Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Studio Headphones
Soft ear pads help reduce discomfort while listening for long hours
The rugged design creates a distinctive appearance to these headphones
The DT 990 has been made for listening without stress. This open headphone features a pleasant sound and brilliant bass. The DT 990 gives a three-dimensional sound, that is, it reproduces all details of the various instruments of an orchestra as a unity.
You will have a completely unique audio experience. Low headband pressure and a soft padded headband ensure a high comfort. The soft earpads can be easily replaced. The single-sided coiled cable can be extended and is fitted with a gold-vaporized stereo jack plug (3.
5 mm) with an adapter that gives freedom of movement.
I am a pro music producer and own a range of headphones already I had been using the Audio Tehnica ATH-m50x for a long time but I really hate the comfort of those, they are hard as rocks and very tight too, not good for long mixing sessions, and the sound stage is also very colored and even after 3 years of learning the frequency curve of those, you just cant make good mixing decisions, but they are OK for tracking and recording.
My fav headphones so far are the ATH-M35 even tho they are way cheaper, a bit softer on the ears, they have such good frequency response and such a forward but clear midrange, totally opposite to most studio headphones out there.
Enough about those guys, I got the Beyerdynamic DT990 PROs for mainly long extended mixing sessions and these are actually my favorite now for everything! The comfort is like having two pillows on your head, and I’ve read that some find the clamping force too much? Not at all guys! Its so soft that you wont even notice you’re wearing headphones! The soundstage is a bit opposite to the ATH-M35s, but I prefer that and I use a mix of both during mixing and mastering.
The M35s can show me the overall balance of a song, I make tonal mixing decisions with those. But the Beyerdynamics have a bit of a harsh high-end which is totally perfect for identifying problems in a mix and due to the awesome stereo imaging (cause it’s open-back) I can place instruments very easily in the stereo space.
Its hands-down wayyy better than the M50x for anything besides recording, which is the only use for those rn. If you’re mixing mainly on headphones then I’d say (1) use any good closed-back for recording, something with a lot of color and hype so that u enjoy the music and get a good take.
(2) Then use the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro for production, making synths, recording MIDI drums or even electric guitars and stuff, basically the bulk of messing around with sounds, doing sound design and stuff.
(3) Check the mix every once in a while with a flat response headphone, something that’s not from Beyerdynamic and which doesn’t have the awesome highs like the DT990 pro (for example, ATH-M35) (4) Basically continue your whole mix in these (DT 990 Pro) (5) Check on consumer devices like very cheap bluetooth speakers and Samsung earplugs and you will get a very good production which translates well everywhere! Really loving these headphones, do listen to movie soundtracks from Netflix (Squid Game sounds really awesome!) and also Anime soundtracks like Kimi No Nawa and stuff on these There’s a link somewhere of the music I mixed with these, do check that out! Thanks a ton! Stay safe and keep makin music! : ).
This is my brothers view, after gifting him who is an architect by profession and also plays bass guitar for the prog/djent band RONIN, In and he uses these cans mostly for demo mixing and critical listening (at-least that was his intention.
) Now based on his experience I’ve listed down the Pros and Cons, Pros: 1. Extremely bright sounding. Sometimes too bright for your liking if you are coming from common consumer friendly headphones. Give it some times to burn, it will shine.
2. The bass is there, and its about just the right amount. Its not muddy or do not bleed into the mids. 3. Mids are hyper detailed. Also, the frequency separation is mesmerizing. The soundscape is fairly wide since is an open-back system.
4. The earpads are out of this world comfortable, even the headband itself is nicely padded. 5. The build quality pretty good (as expected from in this price point. ) Cons: 1. These are some power-hungry cans (250 Ohms.
which is technically not a con) since its target use case is mostly to be used with professional studio equipment. If you are planning to use it in your home setup like me, it will work fine if you hook it up to some decent soundcard.
2. Casual music listening might be challenging if you are planning to drive them from your PC or Mobile only. It will run, but not in its full potential. Which might lead you to hate these. A cheap but good DAC like IFI Zen Air DAC can help a lot if you are not planning to spend a fortune.
Some might say “It will lack power or you should go for something more powerful like FiiO – K5 Pro ESS. ” But trust me, you do not need that. If you are not convinced go to any online headphone power calculator and see for yourself, its science.
Do not fall for the audiophile myth crap. 3. Though the classic tracks and modern pop tracks sounds fabulous, some modern metal tracks might not sound that nice, especially the low tuned guitars (tuned in Drop G, F or E0) are sometimes very difficult to be handled by it.
4. Last but not the least, it should have a replaceable cable system. Don’t think the existing cable is bad. They are sturdy and thick, but it will break at some point of time. Also it’s not always very comfortable to have a coiled cable dangling from your left earcup.
The coiled cables are heavy and they have their specific purpose, which you might not need all the time.
dt990 pro good for its price. but. These phones are well made and comfortable, the plastic headband though cheap actually does a good adjustable job, keeps it firmly on the head without ever being too hot or ‘clampy’ – even after wearing for several hours.
[and this in the hot weather!] The foam around your ears is comfortable, too. Sound: everything is ok, the base is never boomy, its quite tight, but it does not extend down much, bassheads would be unimpressed, the midrange is a bit ‘cloggy’ a little muddled, but it is pretty okay, the tremble is a bit suppressed , although transients can be heard – like a cymbal for instance – its steep ‘up’ in sound and then its diminishing down is rather lost.
The stereo separation is not great, trying to listen to individual instruments in any track is quite hard. and there is little feeling of a soundstage. The idea that the music is spread “around you” rather just pointing at your ears.
Still. The build quality is great – impressive at the price. Here it is, i’m listening to a bad recoding but thru Sennheiser hd560s’s at the moment – the 560s are worse in built quality to the dt990pro in almost every regard, but do sound better.
Most of my problems are gone with the HD560s. But. the dt990pro is £100, the HD560s is £140. AND THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPROTANT: the beyer dt900 prox is £210, the Grado 325e is £280 [?] i haven’t heard the dt900 pro x, but i have heard the grado 325.
it was massively superior in every way: no exception. How much do you want to spend? If your limit is £100. the Dt990 pro would be a good comfortable well mad friend for your ears. And as for money? gosh, i shouldn’t talk about it these days.
But i guess there are even better headphones at insane prices. Set your budget. Stick to it.
Hear sound how it was meant it to be heard. The beyerdynamic DT 990 Edition headphones have been the choice of audiophiles worldwide since the 1980s. The open back design creates an incredibly wide sound stage that immerses you in the audio.
You’ll feel like you’re listening to your favourite music live. With a distinctive bass response and crisp high-frequencies, the DT 990 headphones deliver flawlessly accurate sound. From heavy rock riffs to vibrant pop melodies, you’re able to hear every detail.
Whether you’re at home or on the move, the DT 990 Edition headphones remain comfortable thanks to the soft velour earpads. Handmade using premium components, beyerdynamic pride themselves on producing headphones which are guaranteed to stand the test of time.
Note: These are the 600 Ohm version of the DT 990s, meaning they’re suitable for use with dedicated headphone amplifiers and stereo hi-fi systems with powerful headphone outputs.
Came across these on a hunt for new headphones to go with my digital piano and also give a more pleasant experience occasionally listening at home from all devices (full separates set-up, laptop, phone etc).
Called Richer Sounds as there seemed a chance they might have some of the widely recommended [32 Ohm] Beyerdynamic 880’s in stock somewhere (flatter EQ response and less “open” than these apparently, although obviously I cannot personally compare) and the person taking the call said they didn’t but mentioned these straight away.
As far as I could tell the only “downside” was they might give a little extra bass and leak a little more sound (being open rather than semi-open) so I decided to give them a go, rather than chance 880s at £60 dearer from amazon.
Glad I did – they arrived 3 days later (despite being ordered on a Boxing Day Sunday) and they have been in constant use since. As far as the digital piano goes, it was like getting a new piano with the extra detail they provided; the bass frequencies were a little more prominent than I was used to, but of course they are a practice tool and for making me work harder on left hand and pedalling that is perfect.
They are great for all styles of recorded music I have tried them with so far, although I will now be keeping them well away from lo-quality mp3s as you really notice the flaws in these. I was never a fan of wearing noise-cancelling headphones at home as it is strange to shut out ALL noise (not be able to hear the door etc) so it is really good for this, you can almost have a conversation with someone whilst they are on without unintentionally shouting at them.
And despite this, the noise leakage to outside isn’t that significant although I am not going to test this on a busy train any time soon. I feared the 3m cable would be like trailing round a guitar lead, but actually it is light and an ideal length, even just long enough for me to avoid repositioning my desk and turntable! So all in all, an excellent purchase.
You know the saying, “Your mileage may vary. ” Mine certainly does. The conventional wisdom is that these are shrill, peaky cans – the worst offender in the Beyerdynamic legacy lineup (DT770, DT880, DT990) of treble monsters, inexplicably trying with all their might to **** your ears.
I found them quite pleasant. Yes, they are bright, even sibilant. On some tracks, you’ll want to EQ them, pad swap them or turn the volume down. But part of the disdain comes from a lot of people raised on the Sennheiser HD6XXs, with their rolled-off highs, introducing the infamous Sennheiser veil.
Without a doubt, rolled-off highs make it a lot easier to spend hours and hours with a steady stream of music pumping into your ears. Cans that emphasize – or at least filter less – all that HF detail will be more ear-fatiguing.
No argument there. But if you’ve come to a place in your journey where safe is a tad boring, and where rolled-off highs seem veiled and lifeless, take a walk on the wild side, at least for the sake of variety.
My first cans were Grados, which are also bright and lively. In time, I gravitated toward the HD800, then planars like the LCD2, the LCD2c and the LCD-X. The HD800 was more like the DT990, in terms of being bright and peaky, but it was a lot clearer than the HD6XXs.
Audeze’s planars proved to be quick, like the HD800, but with rolled-off highs that needed to be EQ’d. What got me to take a second look at the DT990 was the DT1990, with its blazing-fast Tesla driver.
The DT1990 proved to be incredibly detailed, but not without also being peaky and sometimes sibilant. The Audezes made me realize how much I missed the high end and the DT1990 gave it to me with a vengeance.
But I found myself craving it for the detail it elicits. These are a cheaper version of the DT990, with no Tesla driver, but with surprisingly rich detail made more palatable by EQing the low bass. I’ve tried pad swapping with Dekoni’s Elite sheepskin pads but I don’t like the muddier result.
As with the Grado 325, you can **** a lot of the griping about overly-aggressive treble by simply bringing up the bass, either with EQ or with the right pads. When you bring up the bass, you lessen the likelihood of over-cranking the volume to get more bass – and getting overkill with the treble.
Forget the graphs. Forget the crowd. If you want to get more detail for less – and you’re willing to pad-swap or EQ – these are spectacular cans. Be forewarned that this price point means the cables are not detachable.
If that’s a dealbreaker, look for something else. I, personally, never saw the big deal in detachable cables, which I have on other cans but rarely detach.
If you were to ask somebody what their favorite kind of headphones are they would declare something like Dre Beats, JVC, or maybe even Skullcandy. While those are all really good headphones they are all missing one very important element – studio production quality.
Now Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro may not be much to look at and they may even remind you of your mother’s or grandmother’s headphones, with their 10ft curly chord and their large, over-ear structure – but with the fact that they possess a true open-back design (which offers impressive spaciousness), transparent immense bass delivering dominant sound, soft, circumoral, completely replaceable ear pads, robust, comfortably padded and adjustable spring steel headband design, and a range of 5 ohms up to 250 ohms – there’s no wonder that they are one of the best mixing and mastering headphones on the market.
They are made in Germany and the company has been in business since 1924. They cost no more than a set of Dre Beats but, unlike regular “commercial headphone sets”, their pitch-perfect sound will blow you away.
When mixing and mastering they do tend to bring out the ugly in the music. They are designed this way so that you know exactly where the piece is flawed and where to fix it. They are truly a one-of-a-kind experience and hands down the best headphones I’ve ever owned.
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO is an open dynamic headphone of exceptional quality suitable for the most demanding professional and audiophile applications. The reduced weight of the diaphragm and moving coiling result in a similar pulse characteristic as electrostatic headphones, and in combination with a carefully tailored frequency response offer a natural and balanced sound.
Soft ear pads and adjustable, sliding, earpieces together with a very flexible coiled cable ensure listening comfort during extended periods of use.
Had to write a review of my lovely DT-990’s because above user didn’t know what they bought. These are studio grade high impedance (resistance) headphones, and they incredible for what they are designed to do.
These headphones are made for musicians and studio engineers who need incredible accurate frequency range and response in headphones with a very clean signal. In order to get this clean signal these headphones have very high impedance.
(this is what the 250 Ohms is referring to in the product title) High impedance headphones like these need to be driven by an external sound card or other amplification device to account for this resistance.
Ignoring the brief education lesson, these headphones are fan freakin tactic. If you are a musician, producer, or just someone who wants a very flat and accurate frequency response in your headphones, I would highly recommend them.
I absolutely recommend this pair of headsets. Although concerns about the pads might be warranted after a year or so of use, the comfort that they provide while listening is well worth potentially buying some replacement pads.
The sound itself is excellent. Paired with a quality soundcard, all the sounds pop. You can even begin to notice the quality by which certain pieces are mastered since it so accurately captures all the notes.
That is how good these headphones are. For the sub $200 price, I would absolutely buy this again.

The DT 990 PRO 250 features 250 ohm drivers and a gold plated stereo jack with 1/4 adapter. Since 1924 Beyerdynamic has remained a German family owned company committed to continuous research and innovative developments for the audio market.
All over the world, Beyerdynamic is known for the use of the latest technologies and a high quality standard. All Beyerdynamic products are made in Germany.
As a sound engineer I find these valuable when mixing. They give plenty of mid-range detail and a great stereo image. They will reveal any issues with your live instrument recording or vocala, highlighting distortion or unpleasant sibilance.
Also great for detailing ambience and reverb. The high frequencies are too brittle for my liking however. So I adopted the classic NS10 trick and put two layers of tissue tucked inside each ear cup. This tames the high-end and makes them much less fatiguing for long listening periods.
These should not be used as your only monitor source. Compare them with other speakers or headphones. They probably tend to separate out the individual sound sources more than most people’s listening device so will not give an accurate indication of your final mix.
But they’re great as an alternative source and for listening to detail when mixing. I’m very happy with them. The ear pads are also extremely comfortable for long use.

This product is in use with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen. These headphones provide the response that I needed to correctly identify tonal issues with my home recording efforts. The ear cushions are very comfortable for hours of use, and provide “over” ear sound isolation.
The KM stand is a plus, added value to this combination. The cleaner is on the “soon to use” list, another value added item.
Detail, detail, detail. Open, spacious airy, with close to the perfect balance between bass, miss and treble; no over-emphasis anywhere, not even on any part of either the instrumentals or vocals. Very very comfortable, seem durable.
There is just nothing negative to say about them. Definitely the best cans I’ve ever owned. There is a reason Beyerdynamic is spoken about among audiophiles with reference; I just listed most of them.
Pay attention to power reuirements if you spring for a pair. Mine are the 32 ohm model, which can be easily driven to high volumes with no distortion. The ones rated 80, 250, and 600 ohms (Beyer makes alll 3 models, the 770, 880, and 9900’s in all impedences, but the 250 and 600 ohm version of each model are intended for ues with a good to excellent quality receiver or amp.
My 32 ohm 770’s sound just dazzling on a 120 wpc Sony ES receiver. Just get you some! You have no idea how much of the music you are missing. Ity.
The build quality on these are the best of any headphone that I’ve used in the studio. My most major complaint against these is the super hyped topend. It really just cuts right through your head. But some people may take that as a positive so to each is own.
I to love the isolation, inside and out, and the low-end is very clean. I wouldn’t use these for everyday listening or for mixing.

Great for critical listening, a high quality music library is a must (320k MP3 or better). They have a very even profile with a treble bump that’s not as high as many other Beyerdynamic models. The pads are firm and even, so with glasses you don’t lose bass.
I think they should sound pretty consistent because of the way they fit (not like mushy memory foam which can vary the sound stage). They aren’t difficult to drive, on the phone they got loud but on the amp/dac stack they really showed off the detail they can reveal.
It’s good for a music lover who doesn’t want to buy an amplifier, at 45 ohm it’s not needed. They scale with the quality of what you plug them into, so pretty future-proof. These I’d be happy to wear in public too, really sleek looking.
Built: Not problem with the built for this price range. They seem solid for a pair of plastic built headphones. Comfort: They clamp a little more since these are on ear. If you don’t like high clamping force, this could be a problem for you.
I wear glasses, and I don’t find them uncomfortable even after a couple hours of use. Sound: Sound signature is quite balanced across spectrum. It has a slight warmth to it, and not analytical like the DT1990.
I was pretty impressed with the treble and bass extension of these headphones. I have not heard another headphones under $100 have better extension than these. Overall, I highly recommend these headphones as long as you don’t mind the on-ear design and the clamp force.
If you don’t like the coiled cable, it’s not hard to find a after market cable. The other great thing I forgot to mention is that you can plug the cable into either earcups.
So I have only had these headphones for an hour but I am greatly enjoying them. Trying out different musical examples on different devices. Phone and computer. I primarily got these for monitoring work for voice over but I havent tried out swapping the ear pads yet.
I appreciate the fact that all the parts are designed to be fixed/replaced to allow for long lasting gear. The sound itself is very clean and braid from the strong lows and blended mids and highs. Im very happy with the design and construction.

These phones are an evolution of the DT100s and as such are excellent. The DT100 is an industry standard for a reason; they sound good and are extremely well built. If its style and portability you are after, then look elsewhere; I have Bose phones for that.
These are high impedance at 250 ohm and probably at the limit of iwhatevers can drive. Used with a Bluetooth headphone amp also gets around Apples refusal to accept anything that isnt Beats. Sat at home listening to movies or music, these aim to replicate the source to the best of their ability.
My Dad had DT100s in the 1970s and spares are still available today. Its a pity some very well known brands fail to support products less than 5 years old. in that case, it was just the ear cushions! In summary, big, very adjustable and solid.
They will last for years and outlast any trends. If you value repairable product over replaceable ones, these are for you.
I had these DT150’s before and sold them. Regretted it ever since. I’ve had Sennheiser HD 650, Denon D5000 & D7200, to name but a few. I purchased the Beyerdynamic DT250 last week. and promptly returned them.
They are, as described on the box , flat response, but emphasis on mids with quite a lot of siblant top end. No where near the quality build of the DT150’s either. I listen to dance, rock, techno, reggae, R&B.
The DT150’S are punchy, especially picking up the low bass end without sounding like Beats or. Skullcandy crushers. yes, I’ve even tried those! Of all the headphones I still have, these are the ones I end up using more than any others.
I’m happy again now that I’ve got the DT150’S back in my collection.
I don’t give 5 stars unless I feel like it really earned it. I’ve given these headphone a few weeks to show me what they got. I have to say that I’m really impressed. I wasn’t expecting the high quality sound that $1000 brands offer but I’ve own quite a few pair of headphones by now and these are the absolute best and these are worth the price.
I won’t have to replace cheaply made foam ear cushions every year or two at $15 per time. I don’t need a fresh battery (times all those expensive packs of batteries over time). I wish they made them with something more breathable than leather but I don’t wear them so long that it’s an issue and at least it’s not foam.
The bass is noticeably more present but smooth and clear. The mids and highs are super clear and not tinny. I’m happy.

Pros: Very comfortable, sounds fantastic Cons: Cord length can be a bit limiting Other thoughts: All in all, these are possibly the best headphones I’ve owned. The fuzzy earpieces are soft, nobfatiguing, and help keep my ears feeling cool.
The sound quality completely lives up to my expectations, with the audio being clear and well defined throughout the entire audible range, and without the ridiculous boomy bass and flabby lows and mids of most more stylish headphones.
They sound better than almost all the sources I’ll ever play through them. Volume levels are completely adequate (forum nerds insist 250 ohm will be too quiet. They’re wrong). Sound isokation is good enough to allow use in a room with a blaring TV and/or boisterous conversation.
The only downside is the the coiled 10′ cord is really nice not good for about 4′-5′ of extension. Fine for most portable devices and dedicated audio equipment, but not enough if there is a need to plug straight into a computer’s amplified out (which, I did not buy these to do).
Pros: As a Sennheiser fan, I had an opportunity to order and compare the BeyerDynamic DT 770 and Sennheiser HD 598 for $100 during the black friday sale. The sound quality of the DT 770 was hands down better in every way.
These are top quality solid built closed back headphones with very clean/deep bass (not boomy) and crisp highs with well balanced mid frequency range. Since the DT 770i is 16 ohms, they work very well with iPhone 7.
I typically like open back headphones as they seem to do a better job at reproducing clean, tight low end frequencies and realistic midrange, but to my surprise, the DT 770 does a great job at all frequency range without boomy or muddy sounds.
With minimum sound leakage due to the closed-back design, it does a so-so job at isolating sound for the user, which is fine. I highly recommend these headphones, even at higher price as they are built to last and sound quality they deliver.
