A bike rack for hitch is a device that is used to secure a bicycle to the back of a vehicle. There are many different styles of bike racks for hitches, but they all serve the same purpose: to keep your bike safe and secure while you are driving.
There are hitch-mounted racks that attach to the trailer hitch of your vehicle, and there are also roof-mounted racks that attach to the roof of your vehicle.

The first hitch rack built with the ability to swing away for easy access to the rear of your car, the RockyMounts BackStage Swing Away Platform Hitch Rack is an ideal option for campers, dog owners, and anyone with a fully loaded vehicle.
This 2-bike rack swings to the passenger side for unfettered access to your gear via a cantilever arm that maxes out at 41-inches for universal vehicle compatibility. RockyMounts equipped it with a handle at the end of the rack for easy use when it’s in either a stowed or folded position, and the folded position only sticks out a foot for a compact design.
It’s easy to load and unload with 13-inches of spacing between the bikes, which also keeps them safe from making contact with each other while in transit. Plus, the lightweight chromoly hitch tube is designed to resist corrosion to provide you with years of reliable use.
I was looking for a way to bring bicycles along when traveling with my pickup bed camper. The issue is being able to open the rear camper door. As far as I can tell this rack is the only really good solution.
I’ve tried many other ways of making this work, but all had major issues. Just putting on extensions worked but made the rig much too long. Putting the bikes on the front lowers both visibility and clearance.
With the Rocky Mounts BackStage tilting the bikes down works for a quick way to squeeze in when you are short on time or space and swinging the bikes takes about 10 seconds and gets the bikes out of the way completely.
I installed a small piece of rubber where the bikes would touch the camper jack. Two points. This rack has a lot of adjustment flexibility that may not be apparent at first glance. You can install the runners the opposite direction (as I have in the photos) to change the left/right orientation of the handle bars of the bikes.
Additionally, if you (like me) want a bit more confidence in the connection between the bike and the rack (what if the front tire goes flat?) I found nice orange quick buckle straps at my local discount hardware store for less that $3 for a pair.
I’ve included a photo of that setup also. It’s not that hard to put together, easier than most things. The bolt that holds the rack to the receiver has an ingenious ball bearing an pin setup that tightens things (no wiggles) up better than anything else I’ve ever used.
Finally, IT’S A BEAST. While it’s not that heavy, it is super heavy duty. You can stand on it while fully expanded without any noticeable flex.
This rack is awesome with one exception. The good: We love that we can swing the rack out to get to our trunk without tanking the bikes off. Loading bikes is simple and they stay secure, even with my MTB that has 27.
5×3” tires. Also, we had a couple of incorrect parts in our package and when I called, the customer service people were super polite and helpful and I received the correct parts in 48 hours. The Bad: If you live in a spot where bike theft is a bad problem, this is not the rack for you.
It could be very easily disassembled in 10-15 minutes with an adjustable wrench and the bikes stolen, even when secured with a locking cable.
Solidly built and holds two eMTB very securely. Decided on this BackStage rack to compliment the rear swing door on a GX470. Load rating was perfect for our bikes as well, two Specialized Turbo Levo eMTB’s.
We have taken the GX470 overlanding/off-road (not just fire roads either) with both bikes mounted for more than 100 miles and I have had zero issues on multiple trips. I do err on the side of caution and periodically check and retighten as needed, but that has been me being a little paranoid with close to $20K in eMTB back there.
Fits 2 in. hitch receivers Carries up to 2 bikes Tilt away design Hitting the road with two bikes propped up on your roof is one thing. But, what do you do when the whole family’s ready to go along for the ride? Brush off breaking down your bikes and instead load them all onto the Rhino-Rack Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier.
Rolling with two cycles in tow is a breeze with the Rhino-Rack Hitch Mounted Bike Rack. Boasting a durable steel frame design, padded cradles, rubber straps and more, your two-wheelers always stay secure during transport.
And, this hitch mounted bike rack features fold-down, swing-away arms, so grabbing gear in your cargo area is quick and painless.
Because I wanted to ride more on trails, I wanted to be able to transport my bike. After getting a hitch on my vehicle, I researched different bike racks. I did not want one that would mount on the trunk–these all have bad reviews, and will hurt the paint.
I did want something that would be easy to put on/take off, and sturdy and stable enough for transport of my bike, plus another. There was some minimal assembly prior to hooking onto the hitch. The other connections were a little tough, as I have less hand strength at my age.
I did notice a few of the bolts got easier with more use. Overall, I would like the rack to shake a bit less. The little turn key at the bottom loosens too easily. I’m going to spray a little WD-40 on the rack to hitch connection, so it isn’t so tough for dislodging when not in use, but overall, I would say for the money, this is a good quality bike rack.
Amazingly sturdy and strong. Super easy to install and provides the confidence I needed to trust my bikes To be carried on the highway. Haven’t had any issues. One thing to note: I had read a few reviews about the rack swaying more than expected.
I have to assume the person didn’t retighten the bolt in the hitch after the first few drives. Bolts loosen through vibration, and it’s your responsibility to tighten and check every so often. I retighten as often as I think to, and I’ve had no issues whatsoever.

We just used this for our first road trip with our bikes and it held up great! Bikes were snug. Able to fit kids bikes 16” and 24” and 2 adult mountain bikes. So easy to adjust to for different wheel sizes and heights.
I was disappointed that one of the pins is attached by a cable with a plastic washer. That washer busted day 1 of using the rack. I expected considering the price and brand’s reputation that they would use better quality parts to put this bike rack together.
Easy to install. Easy to get four bikes on including two kids bikes. Have to spend a few minutes adjusting wheel supports the first time I loaded the bikes, but now that is set, it takes seconds to load a bike.
Very sturdy, yet not too heavy. Very secure No bouncing while driving. No sagging. I appreciate the hitch pin key lock so I don’t have to worry about the rack getting stolen from the car. Zip bands to secure the wheels to the rack are very convenient.
The screw that kept the removable locking pin attached to the rack when the pin was not engaged (via a thin metal cable) may have been plastic and broke after two uses of the rack. It’s okay because it isn’t needed to operate the rack, and just forces me to put it back in after changing the rack position (folded up or extended out for use), which is a good thing to not forget to so anyways.
I recently bought my Yakima rack and took a 300 miles trip. PROS: The bikes stay in place through all the bumps in the road. Easy to adjust from 4 bikes to 2 bikes set up. Easy to put together. CONS: Very very heavy, over 70 lbs.
The design is off, difficult to load/unload the bike by yourself. The middle poles that hold the bikes are in the way when loading and unloading. No lock or cable, have to provide your own (at this price point, should come with it).
Attaching to the hitch requires a wrench. Black screw that holds wire to the pin came off before I even assembled it. Screw needs to be a metal one, not plastic. I contact customer support and they said it’s not an option.
They gave me the screw size and said to go buy your own.

Your bike is not just a hobby; it is a gateway to the outdoors and your faithful companion in the wild. It was with this idea in mind that the CURT tray-style bike rack was built. From the BMX track to the paved trail and everything in between, bicycling is all about the ride.
The CURT tray-style bike rack promotes your biking experience unlike any other because of its unique, three-point support system. It is made to be easier to use and keep bikes more secure, holding them at three points of contact.
Instead of hanging the bike by its crossbar, the loop-like tray-style cradles hole the bike’s wheels, keeping it secure on each end. The third point is an adjustable, ratcheting arm that moves up and down and locks over the crossbar, keeping the entire bike firmly held in place.
Both the tray-style cradles and the vertical ratcheting arm are highly adjustable and can fit virtually any size bike, from a giant adult mountain bike to a single-gear kids’ bike. CURT tray-style bike racks are not your average ten-speed.
In fact, they are packed with features to truly make it all about the ride. They feature a hitch-mounted design to work with your vehicle’s trailer hitch, and they come with a tilt-away feature to allow the entire rack to tilt away from the vehicle.
This makes it easy to open a hatchback door or trunk and access the rear cargo area. Tray-style bike racks also feature a foldable, adjustable frame and an anti-wobble shank. Whether the road ahead is the winding course of your own personal Tour de France or the twists and turns of the forest trail, the CURT tray-style bike rack is coated in a durable powder coat finish to prevent rust and ensure a long life.

Ordered this rack for a bike trip with friends. Sadly i cannot comment of the rack itself. The package delivered to my porch and looked as if it had been shoved out of an airplane from 10,000 feet. The mangled package had a strong pungent Moldy odor coming from it.
We tore the soft spongy cardboard open on the end to peer inside. The inside of the box had spots of black nasty goo on it and the bike rack itself was covered with patches of rust. I find it hard to believe that someone at the warehouse actually sent this package out.
They must have known this stinky mangled rusty package would be immediately returned. You need to step up the game wally, I will be re ordering this rack, but this time it will be from someone else who’s name starts with the letter A.
There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the best bike rack for your hitch. First, you need to decide what type of rack you need. There are three basic types of hitch racks: tray racks, platform racks, and hanging racks.
Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Tray racks are the most popular type of hitch rack. They are easy to use and offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of how you can load and unload your bikes. Tray racks typically have two or three levels, which allows you to carry up to six bikes.
Platform racks are also popular, but they offer a different loading style. With a platform rack, you simply place your bikes on the platform and secure them with straps. These racks typically have room for two or four bikes.
Hanging racks are the least popular type of hitch rack. They are more difficult to use and don’t offer as much flexibility in terms of loading and unloading. Hanging racks typically can only accommodate two bikes.
Once you’ve decided what type of rack you need, you need to select the right model for your vehicle. There are a variety of hitch racks on the market, so it’s important to do your research to find the one that best suits your needs.
