20 Best Shoes For Long Distance Hiking (2023 Updated)

This purchase makes pair number 4 and 5 of this exact shoe. Absolutely love them. These are comfortable and sturdy as well as ventilated. I am very active at work, we have concrete floors that we spend lots of time on but also make it outside to our retail facilities every day.

It’s usually hot there and lots of opportunity to get wet feet. Shoes dry out quickly if I accidently water my shoes instead of the flowers. They wear out exactly the same places every time in the flex point above my toes but only after I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of them! Will buy again and again as long as the style stays available.

This is my second pair of the exact Salomon Pathfinder hiking shoes. The first pair is almost 10 years old and the tread was worn out so I got a new pair last year. I loved my second pair and used to wear them everywhere.

hiking, walking, biking, anytime. However, less than 9 months of wearing them, the webbing on top part of the shoe started to tear on both shoes. It has torn so much now that I can see my feet inside of the shoes from the outside.

I’m hesitant to get another pair so I might look at other brands.

I have prearthritis in my toes so comfort, especially for sports/activities, is very important for me. I purchased these in a size 8 and they are a bit big. I put my Ortho inserts in these and they weren’t quite long enough to fill the shoes.

Nevertheless, they are very comfy in the footbed. On my right foot, the shoe rubs near the base of my big toe which concerned me. I was concerned it was going to bother me and I’d have to wear them a bunch before they were broken in.

I took a chance and wore them to hike about 6 miles through some very rough and rocky terrain and I was pleasantly surprised. No blisters, no bruising and the traction is fantastic. I didn’t slip once and felt very stable hiking in these shoes.

I’m very pleased with the shoes, just wish the top of the right shoe didn’t rub my foot but maybe it’ll stretch out over time.

Nice pleasing shoe for looks. I have the Altra Lone Peak AWR hiking boots and my orthtoics replace the sole that comes with the shoe. However I wanted a pair to walk around town in so I purchase these.

From the time I put my orthotics (full length) inside, my arches felt pushe up. Then my feet began tingling. I took them home anyways and tried them the next morning. Same issue So I put a small heel lift under each orthotic and that made the tingling go away, My thoughts, as confirmed by REI sales, is that folks were compaining about the lack of arch support in the shoes so they raised the mid part of the shoe keeping the zero drop.

If folks need more arch support, get orthotics or why didnt Altra just make the insolde have more arch support instead of the shoe,’ I returned these and am trying the Escalante is hope they may be better — Too bad cause they are funky town shoes.

JUST BEWARE if you use your own custom made orthotics in these. I wear a Mens 9. 5 or Womens 10. 5 or 11.

This shoe is a revelation. I have a wide foot that has some sensitive areas. There is a dense foam layer just beneath the insole that is like clouds. Then there are upper materials that are soft sued and soft canvas.

Your foot is held like a gentle glove. Still, the materials are strong and well put together. The sole grips well and is tough and long lasting. I have like a 4E foot and the Altra accommodates it. Most every other hiking shoe I have purchased is narrower and irritates the sides of my wide foot.

Not the Altra. There is an interesting feel with the lower heel bed, to approximate natural foot placement. I like it. I would recommend this shoe for groomed trails and asphalt, but it would stand up to tough terrain if needed, once in a while.

The relatively soft uppers would not do well on the granite scree and rubble I climb on when I go off trail in Joshua Tree. But this shoe is miraculous in every other way.

What I really wanted was an ankle height Lone Peak Hiker equivalent, but since the regular Lone Peaks had some negative reviews regarding durability, I decided to give the LP Alpine a shot. My intent was to use this shoe for shorter hikes and out on the town.

The upper material is all leather with canvas over the toes, which is dressy, but makes the shoe feel heavier and less comfortable than a Lone Peak. It also makes me wonder about breathability and quick dry properties.

Having seen the shoe now, I would not pick this shoe for hiking. My regular shoe size is 10, and that’s the size I chose for the LP Alpine. While there is sufficient room between my big toe and the BOTTOM front of the shoe, my big toe nail is hitting the slanted leather top of the shoe, making the shoes feel slightly too small, even with the laces firmly tied to push the heel against the back of the shoe.

These are very comfortable and supportive walking shoes. I had two pairs of these which lasted me five years of walking and cycling on and off-road. My first impressions when I saw these was the excitement of owning new shoes.

Also the suede leather is very, very nice and soft. They fitted perfectly and were very comfortable. After looking a bit closer, I noticed some of the quality of the material cuttings and seams is not is as neat as my older pairs, but I’m sure these will last me for a while to come.

I splashed out and bought these to replace my old two pairs, which had holes in them. I have been using these for walking, driving and cycling, but my main reason for my purchase was to use them for riding my unicycle.

They are very grippy and supportive for this, with a sole that is hard but not that thick, which gives me much better control and confidence. This is probably far from their intended use, but they work great for this purpose.

I hope these last me as long as my previous pairs. Thank you Karrimor for these wonderful shoes and Sports Direct for the very reasonable price and prompt delivery.

I’ve previously purchased cheaper and more expensive walking shoes. These walking shoes are at the cheaper end of the budget. I’ve been wearing them every day for nearly 2 weeks for walking to work and walking my dog.

I’m pleasantly surprised by their comfort considering their low price. My first walk with them was 5 miles and I never thought about them for the whole walk which is a good thing. I would say they’re a narrower fit across the toes than other shoes I’ve had, but for me the fit is good.

The ventilation is good.

Be careful if you rely on EU sizes. For example UK size 11. 5 is quoted as EU size 46. 5. Although the box has a large 46. 5 under the large 11. 5 it does not say EU next to it. If you check the smaller sizing table or the sizing table on the trainer tongue UK size 11.

5 is actually EU size 45. 5. Just damaged a toe nail and can’t return because I’ve used them. When you get the correct size these trainers are great, comfortable, hard wearing and good value.

I bought these in summer if 2020 and writing this review in January of 2021 – I bought these to be a lightweight hunting boot for birds and deer and ended up eating these the majority of my hunts, putting on probably around 100 miles on these on multiple hunting trips, plus MANY MORE MILES using these for fall and winter weather in the west and Midwest, including hiking and snow.

I believe I bought these on sale for $50 with free shipping and cannot recommend these enough. At this rate, I think they’ll probably last a few more seasons doing the things I’m doing now. They seem to be fairly waterproof unless you’re stepping into something deep, they breathe fairly well for a lightweight boot and they’re super light and comfortable.

I went up and down hills and mountains on grass, mud and snow. Rocks aren’t a problem although the sole is light and flexible and for serious and long rocky climbs perhaps they aren’t the perfect boot, but I had no problem navigating dried up river bottoms with lots of rocks.

Mud is a little iffy since they’re not a hardcore boot, but my winter boots slid around in the muck as well, so unless you’re wearing a seriously lug-ed boot you’ll probably slide around. Even though they’ve been used quite a bit and have been muddy, wet and dirty, they’re still nice enough to wear out for dog walks and below some jeans on regular days.

I hesitated when I read other reviews but I seriously love these and for the price they’re a serious bargain.

I do a lot of walking and have always worn walking boots, however following a serious Achilles tendon injury earlier this year I was advised to switch to walking shoes. After taking advice I bought a pair of Redmond V2.

I started wearing them in June and they are still going strong six months and many miles of walking later. I have to admit being dubious about the shoes being water proof and in the first few weeks was quite protective of them.

I needn’t have worried not only have they provided just the right amount of support for my tendon but they have also kept my feet dry through the summer, autumn and now the winter when the paths and moorland where I walk are saturated and muddy.

My only criticism of the shoe would be that the tread has worn away and the undersole of the shoe is now pretty smooth in places. That being said, I love the shoe and have already ordered another pair ready to replace these when they finally give out.

I bought this boot 12 weeks ago. After 8 weeks of use, I posted a review stating I love the fit of the boot but the boot itself had developed a very noisy, creaky sound at every step (like old floor boards in a barn).

Despite the noisy, creaky sound of the boot, I did post that I would recommend purchasing the boot as the fit itself was fantastic. I would like to amend my original review as I no longer recommend purchasing this boot.

The creaking noise has got increasingly loud over the past 4 weeks of use. Online chat suggested I speak with someone dealing with warranties. However, reviewing the warranty requirements, the original receipt is needed place a claim.

Of course that is long gone. I feel I have no recourse at this point and will suck it up and wear noisy boots until they wear out. Despite them being on a good sale currently, I would not waste my money in purchasing another pair.

I still give these 5 stars, because I think my only complaint will be corrected once I break them in. My only problem is that the fabric upper is a bit stiff over my big toe and the natural crease point there pinches the top of my toe a bit.

Generally, though, I have never worn a running shoe that has felt so custom-made for me. I overpronate/supinate. I have normal arches, but very wide feet. I was skeptical, but according to measurements, Hoka recommended EE instead of EEEE or whatever the widest option is.

To my surprise, the penultimate width option is true to measurement and fits like a glove. The big winners for me with this shoe are that the wide versions are legit, but more notably, the insole/footbed supports my gait like no shoe I’ve ever experienced.

I usually just get a neutral sole and try to correct my gait with my ankle position. With these, I don’t have to think about how my feet are landing. They just strike how they’re supposed to automatically.

I never realized how much extra effort I was putting into running all my life. It’s been kinda crazy, actually. I’ve worn Brooks, Mizuno, Saucony, New Balance, and more, and nothing comes close to these Hokas.

Plus, these Hokas LOOK AMAZING.

Light, very comfortable, good traction, but not designed for off-trail wear. The soft soles of the shoes are not designed for any off-trail travel. Tread pads come loose and even sticks are able to penetrate the soft sole areas not covered by tread.

I’m really surprised, this is the worst performance I’ve ever had from any boot or trail-runner. Yesterday, I pulled the Speedgoats out of the box, put them on and took off to hike three mountains, none of which have trails.

Total stats: 8. 6 miles, 2200 feet of elevation gain on slopes with mixed dirt/loose rock and some solid light scrambling sections. Had two tread pads tear and two punctures holes to the sole. Considering much of the hikes were on loose dirt I was actually stunned at how bad the damage was.

Had I hiked on limestone which I’ve done with Altra Olympus 4. 0’s these Hoka’s would have literally fallen apart. I’m totally stunned and disappointed, was hoping for a pair of durable trail-runners.

I’ve run everyday for 6 and half years, swapping between two sets of shoes, averaging 3. 5 miles per run. I track every run on Strava, so I’ve got very accurate mileage on every pair of shoes. About 30% of my runs are on dirt and trails, the rest on pavement.

The Hoya One One Speedgoat is a very comfortable and very durable shoe. I know when a shoe is worn out — you just know — and most are good for somewhere between 300 and 400 miles (many of them have been various Topo Athletic models).

The Speedgoat 4 were just retired with 761. 1 miles on them, and I’ve replaced them with a new pair (alternating with a pair of Topo trail shoes). They’re plenty smooth on pavement, pretty good traction on snow and ice, and hook up well on trails.

Most shoes I retire when I start having noticeable foot pains after a run, but I retired the Speedgoat 4’s because I finally wore away enough of the sole on one foot to feel like they weren’t landing as smoothly, but they still didn’t cause any bio mechanical issues.

In my book, they’re the beest deal in running shoes in terms of function and longevity.

Truth in advertising, this review is more about my previous Trailhead shoes than the ones I recently bought. I bought my first pair of Trailhead in a different color about three years ago, but because I worked full time in an office I was only able to wear them infrequently on weekends.

That all changed in March 2020 when everything shut down & I started working from home. Every morning I would get a three-five mile walk on a mix of roads and moderate trails in before work. I primarily wore my Lems on the walks & have continued to do so to this day.

They’ve proven to be very comfortable with the right amount of support for moderate paths & inclines, as well as lots of stair steps. Most impressively, they are showing only minimal wear and tear after literally hundreds of miles of use.

I’m still using them for my daily walks while at home. I bought the second pair as a good multipurpose shoe now that I’m starting to travel again. The only thing I would caution is the shoe fits OK in terms of size, but it is close.

I wear a 8. 5D & the Trailhead is true to size. It is not cramped, but my toes are “aware” of the front of the shoe. It is not a problem for moderate trails, but for someone planning on steeper trails I’d recommend going for a half size larger to account for downhill walking.

This is one of the best wearing and performing shoes I’ve had. Love everything about it. Except that is falls apart WAY to fast and in the worst ways. Probably the least durable shoe I’ve ever owned, period.

Which for $130 is unacceptable. Like, I could buy a $25 shoe from a discount store that would hold up longer than this thing. Sole completely separated from both shoes after moderate street and hiking use, plastic piece that gives form to heel cracked right away, stiching coming out.

Wish I could justify buying another pair, but no way. Hopefully company improves durability.

I always get comments about these shoes when I wear them out, because they look huge on me. I’ve been using them as lifestyle shoes more so than hiking shoes (being white shoes and all), and they only go well with like 15% of my outfits.

That said, I really feel like I’m walking on clouds. I was told by my foot doctor that with my feet I’d need a wide toe-box and a structured heel, and I think I deliberately overdid it. But no regrets.

My feet feel well taken care of and the style is unique enough to make me feel better than plain ol’ running shoes.

I’m not sure why, but I had to size up. Then when sizing up, the rest of the boot feels a little loose. I wear a 9. 5 in the lower slung, regular sneakers. With this shoe my toes hit the top of the boot.

It felt just a smidgen too close for comfort. Had to exchange for the 10. I wonder if the shoe last that the company uses is really a unisex last.

They are my first HokaOne, and I loved them, apart from being a different model, which we are accustomed to, they are very comfortable, I use them daily, I would love to buy more pairs of these shoes, in white and red colors, camouflaged, they are I recommend them, and do not go unnoticed, I can not tell you the durability yet, they are very new, now I am a fan of hokaone.

I will wait for the new colors or models.

Bought these for my husband and he is very happy with the looks and overall feel of the shoe. The fit is good, his foot is a bit narrow. He has not worn them for any extended walks or hikes yet, but plans to, and is hopeful they will be as comfortable as they are now.

Could have more lace holes for a tighter fit for longer walks., otherwise comfortable.

I’ve had a pair of Terrex AX4 for about 4 years and they were a awesome. Tried out these free hikers because of all the reviews about how comfortable they are due to the Boost foam. Well these were a fail for me.

They gave me blisters and after hiking up to Nevada Fall and Upper Falls in Yosemite the rubber on the heel of one shoe started coming unglued and the plastic ridge in the outsole where the heel is was beat up pretty well.

Ended up returning them after my return from Yosemite. No way these shoes could last more than 6 months in rugged terrain. For the price they’re not worth it. Picked up some Terrex Swift R3 instead for an upcoming trip to Big Pine, CA.

This boot is the best ! I want to let HOKA know that many people depend on this particular boot. I have hallux rigidus in both big toes and this boot is a life saver. It has a roomy toe box and a stiff sole.

It also accepts my custom orthotics and has the best cushioning of any shoe. I have learned HOKA is not making them in all black anymore and some of us need an all black shoe for our jobs. This is really disheartening because this boot helps so many people that are on there feet all day.

The company could do so well with this shoe if they would just listen their customers. I don’t mind paying more for a shoe this good. The low top is not as good ,it does not have the same cushioning.

I did buy the Kaha GTX but they do not have nearly as much cushioning as the Tor Ultra Hi so I probably will return them and try to find a comparable shoe. I really hope HOKA reads this review and actually hears my words.

I wear these for all occasions. I really have no choice as I have “Hallux Rigidus” (stiff big toes from abuse). Stiff toe is what happens when you squish a size 13 foot into size 12 shoes for most of you life because size 12 was the largest size available.

So I need an extra large amount of space to accommodate my enlarged (bone spurs) around the big toe base. My original tan pair is now 3 years old and I can still wear them. However, I have since backed them up with the same Hoka Tor High top in every color available.

Why are these the best shoe ever designed? For one they were like stepping into pillows. Oddly, my recent taupe pair felt harder, but still the best! I need that stiffer sole to prevent my big toes from flexing as they cannot.

Second, these have the laces extend into the toe box. My only complaint about the other Hoka’s is they do not have Altra’s toe box nor this extended lacing. The extended lacing permits me a custom fit in the toe box to something larger and thereby taking the pressure off of my enlarged big toes.

I was just to REI trying normal height shoes on. My two choices were the Altra Paridigm 4. 5 and the Hoka Bondi. Altras have too flexible of a sole for me, but the Paridigm is their highest stack and least flexible.

The Bondi sole was great!, but the big toe box did not have the extended lacing and was pinned by some leather like lasting. The perfect shoe would be the Paridigm upper on the Bondi sole – hint hint to Hoka!!! Needless to say, putting back on my brand new Hoka Tor High Tops Taupe again felt much better, so maybe not that much harder a sole then the originals.

I guess I will continue to wear nothing but these hiking boots everyday forever. Please keep manufacturing them!!!!.

Too bad as I want to give these a five star, but I just can’t because they are “not waterproof!” I have had four pairs of these boots, and I have hiked three Camino de Santiago’s with them, 530 miles, 630 miles, and 445 miles, and have loved them, but they did not stay dry in the rain.

Other than the waterproof issue they were super comfortable and could be worn right out of the box. They support you ankles, and because the high tops, keep most of the debris out. I also use them to walk 10-14 miles a day, three to five days a week to stay in shape and to condition for my upcoming treks.

Even though they are not waterproof I bought two more pair for my upcoming trek the length of New Zealand, from the bottom of the South Island to the top of the North Island, approximately 1,200 to 1,400 miles.

I have been getting about 500 to a maximum of 600 miles out of these boots. People have asked me why is still use them when they are not waterproof, but for me, they have been the most comfortable boots that I have every used.

I had used many different brands on over the years, and especially on my 1,400 mile trek from my home in Southern California to Canada, and at the end I preferred these. These boots are not the most ridget for carrying heavy weight, tough climbing or support, but again, for me the most comfortable.

What I have been doing to help with the waterproof issue has been to spray them with a waterproofing silicon that repeals the water and rain, and therefore keeping the boots much drier. If you want a good comfortable boot, and are not to concerned about a 100% waterproof boot, you’ll love these.
