20 Best At Home Relaxer For Black Hair (2023 Updated)

I purchased a regular strength AFRICAN BEST relaxer a few days ago at Walmart bc it was one of the few on the shelf. I don’t relax often but I’ve use this before. Unfortunately, yesterday after only few minutes with the relaxer on my hair I noticed my hair texture feeling very gummy and soft, as I parted it balls of hair would be pulling from hair.

This was only after a few minutes. I hadn’t cover my whole head yet. The relaxer was literally melting my hair! I stopped, washed it out with the neutralizing shampoo a couple of times and used the conditioner from the box.

As I combed my hair it was literally coming out, it was extreme mushy soft. I had so much fall out I started looking for bald spots. Not only that my wet hair felt as it was frizzy, only not a dry frizz but a wet frizz.

I went to the trash can that I threw the box away to see if I had bought a super by mistake but it said regular. I checked the date and it wasn’t expired. I rewashed and conditioned my hair a couple more times.

This morning I woke up with my hair extremely thin, stuck to some areas of my scalp, like it’s still processing and it’s extremely dry that it has a cracking sound as I comb it. I’m awfully afraid that this perm is still active in my hair…NOT ONLY THIS!!! I called my daughter in another state to tell her about my experienced and she said she had just had the VERY SAME EXPERIENCE THE WEEK BEFORE! WITH THE VERY SAME RELAXER AND IT WENT ON FOR DAYS She went to the hairdresser to stop the process and had to have her hair cut and layer because of the damage.

She told me to get more neutralizing shampoo to stopped the process!!! I don’t know if this perm is mislabeled or it’s a bad batch but to say this is supposed to be a no lye relaxer something’s wrong!!!!.

I have purchased other relaxers but I love this one. Once the activator is added, it thins out and is definitely easier to apply. The only issue is the color of the shampoo. I have silver hair and it turns it to yellow.

I wish it was clear or white shampoo. My hair comes out just the way I like it.

Glad and sad to know I’m not the only one. After using a regular strength relaxer and following instructions to a tee my hair started falling out in clumps and continues to do so every time I wash it.

This is devastating and painful, as much as it hurts to give a bad review I’m forced to let it be known that this product is no good!.

This new product does nothing but dry your hair out! When I brush my hair it comes out in clumps! My hair was on my shoulders and after using this shea moisture relaxer, my hair us at my ears! My hair will NOT stay moisturized! Not with the products that are supposed to be used as aftercare or just plain hair cream.

My hair looks dinghy and dull! The only product that grew my hair and maintained the healthy look and shine, was the healthy gloss 5 product line. So if it wasn’t broken, why did you try to fix it. I say bring back the healthy gloss 5 with satin oil product line and you will really have some grateful customers.

I’m going to say something that I know you guys were obviously probably not admit. I have been using Dark and Lovely perm relaxer for over 25 years. I noticed that the Dark & Lovely perm relaxer has a different-looking box.

I was hesitant to buy it at first. When I got home with it, I was hesitant to use it as well. The ingredients inside look different. The creme activator appears to be thinner and lesser of it. Also the perm cream in the jar has a pinkish color, instead of white.

When I used it, my hair felt so hard and stripped! It has never felt like this before!! I know you guys are going to “claim” that you didn’t change anything with the ingredients, but a customer like me, who has used something for 20 plus years, would know if there’s a difference about it.

Something is not right with it now. My hair was so hard and rough, but thankfully I had some Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner on hand. After I use your shampoo, I had to rewash my hair with the Pantene Pro-V shampoo and put conditioner on it to soften my hair up, just so I comb it!! I would never buy the product in this new looking box anymore.

I’m going to do all I can to see if I can find anybody that still have the old original looking box with the dark purple. Your new box looks cheaply done and the product is ABSOLUTELY horrible. I will NEVER buy this stuff again in your new cheap looking box!! Im gonna be sure to tell all my friends and family not to buy it either.

Get rid of whatever you all have done to the original Dark and Lovely perm relaxer. I have extremely long hair almost to my butt. I pray to God that this mess you all put in your “new box “, does not break my hair off!! I am highly disappointed in your product with the new box!! So disappointed to the extreme!.

I’ve used the Dark & Lovely relaxer for years. I detest going to the hair dresser/hair salon, so I learned to relax my hair at home. I used this new formula for the first time one week ago. I immediately noticed a difference in the “feel” of my hair.

This new 6-step process is easy on my hair. My only objection. WHERE are the after-relaxer products? How do you sell a relaxer and not the products needed to compliment the process, i. e. , the Recovery Shine Cream? Much to my chagrin after much searching, it was disappointing to find out that the Dark and Lovely Healthy-Gloss 5 w/Satin Oil Moisture Hair Creme has been discontinued.

And apparently, the newer Recovery Shine Cream 6 w/Coconut Oil is only available in the relaxer kit? Does that make sense? Such oversight will cost this company customers.

I used to use box no-lye relaxers in high school, my hair would get wavy/ straight but it would feel like straw and it would break when I’d comb my hair. It does not feel like that with a lye relaxer like motions.

I will never use a box relaxer again. I heard this kind of relaxer is harsher on the scalp so I made sure to apply petroleum jelly along my hairline nape on my ears and on my scalp in between each section 1st.

I left the relaxer on for about 15 minutes total, my hair still has some wave to it so I could’ve left it in longer but I was scared my hair would fall out lol. very well-made product no odor gentle washed it out with silk elements neutralizing olive shampoo.

I had to buy the salon size tub because my Sally Beauty didn’t have the small tub. I wish I spent more time smoothing my sections out with the product in. I blow dried my hair before I applied the product to make it easier to apply.

I received my relaxer today and was quite disappointed to see that, I had chosen regular relaxer, but they were alle super. So I went on your the website, and tried to reorder again and even though I had chosen, mild or regular, it was super which appeared in my skopping basket.

I knew I had chosen regular from the start and couldn’t have made such a mistake. I felt cheated. I can’t use the relaxer, because there’re too strong for my hair type. It’s a waste and can just throw them away.

I have always ordered from the UK and have never experienced, not receiving what I ordered. It confirm that, certain sites are not to be trusted anymore. I had hope for at long and faithfully business connection.

Great product, I have used this product for years. I am not a stylist, I normally do my hair at home, and my hair turns out great everytime. Normally this large tub last me other family members for months.

This is a great buy. I will purchase this product again.

I’ve used many relaxers over the years and much prefer Optimum. However, lately the formula has been too liquidy, which means there’s greater mess, more a chance that it gets on already relaxed hair, and that it can fall in your eyes.

This is a poor design. There is no benefit to overly runny relaxer. Next time, I will add the activator little by little until it gets the consistency I want. My hair still turned out nice though.

This review is for the Regular Strength Optimum Salon Haircare Defy Breakage No Lye Relaxer Kit. I switched to this product after getting less than optimal results with an Olive Oil brand relaxer. I am super happy! My hair is shiny, and straight.

Friends thought I was wearing a lace front! With the other relaxer, it wouldn’t smooth even when a flat iron was used. Hopefully, the formula won’t change anytime soon because it works great for my 4C hair.

Affirm conditioning relaxer is one of the few best products on the market. It makes my hair more manageable and my hair has grown. I won’t use anything else. One application is actually enough if not more for people with thick hair.

My hair is fine and i always have about 1/4 of tub left! Part of my hair relaxed with it definitely feels different (sleek, stronger, shinny, healthier looking) than the part i relaxed with other relaxers.

Did wonders to my hair. My hair came out softer and much more manageable, the relaxer did not burn my head or leave me with open scabs which is awesome overall. The best at home relaxer I have used. Even better than my professional stylists relaxer.

What I dislike is that it didn’t give me the option to choose between regular and super strength. It wasn’t until after I relaxed my hair that I realized I just put super in my fine thin hair. But thank God it turned out well.

My hair is silky smooth and shiny. I love the texture of my hair now. I think I will stay with African Pride products for a while. They work well and smell delicious.

I was worried because this relaxer is about half the price of the others. I even double checked the price. It was easy to mix and apply without the strong relaxer smell. I had to rinse multiple times though, neutralizing shampoo was still pink! I made sure to deep condition before using step 4, just to be on the safe side.

I realized both my hair and my daughters hair. I’ve been natural 4 years and had 4 inches 4c coils that stretch to 10 inches. The relaxer took well (so I thought) as I followed all the instructions carefully, but day 2 and beyond I combed out hair like I was on chemo.

I tried to wear jt just slicked back no products just a little castor oil no heat or nothing. A month later more served breakage. I’m waiting for 1 inch new growth and I’m chopping it off. I’m behind devastated.

My daughter is aldo 4c virgin hair. she’s 16 I relaxed her hair the day before mine. her’s appeared to take well also. A month later she has bad breakage not as bad as mine but everywhere short pieces.

Our hair is snapping off and won’t stop. I pray her hair stops breaking that will be traumatic for her. As for me it is devastating but I will deal with it. btw I checked the expiration dates on the boxes and they are within a year of expiry.

I have coarse afro hair with a coil and z shape hair pattern. The super is more suited to me. Please, please. If you are not black, please don’t use this relaxer. It is not for your type of hair. Even on my type, if left on too long it basically acts as hair remover.

If not washed out properly your hair will break off. I’ve consistently used this relaxer for years and it works a treat. Makes my hair so much more manageable. So happy that look fantastic are branching out with their hair products.

My hair has a medium strength curl and very frizzy. I have a lot of hair too. I have used relaxers in the distant past but have been doing keratin treatments for a while. I then saw this so i decided to check some reviews on line.

Most of the reviews are from people with black Afro hair but I decided to go ahead and use it. OMG! 2/3 of my hair fell out but what stayed on was relaxed and with no volume. It broke my hair in half and left a weird sugary feel to it.

I really has damaged my hair and I would recommend this only to those who have thick Afro hair. It was so scary to wash the product off and see the amount of hair on the floor. I’m just using good nourishing masks to heal what is left on my head and will just have to carry on cutting the hair to get rid of the sugary feel to it as the product doesn’t seem to be leaving my hair after so many washes!.

This relaxer pretty much did the job! I ordered it because I needed a relaxer badly and was running low on funds, but I do not regret my purchase. My hair was relaxed straight, although the base of the formula was a bit runny.

Would definitely purchase again if I was in a pinch! I usually buy Olive Oil relaxer and I did find that the smell of Africa’s Best was a bit stronger, but it did not bother me too much.

The product itself is awesome. I’ve used it on my daughter’s head twice now and the finished product is always great. My daughter has thick, coarse, shoulder length hair and each time it ends up whistle straight.

I’ve used other no-lyes, but this is the only one she says she feels absolutely no irritation. Has a nice scent too. To me the pouches are better than the tub. You have more control over how much relaxer you mix/use as opposed to wasting any.

Just as stated, I only needed two applications to do my daughter’s entire head (she needed more than a touch-up). I got two generous washes out of one shampoo pouch. By the third wash, the suds were all white.

The detangling conditioner is good as well. I used about 3/4 of a pouch. The negatives: they’re four applications but only one set of gloves and one wooden spatula. And although indicated on the packaging, there is no mixing tub included.

You will have to have your own and it must be plastic, no metal. Same with whatever you use to mix the relaxer. The pouches do sit (in the box) in a flimsy rectangular plastic tray, but nothing I would use to mix the relaxer in.

At the end of the day, great product at a great price, buy it!.

Beware it broke my hair off. After several years of going natural and the inability to go to a hairdresser, I decided to get a kiddie relaxer so that i could comb my hair. Big mistake. My hair came out in chunks when i was washing the product out.

Just be cautious it did not work for me it was too strong. I followed the directions carefully as i was worried about the outcome.

I bought ORS olive oil no lye hair relaxer and target and it ruined my hair. This product it is horrible it shouldn’t be available to costumers. It ruined my hair and I followed all the instructions left of less than 15 minutes and while I was washing it wouldn’t stop falling in big chunks non stop.

It was scary I screamed crying at what was happening to my hair didn’t know what to as it was non stop more than half of it it gone you can see the short hair on my scalp as thanks to god I didn’t applied close to my roots.

I started using this product about 6 years ago when I was growing my natural hair. One of my protective styles was using a rod set on the permed part of my hair and the NatLax would soften my new growth.

I was so afraid of the BC (big chop) because I don’t have the most flattering head for such an extreme hairstyle. I would slowly trim my relaxed hair every week. Cutting about an inch per week and using the NL once a montg, using the rods really helped as well.

Eventually after about 6 months I was completely natural. This product really loosens my 4c hair pattern. I would only use it once a month for 3 months then stop because it gave me my desired curl pattern.

I did not want a loose wave just a softer looser coil. I would defiantly recommend this product. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because my hair is thicker and longer so I need a larger amount. I guess that’s not really a complaint because that’s what I wanted but still sucks they don’t sell a larger amount.

If this product can work on my coarse 4C hair type, then it can work on yours. I’ve been natural for three years, and it’s been a challenging journey filled with more downs than ups. So much so that I big chopped my hair after 34 months of growing it out.

Needed a regular relaxer for thinning weak hair and with the reviews and ingredients I took a chance and whalah as I’m totally impressed. I think with the added keratin etc I extended the processing time based on texture of the hair after smoothing process.

I’ve been using Dark and Lovely for as long as I can remember. The product isn’t what it used to be. The relaxer is not as effective and the new treatments do not measure up to the 5 gloss satin oil treatments and products.

The company keeps reiterating that the formula has not changed just the packing. I do not see how that can be true when different oils etc have been added. A tried and true relaxer system has been ruined.

And are mild kits no longer available?.

Works great. Always straightened my hair good. Relaxers are not healthy though. It made my hair dry.

This product worked well for me. I had virgin (mostly 4b) hair with a lot of frizz and different texture patterns before applying the relaxer. All I used from this kit was the actual relaxing product which I mixed with just a bit of argan oil and conditioner.

I used my own silk elements neutralizing shampoo and follow-up care (olaplex, TGIN shampoo, TGIN leave-in conditioner). I based my scalp and hairline with vaseline and coconut oil, applied the relaxer (midshaft, ends, then roots) and was done/rinsed out within 20 minutes.

No tingling or burning experience whatsoever (and I have a pretty sensitive scalp). My hair is a nice, uniform 3a/3b curly texture and my roots are wavy and strong. It is exactly what I wanted in order to have my hair stretched and still textured without that overly straight and stringy look.

I can do a lot of versatile styles now with my hair. The only con of this relaxer is the smell. It smells exactly like Nair hair removal cream, but the smell came out the same day after I shampooed a few times and applied my conditioners.

Make sure you do your research on proper relaxer appliance before using this product. If you apply to your scalp first, I imagine you will run into serious issues because of how quickly hair at our scalp is processed.

I hate to give this product any stars at all. I tried them for the first time looking for a product that would straighten my natural 4c hair. I was excited to see my natural hair straight after using this product.

A week later I noticed a balled spot in the middle of my head and was upset. I then shook it off and said to myself that it’ll grow back. It’s been two weeks since this perm and I have several patches of hair missing in various spots in the back of my head.

I can’t even use the hair at the top to cover it up. My hair has this awful burnt smell and the new texture is horrible. I want to cry but that isn’t going to bring my hair back. It looks like I’ll be forced to cut it all off and start all over again.

Please do not buy this. It isn’t for everybody. Please do not buy and harsh chemical for your head. Especially not your child’s head.

If you are familiar with relaxers this is just that. My only issue is how drying the kit can be. Please note that the issue is with all kits I’ve used throughout the years. So I recommend a deep conditioner and a great leave in conditioner.
