20 Best Cutting Boards For Japanese Knives (2023 Updated)

I purchased this directly from Shun/Kai when on sale. They explain the strong foresty/piney odor (I call it aroma) that is part of hinoki wood, and I like the smell, although it is fading. I got the medium for cutting vegetables, the size is convenient for that.

The board is light, a bit thin, but hasn’t warped, and I wash it and dry it immediately, as I do the knives, leaving it out to air dry completely. I wet it as suggested prior to use, and have only slight staining.

They say it does not need oiling, I believe it doesn’t hurt, but have not oiled it The knife marks are present, but I accept those as protecting my expensive knives, which remain sharp!.

I recently received the Kanso 6 piece knife set as a gift. Although the block set is a darker and different color than the cutting board, it does not impact how I feel about the performance of it. It’s a lightweight board with a smooth finish.

It also protects my Shun knives from destruction and dull. The board itself sits nicely on the counter and does not move around periodically like other boards when you are cutting. If this is your first time purchasing the board, please read the care instructions.

It goes a long way in maintaining the board and prevents from stains. The board is high performance and great quality when it comes to slicing and dicing. This is truly a great investment piece.

Just recieved. It smells terrific! Great size and weight. Has one 3 inch separation between the boards which we have photographed in case it continues to separate further. Now with almost daily use we will see how happy our knives will be.

This is my WORKHORSE board. If you want a beautiful board this one is not for you. I have 3 Sonder boards and they are the most beautiful boards out there as far as I am concerned. I have also given 11 Sonder’s as gifts over the last few years.

Not a bad one in the bunch. Yes there is an odor with the Shun boards. It’s a cross between lemon and a slight antiseptic smell, which I do not find unpleasant. It does not transfer to food. Does it stain? Yes.

Look at the color of the wood. Stains will be slight if you keep it wet as recommended. Do knifes gouge and sometimes cut it? Yes. This is what gives this rather bland looking board character and I for one want more stains and gouges.

The wood is soft and being soft is what protects the edge on you knife. I have several Shun Kaji knives and they are known for their sharpness and ability to hold an edge. They are also brittle and the best way to protect them is using a soft wood cutting board.

I highly recommend this light weight board. It doesn’t make any difference if you have expensive knives or the least expensive knives available. Protect them and enjoy this board !!! It has become my workhorse.

I’ve been looking for a Hinoki board for some time and was delighted to find this one on sale. The quality of the milled surface is very good. However, if my local WS store had this in stock I would have rejected this particular board as the milled catch grove was very rough on both of the short ends.

I had to sand the grooves to eliminate the rough wood to eliminate the potential of having food particles and drippings trapped and causing health issues.

This is such a pretty cutting board. The word is very pale in color and blends really nicely with the courts on my counter. I’ve only used it a few times and I don’t know whether I’ll have problems with Stains.

I read where it says to wet the board before use to help alleviate Stains. Either way I’m really glad I Purchased it. It does the job and looks lovely at the same time.

This was a Christmas present for my daughter. She was thrilled with it. It is beautiful, good quality, and fits over the sink perfectly.

GREAT SIZE Although I would have preferred if there were if there was something on the bottom to keep it from sliding on the counter. There is also a knot hole in the woo grain that is actually a hole.

Beautiful and well made cutting board. Each one is a little different with the stain and patterns like a unique signature piece. Also, carefully packed and shipped. Would definitely buy again for friends and family as I expect to use it for many years to come.

This cutting board is absolutely gorgeous. My mom convinced me to go up in size and quality and it is WELL worth it. This is a solid piece of wood and it’s beautiful to look at. I will be using it not just for cutting, but as a serving piece on my dinner table.

This is a beautiful cutting board. I will return it because it’s too big (my mistake in ordering), but highly recommend for those with large kitchens and good or better cooking skills. It truly is a beautiful piece to own.

I bought two of these to cover my cook top after measuring carefully. Because I have large grills on my cooktop, they didn’t quite fit with the feet on them. My husband ground off a little bit of the round foot on one leg of each of the cutting boards and they are perfect.

One of the fitting problems is specific with my cooktop; the angle of the my cooktop grills is exactly the same as the angle of the leg adjustments on the bottom of the cutting board, making it impossible to find an adjustment without altering the foot.

But, after my husband made the adjustment, they are PERFECT and I love them! They are beautiful and will function perfectly. I love to serve buffet style from my kitchen and they provide an excellent surface.

Also, my counter top space is almost doubled. High quality bamboo. I did oil these and wax them using Boos board cream and mineral oil.

The board itself is nice quality. Make sure you take measurements, I have a normal size stove top and it just seems a bit small, it’s perfect front to back, but seems small side to side. I can’t seem to find a good middle ground with the legs themselves.

They fit nicely on the stove, although they really should have a rubber bottom to keep hold of the stove top and not slide around. The hiegth is higher then I would like with the legs up, and I can’t seem to lower them far enough to make it look really nice, and with the legs off, the whole thing slides around like it’s on ice.

Easy fix would be adhesive on the underside and the stove top. Other then that, this board does a great job, is study, and looks very nice. It is a beautiful piece. I could definitely see this being absolutely perfect for an rv stove.

I have a bad habit of turning on the wrong burner so I was constantly having to replace the round metal burner covers. While looking for a new set after ruining yet another one, I came across the idea of whole stovetop cover and noodle boards.

It seemed like a good option for me since it would require me removing the whole thing in order to use the stovetop, which I don’t use often anyway. Unfortunately, most of these are “rustic†or “farmhouse†style, which doesn’t suit my pink and white kitchen.

I came across this one which actually compliments a smaller cutting board I have on the opposite counter. It is kind of expensive but well worth the cost. It is thick, sturdy and seemingly well made.

I don’t use the legs because I want it flush with the counter. The surface is smooth and attractive adding much needed counter space in a very small kitchen. I love the overhang on the front not being a straight board, but having some design to it.

It adds a nice little elegant touch. Quick note, as I said before I don’t use my burners fry often, so I have purchased a small white hot plate should I ever want to make a pot of tea or fry an egg without having to remove the stove board.

I have always loved these Epicurean cutting boards and needed to purchase an additional one. The one I had previously purchased allowed me to rest hot pots on it up to a certain degree. I didn’t see it on the description on this one, so I need to check if it will allow me to rest hot pots on it from the oven.

In any case; I have always loved these boards as their perfect for cutting vegetables and other food items, and the one I purchased recently was the largest size which is working out really well.

We’ve been running our Epicureans through the dishwasher for about ten years (no added heat) and they’re finally showing signs of wearing out. They work. They last. The clean easy (by hand, too!). This cutting board warped within a week of getting it. Even though we have never put it in the dishwasher, and never even washed it in the sink, and we immediately coated it with food grade mineral oil, it still warped in less than a week.

We only ever cleaned it by wiping it with a damp sponge, and we always immediately wiped it down with mineral oil immediately after cleaning. It is now curled up so that it doesn’t lie flat on the counter, meaning every time you try to cut something, it rocks from side to side, which is dangerous.

When you spend almost $100 on a cutting board, you expect to get high quality. This is the exact opposite. A complete waste of money.

This is a gorgeous addition to my kitchen that I get constant compliments on. Be sure to keep it well oiled (and waxed) to maintain the splendor. The size is an improvement for me, but the change in height makes preparing easier, and it’s heavy enough to not slip.

Both of us love to cook and the size and weight of the board is great for my husband (6’6″) but seemed overwhelming at first for me (5’4″); however, the board proved to live up to tasks at hand. After several uses – cutting vegetables and cooked meats, it became obvious to me that I had previously used cutting boards that were too small and lightweight.

Snow Peak is known for its high quality and high prices. I was looking to buy something for my upcoming camping trips and travel after getting my first paycheck. Disappointed with the wood quality and how there is no small bottle of treatment included for the amount I spent.

The heavy plastic packaging could be replaced with something more eco-friendly. I also read the reviews for its’ case which were lacking but I bought it since I like to have fitted cases to protect my 45$ cutting board lol.

To be honest, I like the bag more than the cutting board right now I would give it 5 stars, maybe after oiling and softening the edges it’ll work out. Cant return it if I treat it so i have some choices ahead.

This I got for camping but I am using for kitchen too. Its new wood and NEEDS to be oiled before use of it will warp! Its worth it to get some good food grade mineral oil and give it a good first treatment before using.

Plus the mineral oiling brings out the wood pattern nicely and gives it a quality look and feel to it. It seems like the board will get better with age too! The knife is pretty sharp. Its a western handled Santoku type knife; found in every kitchen in Japanese homes.

Its a double beveled knife. Its a pretty nice quality knife for being a camp knife. The hardware on the board itself is nice too, the hinge is long single piece, I guess they call a “door” hinge? The latch to keep it closed it quality too but can catch on table or what ever you lay it down on opened up, a little so watch for that.

The cut outs in the board are well done too, mineral oil will smooth out any roughness. The magnet that hold the knife inside the board is pretty good keeping knife in place. Such a nice elegant addition to a car camp or in RV cooking kit! Makes for a very nice gift.

I have two of these, both sizes and if I were to lose one I would replace it. I like sharp knives and these cutting boards are the perfect way to travel with high quality knives. I’ve replaced the Snow Peak knives that come with each cutting board with higher quality Japanese kitchen knives, but that’s because I’m a snob about knives, and as I say this is the perfect way to to have fine knives on a trip as long as you don’t forget that if you try to bring you knives as carry-on anywhere you will end up having a lesson in letting go.

Así, seguiré usando la tabla, está claro que es cómoda y cuida el filo de los cuchillos, pero si tengo que volver a comprar una nueva tabla en algún momento, miraré bien cómo se muestra la madera, para evitar esos “pelitos”.

I like it. Nice and light, big enough for cutting large chicken breast, easy to clean. Just be careful if you use a knife to help pick up say a onion cutting. The knife cut into the bamboo and tore a piece up.

The cutting board is reversible so I’m ok with it.

Huge crack down the middle with very little use. Everything would seep through and get all over the counter. Had to throw it out weeks after getting it.

First, it’s a beautiful board, so beautiful in fact I no longer use it as a cutting board. After the first several slices I felt like I was injuring an art work and immediately stopped. I have a smaller board which has been around the bend a few times which I’ve gone back to using while I use my new Houzer (CB-3100 Endura 15 3/8 by 17 inch) as new found counter top space since it fits perfectly over one of the sink holes in my two hole sink.

I place my old smaller board over the Houzer and slice away. Perfect. Also, the Houzer is extremely useful in covering a few dishes I’ve rinsed but don’t want to wash just yet. I can’t see them and neither can anyone else.

Gotta love it. Now I did just what was suggested at first, that is to coat it with a very thin spread of veggie oil (canola oil). The idea there is to help make it last a thousand years but also has the unintended consequence of making it so beautiful that slicing it up seems like some sort of sin.

Now I will say that on arrival I noticed a deep crack in the wood immediately above the handle hole. Cracked clean through. But of course it’s just a crack and I reasoned, after some analysis, that it would take a couple of elephants — one on each end — to actually separate the top of that board.

So, you know, given its beauty and obvious toughness I warmed up to it a little more in the sense that, like me, it has an injury, a fault but will be around doing good work for a long, long time yet.

And now it’s got my name on it.

Absolutely the BEST cutting board I’ve owned in 70 years! I don’t always have time to write reviews on all items, although I try. This I couldn’t pass up, both my husband and I are so glad it was as good as it looked and as the reviews said!.

Well built. I did need to shave a little off to fit our sink. My wife is very happy with it.

I purchased this for my husband as a gift. When it arrived I was so excited. It looks beautiful on one side. The quality is lovely on one side, it is heavy duty and a nice size! My problem was when I turned it over.

There was a big chunk out of the back along the edge like it was dropped on a corner or something. It is very rough and right where your hand hits every time you pick it up. I am nervous that with wear, we will end up with splinters.

Stunning wood cutting board. Beautiful enough to leave out on the counter. Large enough to cut up a 20 pond turkey or large brisket. It is heavy but solid & very well made. Well worth the money to purchase & would make a great wedding or house warming gift for someone special.

Work surface isn’t smooth out of the box. A large chip at the top edge. Thought I could put up with it but wood started to splinter after two days. I’d treated it with Boos oil before using.

I’ve always had plastic cutting boards and never knew how much better it is to cut on bamboo. It’s study and easy to clean. Doesn’t leave deep cut marks from knives like they do on plastic that could be crawling with bacteria.

I was attracted to this cutting board because it’s made from bamboo, which is considered a renewawble natural resource. Unlike trees, which can take 20 to 40 years to grow to maturity, bamboo grows up to a foot a day! And i also wanted to stop using my plastic cutting board after all the news reports on the quesitonable safety of using various plastics in food or beverage containers.

You may assume that bamboo is brittle or breakable. It is not! This board looks and feels exactly like wood. It’s also very attractive with its striated dark/light design. I was looking for a somewhat larger cutting board becus it always seems like food is flying off the board when i’m using it, so this was just the ticket.

I’m sure you’ll like it. It is heavy, fyi, but that helps keep it in place. Not flimsy. The only thing is that since bamboo grows so fast, i would have thought it would be cheaper. It seemed rather a lot of money for a cutting board, and just as much as you’d pay for wood, though i could be wrong.

I was going back and forth between this and a different cutting board, but I’m so glad I picked this one. It matches the block my knives are in perfectly, and it’s so pretty I just can’t find myself to store it anywhere else other than right out in the open on the counter.

I didn’t realize from the picture how beautiful it was, nor did I think it would be as heavy as it is. Not too heavy that you can’t easily clean it, but not too light that it slides around the counter.

It’s a perfect balance. Plus, it’s made from bamboo, which grows faster than wood, and much more gorgeous than plastic. I recommend this to anyone who needs that perfect cutting board.

Great looking, fantastic use of quality materials. The cutting board is as good as any out there for sale and it fits in my sink like a glove.

The chopping board fits perfect on my Kohler Poise Sink. It looks great, very convenient when chopping and very easy to clean. The only problem I had is, it was delivered to me cracked, just 2-3 inches cracked on the side.

So I called Wayfair and told them about my issue, they sent me new one with no hassle. Customer service is fantastic!.
