Permatex has and will always be my “go to” for sealing up an engine. Whether I’m working on a motorcycle or automobile they always have what I need and a great product. Just did a timing belt on the old 1999 Honda Civic with 235k miles and oil pan gasket while I was down there, permatex is what I used where needed on the engine and it got us safely to and back from Justin TX and we live in Ada,OK.

More accurate in my opinion than the modern day on board computers that try to calculate to many variables.
There are times when “black” colored silicone adhesive or sealant is nice to have. There are not many brands of black colored silicone in a tube out there, and Permatex is probably the best of those.
With regard to the adhesion and “texture” of the product once set, I can only compare it to the GE Silicone which works so well. I think the GE Silicone II is top notch: Dries firm yet pliable and has excellent adhesion.
This Permatex product, not as much. I have found that while it is a good sealer where a black silicone is needed, it is not a “great” sealer as it can be a little runny, a thinner viscosity than the clear GE Silicone, and takes seemingly long to dry.
I also had a project “pull apart” using the Permatex only to re-do it with GE Silicone II to achieve satisfactory results. The “rare” black color earns it credit. But the dry time, inconsistent setting up and lack of finished pliability knocks it down.
Overall, 4 stars although I wish it were worthy of a 5th star.

I use this pretty much on everything. Simply the best on oil pans aluminum or metal and also timing covers. I will not use anything else on timing covers but this. As far as valve covers just but a new gasket.
This stuff works great but if your valve cover gasket is worn you need a new gasket. Reason being imports usually have o rings or rubber washers. You really can’t use silicone on those. And once those gaskets are crushed for the 1st time no tightening in the world is going to make it not leak.
I am a Master Technician and have been for over 15years. So please consider my advice or not. :).

This was my first foray into making anything out of silicone myself. I was a bit intimidated but thought that a tube of one-component silicone can’t be too hard. I printed a mold for my Geeetech A20M OG hotend off of Thingiverse and squeezed some of this paste into it.
After about a day (with some mild heating in between), the mold was ready. I got best results when I “painted” some dish soap all around the mold using a paintbrush. The cured product is flexible and has withstood many hours at 200-240 °C so I am happy.

I used this for making “silicone boots” for my monoprice maker ultimate 3d printer, and for that, it seems to work pretty darn well, as opposed to mixing my own weird silicone solution. Using 1bigpig’s thing printed in black PLA, I coated the insides of that thing with costco dish soap, and then squeezed enough to maybe fill between 2/5 and 1/2 of the container, and then squeezed.
After a day, I got a usable silicone boot to fit onto my printer. the thing definitely had enough for me to make at least 6 before i decided to stop, and i had maybe gone through 2/3 of the tube. the only negative i’d have is it’s kind of a pain in the ass to get off your hands or any other surfaces it comes in contact with, it kind of stains copper, so i’d be careful about that.

I’ve always use this product combined with the original gasket for better adhesion of components. However the downside is, when not in use the tube gets hard and becomes unusable. I found out if you inject petroleum jelly into the cap and screwing it on will preserve it for a much longer period when storing it.
When you return using it, just squeeze the tube removed the top layer of petroleum jelly and repeat the process again when storing it.

Optimum Grey has a little different characteristics than the Ultra Grey, but more of a refinement than a large change. Seems to have a little longer working period when spread out on the parts, maybe a little thinner in consistency, and maybe just a little more effort to clean up overages (clings better?) – but all in all works great.
This last Summit order I ordered out both Ultra and Optimum and will continue testing. Okay, I went back to the original Ultra Grey after having a valley pan seam come up and weep oil. I cleaned things off and applied the Ultra Grey and no leaks.
So it seems that while the Optimum has a higher temp rating and still makes a great seal, it doesn’t quite like to stick as good to the surfaces. Now sometimes this can be a good thing if you need to take things back apart, but maybe not quite as good as the old Ultra for areas that need to be “glued” down.
Good tack and set on a nv 4500 transmission top. It seals tight and hangs on. Doesnt set too fast to work with the pieces to get everything lined up. It is sticky gooey stuff and will get on everything like never- seize so use caution not to get it all over.

Best silicone I have ever used. I admit I was unsure because I had only used silicone in a tube for the last 40 years. but read on. This pressurized can is 1000 times easier to use than the tube style silicone.
I recommend cutting just the very tip off the dispenser tube. Silicone is released from the can by slightly bending the nozzle just like a can of whipped cream an this makes it very easy to put down a consistent bead of silicone.
I also noticed how smooth the product is with no air bubbles or texture. Lastly how many times have you used a new tube only to find it has hardened by the time you want to use it again. not this stuff.
Numerous times I have needed to use it again and all you do is pull out the little bit of dried silicone out of the end of the nozzle and its ready to use again. It doesn’t harden all the way through the dispensing tube and become useless.
so I intentionally don’t wipe the end off because leaving a little silicone coming out the end makes it easy to pull it out and resume. Great product! I will use nothing else after trying it for the first time.
This is the first time I have used RTV in a can. What a world of difference. It dries in the nozzle when not used, typical but it comes right out the next time you use it, only about an 1/8″ of dried RTV and then good RTV.
