20 Best Cycling Shorts For Heavy Riders (2023 Updated)

I received a pair of Castelli Endurance shorts that appear to have been returned by another customer. When I looked inside the shorts, there were flakes of skin on the chamois and all over the inside of the bib.

It was a bit disgusting to have paid for a brand new product that had been tried and returned, then resold. After washing them, I can say that they are a great short and the chamois Progetto Air X2 is much nicer than the Kiss Air2 chamois in my Competizione Bib Shorts.

The leg grippers are better and are a bit longer onto the knee. The material is comfortable, thick, and feels durable. No issues with the strap, and their mesh design is comfortable and helps cool quicker.

Great shorts for the money. I just wish I received a brand new pair.

Castelli has the best value for money on the market in my opinion. Best comfort at the best price. I own many other garments from Castelli. Even my Alpha Jersey from 2014 is still functioning perfectly.

I mean who has issues with the Italian brand who has a heritage dated from 1876? I always wanted a military green shorts & a pocket shorts at a fair price. I could not find any other which ticked all boxes except for the Castelli Unlimited.

I thought that the pockets would look bulky but they are sleek and almost invisible (empty). These would have costed 1. 5-2X more with other brands which claim being ‘premium’. Plus most others add cheap lacing/mesh/net like fabric in their pockets.

Castelli uses their abrasion resistant “PROTEKT” opaque fabric which is the same colour as the bib and is much finer looking ( unless you are into lingerie looking bibs). The raw cut leg ending is also super comfortable and you barely feel anything restrictive.

When using Castelli , you really see that there is care, design , R&D applied into the garment rather than massive branding and logos ( compared to others which write a paragraph selling basic breathability in a garment :)).

I’ve had these shorts in the past and also recently purchased the Bella Prima shorts which I’m very happy with. But these shorts seem to have an odd crease in the chamois that makes it ride in the crack of your bum – not very comfortable! Otherwise the chamois is fine as far as density and comfort on the bike but as soon as your butt is out of the saddle or you’re off the bike you feel this.

Had to return and sticking with Bella Prima. For those who say it runs small, keep in mind these are more of a compression short so they will feel tight; if you don’t like that feeling you might want to size up (likewise with Bella Prima).

The price on this was far better than any other company’s. I ordered it for my wife, but unfortunately got the wrong size, and the correct size was no longer available. Moosejaw made the return extremely easy and provided a refund promptly.

I have purchased from Moosejaw before and will again, because every experience has been exceptional.

I finally found a chamois that is still comfortable at 50 miles!!! I’ve given up on the big cycling brand that a lot of people use. Sadly, the chamois in the PI brand has become awful, cheap junk.

Been on 6 rides w/ these shorts averaging about 15 miles each of single track. I’m getting older(read slower) so for MTB rides on the local trails kitting up is a little over kill. I have always been a bib guy so I was a little worried about comfort.

They are comfortable & more importantly you are not thinking about them while you ride. I don’t use hydration packs so the pockets can hold phone, wallet, multi tool, & gel w/o getting in the way. The liner/pad is good but I would not recommend washing them snapped together as straps may be the weak link.

They seem true to size & there is pretty good adjustability w/ the Velcro straps. I got the yellow ones & like the color but I kind of feel like they are fading already. W/ that being said I have never put any cycling clothes in the dryer.

Always hang dry.

The shorts are nice for what they are but I have had 2 pairs and on both the zippers failed in very little time. I bought a pair and wore them maybe 5 times and the zipper on the pocket and fly broke.

REI exchanged them for another pair. Today I went out and the zipper on both side pockets would not close. I probably wore this pair at the very most 10 times. I wash them and hang dry them so I don’t think it’s me breaking the zippers.

Just be careful and if I were you spend a little more money on a different brand. You wouldn’t want to lose your car keys on the trail.

I know the product descriptions says Bib Short Triathlon UniSuits, but these are really cycling bibs that you could adapt for triathlon. I use them for cycling and they’re great.

I’m a 34″ waist and needed an XL. They ride kind of low in the back, when I wear them in the gym I feel like I’m always grabbing the back waist line to give them a pull up. For Tri shorts they should have a higher rear on them so we aren’t giving the plumbers crack to the world on the bike.

I am a happy long time user of the Louis Garneau Women’s Sprint Tri 7 Inch Shorts which have a very low profile chamois. I was hoping to try another pair of LGs that offer a more substantial chamois for rides longer than 20-30 miles.

The Neo Power shorts weren’t it for me. The chamois felt rock hard and bulky between my legs and would surely cause chafing if worn on a ride. The front of the chamois didn’t feel specific to the female anatomy and didn’t provide any cradling or comfort.

The chamois does have nice channels for ventilation. I wouldn’t swear off Louis garneau shorts altogether but any with this specific chamois just don’t work for me, although we are all built differently! These ran slightly smaller/tighter than my Sprint shorts btw.

I purchased a medium in both. I’m 5’9 130 lbs small waist, big hips, slightly large/muscular thighs. I’m usually a medium in cycling shorts. These felt good around my waist but small in the legs/thighs compared to my sprints which have less compression.

Pros: True to size, and comfortable to wear. Gel padding is great for very long rides. Thigh grips aren’t so tight they tear your skin, but don’t get weird and loose, it’s just right, I was shocked they were so comfortable.

The waist didn’t roll down on the ride either or get uncomfortable. CONS: THEY ARE 100% SEE THROUGH. Do not wear these alone and if you do make certain you’re wearing black underwear. These are NOT bike shorts, they are liners you can wear under shorts even though I was convinced they were when I shopped.

The material is thinner than the liners I actually own. You can see EVERYTHING. So beware. Other than that I 10/10 love these since they are comfortable and that gel pad will let you ride 100 miles a day in comfort.

Not flattering or necessary. A regular bib would make this great short even better.

I must say I am very pleased with this cycling pant. I saw no fitting issues with the XL pant I purchased. Really like the stair stepping sit pad in the pants and also how the thinner pad is a lot wider than my pants in the past.

It’s been several years of finding a good pant to fit this larger body. The non-draw string is not an issue with me as for others that have reviewed this pant. Also, I am pleased that the company, Aero Tech is regional to where I live and the merchandise is made in USA.

The only negative I found is I was expecting the pants to made of heavier material being an 8 panel pant. I have waited to give my review because I wanted to see how these cycling pants held up after a washing and they are fine, all intact! So, in closing I have plans in the near future to purchase another 2 pairs and hope to get a few good years of riding out of them.

The sell price is great for an eight panel riding shorts. They fit nicely, look good, and fell confortable. I’ve ridden two 20 mile rides and seem to have a little problem. It is almost like the padding should have been moved to the back about half an inch.

The rear part of the padding just cover my sit bones so that is confortable. However, the front part of the crouch area has to much material bunched up that it cause chaffing. Moving the padding back a little would give more sitting support and less material up front.

Maybe a few more rides they will feel better.

I recently bought a new Trek Verve 2 at the ripe young age of 54 to help improve my overall health. After a couple of weeks in the saddle that came with the bike, I decided I needed something between me and the seat.

Enter the Aerotech brand and the padded liner shorts. I put them on and tried them out a few times. I like the padding that helps to save my naughty bits, but it feels strange. I have noticed that I can sit in the saddle for a longer ride, and it helps with moisture wicking.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and need a little longer to evaluate before I confirm these to be a 5-star item.

These are very nice bike shorts. I got the black. The material is soft and stretchy and good for spin class! High rise and not see-thru. I went one size up for a perfect fit. Shipping was fast and great customer service.

These are the most comfortable bike shorts I’ve tried. The padding really makes a huge difference in the comfort level on the bike (I’ve worn them for indoor cycling), and the fabric is really soft and not overly compressive.

I only buy leggings and athletic bottoms that have side pockets for my phone, so I am thrilled that these shorts have two good-sized pockets. The padding, though, sets these apart! Really good.

So happy I got these padded shorts. I ride indoors at least three times a week and these pants will be an added benefit. The padding helps keep me comfortable through the rides. The material of the shorts are lightweight and soft with no riding up on the thighs! And pockets – great for keeping snacks or a phone.

I’m going to have to get myself more of these shorts!.

My wife and I each bought these for our bike rides. I never thought I would wear shorts with padding, but these have made me a fan! The comfort difference between riding with these and riding without these is very obvious.

We can ride comfortably for much longer when we wear these shorts vs. when we used to ride without them. The sizing for the men’s shorts seems to run a tad on the small side, so buy accordingly. I have a 29-30 inch waist, and I bought a medium, which fits perfectly.

I bought 2 identical pairs. I love they way they fit and feel. I am a tall woman and prefer the mens shorts for the length of the straddle. But I use a larger padded bike seat and there would not be enough padding for the narrow road bike seats.

The foam liner always rolls up or folds over in the wash in one pair, yet it has never happened in the other pair. I always soak & wash gentle cycle and hang dry so they last a long time.

Comfortable if a little long. Good padding, doesn’t bunch up and great for peloton! Material looks like it will last as well, just hang dry.

I’ve been riding the Leatt shorts for a few months, and liked the 2. 0 so much I’ve bought another pair. They are light weight, well vented, fit well, and are comfortable. They are snug enough that they don’t flap around, but have enough room in the legs that I don’t feel them when pedaling.

The fabric is softer than most shorts I’ve used, and stretches. I have both the 2. 0 and 4. 0 shorts. The 4. 0 are reinforced, and heavier. I like the 2. 0 for everyday cross county rides, and use the 4.

0 for gravity riding days, or on colder days. I’m a true 32 waist, and the M fits perfect. The waist adjuster straps work well, and keep the shorts up above my hip bones so they never slip down. There are more pockets than I need, but they work well for carrying snacks, and a wallet.

There is a cell phone pocket in the back, but I keep my cell phone in my jersey, so haven’t used that pocket. A standard iPhone fits in the front pockets too for walking around after rides. These shorts are great for before/after rides too.

These Leatt shorts are hands down my favorite of all the styles I’ve tried! They are so comfortable and flattering with adjustable waist tabs to dial in the fit. The huge side pockets are my favorite part.

They’re so convenient for storing my phone that I end up wearing these shorts off the bike a lot as well, making them an even better purchase! The material is lightweight, has a premium feel, and is very durable.

The shorts have been through so many wears, washes, a few crashes, and they still look like new. Side note: these do have a somewhat low rise fit. I personally love this and find it comfortable while I’m riding, but I know some people prefer high rise so I figured it was important to mention.

These shorts are easily the most comfortable shorts I have worn. The fabric has a really nice feel, the fit for me is perfect with the tab adjustment and the slightly elasticated waste providing room for movement.

If I had to nominate some faults, they would be the gusset fly instead of a zip and the hip pockets are just that – they are to the side rather than front and, although very secure with the zip opening, are a little difficult to get into.

In reality though, these faults were initial perceptions and are easily excuse given the super comfort. Durability? Not sure just yet but they have taken a couple of tumbles and are still in good shape.

I have no hesitation in recommending these short if you’re after great comfort and feel at a very good price.

Awesome radio and very easy to use just like the rest and a different look to it and it fits the hand very nice and also I’ve had good audio reports with it and I would recommend others to give this radio a go.

just did 73 mile ride to the oregon coast. first time wearing these and they were perfect. i am about to buy my second pair. (i’m an average sized woman – second from left in picture – but bought these in a large – they fit like pearl izumi mediums).

These were just what I needed for comfort on a long ride. They fit as expected, I only wish they had a side pocket for holding my phone.

My son bought a pair at the store. These are his first as he just joined his High School mountain bike team. He wore and like them enough that I bought him two more. That way he always has some clean ones between laundry cycles.

Doesn’t wick away sweat. Absolutely. After 30 minutes of training your sitting point will be wet, and 30 minutes more you will have multiple calluses, and can’t continue your training. I have other shorts (local german brand), so I have something to compare with.

They costed me ~10-15 euros more, but they worth triple price comparing to this Triban nonsense. FWIW I have two Triban jerseys, and like both of them. Even though the item is cheap, it’s still waste of money, because it’s absolutely unusable for its direct purpose.

Maybe only if you use it for commute, which I doubt someone want to commute wearing sport shorts.

Great little pair of shorts, padding is decent for my needs – either half hour to work and back or one hour continuous. Definitely best in summer but they’re thin enough that you can wear them under another pair of unpadded leggings for colder weather.

Bought a size L as no M-L was available in my local store but they’ll be fine unless I lose weight due to the type of material – definitely stick to your true size if possible though. I’m a 14 for reference.

Will definitely repurchase when needed.

the inner pad is quite thick & comfortable, but one of the main drawback is the material tend to be expand after few time of washing with machine & gentle hand wash. other than that it is good buy.

Very nicely made and have nice features. You should make a shorter length for men of below-average height. I cut 3″ off the outer short and hemmed it at a little above the level of the liner.

I bought the same short two year ago and am still riding in them. So, I bought a pair in May of this year. They tore after about 10 rides. The fabric is soft, but not durable.

The interchangeable padded liner short and exterior short is great. Just wish exterior short was of more durable material.

Been wearing the same pair since Nov 2019. The front zipper just broke, for seemingly no reason, which is disappointing for a product this expensive. The shorts are otherwise still in good condition.

The overshort is a bit too stretchy and sometimes catches on the front of the seat. The pockets are excellent for during and after rides – the thigh pocket easily fits a large cell phone. Plus you have enough space for snacks, sunglasses, whatever you need to stash.

I am curvy in my hip and thighs, with a smaller waist. The chamois liner shorts fit really well, and the overshort fits well when I have the velcro tightened all the way. They don’t gap in the back.

I needed a comfortable mountain bike short for my “new” post-menopause body. These fit great and work like a charm. I use my more minimalistic tri shorts underneath. I’ve even taken to wearing them when I have some longer around-town errands, where I will be in the saddle long enough to want bike shorts, but also want the convince of pockets.

I haven’t gone on any super long rides (12 miles is the longest) with these shorts yet and those rides have been primarily on paved surfaces, but so far I love them! These are the first shorts with liners I have worn and wasn’t sure how I would like having two bottoms as I am used to just wearing just padded bike shorts or bibs.

I was skeptical with the chamois as it didn’t seem “beefy” enough to provide adequate cushioning, but I was pleasantly surprised. I haven’t been saddle sore or even uncomfortable on any rides and no chafing which I worried about from having two bottoms.

I normally wear a medium in bike shorts so I ordered a medium in these as well. I am 5’6″ and 140 lbs. The liner fits great and is true to size, the shorts seem sized a little big, but the velcro adjustment on the sides kept them snugly in place without the waistband digging in.

The material is soft and flexible yet rugged. I would highly recommend them.

Bought this pair for an another color in addition to the black ones I have had for awhile. I really like the combination of closing methods on these, especially the belt loops. Other closing methods are fine if they work for you, but a belt is best sometimes.

I also like the plentiful pockets for a day on the trail. On the Khaki color I got I would prefer if the side pockets were not a contrasting color, but it’s not a big deal. overall very nice short that transition from the bike to other activities easily.

The main fabric and design of the shorts are really nice. The fit is good, which is hard to mess up given there are velcro side adjustments. The downside is that there are NO vents. My other CR shorts have side slash pockets that function as vents but these shorts do not offer that.

Final note, the ultra thin mesh outer thigh pockets are a nice touch especially with the offset color, but rippin through trail with branches and stiff vegetation many shred these right off the shorts.

Overall I really like these shorts. They look good. I love pockets. They fit my thighs and don’t seem to drag on the knee for a short this long. My wife even likes the way they look if I am wearing them around! As a personal opinion on a short like this I have no use for the back pockets especially if their not zippered.

I would love to see a shorter length offered to keep it off the knee and be cooler in summer. And I have a feeling the hook and loop adjuster will die before the rest of the short does as it’s not the same positive connection as say my specialized shorts are.

All that said these are tiny details in an otherwise great product.

I have been riding in these shorts for a few months, and am very pleased with the performance of the chamois and the other materials in these shorts. They feel invisible when I ride, allowing full range of motion without resistance and never shifting out of place no matter how hard I’m going at it.

They are designed to be skin-fit so an apparent smallness is to be expected, but I am at the very bottom of the size range for XS and I still found them tight to pull on the first few times. They have broken in a bit with use and now go on easier while still offering the very high performance fit.

Now it feels like they’ve adapted to my body and become a perfect second skin that provides great cushioning while I ride. I use them on their own, and also under softshell pants in colder conditions.

In both situations, they feel great and perform very well! I also really appreciate the clean finish on the rear of the shorts, which makes the aesthetic more refined and saves me from striding around the grocery store while people double take at my padded butt.

I’ve been riding with these bibs now for a few seasons and they are my go-to for long days on mixed surface rides. Pockets are great for Gels or bars if you’re in a racing mood. Fit an IPhone XR no problem and keeps it easy to access for those quick photo opportunities.

Bib itself is comfortable and easy to keep clean, no signs of material fatigue after 2 seasons of consistent use! Sizing is tricky with all 7mesh stuff, I typically run a Medium or large in brands like Castelli or Jackaroo but went with a small from these folks and have been happy (albiet a bit on the snug/compression side) Leg length is good – not too long and not short shorts.

This is a quality product from an up and coming Canadian brand that’s well worth the price.

When I put these bibs on, it fits like a glove in my lower region. Having minimal stitching and seamless integration if fabric panels makes these bibs extremely comfy in that I don’t even notice these at all! The chamois in these bibs are extremely well made.

They don’t feel like I’m siting on a diaper. It feels like I’m sitting on a cloud with these. There are two elastic pockets on each thigh area and two other elastic pockets on the back of the bibs. I’ve been a bit worried that the elasticity of the pockets would give out but given that I washed these several times and have done lengthy rides, the pockets still stay true even when I put my phone in either pocket.

As a side note, 7Mesh has some former Arc’Teryx product designers. I may be a little bias, but I do enjoy a lot of their clothing and technicality in their pieces. 7Mesh is no different. Highly recommend for the steep price.

I really wanted to love these bibs, but unfortunately experienced the same issues as other reviewers. First off, the fit was great and the magnetic drop tail works well! Unfortunately, the quality of the chamois is on par with lower end PI bibs.

It doesn’t offer much support, so I won’t be able to use this bib for long rides. I thought that since Specialized purchased Machines for Freedom, they might use the same chamois but they definitely do not.

The upper is more comfortable than my MFF bibs though, so if they could just swap the chamois these could be great. I also experienced a little bit of irritation from the gripper, and I’m usually the person who thinks grippers are fine when other people have issues with them.

Standing in them, the gripper felt a little itchy, but I didn’t notice it while riding. Someone who’s more sensitive might have more of an issue with it though.

Already bought a 2nd pair (1st pair was actually a size larger than I usually get but I needed new bibs urgently and my size was not available to try on in my location). The best thing about these is the drop tail feature – Really works! Based on the description, I wasn’t sure if it would be a secure fastener, but it truly is.

If you have shoulder flexibility issues it may be a little difficult to reach and reconnect the strap after a pit stop. The pad is also more comfortable than my previous one. I have always worn bibs with a more substantial pad but found this one more comfortable (note: this is my first pair of Specialized bibs).

Specialized has the most excellent clothing options for cyclists, hands down. I have owned kits in the past from other companies, but they never last or fit as well. The Specialized kit for women fits all the right places — including the wallet — and they last forever.

I just replaced the previous kit I had repurchased in 2014. The quality is top-notch and the comfort is even better. They stay where they are supposed to (no ride-ups or rubbing). I would highly recommend this!.

I do really like these shorts for several reasons. First, the high waistband is nice. When I were my lower rise bike shorts, I’ll have a small gap between my shorts and my jersey where I get sunburned sometimes, so that no longer happens with these.

Though — perhaps it is just because the chamois is new — I have ridden 400-500 miles in these shorts in the last 2 weeks (yeah, I bike a lot), and still ,it is pretty dang stiff. I have a wide gusset seat to protect my lady parts, but the chamois is so stiff that my lady parts no longer curve into the gusset of my seat — I am being smashed flat as if I were sitting on a flat bike seat.

So, that creates pressure and pain. It is not as bad as if my bike seat were *actually* flat, but still is uncomfortable. Though, if you aren’t riding as much as me and don’t have discomfort down there currently, then these shorts would be great for you.

If they aren’t worn in to my body after 500 miles and 5 washes, I am not sure how much more it will take! I am also an XS in Terry Shorts, and I ordered a Small in these. They are comfortable, but a bit loose in the waist band.

I have a very narrow waist, so that is common for me. I’d say true to size overall. I also love the spandex. Some spandex shorts (such as POC) really suction you in. I don’t like that feel so much in my shorts — I find it creates pressure and chafing on my hip when I pedal, where the fabric bunches.

These ones are amazingly elastic and stretchy and soft. They also do not ride up. The elastic on the legs is very gently and holds for me great. I could wear them all day in that regard — which I have 4 times now! (five 100+ mile rides in them).

Overall, because of the pressure I find they cause, I said that I would not recommend to a friend.

The only shorts I’ll wear from now on! Soft quality fabric, no unsightly seams splitting my thighs (some of you know what I’m talking about!), and comfortable waistband that manages to keep the shorts up.

The chamois is very comfortable (longest ride so far is four hours) – no pad bunching in the lady bits (yay!) and no irritation/hotspots where it’s sewn onto the Lycra short (phew!). The pockets are super handy – my iPhone Pro Max fits in them just fine and stays put while riding.

They’re also handy for stuffing in blocks or gels. The shorts are a little longer than many, so if you’re looking to flash more leg these aren’t for you. The upside is that there’s more fabric to keep up your leg warmers… I will also say that bike shorts often aren’t all that attractive (see unsightly seam thigh reference above!) – but these ones are quite flattering.

I both have Rapha’s cargo bib – the $115 Core and $270 Cargo. Biggest difference between the 2 is the quality of material used. Obviously the Cargo has better material and details are really nice compared to the minimalistic Core.

Built is the same meaning I never have problems with snags, thread runs and rips. I am not sensitive with the chamois too, but on paper the Cargo has better Chamois/padding. For tight budget and function, you can’t go wrong with the Core Cargo bib.

The fit is a tad bigger than Cargo which is perfect for me. For sizing reference, I am 5’7″ athletic build with thick thighs for doing CrossFit and weight lifting. Small fits me perfectly! And much better fit than my Cargo which hugs or more aero than Core which are both small.

I sized my bibs according to height instead of waist and thighs.

I bought my first pair to try them out as running shorts. They work great! They do not ride up on my legs. I liked them so well, I bought a second pair. They are very comfortable. As I saw someone else mention, I’ve not had them pick up my dog’s hair which is a plus.

I got the Purple Ash color and like it pretty well. I bought both pair on sale, so I wasn’t too fussed over color. I was in the midst of losing weight and bought size medium. I think I could wear a small, but the medium is still working fine for me now.

I am 34″-25. 25″-36. 5″. I wasn’t sure if they’d be compressive or not and did not want that, so figured a medium would be a safer size to try. These shorts are not compressive for me, which is good.

These are a bit higher waisted than I like, but not bad. They just cover my belly button. I am a bit long in the rise, so they may go higher on someone else who is shorter in the rise.

These are really n ice bike shorts. Smooth and moisture wicking. I didn’t notice in the photo or details but there are some small holes (for breathability) towards the bottom of the leg on both sides of the short.

I wasn’t expecting this but I really like this feature. Does give a little camel toe so wear oversized shirt or wear no see undies. The olive is my favorite. I ordered the tomato color as well which is really vibrant and mix bw red and fuscia pink but there was some discoloration on this one item so I am returning and hopefully can get exchanged for another.

I never write reviews because rarely does anything warrant one but THESE DO!!! I have a big butt and thighs and small waist and I’m short. It’s impossible to find bottoms for my shape, until now! These don’t ride up at all, and fit perfectly everywhere.

These are miraculous. I’m going to order more!.
