20 Best Exterior Paint For Metal Railings (2023 Updated)

This was an excellent choice. I used it on a lamp that was previously gold. It was solid black and shiny. I didn’t use it on my tables because I thought it would be too black so I went with their less extreme black paint which worked perfect.

I did wipe the surfaces down first with water and paper towels and let dry them primed with Rust Oleum grey primer.

I love the Rust-oleum brands of assorted paints! The brand has copy cats but for all of our outdoor painting needs we always stick with the brand that works much better than the rest. There are cheaper alternatives but none that will work as well and cover as evenly.

If you have things outside that are metal and exposed to the elements, Rust-oleum can protect them from rust and corrosion. I use the products on any and everything that we store outside. From wheelbarrows, to lawn furniture anyone can easily apply and get great results.

I have tried the paint and spray in a can and always have had great results. I like that it only needs to be done once and the metals are protected fully from rain water and snow. We dont have a lot of storage available so we always try to give our metals a coating so they last a long time even if they are left outside without cover.

We also painted our ladder racks on our work truck and some metal on our mud jeeps and its been years since they were treated with Rust-oleum and they are still holding up great. No rust has come through and they still look like they are freshly painted.

If you go to any hardware store its almost guaranteed that you will see a store brand with a claim that the product is comparable to Rust-oleum and I reccomend skipping the other brands and paying a little extra for the real deal.

I tried the store brands in the past and it never did work as well. I highly reccomend people use this if they have metals outside exposed to the elements and Im sure nobody will be dissapointed with the results they get.

It is a bit more expensive then other brands that promise the same results but I know for sure its worth spending the few dollars more to get the better product. A little goes a long way and you dont need to be a professional painter to use it.

Its easy to apply and will last for a very long time. Its highly available in hardware stores and home improvement stores. It is somewhat expensive but worth the cost.

Used this (in several colors) from spray to brush-on on many different surfaces. LONG lasting, durable and strong coating, Glad this product exists. (Follow instructions). The first generation of this stuff (that I can remember) was a two part epoxy.

I bought it at the local auto parts store for the first time to do wrought iron railings The paint never dried. I did not know it was a two part product as the sales person never gave me part “B”. I was livid and let them know.

I finished that project with another product, but gave POR-15 another try. I got white (2 part at the time) and used it on wood trim around an entrance door. Can’t remember when they stopped or if they stopped the 2 part product, but this was years ago and the white has not faded or chipped.

Win-win and I don’t have to do maintenance like in the past! Lately I had ordered a product and they said it was my fault (I try and do research before I buy) and I do not like being told “I was wrong” but ate it up.

I know I would use the “wrong” stuff somewhere which I did. But, I went back and bought more. They can’t return their product do to shipping hazardous stuff, blah, blah blah, research that. But research your product and this stuff is great.

This is an amazing product for sturdy applications. I used this on a ATV frame. Complete covering over 2 coats of original POR15. 1st, carburetor cleaner and brake fluid will desolve this product in seconds.

Little frustrated with that. A doing maintenance around this product may be challenging. 2nd. Once you open the can, you better have some cling rap to isolate the lid from can, or some secondary containers to transfer it into.

Once you put that lid back on, your never getting it off. Had to punch a hole in top and transfer remaining product into baby food jars. That worked great. I love the way it covers and flows out.

I have been using POR15 Top Coat in a can using a brush, foam applicator, and spray gun for application. I was pleasantly surprised at Top Coat in a spray can. The spray nozzle on the can allowed the Top Coat material to flow out adequately and consistently, in a decent fan pattern, resulting in no dry areas on the item being coated.

It went on well in mid 60 degree weather conditions, and dried fairly quickly. Wish Top Coat would have been available is spray cans years ago. Now I want to redo all the items i refinished a couple of years ago to improve the final look.

Definitely recommend.

I first tried this product on some galvanized farm gates that I had to touch up for rust spots and general wear. My 1st worry was to match the old galvanized coloration. Well, I got lucky, the product was in a perfect match for the gates and now I’m going to do my entire windmill head with it.

I’s an outstanding product and a decent price. I would recommend it highly for galvanized touch ups!.

Paint is easy to use and is applied well. Paint is specified as Caterpillar Yellow but it is not clear which shade. It seems to be “OLD Caterpillar (Highway) yellow, NOT the current “Performance Yellow” color.

There is a noticeable difference between the two.

I haven’t used it yet for a Halloween DIY doll house project. I’m looking forward to use it. Compared to other websites, this is cheaper.

Used to paint the top (trunk side) of a new gas tank in a ’69 Mustang. Went on smooth, coated well and did not clog the nozzle. Cured pretty well overnight. Pricey but I would buy again.

This was exactly what i was looking for when rebuilding my ford. I wanted a simple utility type primer to apply to my cast iron block after I ground all the rust and oil off. The primer really adheres well to the cleaned iron.

Applied a few coats of clear enamel and boom! Classed my engine right up.

Used to paint peeling/bubbling aluminum rims. Sanded down, I was using 60-80 grit to really remove powder coat. Could have wiped down all day with mineral spirits removing aluminum dust (my experience only because trying to get to bare metal).

Shake can really well, and throughout. When can begins to empty and the paint discharge starts to dwindle, just stop using can and throw away. Do not risk squirting out some big paint droplets onto your piece.

Dries nice, as long as you move around your piece giving 2 minutes for each skim coat. Build up the layers, don’t apply one heavy layer because it WILL run without the intermediate dry time in-between skim layers.

Just take your time, no rush.

I purchased the 6 pack for rusty culvert grates in front of my garage entrance. I put three coats on them and chose bright yellow for the final color. Due to the dark color of the primer, I had to apply three coats of yellow to cover the grates.

They look great.

Before ordering this product I was ready to have my copper kitchen sink replaced. It was constantly getting tarnished with horrible looking black and green stains and white moldy looking streaks. No matter how much or how often I scrubbed it, it would just start tarnishing immediately once the water was running.

When I saw this product it seemed like the perfect solution and it was! One coat of this beautiful metallic copper paint , and my sink looks stunning. After several weeks of washing pots and dishes, there is no sign of tarnishing, peeling or scratches on the finish.

I wish I had found this product before buying an expensive gallon of Tarn-X that I will never use anymore. I recommend ventilating your room before painting, and be sure to use a protective facial mask to avoid breathing the fumes.

You should also close off your other rooms where possible, especially bedrooms, and open any doors or windows where possible to let out the fumes. I do not recommend this product be used indoors by anyone who has allergies, asthma, or any sensitivity whatsoever to chemical smells, nor do I recommend it be used in houses where there are pets, children, elderly persons, or anyone pregnant or in poor health.

color wasn’t as expected. bitter dark chocolate wasn’t leathery enough. i reprimmed and repainted with other paint. too much work! Hammered did cover well. One can was not enough for a 16 foot garage door.

If using a roller, roll slowly. fast roll will throw off spider web strands of paint that take lacquer thinner to remove. And it is very sticky. I recommend a water based paint.

Outside package was not damaged. The product itself can was all bent. It would not stand up right. It wobbled and would easy spill. It had to be picked this way before placed on box. Poor quality control.

Now I have to be bothered to return it.

Excellent coverage and quick drying. It did dribble on the nozzle but that’s likely user error.

I have used the Rustoleum Industrial Acrylic Enamel before and it is great stuff. Easy to apply, dries quickly and is amazingly durable. Holds its gloss much longer than any other product I have used.

Hard to beat for exterior applications.

My handyman used it. No complaints. A steel platform holding my air compressors needed to be painted as it was rusted. Used red oxide primer first. I believe this is a quality product and I was glad to have it delivered.

We checked the prices on a professional paint job, keep in mind it cost more for larger vehicles. I decided to look on YouTube for ideas on painting the truck myself. Well, Rust-Oleum is a great paint for this project.

I found a number of videos where Rust-Oleum Flat Protective Enamel is used to paint vehicles. I purchased this paint in black, used paint rollers and a hair dryer. This paint glides on and leaves a rather thick coat.

I used the hair dryer to get rid of the bubbles in the paint, and I’m seriously amazed at how smooth the paint becomes. This truck had little to no rust, I feel confident that this paint will protect the body of my Z71.

The finished product looked amazing, it looked close to a job done at Maaco. My husband finished by adding a clear protective coat, we used Rust-Oleum clear in a can and when we finished up by adding a pin stripe, this paint job is close as one can get to a professional paint job.

in your plain white walls when you move out of an apartment, so as not to get dinged on your security deposit. Also it’s good for arts and crafts projects too — it’s truly a flat paint, not smooth or slightly glossy like acrylic paint.

Any object painted over with a few layers of this paint is easy to paint on with oils or watercolors, and to sketch on in pencil (pencil erases very easily from it too).

Super rip off.

Paint was a bit thick upon arrival. I added in some Acetone, stirred and after coming back the next morning, it was perfect. I re-did this bench that my deceased husband and I had made (hardware was from an original horse buggy, dated 100 years older), 15 years ago.

This paint, in particular, served a vital purpose as it was applied to the metal hardware. Now, it’ll last forever! It was hard to find, especially out here in California, due to environmental regulations.

Looks great on my square steel tubing handrail. But as we all know it’s all in the preparation, so I wire brushed, cleaned with mineral spirits, and primed with Rust-Oleum Primer before the color coat.

The color will fade some over the years but it is not going to peel or flake. This is the finest paint of it’s kind on the market today. I have used this product for years and the quality is unsurpassed.

It’s worth the extra money because it will last; you get what you pay for – – “buy cheap and that is exactly what you’ll get” said a wise man.

This color is amazing! I ordered it online, couldn’t find it anywhere local! The price was about double what a normal quart is ($22)! It was delivered UPS and the box was crushed at one end! Naturally it was the end the paint was in the elongated box, with airbag packing in the other end! I opened it in front of the UPS lady and it only had minimal leakage with a small amount of paint! The shipper had placed 4 spring clips on the lid to prevent opening! Otherwise the lid would have came conpletely off! The can was slightly dented! So I deceided to keep it anyway! The color is very bright and pleasing! The UPS Lady commented on that is a very nice color, it really pops! I planned to use this on a handicap curb and sign posts! Most blue paint they use for handicap is dull and boring! Now seeing the great color, I plan on useing this on the top endge color for my jon boat about 8″, then 1″ White, then Gray to the bottom! I have been searching for a color for the boat for sometime and this is it! This is very nice paint & color except for the higher price!.

This paint is great. Although it takes a couple of coats on clay it evens out and looks great. I would recommend priming the pots. Also I coat the pots inside and out after drying for at least 24 hours after 2 coats with decoart non toxic varnish and they turn out great.

I just wish Michael’s would carry more quantities and colors. More colors are at amazon but costly.

I bought these about a month ago, and I am in love with their brightness and durability. They were recommended from someone in an online video tutorial, so this should count as a double endorsement! The colors are bright, opaque (although, if you’re like me, two coats is always best!) and go on smoothly, and the clear coat is a wonderful addition.

The online tutorial I saw gave an update that the colors on her rocks were still going strong outdoors after three years. I’ve jumped on the “kindness rocks” bandwagon, and I am having so much fun with it! Leaving little symbols of kindness for others to find–and engaging my creativity–is so satisfying!.

I never thought I would ever do a review on spray paint. I have tried others. Some chocolate brown to match the original color. I wasn’t impressed. Brought this for another DIY and decided to try on my wicker clothes hamper.

Paint outdoor, wrought iron furniture, almost every season. Furniture is seven years old. This year painted underside, too. Took four cans to spray 2-3 coats on 4 chairs, table, swing, two end tables.

Am 68 and handicapped. Took two days. If I can do it, any one can. Easy, no clean up, no priming, just put on your gloves and spray. Covers/neutralizes rust well, does an excellent job, easily. Is great for wrought iron furniture that sits in the elements with no protection.

Love my furniture, love this paint.

I really love the convenience of Walmart’s online shopping, I generally order home improvement items. My latest order was Gloss White paint. I looked through the item details to see what size item I was purchasing.

I couldn’t find it anywhere, I even looked in comments. Nothing, This item is a quart I would have paid for a gallon. I just feel this was very deceptive. Seller please be completely detailed in your items.

I now must make another purchase plue tax if this doesn’t cover my project.

This paint was exactly what we needed for an at home project. Actually after sanding and priming the hood of our truck, my husband thinned this paint slightly and rolled it with a small sponge roller.

After several coats I doubt that anybody would realize it was a d. i. y. project. The gloss white is a perfect match to the rest of the truck. He even used it to touch up several scratches. Regular automotive paints are crazy expensive while Rustoleum enamels can accomplish the same thing for a lot less money.

I mean, it’s paint. It’s good paint. I’ve used it before, and it’s about time to refinish some things, because as good as it is, oil based paint yellows over time. I got the exact same paint.

I am so glad I added this brand of paint to my stash of paints. It is a good quality paint that does well when used on articles that are outside. I put an exterior seal coating over it and I don’t have to worry about the weather.

It usually covers in one coat which makes the project’s completion faster than letting paint dry and having to apply another coat. And, the best part is the number of colors that are available. I can usually find just the right color that I am looking for.

I would highly recommend this brand of craft paint.

The color is super vibrant which is nice but I had to do do multiple multiple coats to get it to not be transparent. I used it on wood that is meant to be outside and it definitely does cover up any blemishes on the wood, but it just takes a while to get there.

It dries really fast though which helps speed up the process of applying so many coats. I gave it 4 stars because this specific finished color is nice, and I didn’t really mind the coats, but it did take extra time.

Other patio paint colors by DecoArt are great and 5 stars.

Needed a small amount of touch up paint for a piece of furniture I have on my outdoor patio. Michaels had the product I needed. I only needed a small amount so the size Michaels had was perfect and a large range of colors to choose from.

I needed a apple green. Was very easy to apply and matched great. Dried quickly and reasonably priced. I am a happy customer.

The only reason this got two stars is because my chairs were absolutely gorgeous for about a month! I love the depth of color this has, and it was exactly what I was looking for! I bought a set of wicker chairs second hand that were a hideous pink.

Instead of sanding, I scrubbed the chairs with a good degreaser and a brush. I did a black primer black on them first, then coated them in this lovely paint. They were stunning, especially after i added the recovered chair cushions! I smiled happily every time i saw them on my deck for about a month.

Then they started flaking. The paint is less than a year old, and the paint has flaked off horribly. you get some flakes on your clothes every time you sit on them. I definitely wouldnt recommend for furniture use!.

This paint is awesome and looks absolutely beautiful! I repainted my bathroom fixtures and they look stunning!! I went to buy a second bottle however, as I started painting the bottle started leaking HEAVILY and over half the paint in the can leaked out while I was spray painting.

It absolutely SUCKED and was a huge pain, luckily I had painters plastic all over the floor otherwise my floors would be ruined. If you get a normal bottle this stuff is amazing otherwise good luck.

Great paint, horrible nozzle. This is the third one I’ve bought with a faulty nozzle. All would have been unusable if by the second one I didn’t figure out a way to MAKE it work (with gloves and full smock coverage for leakage issues).

Hate to recommend, but the paint itself is great, and the coverage/color are perfect.

The GOOD: I have used Krylon spray paints for 30 years and always found them to be fast-drying, no runs, drips or errors, as their old ads use to say, so I trusted this for use on plastic auto trim. The BAD: HORRIBLE paint! I would swear it was Rust-Oleum with the associated bad attributes, easily runs, causing drips and laps.

Super light coating, still has drips and runs. Wait more than 30 minutes to add more coats, and the previous coat will wrinkle! Old Krylon never did this, but this all-surface Krylon paint is nothing like that.

The UGLY: That would be the finish you end up with! I have sprayed all kinds of surfaces using Krylon conventional paints for decades, including painting outdoor lighting fixtures in direct sun by day, and heated by the lamp at night, lasting for years with an excellent enduring finish.

Not this all-surface paint! Couldn’t get a good first light coat, and additional coats wrinkled the base coat. Very disappointed, and tossing out the rest of the can! Will never buy this again!.

I bought this as have used farrow and ball before and their paint is so good for cleaning. However, although this is advertised as washable and wipeable, it really isn’t. Before purchasing and paying for a painter, do a bit of research in to F&B paint finishes to see if this is for you.

It isn’t recommended from F&B for any high use areas. It isn’t shiny either, like a previous description says, more a chalky finish that is very porous and not wipeable. I will be re purchasing the same colour elsewhere, in modern emulsion – which is a paint that can be wiped over and does have a slight sheen to it.

So unfortunately it’s a redecorate for us, just a few months after finishing.

Have used this paint quite a few times and contacted F&B when I’d a problem the first time and discovered that if it’s too warm when you use it then it dries too fast and you can thin it down with some water.

The secret is you must use the F&B primer. Any other primer doesn’t get the same effect nice tried other primers and the paint peels. If you use the matching primer it locks together and the paint lasts years with no chips at all.

You can get marks off with a magic eraser and it doesn’t damage the finish. I’ve painted my front door and the surround was painted in a different paint and a yr later the other paint has a chip and the F&B paint is still pristine.

Only negative is it’s a bit more expensive but it’s def worth the money.

I am really impressed with this paint. It goes on easily and dries very quickly. I used it as an experiment to paint over a latte colour (I needed a quick fix) the result was a beautiful light sage green colour.

I am so happy with it. It only needed two light coats. I have now bought loads of F&B paints to do the rest of my house as I was so impressed. Cleans easily, no odours too which is always a bonus. It costs more than many other paints but in my opinion the results are so much nicer.

I have used Valspar (which I like) Dulux which I think is terrible. I would now rather pay a little more for the better qualilty.
