20 Best Door Locks For Dementia Patients (2023 Updated)

I installed the simplisafe door lock on 11/7. Immediately I had problems with the lock. It was not working right out of the box. So I called simplisafe customer service to trouble shoot. They said it was just the lock and they would send a replacement.

So I got the replacement and installed that one on 11/12. It seemed to connect easily and was working well. I loved that I could see the lock status on the simplisafe app and didn’t need to download another app.

However, by 11/30 it was not working again. I had a dog sitter at the house since I was out of town and it stopped working while she was there. Major inconvenience. When I got home I immediately began to trouble shoot and did all the same things that customer service had me do the first time.

No luck. The base station couldn’t connect with the lock and the keypad was showing an error saying it couldn’t calibrate the lock. So I called customer service again. She had me walk through all the same steps.

Resetting my system. Checking for updates (which they informed me if the system needed updating the lock would not work. So if the system doesn’t update on its own you’re locked out of your door?!). The lock finally connected.

the customer service rep said if it happened again they would send a new base station. Everything else in my security system works and connects fine to the base station so thats not the problem. When googling my problem there are a lot of other people reporting similar issues.

I’m returning the lock and purchasing the Yale smart lock. this is an inferior product in a market with many other options.

We already had a basic SimpliSafe system at our home and I was excited to add the SmartLock to our system. My husband installed and I was surprised how unintrusive the Smart Lock is. I thought it would involve a major change to our door and lock.

However, we can still use our current key and lock. It just installed over what we had. He did not drill or take anything off our door. As for how it works, we do not use our front door on a daily basis as a way to get in and out of our home (we go in through the garage) so I cannot speak to how it holds up to multiple uses everyday, but I like that I do not have to give service people or the dog sitter a key or leave the door unlocked for them, and that friends and family can get in without a key if we are not home.

I also have a way into the house without a key if I ever lock myself out somehow. which has happened before. I get alerts whenever the door is locked or unlocked. It may be annoying if you are using the door a lot, but for my purposes it is helpful.

I can also make sure the door is locked at any time so that our small child cannot open the door.

I was a little nervous about installing this but after downloading the app, there’s some nice visuals that walk you thru the process and it’s honestly painless – I have some experience with installing “dumb” locks and I have some experience with smart locks, having previously owned a Schlage Sense, but I was excited to try this out because the Schlage was honestly a pain to install and remove when moving.

Nonetheless, got everything installed and I was “calibrating the lock” when I discovered the first flaw. The motor is not powerful enough to turn the deadbolt if there’s even the slightest bit of resistance.

In other words, in my apartment, it’s new construction and the buildings settled some since then so you have to give the door a little extra push with this lock – a normal lock the deadbolt engages in a way where this isn’t necessary because the force of you manipulating the deadbolt with a key just means you give the lock a little more wrist action and it fixes itself.

So after discovering this flaw I found that the lock works – in the sense of – there’s a longer and shorter deadbolt bit and the default one engaged in a way where the door was successfully locking just not via the app.

So already I was tossing up the idea of – okay it comes with a key, but then it’s like that kills the whole smart lock concept completely and a dumb lock is significantly cheaper than this $300+ one.

So I decide to go ahead and take it down and I go to unlock the door when the door refuses to open. I quickly discovered a severe second flaw with this lock. The deadbolt is essentially a twist on/twist off and it houses the battery and there’s a little spring in there – so essentially you push down and rotate the piece with the Level logo and essentially that “locks” the battery in place; however, somehow the battery and the cage sprang out and the battery lodged itself in between the lock and the door frame – so effectively I was locked inside my apartment.

On the third floor. My only way in/out. So trying not to panic I thought fast and started disassembling the lock – it DOES seem like some thought was put into this as the motor piece can be removed from the deadbolt – however third flaw, there’s no way to “grip” or “grab” the motor piece once you unscrew it as everything is really tight in that little door cut out hole.

So after about 30 minutes of using a screw driver to try to push the battery back into the deadbolt and it popping out because of the spring, I finally wedged the screw driver into the door frame and used a putty knife to push the battery the other way and eventually the door popped open and I immediately removed this lock.

I say all that to say I was very fortunate that this happened while I was inside. Had this happened when you’re outside (especially in my scenario, third floor only entry/exit) you would’ve likely had to break the door down to gain entry because even with the key the issue was not the deadbolt itself – it was actually disabled -it was the battery got caught half in the deadbolt half in the door frame and there’s just enough of a gap where this really could’ve been a lot worse.

For reference the cap that attaches into the end of the battery is a magnet and that part was also lodged into the part of the frame where the deadbolt engages which is the other reason the door got jammed the way it did.

I reached out to support to see if this is a defect or if they’d be willing to replace the lock, but we’ll wait and see what happens. Brief note from using the app – the lock/unlock functionality is not very intuitive.

I kept looking for how you use your phone to send the command (it turns out you press and hold on the Level logo) – after a while a popup came up informing me of that. Similarly, there’s no clear instructions on how to program the NFC cards and I finally figured out lay it on the counter and touch the phone to it but it was very picky about how – i.

e. when I tapped the phone on it sideways I got a popup about a bad read. Maybe putting a little icon on these to indicate this would be nice. In summary, it is a quality product as evidenced by the build quality — there’s definitely some areas of improvement so I give it fair marks for value and it was easy to install although there’s some work that can be done in the app and with evaluating some of these flaws so fair marks for that.

Considering I got locked inside my apartment, obviously wouldn’t recommend it to my friend.

Smart home products like smart locks are support to make your life easier and be intuitive. Unfortunately this product is neither. All but once has my lock failed to unlock by coming home and “tapping” it.

Every time I have to open the app (it’s running in the background with background app refresh enabled and location set to always) before the “tap” feature works. Quick note on the tap feature, most would consider a tap to be just that a.

5 second tap, but Level’s version of tap is hold your finger on the lock for 2 seconds… I am also really not a fan of how defined the use of this lock and app is. You cannot change the geofence size, so if you live in an apartment complex hope you can get to your unit in time, a 200m geofence is quite large.

The ability to only use the tap to unlock within a couple minutes of entering the geofence and then not again until you leave and return is quite dumb, so if you leave your house without leaving the geofence you have to unlock your door using another method other than tap… given that the NFC cards are flakey at best and how long it takes the app or HomeKit to unlock the lock it is easier and quicker to use the physical key which defeats the purpose of a smart lock.

I really want to like this lock, it is well engineered and looks nice. But it lacks in features, the features is does have are unreliable or gimped, and if the cylinder even slightly rubs against the door frame (like most locks do) then it will constantly complain about being jammed.

This product has so much potential but I feel that without some reliability improvements, software updates, and new features this lock will continue to fall short of what is to be expected from a $300+ lock (level touch).

Last thing, this lock has a NFC reader built in, it is practicaly begging for Apple Homekey support, but alas this is not a feature….

This lock is almost perfect especially if you’re moving into a new home like me. New lock and new keys gives you a piece of mind. Screw provided are long and provide excellent strength as well as a strike plate.

The installation was a breeze and the only difficulty I had was removing the old screws. Comparing to the August smart lock: The Level app itself is simple and easy to use, but you have to be within bluetooth range in order to unlock and lock the door.

The other issue that could be solved is an audit log. The august lock wins both these categories by default. However, the battery life and ease of installation go to the Level. The overall appearance of the level lock is as stealthy as it gets.

You wouldn’t be able to tell that a smart lock is there. Changing batteries is also a breeze. Overall, I live with housemates and need to know when someone doesn’t close the door properly and having 3 staircases and thick walls means bluetooth just isn’t as viable unless you’re within the 1st floor.

I’d recommend this to anyone that lives in an apartment or a smaller home where bluetooth range is more accessable.

Unser Nuki ging nach 4 Jahren kaputt. Grundsätzlich waren wir aber auch damit sehr zufrieden. Das Linus Schloss bietet aber einige Verbesserungen: – sehr leise. Das Nuki ist extrem laut – komplett aus Metall, während bei Nuki alles aus Plastik ist.

Ein Wunder, dass der Batteriedeckel bei unserem Nuki nie kaputt gegangen ist. – Apropos Batterieabdeckung: diese ist beim Linus hervorragend gelöst! – Innen normal von Hand bedienbar. Die Position wird sehr zuverlässig erkannt.

Dieser hat eine ähnlich schlechte Bluetooth Stärke wie der von Nuki, leider. Allerdings schliesst er das Schloss sehr viel schneller auf, während man bei Nuki schonmal 10 Sekunden wartet (oder auch vergeblich, häufig hat das gar nicht funktioniert – beim Schloss steht dann „offline“) Auch das Keypad ist hochwertiger beim Linus und der Tastendruck ist deutlich spürbar.

Zudem reagiert es sofort, während man bei Nuki teils mehrere Sekunden lang warten musste. Geofencing funktioniert ebenfalls perfekt und meiner Meinung nach zuverlässiger als beim Nuki. Die Yale app ist übersichtlicher und einfacher gestaltet, funktioniert aber top.

Das Linus funktioniert auch mit Bosch Smarthome. Ich hatte bei Nuki nicht viel vermisst, aber nach einem Monat mit dem Linus muss ich klar sagen: es ist das bessere Schloss.

So full disclosure, I had really high expectations for this lock because I owned the original Wyze Lock. For the purposes of this review, that’s what I am comparing this to. I feel when compared the original, there are essentially 3 things you’re giving up simply for the fingerprint scanner.

First off, I love this new lock. I like that I can have multiple users’ fingerprints added as we have family that come over often and giving them all keys kind of asks for them to be lost. They had codes before but now it’s even easier.

While we’re on the topic of the fingerprint reader, its FAST. Faster than most phones which is nice for when you’re out for a walk. It’s gone from fiddling around for a key, to entering a code (original wyze lock), to just tapping my finger.

Overall, this lock is fantastic but there are 2 things missing, one of which almost feels like a deal breaker. The original Wyze lock knew when it was open, so if we left the door open, we could set it up to make a racket if it’s open longer than 30 minutes.

Great for keeping everyone mindful of heating/cooling. This lock, despite being more expensive, does NOT know when it’s open. This causes trouble with the auto lock and honestly makes me wonder why it’s omitted because my assumption would be that they had a compass in the original and I know it would have added to the price, but I mean, I think that’s a pretty important feature.

The other feature missing is more a function of the design and I get why they did this so all I’ll say is that it does suck not having notifications from this thing. Like when someone unlocks the door or what have you.

It’s less of a big deal since we have the doorbell (also from wyze) but just thought I’d point it out. The last thing is what I consider to be a bit of a deal breaker and the reason it’s 3 stars and not 4.

I utilize the “auto lock” feature because I’m forgetful and the people in my house are forgetful. We’ve had the original lock for about a year, and it ALWAYS locks and will ALWAYS alert us if there is a problem with it auto locking.

On this lock I have auto lock on from 8PM until 8AM, it’s nice that you can schedule it but let me ask. What’s the point of being able to schedule it, if it doesn’t lock? It only seems to work if you open the door and close it between those times.

If you go for a walk at 6 and don’t lock the door when you get back, at 8 when the auto lock is supposed to be on it WILL NOT LOCK. This is a security product and if you set the expectation that your door will lock itself and will always be locked, then you need to make sure that you do it.

It’s a matter of safety more so than your other products. I will finish this off by saying, I love Wyze (even though they wont get me in their beta despite owning almost their entire product lineup) but this one was kind of a bummer to me.

Very impressed with the design thinking behind this product. I feel more comfortable from a security perspective with the Wyze Lock Bolt only accessible via Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Simple to install, design looks good.

Love the functionality. I can set it to auto-lock after a certain time period (5 minutes) which ensure the door is always locked at bedtime, no need to check it. When in Bluetooth range, the app allows for personalized setup for fingerprint and PIN code access by person, and then I can receive alerts and track who is coming in when.

The fingerprint sensor is great, no need to carry keys or a phone for gaining access to the house when going for a walk. The only issue I have noted so far is very minor, and that is if the door is left open past the auto-lock timeout, the bolt will extend when the door is open, so something I need to be conscious of if that is the case to prevent trying to close the door with the bolt extended and possibly damaging door trim.

Not sure how the lock could tell if the door is open or not, so this is not a big concern and of course this feature can be turned off if really an issue. Does not integrate with WiFi or voice assistants, but for this particular use case related to security, this is actually a pro and not a con.

All in all, very happy with the price for what this lock delivers and so far has been very reliable. Once again, great work Wyze!.

I really wanted to have a door that could be opened without a key. The ones I kept finding used your phone to auto unlock or lock. I really did not like that idea and just wanted something that could use a code.

This is a very basic but I love it! It was easy to attach to my door and setup in the app. I was able to share the lock with my partner through the app. We each have our own four digit pin along with finger print ID.

I currently have this on our back patio door as its a covered area and I figured it would be a good spot to have this lock. The great thing is the door does lock after 10 or 15 minutes and the finger print reader works perfectly.

When the door cannot lock (door not fully shut), the lock will try a few times to complete the lock series and when it cannot it will beep a few times. The downside, when the lock cannot lock it only beeps a few times but I really wish it would notify me via my phone.

Second, I wish you could schedule times for when the door would auto lock. During the day we come and go out the patio door and it would be nice to have it just stay unlocked all day, then at 10PM it would go back to the auto lock feature.

This is honestly the only bad thing I really have to say about it, but if I put this on a garage door it really wouldn’t be an issue. You can also schedule four digit codes for guest to use to get into the house.

You do not need to be connected to the lock and you can be anywhere you have internet. This is great for when a friend needs to come over and check on your house or you need to let someone in and you are not around.

I’m debating on getting a second one for our garage door since we really like this one a lot. I would recommend this lock if you just need something basic or you do not want one that auto unlocks like the other wyze lock.

This is my second smart lock and I was hoping for a big step up from my old Yale which has only a touch screen, no internet or bluetooth, and was a pain to install. The first thing I liked about the Lockly was the straightforward installation with an excellent printed booklet which made it a breeze.

It fitted my existing door with zero modification. I was annoyed by the lack of dimensions in the specifications (not just PBTech, but anywhere) which resulted in one side of the lock slightly overlapping a panel in the door, and looking a bit ugly.

Software setup with the Android app was unnecessarily complex and confusing but at least it’s not buggy and all worked in the end. It was necessary to create an account with Lockly and supply an email address and phone number to yet another company which I find intrusive.

Before long I expect to be redirecting their emails to the spam folder. Everyone I sent an invite to (to give them an unlock code) mentioned it being a bit convoluted. I’m a professional software developer and recognise clumsy software when I see it.

There are multiple types of user (admin, one-time, fingerprint, etc) and an offline setup which allows a code to be sent to someone without being connected to the lock but it’s also unintuitive and the user needs to enter two six-digit codes on a touch screen where the numbers move around randomly.

Ok for letting the plumber in when you’re away but he’ll be tearing his hair out. The fingerprint sensor works well but needs a few tries sometimes. There’s a nice log of all entries saying how and which fingerprint was used, but not who unless you unlock using a PIN on the touch screen.

Hint: When storing a fingerprint, name it for the person, which hand, and which finger. I didn’t require the WiFi bridge, so I need to be in Bluetooth range to use the app. The range seems ok, though it randomly says it’s disconnected but still works.

You can lock and unlock from the app, see the current status, view logs, and set up users but obviously this works only while connected. So, the Lockly Secure Plus for me is kind of average, but it does the job and it has a good secure feel about it – though when spending this much, I’d expect something a bit more polished.

First of all, the finger print scanner is designed for left-hand doors only as it’s positioned on the right hand side of the device. I have a right-hand door and I can’t use the finger print as there is not enough clearance between the scanner and the door frame, plus I have a security screen door which makes it even harder.

If Lockly had a little a bit more of common sense they would have placed the finger print scanner on the front of the unit which would have made it suitable for both scenarios. Secondly, the unit is quite bulky and now I can’t close my security screen door – I’ll have to try and find some sort of trim/spacer to be able to create the necessary clearance which will be a pain in the neck.

Thirdly, the app quite often fails to perform even simple operations such as changing an user’s pin number despite the fact that I was standing close to the lock and connected via Bluetooth rather than wifi.

Last but not least, the wifi module ‘Secure Link’ which costs a fortune has the cheapest and nastiest wifi receivers I’ve ever seen for a device priced at over a hundred dollars. Essentially, it won’t work if your available power point is over 3 meters /10ft away.

Who on earth has a power point by their front door? This device should have a range of at least 9 meters/30ft like most Bluetooth devices. Plus, your modem/router better have a pretty good range as Lockly recommend that you need to have the Secure Link close to it too.

Not to mention that the notification that I get on my phone have are very laggy even when I am at home within my local network. Overall, the unit has a solid build and the tech behind it is great. I just cannot be bothered taking it back to Bunnings so I’ll just bite the bullet and leave it as is otherwise I’d be buying another one like Schlage Encode which in fact is compatible with most home automation platforms (as far I am aware Lockly isn’t).

Oh, nearly forgot to mention that I had to buy a Lockly back plate to cover the hole from my original deadbolt – Now, if the unit is clearly big as it is and most people will most likely have to remove their deadbolt like I did then why don’t they ship this with the lock?.

Bought this lock to replace a previous fingerprint lock where the fingerprint sensor started behaving erratically. Firstly, the product comes across as great quality – from the packaging to the fixings and the lock itself.

Installation was easy and instructions were spot-on. They even included spares (in case you loose or damage a part in the installation process). The fingerprint reader is top-notch. No failed reading attempts to date.

It just works – for the whole family. The access code method, with pin-genie, is clever and works well. I found the app very useful, especially the ability to create offline access codes or eBadge (where others can access the lock using the app when within bluetooth range).

You can also set validity of the eBadge. I chose not to add the WiFi link module since I do not like the idea of having the door lock connected to the internet. Altogether really happy with this purchase.

I used a 3rd party service tech through Best Buy to instal the lock and it definitely took longer than it should have. This is not entirely a fault of the tech or the lock because my door has been challenging in general.

However, when it comes to the motor, I am a little disappointed with how loose the lock has to be in order for the motor to function correctly. It requires minimal resistance or it will cause an error message and the lock will not function.

It has failed on me during one occasion where I wasn’t able to get into my house. I’ve been paranoid about leaving my keys ever since. However, that has not happened again so I’m hopeful it was a one off.

In general, if this lock functions for your use case I would recommend it. I love the auto lock functionality. That said, if you’re planning to leave for an extended period of time I would still double check it was locked correctly.

Fortunately the auto lock function has yet to fail me.

Lock was easy to install and works perfectly. As for durability that is unknown as I just purchased. Shipping was very quick. Instructions are a little vague but I figured the settings out. Depending on durability I would recommend this lock.

I have a smart deadbolt I got for my front door and liked the ability to go out with out my keys so much that I decided to upgrade my side door as well. One thing I didn’t like about the other brand I had is that it doesn’t seem to line up perfectly and the door doesn’t always unlock right unless you put pressure on the door as you use the deadbolt.

This setup doesn’t replace your whole lock, so it is better/easier to install. Installation took around an hour, but I also got the keyless pad so that was part of the reason. My install location didn’t really have a good place for the keypad so it took a bit to install.

Operation of the lock is easy and smooth. I only really cared about the keyless entry but I’m liking all the smart features. I especially like the ability to manage everything, including the lock status without going to the door.

Our side door is in the garage and its nice to not have to walk all the way out there to check if it is locked. I do use the auto-lock feature, but my kids don’t always shut the door properly, so it can’t lock itself if the door isn’t fully closed.

This lets me verify everything quickly and easily. I really like how thoughtful the developers were and created things like “trash mode” so that you can set up an autolock feature and still do quick things around the house without worrying about getting locked out accidentally.

The geofencing feature is convenient so I don’t have to pull out my phone or type in a code, but since I do have the keypad, its less necessary. My biggest complaint for the device is the gateway. I understand why they have one and the additional features they can have because of it, but it wasn’t convenient to find an outlet that wasn’t already in use that was close enough to the door to get a clear signal.

I found that the connection was a little week between the door and the gateway so it really had to be pretty close. Since this was on a garage side door, my options were a bit more limited. Overall I like this unit and would recommend it to a friend.

I’ve been looking to get a smart door lock for my place but was a bit leery or not interested in having to switch keys for my locks. I found out that this lock didn’t require changing out any keys and would work with your existing deadbolt so I figured this would be a great alternative.

I now know there are a few other brands that make locks like this where you don’t need to switch out keys so that’s a good thing as well. Installation is pretty simple and straightforward. When you download the companion app, it’ll walk you through installing and configuring the lock.

Once you plug in the gateway, it’s pretty much unscrewing the bolts on your deadbolt and letting the app configure everything else. Simple and all you really need is a screwdriver to complete the installation.

Once setup, there are some settings you’ll want to update. This has an auto-lock feature that can be either setup to lock once the door closes or after a certain period of time. There is also a geofence option where it’ll lock once you leave a certain radius from your home.

I’d suggest updating the notifications first as getting an alert everytime the door is locked/unlocked can get kind of annoying. After setting everything up, I think I got this to where I need it to be.

A couple things I noticed; With this installed, I can’t unlock the deadbolt with my key anymore. Not sure if this is intended but it’s kind of a potential issue should the batteries in the lock die or I misplace my phone or something.

Also, the deadbolt adapters are plastic and fit inside the metal gear that unlocks/locks the bolt. Considering it’s metal against plastic, overtime there may be some wear and tear issues that occur. Would’ve liked to have seen the adapters made of metal or even a plastic adapter with a metal housing just to limit any issues with wear and tear.

Overall though, really nice pickup if you want to smarten up your home.

Recently bought a home that had a hornbill smart lock. This lock was missing the battery cover, simple enough right. I contacted customer service, after many emails of back and forth ( Ofcourse there is no human phone customer service) Blair refuses to send me a replacement, but sends a link on Amazon to replacement as they can’t confirm it is their product ( this is after sending photos etc).

Unclear why or how a picture of a hornbill lock doesn’t suffice. Blair sure found that Amazon link quickly however. Thank you for wasting my time, if you refused to replace your product parts you could have just said that in the beginning.

I love this lock. It was easy to install and customer service was available to help if I had any questions. I did a lot research and this is an excellent price point for a great product. I love the app, and can customize preferences to my liking.

No more locking myself out of the house and having to drive to my parents house for my spare key.

I spent a lot of time looking for the right gate lock — that workers could use without a key. keep open on the inside, but keep locked on the outside, and easily lock behind them when they leave for the day.

This MECHANICAL lock does it all. It’s EASY to set up Gives me more SECURITY, knowing that it is truly locked when people leave.

works great for our new 6′ steel mesh fence; with auto-close hinges this makes for a convenient pool entrance, and the passage feature is great for when we are hosting guests.

I love these! I have had them for years now. I just put another one on today. So I own 3 now. If the molding gets in the way you just shave it down with a dremel or chisel. On my two pictures you can see it open and closed on the other.

I Did have to use my dremel to get the molding down low enough so that I could shut the door. Otherwise it was hitting the door guardian when I would go to shut it. But look! It looks fine and normal! I only trimmed where the plate of the door guardian would go, no where else.

So it’s only in the frame. You might notice the trim down once you opened the door. You might have to be somewhat handy if it doesn’t line up right away. I know how to use basic tools though, so I got it on with just a little extra effort.

It keeps my kids safe because they do not know how to open it even though they see me doing it. They are 5 and 7, but also I have to show all adults too because they can’t figure it out either. Really it’s easy once you explain you pull toward the door, like sideways and then swing out.

If the door is unlocked while the door guardian is on then it will not budge. You can pull and pull and it wont matter. I really love these and will always recommend them.

Awesome lock when you finally get through the setup. However, there are many issues you can encounter during setup that will hamper your efforts and maybe even result in you getting a refund. In my particular experience, I wanted to use it with Apple HomeKit.

It is important to understand that Apple HomeKit relies on a good Bluetooth connection with an Apple HomeKit Hub. If your hub is too far away, it’s not going to be stable experience. However if you only intend to use the August App, it relies on your wifi connection (and could very well save you if your HomeKit fails you).

But never ever leave home without your keys because that’s when the lock will fail you. It is also important to understand that if you have a fancy new modem or modem/router combination that has both wifi bands on a single SSID (meaning it decides which device uses 2.

4 or 5. 4), you might have some trouble. The lock only works on 2. 4, and your router may not be able to figure that out. Therefore I highly recommend splitting 2. 4 and 5. 4 into separate SSIDs and using the 2.

4 for your setup. If your modem or modem / router combination can’t do that, it may be time to replace it. Additionally, if your lock needs a firmware update (and it probably will), I highly recommend a factory reseting right after.

There are situations in which the lock doesn’t work right after a firmware update unless you factory reset it. Trust me…. just factory reset it after the firmware update and you’ll save some headaches.

I would also like to point out that resetting you Apple account password during Apple HomeKit setup is a bad idea. It can cause some additional problems. Work out your password issues before you setup this lock.

I would also like to point out that if this lock goes through batteries like candy, you probably didn’t install it properly. During installation, it’s super important that the mount plate be perfectly centered with the shaft of the deadbolt.

If the deadbolt doesn’t turn smooth and easy, recenter it and try again. You’ll be glad you spent 20 minutes on this step when you don’t have to cash out for batteries every time you hit the grocery store.

It really is great hardware design but a few issues really annoy me to the point I’ll replace this soon (thought I could live with it at first, 8 mos later I can’t): 1) even though it is RIGHT next to my 2.

4ghz router that also supports ALL WiFi bands and has no problems with anything else, it always complains of disconnecting and connecting to WiFi. So I won’t always know when it’s locked or unlocked when I’m away or be able to add codes or remove codes.

2) that problem creates another problem: incredible battery drain. I’m literally spending ten dollars every three weeks buying 2x CR123s (not to mention throwing nasty metals into landfills unnecessarily).

3) the app is horrible. In looks and function. Looks basic 2012 which is ok I guess, but it doesn’t integrate well with HomeKit or the Apple ecosystem if that matters to you. It’s supposed to unlock with Siri or home automations but it doesn’t do that reliably.

It either takes 2-3 min (standing outside waiting is lame) or just doesn’t work and fails. Technically it’s supported. Functionally, it’s useless. 4) the idea of the alignment or door ajar sensor is great.

It doesn’t work in reality. I’m an electrical and computer engineer who has and buys enough tools to make my wife want to divorce me 10x over: if I am following the directions and it’s not working (it was installed using jigs and measurement equipment with calibration for semiconductor work, so into the thousands of a mm…): it is not a well designed product and the casual installer is not going to get it right often IMO, if it is even about that.

I suspect the magnet used for this is just not properly specced no matter how well you install it.

I’ve had this lock for 6 months now which really is what is needed for a product like this to review. I have it connected on the 2. 4 WIFI of a Unifi access point and it communicates great as long as I only want to control it with my phone.

As I do not have any apple devices that stay at my house I can not connect it to Homekit and control it locally everything has to go to their cloud service then back for control even on the same network.

Their Home-kit connection is Bluetooth only so the apple device has to be close to the lock permanently. Because of this constant back and fourth the wifi card is constantly pinging their cloud service causing the batteries to drain much faster than they should.

6 months and 2 sets of batteries and they are the special CR123A batteries. Not sure if the Bridge would help solve this issue but wasting money on batteries is not fun. The app also doesn’t give you the battery level until it tells you that the batteries are almost dead which isn’t helpful because you can’t keep track of any information as to what could be causing the issue.

If you use Home Assistant to automate your home this lock isn’t for you. Ever since August updated the way you log into their website to control the lock or get information about it Home Assistant can’t log in or wont stay connected.

The bigger pro version that is Z-wave ready might be better but I wouldn’t go with this one again.

I would buy again. This product can be used along side with your existing hardware which i did because i wanted to keep my original handle/style. So in my installation i used the key-less lock for the top portion (the deadbolt), but re-used my original front or bottom handles (front and back) because the original one had the same color match as the new hardware.

So in my case i only used the deadbolt or top hardware.

Good quality, fairly easy to install. The directions werent the best but adequate to get the job done. Overall for the price. I did have some trouble programming but was able to figure it out.

I just installed this dead bolt and door knob and I love it. It was very simple to install and everything turns so easily. I’m very happy with this product.

My only regret is not getting this sooner. The lock was simple to install and took maybe 15 minutes including taking out the old lock. This will make life so much easier, no more standing in the rain or coke looking through keys to find the right key or trying to hold our phones flashlight to see the keyhole because the pad on this lights up which is super convenient, and I was always having to sit things I was carrying in down to try to find my key and my daughter would struggle with getting the key in the hole to unlock the door herself.

I think everyone needs one. In emergencies if you have pets or things that need taken care of at home you don’t have to worry about hiding a key or someone looking for a hidden key to get into your house you can simply give the code to someone you trust and they can take care of your house if needed in a last minute situation if one arises.

I really recommend this lock. I would purchase again hands down for the convenience and peace of mind.

Very impressed with how solid and sturdy this set is. It was as easy to install as a regular doorknob too. It has tons of cool features, like 20 different access codes for me to give to my friends and family to use.

But my favorite is the ability to set a temporary passcode that will be able to be used once and never again. So now, when the cleaners need access, I can text her a password, that will only work the one time.

You can also hold down any one of the keys for a few seconds and it will automatically lock the door. Super nice! Very good price, highly recommend this lock.

We have this installed so that the kids can get in and out of the house easier through the garage on their own pre-teens. It took about 15 minutes to remove our current lock now, and only 10 minutes to install it.

The only downside of the password setup is absolute cannot put the same number in a row, eg, no 611278 for example. Really not a deal-breaker, not would just like to point it out. The one-time guest pass is great.

You can preset that for the just in case any time in the future, and it will delete that on its own. I do wish the auto-lock feature can be set to a fix time in the day instead of 30 seconds since opening, but also works well as expected.

I loved this product but it didn’t fit my front door, I measured incorrectly but a really greatproduct.

I have had this Kwikset 916 Smartcode deadbolt for two years and it has failed. There’s only a one year warranty on electronics, so consider yourself lucky if you get more than one year’s use from this inferior product.

I went through all of the trouble shooting and finally called tech support. After they walked me through trouble shooting which didn’t fix it, they said there’s nothing they could do and reminded me about the one year warranty on electronics.

There’s a two year warranty on mechanical parts and a lifetime warranty on the finish. A lot that does if the electronics don’t operate the lock. The finish looks great though ):

Purchased the Z Wave version since we were looking for a smart lock for our garage entry door that also integrates with our Ring alarm for automatic alarm arming/disarming. Installation was pretty simple and straightforward, but this is a new house thats only been lived in for four months though so door alignment is still pretty pristine.

Older doors may have a bit more trouble, but hey, thats true with any handle. After installation and master code programming, was able to put it into pairing mode and add to the ring alarm in less than a minute, but heres where the one issue I had popped up.

On our front door, we have a Schlage Encode deadbolt that is also tied into our ring alarm. To lock the door, we can either press the Schlage logo to lock without arming the alarm when someone else is home, or enter in one of our codes to lock the door and arm the alarm.

The Yale lever technically can do both of these things, but after some hunting around online I found out that it can NOT do these at the same time. If you use the one-touch lock feature (enabled by default), then ANY button on the face locks the door immediately, so theres no way to lock via code.

If you want the ability to arm the alarm via code entry, you need to disable one-touch locking and then just lock from the inside thumb-turn before closing the door. Its not a HUGE problem since we really dont lock that door when were not going to arm the alarm anyway, but a bit of a disappointment and it would have been nice if the restriction was more clear in any of the product manuals.

I was very happy with this lock, especially because it does not have any key hole. No one can get in or pick the lock to open it without the code! If someone tries to brake it off – it has the siren that will start to sound! How cool! And if batteries are dead you can simply recharge it from outside attaching the 9V to it, but still need the code to get it open, so pick the master code that you will always remember.

Also, it does have a low battery power warning light, so you do not have to wait until they totally dead. When I got the lock, I did not realized at first that I was installing the dead bolt upside down inside the door, so my new lock did not fit too well.

After I took it out and placed the dead bolt correct side up, the rest of installation went easy.

Works as expected. The sounds it makes are easy to interpret; for example, if the door isn’t closed all the way when engaging the lock, the sound it makes while locking is easy to notice, but it’s not annoying.

I’ve had the unit installed for about 6 months now, and have used it for kids, contractors, friends, and the ease of use to issue or cancel a code is simple. I appreciate a unit where I can set the number of characters in the code.

I prefer a 5 or 6 digit code over a 4 digit code. I recommend this product based on my use and observations.
