a storm! You couldn’t lift right with them! This one is my absolute favorite.

I own about 4 of them. Also useful as a pusher. but by far. it is my choice as a lifter to MOVE THAT SNOW onto the tall piles where it needs to go. Has a metal scraper blade that helps get down to through the packed down snow.

My last word on the subject. if you need to move snow, you will want this shovel in your hands.

I’ve had a number of these over the years and use them frequently. I see it’s categorized here in avalanche safety gear. In some conditions— deep or wet snow —your partner will die before you dig them out with this soft, flexible shovel blade.

It just isn’t made for rescuing someone in the quick-set concrete that is avalanche debris. Likewise, a melt freeze crust of sufficient thickness will be pretty hard to penetrate, if you’re trying to dig a snow cave, for example.

I also question whether stability tests designed around rigid shovel blades can be performed with this, which flexes readily if you whack it. It’s fine for camping in soft snow.

This is a great little shovel like thingy. First, it does have some limitations. If you’re moving a lot of snow to make a large snow cave; this is not the best tool. If there was a real avalanche situation I would prefer a aluminum shovel with a handle to make the digging go quicker but this would be great if you thought that you’re getting close to the person and didn’t want to cause further harm by jabbing them with a metal shovel.

If I need something to work in tight places such as inside the snow cave or under a truck that’s buried up to its axels in hard pack snow, this is the tool I reach for (when it’s not in my pack it rides behind the seat of my pickup).

It also makes a great anchor point in snow if you need a tie point for guide lines for a tarp or are climbing a steep snow bank. Since it’s somewhat flexible, you could (in theory) use it as a splint.

It also makes a nice dry spot to sit in snow. I had a friend who used his as a impromptu rain hat when we got caught in an unusually warm winter trek (ran a strap from each handle and tied it under his chin, it worked pretty good).

Over all a great multipurpose tool that doesn’t add that much weight to your load. Well worth the relatively small amount of money they cost.

I purchased this ahead of a snowmobile trip from Diamond Lake to Crater Lake in Oregon. It slipped easily into the external storage pocket of my Flash 45 pack. When the rookie driver buried the snowmobile in deep, soft snow off the trail the Snow Claw helped me move lots of snow in a hurry and we were back on the trail in no time.

This will go with me whenever I head out on skis, snowshoes or, on rare occasion, snowmobile, in winter conditions. Makes a good sled/glissade device too!.

Let me clarify. The handle is nice, but when trying to shovel anything other than light snow, the shovel flexes too much. If there is any ice, it does not get under it easily because of this flexing.

Next, I purchased this at Lidl. The handle is not the same as the picture. There is no adjustment for handle length. It is solid without the ability to adjust. This is not a reason for the rating though.

That is because the shovel is not stiff enough to get the frozen slush that happens around here. Third is the durability. I’m not sure how well this will hold up. The wear strip on the edge is what looks like to be an aluminum alloy strip.

It shows wear from one use on our concrete driveway and sidewalk. The wear strip is the one part that has been an issue on more than one snow shovel that I have owned. The shovels that work best on snow and ice have been the metal shovels, but the snow and ice tend to stick to them.

This one is not as effective, but the snow and ice was not sticking to it much, so that is my opinion.

This shovel has a great design, but is garbage with the aluminum shoveling edge!!! Aluminum is too soft and does not slide over cement!!! It actually makes shoveling more difficult!!! In fact, the aluminum is grinding away on the concrete!!! I have only used it several times, and the edge is not looking like it will last the two year warranty!!! I bought two of these! What a huge waste of money!!! Whomever at Sloe Joe allowed this to go into production, should be fired!!!.

Every house should have one of these, the assisted handle is genius! As I age, the shovel is a godsend and saves me time and pain. No more bending over to shovel and the position of the handles makes it feel lighter and easier to pick up and dispose of more snow.

I’ve owned this shovel for many years now, and it’s still doing it’s job during NJ winters! This is certainly a 5-star product! (BTW This is an honest, unpaid, non-incentive review).

This shovel is much lighter than my old tube-steel handled shovel, but the aluminum-tube and plastic blade combo seems sturdy. For me, the “Z” ergonomic handle is much easier to use than a straight handle.

I bought two, and they nest nicely in storage. I figure the 10 year warranty means the manufacturer is confident it will hold up. Easy assembly of a new shovel is required. Followup: Both shovels were put in service Jan2018, in substantial snow depths and sometimes very cold conditions.

As of mid-Feb2019 one plastic blade had a crack, but was still usable. I called the U. S. manufacturer Rugg, and was cheerfully shipped a replacement blade.

I was looking for a shovel with a metal bottom edge. I was quite pleased with all the choices. I took one of each down to figure out the sturdiest that would be effective and not weigh too much. This was it.

I used it recently on our ten inch snowfall – it was a great choice.

It is a whole lot better then using plastic and aluminum shovels. It is great for cutting through pack snow banks. You can use to break thin ice if you have to. The edge does wear down. Of course I am doing more then the average person using it to clear side walks in ME.

At the end of winter season I grind off the jag it edges and square it up again. If I was just using it at home use it would last for years. The only improvement I wish they would make is use thicker steel.

So the edge won’t wear out as fast. Yes I highly recommend it over expensive plastic and aluminum shovels any day. Doesn’t break like plastic shovels do or crumble up like aluminum shovels do.

This is the shovel from my childhood. A real shovel, not cheap plastic junk that has to be replaced yearly. This shovel with easily go through refrozen snow/ice with no issues. It will go down to asphalt/concrete without wearing away quickly.

This will easily last for the next 20 winters. Do the math and get the right tool now and save your money in the long run. I would recommend this to anyone.

This is a good quality snow shovel for a low price and should last you several years if you’re not too hard on your snow shovels. When you go to buy one of these, I recommend you turn the shovel upside down and take a close look along the leading edge of the shovel blade and look for one that’s as close to perfectly straight as you can get.

They are not all created equal. I looked at a dozen or so of them and found only one that was nearly perfectly straight. Most were warped to various degrees so when you go to shovel snow off a flat surface like a sidewalk, only the low points of the blade edge will be touching the ground and you’ll always be leaving behind streaks of snow and ice where the blade is warped up and not touching the ground.

That means you’ll have to waste time and do extra work to scrape the same area an extra time or two to pick up what you missed the first time. Some of the shovels I looked at were quite wavy along the leading edge so would leave lots of large streaks of snow and ice behind.

Out of the 12 or more shovels I looked at, I only found one that had a really straight leading edge so that’s the one I bought. It does a terrific job of scraping the snow and ice off the ground without leaving any streaks behind so it’s worth the little bit of extra time it will take to look them all over and make sure you get the best one at the store.

It was well into the New Year, so I was concerned about stock, but this Canadian Tire had several choices at different prices, quality, and style. This one had a good stock and was on sale; and would be the “good” in good, better, best I would say.

It does everything well, but is mono coloured (not pretty), the has a good scoop edge, but not aggressive, the handle is wooden with a “very good” connection support that was slightly loose but I believe tightened up almost immediately with use.

I was very impressed with the purchase, and would recommend. a good shovel that does not break your budget.

I didn’t have much expectations about this shovel when I bought it on a whim while it was on sale but it has really surpassed my expectations. It’s so lightweight yet so effective in moving snow that it almost makes the task of removing snow effortless.

As of now, I’ve only used in fluffy snow. I’m not sure how it would fair in a wet or heavier type but for a typical snowfall, it’s fabulous. It is a little short in width so it will take you a little longer than if you were using say a 26″ shovel.

Build wise seems decent but the section where the blade attaches to the handle was slightly loose. I tightened the screw up and all seems good for now. For the price, I think it’s a great buy.

Its a snow shovel and I used it last night. Pushed snow great as well as shoveled. Hood product.

Had this one for a couple years, its not a good shovel. It dents and bends way too easily. The ‘ergonomic’ offset is nice at first but it becomes a pain for lifting and maneuvering the shovel. The basin isn’t deep enough for lifting bulk snow, and it isn’t sturdy enough for pushing or chipping.

Just a disappointment. I’ve taken to leaving it out front of the house hoping someone just takes it.

An expensive snow shovel that should be built better. The D-handle is only attached with one screw. This came loose with a few uses. I had to install two additional screws to hold the D-handle one. Removal of dry/wet snow not much of a problem.

Add some ice the edge of shovel starts to buckle. The thin steel blade under the aluminum blade does a poor job of securing the edge of the shovel. The edge on my shovel is buckle in several areas. In order to “fix” I had to add additional rivets to get the blade’s edge straight.

I do not know how long this fix will help the shovel. This shovel is only good light snow removal. Push it and you will have a broken snow shovel.

Ergonomic handle means less back stress, this, coupled with an ideal width and length of the shove blade make shoveling heavy snow easier and quicker. The reason it’s not a good value is the lack of general availability to American Nationals within “The United States of America” 1781.

Looked high and low and was happy to find this 14″ wide shovel with Aubuchon on-line. The ergo shaft in aluminum and D handle was also what was required. Perfect! Make in Canada also made it wanted. It was in stock and delivered to our nearest store promptly.

Product looks sturdy, but delivered way too late!!!. Snow has already melted. Because of Texas snow electric power meltdown, shipping went to crap as well. so now I have to wait 100 years before I can use this.

I bought one of these shovels at a flea market. While the handle was a bit loose, the blade works extremely well to clear ice and snow of sidewalks or driveways. We live on a pond in North Dakota. I recently started taking this shovel out on the ice rinks/paths that our neighbors have been clearing for public ice skating.

The blade gets down to the surface of the ice and lifts off bumps or snow particles. It makes for a fantastic skating surface. It is not for lifting and throwing snow, but for pushing and clearing. Great product!!!.

This is my second snow pusher from Garant. I really like the shovel. It moves a lot of snow in a short period of time. It is fairly light weight compared to steel pushers that are the same size. When this one wears out, I hope Garant still makes this model.

It was more expensive than other shovels but I feel it is worth it. I recommend this shovel.

This is a contender. The quality is typical MSR i. e. good, it’s pretty solid for a telescoping shaft, and it extends as fast as you can pull in an emergency. The shaft is a good length for maximum leverage when fully extended, or you can use it short if you’re scooping out a snow cave or similar.

There are well-placed holes for turning the full-size blade into a snow anchor, and i like the ‘serrated’ edge for breaking up ice, a novel idea. The ‘male’ ends of each shaft piece are bunged to stop snow entering also.

For those of you that count the grams, mine weighs 713g on my digital scale. Bottom line, it’s not cheap, but if you’re only going to buy one ‘full-size’ shovel, you should put this one on your shortlist.

Worth every penny. Don’t waste your time and money at on shovels at big box home supply stores. The shovel is made of some type of plastic and rubber mix composite. The handle is the longest I could find.
