Francine Rivers is one of the best authors of Christian fiction. While fiction, it is full of history of the times and the Bible characters represented. My eyes were opened as I saw that 4 of these 5 women were not of Jewish lineage but were included in Jesus’ lineage.

They also had had questionable lives that caused some in the Jewish community to shun them. Interestingly, the men who choose to marry them saw their repentance and change of life and mind. Wonderful look at women who surrendered to God and found fulfillment in their lives.

I know we are all looking for that fulfillment today.

Very good read. Gives more insight into what these 5 Ladies of the Bible might have gone through. Some things I had never thought of. I liked that all 5 stories were included. It lets you read about one of the ladies and then start another when you want to.

Second, be prepared to laugh, there are many parts where you will chuckle, and say “chileee you right about it”. Third, be prepared to have your heart strings pulled (for some of us that’s crying). Certain truths that SJR shared will hit you like a ton a bricks, but stick with it and sit in it because it’s definitely necessary.

So I’ve been following Sarah for almost a year now and her sermons have changed my life in so many ways. It was right in the moment when I needed to find myself but I didn’t know how. This book is helping me heal by “digging to the root to get to the fruit”, it’s helping me find myself, and things I need to change, generation curses I need to break, and how to be closer to God and be the woman God called me to be.

She also lets you know it’s okay to not do things perfectly but to simply know better and do better. I love her “Rescuing Eve” movement. It’s opening up a lot of us woman’s eyes and helping us to forgive Eve because we too have our forbidden fruits.

I recommend any woman or even a man to read this book and recommend it to the woman in your family. Sarah’s “no woman left behind” movement definitely speaks in this book. Get it today! You won’t regret!.

I originally received a copy of this book before it’s release to read and review. I got half way through and gave up. My soul wouldn’t let me continue day to day without reading it. I purchased a physical copy and OMG it’s giving life, therapy, and awakening.

It’s hars to put it down. If you’re looking to grow spiritually and personally this is a definite must to read. This book makes you examine your whole life and get to the root of any preconceived notions we have about ourselves and Eve.

I’ve found myself crying, smiling and laughing while reading this and most of all praising God for allowing Sarah’s words to bring me to a new level in life.

This is a wonderful book I would have wanted to have while growing up. My six year old daughter loves this book. Every time we finish a story she wants to know more (we have already books on several of these amazing women).

Every day she runs to get the book when she returns from school. It’s a great resource for parents who would like to raise future empowered women. Through each story a mother can pass on to their daughters values of justice, equality, hard work, self trust, self worth and how capable we all are to follow our dreams and be unique.

However there is one constructive criticism I would like to make regarding one of the stories. I was quite surprised to find Eva Perón as a role model and making it in a short list like this and frankly feel very uncomfortable with the way she is portraid in the book.

I was born and raised in Venezuela and understand quite well Latin American politics. Eva Perón should not be in that book as her legacy of populism is one that has been repeated in other countries and that has had terrible consequences in Latin Amrica in the past decades.

She was undoubtedly powerful but not necessarily good. Why not be safe and choose someone more influential and stronger in spirit and kindness like Mother Theresa? Finding Eva Perón or the choice of a couple of pirates instead of valuable women was disconcerting and made me doubt of the accuracy in the portrayal of some of the women listed.

Also as mentioned in the another review the title could be re-thought as to make it easily accessible to boys as well. Closing in a positive note I was very pleased to see also many Italian women in the list having lived there for 5 years and coming from a half Italian family.

I consider this a beautifully diverse list of inspiring women that lived before us or are still alive leading us through their courage in other parts of the world and helping us become better in what ever our field and life path is.

Good job to the authors! Thinking to buy 10 copies to give to my nieces and close friends (However will do so with certain notes of caution).

Hi, I was so happy and excited to have found a book with the message I had in my heart for so long, and in a way that could be passed along to my little nieces and nephews! That they could be and like anything and everything, no matter their gender.

As soon as I was able, I ordered copies for all of them, and for myself 🙂 I started reading it as soon as I received mine and was very happy with my purchase until I reached the story of the little boy, Cody (p46 of the French edition).

The story of Cody starts with something along the lines of “Cody is a boy but he likes pink and sparkly shoes so he is clearly really a girl and would like to be treated as such”. This sentence is so wrong on so many levels, I felt sad and betrayed reading it.

So if you fit a certain stereotype of what girls are supposed to like, you are a girl? And then, how should “be treated as a girl” be interpreted? This story really struck me as completely opposite to the message I am trying to spread, as I thought the authors did with this book, which is that you should never be boxed in or treated a certain way because of your gender.

You’re not less of a girl because you like maths, or lifting weights, and you’re not less of a boy because you like pink, and neither should be treated any different because of their gender. I would very much like to get an explanation from the authors as to how this could ever be conceived as an accurate message for little girls and boys everywhere, and not the total opposite of what the rest of the books says? I think I will wait for a satisfactory answer to this before ordering the 2nd volume, since I don’t want to have to tear out another story as I had to do before gifting this volume.

This is a great, accessible and entertaining book written by a true expert in the field. Deborah Tannen’s book will make you look at your daily conversations with both men and women in a more analytical light.

While males and females do not posses inherent communicative differences, this book does make an important point about the different ways in which boys and girls are socialised, and the resulting differences in their language use.

This book is not only an excellent guide for both men and women who want to improve their understanding of others, and improve others’ understanding of them, but also a nice guide for interested academics looking for an introduction to gender differences in language.

Although written in a very readable style, Tannen’s book is thoroughly referenced (unobtrusively, in endnotes) and indexed, and represents a perfect springboard toward original studies for those who are interested.

A unique book.

It all comes down to the core of the issues between men and women. I even learned a few things about men such as the fact men talk more than women. I learned more about women, and it’s a good reminder that society has played a role in what men and women’s roles should be.

Very positive, and I think it’s helpful for those who don’t have experience in the dating game.

Mary Beard gives an interesting historical perspective of the silencing of women’s voices – going back to the dawn of philosophical and historical thought. The perspective is very much through a European lens for comparison of then and now.

Australian readers in particular will draw parallels of the language used against our own women in leadership roles and reflect on how similar patriarchal thinking has retained its usual prejudices towards women who speak out.

Overall it is a well researched and thought out manifesto.

I have not read it yet. I am almost finished. ‘Francis 1’ by Leonie Frieda. Fantastic history/biography, very easy to read even for people who are not interested in history or biography.

I will purchase this and any ensuing updates for both my daughters. Mary Beard gets to the heart of how women are silenced in public life and explores ideas that may help provide the basis for change.

I highly recommend this important book.

I read this book on the recommendation of both my daughter and my son. The first few pages did not seem to be my cup of tea but I persevered and was very soon hooked. Couldn’t wait to get back to reading each evening.

Fascinating and so well researched. The author’s end notes also very interesting. I have bought a copy for my sister’s birthday.

Great novel involving the work at Bletchley Park and the breaking of German codes during the war. Make sure to read author’s notes regarding the real life people who inspired the characters. These “nerds” saved the world and never broke their vow of secrecy.

“The Imitation Game” was a movie based upon the same era. Enlightening and Inspiring.

This well written fictional book portrays the code breakers in a fair light now that it can be openly discussed. There were many code breaker groups and most seemed to experience similar settings to what is portrayed in this book.

The book was pretentious. I was hoping for more humor and creativity, less snobbery and rarified air. Also-the book arrived with damaged corners.

A wonderful read. I’ve opened it time and time again and still love it. Full of inspiration.

this is an amazing book…i bought it for myself, and also have several women friends i will be giving it to for xmas!

It goes into the psychology of how women relate to money; I found myself laughing out loud at this section. Because it is ridiculous, and because it’s true. I’m a working single parent; I was afraid this book would focus on the housewife crowd.

But, the advice is universally sound for all women. It inspired me to ask for a promotion at work. (I got a raise – which more than paid for the book in the first week – and the promotion paperwork has been filed, which will result in a second raise.

Yay!) I also moved my young daughters’ savings into higher interest rate accounts and involved and explained to them every step and the reasoning behind it. They were facinated and I know it will make a lasting impression, I wouldn’t have done any of that if it weren’t for the book.

It is very informative and defines and de-mystifies all that bank and broker jargon. She includes a month-by-month plan with a few steps each month, to help ease women into taking control of their money.

I hope she comes out with a second edition because the economy has changed so much since this was written & I wonder if any of her advice / strategies have changed.

This is a book every YOUNG person should study to help them with their financial situations. This book opens your eyes on how to handle your money wisely and not get in the trap of over spending. Advice on how to save for a home and how to set up a retirement plan that is extraordinarily simple.

I had read this book before and enjoyed it. I bought two copies for my neices. Orman provides good no nonsense advice for men and women. I feel I can trust her advice. I have followed her advice in many aspects of my finances, and have not suffered from the recession as yet.

Yes, I lost money on investments, but I have time for those investments to recover. I was reasonable well positioned prior to the downturn. Each chapter contains action steps to get the reader on firm financial footing.

Highly recommneded.

Just finished this book and it was one of my favorites! Kept me engaged, so invested in January as a character and the two main characters in general, always kept me interested and wanting to pick it back up.

A romance writer who is beginning to doubt if love really exists. A fiction writer whose personal life is making it hard to write at all. Can the secrets they both have bring them together? Beach Read by Emily Henry is a true beach read.

Love, lust, mystery, heartache, humor and the beach. While it took me a couple chapters to really get into the story(all on me, not the book), in the end, I couldn’t put it down and needed to know how it ended.

January and Gus are easy to relate to but also have their own idiosyncrasies that make them stand out among other leading characters. I could honestly see being friends with them both. The unique storyline of dueling writers and styles plays a large part in the book but in the end, I found that the story was more about finding friendship in unlikely places and in spite of secrets.

What may seem like an odd pairing in the end is what can make the bond between people stronger. “I’ve never met someone who is so perfectly my favorite person. “.

This was a perfect gift for my friend! The front cover had a “to” and “from” section so that I could write in there for her:). I flipped through it and there were a ton of positive phrases. I recommend it!.

I think I have bought at least 8 of these now! Great gifts! I think I was more committed to reading this devotional than I have been any other.

Jennifer spins another amazing novel that spans a lifetime and discusses Motherhood, racism & sexism even the dreaded CANCER. It is very relevant.

I’m reading this now. What a great insight into growing up “different” in the 60’s. I’m a little over halfway through and didn’t want to put it down last night to go to sleep.

Great book! I love Jennifer Weiner’s books because they are all so different from each other. Mrs. Everything kept my attention throughout.

Ella of Frell is fifteen years old and lives with her father Sir Peter and mother Lady Eleanor their cook Mandy and other servants in the kingdom of Kyrria ruled over by King Jerrold and Queen Daria who are the parents of Prince Charmont (Char).

At her birth the foolish fairy Lucinda gave Ella the gift of obedience but it turns out to be a curse because she must automatically obey every order given to her regardless of what it is whether hopping on one foot for a day or even chopping off her own head.

After Lady Eleanor dies Sir Peter marries the odious Dame Olga who has two equally odious daughters Hattie and Olive. Then her father promptly leaves on a business trip. In the meantime Ella and Char have fallen in love but Ella knows that she can’t marry him while under the curse so she goes on a quest encountering ogres and giants in order to break the spell.

Will she succeed? Or will the Prince find another bride? Ella Enchanted which was a Newbery honor book in 1998 is Levine’s take on the traditional Cinderella story giving her own explanation of how the heroine came to have a wicked stepmother and stepsisters ended up becoming a servant and is finally chosen by the Prince.

One could see the book as making fun of the traditional vows of brides to ‘love honor and obey’ their husbands. Or one could view it simply as showing that obedience doesn’t or shouldn’t necessarily reduce a person to mere chattel slavery.

Each reader will have to decide that for himself. There are references to drinking wine brandy and ale. And of course whenever you have princely balls you are going to have mention of dancing. In 2006 Levine went on to write Fairest a retelling of the Snow White story set in the same world as Ella Enchanted.

The plot of Ella is presented in an interesting way though it will probably appeal much more to little ‘princesses’ rather than little ‘princes. ‘ It is easy to read and I basically enjoyed it but like several others I thought the book really couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a hip ‘modern day fairy tale’ or a traditional medieval-type story.

It seems to bounce back and forth almost willy-nilly between the two moods. While it is not a bad book I have to wonder why it was chosen for a Newbery Honor award. The reason is probably that as one reviewer called it an ‘examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales ‘ it presents ‘a spunky intelligent female lead’ that is quite in tune with the modern feminist ideal.

A movie was made in 2004 that was very loosely based on the book and some people expressed the opinion that the film was less disjointed and confusing than the novel though it is quite different in many respects.

I read this book when I was in middle school and have recently bought this book for the daughter of one of my friends who was really excited to get it. I still love this book so much and it is one of my favorite fairy tale retellings.

If you geek out to fairy tale re-tellings as much as I do, you are going to want this as a part of your collection. Ella is the type of heroine we should encourage our daughters and girls of tomorrow to be.

Don’t be fooled by the movie. this is no sudsy musical number where it is all about Ella getting the guy and fighting off the prince’s evil villain uncle. Ella shows girls how to be strong when hope seems lost, when things are at their most frustrating, and Prince Char is an actual gentleman who is concerned with being friends with Ella first, not a mere charming romantic lead.

Quite literally a ‘charming’ book. Fantasy is not my usual genre but this book did seem so sweet. I’m happy to have read it now but there are some things that disappointed me. Since birth Ella was cursed by a fairy to always be obedient.

Although it is good for growing children to obey their elders a curse of obedience can be one’s downfall. It definitely made an interesting plot to see how Ella would deal with following every command (even from her friends) and especially the commands that people didn’t really mean for her to do yet she had to struggle through anyways.

I rather think that some parents may not like the attitude that Ella takes on; because she knows that she is cursed to obey every command she literally wills herself not to obey even for trivial tasks.

I didn’t exactly like the way that Ella balked at the tiny things but I suppose that her challenging spirit had to be revealed somehow. Another point that disappointed me in the story is the twist that the author adds at the end.

Basically it is an exact retelling of the Cinderella story. I was quite dumbfounded that she didn’t omit one detail and copied the Cinderella story so precisely. I realize that the author was tying the two plots together but it could have been done more discreetly with tact.

Ella has good wits a noble heart and much creativity. Several times throughout the story she reminded me of the character Emily Byrd Starr from the ‘Emily’ novels by L. M. Montgomery. If you like ‘Ella Enchanted’ then you should try the ‘Emily’ series.

Very good. At first I didn’t think I was going to like it. But after going to a book club and discussing it w other women and sharing our personal experiences and how they related to the book, I loved it!! There were some very emotional discussing we all had and important stories to be shared share.

An excellent book club book.

It’s been on my shelf to read for far too long – the book club was the perfect opportunity to pick it up and dive in. and WOW. Dr E has a way of breaking down all those little parts of ourselves that we’ve never quite been able to recognize and love as we should.

She’ll walk you through the journey of discovering your Wild Woman inside and you’ll awaken from it with a whole new expanse of understanding and appreciation for the Wild Woman in us all.

I found Estes writing style quite verbose; she reiterates the same points too excessively using really overly descriptive words. I really wish she could be more clear & concise. The intro alone was enough for me to want to throw the book at the wall, but I persisted because I have heard & read so many rave reviews about this book.

Unfortunately I didn’t find it got much better. I found her writing style very frustrating, mentally draining & hard to stay interested in. However I think I will buy it on audio book so I can listen to it in the car & see if I can get past my frustrations and understand the core messages better, & honestly, more importantly actually understand why it gets such great reviews.

A great story about dedicated American women during WWII. Few of today’s Americans, women or men, seem to have the resolve show by the ladies in the book.

I am just beginning to read the book but I can say it is well researched. Having worked and lived in Washington since the 1950’s many of the places mentioned are familiar. It is wonderful to re-visit them in the book.

I am amazed by the depth of research and perspective of the WW II period and look forward to completing the story.

Normally I am a slow reader, but this amazing book was read in three weeks. My daughter went to Goucher, which was mentioned in the book. It was not easy putting the book down. When finished I mailed the book to my daughter.

I Am Malala is a beautifully written memoir recounting the violent relationship of the Taliban with the people of primarily Pakistan. This relationship is akin to that of an abusive domestic one, as the militant group seeks to isolate, control, and terrorize its mostly unwilling subjects.

Malala describes an idyllic existence in Pakistan’s Swat Valley prior to the arrival of the Taliban. Her words slowly take apart her beloved homeland, as militants destroy important ancient landmarks and attempt to rewrite history and infiltrate Pakistan’s rich culture.

Named for Malalai of Maiwand, Pakistan’s version of Joan of Arc, Malala is a special girl who is very close with her family, especially her father, the founder of the school she attends. Malala and her friends find respite from the near constant bombings and shootings on the streets of their city at school six days per week.

Unfortunately, Malala’s school and father are under threat from the Pakistan Taliban to close the school’s doors, as its values do not coincide with those of Sharia Law. Following in the footsteps of her beloved father, Malala began speaking out against militancy and championing the right of girls to be educated and giving interviews to various news outlets at age eleven.

Amid suicide bombings and the mass blasting of schools, Malala perseveres, continuing to attend school despite constant threats to cease her education. The Taliban virtually takes over Pakistan, while authorities stand idly by, merely allowing mass killings, all in the name of Sharia.

Malala bravely asserts in an interview that the Taliban “are abusing our religion. ” In October 2012, Malala was targeted and brutally shot by a member of the Taliban, along with two girls sitting on either side of her, due to her standing up for the education of girls and speaking out against terrorism.

Miraculously, Malala and her two classmates survived the attack and escaped Pakistan. Malala is the youngest person ever to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and continues to advocate for universal education through her personal fund.

I never thought I would be interested in reading Malala’s whole story, but I was captivated by her words. Not only am I in awe of Malala’s accomplishments and good deeds, I am amazed and deeply saddened by the destruction of her homeland and culture.

Malala tells her story in such a way that makes it easy for the reader to empathize with her and her situation. As I read I Am Malala, I imagined what it would be like if my home country, the US, were overrun by terrorists who want to destroy everything that I love and believe in.

I admire Malala’s courage very much and truly hope she is able to one day return to her beloved Pakistan.

I bought this for one of my grandchildren and had it mailed directly. A great way to encourage good reading topics for family. I’ve seen several interviews and short docus. of this young woman and her efforts to make good changes in hey society.

Buy for the young readers in your family.

A great look into a world different to mine. I know a lot about the religion and country. Interesting to read from a child’s point of view. Perhaps if everyone read this there would be less blood shed.

This book provides firsthand excellent insight into issues and emotions facing gay men. It was helpful to my gay son in ways that only he could articulate, and upon his request, I read it. As his mother, I found it informative and quite moving.

I believe this excellent book has made me a better person. This is the updated version, which is the one I suggest you buy.

Written by a gay man and therapist, this book hits every nail on the head of all the things that impact a gay man’s life from the moment he realizes he is “different. ” Much of the material concerns shame and its insidious impact on nearly every aspect of gay life.

Simply stated, the best book this reader has come across on this topic. If you are a gay guy who is experiencing any difficulties in your life, this book is sure to give you fresh insight.

This book spoke to me. I imagine it would to most men in a similar situation. Even those from a different generation.
