I bought this Burpee Organic Potting Mix to use for new tomato seedling sprouts. I learned it was best to offer fresh nutrient filled soil for new tomatoes because they are heavy feeders. I also started these plants relatively late this year.
As soon as I re-potted my little spindly plants, they took off and are now looking much happier. So far so good, my little plants have grown healthy and are displaying many new blossoms as a signal of luscious fruits soon to follow.
This soil seems to hold water longer as advertised, so less is required. The only reason for 4 not 5 stars is, the soil was more expensive than I would normally buy at the local home center, although it is organic and seems to be high quality.
Looking forward to tasting what should be a beautiful and delicious harvest real soon.

3. Minute Soil – Compressed Coco Coir Fiber Grow Medium – 40 mm Wafers – Bag of 30 …
Minute soil is pure, untreated, raw fibrous coconut coir that is compressed into light convenient discs or blocks that quickly expand into an amazing grow medium when you add water. OMRI listed for organic production.
Minute soil has tremendous water retention capabilities that both save water and gives you added flexibility in watering frequency. The fibrous grow medium provides proper aeration to help plants and seedlings establish healthier roots to grow stronger and faster.
Grow directly in Minute soil, or add Minute soil to the dirt in your garden to improve water holding capacity and aeration. Great for indoor and outdoor container gardening, or traditional gardening.
Use for seed starts, potting soil, house plants, herbs, vegetables, flowers, microgreens, wheatgrass, turf and more. Minute soil is raw and unamended. Include your preference of fertilizer.
Good quality, hydrates fairly quickly leaving a few dry chunks to be broken down by hand and mixed in. It combined well with vermiculite and sand to make my seed-starting mix. Good price compared to other vendors.
Coir is a slightly better environmental choice than peat moss and is also pH neutral. It’s more expensive than peat moss, but it’s easy to work with, compact to store, and very lightweight before hydrating.
The minute soil compressed coconut pucks worked beautifully! They are just as good, if not better than regular dirt. They expanded way more than I expected and one soil compress was enough to grow a decent amount of a spicy salad mix of microgreens.
They did not have an unpleasant odor, just smelled like wet dirt. The selection of coconut based products was more than adequate to fit my needs. Overall, I am very pleased with the price range, performance of the product and happy with my purchase! Thanks True-Leaf Market! -Karen.
Roots Organics begins with a base of the highest quality coco fiber/coir on the planet which is repeatedly washed for an incredibly low EC, and composted for over twenty-four months, and is specially blended with extra long fibers.
This soil is amended with only the highest quality organic ingredients including bat guano, premium earth worm castings, fish bone meal, feather meal, green sand, mycorrihzae, glacial rock dust, soybean meal, humic acid, and many more.
Already blended with correct proportions of perlite and pumice for excellent drainage and a vigorous root system, Roots Organics potting soil encourages healthier plants and better yields. Comes in a heavy-duty, ready-to-grow, 1.
5 cu ft/10 gal, camouflage print bag; simply poke holes in the bottom, cut off the top, and plant.
Packed and balanced with nutrients and ph…Also jam packed with fungus gnats. Be careful, 2 of 5 bags I grabbed completely infested my entire enclosed area. A lot of work to take care of.
A powerful blend of Northwest sea-going fish, crab and shrimp meal, and earthworm castings create an ideal indoor/outdoor, container and greenhouse soil. Composted forest humus, peat moss, bat guano and micronutrients are added to create the optimum organic medium for a versatile planting environment.
It is light in texture and well aerated. Great to start seeds.
It’s expensive, but it’s clearly the best potting soil available. The cheap ones, such as from Home Depot have so much peat moss, they don’t absorb moisture readily. Drying out quickly, those other peat moss laden soils get very stiff, which chokes the roots that need room to grow.
Foxfarm has the perfect balance of moisture absorbency and drainage. It remains soft, so roots can easily stretch into new growth. Also unlike Miracle Grow potting soil, that has artificial fertilizers, plants won’t spike with growth, only to slump in fatigue from too much sudden stimulation.
With FoxFarm, they’ve got steady nutrients, so plants endure happily. I used to bring seaweed from the beach, dry it out and chop it up, because my plants love those minerals. FoxFarm saves me the work, because they’ve added the seaweed for me.
I feel like I just wrote an ad for the company, but I swear by this superior brand. Give it a try.

I tried Miracle-gro organic for the first time this year – big mistake! Fungus gnats everywhere!! So, I went back to my tried and true Epsoma. The plants are doing far better now despite this ongoing battle with gnats from the other soil.
Although there are some wood chips in it, the plants do not seem to mind. I just put any bigger chunks toward the bottom of the pot since it will break down eventually. Plus, it allows for better drainage doing it this way.
This is the only potting soil I will use in the future.
This season was our first time growing a garden. We grew almost everything from seed in our kitchen. We used this soil in all of our planting pods as well as in our garden when we transferred the plants.
Our garden is thriving!! This brand organic soil is my favorite and will be the only thing we use from here on out. I highly recommend this product.
Used this organic potting mix for my plants this last Spring. Its for all indoor and outdoor containers and potted plants. It contains a blend of natural ingredients including earthworm castings and Myco-tone.

SKU 65991293 – Start your plants on their way to a more beautiful state with the Miracle-Gro Seed Starting Potting Mix. The mix is enriched with Miracle-Gro Plant Food and is specially formulated for fast root development.
It is excellent when starting from seed or starting plants with leaf, stem, or root cuttings. Use it in containers, and get your plants growing faster with Miracle-Gro.
I used this product for the first time and I was excited because I also got a mini greenhouse. I thought that my plants would be amazing this year. Unfortunately, I too have mold growing in the soil and on my plants.
Some of my plants are even dying off. I’m super sad about this! I’m keeping the greenhouse open to allow more air to circulate and hoping they’ll get a second wind. I won’t water too much (I keep the soil moist since there’s a grow light in there too).
I don’t dislike the product because I think it’s my fault, but I’m really not sure – hence the 3 stars. I have some plants that are kicking butt, while others are dying off with moldy soil. It’s really bizarre.
I’ll buy new seeds and just plant them directly in the garden because I’m struggling with some of my plants. I’m still hoping they’ll recover, however. Although my experience hasn’t been awesome, I have seen some success with some of the plants.
DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU PLAN ON POURING BOILING WATER OVER IT, OR BAKING YOUR SOIL FIRST. I used this, indoors with our grow light to start all our seedlings this year. Started noticing a problem with small black ants not long after.
Finally discovered the source was in one of my seedling pots. There was an ENTIRE colony of ants living in my 5” pot that I filled with this soil. We had to toss all our seedlings and we’re now 4-5 weeks behind in our growing season because this soil was full of ant larva/eggs.
It all went in the compost, but I regret not saving t and sending it back as proof. I will be filing an official complaint with Miracle Gro and hope they take my complaint seriously.
Bar Harbor Blend is an organically approved, all-purpose, light-weight, potting soil. It is a rich, dark brown and full bodied, designed for re-potting house plants, planting hanging baskets, window boxes and all containers.
Bar Harbor Blend is made with lobster and aspen bark compost, long staple horticultural grade sphagnum peat moss and perlite. Like all compost-based soils, this too requires less watering. The compost gives it deep dark brown color as well as helping retain moisture.
I was very impressed by this soil. I normally mix topsoil with compost, potting soil, seaweed and various other ingredients to create my raised bed mix. Living on the rocky coast of Maine, I have to supply the soil if I want to grow anything.
I have looked at the ready-made versions at the big box stores, and they were rubbish. I purchased a few bags of this to top dress beds and was so happy that I just bought more. I can’t do any better and the cost was similar to buying all the ingredients separately.
Also, I just learned that Coast of Maine donates soil to school garden programs, including our own. Great product!.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Coast of Maine. I buy it a TON! I use the organic growers mix, water only, stonington blend. I would highly recommend it even more so CAN growers! It’s the way to go and so easy!
Your potted plants deserve the best. Their roots can’t seek out nutrients in the ground, so you have to bring it to them. That’s why Happy Frog Potting Soil is alive with beneficial microbes and fungi that help break down organic matter and feed the plant roots.
Between the earthworm castings, the bat guano, and the composted forest humus, your container plants have never felt so good. And don’t worry – FoxFarm uses only the highest quality, premium ingredients – no cheap fillers, no topsoil, no sludge.
Nutrient rich, Happy Frog Potting Soil is highly recommended for container gardens. Ready to use right out of the bag, and is pH adjusted to allow for maximum nutrient uptake. This unique mix is alive with beneficial soil microbes and mycorrhizal fungi that dramatically expand root development enabling plants to feed more aggressively.
The benefits of this premium select potting soil are strong plant structure, vigorous vegetative growth, with enhanced fruit and flower production. Enjoy the Fruits of Our Labor!.
This is the best potting soil locally available, as far as I know. Miracle Gro soils contain artificial chemical fertilizers, which are unbalanced for plants and soil. Milorganite is a travesty – using the sludge of human wastes collected from the Milwaukee water treatment plant as “organic fertilizer” deceptively leaving the buyer unaware that human feces also contain excreted heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, chemotherapy, parasites, etc.
, which is not what most people want on their food. Happy Frog also has the fungi that enable plant roots to take up nutrients. Just putting fish meal or kelp or worm castings or any other outstanding natural fertilizer on potted plants (which is needful, because the soil doesn’t have all of the microbes and worms, etc.
, that garden beds should if treated well), doesn’t automatically get the nutrients up into the plants. That takes the fungi. If you are growing vegetables and fruit organically in containers, this is the soil to use.
Happy Frog Potting Soil is my number one go to for most all my potting soil needs with the exception only to cacti/succulent potting medium. When unavailable at my local Farm and Fleet, I am known to drive to the nearest Farm and Fleet where product is available.
When using other standard potting soils, I must amend the mix with additional Pearlite, worm castings, horticulture charcoal, and peat moss to ensure good drainage, soil microbes, etc. Not only are these additional products costly, I have the mixing mess to clean up as well the extra time invested.
With Happy Frog, all I need to do is open the bag and start potting! All the amendments mentioned above are already perfectly blended into the soil as well additional beneficial ingredients. All I need to do is open the bag and start potting with total confidence that I am giving my expensive houseplants the best growing medium possible.
I recommend this product 100%. MJ On Thu, Apr 22, 2021 at 5:56 PM Blain’s Farm and Fleet wrote: Hi , Thank you for your recent purchase! Please write a review about your Happy Frog Potting Soil to let us know what you think.

First things first, for all of the reviews complaining about a moldy layer and some gnats resulting from this soil, keep in mind there is manure and compost in this mix. It is going to need to be turned and cared for.
Use a little Neem Oil and dawn dish detergent diluted in a bit of water and you should be fine with the gnats. I would not use this soil for inside plants because of the gnats, however. Great for the garden if you are willing to do the maintenance.
Higher quality soil needs a higher level of attention. We love this soil for our gardening. This brand is hard to find at times so load up on the 2 cu ft bags when you see them on sale for less than $35.

There once was a local (Idaho) company that made potting soil. It was inexpensive but of the very best quality I’ve ever worked with. This product reminds me of that soil less mix. I used it for just about everything.
I would start seeds in it, work them into larger containers, place it in the transplant holes to ease transplant shock, blend it into garden soil prior to direct seeding, use it as a mulch base for strawberries prior to spreading pine shavings.
the uses are very numerous indeed since I use no granulated fertilizers or sprays. Clover lawn clippings and the potting soil combined with crop rotation and cover crops are all the soil building I do! This will be my newest go to soil!.

The soil retains sufficient moisture to sustain active plant growth, even during periods of moderately dry weather.
Use the potting soil for vegetable plants, flowers, houseplants, or succulents. The potting soil helps encourage root health and growth in a variety of indoor or outdoor planters.
Well I just received my 40lb bag of soil, only it was 28lbs, old, dried out and basically just bad. I wouldn’t bother buying from this seller unless they assure you it hasn’t been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for months drying up.
Clearly there was 12lbs of moisture and nutrients that were missing because of whatever happened to the bag. That doesn’t happen over night or in transit.
Wow im so disappointed i have used this for years and now 2021 it is nothing more then mulch. What happened? This used to be the best i always recommended now its a waste of money. Its more expensive but way less quality wish i would have known before i bought my yearly supply.
The best potting soil I have ever purchased. I love putting my hands in this dark, rich soil. Some potting soils contain large wood chips and even rocks. You’re not going to find those types of fillers in this product.
Highly recommended. I have reordered multiple bags. It’s worth the price to get a fine quality product.

Best Potting Mix For Container Gardening Buying Guides
Why is potting mix important for container gardening?
When growing plants in containers, it is important to use a good quality potting mix. This will help to ensure that your plants get the nutrients they need and that the roots are able to breathe. A good potting mix will also help to prevent waterlogging and make sure that your plants do not dry out.
What are the ingredients of potting mix?
The ingredients of a mix of potting mix for container gardening are:
1 part peat moss
1 part perlite
1 part vermiculite
Peat moss is a Sphagnum moss that is used as a soil amendment. It is used to increase the organic matter in the soil and to improve drainage. Perlite is a volcanic glass that is used to improve drainage and aeration in the soil.
Vermiculite is a mineral that is used to improve drainage and aeration in the soil.
How to make your own potting mix?
To make your own mix of potting mix for container gardening, you will need the following ingredients: 1 part perlite, 1 part vermiculite, 1 part sphagnum peat moss, and 1 part compost. Mix these ingredients together thoroughly and then moisten the mix with water until it is evenly damp.
What are the benefits of using potting mix?
There are several benefits to using a mix of potting mix for container gardening. First, it helps to improve drainage and aeration in the soil, which is important for plant health. Second, it can help to reduce the amount of water needed for watering by retaining moisture in the soil.
Third, it can help to improve the fertility of the soil by providing nutrients that plants need to grow. Finally, it can help to improve the appearance of the container garden by providing a more uniform growth of plants.
How to choose the right potting mix for your plants?
The type of potting mix you use for container gardening will depend on the types of plants you are growing. For example, if you are growing plants that require a lot of water, you will need to use a potting mix that drains well and does not hold onto water.
If you are growing plants that require little water, you will need to use a potting mix that retains water well. You will also need to consider the type of container you are using. For example, if you are using a plastic container, you will need to use a potting mix that is made for plastic containers.
When to repot your plants?
The best time to repot your plants is in the spring, after the last frost. You will need to replace the potting mix every year, or every other year if you are using a slow-release fertilizer.
How to care for your plants?
To keep your plants healthy in a potting mix for container gardening, water them regularly and fertilize them monthly. Also, make sure the pots have drainage holes to prevent the roots from getting waterlogged.
Conclusion
The ideal potting mix for container gardening is one that is lightweight, well-draining, and rich in nutrients. A good potting mix should also be able to hold moisture without becoming waterlogged. Some gardeners prefer to make their own potting mix, while others prefer to purchase a premixed potting mix from a garden center.
