Chicken feed for egg layers is typically a high-protein diet that helps the chicken to produce eggs. The diet typically includes a variety of grains, such as corn and wheat, as well as some protein sources, such as soybeans.

I wanted to address the negative reviews about the product being a very fine grind as opposed to larger pieces. The smaller grind is safer for your chicks, until they reach an age where they can fully process seeds, I would say around 3 weeks or older.
I have had one chick die and currently one that may be going through a VERY expensive surgery from an obstruction caused by large sized grain being in the chick starter and subsequently causing an obstruction.
In my case it was peas and it was from another brand of chick starter, which did not screen out the larger pieces. If a piece of large seed such as a pea gets stuck, your chick will not be able to break it down, especially in the first few weeks of life.
If Scratch and Peck is making the seed a finer grind, there is good reason for it! I hope they continue to do so, and screen out large pieces, as this product seems far superior to more fully processed ones.
My chicks and chickens love it. The only reason I had tried another was the cost. If you are concerned about obstructions in your baby chicks, organic crumble is a good choice for the first two wks.
I like the ingredients of Scratch and Peck Organic Chick Starter Grower Feed, it’s probably the best retail chicken feed you can find. What I don’t like about it is how much dust is in each bag, as well as sticks and other debris.
The seeds and their casings get over grinded, so about half the bag is dust, so this is not a good feed to give to your chicks dry, but it makes a good wet mash, which the chicks devour, causing almost no waste of food.
So I recommend this food to feed as a wet mash, not as dry feed.

Both my ducks were in bad shape when I adopted them, and not used to anything but the crappiest junk food. It didn’t take long to transition them to Scratch and Peck’s Organic Feed. The results are stunning — from raggedy, dull, dirty and bedraggled, they have both transformed to glossy, clean, bright-eyed and happy birds with the smoothest, silkiest, healthiest feathers.
First, I’m really picky with what I feed the chickens since my family eats the eggs, I wanted a soy free feed that most closely resembled what chickens would eat naturally and my chickens never liked pellets of any kind.
We have 25 hens ( 8 different varieties) and 1 rooster and I feed a 40 pound bag every week, plus some greens and meal worms and treats and scrap foods. I’ve never had bugs in a bag nor food go bad and of all the ones we have tried I finally have settled on this kind though its expensive.
I have been buying this brand for my hens for a while and mix it with other things. However, I wanted to supplement their feed with grower food, so I bought this. Imagine my surprise when it arrives and it was the EXACT same product I’ve been buying.
It’s for all stages and mixed flocks. I see that now that I look closely at the picture. but I was going by the title Chewy put and the brand that I was already familiar with. Not the end of the world – I’ll use it up.
However, if you have little chicks or ducklings, I would not rely on this as the sole source of feed.

Great food and great value just wish I could have it delivered too? Please review this for future as I buy 4 every 2 weeks and delivery would be alot better with a bad back:( Same with the Sratch food too!.
Optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. A 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age.
Now with NEW Oyster Strong System for strong shells. Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Oyster shell is a larger particle size than limestone. This means that oyster shell will stay in the digestive tract longer and will provide a source of calcium for egg shell production over a longer period of time than smaller particle sources of calcium.
This is especially important at night when egg shell formation is rapidly occurring and dietary sources of calcium are limited because the bird is not eating.
We have been purchasing this exact product for quite a while. We love it and our chickens love it! I purchased a bag at Tractor Supply last night. It was late and already dark outside, but I needed to get it down to the coop and into the metal trashcan we store it in.
I opened the bag in the dark and immediately knew something was different before I could even see it. It smelled very odd. So I turned on my flashlight and the feed was way darker than normal. Hoping this is just a “bad batch” but looks like another customer that left a review also had the same issue.
If this is a new formula, we will be looking at purchasing a different brand.
I started off with Demur, my chickens didn’t seem healthy or active, their feathers were dull, their combs and waddles were pale too. I switch to Purina Layena and after a week i noticed a difference in their energy level and their feathers were starting to look healthy.
After a month my chickens combs and waddles are a beautiful healthy looking red, they run around like chickens should, their feathers are shiny and healthy looking and they started laying eggs! So when i bought some baby chicks i got the medicated Purina chick feed.
I bought extra chickens because everyone said i should buy extra because i will loose some. Well i haven’t lost one chick and i’m on my third batch of babies. The other ones have grown into very healthy and beautiful 5 month old hens who i switched to all Flock until they start laying.
I highly recommend any of the Purina chicken feeds! Thank you for making such great feed for all stages of my chickens life!.
First, I will write that I free range my hens and it has been terribly hot here. I bought this configuration hoping to pique the girls’ interest. The first feeding was not taken well and now they barely peck at it.
Some of the “pearls” did not separate properly in processing, leaving several stuck together and not easily broken apart. I am making a cold mash of it for the hot afternoons “doctored up” with blueberries, raw egg and crushed egg shells.
This they will eat better. I will be going back to crumbles.
This chicken feed is a source of complete nutrition for free range hens. Balanced amino acids and vitamins and minerals help support egg production while keeping your birds strong and healthy. Give this feed to your hens in conjunction with a free range diet for optimal health and nutrition.
NatureWiseer Layer 16% Pellets Poultry Feed is a non-medicated, vegetarian feed formulated to support balanced and complete nutrition in your flock. Fortified and containing 16% protein, it requires no additional supplementation.
This pelleted feed supports the immune system and promotes abundant egg production and healthy shells. Appropriate for free-range and home-raised flocks, NatureWiseer Layer 16% Pellets Poultry Feed also contains marigold extract for rich golden yolks.
When my chickens came off of chick feed, I tried another brand of layer feed, because it was what the store had in stock. My pullets and cockerels all “stuck their beaks up” and wouldn’t eat it. I had to moisten it just to get them to taste it.
Upon returning the other brand of feed to the store, I purchased Nutrena NatureWise Layer Crumble feed. My chickens went wild over Nutrena feed! I was so happy that I also purchased Nutrena NatureWise Layer Pellet feed to give them for their snack time! Did I mention these feeds really smell good, too? My Black Stars’ feathers gleam in the sun, my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes are just gorgeous, and their eggs are pretty and delicious since they started eating Nutrena great quality feed.
I started feeding my chickens and ducks nutrena layer feed crumbles about a month ago and the difference has been amazing! My feathered babies never missed a beat! They loved the food right away! I started using this during molting and you could see the difference in their feathers very quickly! I had been waiting for my lavender Orpington to start laying for about 2 months and sure enough, she started laying after I introduced nutrena.
I’m so glad I switched feed and I am looking forward to watching feathered children grow!.
My hens are loving this feed! After two months of no eggs at all (winter molt), I switched my hens to this higher protein feed. I don’t know if it was a coincidence, but they started laying regularly not long after switching to this feed.
I’m happy with the feed. It has a smaller pellet and the hens seem to enjoy that. There is little calcium in this feed because of the “all flock” designation. I am feeding oyster shell free choice.
Laying chickens and ducks required additional calcium to replace the calcium being used to form strong eggshells NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR GRIT.
Flaked for easier absorption. Using a flaked oyster shell helps birds more easily consume the calcium. INCREASES EGGSHELL STRENGTH.
Calcium helps chickens and ducks lay eggs with strong eggshells FEEDING INFORMATION.
Begin to offer Cluckin Good Oyster Shell to your hens when they are nearly laying, approximately at 18-20 weeks.
Our Layer Feeds are designed to be the healthiest and most natural product available for your laying hens. While all of our products are soy free, our Naturally Free poultry feed line is both soy free and corn free.
Naturally Free Organic Layer contains a high amount of calcium and slightly lower protein levels than our Naturally Free Organic Grower. The calcium is used by hens to produce strong eggshells and should only be fed to birds that are laying or will lay in the near future.
The grains are left naturally whole in this feed rather than highly processed into pellets. This feed is suitable for ducks, geese and all waterfowl.
I really wanted to love this feed. I did a ton of research and because our hens are pets and we want them to live a long, happy life, I wanted to feed them a soy free (less chance of certain cancers), whole seed food.
I feared that they might pick out the seeds and not eat the powder, which contains all the vitamins and minerals. I fed this food for about 6 weeks. My girls ate it with great happiness. They tossed it everywhere and made a huge mess.
But they seemed to really enjoy it. With that said, their eggs decreased in quality and then quantity. Then, one of my sweetest hens got super mean. I switched back to Kalmbach Organic crumbles and after about a week on Kalmbach, everyone is normal again.
happy, calm, laying healthy eggs. I am sure now that my girls were enjoying the seeds and had developed a vitamin and mineral deficiency, so be very careful with this food. The ingredients are superior, but it didn’t work well for my 6 beloved pet chickens.
I’ve used this feed since they were chicks starting with the grower feed. My hens produce one egg a day all year round – more than anyone I know. Because of cost I have tried to switch them to the cheaper Kalmbach by mixing it in slowly and already my girls are acting hungry all the time and very runny poo – egg production has also decreased.
I am switching back to 100% this feed for these reasons. I have 7 traditional breed birds all fairly big.
SKU 65943733 – Nutrena NatureWise Layer 16% Crumble Poultry Feed is a specially designed formula enriched with vitamin D3 and essential oils for healthier hens and eggs, maximized egg production, superior eggshell strength, and noticeably vibrant egg yolks.
Crumble form encourages consumption and is necessary for smaller breeds such as bantams. It’s an ideal choice to provide advanced nutrition to your laying hens.
IšverstiShow in original languageI’ve been using NatureWise since I began raising chickens 6 years ago, but this new formula is better than ever! The first thing I noticed on opening the new bag was how amazing this feed smells.
almost wanted to taste it myself! The girls loved it right away. It’s been almost two months since I started using the new formula and everyone is bright and healthy. One thing I’ve noticed is there is much less odor in the coop and run now.
IšverstiShow in original languageI love this feed!! When you open the bag it smells amazing (well for animal feed). The kicker for me is that it last longer. I can buy a 50lb bag of the competitor and it will not last the same length of time as the Nutrena.
Its Just Better. Now with the Plaid Perks Program it is the same price as the “cheaper” name brand. SO. It last longer and cost the same, no brainier!!.
I have fed 4 bags of the HeartyHen (new formula) to my layers and my chickens are LOVING it!!! My eggs have looked and tasted “eggscelent”! Their feathers are full and and fluffy, NO pasty butts. NatureWise, HeartyHen is a SUPERIOR Chicken Feed that caters to the individuals who desire to have soy free feed either due to severe soy allergies or other health concerns.
We switched to ducks from chickens. We quickly discovered my husband was intolerant to their eggs. We read it could be soy and it was!! We fed our ducks the soy free food and no intolerance issues anymore!! My husband really appreciates the soy free food as eggs are now on the menu again.
Would definitely recommend and paying more attention to what’s going into our eggs!!! Thank you:).

Optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. A 16%-protein high-calcium ration fortified with Omega-3 rich flaxseed oil formulated for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age.
Vegetarian formula without added antibiotics or hormones Enhanced vitamin E for healthy birds & wholesome eggs Complete feed – no oyster shell or grit required 250mg Omega-3 per egg* *When fed a diet of Layena Plus Omega-3 exclusively for at least 3 weeks.
Based on large egg (50g). Results may vary with factors such as total diet and hen health. Compared to a typical egg that contains 65mg Omega-3 fatty acids.
I purchased this red bag of Oyster Strong with flaxseed by accident. I normally get the blue bag, without flaxseed, for Omegas. Happy that I did though. Because I normally have to give my hens some egg maker, for Omegas.
Now I don’t have to. It’s all in this layer feed. The girls attacked it, like they’ve always eaten it. They are laying regular, (even during a cold Winter). Plus the quality of their eggs is amazing! Nice strong shells, and bright yummy yolks! Healthy & happy flock! Thanks! TS 🙂 Recommend!.
Seems to be a high quality feed, but with my hens, legbar and legbar crosses, it gave their eggs a fishy taste. So much so that I had to throw 2-3 weeks worth of eggs out. They were so bad tasting that we simply couldn’t eat them.
A week after switching feed, they’re back to normal. Try it my all means, but if your eggs start tasting or smelling “off” it’s most likely their feed.
Kalmbach Feeds all Natural Henhouse Reserve Extraordinary Layer Chicken Feed allows you to offer the best of all worlds in one chicken feed. Not only does it include the best nutritional fortification to support hen health and promote vibrant egg yolks, chickens prefer its combination of wholesome vegetables, seeds and nutritious pellets 3 times over plain chicken feed.
This complete high-protein food offers balanced nutrition to your flock, supporting healthy, happy birds. Vitamins, minerals and amino acids give hens the nutrition they need to produce strong shells and tasty eggs.
I am really, I really impressed with this feed! The only thing that I wish is that Farm and fleet carried the all flock maintenance version as well since I have non-layers in my flock. However, this mix is comprable or perhaps even better than Scratch N Peck brand that I had been getting for about twice the price.
It’s awesome that we can get this feed from Farm & fleet and also avoid the shipping costs by doing pickup in store or shopping in the store! My chickens and ducks absolutely loved it, and I’m really looking forward to also fermenting it during the summer months.
I would do it all year long because it reduces my feedbill significantly, but I just don’t have a warm place to do it through the cold months. I’ve even used this as a scratch grain because it’s just as delicious to the birds yet doesn’t bring down the calorie or nutrition value like some scratch mixes do.
When I mixed it into the Kalmbach layer pellets which are also fantastic by the way, the chickens would go for the grains first and then devour the pellets. They ate both very well, and I look forward to buying both.
The eggs we’re getting our amazing, strong shells, bright orange yolks, and great flavor. Again, the only thing I wish is that they carried the all flock version, but I’m very happy with this brand. Especially given that I had tried the cheaper Agrimaster all flock, but the low percentage of protein made our eggs very delicate.
The shells were totally fine, but the yolks would break almost every time.
Henhouse Reserve is unbelievable. Even older hens have once again started laying big beautiful eggs regularly. You’ll also feed less because it’s rich & satisfying. The entire flock (roosters, too) go crazy at feeding time.
Everyone’s feathers are glossy. My farm help inhaled the bag’s wonderful aroma & jokingly asked if I had any granola— they might dig in.
This is a beautiful mix of food, My chickens really love it and come running for it. They eat every bit of it, even the little pellets. It is quite a bit more expensive here at Chewy then my feed store though.
Which is just unfortunate, I really wished Chewy would lower the price $1 per pound for chicken food just seems crazy to me.
Power up your pals with the extra protein in Scratch and Peck Feed Organic Layer 18% Chicken Feed. This GMO-free chicken feed with corn is professionally formulated with a minimum of 18% protein. This chicken feed is certified organic by the USDA and verified by the Non-GMO Project. It is crafted using safe, healthy and high-quality ingredients that remain raw and unprocessed to create a whole grain unpelletized feed.
This high-energy bird feed is an excellent source of carbohydrates that are perfect for fermenting and it does not contain any soy ingredients.
Purina Layena Pearls chicken feed provides the optimal combination of nutrients laying hens need to stay healthy in a highly-digestible, bite-sized pearl. Infused with our exclusive Oyster Strong System, the chicken feed pearls help ensure laying hens receive a consistent supply of calcium through a blend of oyster shell, vitamin D and manganese.
The feed utilizes larger particles of oyster shell to provide a steady release of calcium during the night when hens are forming eggshells. Vitamin D is like the taxi that gets the calcium into your hen’s bloodstream where it can be transported to where it is needed, while manganese helps strengthen and create the structure of the egg.
The Oyster Strong System brings all three nutrients together in this chicken feed to help your hens make strong, healthy eggshells.
TraduciMostra in lingua originaleI took these home and the chickens absolutely went crazy over them they love them. Usually if I try to give them feed Us treats to go in they aren’t fooled I have to mix some treats in with them yesterday I tried the same thing with these pearls and they went nuts they absolutely love them please keep making them and please put them in the 50 lb bag because this is great the silkies have a hard time with some of the feed but this is great for them too so far I just bought my first yesterday.
Chickens think this is okay, they’d rather forage than ready to eat crumbles/pellets. Made eggs smell taste like fresh caught fish. I have mostly brown egg layers, so i guess this is expected with higher content omegas in their food (especially canola).
My hens have only known kalmbach feeds, i may try others.
We were just feeding our chickens the local generic brand and decided to switch to see if we could tell a difference. And wow, we were blown away! The yokes went from pale and super runny (watery) to a deep golden color that are nice and thick.
And the taste is SO much better! I had no idea that feed could make such a difference in the quality of our eggs.
I buy the high in Omega’s pellets and during molting season the one to help with molting. My kids eat it so fast, for 29 chicken I fill up a 10 pound container every 2 days. When I fill it up they act like they haven’t eaten in a week.
I leave for food for them 24 7. I would like to see what % of each vitamin is in the food to know if I need to supplement. I also get them the feeding block and they love it.

Very high quality feed. Large amount of feed is in dust form & will go to waste. Strange that most food is pelleted. but a large amount is a fine dust. I definitely will stay away from this brand in the future.
It is too expensive for so much not to be the pelleted food I purchased. Bought 3 bags. Hoping the 2 unopened bags are in better shape.
My feathered friends usually don’t do crumble terribly well, but they definitely ate this one as a supplement to their usual mix, and have continued to lay even during below zero temperatures and snowfall.
Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Feed, 8-lb bag; Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Food is a great source of essential nutrients. With added calcium and protein, it’s great for chickens that are laying eggs.
It contains an excellent blend of vitamins and minerals to promote overall health. Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Food is blended to promote feed efficiency, weight gain and a healthy immune system.
It’s highly digestible with excellent nutrient usability and helps encourage healthy, natural pecking and feeding instincts.
I am always skeptical buying my chickens new feed as they love to turn up their beaks at anything new. Even more so, this feed is a pellet feed, not crumbles which my chickens have been raised on all their lives.
However I was quite surprised at their curiosity about this feed and found that half of them converted fairly well to the pellets pretty quick. BUT, there were still a few hold outs. I am fortunate to have a grain grinder in my coop, so I ground it down to crumble sized bites.
Well that did the trick! My birds love this stuff and I just placed another order for more Henny Penny!.
My 3 girls have been fed crumbles their whole life. I bought this thinking they might like it better than the stuff I’ve been getting at the feed store. It certainly looks better! But nope, they follow me around the yard begging for treats when their bowls are still full of feed.
I ended up mixing the 3 small bags of this in with a big bag of feed store crumbles. They eat it a little better now, just picking around the large pellets.
Are chickens haven’t been laying for a couple of months. We have tried different foods and shell powder and nothing seemed to work. When I saw chewy had layer feed that I could order and have shipped to the house I was Ultra excited to not have to make a trip to the co-op.
Not only was this a wonderful perk but our girls have started laying again! We will definitely continue to buy this product.
