20 Best Product For Messy Textured Hair (2023 Updated)

I think the first thing that really strikes me is the smell of the product, it is very subtle yet so good. It’s always hard to find a good texture spray that doesn’t harden your hair so much. This is extremely flexible.

It gives it that extra flair when you are styling but I wouldn’t say it is a super strong hold since it is a little more loose. I ended up purchasing the full size after getting a smaller size from a holiday kit.

I obviously loved it enough to buy a full size, it’s worth trying if you love those beachy waves for an easy way to bring in a little texture!.

i have fine, wavy and oily hair. my fav way to use this is to spray on damp roots before i blow dry for volume. it’s also great on dry hair. it is pretty drying when used on dry hair, but honestly that’s a plus since i’m oily.

it gives nice grit and a little grip too. smell is very strong (but nice) coconut. i’m not easily overwhelmed by strong smells and this one still gets to me a little. it’s really only an issue while spraying it.

once it settles down in your hair it’s very yummy!.

I got the travel size to try adding more volume to my roots/hair and maybe wave it. Tried it dry, didn’t do much other than coat it in a pretty nice smell. Then I used it wet. like instructed. I had to wash my hair again afterwards.

It was STICKY! Waxy, tangled, it literally stuck up in the air after I lifted a strand. My husband was even surprised. Either I used this wrong, which is unlikely considering I followed their instruction video, or this doesn’t suit me one bit.

Hate wasting product, but I am too scared to try again.

I have naturally curly hair, but have used this product after I straighten my hair and am on day 2 or 3 and want to give it that beach wave look. It doesn’t seem to do the trick. I have also tried using it after I’m on day 3+ of using the Le Duo or 32mm Wand.

I don’t think it does much for my waves. I did however, just read a post from jasmine Rae on how she uses this product BEFORE curling her hair to help give texture and grip for the curl to hang on too.

I am definitely going to try that. I have used another brand of the same type of spray and would have given it zero stars, because of how it left my hair feeling. This product is not as bad, but you have to keep in mind it is a sea salt spray.

If you been to the ocean, you know how the natural ocean water spray leaves your hair feeling. I’ve read comments how people are really disappointed about this l’ange product, but it is meant to give the same effect, so you can’t really be surprised at the feel it leaves behind!.

This is one of my absolute favorite L’ange products. I use it for a quick wash and go when I don’t have time to heat style. I have straight hair with no wave whatsoever, but with this product I can actually achieve a beach wave curl using no heating tools.

I let my hair airdry while I apply makeup then spay Sat and Sea on hair and scrunch a bit, let it dry up a bit then spray Troi Chic Hairsprayand scrunch some more. Instant Beach waves. I figured this out on vacation going from pool day to dinner with limited time to style, and I have been doing it ever since.

Smells so amazing and refreshing. Adds body and volume to any type of hair and is very lightweight, not sticky at all. Also great to use on 2nd and 3rd day hair to refresh style.

Hey Axe, I never write reviews but since I’ve been a customer since who knows when I figured I would send you some feedback. I ordered a couple of new tins of the Flexible Paste and one of them had the new label and the other had the new label.

I used the original labeled tin and it was the same paste that I had grown to love. Then when I opened the newly labeled tin I realized that you guys had changed the formula. It’s not like a really, really thick lotion as opposed to a styling paste.

This was a terrible decision, not sure why there was a change but I am sad to report that I am no longer an Axe customer and currently on the hunt for a replacement. Good luck out there!.

I just wanted to voice my dissatisfaction with one of your hair care products, which is the Messy Look Flexible Paste. I have pretty short thin hair, and this is literally the only product I have found (discounting spending $30 on a 0.

0005 oz can of something overpriced) that does exactly what I need it to, since it’s nice and thick and I only need a tiny amount to get the job done. I’ve been using this product religiously for over 5yrs, and last time I bought it, it had the new tin can packaging.

Not only is it far less product for the same cost (I can get over that), but most importantly it seems as though the recipe has changed. It’s much runnier than it used to be, and to be honest it just does a terrible job on my already terrible hair.

I would really like to see at least the former version of this paste brought back into production, even if it is in the same tin can, and I would continue using it. But for now, I’m going to be searching far and wide for another comparable brand to use, even if it means ordering some obscure brand from Amazon.

This new version is simply terrible, and I was enlightened to see the top “Most helpful critical review” expressing my same point of view. Please change it back, it’s the only thing in my life that’s worked well on this noggin.

I decided to try this product because it is advertised as requiring only a small amount to achieve hair perfection. I initially thought that this certainly couldn’t be true. How could only using a small amount of Axe Messy Look Flexible Paste provide the hold I’m looking for, while not requiring a load my hair up with a tremendous amount of hair products? Boy was I wrong! You only need to put a small amount on your finger tip, rub it on your fingers, and ultimately through your hair.

Immediately out of the package you can start to smell its clean but fresh aroma. It’s a pleasant scent, but also one that won’t go unnoticed by the ladies. The texture and hold is about medium. I especially like this product because it gives your hair a very soft feel, while also hold it into place where you like.

It avoids the hard feeling of most gels, while not sacrificing the integrity of your look. Overall I am beyond please with the results of this product and will continue to use it for that perfect, fresh look.

My boyfriend and I got to try this product thanks to XY Stuff and Axe in exchange for our honest opinion! My boyfriend used this product for about a week. He found that this product was great compared to other gels he had used in the past.

The formula held his hair great for hours on end. The product was not sticky or stiff. His hair looks amazing, no crunchy gel look to it and smelt great! I used this product to help keep my fly aways back for an up-do I did.

I usually stay away from gel products as they tend to leave my hair stiff and crunchy. But Axe’s Matte Gel is totally different – and I love it! The product is super easy to apply. There is no stickiness and it allows me to play around with different styles as I use it.

Y’know, these hair products are varied and it takes time and trials to find just the right product for you. This product works great for me. My hair is very fine but very dense. By that I mean each hair is silky and fine but there are tons of them.

The liquid version of this is good too but gives a firmer result. I often combine them a bit. A little, like dime-sized dollop works great on my relatively short haircut. Not very expensive and it works well for me.

I initially got this pomade given that I have longer hair, we all get fly always and I wanted something that wasn’t gel and hardening. It lasts long. However, after a while, it seemed to have dried out even after making sure the container was closed.

Maybe I got unlucky with the one that I’ve purchased and should give it another shot. It is a little tough to spread across your hair without leaving a white streak that you’ll have to continuously massage into your hair until it goes away.

I tried a lot of clays. this Clay is the best for a bang for your buck! You want that model look? Just take about a dime’s worth put it on your palms. spread it out evenly on hands. hit the hair with it.

and to make it even better use a blow dryer as you’re combing up. and boom you have an official sick hairstyle. Love this product.

The product is good, but I was a little disappointed because its qualities are very different from what is advertised. They promise a matte effect, but it leaves the hair shiny, very shiny. They promise total control over the hair, but the correction is not very strong (at least for my type of hair with thick strands).

The product resembles a type of glue and leaves the hair very heavy and gooey. Summary of the work: it looks like I applied a gel. herg. The smell is interesting, but, unlike the other TIGI products I’ve used, it is very strong, persistent and nauseating.

My hypothesis is that it is more suitable for very fine hair, where the amount of product needed is less to provide good control. To raise thick hair, I recommend TIGI Mastermind.

I have very straight hair that tends to stick up when I wake up and then later gets very flat. A dime sized amount of this, rubbed between my hands and applied to damp hair adds just enough volume and tames my hair.

One of my go-tos and I recently repurchased again when it went on sale! This is usually enough for day-day looks. Sometimes I’ll add a sea-salt spray or the Bed Head hair stick to add some more dimension.

Each tub lasts me 8-12 months, great value.

To say that I can’t live without the Bedhead Manipulator is a gross understatement! I have a short pixie cut and seriously love the strong hold of this molding paste! A small dime-sized amount goes a long way and once applied to hair, it’s easy-peasy to shape into any hairstyle.

I wouldn’t recommend this product for those with long, thin hair but if you have thick short hair, then give this a try!.

also not thick where u can’t mix it with other products BUT still strong enough to use alone. I’ve been on the hunt for an Oribe texture spray dupe bc I use it so much and so often that I’m not down to spend 30$ a month on spray.

I refuse. I kinda wanna say this is a really good dupe for Oribes texture spray, so far this will be my new holy grail texture spray. Nothing compares to Oribe but this is deff very close!!.

My hair has always been fine and straight, but as I’ve aged it seems to have developed some wave in the back. I’ve tried wearing the ever-so-cute angled bob because I thought it would be an easy blow-dry and go, wrong! I would spend more time fighting my hair in the back because it did what it wanted, even after using a flat iron.

So, I told my stylist to cut the angles of my bob shorter and add some layers. She did AND introduced me to the Matrix Texture Builder. I now absolutely love my hair. I add some curls in the front sometimes to match with the waves in the back, spray my hair with the texture builder, run my fingers through and I’m done! Then the following 2 or 3 mornings I run a pick through my hair to get out the night tangles, spray on the texture builder, tousle with my fingers and go.

So easy and my hair looks great all day!.

First of all, this stuff smells amazing. It has an amazing salon, almost coconut-y scent that is just awesome. I like spraying this on my roots for added texture. It works well. It’s similar to a dry shampoo but with no residue.

It just gives my hair enough texture to style without being super soft and slick. I still need to use hair spray to hold any style. My boyfriend has kind of long hair and he enjoys this product too.

I love American crew products, and this fiber cream is by far my favorite of the line now. This product is not a thick cream, doesn’t dry, flake, or become hard, or greasy. A softer more moldable cream version of fiber for those who used it long ago.

A very small amount in towel dry hair. My hair is about 3 inches and works great. A true medium hold. Also good in shorter hair too. Thank you, American crew!.

This is NOT the same American Crew Fiber that I’ve been using for the last several years. Inexplicably, they changed their formula to something softer and that does not hold all day the way it used to.

The first time I saw this, I thought the supplier either sourced a fake batch or didn’t store it property. This is infuriating. To change the product being sold with no announcement or disclaimer label is dishonest at best and counterfeit at worst.

Using the pomade: The product is good at taming flyaways for a slicked-back hairstyle, without the crusty feel. It does initially leave a slightly greasy appearance to your hair but that seems to go away as the product sets in.

I advise melting it a bit on the back of your hand first as the pomade is quite firm. Also, don’t be put off by the colour as it brushes in clear. Pomade scent: Not a bad scent in my opinion, however I think it is far too strong.

When I buy a pomade it is to style my hair with, not to add a smell to my hair. I don’t want to smell it over my shampoo and conditioner, and I certainly don’t want to smell it over my perfume as I can with this.

Due to the fragrance I won’t be buying this again and I probably won’t even finish the pot I purchased. In summary, if you don’t mind the scent and strength of it than this will be a good product for you.

I actually bought this for my husband and stole it from him! I had my hair up on a windy day, and my new growth/baby hairs at the top of my head and temples got blown loose and were sticking up and out of my ponytail.

I dipped the tip of my finger in this and just applied to the flyaways, and this laid them right down and they stayed! I have new grays coming in at the crown that stick straight up, and this lays them down too.

This and hairspray are the only things that tame my flyaways, and I prefer this because it’s not drying to the hair and doesn’t give that stiff, crunchy hairspray feel. I like it second day too – it sort of soaks in and leaves my hair with a healthy shine (but doesn’t look wet).

A few words of caution: use the tiniest bit or it can look greasy. Start by just dipping in your finger tips and see if that does the trick before adding more. Also, this has a strong tuberose smell at first.

I find it does dissipate and will fade to nothing, but if you’re sensitive to scents try to check it out in store first.

I really wanted to like this product because I like to have my hair in a slicked back bun but this just wasn’t it. My hair is dark brown and this leaves a white cast on my hair, this is best for blondes or light coloured hair.

It does have a good hold for a while but does loose it after some time like traditional mouse/gel. It smells like rose which isn’t bad and it’s not overpowering but I can’t use it because of the white cast.

I even tried combing it through, doesn’t work or help at all. I hope they release a brunette version of this product because I would definitely buy it.

This is a product I use on the daily for my both of my son’s hair. It helps to style their hair and stays all day long. The consistency is light feeling. Their hair stays smooth feeling. No stickiness or crunchy feeling.

It’s a great product, no doubt. I’m not the world’s best paste-applier, but I’ve found that with thicker, waxier products. I need lessons. It’s much easier for the hairdresser. If I could remover my head before applying styling product, I think I’d do a lot better.

I love this stuff. I see use it when I had a really short pixie haircut. It did give me some texture. I would just add a little bit with. And it would give me some texture and give me a little bit more of an edgy look.

I honestly did not like this hair paste. It was hard to work with and was hard to wash out of my hair at the end of the day. It does have a strong hold to it though. I also wouldn’t recommend using a lot cause if you don’t rub it in all the way you’ll have clumps in your hair or white paste somewhere on your head.

I honestly think it depends on the kind of hair you have too; thickness or something to that extent.

I got to try this in the Old Spice VoxBox. The first thing I noticed about this product, is how similar the texture was to the Old Spice Spiffy pomade, which I really liked. Very lightweight, creamy, and not at all sticky or waxy.

The product claims to have a medium hold and a textured finish. I used this for a more messy look. It tamed down flyways, and what I liked most is that it gave my hair a really great glowy, clean look.

Not shiny or sticky, but a very healthy glow. I have to use this product in more ways to know how it works with different styles, however I would recommend this as a good styling product for a nice shine.

Old Spice unruly hair past is fantastic! The first thing I noticed was the fancy packaging. As I get older I am more and more interested in the types of products my father and grandfather used to wear.

This is a modern day take it n one of those products. The second thing I noticed is how great the product smells! It smells masculine but it doesn’t choke you out. This is not a constant with Old Spice products so I was happy to discover the pleasant and not overwhelming scent.

Finally, the unruly paste has a very strong hold that lasted about five hours for me. Today was a windy day so the Unruly past was really put to the test. I love this product and would buy it again!.

I like it because you can use it in different ways! I prefer to rub it onto my hands and style accordingly. I feel like I get more control over it this way! Sometimes using it directly on the head creates a tug or pull depending on the hair texture!.

This is a great product for use on coarse, wavy hair. It moisturizes and softens hair, yet still creates fullness and enhances natural waves. The stick format allows for mess free application and makes it hard to over apply.

Scent is a citrus lemon-grass type and is very faint. Highly recommended!.

This seriously replaces all of them. Absolutely no competition. Reformer has the best smell, best hair volumizing properties, amazing shaping ability, and just a hint of shine. I mean the absolute slightest shine, while still appearing matte-like.

Lastly, it washes out so easily. Seriously, I feel that you will not regret buying this. One last thing. I can smell my own hair when wearing the product and I the strength of the smell definitely varies directly with the amount used.

So, start light and wear it for a few hours. The smell lasts all day. The smell complements whatever cologne you’re wearing. So far, this is the best hair paste I have tested.

My husband has been using this product for years! We wish we could find it in store at ulta but love that they brought he product back to the website! He uses it every day when he works and his hair always has some sexy volume and keeps his hair flexible enough he can run his hands through it but it’s also strong enough to keep the shape if he didn’t play with it.

This was my second time trying an [brand:ouai] product and this was highly recommended to me by more than one person. I first tried the and loved it. I need to get my hands on a fill size of that baby ASAP.

But I needed a new hairspray that did more for me than just “hold” my hair. This texturizing spray really adds dimension to my hair. I like to use my (that I’ve had since I was 12 by the way) and spritz this product into my roots to finish it off.

It really does make a difference and I’m glad I purchased this to add into my hairstyling routine. I did take away one star because the smell is. a lot. Its not bad, its just very fragrant and enough to turn some people away from buying.

I still haven’t decided if I’m going to repurchase this or not, but I’m happy with it for now, and time will tell!.

I bought the trial size, and the first time I tried it, I was immediately struck by how strong the fragrance is. I also found that I needed to spray a lot in my hair to see a noticeable effect compared to other texture sprays I’ve used.

Cons: it’s overpriced and the contents don’t last long if you use it every day. If the product lasted longer I wouldn’t have an issue with price. I recommend this product for those who have fine hair and don’t want a heavy texturized feel.

If you don’t like strong smells, this product is definitely not for you.

I have been using clay pomade for many years, my favorite and still is Jack Black clay pomade, it’s phenomenal clay. I forgot to pack my usual product so i needed some matte clay on a trip i was on and Walmart doesn’t carry Jack Black so i got this based on reviews, but it’s definitely not for my fine blonde hair, it doesn’t have a strong hold maybe a medium hold, I couldn’t run my fingers through my hair with this stuff in, it was sticky, didn’t seem to be matte since it made my hair look oily and a heavy weighed down feel.

The smell was unpleasant. Couple of things was good, it was pliable and luckily.

I absolutely love the smell of this! No really, it has one of the nicest scents in a product marketed for men I’ve ever found. It leaves a lovely matte finish on the hair, doesn’t look greasy at all and lasts all day.

It’s fairly firm and I recommend rubbing between the hands to warm up, then rubbing through the hair. Its really good for volume too. This is really good for flyaways if you wear buns or have your hair tied up as it doesn’t go crispy like hairspray does.

It comes out without much fuss in the shower. It also has a sponge on top of the product which stops it drying out. You do have to apply by sticking you fingers in the tub but if you’re not worried about that then this is 100% gold.

This is one of the best moulding paste I’ve used. It holds hair up nicely and smells great. You need to rub the clay in your hands for at least ten seconds before applying so that you don’t see streaks of white paste in your hair.

The only downside is the sticky residue left on your hands after applying.

This stuff is the bomb! I have tried several hair putties on my very fine, VERY THIN hair. I always have a hard time with these types of products adding too much weight, too hard of a texture, or just feeling funky and gunky.

I picked up this item in the mailbox just 8 minutes after I was notified by text that it had arrived. It was very warm and completely melted. Once it reached room temperature, it turned to a hardened wax and was useless.

I sent a request to obtain a refund a week ago, but still no reply. They promised to reply within 48 hours. A good product, but not good delivery.

I was looking for a new taffy/putty product & thought I would give this one a try. It’s awesome! I have short, thick hair & the hold stays. It’s not sticky & washes off of hands easily. It does have a bit of a (bad) smell but it wears off.

It is different, changed, now terrible quality. Have used for about 10 years and prior last purchase was the Elvis edition and was the proper scent and consistency. Now smells like an old lady’s, 1970s, hand lotion; smells of alcohol and bandaids.

Also has the watery consistency of cheap Jergens hand lotion, used to be a thicker, just short of paste, cream, and had a very pleasant musky vanilla scent. Spoke directly with a company rep and they denied a change, even though, it is obvious and there are multiple strings online stating the quality is diminished.

WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN! Would select “0” stars if possible.

So I’ve tried AC in the past it was Fiber, didn’t like so I moved on to another brand. Jack Black Clay Pomade, and loved it, been using for 7+ years, well it became out of stock so I decided to try AC Matte Clay & so glad I did, easy to work with, great hold, long lasting, no shine in my short choppy blonde hair, washes out easily, and w/ a nice scent, plus it doesn’t leave white flakes.

Can’t beat the price compared to JB, I’ll be a AC customer for the foreseeable future. Ulta also was great with super fast shipping and in stock items, the wife told me to check them out that they carried men’s item too.

What I like about the matte clay is first off, I’m an older guy and my hair is not super thick. My hair is pretty tight on the sides and I like the front to sort of just stick straight up and back. the matte clay allows me to put a small bead into my damp hair and just pull it through and I usually pull it up.

I give it a few moments to settle in and then I use a wide tooth brush and easily style my hair. My hair just behaves with the matte clay. Once in place I usually hit if with a little hair spray to lock it in.

Lasts all day long. My hair has a slight shine but not much. I’ve used so many products and I’ve settled in in the matte clay.

I’m not sure what all the negative reviews are about. I really like this product. Don’t really notice much of a scent. It does have slightly more than a matte shine to it, which I like. Keeps my hair pliable all day but holds very well.

The only thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t come out of your hair or off your hands easy. Really do need to shampoo it to get it out. Otherwise I love the stuff more than other Axe products.

You don’t need to worry about messing your hair anymore. Seems you can get an even better messy look the longer the cream has time to set. This product makes it easy to style your hair messy while keeping the look very natural, and it lasts for days.

This is one of the best hair products I’ve bought. And I can confidently say that this is the best hair product you can find for the price. You only need to use a tiny amount, and it keeps its shape throughout the day.

After running it through my hair with my fingers just a couple times, it looks exactly how I want it to. It looks very natural, my hair isn’t glossy or firm at all. It smells pretty good, too. Not an overpowering odor but noticeable up close.

I find I hardly have to fix it up during the day. I would highly recommend. I’ve literally never wrote a review for any products, but I’ve had a really good experience. The only downfall with this product is the residue left on the hands after use could be changed overall the product is flawless!.

I love this product so much, it does exactly what I want it to do and makes my hair the most gorgeous it has ever looked. I put some on my hands and then just kind of pat my dry hair with it and scrunch it a little.

The application process feels weird but just patting it into my hair is enough to make the product work! It makes my natural curly messy hair look like the attractive version of my naturally curly messy hair.

The only thing I don’t like about this product is that I’m scared to use it. I read horrible reviews about the shampoo and conditioner and I’m worried this product could have the same effects on my hair a year from now.

I wish Deva Curl would put out a statement so we could at least know what is going on. Which products are defective and which are safe to use. This product is also new so if something is wrong with it like with the other products It scares me.

Right now I have a love/hate relationship with this product. I love that it doesn’t have a scent and that all it takes is a little bit to go a long way. I find that it hasn’t helped with frizzy sections hair, but it does add body and definition to my curls.

It can leave that “crunchy” feeling if you apply to thickly to some areas and feels heavy if you’re not careful with it. I think if someone who has more experience with kind of product used it, it would be spectacular.

Or even if matched with a guaranteed frizz-control product it would save me the messy crazy look I was left with. It’ll take some time and experimentation to figure out the best way to use this for my hair.

I bought this because Ayesha Malik uses it to refresh her curls and they always looked gorgeous! However, if you do not have perfect ringlets, I don’t think you’ll have much luck using this as a styling product.

I was disappointed at first, but I have since found a great way to use this!After initial styling and once my curls have dried, I like to take the TINIEST amount between my fingers and coat and lightly twist each curl.

It helps tame any loose strands and also makes the curls last way longer! It almost acts like a solid hairspray! Highly recommend for that use! Plus it is a large container and will last forever.
