20 Best Ethernet Adapter For Macbook Pro (2023 Updated)

I have an older Macbook Pro with two Thunderbolt 2 ports. I tried a USB ethernet adapter, only to find that I could get up to 100 Mbps speed. Out of the box, I was able to quickly configure this Thunderbolt adapter and get gigabit speed to my computer.

My only gripe is that I use two monitors and had them set up for DisplayPort to Thunderbolt. I had to switch one of the monitors from DisplayPort to HDMI to accommodate for this adapter; a bypass would’ve been nice (the USB version I bought from Moshi has this).

Bottom line, though, is that this works and serves my needs. For reliability, I assume it will last like most other Apple accessories, assuming I don’t step on it or put undue stress on the cable. The cable seems sturdy, and the two connectors are made of the same harder plastic that I’ve had on other Apple products that hold up well to wear and tear.

Okay, so. Who is this product for This adapter is perfect for those who want to get the fastest internet speeds possible to their Mac, and those who want to be able to access the internet as there is no WiFi the signal is very weak.

In my case, most of the time I need this cable as one of the essential things to pack when transporting my Mac, whether that be to a lecture or for just having for when Im in a location where the WiFi signal in my room is weak.

This cable proved to be more useful than I primarily anticipated. This is because I first purchased the adapter to obtain a more secure internet speed, in comparison to running on WiFi, which worked a treat and I can now have good internet speeds like they should be when Im on the right side of the house.

But this was also useful as a cheeky way to get around my XI forms WiFi, where I could then access certain websites that were otherwise blocked on the WiFi, such as YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud and so on.

The adapter provides a male thunderbolt 2 connection on one side, so any Macs with a thunderbolt female available will be able to use this adapter, to an Ethernet female. In order to connect to the internet, you will have to provide your own Ethernet cable so that you can plug it into the female Ethernet connection on the adapter to your internet source, whether this be a modem or internet switch or anything else that you use to plug in your Ethernet cable.

Do I think that this product was worth the purchase Yes. Do I think its worth its money No. However, it seems although it seems contradicting, I would buy the product again in a heartbeat if I lost it, but Its not worth the money I paid which was 25.

There are other options on the market that sell this adapter much cheaper, that Im sure does the same thing. I would question whether the build quality is as good as Apples adapter and if the internals will provide the same quality of internet speeds, as I believe some adapters, like modems can be not as powerful and not provide the same speeds even if using the same internet and Ethernet cable.

Although there are cons or should I say con of the price. It is a solid product and something worth looking into if you want a better internet connection to your Mac if it doesnt have an Ethernet port available.

I made a big mistake with this purchase. I needed Ethernet access for my MacBook Pro with only USB-C and similar Thunderbolt connectors. After ripping up the packaging, I realized this device was for Apple’s first generation Thunderbolt.

Shame on you Apple for not specifying which generation Thunderbolt your product utilizes. Now I’m out the cost of this thing and can’t use it. I’ll probably donate it somewhere.

Looks like most new laptops don’t supprt ethernet connections. My new HP laptop doesn’t. This inexpensive device provides a high speed connection through a USB-C port when wifi isn’t strong enough. Inexpensive.

I had tried 3 other less known brands, and they all randomly dropped out. The TP link has not once dropped out on me. Also the unit is barely warm to the touch, while the other brands got really hot (maybe that’s why they were dropping out?).

I would definitely recommend this. Its a bit larger than the other brands I tried, but certainly works well.

This thing works and saves you from tying up one of your USB ports if youre connecting to an Ethernet cable. I believe it also maximises your connection speed but I wouldnt know about that because I live in the British countryside where Im lucky to get 4 MBPS on a good day, with the wind behind me.

Its a solidly made item and does its job perfectly well. I cant give more than three stars however for two reasons. Firstly the price is preposterous and secondly it shouldnt be necessary to use one at all.

Adding to our Mac’s is always fun, but when the fun can significantly improve your workflow and productivity it is awesome. Shifting from direct attached storage via Thunderbolt to a more robust and sharable NAS solution that could keep up with my current Thunderbolt connected disk solutions was on the wish list for a long time.

That is now a reality as 10GbE over copper CAT-6A is now at an affordable price break. This little adapter is fast and iPerf3 testing proves it stays stable during demanding data transfer and live operations.

External 10GbE adapters will run hotter than standard external drives, but it is manageable and the OWC case does the job. Although bigger than your 1-GbE dongle for the MacBook travel bag, it is still portable and now goes with me on projects.

I bought this a year and two weeks ago. Up until yesterday it has worked quite well, but all of a sudden started dropping connections. System information still showed the thunderbolt side connected, however the ethernet link lights went out.

Connecting it to other networking devices resulted in no connection. The only way I could get it to work is to disconnect and reconnect the USB C cable to reset it. Not recommended!.

I originally wanted to go with a 10gbe solution on my MBP 16 to my new Synology 1621+ nas with direct connection to the nas. I setup the nas with a raid 10 and am now getting 700 mbs read and 1k mbs write.

Alot faster than a usb 3 external drive which was around 100mbs r/w. I’m now pretty happy and can edit photos from the external a lot faster. The device itself does get fairly hot but its protected by the rubber cover so it won’t really do any damage to any surface its on.

Also make sure to enable jumbo frames on your network card and the nas side as well and you should be good to go.

Materials feel a little cheap, hence the 4 stars. Functionally I can’t ask for much else. Needed this for troubleshooting connections on my Mac to office ports. Will need to test this for max thoroughput.

I was a little skeptical about compatibility at first, as Ive been burned before on USB NICs that say theyre compatible, but require you to go find some obscure driver package online to make it work, however this one worked as expected with both OSX and Windows.

I havent done any detailed performance testing, as I really only use this when doing network maintenance tasks. It provides a stable, physical gigabit connection to the LAN, which is all I need it to do.

This works great with my 2012 macbook air. I thought I would have to go with a thunderbolt adaptor of some sort and was losing hope since my computer is an older model. Being able to connect through a usb has improved my experience.

Only partially joking of courseIf you have a MacBook Air, you will know that there is no Ethernet port on the computer. Not a problem if you always use wireless, but what if you arent able to access a wireless connection, but can get a wired connection.

I work in an educational setting where there are some rooms that have no wireless signal, but there is a wired Ethernet port, so this purchase was a bit of a no brainer for me. Its basically a usb on one end to an Ethernet port on the other.

There are millions of Thunderbolt 1 machines still in service with a lot of people. But you can’t find a new disk or SSD with a Thunderbolt 1 connector to your machine. So if your existing external backup drive is failing, copying it to a new one can be excruciatingly slow.

3 month review. I have a Sony X85J 4K ultra HD TV. The integrated Ethernet port is only the old 10/100, that’s a max of 100mbps in speed. Even though Google will tell you that ultra HD streaming only requires 25-50mbps for HD streaming that just isn’t the case.

Through testing, while watching a 4k ultra HD documentary on Netflix it would play fine for awhile but then the connection would jump to the max 100mbps during a buffer and the picture would degrade.

This happened a few times each episode. After connecting this adapter to the USB 3. 0 port on the TV, watching the same show, the buffering issue disappeared, and in the same testing could see the buffering jump was hitting 110-125mbps.

It’s sad you pay hundreds of dollars for a 4k television and they skimp out on the connections. This adapter made the experice what it should be. FINAL NOTE: the reason I use the Ethernet port is it’s right next to the router and it eliminates one more device using WiFi in our house.

HP has a front end on the setup environment which surprisingly let me load with local accounts (MS Windows OEM has gotten difficult about this) however it absolutely refused to go any further without having a network connection.

I had left the adapter off thinking I had to trick the OS setup into letting me avoid a M$ account, however, was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was just needed to download the Win 11 OS, and it had no issue with me picking a local account (should be the same on the Amazon deal on the above link).

I have random 256 bit AES keys (and numerous other lockdowns) so typing in the wifi key would be a real PITA. Very glad to have this device, it’s an EXCELLENT value and worked perfectly with zero drivers even during the Win PE (pre-installation environment) portion of OS setup.

I loved the fact that it was a plug and play install. I bought these for my laptop because the Ethernet port was busted and the WiFi was touch and go. It got 125mbps down with 18 up on USB 2. 0 then tested at 165 mbps down with 22 up on USB 3.

0. My maximum speeds are 400 down and 25 up. It is a huge improvement from not having working ethernet port and WiFi that cuts in and out. Not getting full speed however, it just needed to work. It does get warm while it’s being used, but like any device that’s just normal.
