20 Best S Video To Hdmi Converter (2023 Updated)

I use this converter to connect my old style DVD player to my new Smart TV. This unit gives me the ability to connect both using the 3 RCA plugs (Red, Yellow and White). The picture is clear and the converter gives you the ability to choose between 720 and 1080 and it has the output using an HDMI cable which then connects directly into your new Smart TV.

I would recommend this very affordable converter for anyone that needs to connect old tech to new tech.

This product is excellent for analog to digital connections. The picture quality is nice and the audio is awesome. It only took seconds to hook it up and make it operational. The pricing is excellent.

What would make this product better would be to include a 1 to 2 foot HDMI cord.

Inserted between a TV converter box and a monitor that had only HDMI input. First tested with a longer USB cord. Worked fine. After installing in final location where short, included USB cord was suitable, it no longer worked.

Very unusual, but the included USB cord was defective.

First use for this was a 150′ SDI run from a video camera to a video projector. My camera had an SDI output, but the projector only had HDMI. Worked amazingly well. The bonus was that the converter allowed me to strip the audio signal and send it to a mixer using the 1/4 left and right jacks.

This worked out well as it minimized the amount of cables I had to tape down. i would give it 5 stars for this alone! Looking forward to my next project.

I purchased the converter for two reasons. First was to convert HD SDI to HDMI which it does without issue. The second reason was for the HDMI Instant Lock feature. Unfortunately this feature falls short.

With the monitor that I am using it works 50% if the time. Literately every other change of input source. All three sources are configured the same as per the instructions. Also, the HDMI output drops out.

Something that it is not supposed to do. I have been in contact with Blackmagic support regarding the issue. After several weeks of back and fourth via e-mail the issue was referred to Engineering. After an additional week I inquired as to the status of the issue and received this in response; “Unfortunately, the support team does not receive any development updates.

All we can do is report it to Engineering and they then decide what issues to use their resources on. I advised you to consider returning the equipment, since I can’t make any guarantees that this will be fixed or an issue that they wish to tackle.

” Not the response I was expecting or hoping for. We did discover that the quality of the HDMI monitor matters. This issue presents itself with lower quality consumer monitors. If that monitor is replaced with a broadcast quality monitor, the feature works about 98% of the time.

In general I would recommend Blackmagic Design products. Just not this one if “HDMI Instant Lock” is important to you.

This is a solid converter from Blackmagic. It is an improvement over the previous version. Plug and play! Highly recommended!

Ordered two and one worked OK for 4 hours then started blinking in and out. The other one worked fine reconverting back direct from a similar unit, but also blinked in and out paired with a Decimator MD-HX.

These seem to work with same brand units and not with Kramer, Decimator, or Black Magic. Paired with these other brands they had sync or no signal issues. Paired with same type worked just fine. Good thing I also got two of the other direction converters.

For the price, I would recommend, but with caution to get in sets to pair between SDI runs.

Buy this, don’t buy junk. I bought two non-branded units before this and regret it. Just save the $$ up and buy this when you have the $$ in hand. Don’t buy cheap stuff thinking “it is half the price, I am saving money”.

That is just not how it goes down. In the long run you spend twice as much trying to “save a buck” and then have twice as much trash on hand too. As for the unit, it works flawlessly right away without signal drops.

The video quality is far superior to the aforementioned budget options. Do yourself a favor and get this item to solve your HDMI to SDI worries.

I bought this to connect an HDMI monitor to an older computer with a VGA card. After connecting the adapter, the monitor displayed no signal. I tried as many options as I could on the monitor, and I tried every USB connection on the computer.

I tried without the USB connection. I even tried connecting the USB to a different computer (because it sounded like it just takes power). I was not able to get the adapter to show any sign of working.

Also, the monitor itself is in good working condition, however without a monitor, I have no way to determine the operational state of the computer.

I use this adapter to connect an older laptop to a 1080p TV, using the computer mainly as a media player. The adapter has a great 1080p picture quality. It’s also very convenient that it acts as a USB sound card and automatically sends sound through HDMI.

The big problem (with sound) is however that Windows 10 sound volume control does not work with the chip used in the adapter (one of C-media chips). This might be a deal breaker if you use your computer as a media player, since this means you can’t simply change volume or mute the sounds from your wireless keyboard — you have to do that using your TV remote.

Finally, not the fault of the adapter, but note that because VGA output is analogue and therefore not HDCP compatible you can’t play some copyrighted content in HD or at all (Home Essentials Direct Prime allows playing only in “Standard Resolution” and Netflix, I believe, doesn’t let you play anything at all).

Works well with headless Linux machines that only have a VGA output on the motherboard. This device is for systems that are connecting to a monitor with HDMI inputs (i. e. analog -> digital). Incidentally, the USB “power” plug appears as a C-Media USB sound card, and audio from the computer works immediately.

A huge improvement over lugging a VGA-capable monitor around for these configurations.

This is an excellent product at a superb price. It has the ability to take an uploaded LUT to convert HDR pictures to SDR, so you can see converted pictures if desired, and if not there’s an easy on/off setting if you connect it to a PC and use the BMD app to configure it.

3D LUTs uploaded also via the app, as. cube files. Easy firmware updates too, and works on PC & Mac.

This converter works just as well as the previous version (no 3G in the name), but it updates to USB-C for power and adds camera control conversion between HDMI (Pocket) and SDI (URSA, Studio) cameras.

This means you can control a Pocket 6K from an ATEM Television Studio/Production Studio, or control an URSA Broadcast from an ATEM Mini. My goal is to control multiple Micro Studio 4K cameras from an ATEM Mini Pro ISO.

Note that as of the time I wrote this, the studio cameras are not yet working correctly. A few controls work, but most don’t. This has been acknowledged on Blackmagic’s forum, with a promise to fix it in a future firmware update.

Once that is sorted, this will be a 5-star review.

I have 4 of these. They are working well. You may want to test these for a few days before an install. Warning: I hooked one of these to my Roland V-1HD video mixer. No signal. Hooked an HDMI distro amp between them, and then it started working.

These use colorspace YUV. The Roland was looking for colorspace RGB. The distro amp was a to fix the issue!.

This is a great device for combining older technology with new. My mother has an older Bose 123 system that does not have an HDMI or component cable output. Meanwhile, her newest television doesn’t have an S-video input, and I don’t think it has a video in either, or I hooked something else up to it.

At any rate, I found this devise as a solution and it has worked great for her for over a year now.

I initially purchased this converter to allow me to play an original xbox on my 4k OLED tv in the living room. Unfortunately, whether it be poor upscaling on the part of the tv, or signal degradation from this particular converter, the console and subsequent game library is almost unplayable due to the awful picture quality.

I know the OG xbox has now aged 20+ years, but connecting directly to an old television in the basement with standard RCA jacks was a significantly better experience. You’d be better off finding another converter, or if you can track one down, the official HD converter released back in the day that also allows for toslink 5.

1 surround sound output.

This was purchased as an Open Box item for my old Panasonic VCR. It was easy to set up with my own cables. It is connected to an hdmi switch with other items as my soundbar only has 3 inputs. I played a couple of VHS tapes both purchased and one I had recorded.

The picture was as I would expect given the age of the tapes. There’s some graininess given the media vs the quality of the Oled TV. As far as the sound,it was pretty good and had no lag. Overall, I’m pleased that I can still watch my tapes, especially the recorded ones of our family.

My GE range has a large number of options on burner sizes. The oven bakes well. There are two features that I wish were different. The timer only beeps quietly a few times then shuts off. My former GE range had a loud beep that could be heard from other rooms and continued beeping until it was turned off.

The burners do not simmer even on the lowest temperature. It would be nice to receive a printed manual in your preferred language when your range is delivered.

This will be my 3rd Kanexpro converter I have owned, they are good products but are flawed in their own right. I own a older model Kanexpro that converts svideo and composite to 720p. It retails for about 67 dollars brand new, you find them for 38 bucks openboxed or used.

The model I am reviewing is latest version from Kanexpro that converts svideo and composite to 4K. It looks fine on my 4k tv, but you will notice a lot of noise and decoloration on black screens with both the N64, and GameCube.

I can promise you it was not due to me using a cheap svideo cables with the systems. On the contrary, I used Monster gold plated svideo cables for the GameCube and N64. I noticed on the converter that the svideo and composite ports are cheap.

They lack gold plating that my older Kanexpro converter had, and svideo port is lacking proper shielding. Kanexpro put a lot effort into giving the converter HDMI 2. 0 support with 4K at 60hz. Don’t get me wrong, the converter very impressive there are not any converters at its price that can do that.

In the end, they ended up cutting corners by giving the converter cheap analog input ports, that fill the signal with noise, even with the best cables plugged in. The picture ends up looking not as chisp as it should, this is quite disappointing.

You are better off buying the older model that upscales to 720p. It will not look necessarily the best on a 4k display, but you have almost RGB like color quality and good black levels. The older model has better gold plated and shielded inputs and is cheaper than the current model too.

If you find the current model at a good discount, and you want something to fully utilize your 4k display, it is not a bad converter to pick up.

The Kanex Pro CON-AV-HD4K RCA/S-Video 4K HDMI Converter comes with an AC adapter but no HDMI cable, it is built out of durable metal construction, it is simple to use. And it gets the job done for converting composite or S-Video cables into HDMI.

But the image quality is only good when you use S-Video cables as input. Using the Kanex Pro Converter with composite doesn’t improve the image at all. However, Using the S-Video makes the image quite beautiful.

See the pictures for the stark difference between composite and S-Video. You won’t need me to tell you which is which. The colors do look washed out when using this converter. Turning the color setting up to between 75 and 100 on the TV helped immensely.

Also the Image is stretched. There’s a zoom button with six settings which do almost nothing, only slightly increase the image size. The least zoomed in setting looks the best. The de-interlacing is adaptive and imperfect.

But that’s always going to be the case, unless bob de-interlacing is ever used. I hope that will come with a firmware update. It had no problem with the 240p to 480i transitions. Lag is almost non-existent and had no effect on game play.

There’s a bright white LED on the front of the unit that only turns off when you unplug the power. Pitch black electrical tape should solve that problem. Good quality overall when using S-Video. Could use an aspect ratio switch instead of the source switch, since you’ll never have two systems hooked up simultaneously seeing as how the S-Video and composite share the audio ports.

And also the LED on front is unnecessary. But if you use S-Video cables it can be a good alternative to more pricey adapters.

Even though this box does not utilize 4k resolution it does make older devices work with Brand New 4k devices. I am very impressed how this box works right straight from the factory. I know there are others complaining about the quality, but quite frankly It’s very good for getting older devices working on a newer 4k monitor.

Best of all is using this box with S-Video output from an older DVD player! IF your not super picky about Ultra High definition then you may like it? For me this is a perfect fit and for the money I am very pleased with the results!.

Anyone trying to figure out how to record to an Atomos from a camera that only has component output probably has gone through three or four converters trying to find something that accurately conforms to HDMI standards and can be captured by a Blade/Ninja/Samurai and ended up terribly frustrated.

Get this device and stop worrying. Takes 23. 976p and 59. 94i out of cameras like a Canon XH-A1 reliably and without hiccups, making it about the only way to leverage legacy HD cameras alongside SDI and HDMI systems, which is a fairly common issue in worship systems and low-budget studios.

This device is a great way to hook up an older DVD/VHS player that has RCA connectors (e. g. red/yellow/white pins) to a new TV that does not have these connections. We purchased a new Sony TV and could not connect the older DVD player to it.

I called Sony, explained the set-up and they said they were not able to help. I called Best Buy and explained the set-up and the Customer Service person gave me the answer in 2 seconds! Be sure to purchase the HDMI-to-HDMI cable so you can connect this Insignia device to the TV.

The unit does not come with the HDMI-to-HDMI cable. We only needed a 1. 5 ft HDMI cable because the Insignia device comes with a cord that plugs into an outlet and the DVD player already had a long enough cable to plug into the Insignia device.

You just have to get from the device to the TV. Super easy to set-up.

You would think that somewhere in the designing of a product like this it would take into account the vadt majority of devices (if not all) this will be used with output 4:3 aspect ratio. Nope. It stretches everything to 16:9 which is annoying in itself but even more annoying when you’re using it with older game consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis).

This single problem alone makes the device completely unusable for older game systems despite the claims to the contrary on the packaging. To make matters worse, it DOWNGRADES the picture! I get a much clearer, sharper image – in the correct aspect ratio – by simply plugging the systems directly into the A/V inputs of the tv itself! I should have known better than to trust a tech product manufactured and/or marketed by Wal Mart.

My kids asked what I wanted this apparatus called video HDMI Converter. I said just wait till Sunday dinner, and you will be surprised. These days with Smart Tv’s and internet connected devises we have left great memories behind.

I took out the dusty box that had the VCR in it and my grandson asked is that some kind of game console? I said no it is something I used to watch movies on. Sunday came I wasn’t sure the Onn Video HDMI Converter would work, I was crossing my fingers as my kids made jokes.

The Onn HDMI Video Converter was so easy to instal and connect to a Smart TV and the very best of it was the actual clear image on the TV with minimal old VCR tape image output. This converter is a new addition to my family that my daughter wanted to borrow it and took some tapes home with her.

Funny how this was an old school item per my kids yet they also took a shine to this little gadget that brought tears to my eyes. Not to mention my son wanted to connect to his work system to show off and his presentation was crystal clear.

A blast from the past. Onn watch composite AV to HDMI will have you have a blast from the past. As newer TVs get more complex and dont have older features. This converter easily set up older gaming system.

The N64 on a modern TV and retro games that we loved as kids in our very own living room in 2021. Took me back to as a kid and its good for a game night or just having a fun playing old school games.

Looks a bit tacky with all the wiring but if its cleaned up a bit; you’ll be fine. You will forget it as soon as you see it pop up on the TV. Would recommend anyone trying to have something added to their collection or simply have this to have your own handheld time machine TV converter!.

I needed to connect an external monitor (Dell) with a Lenovo laptop. Unfortunately, the laptop only had a female HDMI port for video output and the monitor came with a (male) DisplayPort. Hence the need for this converter.

It’s quite pricey, but it works flawlessly. By the way, I thought about getting an HDMI splitter to use two different external monitors, but I did my research and found out that that does not work. If your Laptop only allows for video output via one HDMI port, you can project the signal to two different monitors, but they will both show the same screen.

I have a different Laptop (Dell) and allows video output via USB as well. In that case, you can get a splitter and connect different external monitors which you can connect to different screens. So maybe check the video output features the next time you buy a laptop.

This is just what I needed. Unfortunately, I did not do my research properly and I ended up with a passive adapter to plug my laptop to a DP monitor. This is just what I needed to actively convert HDMI from my laptop to the DP signal my monitor needs.

Save yourself some trouble and time and make sure that if your laptop only has an HDMI outlet, this is the kind of adapter that you need!.

So this HDMI to DisplayPort adapter did a good job in converting the hdmi output of my laptop to both my displayport monitors. However when connecting my Nintendo Switch I could only get output on one of the monitors through its displayport input.

The other monitor (Asus XB270HU) refused to show anything. It’s kind of a bummer because that’s the whole reason I bought this, but I’m still giving it four stars because I believe it will work well for most people.

Following the demise of my desktop pc I needed something to enable me to use my laptop as a substitute, and this worked for me. Pity that the industry does not have a standard for computer related connections.

My $1000 HP moniter had a Display Port Connector but my $900 HP laptop has HDMI, hence the need for this item. At least it gave the the option of using what I had left rather than spending another $800 on a replacement desktop pc, so to me it was a great value!.

This product works as intended, however the connections are not that high quality. During initial set up, the picture on the screen would often flicker or go black until I found a way to lay the cords so it would play without disturbing the connection.

As of right now, the 1080p picture coming from my graphics card, to this splitter, to an hdmi cable and then to my television screen looks crystal clear, so this product can work perfectly fine, so long as I don’t touch it.

There really weren’t many of these to choose from when I purchased it so this still may be your best choice on Home Essentials Direct and I guess its hard to complain about such a cheap piece of hardware, but I have to mark it down on its quality.

I don’t own a 4K TV; nor do I own any PAL devices that need conversion to NTSC. I bought this solely to upscale an S-Video connection (from my N64 console) to 1080p HD, and I chose this model because I believed the “Zoom” button on the front would allow me to toggle the picture between 4:3 and 16:9 modes.

Unfortunately, the “Zoom” button on this model doesn’t have this effect–pressing it only alters the horizontal size of the picture by a very small amount (maybe up to 5% or so). There’s no way to toggle to a proper 4:3 ratio–this converter only outputs in 16:9.

This is a shame, since most composite/S-video devices are by definition supposed to be used in a 4:3 image format. If your TV allows you to resize an HD image into 4:3, then you don’t need to worry about this, but if your TV is a few years old and doesn’t have that option, then you’re out of luck.

There is a USB port that presumably allows the firmware of the converter to be upgraded, but I couldn’t find any such firmware (I tried Googling this product, and all I got was its product page on Amazon–not even Orei’s site seems to list it).

On the plus side, the picture is excellent. It does a good job of smoothing similar colors and sharpening contrasting colors, without overprocessing the image into a blur or blowing out the contrast.

Nor does it apply any sort of aggressive MPEG noise reduction (which can result in ghosting/motion blur) or any sort of dynamic brightness/contrast adjustments. I also didn’t have any issues with latency (when gaming).

The picture quality really is great, especially when using an S-Video source. Anyways, if you aren’t a stickler for aspect ratio, and don’t mind your picture getting forced into 16:9, then this converter offers nearly unmatched picture quality.

If, like me, you value the original aspect ratio of the source image, then you’ll need to look elsewhere, or hope that your TV settings will allow you to force the image into 4:3. For the price, I had hoped for a proper aspect ratio toggle option.

If your TV allows you to force an HD image into 4:3, then you’ve got nothing to worry about, and I highly recommend this.

This converter allows me to connect my Super VHS recorder to my 4K-UHD television. Super VHS looks a bit grainy, but otherwise pretty clear. VHS less clear; reminding you VHS tapes are primitive compared to DVDs and they are less clear than 4K.

This converter only upscales. It does not downscale from 4K-UHD HDMI to RCA and super cable input on your older equipment. There are different cables which do that. The converter takes a pretty-much square picture and make it almost fill my wide-screen television picture.

Overall satisfaction had me grinning from ear to ear.

It works, but you have to remember that “garbage in, garbage outâ€. Meaning the resolution of your masters is the key. The unit does a good job of “up converting†for bigger screens, but again the result reflects the quality of your masters.

What ever HDMI signal this puts out, none of my capture devices will work with this converter. The signal is showing, but the capture box just flashes it LED as if no signal. Others I have tried show the signal, but just crash when trying to capture it.

The image quality is TERRIBLE! It is also forced stretch to 16:9. Images is darker ad does not look as good as direct connect the RCA output to the tv/monitor directly. Up-scalling is a joke with this thing.

Also, be aware, there are over a dozen of these exact devices on Amazon, identical caseing and ports, exact same chips in side them, and they are a fraction of the cost of this QVS one. If u only need to have RCA work on an HDMI port on a TV, no native RCA inputs.

this will work, but don’t expect it to look good at all.

After using the product I can say with honesty that it was worth every penny. This QVS Composite to HDMI converter is extremely easy to set up and use. We were watching older home videos on our newer TV in no time at all.

I highly recommend this product.

Product was much cheaper in the store when I purchased it, not on sale or anything. Anyhow, it works very well and flawlessly, small footprint (I have a strip of loctite double sided tape holding it on the back of the old TV in question).

The only drawback is that the having to use a USB to power it, but there is usually one available on any device with HDMI. Definitely recommended.

Using this converter to plug my laptop (hdmi) into the aux input (RCA) of my vehicle. Initial connection was unsuccessful. After pressing the NTSC/PAL button a few times, and disconnecting/reconnecting, everything came up fine.

Next time it was needed it was basic plug and play. Have not had need to use the provided USB power source.

I really wanted to love this product. However, the video signal was very jumpy. It didn’t hold the video sync. I was using an HD video switcher going into this and then into a laptop to capture video.

Other reviews make it seem like it works well for consumer electronics but I had no luck. Returned for full refund.

Since I got my recent computer in 2013, I’ve been trying to get an output to my TV using the normal composite output, which the video card sadly doesn’t have. (Although S-Video is an option for my TV as well, it sometimes doesn’t detect it properly.

) After having tried 3 other VGA to composite scan converters, I thought I would try this Gefen scaler and use the HDMI output on my video card. And it seems I made the right choice at last! While the previous scan converters suffered with a somewhat stuttery PAL output, the Gefen scaler isn’t really all that bad at it.

It is a little bit stuttery here and there, but nothing to get in a fuss about. When I watched a TV show using it, it wasn’t noticeable at all. The image quality is pretty fine, and like it promised, it gives you a choice of resolutions.

You’d probably want to stick to about 1024 768 pixels to read stuff from your computer, or otherwise it gets too tiny for your television. I tried both the S-Video and composite outputs, and they were both very good.

I also tried it with my XBOX 360, and it worked fine with that too. The underscan setting is just right for my TV, if you want to get the whole image on your screen without anything cropped. It was nice to see that the power supply works from 100 to 240 V, and it also came with a set of Australian style pins, which I was happy to use! (It also had USA, British and possibly European ones too.

) The metal case seems rugged and the screw in style HDMI plug is a good idea to keep it from being pulled out. All in all, it seems very well made, and it looks pretty nice as well.

We are a Public Access station only able to broadcast in standard def. With live HD feeds coming in live other devices claimed but didn’t produce the letterbox format we needed. Only issue is once you get the device and you want letterbox, you have to go to the Gefen site and download the fix for this requirement.

Gefen should tell clients upfront.

I have a system that requires the S-Video connection – this product makes the integration of new computers to old video systems easy. Works much better than the Less expensive online auction site VGA adapters.

I purchased this to transfer some of my VHS to computer via HDMI. The quality was great, but the scaler cut about a 16th to 32nd off the bottom of my frame. If you don’t need that portion it is great.

The scaler didn’t stretch the frame in 480p SD mode, it was mostly 4:3. It looked great in 730p and 1080p. I’m sad it didn’t work for me. I returned the device looking for another one that doesn’t cut the frame.

I bought this out of frustration with my TV not having S-Video and generally looking awful with composite. The scaler in my TV was very fast already, but this matches it and has far superior picture quality.

I have used it with N64 and NES so far. In composite you can get away with turning sharpness up to 5 before you start seeing artifacts, S-Video I put it at 45 and it looks good. It would be nice if there was some sort of scanline emulation to make games look a bit like they did on CRTs, but extra processing just leads to higher latency which is the last thing anybody (sane) wants.

A good product but it will not work with the HDMI cables with a Roku or such for there is something embedded in the cable to keep the video signal from coming thru. Audio works well, but would not recommend this product for use with hookup to dvd recorder or such.

Not worth the money other products out there that are better!!1.

My kids have older televisions in their rooms, and always ask to watch DVD and Blu-ray movies. But, they don’t have the right connections to plug in our portable DVD players. They can’t even play their gaming devices because of their dinosaur tv’s.

Well, that was until we got them onn HDMI to composite connectors. Now, we can connect these compatible to their RCA supported displays. No more fussing to try and find the right adapters or converters, and the piece is small enough it doesn’t take up small behind their televisions like clunky cables and other adapters do.

Who knew that by merely picking up and using an onn HDMi to composite AV adapter, I would still be able to use the older televisions in my girls’ rooms for their gaming consoles and DVD players. Saves me in having to buy them new televisions.

Worked great for what I needed! Had an older (not smart) flat screen tv I wanted to set up an amazon firebox on for the grandsons YouTube kids. The only connections was audio video inputs or S video.

This adapter allowed me to hook up the firebox to it then run audio video cables to the TV. Worked GREAT and grandson has his OWN little tv so we can watch what we want on the bigger TV. Everyone is happy!.
