14 Best Dark Horse Star Wars Comics (2023 Updated)

A good read, but some mistakes throughout. If Darth Vader is one of favorite characters I would recommend this book for you.

*Spoiler Alert* As Star Wars books go, this one is pretty good. The story begins shortly after the point at which the film (Episode III, Revenge of the Sith) leaves off. My primary problem with it is that while Vader is obsessed with exterminating the Jedi, Sidious considers their threat negligible.

That’s not really in keeping with what we see in Episode III. Vader’s motivation would make a lot more sense to me if his fervor for hunting the Jedi was born of a need to vicariously take revenge on Obi-Wan.

Still, the characters of the surviving Jedi are well-drawn, and the movies’ secondary characters, particularly that of Bail Organa, are wholly authentic. Vader’s point of view regarding his handicapped condition and his psychological transitions into life as a Sith are well written.

The events flow and fit together well, and Roan Shryne (the book’s true protagonist, in spite of the title) is a likable and believable character. Overall, a good interpretation of the Star Wars universe that generally fits well into the milieu of the films.

Luceno focuses on details such as the limitations of Vaders body suit, a necessity brought forth by his defeat at the hands of his brother and old Master Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. Other topics, such as the adjustment to his light saber technique to his very manner of walking are also discussed.

This whole series is amazing. Thrawn is an awesome strategist, there’s a crazy dark jedi and there’s just tons of interlocking story. Great characters, planets and everything. Definitely one of the best star wars series.

Great book, excellent trilogy, one of the best I have ever read. Timothy Zahn is a great Star Wars writer. I would not be afraid to read any of his books.

Did you ever hearthe Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise? I thought not. It’s not a storythe Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life.

He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful.

the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It’s ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.

Although this book is in the “Legends” of Star Wars the connection to the Star Wars Universe is strong! Learning more about Darth Plagueis fills in gaps that have not yet been written. James Luceno’s writing creates vivid images and brings a level of connection to characters in an entirely new way.

I truly felt a heart pounding need to see where the story went, despite knowing the outcome via the movies. A must have must read for any Star Wars fan.

I have heard about this book and the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise and what happened to him. So I had to buy it to read for myself. Loving it so far.

My oldest who is 11 is a Star Wars fanatic and absolutely loves the Star Wars Clone Wars series books! He never wants to put them down!

Found this book or very similar book on Amazon for my son and he loves it. My 2 older sons are big fan of start wars. Great buy.

If you are a Star Wars nerd you will like the Thrawn series. Timothy Zahn does a good job of continually convincing me that various characters and the new republic are doomed only for them to find a way out in the next chapter 🙂 The used book was in a condition I would expect for $4.

Perfectly readable just a little bent up.

The final installment in the Thrawn trilogy with Zahn’s conclusion doing supreme justice to the greatest character I have come across in the Star Wars universe in Grand Admiral Thrawn. The entire trilogy has been a pleasure to read as is Zahn’s impressive attention to detail when it comes to the scientific and technological principals of this universe.

The author’s own personal care for creating a genuine Star Wars adventure is clearly evident and when backed up by an antagonist this compelling how could you not love this tale.

The way the Star Wars sequels should have been. Love these books. The feeling is just right and the characters behave the way you think they should while at the same time moving them along into new developments.

Jeffrey Brown has written some really good kids’ stories around the padawan Jedi Roan Novachez character, but this series of books “Darth Vader and. ” are not story books! They contain a series one-to-two-page comedy comic sketches that follow a theme, but there’s no continuous story or dialogue linking them.

They are probably not as appealing to children as they are to adults who will understand the “in jokes” and references to the original Star Wars movies, which a lot of youngsters will not have seen. Good fun, but not story books for young children!.

Even if you’re just a casual Star Wars fan, I’d still highly recommend this book starting a new adventure that takes place 5 years after Return of the Jedi. It marvelously builds on the events of the original trilogy and introduces a handful of excellent new characters that I fell in love with right off.

The established cast is wonderfully in character, so I could just hear their voices and see their faces as I read. The captivating story drew me in and honorably continues this legendary adventure in a galaxy far far away.

This book single handedly revamped Star Wars upon release. I have since followed every subsequent (SW) release by Zahn, and it opened me up to reading other Star Wars novels. The main Character, Thrawn, is the only character Disney took from the once canon turned “legends” and brought them back to canon.

Thrawn is one of the very best characters Star Wars has to offer.

This js the the Trilogy that should have been! I originally read this trilogy when it first came out, roughly a quarter of a century ago. I enjoyed it then (in my early twenties) and are enjoying it again.

Dont want to upset anyone, but for me this first volume at least is so much better than ‘The Force Awakens’, which I personally hated. If this trilogy had been made back then, we could have had a young-ish Luke, Leia, and Han still in episodes 7,8 and 9.

Instead, they left it too long! Now we have lost our precious princess, Han is dead, and Luke looks like nothing but a Obi-Wan Kenobi style hermit! Wish these books had been made instead! Still, like I said before, just my opinion.

If you prefer ‘The Force Awakens’, fair enough!.

For those Star Wars fans of the Clone Wars series, Asajj Ventress was one of those characters whose story never really got an ending, especially after the series was cancelled. Whilst the final series of the Clone Wars released via Disney+ earlier this year (2020) may have ended the story of some characters, Ventress was sadly forgotten.

Thank the force for this book. Based on unused scripts for The Clone Wars TV series, this book delves into what happens to Ventress after she leaves behind her life as a Sith and takes up the mantle of a bounty hunter.

Joining her on the journey is Quinlan Vos; an unconventional Jedi Master who begins the story as merely her accomplice, but ends the story as much more. Over the course of this story we see the two of them develop from mere partners to an unexpected, but well written, romantic couple.

The sole downside to this book is that it is very much tied to the Clone Wars TV show, and not having knowledge of that show will make reading this hard to follow.

My son added this to his Y12 textbook order, for ‘in-between-study light relief’ – and never put it down once he started reading! Yes, he’s a die-hard Star Wars fan, but this ties in background, foreshadowing, and builds characters in the current ‘Clone Wars’ revival.

This novel was actually written based on the ‘unfinished’ episodes in the last animated Clone Wars series, before Disney bought the rights and currently releasing some of the previously started episodes.

No spoilers, but these stories revolve around Ventris (the ‘Dark Disciple’ of the title), one of the main characters – won’t say whether a ‘goodie’ or ‘baddie’! A great read to fill in the gaps and complete the unfinished series, which left many open plot-lines and raised a lot of ‘what happened’ questions.

Very entertaining, even for a novice Star Wars fan like myself.

I did not give Dark Disciple five stars because it’s a perfect book (far from it actually). I gave it five stars because of how totally and thoroughly I enjoyed it. The front cover says, “Based on unproduced episodes of The Clone Wars,” and you can tell.

You can just tell how fun these episodes were going to be if they’d been able to make them, and–having just finished the series myself–I was happy that I had this book to read to delay the goodbye process.

Now, let’s talk about things I liked: – Ventress, Dooku, and Obi-Wan are the stars of this show, and I love them all even more after reading this book. – Knowing that the mission to assassinate Dooku is a doomed one and being ready to see how badly everything is going to go.

– Learning more about Dathomir, especially through the eyes of Ventress who loves and has high-regard for her home and its people. – All the fight scenes/lightsaber fights. Enough said there. – Learning more about the Dark Side of the Force.

Always a plus. – How scary the Jedi Council are. Why are they the good guys again??? Yet, this is under Things I Like, so what does that say about me? Things I didn’t like: -Did not care much for Vos.

He had his moments certainly, but as a whole, he’s definitely not a favorite character. – The romance between Vos and Ventress. I was so ready to love this, but it was not written very well. It was too quickly paced, a little too insta-love, and Vos wasn’t even the entire problem.

How Ventress came to love him and acted around him seemed very OOC. – The weird “is he or isn’t he dark side” thing was very sloppy and confusing. – That ending. I completely reject it, and it didn’t happen.

“But, Melody, it’s canon!” No, it is not. Get it away from me. So yeah, I definitely have a love/hate relationship with this book, but the good things outweighed the bad, and I had a great time with it.

An emotional rollercoaster for sure.

If you are a fan of Star Wars you will love this book. Charles Soule is a wonderful writer, he has worked in countless comic books for Star Wars and knocked everyone out the park. This is no different, he really gets you hooked as you dive into the early years of the republic with so many new characters you really start to love and of course there may be a old favorite here as well.

This book really brings new light to what we already love from the movies and comic books or even novels that are canon. I know that anyone who loves Star Wars will love this book. I can’t wait for book two.

I was excited to read this, but I couldn’t even get through it. I kept reading hoping it would get better – it didn’t. There was a lot of “as you know” expository jammed into chapters. I also just found it hard to read, and I have read a lot of Star Wars novels.

Something about how much it jumps around and introduces so many worlds and characters in the first 100 pages made it not enjoyable. It didn’t build the world in a way where I felt invested. Anyway, just my opinion.

This one was definitely not for me.

Watching Vader’s descent from Jedi to Sith is incredibly compelling, and if you enjoyed how he butchered fleet troopers in Rogue One then this is for you. Furthermore, it also has interesting bits of clone trooper dialogue that provide insight into the state of the galaxy during the Empire’s earliest days.

This is a great present or a fine addition to your collection

The first book in ‘The Bane Trilogy’ is a highly detailed and appropriately written in the dark depth it should be. For those seeking the truth and history of this most powerful Sith, Darth Bane. Don’t waste your time just getting this one, you need the other two in the trilogy or you’ll be annoyed you didn’t once you finish this one and have to wait for your next order!.

I bought this for my partner who is a massive Star Wars fan. He used to enjoy reading a lot but lost his love of it. I surprised him with this which he has wanted to read for years and he hasn’t put the book down.

It’s awesome to see him so happy and enjoying reading again. He also said this is an awesome Star Wars story and any fan should give it a read.

This really opens you up to the dark side of the force without it being just about someone was evil and they wanted to be more evil. Bane, the main character is an absolute terror but the life he lived was such a struggle and is relatable to some peoples lives today.

This is a brilliant graphic novel adding to the story of Halo. First thing, Don’t buy this if your expecting to see the master chief running around facing the covenant. In this, he only has a two page cameo (I think in 343 guilty spark).

If you want to see him, try Halo Uprising. That shows him in the events after halo 2 (the space ship). This graphic novel has four individual stories writen and drawn by four diiferent writers/artists.

-#1: The Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor- This story covers the first time of the covenant meeeting the flood. It is a quite good story, showing you how the covenant felt and acted coming apon a new enemy.

They’re not just targets to point and shoot. I found the artistic style of the story more graphic than the others, in a good way. -#2: Armour Testing – This is about the testing of the spartan arnour, before the M.

C. gets it. The story shows a spartan go into a form of training to prepare the armour. The art style is a bit like some animes, I’d compare it to Halo Legends (the halo anime). -#3: Breaking Quarantine – Ever wondered what happened to Sg.

Johnson after seeing Pvt. Jenkins video of the flood ambush back in halo 1? This shows him escaping the forerunner infrastructure back on halo. This has no ‘speaking’ in the story, but there is no need for it with the great realistic style.

-#4: Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa – Last but not least, the story of New Mombassa. This is about a journalist flashing back on when the covenant first invaded Earth. It shows his story and opinion of what happened vs the portrayal of the media.

Of all the stories, this has the most cartoon-like drawing. It’s still good, but it may not be to everyones taste. Overall the presentation and quality of this novel is very nice. Under the dust jacket there is a blacked out book with a great, etched-looking spartan (i.

e. the cover, even cooler). At the rear of the novel is gallery of 20+ artists whom had been proposed to design for the halo novel. Each with a full page drawing of what they choose, some are nothing short of brilliant.

If you’re a fan of Halo, or know someone who is adicted to it. This is a great purchase, you’ll love it. 🙂 – T.

The Halo Graphic Novel is a piece of art that any fan of the fiction that surrounds the Halo universe should own. Illustrations are fun and exagerated at the same time practical. The stories that are in book are interesting and shed some light on some issues when the game was moving to fast to cover it.

Before the launch of Halo: Reach I started playing the old games again. Still hungry for more content, new content, I looked for other mediums. After devouring the novels this was my next step. Bottom line if you have an interest in great artwork and the Halo storyline, buy this Graphic Novel.
