20 Best Single Speed Bikes Under $300 (2023 Updated)

I purchased this bike brand new from someone on FB market. It was NEW, assembled at REI bike techs. I have spent copious amounts of money trying to fix this bike. It just has so many issues, mostly due to how it’s made.

The gears are cheaply made and it causes the chain to slip because the gears aren’t accommodating the chain mechanism. I’ve taken this bike to several bike shops to have it fixed and they are unable to fix it without completely redoing and installing new gears, and chain, and chain mechanism.

It’s honestly a waste of money. You’re better off investing a few more hundred dollars in a bike brand name than to mess around with something like this bike that’s so cheaply made. I feel bad writing this review but it is honest and I think people should know what they’re getting into.

Retrospec customer service was quite unhelpful when I reached out in regards to helping me find parts that needed to be replaced claiming that the bike shops I’d taken the bike to were incorrect about their diagnosis.

Ok but still the bike is unridable, help me ride this product that you sell. I’ve spent about 500 on this bike total at this point purchasing it and getting it fixed up at bike shops, buying parts for it etc.

REI won’t buy it, nor will Play it Again Sports, nor will any other of the 5 local bike shops I tried selling it to in Seattle. ALL of them said that the brand wasn’t something they were able to sell in their stores- especially with the gears needing to be redone it would cost them more to fix it then they would get selling it.

Aside the gears and chain, the physical materials this bike is made out of are so cheap. The break handle completely fell apart in my hand the first time I tried riding it. The lever broke in half. This is not due to assembly error but it’s just the material / poor design.

This bike looks so cute and seems like it would be great but the mechanism for the gears does not accommodate the chain system which is what is causing the chain slipping that SEVERAL other reviews are mentioning.

I hope this review is helpful for the less experienced bikers like myself. Just go to a Sporting Goods store and talk to someone in the industry. Simply look at the amounts of listing on FB Market of people trying to get rid of these bikes in your area.

Let me start by saying I’m no bike aficionado but I’ve ridden my share of bikes recreationally over the years. I’m 61 and this bike is great! Came well packaged and was easy to put together. It’s lighter weight than I expected and it’s really a simple, elegant riding machine.

The fact that it’s only one gear makes it a smooth, quiet ride (no derailleur or chain noise). And even though it has skinny tire, the ride isn’t harsh at all (but I only ride roads and pavement). The seat is comfortable for a bicycle seat.

It I want cushy, I get off my bike and sit in my recliner. I debated what size to get and after reading the reviews decided on the medium even though I’m 5’10”. I’m glad I did. The upper crossbar fits comfortably under my 32” inseam.

I got the Slate color and the black rims and brown seat and grips look classy. It’s a good-looking, simple, elegant ride and fir $299 I don’t think you can beat it.

I got this bike to commute to and from the gym and run short errands. I was not expecting to have so many issues. The bike owners manual they give you is very general. They give you the same manual no matter which bike you get.

I’ve had multiple flats after only 2-3 miles of riding. The manual does not provide information on how to fix this issue. It just says take it to a shop. After more inspection it seems the rim tape is not covering spoke holes and my tube keeps going flat in the same spot.

Perhaps I caused the issue and this is all user error, but I’ve been really unhappy with the bike. I was expecting something more beginner friendly and perhaps some more resources. I’d recommend not setting up the bike yourself and taking it to a shop.

Just keep in mind the costs on top of the purchase price before buying.

I really have never loved a bike more. This has completely blew my expectations away. It’s amazing quality and such a smooth ride. Definitely would recommend this to someone.

I usually never leave reviews, but I need to with this bike. Everything about this bike was so easy, the ride was so sturdy, and the brakes are AMAZING. Definitely a good bike if you are considering.

Very grateful for the easy seat adjustments. I tried this because I want to get it for my teenage son who is still growing and I wanted this to last awhile with him. It definitely is going to!

I bought this bicycle hoping it would serve specific purposes. I wanted something inexpensive that I could ride at the beach, and not worry too much when I leave it unattended for a few hours. I wanted a simple bike with steel frame that I could fix completely myself (my other bikes had to go to the shop for hydraulic disk brakes, and one for seized in hub shifter).

I really liked the quick delivery (and I mean quick). I ordered Monday evening, received Wednesday. Actually got here before my seat and pedals I purchased for it. Assembly time was under an hour (that includes unboxing).

Everything was there and in good condition. I like the big tires. They’ll be great cruising the boardwalk. I’m a frequent bike rider and can be tough on them, so I assumed that, at this price (and based on other reviews), there would be things I would want to change.

And that is the case. I knew I would be changing seat and pedals on day one (but the bike beat them here, so that will have to wait). Seat looks good, but very uncomfortable after a very short time. But, like I said, I planned on swapping out anyway.

I read reviews that were complaining about the pedals, but the feel good to me. Either way, that’s an automatic switch, because they started making my old favorite, MKS Grafight pedals again. I liked the look of the low bars, but just not comfortable for me, and will have to be changed.

I need an more upright riding position. One of the reasons I made this purchase, was because I was thinking about putting that style of bar on a couple of other bikes I’m working on, so I’m glad I got to try before buying more expensive versions for the other higher-end builds.

If a bike could be “commercial grade”, this one would be it. Everything from the frame, brackets, chain, handlebars, wheels, wide pedals, are stout. Coming in at 34 pounds, it’s still a reasonable weight.

Rides smooth. Seat is comfortable. Single speed still challenges the legs on hills, but this one is not as tough to pedal as others. This bike is somwhere between a light coaster and a light mountain bike.

Does well on gravel and grass. Very pleased.

Do you know how hard it is to find an adult-sized, freewheel, single-speed, go-anywhere bike like this? Sure, the gear ratio makes the hills a bit hard to climb, but I’d much rather get my workout than out-pedal myself on level ground.

Very happy with my purchase. The bike is great and out of the box with the right amount of time tuning it rides great. Replacing the brakes and other parts are highly recommended as they wear. Its a snappy fun ride that is a steal at the price.

I’m wondering what a 48 or 50 tooth crank replacement would do over the current 46. (Speedier😁) Unfortunately, the wheels it came with were so out of true they would not spin freely on either end radially and laterally.

A bike shop trued them the the best so they would roll fine but still had visible wobble. I doubt this is a common issue.

I absolutely love this bike. Got a different handlebar for more angle and comfort but that’s just personal preference. The one thing I’ll say is that I got it to ride in NYC and with the number of potholes and general state of the pavement I looked into getting slightly bigger tires but it doesn’t seem like the frame offers enough clearance.

Because it’s such a simple bike I think people easily will customize it a little and that’d just be something to think of design-wise, wouldn’t take much. Great purchase and value, came with the necessary tools for assembly which wasn’t specified but a good surprise.

It’s light and zippy, simple but that down tube shape gives the design just a touch of edge. Got it in white so I could slap reflective tape all over it for both safety and to protect the frame. Got many compliments already.

I love this bike. I do 20 km 4 times a week. My bike stays outside all summer and I’m not afraid someone will steal it as there are no other single speed bike in my town. The seat is too hard, I changed it for a 40 dollar gel seat and now it’s great.

I BOUGHT THIS BIKE FOR EXERCISE AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’M GETTING! I have gained 6 lbs of muscles in a month and I’m 63 years old. No pain, no gain! I WILL BE USING THIS BIKE TO Zwift on a dumb wheel on trainer with Wahoo cadence and speed sensor in winter.

Just can’t wait. If you can find it on Amazon, just buy it!.

Overall I like the way the bike rides. It is easy to pedal, even uphill. But I hate the color! It is NOT the same pink as in the picture. It is closer to lavender than pink. I should have traded it out when I picked it up, really wishing I had.

Bought this bike 2 months ago for my wife’s Birthday. She loved it! Classic style and colors were perfect. The quality and customer service provided was excellent. Will be looking soon to upgrade the kids bikes as well!.

Bought this for my daughter and she loves it. She wanted a purple beach cruiser and this one fit the bill perfectly. The beach bikes crew have been very up front and helpful if needed. I would certainly recommend this bike and seller to anyone.

I have put hundreds of miles on my bike since 2019, most of the miles being this year and I cannot recommend this bike enough. My dad went and bought a geared mountain bike from academy of a higher price, had many problems and even swapped it and still have problems.

I let him ride mine and he wanted to buy one. So we both have one and they are great. You will probably want to change the seat out if you’re riding for more than an hour or so, but besides that, everything is ready to ride once you assemble it.

Great construction and would buy again.

Really having a blast with this bike. It was easy to set up, came with all the tools, and I trust the assembly I did way more than some schmo at Big 5 or Walmart or something, which are the only places you’ll find a comparable pricepoint.

The parts seem like the best sourced quality available that could still turn a profit at such a low MSRP–as in not name brand, not top of the line, but not chincy-this-is-going-to-break-immediately cheap.

I got the bike for something to cruise around town casually and maybe play some AR mobile games. I live in a relatively flat area and fixed gear is low cost and efficient and perfect. This is my first fixed single gear bike and I just couldn’t be happier.

Love the total control. It’s too much fun. I’m sure this bike is hated by the SF bike snob types, but oh well. At $199, it feels like I robbed 6KU here. The 6KU Fixie is a great beginner intro fixie at a price you can afford to pay when it gets beat up with use, if it gets stolen, or if you end up not liking fixies or grow bored with biking in general.

I love it its freaking awesome it wasnt that hard to set up it just looked really hard but in reality its very simple. the bike is awesome. its my first fixie and to be honest its a whole new experience.

the flip flop hub is a cool feature to if i ever just want to coast around. the bike itself looks amazing. its sleek and simple. not to flashy. 5 out of 5. and the only problem i had which isnt really a problem for me was that one of the reflectors that go on the wheel came broken off but its just a little detail i would have probably taken them off either way.

In searching for a lightweight, low or one gear bike that I could carry up into my third floor walkup apartment, the single speed bikes by Solé kept rising to the top of the list and I’m so glad I took the chance on one! This is my first single speed bike ever and it’s so much fun! It gets lots of compliments when I’m out and about, and doesn’t look like other bikes I see on the road, which makes me feel pretty hip.

The one thing I didn’t think about in purchasing a lock is how wide the tire and rims are together – it hasn’t been a problem in finding an appropriate spot to lock it up outside for a few hours, it just takes a bit of wrangling to line everything up to be secure.

Grateful for Solé in making an affordable bike that can be put together by an individual who doesn’t know much about bike assembly, and light enough to be carried on a shoulder up and down flights of stairs!.

I can fortunately say that my experience, from delivery, setup to actually riding, have been tremendous. Building took thirty minutes and was straightforward. Having never ridden a single-speed though, I was nervous that the bike trails that are near my house were too hilly to enjoy it, but I quickly got into the swing of things and I genuinely felt a synergy with my bike that I imagine adept ice skaters feel.

The light frame makes maneuvering graceful and I feel like I’m able to build and sustain speed quickly. I can’t say if this bike would be as enjoyable if you’re used to having multiple gears, but for my experience I got exactly what I had hoped for.

Love this bike. I was looking for a single speed for casual rides around town and with the kids. I didn’t want to break the bank since I don’t ride nearly as much as I used to and this is perfect. Love the feel of the bike & color way This bike gets compliments all the time.

Bike comes nearly assembled with all necessary tools to finish & for about 20 mins to complete the rest. I 100% recommend buying a Sole to anyone thinking about it.

This bike is very sturdy and reliable! You can bring it anywhere, its lightweight and fits in any car. The fold is quite simple, folds in seconds with minimal effort. Aside from the product, the customer support here is excellent in handling questions and concerns about your purchase.

They are very professional and understanding. I believe this can be enjoyed by big kids, as well as active adults who wants to have some exercise outdoors or bring along this portable bike in parks and trails.

Vilano Urbana Single speed is great for flat roads, fits really well in the back of an SUV, indeed it occupies only 35% of the space, leaving room for other things! My commute is about 5-6 miles with only 100-200ft elevation gain.

Single speed and coaster brake mean less moving parts and hence low maintenance. The only (and the biggest) drawback is, there is only one brake (rear-coaster): So imagine yourself riding a downhill (about 20+mph) and the chain drops from the cog or buckles-up, there is absolutely no-way to stop the bike! This is really scary (and I witnessed this situation myself 🙁 ).

So make sure you tighten the chain appropriately.

Love how simple this bike is. It came mostly assembled & only required some minor tweaking out of the box. Very light weight and less things to break without hand brakes and gears. Very similar to my name brand folding bike but at half the price.

I’m very happy with it!.

Now finally after some hassle my bike rides smooth and effortless. The pre-installed tire didn’t seat into the rim properly and wobbles, so I found a local bike barn to fix that, and sole bicycle reimbursed the $20 labor.

But the tube burst one day later in a hot day. I went to the bike shop changing the tube, and it burst again after a day. I’m pretty sure there is no mishandling or over pressure. Finally I bough new tires and tubes and mounted them myself.

No more problem since them. The frame, fork and drive train are solid build. Hope Sole could source better tires in their future product.

The Duke II exemplifies the term “blah. ” It’s just ok. There are no bells or whistles to mention or highlight (literally). It doesn’t even have a kick stand. It is the most basic, uninspiring bike I’ve ever seen.

It works, so I can’t say it’s all bad, but that’s about it. Regardless, I do not plan to purchase another bicycle from Sole.

Love the Duke II! Once I unboxed it, it looked even better in person. Assembly was quick and easy, only thing missing was grease for the pedals. Had it assembled and ready to go within an hour and this was the first bike I assembled in over 15 years! Price point was great for what you get and I have been riding it daily to work for the past two weeks.

I bought this jacket mid-October after doing some research on the Fjallraven Raven M jacket. It’s a well made jacket with tough stitching and durable zippers/buttons. This jacket is a shell type jacket meant for going over a sweater in the winter.

They’re sized a bit bigger than normal so where I usually fit an XL I ordered a L and it fit perfectly, I’m 5’10 at 190lbs with broad shoulders. The jacket is a bit pricey but you’re getting a top shelf jacket for what you pay.

It has a semi-tailored look and looks great as well! It’s tough to find Fjallraven in Western Canada so I ordered from Mountain Steals and the shipping was speedy and the customer service reps were very helpful! Would recommend ordering this jacket from Mountain Steals 10/10.

Purchased in Matte Red. Single speed gets me around town or up and down the hard pack beach. Comfortable saddle. Bike arrived in perfect condition due to solid packaging. Easy assembly of front wheel, handle bars, saddle and pedals.

Purchased from another source white fenders, a red basket, and red cup holder, all of which add to the appearance and functionality. Expect several years of cruising enjoyment from my new Firmstrong Urban bike.

I am incredibly satisfied with my Firmstrong purchase! The bike for one is absolutely stunning. It turned out better than I envisioned and the matte brown really has a gorgeous shine to it. More than thankful to receive a tool kit for the bike as well.

If I had one thing to address it would be the bike handles. The foam-like handles can wear and tear rather quickly, but I will be buying another in the future.

I purchased the bike in November 2021 and didn’t received the bike until March 2022. I didn’t receive any emails telling me about the delay nor did I get a confirmation email with the confirmation number until I called them.

The staff were extremely nice and helpful. When the bike arrived it was packaged very safely. The building process was simple but it took longer than expected because the steps weren’t the best explained.

I’m 4’10 in height and I got the smallest size possible yet it’s still too big for me. I wouldn’t really recommend it for small folks. The bike is beautiful though the brake isn’t as smooth as I’d like it to be.

Overall, a 3/5.

So I got this bike as a gift for acing my moms college statistics class (she’s finishing her degree and you know math isn’t her thing so I did what any daughter would do and I stepped up). We live out on the East Coast so we have about a 4 month window to soak up all the sun before seasonal depression hits, so obviously we need to over-compensate and buy cool stuff that makes us happy.

Which is how I convinced my mom to get me this bike, and let me tell you, this bike is the best. I’ve biked to Fenway, around the Charles, down the cape, heck I even keep up with the road cyclists here (snobby crew—never chill when I’m passing them in my single speed but that’s their problem).

I would recommend this bike to anyone. It gets you where you need to go, you look chill and stylish, you make cyclists question their $4,000 bike, it’s versatile (city to beach). So thanks mom!!!!!!!!!.

Very nice single speed bike. Delivered quickly and final assembly took about 20-25 minutes. Rides nice and have gotten several favorable comments. A few people have noted it does look like a Ghost Bike.

One interesting thing- you can see and feel on the down tube that two darker stripes had been painted over with the white paint. Was another model repainted white?.

My husband and I started our full time RV living/working remotely journey 9 months ago and travel to new locations every 4-6 weeks. I knew I wanted a bike to enjoy in the RV parks and for our exploring adventures that allow biking.

I had a nice hybrid bike that I had to sell because I developed carpal tunnel and the pressure on my hands leaning down to the handlebars made biking very uncomfortable. I’m also a plus size woman so I took all of this into consideration when researching the right bike for me.

I found the EVRYjourney, and it met all my requirements, and it did not disappoint. I LOVE this bike. The cruiser style fits me well, especially the handlebars, and it was easy to assemble and adjust so that I ride comfortably.

The seat is even comfortable, and I’ve never had a bike before where I didn’t immediately order a new seat. I added the lift off basket and rear rack bag to have plenty of storage for biking essentials and purchases.

We recently biked the 8. 2 miles around Mackinac Island and my EVRYjourney made the ride so easy and enjoyable. I highly recommend this bike if you are looking for comfort, style and great quality.

I live in a very humid, tropical environment where sulfur emissions from a prior lava eruption continue to pollute the air and cause everything metal to rust. After our 1960’s Schwinn cruiser bicycles became rusted beyond repair, I searched online for new bikes.

The sixthreezero bicycles looked really cool and the prices were fantastic. I did not expect the quality to be anywhere near as good as it is! It is extremely comfortable and a breeze to pedal also! The paint color is very retro and cool; people compliment the bike whenever I ride Amazingly, TWO years after I have purchased it, my bike has NO rust anywhere! This is practically unheard of in our location! We live 5 blocks from 3-month long active lava eruption that continues to emit sulfur into the air three years later! If I had to say something negative about the bike, I can’t think of anything I would change about it! Their customer service team is top notch! Anytime I email them, they respond almost immediately! I would recommend this bicycle for men and women of all ages.

I researched many bikes and manufacturers before settling on Sixthreezero. My research paid off as this bike is well made, easy to handle and transport and a joy to ride. The bike arrived well packaged by Sixtrhreezero to prevent damage in transit.

The only assembly required was the handlebars, seat and pedals. The instructions were super simple for a novice bike rider. Everything is solid and well made. The paint job is beautiful and stands up well to riding.

I have had my bike for almost a year. The handle bars and seat were simple to adjust. Anyone with either lower back pain or knee pain would find this bike easy to use. I have both and I bought this bike as it was advertised to be easy on both issues.

I was not disappointed. I ride for about an hour at a time and I am not sore or in pain afterwards. There is no leaning over on the handlebars. You can sit up straight. The seat is wide, plush and comfortable.

It provides the needed stability for occasional bikers. There are reflectors in both front and rear and on the pedals. Itnis easy to add lights in back and front for night riding. The rear rack is super useful for carrying those needs items for beach or park.

My family loves this bike! Dismounting is easy too as the front bar is curved down allowing for step in mounting and dismounting. A big favorite for my husband. I would and have recommended this bike and this company to friends and family as the bike is well buolt ans the company super responsive to inquiries.

I dunno if it ‘s just me, however, I just got not long ago the kent blue 700c hybrid bike, put it together, no issues, love it. However, I like the fixie thruster better, due to the colors, I thought I was the same bike, but after getting it, a little disappointed.

It’s got the old school brakes, which is ok, but it pulls something terrible to the right, like a vehicle with bad alignment. I’m no bike expert, but is the right?? I hate to throw a fit if it’s supposed to act this way.

When I’m looking down while riding, I can see the left side of the front wheel more than the right side. It’s really weird, cause I’ve never experienced such a thing. I really havent identified the problem with the bike, everything seems straight.

Maybe I’ll figure it out in due time???????.

I’ve had two previous Kent thruster fixie and they were really fun. Not perfect but great for the price. This last one I ordered had a problem. The front wheel would not fit onto the fork. Pretty frustrating.

Walmart took the bike back with no problems. I may or may not try ordering another one….

Item arrived with front tire bent, but still ridable with adjustment. Only 1 week ride on standard bike lane and side walk for commute and only 2 miles per day. Tire quality is so low so thin that it got penetrated 3 times within the week of riding by literally any tiny stuff.

Every time it got flatted I have to walk to the nearest store to fix the flat tire. Bought a repair kit but you simply cannot rely on it and repair your tire every single day. Low quality is fair for the low price but it is too much frustration, hassle and harass.

Got another road bike from Costco for $339 and no issue so far for 1. 5 months riding SAME PATH, and still going. Hope my experience helps others avoid the low quality cheap made bike, not worth the effort.

Return is another hassle, you have to disassemble the bike to return and FedEx pick up does not have exact time, you got a whole day window to wait for them.

ordered bike online delivered to home. Front wheel was a disgrace. my brother had to adjust every spoke to make it true. was very wobbly. assembling front brake difficult and remains somewhat loose. it is a very pretty bike and look forward to riding it.

Next time Im willing to pay more and go to a real bike shop and buy one assembled. I feel like this was slapped together since it was mailed to me.

Awful cheap bicycle. The pedal unscrewed at the middle of the road, and could not be adjusted back. The wheel constantly deflated. Horrible and cheap thing.

Have had a few bikes. Ride mostly in an urban environment. This is one of the best bikes I have ever owned. Quiet, rock solid and sexy. Can ride it forward hours. Decided to go completely fixed when I got it, and after some break in time, there is no going back.

Simple, light and no-frills set-up. Lastly, REI customer service is a pleasure. They did not hand over the bike until I was completely satisfied. Kudos. Thanks REI.

Great bike. Silky smooth ride and tons of style points. It’s not a race bike (obviously) and not a touring bike (maybe not so obvious), but if your interested in looking good while cruising around town, then this is a good choice.

I get lots of looks when riding it. And like the other reviewer said, the chain is super quiet. Pure’s customer service? Well, it stinks. I submitted a repair question to them — twice — and was ignored both times.

Bad on them. REI, on the other hand, is fantastic. Get the bike, just don’t expect any help from Pure if there is a problem.

My girlfriend bought me the whaler for Christmas. I was very excited about the the bike. Once I got it home and started looking at it I realized that there was something wrong with the front wheel. the front fork was uneven and caused the front wheel to sit crooked.

I then took the bike back to the store to try to exchange it and possibly fix it and all the bikes had the same issue. I returned the bike and then called sole bikes. the guy I spoke to there said they are aware of this and that’s just how the bikes come.

He said that’s why the bike only costs what it does and not 3000. Moral to the story , don’t buy a bike from these people. No bike that cost 400 plus dollars should have this kind of issue. I hope this helps anyone looking to purchase a bike from Sole.

Absolutely gorgeous bicycle, I have received numerous compliments on the appearance of the bike. The quality of the parts and the bike itself are decent, what you would expect out of a fixie. This Bike is perfect for riding around campus, to the gym, ect.

I would not recommend this bike if you are looking to ride long distances.

For the money, its the best bike I have ever owned! The color combo and the quality of ride is fantastic and I am in love with it. You can’t go wrong with this bike! Everything was shipped quickly and safely and the bike was a piece of cake to put together.

This bike is amazing!!! They truly thought of every little detail with this one. We thought our 6 year old twins were bike fanatics before, but ever since their new Jetts arrived earlier this week, they haven’t talked about anything else! From morning until night, all they want to do is be outside riding their new Jetts! You’re right, Specialized – we do have to beg them to get off these bikes!! :).

Light, comfortable, very good brakes. The daughter is very pleased. I recommend everyone. The bike does not have many accessories, but it is sensational to ride.

Just picked 2 of these up for my 10 and 8 years olds. They LOVE being able to change the gears (8 speed), it’s also very easy to change gears because it is a trigger control. The bikes are unbelievably light weight as well.

Doesn’t hurt that they look great either! Looks like a premium bike.
