20 Best Low G Tenor Ukulele Strings (2023 Updated)

Excellent sound! Would recommend these string to anyone with a quality ukulele. Though I did not like the tone of the low G string, I replaced it with a wound G string from a local source. Much better tone and sound projection that the NylGut from Aquila.

Seems like the NylGut strings make all ukes sound very similar. Though I have not tried these carbon strings on a lower quality instrument, on a mid-priced Cordoba tenor they sound fantastical!.

I think these are quality strings. They offer a bright tone and are quite durable. They are smooth to the touch offering comfortable playability. The length of the strings is more than enough, so they can be easily installed with room to spare.

I find that makes string changes easier. Ukulele strings are very much about personal preference. I would definitely recommend trying these to see if they might work for your instrument(s).

Less bright (harsh) than titanium series, but brighter than nylon so good for picking. Fatter titanium strings seem a little “muddier”. Hard to explain. Noticed A string knot tends to slip over time so wind an extra wrap at saddle.

I purchased a Kohala KP-T (which is a tenor) from MF, for my niece recently. She does not know it yet. Surprise gift. I’m a fantastic uncle. After receiving it, I did not like the strings at all. I have 6 ukuleles myself and they are all high quality and came with Aquila NylGut strings which I have never had to replace.

I am very familiar with the tone of good strings on ukuleles. The Kohala. nice inexpensive uke, but the strings had to go. Only the higher quality ukuleles come with Aquila strings. I purchased these and strung it up.

While at it, I sanded down the saddle a touch and what a difference! I am considering not giving it as a surprise gift now. MINE! Okay, I don’t need another ukulele. bad uncle! This was the first time I ever strung up an ukulele.

Totally easy. I found a string tying video on YouTube and watched it once. Cake. These strings take a while to stretch out but so do all nylon strings. Once they are on and stretched out, you’ll be happy you made the switch.

These strings are bright yet nicely full bodied. They respond with the slightest touch and can handle a beating as well. Nice job D’Addario and Aquila. I’ll be back when I need to replace my strings again.

My niece won’t even know how good she has it, but I know the difference. Pick up a set. You’ll be glad you did even though they are not glow-in-the-dark (not that they are supposed to be but I just can’t find glow-in-the-dark uke strings).

I put these on whilst fixing up a ukulele custom. These strings have been released and tightened like 30 times now and still going. sure its wearing a bit around machine heads but soundwise not affected much.

But I’ll put the new set on once work is done. Has nice sustain. think I’d rather put on soprano and not my tenkr since it gives a very bass sound so my tenor doesnt have that traditional twangy sound.

but sounds pretty good.

Not used them yet but seem ideal- a little information on attaching and tuning would help as these are not standard ukulele

I have been trying different strings on my Enya Nova ukulele, in an effort to improve the sound. To me it sounds like a plastic box, which I suppose is what it is. Having read a passing comment on Aquila Reds I thought I’d give them a go and also decided to put a low G on too.

They are a little intimidating as you have be put them on very carefully (you are recommended to watch a video before fitting) because they are prone to snapping. However I managed to fit them without mishap and the improvement is massive.

Part of this is no doubt because of the Low G, but I am impressed overall and they look good too, as it’s red strings on a black ukulele. I shall be keeping these strings on ukulele and will no doubt try them on one of the others in the future.

I just recently strung this up to a Fender Grace Vanderwaal Concert uke. I was waiting for a wound Aquila low G to come in, and I had purchased one of these red ones by mistake (was looking for a soprano red low g) so I figured I’d give it a try.

Okay, there are good, bad and ugly when it comes to the Aquila red low-G, so I’ll lay them out on the table. Good: I was amazed when I actually first handled the string, it weighs as much as a nickle wound string, but, it’s nylon.

It seems Aquila improved the formulation for these red strings, as it has been very durable. It didn’t break on me like so many others have described. Sounds pretty good too, but there’s some caveats to that.

Bad: First off, as to the tone of these strings; they have a nice warm tone, but, the tone is somewhat muted when compared to even standard Nylgut strings. The reds should therefore, only be used as a set.

This string shouldn’t be mixed with others, except in certain situations where you would need a low g with a warm, subtle tone. The reds also have a texture like very fine sandpaper. It doesn’t bother me much, but I could see like some folks wouldn’t like it.

It doesn’t hurt or tear up the fingers though, or the frets (that I could tell) Ugly: Hoo boy, here we go with what I hate about these; Theystretch like crazy! It’s taken a week for it to settle in, but I’m still adjusting the tuning peg every time I pull the uke out of it’s case.

This string is not quite like a rubber band, but it’s still way too stretchy, even normal nylgut will settle in after a day or two if you pre-stretch when stringing, these red ones require a lot more patience in this regard.

They also seem fatter than other strings by a hair, so they will sit higher action-wise, not enough to affect your playing, but it’s noticable; This diminishes as the string stretches, but some (like myself) don’t have the patience for this.

They’re worth trying, and they aren’t bad, but they aren’t my favorite. To conclude: These things stretch like mad, should only be used in a full set of reds for the best sound, and Aquila should keep working on this formulation; Perhaps with some tweaks from the factory, they would be a much better string.

But they’re red, so there’s that going for them!.

I’m convinced Aquila Red Series strings are arguably the best ukulele strings available. They are durable, with well thought out string sizings. They consistently produce rich depth, sustain and tone in both the treble and bass ranges, and they are tenacious in holding tune.

I’ve used them on sopranos, tenors, 6 string tenors, and baritones, and now on a vintage concert – I’ve yet to be disappointed. They are a pleasure to play. As we have all learned by now, you get what you pay for, and in my judgment the 3 or 4 extra dollars per set that you’ll pay for Reds is worth every single penny.

Top of the line product.

Reasons to use low G ukulele string sets. 1) The Bruddah Iz version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow demands those octave lower bass notes on the G string. Same could be said for most any song! 2) For converts from guitar to ukulele, the low G string gives them the same exact intervals they’re accustomed to on the guitar strings D and G which translate to G and C on the ukulele.

Any riffs or bass lines they’ve been playing on guitar strings D and G will have the same tonal movement on strings G and C on the ukulele. It makes learning the ukulele much easier. Aquila is the only brand I know of that sells low G sets.

These sets should be sold in the stores and the sales staff should let the customers know why. They should have at least one ukulele in the store that is strung with the low G so they could demonstrate it to their customers.

They would sell more ukuleles!!!.

The string comprise 3 standard nylgut strings with a spiral bound Low G. It took awhile getting used to the new setup as Id never used a low G before. I didnt need to enlarge the nut as this string is no wider.

Im glad I changed the strings and I would encourage anyone to have a go. The strings take a while to stretch and settle down. Have a go!!.

Put these on as a replacement to the stock strings that came on my Cordoba tenor ukulele, what a massive improvement. I wish that someone had told me about the ‘Low G’ string sets a long time ago! These bring a whole new life and tonality to my uke, it is much more usable now for all kinds of music.

Love these stings, and the tone is full and beautiful too, much more so than I would have ever expected from a ukulele.

In my opinion the earlier Aquila New Nylgut Strings are a good option that many people love, but I normally prefer not to use them. The later Aquila Super Nylgut stings are a step forward from the older strings and I like them – I tried them by chance and then fitted them to a second Uke, very pleased.

The Super Nylguts sound good to me, they intonate well, they are easy on the fingers and they are loud enough. Aquilas do seem to last a long time and the white is easier to see than clear strings too – which might matter to you.

Price can be variable and do make sure that you buy genuine packaged strings rather than knock-off copies (cause the copies dont work). Just four out of five stars? OK, there are better strings about but its really hard to both know what they are and (importantly!) whether theyll work really well (five stars worth) on your particular instrument.

In contrast Aquilas work well on pretty much any instrument, especially Ukes made from laminated wood. Im hard to please but find that the Super Nylguts are a solid, reliable and no fuss choice for whatever you play.

These strings add both brightness and warmth to my ukulele. I needed strings that added brightness because my ukulele’s tone wood diminished the high end. Fluorocarbon strings couldn’t help improve the high end.

but these Sugar strings did the job! They are bioplastic made from sugar cane! They also allow you to more easily produce vibrato. Nice! [My Luna Concert Uke is made from Ziricote laminate].

At first I was a bit disappointed that the Low G string is wound, I expected unwound as it wasn’t mentioned in the description. After stringing I found the string too loud and booming and was overpowering the other strings.

However after a day the strings settled and now my Tenor Ukelele sounds lovely, deep and warm sounding.

I bought a really cheap baritone ukulele off amazon and put these stings on it and it really makes it sound very nice and the black does look super sleek and pretty, I did think that it was the low gcea tuning, but that was my mistake for not reading it more carefully.

shipping was fast and good! 10/10 would recommend! I will be buying this same brand in low g, too bad they don’t have the low g in the black strings!.

Looks like the gray wool from Minecraft. Sounds very full and cute. Not a fan of the coil string so I replaced it with a different Nylgut string. But other than that, great buy.

Aquila Lava Series have a smooth feel and a sweet tone. They are made in Italy and even look better than my old strings!

I play a baritone ukulele and had strung it GCEA to conform with the smaller ukes. However the tension on the A string was huge and it kept breaking, so I decided to go back to DGBE tuning. The difference using the new strings was amazing, stays in tune right up the neck, easier to bend, lovely mellow tone [ for a uke ] i am really pleased with these Aquila nylgut strings colin.

The low wounded G-string keeps on resonating while toggling on the next strings. It gives the ukulele a nice bass and a more complete sound. It enables ladderlike strum patterns for instance with “Everybody hurts ” from REM.

The other strings tune nicely with the low G and have a soft sound.

Just got them, never used them before. Unable to rate quality due to playing them in. Bit on the expensive side but not to much choice out there for this particular tuning that I wanted

I didn’t know you could tune a Tenner Ukulele with a low G before seeing it on youtube so I thought I would give it a go. I thought it sounded quight low and with a long sustain. I think it would be great with some tunes but because I dont change the fret much on that string and I pick them as well as strum it began to sound a bit drone like but maybe thats the way I play.

When playing the “C” chord the G string is open. When playing the “G” chord or the “G7” the G string is open and the “F” chord is only one fret down. It certainly makes a difference and well worth trying especially if you have an extra tenner ukulele.

and you can then swap ukulele’s for different tunes. I was a bit supprised that it is a wire bound string and not a Nylon one.

This low G looks and feels exactly like the Aquila wound low G that I also love. I think I read somewhere that Aquila makes some strings for D’Addario. anyway this string feels and sounds great to me.

Its a thinner wound G than others, if that is something you like.

I am using these on my Mitchell Baritone uke. I love the sound. The low G takes the “toy” sound out of the uke and gives it a more serious sound. But I had trouble with the A string snapping. Even days later the thing would just pop down at the bridge just above the knot.

I put a set of EJ99TLG Low G strings on my Alvarez tenor uke. I love the sound of these strings, too but have had the same problem with the A string.

The advert for these strings say that they can help with intonation. I fitted them to a cheap Vintage made concert uke fitted with black strings, and the difference is amazing. This uke was out of tune from day one but is now ( to my ear ) perfect.

I also bought a set for my soprano uke but noticed the bridge was tipping and top top was bowing in, (left stored during lock down on my damp cabin cruiser) so I did not fit them. I will definitely hold onto them for when I get a new soprano uke, and replace the strings if the uke is not in good tune.

Definitely recommend them.

This is a very specialist item. Banjo players will be familiar with metal strings, but some may not have tried non-metal, however these are only suitable for particular banjos – mainly the ‘old time’ or ‘classic(al)’ types.

That being said, these have transformed the sound of my 100+ year-old Clifford Essex open back banjo which now produces a very mellow, haunting sound without the high jangly overtones. If that is what you are looking for, give these a try.

Fitting is not as straightforward as off-the-peg loop end metal strings. There are no ready made loops but I found that classical guitar style whipping knots work fine. Also being non-metallic, these strings take a while to stretch and stay in key, but that is just a natural feature of the material.

All in all I really like the final result and tonality, but this is very much a personal preference.

I normally where size 10 in European/Italian brands, and the sizing chart from Nordstrom was off. It recommended that I purchase a size 41 (if size 10), and it was way too big. Should have purchased the size 40 like I normally do.

Very nice quality for the price.

The strings were easy to install, but its the tone and comfort of the strings that stand out to me. I had standard nylon before; these are on another level, way above it. They’re smooth, making for quick action without noise or resistance, and the more I play since changing the strings, the longer it seems to hold a tune.

I’m very impressed! They came super quick ~ less than a week. I’m definitely ordering again!.

I always use Aquila strings on all my ukuleles, they are, by far the best strings on the market, and the price is very reasonable. There never appears to be any wear on these stings, they just keep on playing so well.

Angle of display setting is highly customizable. I also like the fact that it stands securely on my desk and is very stable. Neat design. Very pleased with it.

Good points: Great sound. The sound has no harsh aspects, rather, is an even The (minimally) bad: The strings were just the right length, but no excess. I would have liked another cm or two for a margin of error.

Also, it seems to be taking several days for them to quite stretching over time. Initial string stretching goes on for days. I am new to ukuleles and their strings, so as far as I know, this is to be expected.

Finally, the C string in the green pack was of a larger diameter than the one in the E string blue pack. I switched them and installed according to string diameter. Any perceived flaws pale in comparison to the enjoyment of the excellent sound though.

These strings are so good. I put them on mu uke and I could hear the difference in tone and volume right away. They are easier on the fingertips too.

Stretches in easily and great tone. Perfect contrast to the bright body for bell like tones.

I’m a professional musician who has been playing ukulele for 23 years. I got on the band wagon before it was a band wagon. Finding quality strings has always been a gamble. Stores seem to carry a limited selection at best, if at all.

While I am not as fond of these on a soprano or concert scale ukes. when I tried these on a tenor uke, I was pleasantly surprised. Now Aquila Nylgut Low G sets are one of my go to choices. Not having to order them on line saves on shipping AND I get to check out other gear while in the store.

I was so glad that Aquila developed strings that allow me to tune my guilele like a standard guitar. What I noticed once I got them on. The bass strings (particularly 6) remain at lower tension. This means I cannot strike those strings with as much force or I get fret buzz.

I thought maybe I had just tuned the 6th string an octave too low, but when I tried to tighten it up, I busted the string (it broken at a place that gave me just enough length to string it back up). Because of this lower tension, the instrument doesn’t project as much as it does with the standard A strings (even when those are tuned down to G).

With these Red E strings, the guilele is nice to strum quietly at home without a pick. Right now, this is my night-time instrument for when I feel like playing late. It does well with a felt ukelele pick or lightly strummed with fingers.

I would highly recommend giving these strings a go. I personally love theyre clear mellow tone. Ive got a low G set on my forest tenor and have just purchased a high G set for my electro cordoba. You also get enough to restring your uke twice.

I sent an email to worth strings asking about what strings could be used to retune a baritone Uke to produce Gcea tuning and the reply said to use their standard baritone set and just tune up, e to a, b to e etc.

So I ordered and fitted them and did that. Really nice voicing and no sense or feline of over-taughtness. Not tried retuning back down to DGBE but I wonder if that might now produce a too slack feel and hence thuddy/muddy sounds now.

I like these strings and use their low G string with other brands of string as well with good results. Whatever you need worth has a string set ( apparently ) for that. Might have to try their set for eight string tenor and see if it tames the beast a little.

I’m not a fan of the wound low g string, which is how any other string company seems to handle low g. Doesn’t last, sound is uneven, in my opinion. The Worth strings have great sound, and they last! The low g string is also flurocarbon, just like the rest, so there is sound consistency, as well.

And, for most ukes, you get double length, so you get two sets of strings in each envelope. I’m a fan. I like the clear ones better than brown because they are brighter, less muted. But, that’s a matter of the individual’s taste in sound.

These strings have a lot going for them. They have a nice soft and glossy feel with a light medium tension that makes them easy to fret all over the neck. Their gauge is a little thicker than fluorocarbon which also makes the fret play easy and comfortable.

The black color of the strings also looks good and is a nice compliment to many wood finishes. When I add in their wonderful sound these become a highly recommended string. I almost would rather keep it a secret.

They sound clear, bright, warm with a vintage tone and give plenty of volume. String 3 has plenty of sustain, thats something I dont find in other brands. These are definitely a go to set of strings.

Took a long time to stretch in but for the most part its to be expected. Requires tuning pretty much when ever it idles for awhile, but keeps good tune during play. The look awesome! Slightly tinny for my taste but project rather well.

If your ukulele is darker sounding and you want to brighten the sound, these will do just that. I use GHS bass strings and have always been happy with their products.

Packaged with high quality materials ( no holds barred here) the strings !!! Beyond compare , yes beyond compare, I know that is a bold statement , black on black how political? Black is cool black is in , black is intense and oh so happening.

These are nice fluorocarbon strings. They produce a nice sound to my ears. They are durable and less likely to be effected by temperature and humidity than nylon strings are. I appreciate that the current packaging is one where the strings come sealed up.

This should increase freshness and shelf life. Although, even without that these should be good for a very long time. Strings are very much about personal preference. I would suggest that anyone give these a try and make sure to leave them on for at least a week or two before completely forming your opinions.

You may very well find they are great strings for you and whatever uke you choose to put them on. They come highly recommended at the Ukulele Underground forums.

Like all nylon-like strings, these will stretch and detune themselves at first. They’re a joy to re-tune, though, because unlike nylon strings they don’t stick in the nut slots. They’re easy-playing too.

Found difficulty ordering fluorocarbon strings for my Tenor uke and didnt want Aquila version. Found these after a recommendation and then found the supplier. Took a little longer to settle in but the tone and feel is much smoother and brighter than those fitted previously to my Kala SMT.
