Best Bear Spray For Hiking (2023 Updated)

This spray is fantastic and works! It’s super easy to apply with the aerosol spray can. You can evenly distribute it. The spray itself doesn’t leave a greasy feeling and dries quickly. The scent is a nice clean scent, not the chemically smell that I usually associate with most bug sprays.

This spray protects against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, etc. everything you want and need it to without applying multiple products. It’s safe to use on your whole family. It does recommend spraying it on your hands and then rubbing it on the children, and do the same when applying to your face so you can avoid spraying it in your eyes.

It lasts for hours but just like sunscreen, if you go swimming, it may need reapplied. Repel makes good quality products, you won’t be disappointed.

I should by stock in this. I use it day and night, rain or shine. bugs love to eat my flesh. this keeps them away. having this spray is the difference between me having to live indoors 24/7 and being able to go outside.

I keep a can in my car, on my porch, under all my sinks, in my basement, with my pool stuff, with my hiking stuff. I could not enjoy the outdoors from spring to fall without it. everytime I think I can go without it I wind up covered in bites.

I don’t like how it feels on my skin but it allows me to function outdoors.

This repel insect repellent sportsmen works great. It only has 25% deets but it works. I got it for my husband who likes to play with his car in the evenings in the backyard and gets eaten up by mosquitoes, will not anymore.

He’s happy with the results. It doesn’t leave a sticky feeling and it’s perspiration resistant which is why it’s called sportmen. It’s great for people who do sports or activities outdoors in areas susceptible to insects like mosquitoes.

It’s a huge can, 8. 125 ounces, so it’s great for family’s and will last a long time.

I used to use Bobbex but stopped for some reason, maybe due to the expense. I was using Milorganite for a few years which seemed to work at first but this year was not helping at all – the deer were eating everything.

So I took out some Bobbex that I had left in the garage and sprayed it, and the deer stayed away! I repeated it about 3 weeks later and now it’s been about 4 weeks and it still seems to be working, even through a lot of rainy days.

It does smell when it’s applied and that lasts for a day or so but the smell (to humans) wears off. This 2. 5 gallon product will probably last a couple of years. I would definitely recommend it.

I live adjacent Valley Forge National Park. A paradise for deer. I applied this product three weeks ago and am very pleased so far with the results. Many deer have roamed our property yet non (so far) have dined.

I spray it on the plants every week. None of those plants have been eaten by the deer , however I missed spraying one plant and it became the deers snack. Ill continue to purchase.

Buzz Away really works! What could be more important when you put on a bug repellent. It also goes a long way. A little spray and it keeps those bugs away. It’s deet-free and has a pleasant citris fragrance and non-oily.

When I get bit by a mosquito, I get a huge, red welt at the site of bite. They love me, so when I get bit, I usually get several bites. Right before mosquito season, I bought my family a bottle of **Quantum Health Buzz Away Extreme Insect Repellant** and we haven’t gotten bit yet! The bottle says that Buzz Away Extreme repels mosquitos, black flies and ticks.

This product is all natural, deet-free and not tested on animals. Effectiveness This stuff is very effective. No one in my family has gotten bitten since we started using this product. I once had a big, black mosquito fly into my house and I was so paranoid about getting bit, I sprayed everyone and even though we were confined to the inside of the house with the mosquito, we never got bit! Ease of Application I find the nozzle to spray unevenly, so I usually spray myself and then rub it in for good measure.

Scent While it doesn’t smell horrible, it doesn’t smell good either. It’s filled with essential oils (that aren’t some of my favorite scents) and other natural ingredients; the active ingredients are: castor oil, geranium oil, soybean oil, cedarwood oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, lemongrass oil.

We are all very attractive to mosquitos (did you know there’s such thing as a snow mosquito?) and are all allergic to the bites. So normally, we have to spray ourselves with DEET on our annual time in the countryside (rivers, ponds, grassy fields, forests) of upstate NY, where we still get bitten super badly and have sores everywhere.

We had little hope for Buzz Away but it really really works. The key is to use it every 2 hours and it does have a strong smell but better than the toxic nature of DEET.

See that title? It’s not fake, and nobody paid me a dime. In fact I didn’t buy (1) a single order of this as 2-buy combo deal. I bought (5) that’s right FIVE of them equaling (10) TEN individual units in total.

There were only 8 listed, but I didn’t want to hog them all to myself. These aren’t that easy to find in physical retail stores, like you might think. That’s why I stocked up. It’s faster & cheaper than sifting & sorting and hunting around all over local area outdoorsy type outlets, bait & tackle shops, army/navy military surplus shops, etc etc.

They’re always very nice while apologizing that they’re SOLD OUT – CURRENTLY NONE IN STOCK. Happens all the time, because this stuff is just that powerful. People who use this already know, & so if ur reading this, maybe ur just curious if this stuff called DEET in really high percentage (98.

25%) is really a SuperDuper Repellant or it’s just a bunch of hype. You can take this review to the bank, friend. It’s not hype —> that 98. 25% DEET is the Olympic Gold Medal Winner of Insect Repellants —— It’s not even a fair comparison to put this in the same discussion as other Look-Alike products that also claim to have DEET, but at the watered-down diluted levels typically around 1/4 of the potency of this product.

Stop wastin yourhard earned money on that. What happens is the lower percentage based product is thinner and so your body’s natural perspiration tends to irrigate thru your pores and subtly undermine both the strength of the active ingredient (which isn’t very strong TO BEGIN WITH) and at the same time gradually your body naturally literally rinses it away along with sweat.

This 98. 2% version though is much much denser. It’s thicker, like suntan OIL as opposed to watery cheap lotion. This sprays as droplets, not an aerosol mist. You spray it like a mist but it comes out as fine droplets.

You spray an area of about 3-4 inches holding the container about 2-3 inches from the skin. And because of it’s thickness and slickness, you can double or sometimes even triple the radius of the area you just applied at.

This stuff is so strong, in fact if you DONT spread it out a little you can actually feel a slight heating up or warming effect on your skin within a second or two of contact. But there’s no irritation.

That little warming effect is a GOOD SIGN. That means you know the product is not at the end or even near the end of it’s “shelf life” of chemical effectiveness” – the chemical reaction of the active ingredient once outside the sealed container is still hyperreactive, it has not gone stagnant.

Yes, by the way, there is ALSO a noticeable (unignorably noticeable) chemical smell that does not go away for quite some time, although eventually it is not quite as obvious as when first applied. Live with it.

Your not putting this on before you go into a Board of Directors meeting are you ? Okay then. Other than that very very MINOR issue you simply can’t FIND a product that outperforms THIS or even actually gives it any serious competition, realistically.

Like I said in the beginning of this review, this is not a “fake” review, I am a real person, just an average guy, like many of you, and nobody paid me a DIME. If you can accept that the world isn’t perfect today, and wont be tomorrow either, and you’re looking for this type of product that is effective for more than an hour, or two, or maybe three if you’re as still as a statue in a wax museum, this is what you want.

I have put this on and slept, like a baby, or worked, like a dog, for 8-10 hrs straight (either), and I have ABSOLUTELY NO COMPLAINTS. Best of Luck to you.

I tried it and I like it. It doesn’t smell offensive and it is not oily or heavy feeling on your skin. I also like that it doesn’t contain DEET. It seemed to keep the mosquitoes off. I never got bit once when I used it.

I usually can’t go outside in the summer because of the mosquitoes in our area. I am allergic to mosquito bites and they last for months when I get bit. I end up having to take benedryl to stop the itching.

I am one of those people that will be the only one at a get together and get eaten up by those dang vampire bugs! Mosquito bites swell up to giant poisonus welts on me and make me miserable. Must be something in my skin that draws them.

I’m a mosquito and insect magnet. I get bitten every time I walk outside in the evening. Bites everywhere. I tried this product and “voila”, no bites on the places I covered with the product. I haven’t tried spraying it on clothes yet but, putting it on the skin worked for me.

I like to use water proofer on my white shoes/sneakers because it helps keep them clean & stain/dirt free. I used on canvas vans & leather converse. It completely stained the white vans with yellow spots all over, which won’t come out.

Did the same on the rubber on my converse but at least I can clean those off. I did however see a huge difference on the converse being water repellent. Sad that my new vans are completely ruined but still a good product, just depends on what you use it for.

I was hiking a mountain in Alaska last week with another adult and two toddlers (both in backpacks) when a solo male black bear surprised us by coming out of the woods about 25 feet away – way too close.

We followed proper bear etiquette, stood our ground, made noise, etc but he kept circling us and coming closer – clearly predatory behavior. We scared him off with a flare at first and moved quickly downhill but he came back and found us again about a quarter mile later, at which point this spray was our only remaining deterrent.

This guy was clearly very intent on eating a toddler snack as I understand it’s very rare for a bear to come back after being chased off with a flare. But two 1-sec sprays when he was about 40 feet away worked well enough to create a barrier that he didn’t want to cross, and gave us enough time to get over a ridge and out of sight before moving more quickly to get some distance between us.

A bargain at 10x the price.

There if I need it. Not too many bears in these parts. I imagine it’ll work on Bad Guys.

every four years, we discharge our old CABD spray just to check performance. it still sprays. each time so far. it is also good to get a trainer spray for familiarization of the controls and spray power/pattern.

This product is great for hikers and campers of all walks of life. I myself camp and hike where we live in upper NY. We live right on the Appalachian trail so bears are always around! This product was super easy to strap to my backpack and also be in close reach just in case.

The product itself is a bit large but I’d rather have more then not enough product to protect myself and family. Must have for any outdoors enthusiast.

I recently got the Counter Assault bear spray. I went on vacation in Tennessee and was planning on doing some hiking. The carrying case is very convenient and makes it a lot easier to be ready in case of a Bear attack.

Luckily my group didn’t see any bears on our hike, but I felt much more comfortable and safer knowing I was prepared just in case. I recommend this for any one who may live or be visiting any area where they may encounter bears.

worth the investment!!!! highly recommend! does its job but also somehow numbs the itch from the bites from prior to spraying myself. it’s such an “ahhh” repellent. amazing!

Does not work, I still get bitten like crazy by mosquitos. I will say it doesn’t have a strong smell nor does it have a heavy or sticky feel when sprayed on. Just simply is not effective. Shame the brand says it’s “Proven”.

Hands down the best mosquito/bug spray I’ve ever used. I work outdoors for summer camp and each time I’ve used this, bugs do not come near me at all! Mosquitos are no where to be found! I’ll be stocking up on this for the rest of the summer.

This is the product that made me want to try beardbrand. Let me tell you it did not disappoint. If makes styling your hair fast and easy. If you don’t feel like doing anything else this would be enough.

It gives just enough hold to style, but you can still mess with your hair and not feel like you have gunk in your hair. It does great with cow licks in the hair. One spray and it lays down. It reminds me of home sense I am originally from FL and always had the salty water hair look.

I watched a video of how Greg Berzisnky styles his beard and thought what the hell, lets try the Sea Salt Spray. I’ve tried it in my hair before (diff brand) and didn’t like the results, although I already have thick wavy hair.

Tried this in my beard and holy moly is it fantastic. Doesn’t make my beard feel terrible, and after a quick blowdry and a touch of styling balm it made it look so much fuller and easier to style. I can’t believe I didn’t try this before.

Great stuff for a full beard.

Don’t look elsewhere for a better scent. These can by cycled weekly so you don’t get scent fatigue. Also if you do not like one, you can gift them to your friends who may become a future BB fan. Win, win! Of course, you can get the Target BB products, but these scents are worth the money in my opinion.

Don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. Also, if you’re not ready to pull the trigger on this option, try out the soaps which have a stronger scent and then you can afford to test them out.

Used this spray a few hours before a tick bit into me! It bit me right where I had sprayed this product. I contacted Sawyer about it and they only said I should have used the spray more often. That is a terrible reply, because it said on the bottle it provided 10 hour protection.

Also their larger bottle of this does not spray very well and takes several pumps to get it to work. I will never buy their bug sprays again.

Small enough to backpack or carry hiking. DEET is the maximum effective treatment for ticks, chiggers and mosquitos in the south USA. Best to apply before you take off into the woods or around a campsite.

EXCELLENT! I use this product in conjuction with Tea Tree Oil & Triple Antibiotic Ointment along with other Essential Oils to control little bugs that had invaded my chin due to a long ago kick to chin & a not to long ago dental operation on lower teeth.

I just add a few drops to my Formula & the little microscopic buggers are in a staight jacket!!!.

Wonderful product. Wonderful smell. It doesn’t eliminate all of the the bad bugs, but a lot of them. So happy I found this product. Will buy again and again.

My son gets ate up every time we go outside but this has actually been working! It’s nice coming inside and not seeing that my son was getting ate up while playing I definitely recommend.

Kind of slimy and slimy but not a big issue considering it is a bug repellant. Honestly, gave it three stars because I cannot tell if it works or not. I don’t seem to have gotten any major bug activity when using the product, but it does not stop flies, gnats, bees and the like from landing on me and repeatedly doing so.

I bought it because it was an incredible deal at the time, but not sure if I would do so again.

Living in New Hampshire this is a true summer must have. As a family we love being outdoors from sun up until well after night fall. Repel Sportsman Max keeps us protected and keeps my Momma mind at ease.

The idea of a bottle that lets me spray upside down was attractive, but I ended up pouring the repellent into an old 24oz bottles from 2 years ago that still works reliably. , It could be because of the heat or shipping, but the lock mechanism on two bottles so far was faulty and kept relocking in middle of spray.

The spray itself worked intermittently weak and it was really hard to get good coverage without a helper spraying me. Once I got it into a good sprayer, it’s just an awesome repellent. The only thing I have found that protects me from deerflies.

Our vet recommended that we use an essential oil on our dog to ward off ticks. I didn’t like the smell but wanted to avoid the toxins in the usual tick preventative products. Even though I had applied the oil to our dog before a hike in the woods, I removed 3 ticks that were walking on her fur.

I put them into a plastic bag with a few drops of the essential oil. It didn’t bother them at all. Then, I sprayed a little of Ranger Ready & the ticks went the other way & were dead after a few hours.

An added benefit is that the no scent product actually has our dog smelling ‘fresher’. It’s not a scented smell, obviously, but it seems to reduce the doggy smell!.

I like the way the band holds the spray in place and can pull back the band and clip all in one movement, making it able to shoot from the hip if necessary. It fits in the holster tightly cannot come up without some effort.

Had to learn how to adjust the belt band for my belt but after that good to go.

I bought this for a hunting pack because it came in camo, but well thought out details make this a great holster all around. The small ribbon pull tab and the thin plastic insert allow me to stow this out of the way on the back edge of my pack hip belt, but I can still retrieve and replace the canister with ease despite being out of view (and out of the way).
