Bicycle helmets are designed to protect riders from head injuries in the event of a fall or collision. They are typically made of hard plastic or foam and are secured to the head with a strap. While most helmets provide good protection, there is no guarantee that they will prevent all injuries.

Bell 4Forty MIPS MTB Helmet – 2020 Mountain biking is a demanding sport – compromises and shortcuts when it comes to gear are never a good idea. The 4Forty is built to withstand the rigors of a trail-riding life; with generous ventilation, the comfort of Float Fit and built-in Sweat Guide, extended rear coverage, a full hard shell, adjustable visor and integrated MIPS protection.
Boasting the comfort, protection and broadly capable features of helmets costing twice a smuch, the 4Forty is a bantamweight, all-conditions, all-kinds-of-trail champion packing a heavyweight value.
My husband and I did not wear helmets. As my husband started riding more mountain and off road i purchased him a bell 4forty for his off road adventures. He generally only wears it in the woods and even then not all the time (which is fine by me).
He says it fits nice and is comfortable and feels very substantial and he is often glad he has it. A few weeks ago I decided to go on a leisurely ride solo. As I was loading my bike I decided to borrow my husbands helmet for the ride since i was headed into town.
I tried it on and got it adjusted it was very easy to adjust and comfortable although heavier than my ball cap. During the ride It was so snug and airy i kept forgetting it was on. I did feel Safe And rode more naturally.
I always assumed helmets were clumsy and bulky and poor fitting. However I am now considering my own helmet as a little extra protection could never hurt.
While wemake the kids wear helmets my husband and i do not wear helmets. When my husband got into mountain biking last year he picked up A bell sixer for his off road adventures. He only wears if when he is in the woods or trails never on the bike path with the fam.
I had started bilking on my day off while the kids were at school. Last week it was raining when i was going to ride. I was going to bag the ride but decided to just wear my rain jacket. As i was headed out i saw my husband’s helmet hanging there and decided to wear it since the streets would be slippery.
I slipped it on and adjusted it up. It is light and fit well. I did have my hood over it so I cannot comment on the venting. It did not move and felt very safe.
I love this helmet. Perfect combination of style and function. It has a generous 3 position visor, a easy to turn head adjustment bezel, and a friction point on the back of the helmet that keeps your googles in place.
WHAT! I was looking to replace my outdated Bell helmet and decided to search under their website and spotted the Sixer Mips. I would highly recommend this helmet for trail, mountain, and all mountain riding.
Giro Eclipse Spherical Adult Road Cycling Helmet – Matte Black/Gloss Black (2022), Medium (55–59 cm) – The Eclipse Spherical is both the fastest road helmet and the coolest aero road helmet Giro has ever created, bringing our best technologies together in a light, compact form that’s ideal for road and gravel racing.
The sleek outer shell actively streamlines airflow to reduce drag across multiple wind angles, while 14 Wind Tunnel vents pull air through the helmet to provide incredible cooling power that rivals our most aggressively vented road helmets.
Inside, the ball-and-socket design of Spherical Technology is powered by the Mips brain protection system, which allows the helmet’s outer EPS foam liner to rotate around the inner foam liner during a crash to help redirect impact forces away from the brain.
Progressive Layering of both the inner and outer liners help to offer more comprehensive protection, too. The patented Roc Loc 5 Air system enhances stability and fit, and Ionic+ padding helps absorb moisture while providing durable performance.
I have seen this helmet on the pro tour for around a year now and it finally was available this week. Giro is my go to brand for helmets both ski and cycling. I am a size 58 and with all other brands the medium size is too small and the large size is too big.
Even some Giro helmets like the Synthe in medium it is too small. Because of that I was stuck with a Giro Cinder Mips for many years. Nice helmet but not ideal and a bit bulky. The traditional Mips was taking a bit place also so when Giro released the Aether with the Spherical Mips i gave it a try last year and the fit was perfect and it sit on the head smoothly.
It is perfect on British summer days since the air flows nicely, on the other hand when it is windy or your do a fast ride you tend to feel that it catchs a lot of air. This morning I rode with the eclipse for the first time and the confort is even better than the Aether.
It sits on my head perfectly and you can definitely feels the aero with much more less turbulence at speed around 40kmh. you still do get proper air flowing but clearly not as much as the aether. The spherical MIPS is a game changer in both helmets since they allow the helmet to sit on the head much better.
To summarize the aether is great and will be used for hilly/mountain ride in spring/summer and the Eclipse is amazing and will be used for faster and winter/spring/fall rides. If I had to chose only one and just use it in England I would go for the Eclipse.
The only negative point: they are both expensive but as we say in french, il faut se faire plaisir dans la vie. Finally thank you to the Sigma sport team in Hampton Wick, it is always a pleasure to come to the shop and speak to you.
This helmet is very comfortable and the spherical technology is quite cool. I actually ended up going with the Specialized Evade 2 MIPS only because the chin strap was a better fit for me and it looked better with my head shape.
I bought this helmet in the hopes of improving my time in an Ironman 70. 3 later this year. It fits well, feels really comfortable, and looks great. What I haven’t tried yet is to run a comparison to see how much of an aero boost it gives me if any over my road helmet.
Silas is your classic bike helmet revamped, refreshed, and ready for adventure whenever you are. Find your perfect fit with Silas’ adjustable straps and ErgoKnob dial, and with 24 vents to feel the wind in your hair, you’ll forget you’re even wearing it.
Riding faster. Riding farther. Riding more aggressively. When you’re pushing your mountain biking limits you can rely on the outstanding protection of the Convoy MIPS MTB Helmet should it all go a bit wrong.
The combination of lightweight in-mould construction and MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) offers superb shock absorption and protection from impacts. The MIPS is also integrated with Smith’s VaporFitTM fit system, letting you get a precise fit every time you ride – if you do hit the dirt then you can be confident your Convoy will stay where it needs to be.
What is MIPS? Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) is a proven system that reduces the rotational forces on the brain when you’re involved in a crash. The forces are absorbed and redirected to prevent them from being transmitted to the brain.
MIPS is a Brain Protection System Rotational motion can cause brain injuries The low friction layer allows a sliding movement of 10–15 mm, in all directions, reducing rotational motion to the brain during impact MIPS adds protection Trail Riding Details Not only will you enjoy safety from your Convoy MIPS it’s got everything else dialled too.
The AirEvacTM ventilation system features 20 vents, all carefully shaped and positioned to allow optimal airflow. Cool air in. Warm air out. All-day comfort the result. The comfort lining does exactly what it says, keeps you comfortable, drawing away sweat as you build up heat.
You’ll also find superb eyewear integration, letting you dock your eyewear for long climbs or mid-rider chats. The Convoy MIPS mountain bike helmet has got all you need for a fun and safe day on the trails.
My parents have always been very anti-helmet. After college i needed to start exercising after a not so hot physical exam. When I bought my bike the sales person suggested a helmet but i was hesitant after always hearing my parents negatively towards them.
After a few rides and seeing so many people with helmets and a close call with a low branch i started thinking investing in a helmet would be a wise decision. I found the smith signal in pool (aqua) and tried it on.
The fit is pretty stellar much the same as my ball cap. The straps are simple to adjust and it stays firmly on my head. The are plenty of vents to keep me cool and honestly it is not heavy or uncomfortable.
Overall it is a very nice piece of equipment for the money.

I have always been a small/medium helmet guy. My head circumference is 57. Which put me (according to the sizing chart) right in the middle of the 56-58 Medium size. After reading a few reviews here.
I decided to size UP. To a LARGE. Really glad I did. The large fits my “medium” head perfectly. Because this helmet was in low inventory just about everywhere I looked. I even had a medium-sized helmet saved in my cart, just in case the large was too large.
It wasn’t. Perfect fit. Incredible helmet. Fit and finish is amazing. Protection with the MIPS and fuller-coverage over ears and jaw is state-of-the-art. But the helmet is light enough to where I don’t feel restricted.
Or stuffy like some full face helmets. Really thoughtful design. One of the more expensive helmets I’ve ever purchased. Well worth the money. Fox Stuff always impresses.
The Lumos Ultra is equipped with a range of smart safety features that make cycling safer. These include the integrated turn signals, which are operated with a radio remote control or manually with the Apple Watch.
As standard, the Ultra has integrated front and rear lighting for better visibility. Thanks to the improved COB (Lightweight Integrated Circuit) construction technology, the helmet weighs only 370 g.
However, the lighting is brighter than other Lumos models. The Ultra now comes with more than 10 hours of battery life, and the headset charges via a USB-C cable. Lumos also offers an app to check battery levels, adjust helmet settings, and track rides.
Details on the Lumos UltraLumos features a proven lighting system consisting of high-quality integrated LEDs and flashers that can be operated via wireless remote or gesture recognition via the Apple Watch’s lightweight circuitry-on-board (COB) design, which makes the headset lighter and the lighting brighter than before.

Highly vented to increase cooling. 13 vents. Extended rear for added protection. MIPS technology. Adjustable angle visor. Goggle compatibility.
Very nice helmet aesthetically, the line is clean and modern, overall well done. The padding is really minimal so if it fits a little tight, it is better to lean towards an extra size: I have a 58 and the SM fits tightly even if they give it as a limit size.
Much better an L-XL also in view of the winter perhaps with an under helmet.
Am over the moon with the Cannondale Ryker – it fitted my head perfectly after very little by way of adjustment, is very lightweight but feels sturdy; and importantly the larger holes allows for more airflow leaving my noggin feeling cool.
The Viantor is, thanks to optimal ventilation, high in both safety and comfort. This is an ideal entry-level cycling helmet for road racing. ActiCage: Structural reinforcement integrated in the EPS to optimise stability.
Multi Shell In-Mold for durable bonding of multi-part outer shell and shock-absorbing helmet material (EPS). Good ventilation with 4 air inlets and 14 air outlets connected with flow channels. Zoom Ace adjustment system with non-slip adjustment wheel for individual fit.
Semi-enclosing plastic ring connected to the adjustment system for optimum stability and form-fitness. Ponytail compatible and well suited for braided hairstyles. Age Group: adult.
Had a race during the Quebec GP in Canada in August. I crashed during a descent at 70KPH. Hit my head really hard on the ground, which completely destroyed my helmet but saved my life. Had nothing but some really harsh road rash and no concussion.
Even the paramedics were surprised that I was fully conscious. This is by far the best helmet in my experience of helmets. Only downside is that I didn’t get anything like crash replacement or discount by Abus but oh well.
I bought this to replace an identical one, which had sustained a slight dent in a crash. This helmet fitted me perfectly out of the box. The design is robust, the strap fastening secure, and the adjustment works great.
All at an extremely competitive price. Oh, and I love the flo yellow colour too.
If you’re looking for a low profile helmet that would make you look like you belong to be in Tour de France, then look no further. While most road cycling helmets make your head look like a mushroom, the Aventor makes you look sleek like a pro.
It is light and fits very well too. Sometimes you even forget it’s there.

Cycling with impressive animation images With the Lumos Matrix you are clearly visible, but you also look stylish. The helmet is designed in an urban style and has 22 white LED lights at the front and 77 LED lights at the rear.
The lights have a flashing light function that you can operate with the wireless remote control with handlebar holder, and the brake light can be set automatically. The robust ABS outer shell protects you from falls and you can easily adjust the size of the helmet with the dial.
During a long bike ride you do not have to worry about a warm helmet, the large ventilation openings ensure constant ventilation. Use the bicycle helmet in combination with the Lumos app, Apple watch, Google fit and Strava and automatically record your trip.
You can then share it with strave or on the Apple health app. In the dark, this bicycle helmet has an extra impressive function: animation light patterns appear with the LEDs, especially to distinguish you in the darkest of the night.
With the Matrix MIPS you are extra safe during a bike ride: MIPS, Multi-directional Impact System, is an extra layer of protection on the helmet that protects against falls from certain angles.
The Lumos street helmet works as advertised with bright lights and turn signals. It’s heavier than a normal helmet which is to be expected. The only aspect of the user experience I see needs improving is the operation of the turn signals.
The turn signals are operated via a handlebar mounted remote control. I wish the left and right turn signal buttons were more separated or easier to distinguish without having to look down. Also the turn signal button needs to be pressed twice for each turn: once to turn the signal on and once to turn the signal off.
Couldn’t accelerometers or something else be used to automatically detect once a turn has ended so the user doesn’t need to press the button twice?.
I used the coupon code and got 10% off. Ordered on a Thursday and arrived on Tuesday, for free shipping 5 days from order to delivery was quick. The helmet itself is perfect for what I needed it for.
I wear it while biking/commuting to work, riding downtown and it allows motorists to see my turn signals. Has a break light feature (if you activate it). It’s customizable with the Lumos App. The remote it easy to mount and dismount from the included handle bar attachment.
It has multiple cutouts for venting. This style helmet seems similar to my Anon snowboarding helmet with MIPS. Overall seems like an expensive helmet but it’s an awesome investment if you like technically and gives you much added safety especially with MIPS! I’m very happy with my purchase and hope you will be too! -JenRus⁹.
I like the helmet because it makes me feel safe a knowing it has MIPS and that cars can see me more on the road while letting them know what direction I’m turning. I also get lot of compliments from car drivers, pedestrians and bicyclist.
Would be nice idea if it had a rear and front camera to record your trip for evidence incase of an accident and let you see the rear camera displayed on your phone so you can see what’s behind you similar to a mirror and if you make a helmet like that don’t forget to give me a 5% commission.
With its Multi Position Design, the GameChanger redefines aerodynamics. The special shape reduces windage by minimising exposed surfaces, regardless of weather conditions, head-tilt position and inflow angle.
Wanted to upgrade from a budget carrera helmet with £100 budget. So bought a few helmets with the aim of keeping the best/looked the best on. Abus Gamechanger – £90 with discount, fitted well, unique look, light on, sadly quality doesn’t reflect even the sale price.
Exposed foam, low quality pads and didn’t suit me on. Abus storm chaser – same as above but even lower quality in my opinion/cheap look to it. Giro Cinder – better quality worth the £90 price tag just looks like a massive mushroom on my head.
Bontrager starvos – £100 best helmet for quality look and feel but sadly didn’t suit me on. Met Mantra – £80 good quality and feel not quite as good as Bontrager but suited me/looked good on# keeper.
Good Helmet, very comfortable with no wind noise even at high speeds. This is my favorite helmet at the moment and after my last crash I knew I would come back to it, this time just in another color.
Glasses can be stored in the fron in the vents easily. Matt black looks amazing but scratches easily. The shiny colors are less fragile than the matt black. Downsides: -hard to wear with cycling cap simply not designed for that -non adjustable straps Both downsides are minor though and I can highly recommend the helmet to anyone who is speed focused 🙂 Not sure how aero it is but it certainly LOOKS very aero and racey.
The most comfortable and aero helmet I have ever had. I can’t wait to test it on the hottest day of the summer. It is a very lightweight and well built helmet. On bikeinn. com I found the smallest price on the web for this helmet.
Remarkable delivery time, considering the distance from which it was delivered, excellent packaging. I’m very satisfied. Thank you bikeinn.

I had the previous model, absolutely loved it. Better shape and fit than any other bike helmet I’ve ever had! Right when I saw it I instantly thought ‘yup, that’s the helmet I want. ‘ Might be ordering I new one soon though as I may have lost my beloved Rail helmet that I’ve had for the past 3 years.
Haven’t tried the new model on yet, hope Giant made it exactly the same. Complaint: with the new one, it would be great if there were a non-MIPS option.
Reviews for helmets don’t really mean a great deal when everyone has a different shaped head. This one is the best I’ve found for my one, but if you find it fits you be assured it’s also a really high end helmet with protection as good as it gets.
Adjustable visor is great and the retention system is durable.
I can honestly say that this is the best helmet I’ve ever owned. the venting is phenomenal. it’s very comfortable. and fits my head perfectly. The extra coverage is an absolute plus. and it super light compared to previous helmets I have owned.
I literally don’t feel this thing on my head. I’m not the biggest fan of the graphics scheme, but I’ll trade graphics for comfort and coverage any day. Sizing on the website seems to be spot on so measure your head and compare the numbers before you purchase.
Entry-level full-face helmet with first-class protection at an unbeatable price. The DBX 1. 0 DH helmet offers you an optimal downhill beginner’s helmet at an unbeatable price. And you don’t even have to do without the most important safety features like 360° Turbine Technology.
A light, robust all-rounder for daily use! 360° Turbine TechnologyLeatt helmets feature 360° Turbine Technology, which reduces impact forces by up to 30% and damaging rotational moments by up to 40%.
The result is a reduced risk of injury to the head and spine.
Quality seems good, the helmet is sturdy. the strap part is an old fashioned loop and buckle type, which is difficult to work with – a fast connect type would be nicer. the fit seems small. i have an average, if not small, head, and the XL size helmet is tight with the side foam in.
the foam may loosen over time with use. the side foam pieces are held in by 4 very tiny velcro pads, and while they seem to be sturdy now, they may loosen over time causing the side pieces to fall out.
i bought this mainly for winter riding, and with the tight fit, being able to wear a hat and ear muffs with the side foam will probably be uncomfortable due to the tight fit. without the side foam, there may be room to keep my head warm.
I have the 8. 5 for colder fall/spring euc riding, but wanted something lighter with more airflow for hotter summer months. This helmet was perfect. Super comfy, you’ll forget you’re wearing it after a while.
I did inatall a Cardo Black bluetooth unit with the larger 45mm speakers in the inside ear pockets so sunglasses will no longer fit, but the payoff for hearing alarms and music in the helmet is so much greater.
I wear the 5. 5 iriz and 6. 5 clear goggles with the helmet instead. Awesome addition to the gear collection.
This is the cheapest helmet I looked at. I thought the rigid plastic parts were as good as the Bell Transfer, at 60% more $, but the I couldn’t tell if the pads were removable, which I decided was feature I wanted.
As a beginner I thought the Leatt 1. 0 provided enough protection, while being lightweight, but the interior pads and fabric seemed like they wouldn’t hold up to multiple seasons, or years of use. While I loved the price, I decided it made sense to pay a little more for durability.
Note that I didn’t see version 3. 0 in person, so can’t comment on that.
There are many reasons to wear a bicycle helmet, regardless of your age. Wearing a helmet can help protect you in the event of a fall or collision, and can help to prevent serious head injuries. Bicycle helmets are required by law in some jurisdictions, and even if they aren’t, it’s always a good idea to wear one.
While there is no definitive answer as to whether or not adults should be required to wear bicycle helmets, the evidence seems to suggest that it is a good idea. In addition to protecting you in the event of a fall or collision, wearing a helmet can also help to make you more visible to other cyclists and motorists.
If more people wore helmets, it would likely lead to fewer cyclists being injured or killed in traffic accidents.
