20 Best Bikes For Heavy Guys (2023 Updated)

I love it. Great bike for me. Since I had read in reviews that the bearings were all basically dry, I tore it apart to redo them when I first got it. I found though that there was some grease in all bearings, though I did add more.

I have had zero issues with the quality of the brakes and shifting. Everything has functioned flawlessly with one slight exception. The front brake caliper was adjusted slightly to the left causing a slight rub as the disk rotated in the calipers.

The caliper was easy enough to adjust, so it now makes no contact and thus no noises or interference at all. The brakes do stop well enough, but not o a dime. The only other noise is the tires themselves.

They do have some road noise, but not extreme. Being a big guy at 310 lbs, this is a great source of exercise for me, but there were 2 musts. 1. I installed a better seat. 2. I installed new handlebars with a 5 in rise.

Both of which made it SO much more comfortable to ride. I don’t plan on doing any actual mountain or trail riding, but on city streets and park trails, this has been great. I would highly recommend this bike for the money.

great price on a great bike. This is the base unit all the other color variations are built around. Pkg was well packed, arrived without a single blemish, with all assembly parts and owners manual included.

Must have metric allen wrenches and box/openend wrenches. The only glitch in the unit I received was the front brake cable was routed incorrectly. Was able to reroute it by unbolting the front caliper assembly from the forks, correctly routing the cable assembly around the front of the bike and reattaching the caliper to the fork mounts.

All of the cable assemblies were properly preset and worked fine. Removing and reattaching the front caliper assembly didn’t effect the settings at all. Overall a great bike for a great price. $50 less than the same exact bike at Amazon.

I bought this bike five years ago and after realizing a 64yr. old geezer would have trouble riding very far on such a heavy bike I put a 1000watt hub motor on the front. what a difference! Later I added a 1000watt midmotor.

I am now as a cycling god. I have about 14000miles on this thing and have only replaced brake discs once and pads quite a few times. brakes are pretty good but must be adjusted once in a while. I average about 2 to 3 thousand miles per rear wheel.

they are about fifty dollars from Pacific Cycles and easier to swap out than mess with bearings. this thing is really easy to work on and makes one of the best and cheapest Ebike platforms I have found.

If you want something smaller I can recommend the 24″ Mongoose Logan fat bike which is an equally great Ebike platform. I love this Mongoose Hitch fat bike.

Fast delivery. I had ordered another seat because the one it comes with is not comfortable. Was a little tricky to put together. Once it was completed though it was worth it. I get lots of compliments.

The tires are great. Have not had any issues with it going flat.

I just returned this bike to Walmart. The brakes were binding. I backed the brakes off so not to rub when coasting, but now the brakes don’t stop the bike because they’re too loose.

This was my 3rd Mountain Bike as the other two just wore out over the years, and most expensive yet (other two were Northrock and Trek cheap Costco versions) Bike came fast and I put it together easily.

But it had 3 bad things, which was too many. Good points: gearing is good for mountain bike, disc brakes hold well, lots of features for the money Bad points: The bike arrived with brakes and derailleurs assembled.

Both were not assembled correctly with the front derailleur mounted at a twisted angle and too high. Both brakes were mounted offset from where they should be to be adjust correctly. No big deal, I just re-adjusted them but I could not get the front derailleur adjusted so that it would work smoothing on both the flats and the hills.

2nd issue was the front brake disk was slightly warped and made the brake “surge” when going down hill. It still stopped the bike but unevenly. Likely it could be trued, but a third problem was one too many: the front crank had a really annoying click on the right side crank when the pedal went past 10 o’clock riding uphill.

Click, click, click. I associate it with a badness in the bearing inside the crank, but don’t know for sure. But, it was one problem too many. I returned it and got a REI co-op bike DRT 1. 1 instead.

it was about $200 more but it has the nice feature of hydraulic brakes and REI sets it up for you. Walmart was fine for taking a return. I would have kept the bike except for the clicking; the other problems could have been resolved with some fooling around I think.

great price for a decent mongoose product. a little heavy but I have upgraded it with new not plastic pedals, rear shock I got was non spring, but air actuated. then I got both disc rotors (red). remember the front rotor is 180 mm and rear is 160mm.

that’s great stopping power if u adjust it right. I put it through a beating on our road being redone with huge hills and sand and mud. it did very well. I also am changing the brake and shift housing from black to shimano sis grey.

The best bike on the market. Yes you might have issues with the motor but you have 4 years warranty. Do you think Shimano is flawless? Friend of mine had Obrea Rise – motor died… Before going with this purchase I tried 2 bikes – 2022 SC Heckler X01 and Obrea Rise.

I returned both of them. Thank you Specialized for doing a great job designing frame then battery for the frame and SL motor for the frame or affecting design of third party company who supply motors.

NOT the opposite way how many brands do. Bike geometry is the best ebike I’ve ever ridden – very maneuverable, snappy on turns, has thirst to take off from the ground easily. First time I took S3 size (downsize) – the best decision that I’ve made :).

And the most important thing when you go crazy DH – you don’t have rattle, crazy weight shifting because of the components shifting back and forth inside of the frame or motor and make bike unmanageable to ride on such technical terrains.

The one thing that I’m looking forward when Specialized manufacturers it’s own full powered motor for Levo to make it last till the end. Thank you Specialized!.

I don’t ride down mountains. But I ride urban hills with potholes and park trails on my regular commute. I needed a light ebike that I could take up and down stairs to my office and I wanted it full suspension.

Most of the urban commuter full suspension ebikes are super heavy. I bought this, put some maxxis hookworms on it, rigged up some lights, added custom handle bars to make the seating position more upright and now I’m in business.

Specialized should consider this market. Mountain riders aren’t the only ones who want a super light full suspension option. I get the perfect range of assist for a work out or for arriving to work not in a full sweat.

The full fat ebikes are too clunky for my use case. The way I have this rigged is perfect. It’s a beautiful machine. I hang it on my wall as a piece of engineering art. My complements to whoever chose this color.

It’s by far my favorite looking bike in the SL class market wide.

This is my first e-bike and it has helped me to rediscover my childhood enjoyment of bike riding on a whole new scale. Although I’ve enjoyed riding bikes when the setting called for it (down in Seaside on vacation, or around the neighborhood with the kids), I’ve never been a serious cyclist.

This new bike from Aventon has nonetheless been easy to set up, and a real blast to ride. I’ve found myself riding all around our little town here in Georgia (the abundant bike and golf cart paths help) without the slightest concern about running out of steam, or some joint acting up miles from home.

It’s been totally liberating and tons of fun. e-bikes in general are a great way to get around, and this Aventon unit is an excellent example: well built, long lasting battery (Aventon claims about 45 miles and I have no reason to doubt this), quality components like hydraulic disc brakes, nice fat tires, and intuitive operation.

For those new to e-bikes, it’s worth noting that an e-bike is not like a motor scooter or electric motorbike in that e-bikes generally need to be pedaled. The system allows you to add a variable amount of electric assistance to your own pedaling, making long rides and steep hills a breeze.

Because the assistance is adjustable, you can get as much or as little exercise as you like. There’s also a throttle that can be used in a pinch to keep moving even without pedaling, but generally you control the speed via your legs, making the bike easy to use and control.

This also means that the bike isn’t going to run away from you (or with you) since it will stop when you stop the pedals. In my experience, the Aventure was well behaved. You can definitely feel the assist kicking in after starting to turn the pedals, but generally the motor is well controlled, especially at the lower assistance levels.

The disc brakes are easy to modulate and confidence inspiring. The seat is comfortable, but could probably be changed out (there’s a quick release) if you wanted something different. It’s worth noting that this bike does NOT have a quick release on the front wheel, so you need to pack a wrench if you intend to dismount the wheel.

The bike includes a surprisingly effective headlight (given its small size) and a nice bright red tail and brake light, both of which make it reasonably easy to spot even as the sun goes down. Aventon ships this bike in a very well packaged box and all components are thoughtfully protected.

Assembly is not difficult, even for the uninitiated, and all needed tools are supplied. Just add a helmet and a pump for the tires. That said, Aventon suggests having a local bike shop put it together for you and that’s not a terrible idea, especially if you’re concerned about the weight of this unit.

My bike did need some minor adjustments, but so far I’ve been able to do anything needed at home. Pros: – Well made and attractively designed, with the battery neatly integrated into the frame. – Excellent performance with tons of power for high speed cruising (up to 28 mph) and steep hill climbs.

– Big fat tires and suspension mean it can easily traverse even rough terrain. – Long battery life. After a ride of about 7 miles, my bike was still above 90% (the official range figure is about 45 miles).

– Good quality hardware – hydraulic brakes are very strong and even the small included headlight is quite effective at night (an upgraded unit is available if needed). – Easy to assemble with all required parts, tools, and charger included.

– Good service and support. – Control unit can connect to an app on your phone for logging and tracking as well as deeper configuration of speed limits and assistance options. – Step through or step over designs in a variety of sizes and colors.

Cons: – Heavy. Removing the battery can help make it easier to transport. – No front wheel quick release. – Like all bikes, it will require some periodic service, and the heavy nature of e-bikes means certain consumables like brake pads wear more quickly than for regular bikes.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with my Aventure and am looking forward to many enjoyable hours with the wind in my hair and a strong motor to back me up when my legs run out of push.

Look no further if you are looking for a phenomenal MTB to grow your riding and future mechanical skills. With so many different brands producing trail bikes, and with so many different people telling you to look elsewhere, there is no better platform to build and ride your perfect bike than the Stumpjumper.

The geometry creates a very fun, fast, and surprisingly comfortable ride. Whether you are climbing or descending, this bike can take you wherever you dare to go. Some people have had issues with the components that come with this bike, but I have not had any issues in my first 100 miles.

You shouldn’t have any issues with the brakes, drivetrain, or dropper as long as you ride safely and have some mechanical sympathy. My LBS is a Specialized dealer, and they were incredibly helpful in determining which sized bike would be best for me.

I fell between an S4 and S5, and I had a chance to test ride each size multiple times to see which fit best. If you have the opportunity to test ride, I highly recommend it! I did order my bike from Specialized and had it shipped to my LBS, and the delivery was extremely fast, especially given everything going on with shipping and supply chains.

The bike has been incredible, and Specialized’s service has been just as good.

Size – I want to throw out there that I’m 6’6″ with a 39″ inseam, and I weigh probably 230ish with all my gear on. The S6 is about just an inch short for me, but the bike shop says I can remedy that with a longer dropper post.

Experience – I have ridden my 2022 Stumpjumper alloy (Black) S6 4-5 times now. Most of my riding is on moderate (blue) or difficult (black) trails with a mixture of flow/jumps and techy sections. Since 2009, I have been riding a Specialized Rockhopper base model.

I didn’t realize that it was an XC bike, and I was riding it like it was a class 4 trail bike. I abused the S*** out of that bike until the drivetrain and suspension were shot. Thus, the upgrade. With all that being said, I’m loving my Stumpjumper Alloy.

It is an amazing difference. I will recommend if you have the cash, upgrade to the Stumpjumper Alloy Comp (assuming it becomes available again). For the following reasons: – My cable disk brakes on my rockhopper have less travel in the hand lever to obtain the stopping power you need.

I dare say it might actually have more stopping power. New brakes will be one of the first upgrades. – I wish the drivetrain shifting was a little tighter and smoother. However, it has never slipped or failed to shift.

I’m really nit picking here. Overall, it is a solid bike, and I don’t regret my purchase. I would also recommend it to a friend. Just know the braking will take some getting used to. You can adjust the brake lever position which helps.

Realize that you are getting a full suspension class 4 trail bike for less than $3,000. Great entry level bike.

incredible bike. climbs like a goat, thanks to the steepened seat tube and increased anti squat on this model from the last, and descends like the clock is ticking, with great precision i might add. great job to all involved in the design of this rig.

the support from the float x is noticeable coming off of the dpx2 on the 2019 model, and the grip2 damper is way more active than the fit4 i had on my last bike. only a couple things i think could be better, but its to do with the spec, not the bike itself.

1- 180mm dropper on the s4? really? i am 5’10” on the dot, and put a 200 in and have about 4 inches of post still out of the frame, a 180 seems as if they are almost expecting you to replace it. 2- grid trail tire casings: this bike is designed and built to smash through anything in front of it, and those casings just don’t do it justice.

would have been cool to see grid gravity tires on there as i would see those more fit to the intent of the bike. lastly, i am overjoyed to see sram codes being stocked with 200mm rotors front and rear on this bike.

great power and control, significantly better than the guides.

The bike at first glance without any complaints. The bike is very nice, light and agile. The way of presenting and describing the assembly in the manual is also a big plus, it is easy and friendly. I’m very pleased with the quality of most components and the way the bike is made.

BUT: There were a few inconveniences that I believe shouldn’t appear on a bike for this price and shouldn’t arise in the case of a manufacturer with such a reputation. 1. The rear derailleur, and especially the front derailleur, were completely unadjusted.

In addition, the cable from the front derailleur was incorrectly mounted on the derailleur. 2. The 3 screws on the bottle cage mounts had broken threads. I had to re-thread the rivet nuts in the frame and replace the screws.

3. Black grommets, which are used to introduce armor with cables into the frame, are poorly mounted, as if they are not fitted, they like to slide out.

The transaction with Cambria went smooth and the bike was shipped the same day. It took a bit longer to get it to the East Coast than I expected due to UPS freight delays. The box came absolutely in tact, bike was VERY well packed in tons of bubble wrap.

The bike was pre assembled and decently tuned. It impressed me with an excellent frame quality build, solid air fork and rear shock. It indeed impressed me as a playful trail bike due to its progressive geometry and 27.

5 wheels. The only problem I had with my new bike, and that’s why I rated it 4 out of 5 (component quality control issue), was the defective bearings in the Shimano cassette hub, making grinding noise and wobbling at freewheeling.

Cambria immediately contacted Marin warranty, where they said the faulty wheel needs to be sent to Shimano… which would most likely delay my plans to ride for weeks. Luckily, Cambria customer support rep Alan was super nice and helpful and within 2 days, Cambria took care of it and sent me a replacement wheel.

Just installed the replacement, cassette hub freewheels like butter, and I’ll be riding this weekend. Great store, great customer support, didn’t let me down. Thanks Cambria!.

Firstly the bike, it’s incredible! The paintwork is stunning, and it rides even better than it looks. I’m 5’11 and went for the large which for me feels just right. For the deal I got at the time, in my opinion it can’t be beat.

Sure it may need a few minor improvements in the long run, but everyone loves an upgrade regardless of level of bike. For an entry level “do it all” full sus, it’s more than capable for what any average rider can throw at it, and as you improve (which this bike begs you to do) it’s a great base to build on and improve with you.

Secondly, the service from biketart has been exceptional. The overall delivery and communication throughout was flawless, and even though I encountered a minor issue, the guys at biketart went above and beyond expectations to rectify the problem and a special mention must be given to Michael in particular.

He was the main contact throughout and I can’t praise enough the help and customer service I received. And I’m happy to say, I will now be using biketart for the foreseeable future based on the care and dedication these guys put in to looking after their customers! ….

And the prices are pretty decent too. Perfect.

Coming from decades of road cycling experience, this is my first mountain bike. I’m fit enough for challenging rides, but little technical experience mountain biking. I purchased this bike to keep the investment low, but enable me to upgrade in the future.

I’ve now gone on many steep, rocky, technical rides and the bike has done excellent. I’m very happy with my choice. I only upgraded to a dropper post at the time of purchase. In the future I’ll upgrade the group set as I’d prefer a little more snappiness in shifting, but it performs very well on tough trails.

No complaints!.

I originally wrote a complete different review and updated it the more I rhode the bike and the more upgrades I put on it. Looking back I was really soft on the review and tried too hard to like this bike.

I accept full responsibilty for my dissappointment as I had previously bought 2 Specialized “Pitch” xc models for my Wife and daughter. You couldnt unload the bikes without the chains coming off. and riding any kind of rough terrain, even by “XC” standards was a nightmare as the bikes were clearly built for flat ground.

With the shortage of bikes lately and all the hype surrounding the new stumpjumper I figured I would give it a try being that my Son has grown into my Salsa Rustler 27. 5 and the chances of me ever riding it again is ZERO.

What a waste of time and money! Here is the truth. The new rear pivot set up creates an unstoppable and very severe Pedal Bob. The height of the lower bracket has to be a mistake. What a crucial oversight! With the flip chip in high position, ultra low profile pedals and an upgraded EVOL 3 position rear shock with maxium psi in FIRM position.

Pedal Bob and Pedal Bite still ruined every ride! Even in the most mello climb over the smallest element you can plan on getting launched. The ultra skinny rims allow for a 2. 4 at max. After riding 2.

6 tires one realizes that 2. 4 and under is NOT a trail tire and can be a real disappointment when riding rough terrain. The rear tire on this bike (on a decent downhill) is very unpredictable. It makes the bike feel like it is too small.

But I also rhode the next size up and it felt exactly the same. The bike is a tank in the weight department and over all is nothing more than a gravel bike with suspension. This bike is NOT a true “trail bike.

” The only people liking this new model are the ones who have never ridden anything else, or dont ride anything past beginner trails. In all seriousness this model of Stumpjumper is dangerous if you plan on riding intermediate or above.

The overall geometry makes it very “front heavy” meaning that you literally have to run the front tire into obstacles instead of being able to place the front wheel where you please with half a pedal like most trail/enduro bikes.

This also may play into why the rear wheel will not track. If you are just cruising, or are blesses with smoothly groomed descents then you may find this bike useable. but if youre pushing beyond a beginner level.

this is NOT the bike you want. Lost some serious $$ on the resale! Got the Trek ex7 and it is NIGHT AND DAY. Will never buy another Specialized!.
