20 Best Double Roller Timing Chain Sbc (2023 Updated)

Purchased this for a 70’s 350 along with the cl12-600 cam and the block has never been clearanced properly so the back of the timing chain hit the lip of the camshaft input tunnel. I just grabbed some grease and a file and took it down about a 1/16.

grease was used to catch the metal so you don’t have it going everywhere.

For the price this timing set is well worth it. I believe it will last for many miles if installed on a daily driver. Definitely looks to be well above a stock non roller single chain. Great product

Solid product. Gear had marking but we’re stamped a little sloppy. No biggie. Please not this set does NOT come with bolts needed. Use your old ones or buy set with locking plate from summit.

I used this to replace a brand X ” DOUBLE ROLLER” chain that was stretched. The set itself is easy to install, straightforward. It’s a good quality piece from a trusted hotrod brand. It’s an actual roller chain.

It worked great during the break in of the motor and I expect a long life of use from it. Mine went on a 388 sbc rebuild with a strong power and from 2500 to 6300. I don’t plan on revving higher than that.

If that sounds about your speed, this is the set you should get.

This Edelbrock 7800 double roller set is ideal and a perfect fit for my SB Chevy rebuild project. The double roller chain is much more durable and an improvement over stock sets. The crank sprocket on this set has 3 keyways and is made out of 1144 forged and heat treated steel.

I would recommend this set to most stock Chevy SB rebuild projects.

This is the timing chain installed. I´ve had several types of chain mostly double roller and none have been so slack. I only used it because the Edelbrock roller cam kit instructions told me I must or I´d have timing problems.

Very disappointed. The chain failed and came apart at the link that joined the chain. The car ran great for 1 day then I heard metal noise. Immediately turned off the engine. To figure out what happened had to take the radiator, water pump out and timing cover off and found the chain broken with shreded metal pieces of the chain.

Now the oil pan has to be dropped, cleaned of any metal debris along with the cam. The car has to be put back together with compression testing. I just did an oil change as well. I had a car show I was to attend the next day, needless to say I’m out the entry fee there, oil, filter, new oil pan gasket, etc.

When i tried installing this the first time the dowel pin was to short to reach through to the eccentric. I just got off the phone with Edelbrock technical support. Apparently with this setup you have to push the dowel pin through after putting the gear and eccentric on and as you tighten it down then you push the dowel pin in and twist the eccentric against it to lock it in place.

The pin isnt going to bottom out in the cam like the usual setup. If you push the dowel all the way into the cam first then it wont be long enough to engage the eccentric.

The timing chain seems like it is sturdy and well machined kit. But there was no mention of the single eccentric that is used with the double roller being so close to the timing cover that you might have to grind it down, so it will not eat into your timing cover and fill the engine with aluminum shavings.

Needless to say a new cam thrust plate and another round of gaskets I might be ok. The double roller is much thicker than stock.

Installed a Cloyes HD roller on my 429. Ok right at first, but then having timing issues. Used this CC set on a 390 build before. What a difference. The Cloyes had stretched waayyy out in less than 5k.

I installed this timing chain and gear on a 70 Corvette 454. The parts appear to be well made, and I think will give good service. However there is a little more slack in the chain than I think there should be, especially for new.

The chain went right on when installing with the cam gear. Usually there’s a tightness when installing the first time, every thing has to be perfect. Not this one. Just seemed to loose to me for brand new.

Not crazy about it. I guess it will be OK. Would not buy again. Not recommended.

Working great so far. Easily slides on the crank snout and cam dowel. Comes with great instructions and Comp Cams stickers. Using with B303 and heavy valve springs.

I have installed but not run this yet. It fits acceptably and I assume it will run OK. I did have to grind about 0. 060″ off a boss on the block behind the cam sprocket to provide clearance for the chain.

It is noted in the directions this might be an issue. The crank sprocket is tight, as it should be. I didn’t heat it to put it on. Wish I had as without that it took quite some time to get on without a dedicated tool for this.

I first used a large brass drift to tap side to side, but after some time that became less productive. With about. 040″ more seating needed I used a piece of 1. 5″ diameter black pipe about 3″ long. I used that as it is a softer steel so less likely to damage the sprocket.

I placed it over the crank snout and against the sprocket. This put the load evenly on the sprocket and move it very quickly into position. The chain went on very well and has nice tension. The reason for a 4 instead of 5 star is that the valley’s of the teeth are not very smooth.

They look like little if any smoothing was done after cutting the teeth. This will certainly add some wear to the chain. It may not have any detrimental effect during the expected life of the timing set.

But a quality product should have a quality look. Adding a dollar or two to the price to cover some extra time in polishing would not have resulted in me selecting a different product.

When you search for ls timing chain advance pays to be top ad that pops up. Says in the headline true-roller. Yet the first question is why isn’t it street legal and a verified reply was 1. not for factory roller i.

e. the entire ls family. 2. Declares it’s not a true roller. Done shopping at advanced for me. Lying and deceitful is too much to win a sale I’ll stick with cheaper more knowledgeable and ethicaly bound auto retailers see if they block the truth.

Very high quality. excellent fit and function. I would recommend this double roller timing set very highly.

This appears to be a high quality timing chain. It has the 3 keyways that allows the installer to install the cam “ahead, zero or behind”. I can’t use the word we normally use to describe because Summit is flagging them as “inappropriate language”.

What can I say… easy to install and appear’s to operate ok.

Chain fit great and machined finish quality was good. Be sure your block is clearanced for a double roller chain.

After waiting around at summit for two hours trying to get a timing set for a roller cam because not one sales rep knew roller cams have a smaller cam gear bolt pattern, I was finally successful finding a sales rep who understood and took my advice to look up a roller cam kit from any cam manufacturer and get the part# for the timing set included with said kit.

On 96+ Vortec/lt chevy blocks an oil galley has to be ground down for clearance. (Not a big deal) takes about 5 mins. Also there are pretty stout single rollers out there that will work. A heads up for chevy guys- the 88-95, 638 blocks have all the provisions for a factory roller set up yet still have the protruding front camshaft hole so you can run double roller timing sets without modification.

Be sure to use the round keyway on crank gear for stock recommendations.

This timing chain set appears to be well worth the cost. On a 638 casting block, the center oil galley had to be filed down as expected to run the double roller. The gear markings line up perfectly once all bolts are tightened, and the chain has almost no slack.

The timing set is clearly marked for installation and fits fantastic in my small block. Nice and tight fit looks and feels very high quality.

Changed out camshaft & timing chain on my ‘93 LX last week. Great fit & upgrade from stock. LMR always has the best selection of parts!

The fuel eccentric pin from the OEM cam sprocket is to loose! Does not need to be pressed in. Will drop right in and thus won’t stay and fall in the oil pan or ride back on the cam face washer (I think).

NOTE: Picture, shows the OEM pin from ’65, and me just dropping it in the sprocket. Wonder if there is a bigger fuel eccentric pin I can find that is tight for this sprocket? If so, please let me know or SUMMIT, send me one please.

I have a 1972 F250 flatbed with an FE 360 engine. I just bought this truck just for fun and utility purpose. It started out with a 2BBL carb. The 2BBL carb had issues not working properly. So I change to a 4BBL.

While changing the manifold I checked the timing chain and it seamed a bit lose. I did not have time to change the timing chain yet. so I finished putting the 4BBL on. Well of course I had problems it backfired through the carb.

So then I knew the lose chain was the problem. When I found some time I put the new timing chain on and it runs great. 15MPG with this heavy truck never ran so good. As far as putting this timing chain on it was a dream.

Every thing fit just right. Summit Racing shipped this out fast as always.

I have a 1972 Ford F-250 Camper Special with a 360 cid. When I replaced the oil pump I noticed how loose the timing chain was. I ordered a timing chain and gear set from summit racing. Got this set in less than 24 hours.

Installed this timing kit on my 1994 mustang 5.0/302. It worked great. Chain was nice & tight and sprockets fit perfectly. Pleased with this purchase.

I ordered a sealed power timing chain set which when installed the chain had 1 inch plus in slack. I have been a master tech for some 37 years and have never installed a chain set that had any play in it.

I ordered another timing set and the same thing. I called Cloyes tech line and they suggested a matched set. After some consideration and thought i tried this unit. I got it in 2 days and was eager to install it and see if it was tight.

Well 3 times a charm it fit perfectly. Summit Racing has one of the easiest return policies. The parts are by far the best chain sets i have installed.

I received the items, and as always I received a Great product. The only problem was the way the items were packaged. The box that the timing set came in was open and the chain and both gears were just laying in the shipping box.

I check for damage and did’nt see any, but there was no packing material in the box to hold anything from moving around. Everything had been bouncing around the shipping box. I could see where the timing gears had been beating on the shipping box.

All you or roller timing sets are not the same. All are better than stock. Cheaper sets,the chain links are hour glass shaped and bearings have a seam. These are oval shaped links and no seam in bearing.

In racing,. the weak leak of your engine can. destroy it all. So use quality parts. Pay a little more. now. or a lot more later.

Just began to assemble my 1988 IROC LB9 and attempted to test fit cam gear. The screw hole spacing is much larger than required. My cam (factory) has the cam screws at roughly 1″OC, these I measured at roughly 1.

16″OC. Don’t know how these can be listed as compatible. The gear and chains look to be a quality set, but I rated it 2 stars because it does not fit. Cannot seem to upload pictures (“something went wrong” error”).

Time to drive 40minutes to Summit.

Nice sturdy chain n gears. A little pricey though. Only time will tell if it’s really worth the extra money.

Replace OEM plastic stuff with this! Further more, needed on 1972 and up cars to correctly advance the cam to Zero/zero. Remove the 4 degrees of cam retar that’s built into 1972 and up timing sets.

Put in the true roller timing gear and. Hain kit hoping the double roller helps out pull alot of weight around hoping it holds up better than the one I took out all in all went together perfect was very happy.

i’ve always ran and had great success with edelbrock true roller chains. they are better than “double roller” and flat link stock style chains.

Sirtorino said : “Didn’t fit. Couldn’t put timing cover back on”. Original ( flat ) sprocket had like a 1/4″ spacer on shaft first, then sprocket to space sprocket away from engine to allow room for chain clearance.

New sprocket has built on spacer. Remove separate spacer from shaft, put on new sprocket. Wallah. works wonderful. Novel idea. Davy Jones. :).

said it was for a ford 289 motor but will not let me put timing cover back on. my set was flat to were this one had a step up on it. lucky i have a 302 i can use it on.

The shipping was appropriate since the item came from the manufacturer. I had to make some modifications to the 1997 Vortec 359 block and timing cover to make it work, but I knew that going in. I was very pleased with the fit and finish of the timing set and forsee a long life on my engine.

I gave the product a 4 star only because the lower gear(crank gear)was SO tight I had to use a bit of 400 grit sandpaper to open it up a hair. The old one moved around on the crank like it was loose, but the new one is really snug! This chain is much better quality than the old roller chain it replaced that’s for sure.

When ordering for 73 302w the options are a #7820 and use a racing 1 piece eccentric, this doesn’t work the eccentric is to near or touching the timing cover the long pin is to short to catch the thicker 1 piece eccentric.

The #7811 works with the 73 302w using 2 piece eccentric with approx 1/8″ timing cover clearance, use short pin which may be still to long 1″” is what I cut mine to or 17-18mm from face of Edelbrock camshaft.

Buy the #7811 if you want it to work, or buy the #7820 which will cause loads of fit-up problems. you’d think Edelbrock would know about this but they don’t.

If you intend to run a huge cam that needs massive springs, it would probably be better to use the racing version. But for a street car, using sane valve train components this is a good choice. It’s a true roller, which means that the rollers actually roll.

Don’t be fooled into buying a lesser chain set that has solid pins that don’t roll.

I really like this set for my mild 307 buildup with Edelbrock topend. Lighter by 2 lbs versus my oem set. this is a light duty set but high quality and tension was spot on.

Cloyes is the best. Pefect fit and true roller quality. Tight, Quiet, Confident performance.

It states it will work with a stock 302 but you have to have your thrust plate machined to accept countersunk bolts instead of hex head(I realize some 302’s have the countersunk already). This needs to have a description stating that you must use countersunk bolts on your camshaft thrust plate.

The gear machining is outstanding and the assembly fit well, replacing an OEM roller chain and gears. The indexing crank gear would be helpful for modified applications, this assembly was applied to a stock engine that will soon be rebuilt with this set going back in after the build.

Nice looks hi quality. A little harder to install than the average timing set. You have to countersink the holes on the cam retainer (easy). I had to buy a $8 countersink. I comes with a bearing to go on the back of the cam sprocket.
