20 Best Non Contact Dc Voltage Tester (2023 Updated)

Not only was this a good price but it was incredibly easy to use. My husband was away and I had power stop to an entire room in our house. It was simple enough to find the affected plug and then change it out to a new one which restored power to the room.

I felt safe and confident using these 2 tools.

Nice improvement on an already great tool! Have carried one in my pocket for years an hvac/mechanical contractor. This tool and a pocket screwdriver can narrow down an electrical problem in a minute.

I’ve owned quite a few of these and they are my go to when checking if the power is off. I have yet to have an issue with it reading incorrectly saving me from some bad shocks. Unfortunately I can’t say how long they last as I tend to lose mine or a coworker “accidentally” takes it and I never see it again.

I can say I’ve had one for about 2 years with no issues before it was misplaced so it is well worth the price.

Had this tester for a few years, used it about 40 -50 times, then all of a sudden stopped performing properly, indicating hot wire from 1ft away, then stopped turning on entirely. Trying to see if something is damaged or if battery corroded but no just randomly died.

Probably the most important safty device i own. now i cannot determine if a wire is hot or not aka cant do any work until i replace it.

I’ve had it for three or four months now and I’m considering buying a second one. It’s the most accurate tic tracer I’ve owned sensitivitie but not overly. The light is large enough it actually comes in handy some times.

I purchased this almost two years ago and have no issues whatsoever! Many of my co-workers have seen the quality of the Southwire products and most of them have tossed out their generic brands tools to go with a well-made and dependable product!!!.

I can’t write a totally in-depth review because I have only tested it since receiving it, but. I really like the way this unit works. There are separate buttons for the LED light and the voltage ranges, so you can choose a range and use it with or without the light.

It is simple to use and I was able to easily trace a couple wires inside the wall. It is a good size to fit your hand, and has a sturdy pocket clip. I especially love the easy change battery. No flimsy battery door and little screw to lose.

Just unscrew the large cap at the top and swap the batteries. I really like this voltage tester and would definitely buy it again.

Junk. Would give it 0 stars. No single beep when turning on. Audible beep on detection did not work. Only double beep when power off. Red light did indicate presence of volts, but if one feature isn’t working properly, you can’t really trust the other one.

Returned same day.

Just what I need while doing small electrical jobs around the house. It works perfectly and as expected. It alerts you of an electrical current. Thanks to its compact size I’m able to clip into on my shirt pocket and have it handy when needed.

I purchased this E bike after looking on the internet for a month. It is the most comfortable bike I have ever owned. I have arthritis and the handle bars are so comfortable and the pedal assist is very smooth.

I can ride everywhere on this bike without my legs or back getting sore. The 7 gears shift smoothly and I am able to squeeze the brakes. The bike has a throttle that works well when you don’t feel like pedaling.

The bike is a little heavy And the kickstand if not put on level surface the bike could fall over, but all e bikes are heavy. I really love the bike and recommend it to any body especially older people and people with disabilities.

Not a very good electrician but I needed to replace a kitchen switch. Bought this little gem and it was perfect! The small flashlight was a big help too. Excellent value and will be in my toolkit for a long time!.

As a licensed electrician, I have owned probably three or four different types and brands of non-contact testers. They all work but the Southwest version is by FAR the best one. It’s simple and LOUD.

There are a couple out there, like the Klein version that is barely audible and the multi-function version with one button are a pain as they ratchet between functions (low voltage – high voltage) and the switching between the two isn’t as positive as it could be.

AND the added small flashlight on the other end is magnificently handy.

This is the only non-contact voltage tester I trust. The sensitivity level is perfect. It can easily identify the hot conductor in a table lamp zip cord. Never have “false positives” or “false negatives.

” With the constant bright red flashing light, you never have to wonder if it is turned ON and working. If you forget to turn it off, it will save batteries by turning itself off after several minutes of non use.

The large push button switch on the end of the tool makes it easy to use with one hand.

Some of the features I think were well thought out: You have the option of audible and visual, or just visual feedback. It has power saving auto shut off feature, but it is not an annoyingly short interval on.

Resulting battery life is very good. It is sensitive enough to differentiate between hot and neutral in a cord. Having tried a few others, this one seems the most reliable.

It feels well made, and is easy to use. The end lights up and it beeps. My only issue while testing it was that on sone exposed surface run electrical lighting cables, it did not detect the current. However, as I moved it over the lightswitch, it then beeped.

It worked on the 13A socket wiring ok though. It’s not as good as my old Fluke one, but I guess you get what you pay for.

I found that when I ran the product along a live cable, it would respond and indicate that it was live at one point, but two or three inches away from that point it might not. I tried it in more than one location with the same effect.

Thus, I have concluded it is of indicative benefit rather than definitive and will use with great caution. In other words, if it indicates that something is live, it will be, but if it indicates that it is dead, it might not be.

Much better than the base model as this one has both visual and audible indication of live voltage. Too early to say if the quality will lead to longevity of the product but it seems to be of a high quality.

A bit pricey when compared to equivalent voltage detectors. Personally I think some knowledge of mains electricity and what the tester is actually for and what the testing result means if one is to get the best out of it.

As an electrician I have owned so many different makes and models of these. This one is the best for a few reasons: 1. ) different colour upon voltage 2. ) loud audio upon voltage 3. ) flashlight is a nice touch….

Great for snooping around in boxes. Any tool that is a double tool is great as it saves the weight from my pouch. 4. ) dual range of voltage means you can test circuits and be sure you’re not just picking up nominal voltage.

But #5…. #5 is where it hits home. It’s WATERPROOF. That is why it’s the best. The reason I’ve been through so many of these is I keep leaving them in my darn pocket and then washing them. Well ladies and gentlemen, after owning it for 5 days only I just accidentally washed my tester AND IT STILL WORKS!!!! Please, Klein, take all my money.

Bought this and loved it for a year. Dropped it 1. 5 ft on concrete floor and hard plastic battery cap broke – now useless. Searched site, could not find replacement parts. Battery cap under high stress due to spring and battery weight underneath.

Poor selection of material used in battery cap. Should be thicker hard plastic or more flexible material.

Electrician for 18 years. I’ve mostly used the Fluke non contacts because that’s what I’ve always used, but the tail cap seems to get loose and fail pretty quickly if it’s carried clipped to a shirt pocket.

I’ve had this tester for about 6 months and I have no complaints. It’s a non-contact voltage tester. It’s not a life changing tool, but the obvious strength of this tail cap makes it seem like it will last longer than it’s competitors.

Awful tester. Nothing about this thing works. This is for a DIYer not professionals. First thing that broke was the clip. Now it won’t even stay on. Bring back the NCVT-3 and get rid of this garbage.

I used another leading brand of voltage detector for years, however after recently changing to wiha, I wouldn’t change back. It comes with a good range and an indicator that gives you a sense of how close you are to the live conductor, because of this I am able to tell what side of a twin and earth is the live conductor.

This volt detector also includes a torch which is surprisingly decent for an extra feature. Overall, the product seems to be great quality and very self explanatory to use. Only negative I have is it is slightly pricier then other brands, however I believe you get your money worth with this product! Always remember, buy cheap, buy twice!!!.

This product has a nice feel and is well made. Simply turn on and use, I like the range that it goes through. I think that Wiha’s price for this is about right.

Best voltage detection tool I’ve used, light is really bright for such a small device, indication colours are good, only fault I’ve found is sometimes the pen doesn’t come on when I switch it on, like the battery is dead even with new ones in.

A strange operating system, but reliable. The continuous flashing when switched on and not in use (it has an auto timeout on this feature) is a bit disconcerting. However it becomes a steady light with a bleep when identifying a live power source.

Previous other brands I have used only light up the ‘pen’ tip when sensing live power. Fine once you realise how the ‘Fluke’ works- and it appears not to give false indications.

I have tried many voltage detection tools over the 18 years of my career as an electrician (residential, industrial, commercial, maintenance), but Fluke makes the most accurate and durable one that I’ve ever used and I’ll be sticking with it, since I bought my first one (earlier Fluke model) about 15 years ago.

Many others are too sensitive and will light up as soon as it’s inside of a junction box of live wires. With the Fluke 1AC, one can identify each live source with no problem; of course as voltage goes up, sensitivity does as well, but so it goes with any such tool.

Some people complain about the tips breaking, but this has not been my experience, as I’ve dropped mine several times from about 3 feet, which has broken every other brand that I’ve bought. Being able to use the tool without the sound is great, as one can go about troubleshooting without distracting those who are around.

The light flashes in intervals when not near a live source to let you that it’s working, which is quite handy; however, always test on a known live source first. This IS NOT A LIFE SAFETY TOOL, this is a great TROUBLESHOOTING TOOL.

If you are looking to save time and be more efficient before using your meter, I would recommend the Fluke 1AC to do so. Just avoid hard impacts and change the batteries regularly and you’ll have this tool for quite some time.

It’s really nice to have a device that can quickly help you find energized circuits in attics, switch boxes, etc. Compact (pocket-size), lightweight, and easy to use. One caveat, be sure to purchase the model with the voltage range appropriate for the job.

There are three ranges available. If you get one that’s too sensitive, you can expect false positives. More worrisome, if you use the 200-1000 volt model on household current, it may not trigger on an energized circuit.

Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding testing the unit before and after use.

I bought it from Canadian tire on sale, and should have returned. The main problem with this detector is it senses electrical voltage field from a distance. That makes it useless, say if you have plug point two two or three hole, and like to check which one has power, you will not need to put the tip in the hole, it will start beeping if you are near.

So, it’s not possible to identify which point is hot. In most electrical box there are multiple circuit and if any one has power then it will beep.

I received this as a gift, and I love it. If this thing registers a current, I keep turning off breakers until it tells me it’s safe to work. I’d rather err on the side of caution with this tool and turn off more breakers than necessary, so I love this tool.

It’s an essential part of my electrical tool box and I thank my friend every time I do any electrical work on my house. This inexpensive tool is great.

This GB non-contact voltage tester is great. This is my second one. My grown Son ended up snitching my first one. I have owned other brands but they turned out to be unreliable in detecting low voltage especially.

I don’t remember the brand of the one I had which registered that the circuit dead but. the circuit was not dead. Any person with a fair amount of electrical work experience KNOWS to always treat the wiring like it is hot until you ground it yourself.

I burned a hole in the junction box. I threw that one out right then. This GB GVD-3504 tester has proven reliable and it fits great in my tool belt or even in my shirt pocket.

I use my FlirVP50; often in my troubleshooting. Having to deal with low voltage often , It is nice to know In don’t have to pull out my heavy duty tester to check for voltage. Excellent for troubleshooting thermostat wires.

I have many other FLIR products and some of their IR cameras. I appreciate the light on the end of this unit, it is bright and works well especially in tight areas. The High setting is VERY sensitive, often picking up stray voltage a foot away, so I find I don’t use it often.

It seems durable and comes with a lifetime warranty from FLIR, can’t go wrong with the price.

This is the second Sperry Voltage Sensor I’ve had – both excellent products. I may nor have bought the second one only my first took a trip down 25 floors into a lift well and went to that “Voltage Sensor Heaven in the Sky”.

The only issue I have with this new one is it uses a AAA battery and that is easily knocked off its contact!.

This item is easy to use with adjusting dial to prevent false positive readings. I use it daily and rely on it to prevent accidental touching of live circuits.

The detector allowed me to identify a faulty fuse that didn’t appear to be blown from visual inspection. Very handy.

It has been a reliable and accurate means of detecting energized and de energized circuits keeping you safe. Detects low and high voltages 12-1000V. Both audible and visual alerts. Great sensitivity to determine energized components from de energized circuits even in close proximity to one another.

Infrared thermometer allows you to point and shoot to gather a quick temperature reading at less than 1/3 the size of a regular temperature laser gun. Many other features include back lit display, water and dust resistance, and auto off to save battery.

Klein Tools has provided me with free product and additional incentives to provide an honest review of this product So I’ve been using this new Klein NCVT-4IR for about a month now and it’s pretty neat.

Not only is it a non-contact voltage tester, but it’s also an infrared thermometer. And if you want to get technical, it’s also a laser pointer. I looked into getting an IR thermometer a few years back and it was a couple of hundred bucks.

These are around 40 bucks. So far it’s worked fine. Obviously it doesn’t take the place of a meter, but to get a quick check of voltage on a wire or outlet, it has done its job well. I’ve even used it as a laser pointer once or twice.

I can also say that I gave it the hardest test of all. I accidentally dropped it on to a hard quarry tile floor from a ladder at about 5 feet. It bounced twice, I had that sinking feeling in my stomach when it hit.

I picked it up and it worked fine. #kleintools #kleincrusaders.

Bought this when I was updating the supply panel and wire runs in the loft. I also wanted the thermometer to spot insulation problems in the roof. With the project completed, I use the none contact thermometer for precise control over temperatures during cooking and frying! It prevents oils burning resulting in less smoke, less smells, less greasy, and more flavorful foods – honest!.

This tester worked well for testing AC voltages from 24V (doorbell) to 120V (wall outlet). (and probably beyond, but I didn’t have any sources to test outside that range. ) The best part is the variable sensitivity, which allows you not only to adjust for voltage, but for how sensitive you want it to be for the same voltage.

Need a bigger arrow or preferably a contrasting color. Also could use some registration marks around the dial (don’t have to be labeled or numbered) to allow repeatable selection of the same sensitivity.

I addressed this by using a silver marker on the arrow and to make tick marks at a couple of levels.

This is a great easy to use tool when troubleshooting electrical AC circuits. The adjustable rheostat is a must because you can tweak the sensitivity depending on the voltage, equipment or location your testing.

For example when checking standard 120 volt receptacle outlets, you can adjust it to only light up/beep when you check the “hot” ungrounded conductor side but when you move it to the “neutral” grounded conductor side it remains off.

Also if you’re trying to trace out a “hot” or switched conductor in an electrical box with other energized conductors in close proximity, you can adjust the sensitivity way down to light/beep only on the circuit you’re working.

A non-adjustable unit normally alarms due to the EMF given off by the other conductors, so discriminating which wire is actually energized is difficult at best. The only draw back is the rotating adjustable rheostat knob is easily moved if stored in your tool bag or pouch, requiring you to reset it every time.

However I found if you adjust it to your needs then place small white marks on the rheostat and the body of the tester, this will save you some time by not having to readjust it. Just line up the two white marks and you’re ready to go.

Stay away from the non-adjustable ones because the sensitivity is prefixed for better or for worst.

Bought 2, 1 works, 1 DOA. This is why I took off a star. Got the replacement. Both now apeared to work as expected. Feel nice in the hand and the quality is great. The sensitive dial is too small and therefore hard to use if you have large fingers.

Will have to wait and see if they hold up for home use.

The product is easy to use and seems accurate enough. It helped me determine dwell and rpm in my 1967 Ford Galaxie with a 289 engine. It is well built, the components are sturdy and well insulated. The display is quite large and easy to read, even in bright sunlight.

It comes with the battery.

This is my second multimeter from Orielly’s The first was purchased several years ago, definitely got my money out of it. It does the job well for small electrical testing, batteries, alternators, interior trouble shooting.

Works great. In addition to the DC voltage scales I was looking to measure low AC voltage and was pleasantry surprised to get readings like 4 AC volts.

I like this test light for the polarity indicator mostly. if you ever take out bulb, make sure it goes in the same direction or itll only light red for power. It’s safe on ECUs. the only complaint I have is the cord isnt very long, but I just found some wire that was nice and pliable and made a 5-6′ lead instead of the existing one which isnt that long.

Also put a new alligator clip on when I did this, one that’ll grab battery terminals better. I had thought about making a modular lead w/ some female 4mm banana plug adapters and soldering that on so I could use my Fluke modular accessories (backprobes, different sizes alligator clips, etc).

Maybe when I get bored. The point is, you can kinda do whatever you want to this tool and still have a cheap, comfortable test light that’s computer safe w/ polarity for cheap. If you want a 10′ lead, itll probably work.

It’s nice to modify test lights to fit my specific needs, I dont find it necessary to buy an expensive test light when I can make one. When I wanted a Load Pro dynamic test lead set, i just made one with an old test light, two 50ohm resistors in parallel (25ohm) and a little momentary NC switch.

I think mine was more durable than the original.

Already had one of these for years and it saved so much time. I expect the same from this one. They are a basic 12v circuit checker, mainly used to make sure juice is getting to your test point. It’s simple, cheap price, and a great asset to the tool box.
