20 Best Roasting Pan America’S Test Kitchen (2023 Updated)

I wanted this pan since I read the NYT recommendation/review, but the price!! When it went on sale I jumped on it. Unfortunately, it took almost two months to come and I kept thinking: “Did I make a mistake?” Thank goodness I waited, the pan is amazing and is one of those lifetime purchases.

My heirs had better fight over it. As others have said, the large just fits in my Wolf wall oven, so measure before you purchase. I can’t imagine anyone needing the XL. I’ve cooked turkeys and roasts in it and they came out perfect.

I then used it to easily carry the remainders of big fixings and slide it all in the refrigerator. The handles alone are amazing and just the quality feel has allowed me to have no regrets. There’s almost no cleaning at all, which must be the high-grade stainless steel.

Just some hot water sitting in it and then the dishwasher, no scraping or scrubbing – so much better than my enamel or cheaper pans.

So very disappointed in BBB for sending me this used pan. I was excited to receive my new All-Clad Large Stainless Steel Roaster with Rack which arrived today. Upon opening the shipping box, The All-Clad box was taped closed on two sides (should have given me a clue) and not sealed properly.

The box was shop worn and dented. I opened the box, which was packed as if someone had thrown it together. The rack and pan were in plastic bags. I pulled them out, examined the pan which was covered in swirls, scrapes and vertical knife marks inside.

It was cleaned with a scouring pad and returned. The bottom of the pan has scrapes and marks all around the edges that one would see with used pans from pulling them in and out of the oven. Nothing shiny and new about this pan.

It was clearly a used and returned and resold to me as new. I’m returning it tomorrow. Very deceptive. I expected more from BBB.

I just LOVE this Steel Roaster. I was concerned at first that it might not hold my 22lb turkey, but I used it today and it worked out beautifully!. The rack does not have pointed “feet” that dig into the pan, as so many others do, so there were no scratches or dings from our monstrous bird.

There was no warping during the 4-hour cooking time. The pan went from oven to stovetop for the gravy preparation, and although this is a long rectangular pan, the heat distribution from my small 8inch electric burner was super.

There was no scorching of the gravy in the section of the roaster that sat directly on the burner. There are only 2 things that did not hit a 5-star rating. First, the weight. Empty, the roaster weighs over 9 pounds.

I expected it would be heavy, but had not counted on that much weight. Add that to the 22 pound bird, and the whole thing weighed in over 32 pounds! It is a good thing my husband is strong -these old bones would have had a lot of trouble trying to lift it.

Second, the bottom of the pan is not level. There are wells all the way around the sides, leaving the center a bit raised. Luckily I make a ton of gravy, so the level of liquid was well above the center of the pan.

If I had wanted to make just a small portion, I would have had to move all that goodness into a smaller pan for the gravy prep. Neither of these is a deal breaker. I’d give them a 4. 75 out of 5 star rating.

just a matter of slight inconvenience. I had intended to spray the inside of the roaster before cooking the bird to make clean-up a bit easier, but I forgot to do that. Didn’t matter. Cleanup was an absolute breeze! Even though the roaster is too big to fit into my sink, the sides are high enough that I basically used it as a wash basin and easily cleaned it without splashing water everywhere.

I am very picky. It is rare that I write a glowing review of any product. This roaster is an absolute joy! I am so glad I did not opt for a less expensive pan. This is well worth the price, and I even got it on sale which made it that much better! I would definitely and whole-heartedly recommend this roaster to everyone looking for a sturdy, reliable, large roaster.

I bought this roasting pan because of the All-Clad name, and because it’s supposedly nonstick. For some reason, I thought nonstick meant that it would be a breeze to clean? For the most part it was. The stuff in the bottom of the roasting pan from our turkey just rinsed right off.

However, there was some sort of film left around the sides, on the inside of the roaster. I washed it three times, thinking each time that I got it off. I used a non-scratch scrubber. I really had to scrub and scrub to get the film off that was around the sides.

That’s why I only gave it 3 stars here. It is a heavy, well-made roaster.

I purchased the large Rachel Ray roasting pan for Thanksgiving. It fits my large turkeys and I had hoped to have it for several years. I have only used it 3 times. HOWEVER, I would not recommend this pan to anyone as the coating on the bottom inside of pan is coming off where the rack feet sit.

As well when washed with just soap, water and a j-cloth even more of the finish has come off. Not a good quality pan at all.

this roaster is so useful. Its the perfect size for a large lasagna or a big batch of enchiladas. the reversible rack is super cool for fitting larger cuts of veggies, under any proteins you are roasting so the delicious pan drippings flavor the veggies below.

the rack helps your proteins sit higher in the pan so they get crisper all around. The pan is also made so you can use it on the stovetop to make a pan gravy after! super versatile. you can also use the rack the other direction to stabilize bell peppers when making stuffed bell peppers.

I only used it a few times but I like it so far. It’s reasonably priced, non-stick with two rack levels. I don’t put any non-stick in the dishwasher even though the manufacturers say you can. It cleans up very easily in the sink.

I did a 20 Lb turkey on Thanksgiving with no problems.

I love the feel and look of the Le Creuset roaster, it oozes quality. I followed the guidance on how to prepare the roaster before first use. I then cooked weeping lamb and it was perfect. I have only had the roaster for just over a week but from first impressions I’m very pleased.

Have had the opportunity to use this pan twice: Once to roast a chicken (6-7 lb) with vegetables (fit perfectly) and once to just roast vegetables. Both times the food came out delicious and what little sticking did occur, cleaned up so easily.

Haven’t used the rack yet (which is thick and sturdy — not thin and flimsy) but am glad to have it, and have no concerns about it being detrimental to my review. This pan is well made, durable, and feels solid in my hands.

Can get a good grip on it when lifting it in and out of the oven. Heats evenly and the bottom is flat so if you need to use it on the stove top to make gravy, it won’t shift around. I wouldn’t consider this pan heavy but it isn’t light either.

Since this is the smaller roaster, it might not hold more than a 10 lb turkey. I only cook for 2 most times so this roaster is perfect but, you could also cook a meal for 4 or 5 as well. I can see one using this pan for lasagne or other casseroles also, when you have a crowd.

Am happy with my purchase and should have broken down and bought one of these long ago.

This Le Creuset small roaster lives up to my (high) expectations. It has both the looks and performance. It has very elegant design, with polished interior and exterior. Tri-ply construction gives it a nice heft.

I have used it to roast a five pound chicken and made gravy afterwards on stove. It did a beautiful job. Note it is pretty much flat bottomed. High quality rack is true non-stick. This roaster is a great size for frequent uses.

The actual size without counting the pouring lip is 0. 75″ less than stated measurements each way. Though the product is made in China, it is in no way inferior. The metal is silky smooth, no rough edge/spot anywhere.

I highly recommend this roaster.

I had a roaster just like this one back in the early 1970s when I used to make a Spanish chicken and rice dish. Had not made it for perhaps 35 years or so when one day, I decided to give it a whirl. For whatever reason, the mood struck me and chicken and rice it was.

I could not find my original recipe but memory did serve me well. Unfortunately, I had not suitable roasting pan so I decided to order this one. I improvised with a Corningware casserole while waiting for delivery but the pan was simply not adequate.

The dish turned out just OK – nothing to write home about – the baking pan was not the right one and one of the seasonings was missing. Later, I recalled what it was. Few days later, along came my order along with this pan in tow so I remade the dish.

This time it was wonderful – just as I recall it from way back when – right pan and the right seasonings. This dish NEEDs this pan. Nothing else will do. Here is the recipe: coat raw chicken pieces (any kind you like) in flour, brown in large frying pan in olive or veg oil and put aside.

Add more oil to frying pan and fry the rice (2 cups raw) in its raw state along with chopped onion and chopped garlic (use your judgement as to how much onion and garlic your family likes. I use one med size onion and 1-2 cloves of garlic) – use low heat on stove top and stir constantly whereupon the rice will pop like popcorn – continue to fry on low heat until onions are translucent.

Use low heat so garlic will not burn. IF your flour turned black in the pan, wipe flour and oil away with paper towel and add fresh oil before frying the raw rice. If you keep heat low, this won’t happen.

Once frying is done, add to the frying pan – 4-1/2 cups water (it will sizzle), 2 tsp of chicken bullion powder (or 2 bullion cubes), 1 TBL curry powder, 2 tsp paprika and 1 tsp of chipolte powder. Optional is 1 TBL pesto from a jar (Prego).

Bring to a boil then pour contents of frying pan into roaster. Arrange chicken on top of rice mixture. Add fresh diced or canned diced tomatoes on top of chicken (1 cup is about right). Include some juice if using canned tomatoes.

Sprinkle on some sliced black olives. You can add some sliced canned jalapenos if you like them. Bake covered for for 20-25 minutes at 375 and remove cover for additional 10 min of baking. Let stand 5 minutes, serve.

Everyone will rave over the dish – it is very tasty. Serve black beans or kidney beans as a side dish, adding some shredded chedder to the top of the beans, if you like.

I like the make, style and size of this smaller roaster. Perfect for 2 people. I do have one problem with it. When it arrived, the box it was in had a tear in it and the edge of the top ring on the bottom part had a dent in it with some white paint (?) on it.

It was still functional and the top lid fit ok, so I decided to just keep it and use it. May have happened during shipping??.

What can you say. I bought the roaster on sale. Just the right size fo me. I cooked a small ham n potatoes. The pan did its job. Easy clean up. I recommend this pan for small family. I’m happy with my purchase.

I ordered this roaster at the last minute when another well reviewed (and similarly priced option) became unavailable. The turkey was brined for about 4 hours, then roasted with rosemary, garlic, and ginger inside and butter basted on top every hour during roasting.

This pan ensured an even roast throughout and a beautiful base for gravy (peppers and onions on the bottom of the pan during roasting. ) When it came time to clean the pan, I was shamelessly eating from the bottom of the roaster itself.

Would recommend and look forward to using again.

Every kitchen needs a good quality roasting pan for your turkey and ham dinners. The Granite Stone roaster pan is sleek looking and has great heat conducting qualities making it the pick for my kitchen! It’s big enough to fit a good size bird or roast- a must for my growing family of 7.

The lid can be inverted in the pan for streamlined storage. This pan meets all I need of it.

This pan is great for a small family. We used it to make Christmas Dinner. We roasted a 10 lb Ham in it. It was a little small, we did make it work using tin foil, but we were unable to put the lid on it.

We’ll use it on smaller roasts next time. It did work great though. Clean up was way easy. Soaked it in dish soap for about 10 mins, then wiped it clean.

The interior is polished to a mirror-like finish and it is flawless. The pan comes with rack that is elevated for more even and quick cooking. The pan can fit a vary large turkey and potatoes and carrots or other vegetables can be put on the bottom.

The handles are ergonomically designed to fit into the oven with ease and provide better grip and weight distribution. I am super impressed at how pleasant it is to just lift this vessel up and slide it into the oven, it is a joy to use.

I like to know this is also dishwasher safe (although I will be handwashing it mostly). Unlike some similar pans, this one can be used on the stove top to reduce sauces or liquids, which is an important feature for me.

I have had this type of pan on my must-have list for a while, and I am thrilled to have it now. The cooking possibilities are endless, and I am looking forward to use it weekly to make such dishes as roasted stuffed peppers, roasted herbed whole chicken, baked lasagna, eggplant parmesan, enchiladas, meat pies and other delicious recipes.

I am a big KitchenAid fan but am new to their cookware. Even so, I am truly impressed by this 5-ply clad stainless steel roaster with rack. My test run was not roasting meat because (1) meat is horrendously expensive at the moment and (2) we are in the midst of an awful heat wave.

So I made a double family sized batch of brownies in the roaster, lined with parchment. With the tall handles, it was necessary for me to remove my top oven rack, because my broiler is mounted very low.

This roaster did a fabulous job evenly distributing the heat, and my brownies were perfectly baked all around. The mirror finish is show-stopping, and cleanup is a breeze. It’s big and heavy-ish, but that is important in a roaster – you don’t want any amount of flex at all.

I would feel confident cooking a huge turkey in this and then using that roaster on the stovetop to make gravy from the drippings. This piece is made to last!.

I took a long time researching roasters and it was between this one and an All Clad roaster. This one won. It’s flat so it can be used on the cooktop (AC isn’t flat so unless you have gas, you can’t use it on electric cooktops).

This one is induction compatible (AC isn’t), and best of all this one is triply so it has an aluminum core. AC is a thick stainless steel only. It cleans up beautifully. It’s sturdy and beautiful. I use it not only to cook but also to hold all my food when I’m cooking outside, as a water bath for delicates, large lasagnas.

It’s the best. Might even get two.

Like these roasters! Easy to clean, roomy and light to lift in and out of oven. Comes with cover also. I don’t bother with a dishwasher; I use hot soapy water with an unabrasive cleanser, or leave to soak for baked on foods which works well.

This beautiful roaster has so many great features not found in your typical, everyday pan. It’s the amazing 5ply construction that’s going to heat quickly and evenly, perfect for browning gravy or making lasagna.

I love the thoughtful feature of handles that go up instead of out to the side. It makes it so much easier loading a turkey in the oven and is especially nice if your oven size is limited. Plus they’re textured making it easier to grip.

The non stick rack is perfect for roasts, turkey or ham. The stainless steel surface cleans up easily and will look like new after every use. You may buy it for the holidays but you’ll be using it year round.

The best quality roaster I have ever encountered, although, it is small. I do not have kids at home now but if they were, this pan would be too small to make holiday meats in. It works fine for my husband and I now though.

I have always put off buying a roasting pan or roaster set thinking I didn’t need it. I would use the disposable pans you buy at the market and forget about it. This year, I saw the amazing sale so I thought I’d give it a go and I’m so thankful I did! Held my Thanksgiving turkey and veg beautifully.

The rack is solid and I don’t have to find another pan to put underneath the flimsy throw away I usually use. On top of that, it cleaned up like a dream. The best part is that I didn’t realize how often I would be putting this to use and not just for the big holiday dinners.

The last turkey pan I bought was over 15 years ago and came with a lid. When I had to shop around for a new one I couldn’t find one with a lid that didn’t require power so I took a chance on this pan after reading all the reviews.

And it DID NOT disappoint. The pan didn’t burn the juices down so I was able to gather the stock and separate the fat to make the most delicious turkey gravy ever. I cooked a 20 pound turkey so I ended up with almost 5 cups of stock, The clean up was also super easy.

No stains were left on the pan at all. We generally hand wash large pans but after thanksgiving we decided to throw it in the dish washer. And it fit perfectly. This was by far the best bang for my buck this holiday season.

I’m going to use the pan to make a giant lasagna for my daughters drive through baby shower!.

Love this pan, Sprayed it down with pam spray on the pan and rack before my turkey went in the oven. Loved the rack was very supportive of the 25 lb. turkey. Pan and rack came clean with no heavy cleaning needed.

(remember I spray with pam before hand). Loved the Turkey lifter, the plastic baster not so much. Overall this was a great deal and products!.

Great roasting pan! Was able to roast a 21. 5 lb turkey for thanksgiving. It was a bit tight though, so next time I’ll stay within the 20lb range suggested on the instructions. To be fair, I haven’t used the roasting rack yet because I’m concerned with the low temperature threshold.

I find it strange that they’d bundle a rack and roasting pan with different thresholds, especially since so many recipes call for things to be heated above 400 degrees. Based on other reviews, I’ll probably just use it as a cooling rack instead.

This is a very well-built product. The handles are riveted in so there is no chance of them breaking. If you soak it with dawn soap it is very easy to get clean. I was taken aback as to how heavy this item is with no bird in it.

I weighed it and the pan alone weighs 6 pounds. It took a little getting used to after all those years of buying disposable aluminum pans. I wish they bent the edges of the pan more so you could pour out the drippings more easily for making gravy.

All in all, I would recommend the product to anyone.

The non-stick surface of this pan is paint! I’ve owned it for several years and over the years the paint has progressively chiped off. Who knows how much paint my family has consumed. I DO NOT recommend this roaster–get a stainless steel roaster!.

It is absolutely wonderful. I didn’t expect it to be as sturdy as it is. The handles are so heavy and the quality is spot on. I highly recommend this purchase if you are looking for a roasting pan.

I bought this based on size, rack, and price. I’m sorry I didn’t go for the stainless steel pan right off the bat. The rack is great, so is the size of the pan. The nonstick coating leaves a lot to be desired.

In the first and only use of this pan an area not even touched began to flake off and another area was heavily scratched from using a baster. This should not happen upon first use, nor with a plastic baster.

We decided to get rid of the pan and go with a much better and more expensive stainless steel roasting pan with a flat bottom, which is better for making gravies anyway.

Nice, shiny heavy stainless steel. What’s not to like? Perfect size for a lasagna or a baked ham. The rack is made of heavy stainless as well and would support a large goose, although the pan is not quite big enough for that.

I got tired of nonstick coatings coming off into my food. Who wants that?! I have complete confidence that this pan will outlast me.

This stainless steel roaster is sturdy and light, but I wish it was a little bit heavier for durability, but I’ll see over time. The handles are a great asset for easy lifting. First time I used the roaster to roast a 6 lb.

duck and it came out fantastic. I always use foil to line the bottom of roasters for easier cleanup and I continued to do so on this one. Easy to clean with warm soapy water. Only a little stain from duck fat, but I was able to get it out with a little more scrubbing.

It recommends to add water to roaster just after your done cooking in it (for easier cleanup) which I didn’t do, but I will do that next time. I waited till the next morning to hand wash it. I will be roasting two ducks next time.

It’s big enough to fit two 6 lb. ducks/chicken. The rack is U-shaped and I had no problems with it. The rack cleaned up really well. No sticky residue left on it. All in all, I love this roaster.

I was looking for a turkey roasting pan with a rack that was NOT nonstick after using a non stick one last year and when pouring the juices out of it the nonstick surface peeled and poured right out with the juices.

I had decided between this one and a few others but the others specifically stated that the rack was chrome plated stainless steel. I didn’t want to deal with anything coated after my experience last year.

This one doesn’t say that so all I can assume is it is total stainless steel. I’ve only used the pan/rack once and that was to make a 22 lb turkey. I was worried it would be a lot of weight because the pan itself is pretty heavy but I managed fine.

In the past I had never actually made gravy in the pan I cooked the turkey in but in the description for this pan it says you can use it on the cooktop~so I did. It was nice not to have to dirty something else to cook the gravy in.

Afterward everything cleaned up very easily. The only cons are that it is heavy but I’m sure that’s what’s needed for its quality. Also, it just felt like the handles on the rack were a bit low for me to lift the turkey out of the pan while using hotpads.

I did it but it seemed awkward maybe mostly because I was also concerned with trying not to allow my hotpads to touch the turkey or burn myself. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with this pan/rack and am relieved that I won’t have to worry about a nonstick surface again!.

This 14″×12″ stainless steel roaster-baking pan with rack is so nice! First it’s very solid and has a good weight to it, so you know its durable. The handles are nice and high, not to low and are held on by two studs on each side so it’s nice and sturdy.

Next the rack is removable and is kinda in a v shape so whatever your cooking gets heated all nice and even. I did a good size chicken and it turned out so good. I was able to move the pan to the burners and make gravy with the drippings.

Which is nice tut o do it all in one pan! I’ve also used the pan without the rack to make a casserole. Which turned out great. It was super easy to clean and required minimal scrubbing, the finish on the pan is beautiful and shiny!.

Scanpan makes excellent products. The roasting pan and tray are a great choice for those who love to roast. The stainless coating makes cleaning a breeze and the durable cast iron is superior and last longer than typical aluminium roasting trays, though more expensive.

The large size is suitable for a large leg of lamb or 2 roast chickens. The heat is evenly distributed. The best part was the washing up. So easy to clean. Great for party size Lasagne. (Remember dont use sharp objects, use a plastic spatula).

Love My Staubs! I love cooking with my Staub collection of black cast iron ‘pots and pans. ’ All beautiful and functional, all purchased at Cook Culture over the past several years. My two cocottes—one large oval, one medium round—each came with a magnetic wood hot pad, perfect for oven to table.

In fact, each of my Staub pieces double as beautiful serving vessels: 10″ Braiser, 8″x12″ Roaster, 4 qt. Round Oven, 10″ Double-handle Fry Pan, and Oval Cocotte. So wonderfully crafted and versatile.

I strongly recommend Staub!.

The Staub Cast Iron Roasting pan with Visual Imperfections, aka ‘seconds’, is a nice combo of lifetime quality and cost. On very close inspection, I think the imperfection on mine is a small eight inch fill in weld on the bottom of a handle.

Almost unnoticeable. As a whole it looks and performs great. Enameled cast iron does not need to be seasoned and is much easier to care for than non-enameled. However, there are reasons this might not be for you.

I mention this to temper expectations that this item is for everyone. (1) it’s heavy. You might not like hauling it around the kitchen. (2) You don’t take care of your cookware (frequently drop it, heat it and drop cold things in it, don’t clean it right away, leave it in the sink soaking in water for days.

). This cookware is sturdy, but not indestructible. Certain kinds of treatment are worse on it than other cookware types. (3) You want non-stick cookware. Enameled is not non-stick. (4)You’re unwilling to adapt to cooking with cast iron.

You’ll probably have to adjust your recipes due to the way cast iron absorbs and distributes heat compared to standard steel or aluminum cookware.

This is my forever roasting pan. The cast iron really holds the heat, and gives great color to the poultry, meats, and vegetables I use it for. Can also go on top of the stove to create nice gravy and sauces.

Made in France, this pan is made to last. Staub will not warp like my previous pan, is very easy to clean, withstands very high temperatures, and is a great serving piece. Love all these features which is why I recommend this to anyone sitting on the fence.

Nice product, but not large enough for a turkey or large ham unless you are covering the pan with foil. The lid won’t work if it’s not a smaller chunk of meat you’re cooking. The rack is nice and the quality of the pan is nice.

It washed up well and is overall a really nice pan.

It is thin and looks inexpensive. Guess what it was. But for a roasting pan that’s fine. Your meat never touches the pan anyway. You just need something to hold the meat off the bottom of pan and collect juices.

If I’m doing a pot roast of course you would use a cast iron pot. The cleanup was easy. It cooks well and so I just be careful when I wash it or put it away. It looks like it could dent easy. This is great for someone who needs a roasting pan a few times a year.

The roaster itself is light weight. My meats cook juicy and easy to take off the rack. I love my new roaster. It was definitely a positive purchase. Also i forgot about the price. The price, the price.

It was a great price for me. Affordable.

All of the pans I have received from Hestan are phenomenal, I use the probond line and it has completely replaced everything I have and most likely will ever cook with, the best pans ever hands down.

Thales pans led me to order the roaster as well. Here are the issues: When it arrived I noticed several things: for starters the roaster is made in Thailand not Italy like the website said at the time (as well as the brochure it comes with, but they fixed the website).

It also does not have sealed rims so it is not dishwasher safe like advertised (unlike the probond cookware series which does have sealed rims) and lastly it is not completely flat on the bottom, it is raised inwards to provide structural support (this means it does not work on induction like advertised and will only work on a gas stove top).

These were of course stark differences from what was advertised as well as from the pans I have loved so I contacted the customer support and was reassured that this misleading advertising was unintentional and that the roaster is not a part of the probond series.

I will say it is a very nice roaster but it would be perfect if it was built as advertised, I do not think It is worth the full price until they change these issues but if you do not care about the price and only plan to use it in the oven and hand wash it then it is still a great roaster.

In terms of the good, it is a thick walled roaster, in fact the thickest one I’ve ever used and in that regard is phenomenal in the oven. The handles are perfect for wearing oven mitts unlike other roasters I have used.

Also, The included rack is stainless steel and not covered in a coating which is perfect and incredibly sturdy. If this roaster had sealed rims and a flat bottom, (and maybe made in Italy if you care about that sort of thing, I don’t but it usually explains why it costs more) then I would love to give this 5 stars and it would definitely be worth the price.

Until then It is noticeably not as amazing as the probond series. Customer service was incredibly attentive and everyone at the hestan team was supportive and understanding and I would happily give the customer service team 5 stars if I could!.

If I could give this roaster more than Five Stars, I would! Heavy duty, functional, with all thoughtful design details! The extra large handles! The stainless steel rack which is sooooo secure! My favorite part is the even cooking and the easy cleanup! I have used this for macaroni and cheese (not as beautiful as the images from this website, but very tasty), and a breakfast casserole.

Gorgeous oven-to-table presentation and then I stuck in the the fridge to store leftovers! I can’t wait to roast my holiday meals!.

Already had other Hestan cookware and loved the quality, and needed an induction-capable roaster so we can finish gravies/sauces on our new induction range. The Hestan is solid, well-built and well-designed – especially the rack handles that are perpendicular to the pan’s handles.

Easy to clean and with the large capacity we wanted. Other roasters we looked at were either flimsier, not as well-built/designed or made in China. Well worth the investment, even if you don’t have induction.

Our kids will probably fight over who gets this in the future.
