20 Best Duffel Bag For Checked Luggage (2023 Updated)

So very well made, it fit 1 week of clothes for me, and I am 5. 9 and 165 lb, so not small. I placed my clothes in 5 gallon zip lock bags, squeezed all the air out before closing those and it makes nice flat little packages.

I was able to fit a lot. The pockets outside expand also and make organizing it a breeze. Plus with the wheels it is so easy to maneuver around. I had to take a bus from the airport, Bag fit perfect into the overhead bin, after arriving in Providence I walked about 2 miles with the bag, it was super easy.

Then when I boarded the boat I was going to be on, the bag collapses and fit in a drawer. This is the best bag ever :).

Just purchased two of these duffel bags – one to replace the one I have used for years and one for my husband since he liked the drop bottom feature. This bag holds an amazing amount of clothing, shoes and toiletries.

It has been used for several years and has been taken on several cruises, road trips and flights. It has held up beautifully and just developed a tiny tear on the bottom following a recent cruise and flight.

The tear could probably have been repaired with some electrician’s tape, but since my husband was interested in replacing his (and they were on sale), I decided to replace mine as well. The duffel held all my clothing for a nine-night cruise and would be ideal if it was a tad larger to accommodate formal clothing which we had to put in a folding garment bag.

The drop bottom took all my clothing and the top held shoes, jacket and toiletries and other miscellaneous items. When fully packed, the items do not shift and clothing arrives relatively wrinkle free.

Because the bag weighs so little, even jam packed, we are never in danger of being overweight with the airline. One negative is it does not stand upright by itself. It is the only bag I used anymore.

I bought five of these for my family when they were onsale for just under thirty bucks. Current price 5x that, and I don’t think they’re worth that. They are great because they are carry-on size but carry a lot.

Rolling works well. The pockets are quite small and don’t really add much utility beyond slipping some documents or receipts inside. The inside dimensions are about 10″ square by 22″, which is awkward for common packing cubes, so if you’re a cubes fan, keep looking.

I haven’t used this bag yet that’s why only a 4 star. I purchased to take to Africa coming up in September. It looks very well made, I like the mesh pockets inside which most duffel bags don’t have. I will update my review once I have an opportunity to use the bag.

I purchased based on online reviews & that I needed a soft sided bag to travel in small planes in Africa. The only thing I do not like it has no shoulder strap, I knew this buying it but sure do wish there was a detachable strap.

Some cool features on this bag that makes it superior to the north face bags. The back pack straps go OVER the zippered area. Less likely for stuff to get stolen while backpacking. Very durable waterproof material.

Every year we go in a beach vacation and need to check one bag full of all of the extra “stuff”. Fins, snorkels, sun screen , beach bags, sneakers etc etc etc. my husband and I could not believe how much we were able to load into this amazing bag.

It made our travel so much easier especially with two kids. We have used other bags in the past but none compare to the capacity and durability of this one. The zipper is great quality as is the material that makes up the body of the bag.

It stands up to the tsa loading and unloading no problem. We would highly recommend this bag. Also have it in the smaller sizes and would recommend for the quality.

Bought these in three different colors/styles for my three older girls, and they love them. Very easy to pack, and unpack. Easy to roll around, easy to see what’s inside when packed. Lots of great pockets and not too heavy.

They can be folded/ collapsed down for easy storage. We used them on family vacation for three years in a row on car trips, and hotels. They held up surprisingly well for the price paid. We plan on using them again for vacation this summer.

The construction is sturdy with reinforced stitching and piping on all the corners. They don’t do well standing on their own unless you have fully and evenly packed all four corners of the bag. The zipper pulls are large, and the zippers have large teeth.

We have packed these to bulging, an have never had a zipper rip or bust on us, nor a handle, nor a carry strap, nor a wheel. There is a shoulder strap, two handheld straps, and a end-of-bag strap. Giving you multiple carry options.

The wheels are clear, large, and durable with treads. The handle can be compressed down into the bag, and zipped closed to be carried as a regular duffle. I’m 5’4″ and the handle when fully extended comes to above my waist.

The material is an vinyl-type and seems to be water resistant. These are perfect for my 10, 9,and 4 year olds to pull themselves. I can imagine if you had to stay somewhere longer than a couple weeks, these would probably not be big enough for you.

The colors are bright, and true to the photos shown. The size looks like 24″ long unpacked. I have checked out all the other bags and prices and reviews on Amazon, and Walmart. com, and this one is the best value for the size.

I also love that there are so many prints to choose from.

Cute pattern, fabric feels durable but will not work for the reason why I bought it. A week long outdoor education trip. It’s a little heavy for my girls to carry on grass, stairs, dirt, etc. I know the wheels & handle’s weight doesn’t seem heavy but for a little kid it will make a difference when it’s packed.

I’d keep it if they could use it as a roller the entire time. We didn’t use it but while testing the wheels & handle it rolled smoothly in our floor. It did have a plastic smell and it’s been sitting out for about a week in the garage unzipped & it still has the smell.

You’d probably have to wipe it down with something or maybe try putting a dryer sheet in it. Pockets look small but the top zippered pocket actually is deeper that passes behind the bottom pocket & the bottom zipper is a shorter pocket.

Also, it doesn’t stand up like a luggage. it is meant to be put down like a duffle bag.

Faced with prospect of needing to transport Aqua Bag to gym, I needed a rolling suitcase large enough to accommodate; this bag was just large enough to accommodate. Alas, I did not need, because my gym’s heavy bag was intact.

Trade off to room, however, is size: It was difficult or impossible to cram it into those narrow gym lockers because of width. It’d be perfect for airline travel, tho!.

The bag split at the top the 1st day I used it. It’s not the greatest quality but the sellers are very easy to deal with. They tried to rectify the problem but I wasn’t able to return the bag.

I bought this for a trip that required walking in the city. This bag tips over while rolling, doesn’t stay straight and if packed full, won’t roll over cracks without getting stuck and yanking out of your hand.

It doesn’t have a shoulder strap, so I had to carry it by it’s handles for 6 blocks. Bad purchase.

I just used this for the first time for a long weekend out of town. It seems sturdy & can be either rolled or carried. Lots of little zippered compartments to organize shoes & miscellaneous items. Plenty of room for the clothes I needed and extra space to come home with gifts.

While this bag is smaller than the one we had before so it stores less stuff when we go food shopping, it does have enough room so that with my wife and I both having one we can get all the food we need in a trip.

The bonus is that it is small enough for us to be able to get on the bus to ride home if it is raining or very hot outside and we don’t want to walk.

Pros: This isn’t just a duffel bag. It is a suitcase shaped like a duffel bag. Lots of compartments. I bought 4 locks in case I need to lock all the outside compartments, but there are separate compartments inside as well.

Great quality. Nice looking. And I received it in a day or two from ordering. Excellent product and excellent service. Cons: The only con I can think of is the place where you put the locks on the zippers doesn’t have a separate hole designated just for locking your luggage.

So I bought the luggage locks that have the flexible cable instead of the all metal locks because I ordered the locks before the duffels arrived. You could make the all metal locks work though but you have to lock it through the holes in the handle of the zipper.

Still highly recommend though.

I bought this for my husband. The quality of the fabric is excellent. The wheels roll smoothly. The zippers are great quality and zip up easily. So many separate compartments for storage and organization.

I ordered 2 black/pink bags , one bag seems great ! The other has zipper issues on the side zippers very disappointing ! We are using the bags for the 1st just to see if they are going to hold up traveling but the one bag lost 2 extra storage places.

I bought this duffle in preparation for a business trip. I prefer to travel lighter as opposed to checking luggage, and this bag meets TSA standards for carry on size. It looks really cool, matching the SwissGear backpack that my firm gifted us for our laptops (I can coordinate my luggage), and has convenient and well placed pockets and compartments for you to store your things in.

The bag also has a sort of stylish, performance-like aesthetic which fits me better than the suitcases you roll through the airport. When talking space, it’s pretty spacious too! I managed to fit 3 business casual outfits and 1 business professional suit in the bag (carefully folded without creasing, still on the hanger and in the suit bag), 4 days worth of underwear (underwear, socks, t shirts) an outfit to workout in at the hotel gym, 2 pairs of shoes, and all the necessary toiletries for the trip.

I’ve had my previous duffle since 2004 and after years of deployment it was starting to show it’s age. When I travel for work, I carry a ton of weight. I put most of my weight in 2 heavy duty pelican trunks and keep my duffle under 50lbs for the airlines.

Once in the field, I transfer most of my weight in my duffle and carry on my shoulder to be more “mobile”. In 2017 I maxed out at 110lbs in my duffle which inevitably lead to it starting to fray understandably.

I ended up deploying a couple of weeks ago and loaded my duffle up at 48lbs and when I got to the airport and took my duffle out of the shuttle and put on my shoulder. the strap snapped off where the photo shows.

Scrambled and got to the counter and reconnected it hoping it was a one time thing. Now, moving hotels, I got the weight down to 34lbs and it still snaps off. I could understand if I had this thing over 100lbs.

but I can’t even get it to an airport standard of under 50lbs. Beautifully designed duffle and exactly what I needed. but if I can’t carry minimal weight on my shoulder when moving locations. it’s a moot point.

I need functional over pretty. and right now. this think is only “pretty”.

Big enough to be big, but not huge. My Swissgear backpack was starting to get heavy and really full when traveling. Two Toiletry Bags, 2 iPad, chargers, and plugs, two sets of headphones. While my luggage was pretty full.

The new Swissgear 9000 duffle easily, takes my wife’s shoes in the side pocket, my size 14s go in the bag. Toiletries, my New Swissgear Tabet-Tech portfolio with All my electronics, cables, etc in it.

It takes my DSLR camera bag, my cowboy boot, and best of all my jacket so I don’t have to carry it on the plane etc. I have Zero complaints with this bag and the new Tablet Tech portfolio. The material is great.

Love that this bag is lightweight and tough. I’ve taken it on 4 international trips so far and it’s still going strong. The little plastic foot that helps hold the bag upright got ripped off on the first trip.

I covered up the holes with duct tape and we’re still rolling. I like the hard plastic skids on the back, really helps keep the back of the bag intact. Travelling is hard on luggage and I’m not willing to pay $300 for a bag that will only last a few trips.

Even if this bag only lasts one more trip, I’ll feel like I totally got my moneys worth. I don’t use the little side pockets much, but they are handy from time to time.

This is a relatively inexpensive piece of luggage appropriate for occasional travel. Zippers and corner seams are poor quality and will separate and fray with frequent use. The many pockets make this useful as a referee bag.

I can easily separate watches, whistles, ball pumps, badges, coins and recordkeeping materials, from each other and find them easily. The bag wears out and has to be replaced, but since its inexpensive, thats not a big deal.

I bought 3 of these for an upcoming trip. They seem to be good quality. However, the description said that it stands and rolls in an upright position. I was wondering how it did that with only 2 wheels.

Guess what, it doesn’t. It can not roll upright, you have to tilt it to roll. Otherwise, this would have been a good find at a great price. It does not work for our purpose. I called customer service and told them the description is wrong.

Hopefully they will change it.

My husband and I received two of these as wedding gifts. We needed luggage for our honeymoon on a European cruise. These duffels fit 3 weeks worth of clothes in them, plus shoes and all the souvenirs and gifts we collected throughout the vacation.

They held up very well over 6 different plane rides. The only thing I would say is that I wish the bottom of the inside of the duffel was harder. You can’t put anything in the bottom zippered section that you don’t want squished (like shoes), because everything in the duffel basically sits on top of it with no barrier except the thin cloth.

We just put a bunch of our thicker folded clothing down there and it worked just fine!.

5 years ago I bought the older version of this bag for my daughter outdoor camp. She still uses it for camp at least once in a year for couple weeks. It’s still in great condition. I was looking for the same bag for my son and was happy to find this newer version and so far so good (he used it once for a week long camp)!!! Also had very nice experience with customer service.

The bag was not in the store and the lady ordered it online and it arrived in few days to my door.

My spouse and I loaded this duffel, slung it on numerous Greyhound buses, and hauled it all over two Canadian cities. It held up just fine. The wheels are inline skate wheels so they are very durable.

The “butt” of the bag is also stiff enough that the fabric part didn’t hit the ground when going over rough spots. (I’ve had this problem with other wheeled duffels. ) It is large enough to hold a couple of changes of clothes, snacks, and toiletries for a week for the two of us with plenty of room to spare.

(We do tend to travel light. ) I agree with one of the other reviewers: The fact that the handle doesn’t lock into place is an annoyance. But it wasn’t a big problem at any time. Great duffel for the money!.

Ordered this in gray for packing away/storing college dorm supplies as I get them and later hauling things back and forth to son’s dorm. He’s not a fan of the typical footlockers, but I wanted something with a similar size and with the convenience of wheels.

It’s actually larger than most footlockers I’ve seen. Opens nice and wide for easy packing. Has reinforced straps on both ends, so two people can carry it up flight of stairs. I have already placed a twin XL comforter, two toss pillows, two twin XL sheet sets, and a package of hangers in it and there’s plenty of room to spare.

Love that it folds up when not in use (it arrived folded in a roughly 14 inch sized square shape). Appears well made so I expect it will hold up, but I don’t plan to use it for very heavy hauling.

(TL;DR Version: REALLY big bag, awesome quality) A friend of mine gave me the advice that for moving in my dorm (which as most people know, are only slightly bigger than the average walk-in closet) I would want luggage that could hold a lot of clothing and supplies, but also fold for easy storage rather than taking up copious amounts of space in the corner like your typical luggage set would.

This arrived about as quickly as I expected (less than a week, I think) and I was amazed by the size and quality of the bag when I took it out and unfolded the bottom board. And then I zipped myself into it.

Anyway, it now contains two sets of sheets, three set of towels, a comforter, and a Dust Devil stick vacuum with some room to spare. I could not be happier with this purchase and will recommend it to my friends starting college next year!.

I bought this for an upcoming trip where I needed to transport lots of gear. It was larger than I expected, which could be a good thing. When I checked the dimensions with the airline regulations I learned that the size would put it into the oversized category with extra charges.

I won’t be using it as planned, just a note to others who might neglect to check the dimensions as I did if planning to use for airline travel.

Our family of three each brought these as our main luggage on our 12-day trip to Europe. We didn’t want to risk losing our bags, and each of these held 4-5 days worth of summer clothes. The features are a perfect balance of useful but sensible.

First, the bag has a double zipper that separates the bottom plastic section from the upper duffel section, which allows for great organizing. It also means you can get into half of the bag without disturbing the other half.

In the top duffel section, the main bag opens with a double zipper in a U shape. Towards the bottom of the bag there’s a zippered separate compartment that can be used or not, like for dirty clothes.

In the zipper flap, there’s one big mesh pocket on the underside, handy for organizing, and a smaller zip pocket on the outside under the handle. Finally there’s a pretty roomy zipper pocket under the top handle when the bag is standing up.

I found this pocket great for going through security, since it fits my wallet, cell phone, and watch plus pretty much everything in my pockets. So two main compartments plus four separate zippered pockets allow you to really organize your stuff, or just stuff everything in the duffle section, your choice.

Finally, on the outside there are four cinch down straps to help narrow the load. Even pulled down tight, the bag has a tendency to be thick, which can make fitting it in the overhead bin a little bit of a challenge.

Best to squeeze your stuff in lengthwise (top to bottom) and side to side so those cinch down straps keep it thin. Overall we are very happy with the style, functionality, and fit of these carry-ons.

I was really excited that the new Expedition Duffel had finally become available. I had an original Expedition Duffle 1. 0 that lasted 7 years and almost 400,00 miles of documented air travel. I doubt this 2.

0 will last half as long. Quality of materials is definitely cheaper and many durable features are now missing, including the rugged eagle relief backing and no main compartment liner. Why? The new wheels are cheaper, less durable, and the balance of the roller bag is off – leading to frequent “death wobbles” if you corner too quickly.

This never occurred with the original Expedition Duffle 1. 0. I am sad to say that, while the 2. 0 is just as packable and versatile as the original, the overall feeling is disappointment in the reduced quality of materials, missing original features, and questionable durability.

Definitely not worth $100 more than the original.

This Expedition 22 Duffel was a replacement for an identical bag that began to tear apart at its seams after only about 4 trips. The canvas is sewn to the plastic shell, which is the weak spot in its design.

I never packed this bag over capacity, but that seam is in tension if the soft side is stretched at all. Piercing the plastic shell to receive stitching is nonsensical to me. EB has essentially perforated the hard material so the seam will tear easily under any load.

In my case, it opened on one corner and showed evidence of the same in another. I didn’t notice the flaw until I got to the airport which put me in a very uncomfortable position. I greatly appreciate EB’s willingness to replace the bag.

Unfortunately, I don’t if I can trust the Expedition 22 for more than car trips in the future.

I do my best to write honest reviews, which can at times be hard when it’s one of your favorite gear and apparel companies and the gear misses the mark for you. I have been using the Black Hole 100L wheeled bag for I think three years now.

I think I can give a considered review at this time. I have only used this bag for domestic air travel with Delta and American and will limit my comments to domestic travel. I am an adventurous traveler from start to finish.

I have put this bag through it’s paces and have been very pleased with it’s performance. I fly out of Minneapolis St. Paul International (MSP) via the Fridley Station Light Rail park and ride. I park free for 7 nights here(sometimes 9).

Every time, I park my car and wheel the bag over 100 yards of concrete lot, curbs and a bit of cobblestone across the street over another curb and across some grass to the 52A bus stop. I drag the bag onto the bus and ride the one stop to the Minneapolis metro rail blue line.

I drag the bag off the bus across the concrete sidewalk and cobblestones of the rail station. Wheel it onto the train, wheel it off the train across the platform and up two escalators and thru the airport.

Baggage handlers then throw it around like 800lb gorillas and I pick it up in baggage claim. The adventure does not end here if I don’t rent my car at the airport. Lets say I’m flying into Seattle where the rental car prices are jacked up so the city can pay for new stadiums and such.

In this case I wheel the bag from baggage claim thru the airport and across the flyway bridge and onto Seattle light rail. Up to North Seattle and wheel it off the train, across the platform and up two escalators and out onto the street.

Two more blocks of concrete and curbs to the Alamo location. On one trip i arrived at the rail station park and ride just as the heavens opened up. The100yrd. walk to the bus stop was like walking under a waterfall with inch deep puddles in the lot.

My Lowe Pro canvas camera bag was soaked thru. Good thing my camera and electronics were in a two gallon zip locs. The Black Hole bag had some wetness inside, but actually held up well in the 20min. deluge it took.

Way better than the canvas Lowe Pro bag. I have done this with the Black Hole 100L many times all around the country. The wheels have been rock steady, no discernable damage other than scratches. I have been waiting for the wheels to fail.

they have not. The bag it’s self has no tares or rips, only some pretty light scratches on the rear plastic rails. The telescoping handle still solid. The YKK zippers and track. good to go. Never a problem with bag size and the airlines.

My experience with the 100L wheeled bag has been so good that I purchased the 55L duffel(non-wheeled) and the 70L(non-wheeled) along with the MLC Black Hole. That’s it. I say buy it, you won’t be disappointed.

I bought 2 120L rolling duffel bags in the paintbrush colour earlier this year. Amazing colour to spot them amongst the sea of luggage at the airport. This rolling duffel handled all of our clothes for 15 days, hiking, water sports and electronic gear amazingly from our vacation in Kauai this month.

The 120L is cavernous! I had to be extremely mindful of exceeding the airline’s 50lb weight limit. Apart from grease and dirt from airline handling, the rolling duffel was unscathed. Handles and wheels were undamaged.

If you want a spacious luggage that offers flexible sidewalls that can accommodate odd sized objects and tons of gear, this is one to consider. You have one massive compartment, so it’s up to you to pack as needed.

But if you want compartments to separate your shoes and other items, there are a buffet of other choices. I have TNF duffels and TNF rolling duffels as well. The Patagonia Black Hole is lighter, but less structured as the TNF rolling duffel.

I find the frame and hard edges on the TNF rolling duffel a bit more restrictive in terms of my packing. So depending on your preference, you’ll need to choose based on your need. But from my experience the 120L rolling duffel did exactly what I bought for.

to withstand airline handling, carry/contain my gear safely, and do it with style/simplicity. My only suggestion was to have a way to tighten the exterior handle straps to minimize the chances of them getting caught as it travels through airport conveyors.

I’ve always been a big fan of the wheeled Black Hole. In fact, I’m on my third iteration of the bag over a period of at least 15 years if not more (not sure exactly when I got my first one). In general this bag is durable, big, and can easily be overloaded past the 50lb airport limit, so it’s nice to have the wheels.

I’ve dragged these things all over the world, including some extremely remote areas where you might not think of bringing a wheeled bag. For example in and out of bushplanes in the Arctic circle, where your moving from plane, to skiff, to dragging your gear to remote campsite.

Trust me – the wheels are handy even in this scenario, going over cobblestone and down dirt trials. The latest model of this bag has some noteworthy changes, some good, some (at least for me) not as good a previous models.

The good: 1. A fair bit lighter weight than previous models 2. The waterproof fabric is a bonus over earlier models, both to shed water and styling-wise. I like it. 3. The compression straps, previously on the exterior have been moved inside.

Not sure how that works in practicality when you’re trying to compress a lot of loose items inside the bag, but I do like the cleaner exterior by not having to have the straps get snagged on stuff. The not as good: 1.

Main thing missing on this new one for me is the separate dirty shoe zippered compartment that was found at the top of the bag. Who goes anywhere without multiple shoes? For sure it was nice to be able to throw them in there, separate from all your clothing.

Patagonia please bring this back! 2. Parts of this duffel are not as well made and perhaps as durable as previous models. Mine is still new-ish so remains to be seen. But in particular the whole molded undercarriage seems not as bombproof, the wheels are just the hollow plastic kind ( but lighter weight) than the old ones which were nice roller-blade wheels with sealed bearings.

3. There used to be a collapsible rigid flap that held up the bottom of the duffel, which now in the new model, is no longer collapsible. So no more storing it under the bed – bummer! If you’ve never had one of these, I’m sure you’ll like this wheeled duffel.

The telescoping handle seems sturdy and able to withstand years of abuse. Like any product line, some changes are for the better, some for the worse, but all-in-all probably can’t find a better all around travel bag.

I bought this piece of luggage online because as the name says, it’s a duffel bag on wheels. It is perfect for carrying ski equipment on a flight. However, it is not very practical if you are carrying various items of different sizes and weight.

It has many compartments and is relatively lightweight. I did hesitate on purchasing a piece of luggage online but I was in a rush and decided to give it a try as it is, after all, Samsonite. However, after one trip overseas one of its wheels is coming undone and was not happy with the weight distribution.

For me, I should have stuck with ordering a traditional Samsonite suitcase.

What I like about this duffel: seems solid (for a duffel), long handle when extended, in and out smoothly. Rolls nicely on big wheels. Stands on the bottom if full enough. What I didn’t like: the top (or handle) side opens into a plastic bag.

I suppose that’s for wet or dirty stuff. Good idea, but poor implementation. The bag is stiff and it cannot be pushed to the side completely, so it takes up space from the main compartment, even if you don’t use it.

Not foreseeing much use for it, I just cut it out.

I bought this for my husband! I was surprised to know that with one zipper that it was able to convert into a deeper duffel bag. This did not show in the picture. I like the sturdiness of the wheels.

And I like that it stands up on its own. My husband doesn’t have to sling it over his shoulders. My husband likes the four differ pockets, three interior and one exterior. One pocket is plastic lined and the other is padded.

I bought this at a great price—around $40–to use as a carryon. Lots of space, lots of packets, great organization. But when I packed it to take on a recent flight it was just too heavy to schlep on my shoulder for a long time.

It would be a different story if there were wheels. So I’m gifting it to my husband since he loves it and the weight once packed is not an issue for him. I could see using it myself if we were taking a car trip but not for a train or plane trip.

Glad I didn’t have the 10 month back order really happen. Was about a month instead. Love the bag. Would like metal rings instead I think, for the handle pieces, but we’ll see how these hold up. Great quality fabric and like how it has a little internal component to hold dirty shoes or something; that was a surprise.

I purchased this for my daughter who makes frequent weekend trips. It is perfect! It is well made; tough material and the handles, zippers and velcro seem very sturdy. I LOVE the number of zippered compartments on the outside and inside of the bag, allowing much room to separate clothing and shoes from personal care items.

I had it personalized with her name which makes it quickly identifiable. There honestly does not seem to be any extra needed features or any that are substandard. She first had a duffel bag that came from a competitor in outdoor gear that was not even in the same class as this one.

It was just a few dollars cheaper. Do yourself a favor and spend a little bit more and buy this remarkable bag. You’ll be happy you did!.
